"Sitting in your ivory tower on your pretend throne. Passing judgment on some GM trying to protect his players in the sport. You know Mike Rizzo is doing it's not insubordination. It's this crazy thing called competence. Have you ever noticed that the incompetence always call those beneath them trying to the right thing in subordinate? Wolf. Insubordination is the same thing as competence than the person calling insubordination is a step away. Mike Rizzo did a service to his players into the game of baseball. We don't have tests we need them to operate. You know that applies to beyond the ball players make $90 a year who are entitled what they're entitled to the folks who need the money because of the cameramen. The folks who need the money because there are sports media. The folks who hope eventually get back to some fans in the stadium so they could sell some concession. People's lives. I'm gonna get some calls here in just a 2nd 106 368686 But can you get your head out of your You know what and get your job done. Squandered weeks of baseball. And now that you and by the way, here's the other distinction that I think is important to make. N BA players and I'm not saying it. Baseball players should make bigger sacrifices. An MBA players You negotiate what you negotiate. It everyday. Players are being asked to go into a bubble away from their families away from their kids. Let's be honest. You're a 25 year old on prime shape. Not gonna have sex for two or three months. I think, Steven. They probably had good luck with that. Those aerials that you're going away from your Children. You gonna be away from your lifestyle? But at least the level of safety that we think we hope MBA is going to bring to that to that world. Baseball players don't have to do that, that they don't get to travel, the country and being empty stadiums. But the flip side of that is they're traveling. There's more risk. There's more freedom. Sleep in your own bed. Some night. You get to see your family. I get it. I'm a dad. I'm a husband. Those things matter. But that means the testing has to be that much more on point. And then you jeopardize the people who are bringing these baseball players food who are flying them across the country who are driving them in the bus. It becomes at least for the folks in that ecosystem. A health issue. Robert Man, Fred, stop leaking things. The Washington Post on insubordination and do your job. Well, I know it's difficult for you. We've seen that. I know it's not in character. We understand that. You said there'd be tests. Healthier players, the healthy your sport, healthy people who rely on it to help people forced to be around these folks. I was younger. I worked at WalMart for a long time. But when I when I was in Iowa, and I come from a blue collar background wake up every day and can't believe how lucky I am The life that I have. I know what hard working people are about. You know, the reality is of folks most folks in this country. They have to go to work to pay their bills. If there's a job to go to, they're going to go. And that includes the folks, the service industry that operates around professional baseball teams that have to be around these guys because they have to do everything they can to support their family. Robert Man friend is jeopardizing their economic well being as well as their health. Everybody involved in baseball get your act together. Ridiculous bill writer filling that would love to have talked about the opening day schedule. There will be an opening day to celebrate. I think the round's gonna win 10 games to share their watch that Sammy walk in my opinion was more on that. You had a great and he was on my bed, and then he was out as a decoy. Most season. I've been like without him out there. That offense is not strong. Your God. Bridget the call. Yes, Watkins did have a good first game. I don't think it's look. I understand that. That's what Sammy Watkins has been telling reporters. But when you make that kind of money can be a decoy. And you watch some of the tape. My Native American heritage is derived from the northeastern state of Chihuahua, Mexico. My grandmother came from there. I'm not full Comanche, but I do have the blood in me and she educated me on why she didn't even like the name Indian. And it's because when Columbus came here, he thought he landed in India. So when she heard me use that term Indian. When I was a kid, she yelled at me and said, You're not Incan. You're native American. Your command she and it really bugged her. So, of course, Redskins offensive. In fact, the term Indian is offensive to a lot of people here, so pick up history. I would like them to change their name to the Washington natives. Keep the logo. "What what do you think about the scenario well John. Appreciate you having me on the show and I'm excited to talk to you about it but never had a wildcard experience like sir. We've had we've had one. We've had win or go home game before obviously rated four playoff scenarios where a game five elimination game so you know we we have the experience of one in done but we've never played a one game series that that kind of dictates your your off season and your playoff chances going to be exciting. It's GonNa be fun. You know we're excited that we could run Max Scherzer out there on the full risk that makes us feel good after the team has been playing good solid baseball for about one hundred twenty five games this year and and we feel we feel good as anybody about our chances assist very good and one game. Do you think that's fair or unfair and I do want to ask you about the choice of Sherzer. Obviously he's one of the best two or three pitchers in the game great signing by you but of course you drafted Strasbourg. He's excellent and Corbin also had a terrific year was was the decision hard fisher. Do you think this is is it unfair to just boil down to one game one game at this for others DECI. We're focused in on the game you know we we've we've earned a record that we have we we the the one game party type of scenario because we didn't win the division of race by. Riddick this year they earned the the the NFL's crown and again and they'll get the luxury of plaintiff's a five game series so and he had you know it is what it is. You've Josh News. There's nothing to look back on. We put ourselves in this position that we like. I said we liked our chances in a one game playoff event going on to if we're fortunate enough to play the great dodger a team that's out in. La So it's it's it's something that it makes you really keep your pedal to the metal and try Brian Win. The division and if you don't you you're in this scenario to have to have to deal with with the you know the the tougher road into it to plan for the world surge ensures not a tough call. I guess I had the N. l. a. a CY young vote to do. I did that yesterday and you you. Have you have so how many good pitchers it was a hard call from with all. The five places that I get shows is not a hard call for you guys. I guess depicts this game. I guess you know we obviously we have a we have several candidates. That could do it. You know straws had a terrific season for us as has Patrick quarterback and we feel that we have three number. One is a week a run out there against anybody in and feel good about winning you know. Max is a three-times cy young award winner. He was on rotation. We set the rotations out. You know on in our last day off for for this format in for this scenario so you know mattress prepared to do it. He did his side's in his work as distress Patrick so everyone everyone's on board and Mad Max whereas you know to me he was the he was easy ultimate Dr Professional and East Y'all warrior and in a guy that you know in a one game scenario you you feel really really good and safe about about running him out there in it. It'll be all hands on deck. You may see Max Extras and corporate Tuesday and and because there's no Wednesday without winning Tuesday tough to argue with Max no question about it you they say. GM's work is really done for the regular season and you know. Some people say the playoffs are crapshoot anyway. GM can't do I mean looking at your record. It's as good as anyone in the regular season as I said five times nine over ninety wins many times in the mid to high nineties and always had a winning record since two thousand House in twelve when you were promoted so I have done a fantastic job but I you know I happen to have been at least three three of the eliminations at home and as you said you've been the playoffs four times and got through that division series yet what I mean looking back on the is it just a crap shoot just bad luck at the wrong time or was there something else to be done in a season's you know oh and he feel about the fact that the playoffs haven't gone as the regular season has gone through this yeah so we played we played. I played great great teams teams and play outside so obviously since two thousand twelve and for an eight year period which is a long period of time we we've got a second or third oshman's at in all of baseball behind the dodgers. We weren't four division titles. We weren't one wildcard so we're in the last time in eight seasons and we've GONNA game. We're going to elimination game five three times so you. You are statement three at three elimination games that we lost all three so you can stay. Stay out of the stadium this eliminate but you know it so razor in that that you know you have to play a perfect game baseball to beat the San Francisco giants one year who went on to win the world series and a Chicago cubs who are terrific day. You're in obviously the you know the the dodgers. That's that third time. All game fives all at home. All you know nip tuck hallway and you know and you know the ball. The ball boss is on the line one sometime or you get a you know a controversial call another time and that's up. It doesn't go your way so hey is chalk it up in my job as general manager singer and our job as a front office is to get to the dance as many times as you can and see if you can see if you can be the hot team and maybe the ball bounce your way and you have a parade array down Pennsylvania Avenue. That's what we're trying to do. Here are a mantra in our in our Our statement is to you know to play meaningful games in September timber October. You know we've done that over the last eight seasons and and we're proud of that but we have not retailer alternate golden our ultimate goal is to roll shooters unfortunately left in two thousand one with diamondbacks to win one and God. There's no feeling like it. I won't be there so you. Maybe you will find out the site was indeed the jinx. I don't know okay you know. I think you know remembering back. It felt like you were the favourite or thought to be an excellent chance in in most of those series. Even though you were playing Exxon team as you mentioned dodgers cubs cardinals giants I mean the giants at that time two thousand two thousand twelve two thousand fourteen obviously they won the world series so you've faced some great teams as soon teams great pitching but you have sherzer going obviously. Milwaukee's been hot lately because your team. Your team has been fantastic. You were under five hundred well into the season and got in the playoffs ahead of Milwaukee the walkie. You have the home field. You feel better different anything going into this a as opposed to the others. I don't think we feel any different different or any better. We we're confident going into those other series. Were confident going into this series. Having Heaven own game was important to us replace extremely heart. I know we want we on an eight game homestand to end the season and we won all eight games and that's a against some tough competition who were playing for something also so we you know we felt that the first time that in in those other seasons when you know we want ninety eight ninety six ninety five and ninety seven games now we were the prohibitive even save or going into it we had we had clinched a division weeks if not several weeks before before playing in a playoff game they had a four day layoffs and played a starring series so you know we had to we had call. We had a crawl from You know you may twenty fourth. What if We we were planning playoff baseball because we had our selves such a deep hole so we've been playing playoff style playoff-caliber playoff mentality baseball for about four and a half months right now and and we hope that we continue that that mindset in that grinding type of mentality going into you too the game tomorrow against a tough. Milwaukee played extremely well this year and have that grinding type type of mentality with starts with Craig Counsel. Were you know when the ultimate grinders of all time the playoffs are what's on everybody's mind right now but a in the last couple of questions wanted to touch on the off season to some degree you've done really well with free agency and there have been other general managers who've been very successful and been hit or miss or or even mostly miss on free agency of an and that's just the way it's been but you know obviously. Corbin did fantastic like this year. That was your big signing in the off season after not getting a harper done Scherzer's one of the best three agents of all time and now the big ones but I mean how we Kendrick I could not have been any better for you guys incredible signing that that was on a two year deal is some trick to free agency that the rest of us don't know about out or what have you managed to Tibet close to a thousand free agency well. I think I think that the way we the way we attack it adhere with the nationals as we are information all our data we do all our due diligence on makeup character and that type of thing and I really do believe that doc. You'll kind of kind of the way I attacked free agency as well. You're giving these long term contracts out. I always say that you're you're not You're not ah you're not betting on on the player. You're betting on the person we all with the player as debate back into baseball card tells us how good he is and you know when you're talking about these multi multimillion dollar deals the player is going to be a great player but we put our money on the person I knew Max Scherzer from his journey already. We drafted him on develop them and watch them turn into a superstar throughout his career. We knew his character. We knew we knew how he was a leader at the house and saw several other several other no character type of players that the list goes on with Zucchini Qian Dosier and and those type of guys so I think that that plays a big part of it. Analytics in performance obviously is important up at the person in in in is knowing how he'll fit into the clubhouse is is a vital part of of signing these free agents especially these long term very very expensive free agents yeah last topic a two guys will do great makeup and had fit well already in their clubhouse. A is a is a free agent and Strasbourg has the option to opt out. You Got Adam signed up early. four years ago did a good job with that but now he can opt out excuse me three years ago with that deal and he's got four years one hundred million to go so you know. Obviously we know that you tried to sign Harper last late September Did you make an effort unreined known I. I I can imagine although I am not privy to. Any of these conversations are not deal. you know may have helped her. I'm not sure but that's an obvious potential comp there era and I don't know if that got away or what but you still have hopes on Ren don't and Strasbourg for for keeping them and and also was hurt. was there any. I I was on a radio. Show you throughout that you'd sign up so no for one hundred million. I don't know if you were just having fun or what did you did. You actually attempt that at some point. Is that a real thing we we. We certainly love you know. Both rundown stras guys near and dear to my heart drafted signed developed both of them. You know there are homegrown guys. They've been with us for a long long time. I these guys aren't these guys earned the right to test the free agent market. Anthony's terrific player force six plus years we made several attempts to sign him before he became a free agent. That hasn't worked out. We'll certainly certainly still attorney and signed him if he becomes a free agent and in the same thing with Strauss. Processing is a person that we've been through a lot together. He and I personally and professionally. He's been with us for a long time. I think he likes being here. I think we love having both of them and I think we have a chance to sign both of them right you. You mentioned you a relationship with Strasbourg. That's obviously the case. I think you did in very nice thing. I I know the controversial two thousand twelve coming off his tummy. Johner obviously had pitched that year but had set up limited and he didn't pitch in the playoffs. I cover that whole playoffs..

"Tell them that we told you to call the nets lost again last night five to one at. Home to the cardinals. That's three straight at home to the cardinals. They finish up their four game set with the cardinals the safter noon at at at four zero five four oh five start at the park. I think there's rain in the forecast lovely in the forecast. But it's now six of seven losses. Six of the last seven games the one game they won they trailed six nothing in and that was to the Padres on Sunday, and they had to rally and win that one in eleven innings for sure Zor. It is now the fifth time in his six starts that they have lost primarily run production, but not all of it just because of run production. He wasn't great last night, and they were banged up. And as they have been banged up in. I was actually listening to somebody tweeted out some of the conversation that Mike Rizzo had with the junkies yesterday JFK, and you know, he he came off as a little bit defensive. In my view. Did you hear it? I did not hear it. But you know, generally when he talks and talks to the media when it comes things like that. He does get a little bit defensive. I like surprise me. I like Rizzo a lot. Yeah. Always loved before. He became a regular fixture and paid fixture on JFK used to always love having him on the shows that that I was a part of with Tommy and particular at nine eighty I like Reseau a lot. I love he he's a he's a tough SOB feisty competitive. And I think he's really smart, but but the bottom line is they are injured. I mean, no reknown no Turner last night. No Soto knows Zimmerman right last night. Yes. On the yes. So they are struggling to generate offense certainly enough offense to to stem. This this run of losses in their last. Seven games. They've lost six times. You know, they've produced in in several of them not enough runs. Three runs. Three runs. Three runs. Two runs. And last night. Just one one they haven't had a game that they've lost except for the Sunday game that will they won that game seven to six, but the they lost the game nine to five the loss in Colorado. That started this, you know, six losses and seven game stretch that was about the only game where they produced enough offense. But they're starting pitching hasn't been great either. Patrick Corbin was great until his last start. Right. Where he wasn't so good Strasberg's actually been pretty good as of late and he gets the start today this afternoon, but in the nets are twelve and seventeen. Yeah. There this is this is as badly as you could have fought as bad as you. You could have thought that they could have started the season a season that many thought would end in division title and a run at a World Series. Look. This game. You know, it's hard to say one game must win socially in may. It's a huge game. It's a must win. I think it's a I think if they lose this game go out on that road trip. As I said, we talked about this a few days ago is this ten game road trip where I think they need to come home from that, you know, less than five games under five hundred like, so if they lose today, they are six games under five hundred that puts a lot of pressure on that team to do very well on a very tough road trip. And if they don't I don't know that Dave Martinez comes back as the manager. When you say comes back next year, or do you think no no coming back from the as the manage who who's the replacement? So we talked about this a few days ago. And I didn't have a great answer for you. And there then I did a little digging. There are two possibilities. I found one. I really like. And I think they might go this direction. Rennie nor is the manager and AAA right Randy. Or if you remember almost got the job several times the bench coach for a long time. Almost got it. After David Johnson was fired and was considered at least briefly after Matt Williams was fired as well..

The biggest challenge facing the American political system and our constitution today. The political polarization that has engulfed American politics over the past two decades or so which political scientists and legal scholars referred to his hyper polarization. You can listen to Andrew Cohen again on C span dot org. And stay tuned for Washington journal coming up at seven o'clock AM eastern time. Tomorrow C span radio WCS PFM Washington. This week on Q and day, author and journalist Jane Levy, she discusses her book, the big fella, Babe, Ruth and the world he created. Jane Levy, author of the big fella. Who was he? Babe Ruth by cabdriver just bringing up their pay Ruth. Bruce love Babe Ruth. This is a guy from Nigeria and he was just thrilled to see Babe Ruth on the cover of the book. Why is he such a big deal because he was an original Mike, Mike Rizzo? The general manager of the Washington nationals one of the first guys I interviewed low eight years ago. And he said he was the original original, he's an archetype. He's the guy who came in to baseball and changed everything from the way it was played to the way players were represented to the way architecture was built everything was different after Babe Ruth. Let's go see some basics born where Baltimore. Do what parents George Herman Ruth senior? And Katie schamberger Ruth. He was the first of their children. She was two months pregnant when they got married. There was a sequence of children born to them afterwards. It's some it's in some dispute whether they had eight or six, but of the children that I could locate in archives four died in infancy and of those four two died of what was then called marasmus, which in modern terms means starvation where did he go to school on how much school did he have he was sent to the Saint Mary's industrial school, which was cusp of western Baltimore was basically farmland when he got there on June thirteenth nineteen o two. And he was sent there. Not because he was an orphan as many people still believe and not because he was an incorrigible which meant a kid who is in trouble with the law, but because his parents marriage fell apart and ended in. Terrible divorce, which was actually publicized in the Baltimore Sun. So while it was public at the time in may nineteen o six Babe Ruth managed to keep it a secret through his entire life. And now for seventy years after. How many different baseball teams that he played for he played for the Orioles of the international league when he left Saint Mary's in one thousand nine hundred fourteen he was sold to the Red Sox. The Red Sox sent him down to providence to play further grays, which he led as a pitcher to a championship. And then he went back to the Red Sox where he was a star pitcher for as we know several years, including winning the second game of the nineteen sixteen World Series for pitched fourteen innings gave up one run was the beginning of a record that he held dear of twenty nine and two-thirds innings of shutout World Series baseball, and then Harry Frazier, and I think I can say this on the air was the biggest schmuck in baseball sold him to Jacob Rupert in the New York Yankees on December twenty six nine thousand nine hundred for one hundred thousand dollars. What what has not been known is that he was so broke crazy was so broken. It did not have to do with. A play. He was producing. No, no, nannette another one of the legends. No, no, no, no net net came later. But he was so broke that he also borrowed three hundred thousand dollars from Jake Rupert giving the least to Fenway as collateral while the money that Jake or paid was a six percent the money that tariff phrasing borrowed was at seven percent now. I'm no mathematician, but it was very made very clear to me. What that means is that after six years, basically, Harry Frasier had paid the Yankees to take Babe Ruth off his hands. How many times was he married twice? How many children did he have he had two adopted daughters? The first daughter Dorothy who died in the eighties was never sure of her parentage. She would tell people, including will be printed in the New York Times in the eighties that she had witnessed a deathbed confession. Of a family friend, Juanita Jennings Elias who claimed that she'd had an affair with Babe Ruth. And that she was really Dorothy mother that was not known at the time. And I'm not and it's never been scientifically proven a two of Dorothy surviving daughters. Don't believe it. For example, Dorothy died as I said in the eighties. The second daughter was also adopted by him was the daughter of his second wife Claire, so he had these two little girls creating a nuclear family that you know, he had never had as a child people that watch his show Norman Lear saying to themselves right now why in the world is he talking about Babe Ruth baseball. Jane Levy, but I want wanna show you besides avenue interesting book, but besides that here's one of the reasons that this happened in November of last year at the White House. Babe Ruth played for four baseball teams between nineteen fourteen and nineteen thirty five. He set records that stood for decades, including seven hundred fourteen home runs two thousand eight hundred seventy three hits two thousand one hundred seventy four runs and two thousand sixty two walks and he remains unmatched with a six ninety slugging percentage over fifteen legendary seasons. Babe Ruth l'idee Yankees to seven American League championships and four World Series championships. His legacy has never been eclipsed. And he remains the personification of America's pastime off the baseball field. He created the Babe Ruth foundation and tirelessly raised funds for the war effort during the second World War. The United States proudly honors in American hero who forever changed the landscape of American sports..

"This is you know, I don't know what's going to happen. But I will tell you. I think this is going to be one of the most exciting playoffs we've ever seen because of the home runs which are just flying out of the ballpark's and the relief pitching, which is going to be all over baseball. And then one or two starters. The all time starters are gonna come up and make a difference. I just feel it's out there somewhere. Yeah. I agree. I, you know, I'm really pulling for emergency doubleheader tomorrow. That'd be great. Yeah. I know that the TV all staggered. So it's one after another they I really doubt they'd play simultaneously. I hope not but they have to stagger. Yeah. And of course, you can't have a too early in the day. Chris teams are traveling. But that would be wonderful. Well, let's see. That's right. Timezone? So you'd be because it would be brewers cubs. Is that right? Yeah. Would play in LA LA active work teams are home already too. So wouldn't be a lot of travel for the dodgers in the Rockies. But then the winner would have to go to either Milwaukee Milwaukee tonight have to play. Yeah. You're right, Bruce, if they played late you'd have to get on a plane and get to the next city for for a game the next day. Yeah, I'm sure they won't be worried though, whoever wins that that'll be that'll be a hell of a flight. I think they're going to wear their uniforms on the plane take it from Mike Rizzo there Anthony Rizzo, Anthony Rizzo. Boy, interesting. All right. This is maybe some of your final thoughts on the giants as we get ready for a winter of who knows what anything unusual on your mind. On your mind about the giants. I don't know. I we've talked. So so so often about how you know, they've got a long road ahead of them to get back to where they want to be. I don't I don't think there's any easy answers. They got to figure out what they're gonna do with them garnered. But that that's obvious. I really. Just a matter of sorting everything out. They really haven't been satisfied with the young players, the young outdoors that's outside of Duggar. They've got a they've got to get much better in the outfield. I think they're probably going to have to trade. Brandon bell just to shake things up a little bit bringing some new tale. Basically seem kind of stock. Blueprint for me and what they're gonna do. You got something in mind their Marnie. Well, I just think I'd like to see the person they do hire someone who has put a team together. And is a good evaluator. That's that's what I'd like to see. I think that's what I just wanna see who they pick as the head of the operation. Yeah. I've seen some rundowns of possible candidates. You know, people who are working other organizations, and for the most part, you know, they've been assistance, and they haven't been the person who who does that. I saw one St. I mentioned the Mike Rizzo earlier. By mistake. You know, he he I saw his name mentioned I have done some pretty screwy things. He he's a he's a good baseball, man. But he wouldn't be the first name that comes to mind. But a lot of the candidates are people that are not really front burner kinds of names. Yeah. So you don't really know you really have no idea about so many things. I'm just going to let it happen. And see what see how it goes me too. Kind of ruining for Cayenne bloom, and I just want to ask him if he's related to Barry. I just wanted. I just wanted. You can't if you can't get van Lingle Mungo. You gotta go with the bloom. The alley stock in bloom. All right. Hey, bruce. I love it. It's it's the biggest thing we do all year long as having weekend's. I thank you so much for doing it. It's such a.

Tony, Burt Reynolds is also at the center of a cultural sexuality that now would be squashed music how public it was not people celebrated him. So highly on thanksgiving weekend, no matter what you show because people hate their families. You now I have something that's even better than this match. And I like this idea. There's a lot of dead time when two guys are just playing walking around time. What if what? If they also showed this Michael Jordan in a winner, take all match Jordan would put up his own money his against, let's say, Tony Romo or John Smoltz or Justin Timberlake. No, not people would watch that as well. Not anymore, and I don't want to watch this anymore. I love tiger. "You, can hear a lot of stuff And I heard stuff that really surprised, me about the national if you, listened to Mike Rizzo general manager yesterday He said you know we we have faith in our. Team were standing Pat and sounds good it sounds can kind of understand it the way they're built and yet That's not what I heard I heard, they got well down the. Road on potentially trading Bryce Harper it sounds like. The Indians were in hot and heavy there and well down the road on Kelvin Herrera. Ryan match and they were they were close to. Doing. Some. Big time, selling and then for whatever reason they pulled, back and decided they were gonna see what happens this month has, to stay tuned on that team yes yeah I said if the moment they get rid of Bryce I if they. Did and it has nothing, to do against, price but there's always. That cloud over a superstar that you're waiting for her to go hot or the demands of presence in the clubhouse I said pick. The nationals the win at, all if they. Were able to get rid of them because we'll victims bliss with one Soto with guys that they would actually become better I feel. I because, look they're, not, waiting they're actually doing and things will become comprehensive as far as. It seemed you see like that or or is it because. Everything was puppy. Dogs and rainbows when he expressed out happy to still be a national, always wondered You know I think. That's inside of the game it's it's part of the game on their teams trying to get better and you know it's just something that came up and Resume. Reassured me earlier, yesterday that I wasn't going anywhere so You know I was I was very happy about that. And Four now Dropped, the ball. Mike Rizzo hope you guys prove. Me wrong we'll love to see him rental and I know I, know they they won twenty five to one. Last night we just be honest a lot more about the Mets then is. The national I get it in a twenty five to one. Baseball game there's credit and blame certainly to, go around but I am not of the belief that's going to kick. The nationals I just think there's something off and that's part of what Mike Rizzo the GM needs to have the fortitude. To do and that. Is fire, Dave Martinez and I'm not saying that lightly My father. And my mother different careers but both were in charge of people I've watched them have to let go of people my wife Lori used to work at the Kennedy, star manage people newspapers struggle recent. Say lightly fire the guy and people love d. Martinez, he is, beloved in that clubhouse it has. America Crecy is a get stuff done business he hasn't gotten done, they've they've underperformed but Rizzo hasn't had the. Courage the leadership to do the too hard things fire his manager who has. Failed and move on from vice Harper because that failure means. Bryce Harper is going to leave and I, feel bad for nationals fans had a different GM on I think a. Pretty good one from the NFL side Thompson Lesko chargers LA chargers general manager and Jason Verita went down every year it. Feels like there's some. Chargers the, chargers are pretty good and then Injury, happens and, to be. Fair to the chargers reds really good but they're. Secondary their entire defense as the. Chance to be really special, this year Feels like Philip. Rivers has enough in the tank Keenan Allen's gotta stay, healthy, Melvin, Gordon's turned into, a stud it's a good football team in a really interesting division a lot of change going on outside of the chargers cheese, heavy not a rookie but a first time quarterback and Patrick Mahomes rookie last year The raiders have Kansas straight face here on the roadshow raiders game Jon Gruden, hundred million dollars sure game. Passed and buys last three years in the league decade, or so ago let's let's, let's see if all were out here's, a hundred million cool good luck with that and the Broncos brought in case keenum. We'll see whether or not, he can. Be even a mediocrity that. Can make perhaps that Broncos, team better and if you're if? You're a fan of his game maybe maybe more than. Mediocrity but to give the. Chargers and opportunity it feels like in an. Interesting and crowded AFC west San. Diego could finally breakthrough they finished last, year really really strong there. "I've never seen anything like this. So this is an interesting way to inspire a team to try and live up to its standards in the past three weeks, we've seen max sherzer call a team meeting and then go at it with Stephen Strasburg in full view of a lot of people. Bryce Harper. When a home run derby, everybody loves him. He's been hitting three hundred by the way since the all star break. Then despite all of that, there's rumors that Mike Rizzo on a listening tour for Bryce Harper's services decides with few hours left to go to text our third, our guest from the Washington Post who has been covering all of this for the Washington nationals expertly. Chelsea Jane's. She will be joining us in our number three texts her to say. Bryce is not going anywhere I believe in this team and then Bryce Harper stays. They put up a twenty five spot on the Mets. And instead of that being the rallying cry and look, Bryce Harper stays. They put up a quarter century on the Mets. Look at us. John county comes in flings glove gets cut. The hell's happening by the way they're five hundred. By the way they're five hundred and the Philadelphia Phillies made some interesting moves yesterday Wilson romo's coming from the temporaries, the acquired all star catcher, the Phillies while Ramos's convalescing and and they, they called up the Orioles who are just they, the fire sale every they're giving it all away. They, they should have just had do cat on her front. Lawn of the nest there in between Mt Bank and candy yards and selling them all off and Adam Jones a stellar all star player. Cal all-star caliber player in his own right traded to the Phillies except he decides I'm not going anywhere. I'm not going anywhere staying put because in major league baseball. If you have ten years in the league and the last five years in row with the same team, it's called a ten, five world's been around forever. You have automatic veto trade right to say. I'm not going and Adam Jones despite being on a team at lost last night in Yankee Stadium to the Yankees to fall to thirty two in seventy five. That's not a misprint thirty two and seventy five less than thirty percent of the winning twenty nine point nine percent of their baseball games and instead of going, okay, I'll try and win a championship Philadelphia Phillies he says, I got kids here. I've got family. He'd family ties in Baltimore. Essentially. I've got charity work here in Baltimore. I am. I don't really need to tell you exactly. Why decided not to go anywhere give you the exact quote. It's quite something from from Adam Jones. When players walked out years ago and walked the picket lines and did all that stuff. They did all that for reasons. Like right now again, the. Five, I earned this in. It's my decision. I don't have to explain it to nobody. It's my decision. Thank you. I love that. So, I mean, this is the Dan age where players are accused of chasing championships joining super team, correct. So in the last twenty four hours, we've seen one of the the guy who created the super team bro. Get criticized for coming here to Los Angeles in certain parts because he's chasing Hollywood. But he's opening up a school for kids back where he is from his hometown so they can avoid similar problems in their lives that he was able to overcome in his. Thanks to basketball. And then we seen athlete in Baltimore, not chase championship to stay put for thirty two win team..

"I'm excited to go there Racing on Yeah, I mean you got to try to make the best. Of? It right you gotta try to figure out How to set your mind In a positive way because otherwise it's hard enough to pick up and move, whether it's across, the, country whether you're, changing timezones whatever it is it's hard enough. To start all over again But you, almost, always have to, hold that attitude that you are you're a Not just an athlete but, but you're a member of an industry in which this is always. A possibility I know Bryce Harper, said that he was confident Mike Rizzo wouldn't be trading him because Rizzo gave him that assurance on Monday but, still there's no way that he didn't breathe a. Sigh of relief when the, when the trade deadline passed, and. He was still a member of the, nationals it's after hours with Amy Lawrence. On CBS sports radio Kevin and by the way went to Atlanta he is, five. And eight this season I think he's made twenty one starts and his ERA as four point four three so you have. Guzman then going and trying to help the Braves win the NFL east or secure themselves a wildcard spot and Brian Dozier ends up with the Los Angeles Dodgers which I think it's interesting because it's not the. First time that he's, been rumored to be out there or that the dodgers. Have been interested in him according to Dave Roberts there's been talk about Brian for the, last few years so, to get a guy that's finished in the top ten fifteen of the MVP voting Eleven to three years place plus defense is. A grinder type player so that's a big acquisition he's gonna play against left handed pitching He's going. To play against the pitching as well. But to say every day. I think that that's a little extreme Almost every single, one of the, contenders in major league baseball the teams you think of when you think about these last two months the regular season the major players they made moves, the Red Sox with Ian Kinzler the Yankees with six trades in seven days of the most recently being Lance, Lynn I think do they make. A trade on Tuesday, that I missed field that there was a flurry of activity but the Yankees making significant moves we mentioned the, raise if you'd say they're part of a of a race that they're not that far out. In the wild card but they're twenty games out in the alley simply because of the. Pace of the Red Sox you also had. The Houston Astros making a move which many are criticizing for good reason. So we'll dive into that a, little bit you're looking for explanation from inside the Astros clubhouse or the, general manager you're not gonna. Get it though but it's certainly been a major, controversy because Roberto Osuna isn't even done serving his suspension for domestic Violence and so. There's a there's another element to that with the World Series champions right. Now having to having to deal, with some backlash and I think it's well deserved the questions at the, very least are well deserved And so we'll get into that, plus we've got some QB news. Still on the show, and we need your questions for ask Amy anything you can find us on Twitter after hours CBS if you, send them to me and I don't like your questions I won't pass them along That would be your mistake. Is that the player to be named later? Yeah, I, I'm not fully sure about that. I just know that the trade deadline had a lot of juice when we woke up in the morning. And then Mike Rizzo said Bryce Harper not being moved ever like, well, fuck man. Could you at least wait till four o'clock? So we think it was going to happen. Yeah, suspense out and I, I'm as a nets fan. I guess I can Sam in that's fan now. Yeah. Now, as as one who possesses Natta tude I think he probably should've traded him. My guess is they just got a bunch of shitty offers because he sucks this year fence, Bryce. Oh, if you get them, you know you do you rent them for a couple of months. Maybe he loves. The scenery, but the big trade movers the brewers added a couple of guys. The Braves added someone to Phillies. Chris Archer went to the pirates which the pirates are going for it. I love my favorite part about the trade deadline is you can figure out who's going for it, who's not. Are you buying or selling the Orioles not going for it? I don't even think they have thirty wins right now. So they're not going for the Red Sox all in they, they get anybody. They got Kinzler. I think the cubs are did their move with hamels got a couple of relief pitchers. So everyone's all in the the Yankees also did their thing. They got Jay hap and Zach Britton. So it's it's going to be a spicy end of the season, and people are definitely going to watch folks when NFL comes back. I haven't seen Britain teaming up like this with the Yankees since nineteen. Forty five. Folks, the put the Brent Musburger mulling folks mauling. The real other story though, was we had an actual fight in the NBA classic season pettiness Tristan Thompson punch Draymond green in the face and the club? Yes. So it was. They were at a club after the Espy wards and I guess Draymond green went up Tristan Thompson said, hey, man, like no harm, no foul. We're, let's be cool which I'm gonna actually, even though Tristan Thompson threw the punch and didn't knock them out, which that's a terrible look. It would piss me off if someone had just won their third championship in four years, it'd be like, hey, man, it's cool like we're all cool like, no dude, you just swept us and we stink. It's also kind of shit had moved because even if dream on green mint his apology, there's no way that you can look at Draymond green in the face and think he's got anything but shitting ran on. Right?.

Sean Nukem, Turner and Josh Hader discussed on First and Last

"They sent many, many years ago. One of them almost had the crowning moment of his brief young career, Atlanta Braves, pitcher, Sean, nukem, nearly pitcher, no hitter against the dodgers yesterday came within a strike of throwing out of shutting out and no hitting the l. a. dodgers. But soon thereafter he was apologizing for tweets that were sent in two thousand eleven and two thousand twelve that were. Offensive. One tweet included a racial epithet. That was part of a rap lyric. Several others contained gay slurs. He spoke about his no hitter than he came back and issued a statement about the tweet, saying, quote, I just wanted to apologize for any insensitive material. It was a long time ago, six or seven years ago, saying some stupid stuff with friends. I know I've grown a lot since then. I didn't mean anything by it. It was just something stupid. I did a long time ago and I didn't mean anything by it for sure. This is very similar to the situation that brewers reliever, Josh Hader had to deal with the night of the all star game says MLB in a statement, quote, such inappropriate comments have no place in our game. We are aware of this serious issue. Billy Bean's going to meet with Mr. nukem this week, and we will identify an appropriate course of diversity training in the Atlanta community being as major league baseball, vice president for social responsibility and inclusion that Sean nukem. We also had Washington. National shortstop, trade Turner, who became the third major leaguer this month to have old embarrassing an offensive tweets resurface. These also day two thousand eleven two thousand twelve from when Turner was an eighteen year old. The tweets included a gay slur anti-gay comments and joke with racist undertones Turner on Sunday night issued a statement, saying quote, there are no excuses for my insensitive and offensive language on Twitter, Turner, like nukem is now twenty five years old saying quote, I am sincerely Sarli sincerely, sorry for those tweets. I apologize wholeheartedly. I believe people who know me understand those were credible actions do not reflect my values or who I am, but I understand the hurtful nature of such language. And I'm sorry to have brought any negative light to the nationals organization myself or the game. I love and his own statement, Mike Rizzo the GM of the national said Turner's tweets were quote inexcusable, but he also added Turner has quote, been a good teammate and model citizen in our clubhouse, and these comments are not indicative of how he's conducted. Himself while a part of our team Turner was second in the rookie of the year voting in two thousand sixteen hitting to sixty five with thirteen homers. This year old tweets were posted by Twitter user who cited earlier postings of old offensive tweets from Sean nukem. So we're back at this again right back to where we were a couple of weeks ago with Josh hater tweets, and it is a growing problem perhaps for major league baseball..
