"Holmes on the host of npr's pop culture happy hour about mike richards a couple of times in terms of his originally being announced as the next host of jeopardy and then being announced as the next host of jeopardy and that eventually losing his position as the executive producer is well. What i thought about it most was that it was similar to watching a ball bounce down a flight of stairs in the sense that there were a lot of twists and turns. Different things were uncovered. You know he had a podcast on which he said a lot of very foolish and offensive. Things you know. His reputation at a prior workplace was kind of clearly pretty mixed. There was dogged reporting out of the ringer on his activities and his career and it was clear from kind of pretty early on that he was not going to keep job and they just hung on and hung on hung on and as a result it was much much worse it was never a good idea to announce the p. has the next host and people sort of thought well so he just hired himself. Nobody was enthusiastic about that. Especially after they had tried out all these people you know a lot of them were pretty popular. There's obviously a big popular push for lavar burton and there are other people who are well liked and then they hired. The ep. felt kind of ridiculous. That i think you know the point was. They should have just bailed out a lot sooner and they didn't. And as a result they paid the price so that was sort of the take on mike richards on his short career as the putative host of jeopardy so i have to be honest. I watched everybody's reactions in so many ways to all things about the jeopardy search and i thought everybody sounded like some form of idiot in the course of eighty it may be going too far but no one no coated themselves in glory as his whole jeopardy everything went on. Here's the thing number one no matter who they made the new hosa jeopardy quote unquote people weren't going to like. I never going to be some people who like whoever was but whoever was gonna win that was going to win them. With the plurality of public support so if twenty five percent of the people assuming that the people had to vote right if twenty five percent of the people wanted one particular candidate at all of the candidates they had that twenty five percent would have been enough to win at which point seventy five percent of the people are upset like that was the point that david stern tried to make lebron about the decision. Which is they're five teams in the running. Only one of them is going to win. Which means everybody but that one team is going to hate you and so that was always going to be the case and so you had all these people on the internet with the lavar burton push and i guess it would have been cooler. Lavar burton would have been the host of jeopardy but i watched a couple of his field imports. Like you wouldn't bet but it wasn't like he had some towering performance that nobody else could top. I saw the ratings. They weren't particularly high when lavar burton was on there but people were just really upset about the idea that lavar burton didn't become hosted jeopardy. What was the last time you thought about no lavar burton before this whole thing came up like lavar burton had been coasting aaa jeopardy and was leading the league with thirty five homers in only stood to reason that he will be the person to get called up to big league jeopardy president. The job. no thought like you really like read rainbow that much. You was watching star trek the next generation like every week to go see lavar burton. You didn't care about lavar burton. That was just thing you wanted to be mad about on the internet that day but jeopardy did was they pretended like this thing was going to be a real search. And it wasn't. The boss had decided that he was going to hire himself. Which i don't think would have been a problem if they hadn't pretended like they were having tryouts. The boss hiring himself doesn't offend me. It doesn't bother me. I don't look at this as a white man and doing something and not the reason. I don't look at it that way. I think i made this out. If i made example here but i've made it other places man ebro. It had ninety seven. Ebro was the program director of hot ninety seven. And as i recall ebro made himself the host of the morning show and then quit as the program direct he said content was where the game was and so he wanted to be the host of the morning show and that was a direction that he wanted to go in. Okay ebro a white right. That's how they go. Sometimes right. people put themselves into those positions gregg. Popovich with the spurs hired himself to be the head coach. That worked out fairly well like that happens in the game. I think more than people recognize or realize so. I didn't have a problem with any of that. What really got me about it with mike. Richards is there wants. All this other stuff came out and he ultimately been exposed and they decided okay. This guy can't be the host of jeopardy which couldn't be. That's all anybody would ever think about. Was that what got me was how long it took before they said and he can't beat the executive producer either my given what the things where they were talking about from the pack as and giving with the allegations were about the way that he treated women. How did he get to keep the the job with the power. People were okay with that like what they said. He wanted to be jeopardy hose. People celebrate that. I could be wrong. But i didn't see a lot of those same people saying okay. Well now this guy shouldn't have this job either like he couldn't have the job hosting jeopardy at that point because whatever people saw him that would be the stuff that they would think about and that interferes with your ability to actually host the show right. But i could make an argument that he was actually capable of hosting jeopardy. Could be the person to read the questions to talk to the people all of those things. He was not unqualified to do the job as much as it now grown impossible for him to do the job and i don't know if he was capable of it to begin with but you 'em point right but he had to absolutely be disqualified for being the executive producer. Like you are not capable of doing these things saying these things to women at work. You cannot do that like the way. You're talking about the models and all that stuff then. You are night qualified to.

"Of Jeopardy after Mike Richards stepped down for being a problem all around my home was recently announced as the host for the primetime and spin off series The Little lady, but she's been tapped to replace Mike On a short term basis. However, I'm hearing that they're actually trying to work around her schedule to record as many episodes. As possible with her with the ultimate goal of her taking over full time. "Booby pictures. Clear you you mentioned that you know. It was clear early on that. This was a guy that wanted to be in front of the camera. As opposed to behind it so do we have a sense for how well his episodes is. Guest host went because it's not even clear for instance that anyone suspected that he was supposed to be among the group of guest host while he was guest hosting correct. Yeah so do. We know how well it went. Yes and no So the ratings on jeopardy have been Slowly but steadily falling since trebek's death Which as as worrying as it is for sony. I don't think is necessarily like a super shocking development because of course after you lose your legendary host who is the face of the franchise like of course those those ratings are going to drop off but you know you would see throughout this guest host rotation these-these rankings. It's like here's how the newest guest hosted in didn't their ratings and basically with only like a couple exceptions and they were minor ones in terms of the actual numbers every single guest host was lower than the last so mike richards was the second guest host of the season and he had the second highest guest host ratings. So he followed. Ken jennings who had the number one highest ratings. So you know. I don't really know what you can tell from that. Because i think that has more to do with proximity to to back than than anything The thing that sony and richards giving a lot of interviews as ep over the last year hyped was that this search for the next host was one that was going to rely on analytics and data. And that i think through my reporting in through the recording of others has has become somewhat suspect From talking to people for the story that came out last week It became clear. I mean he was intimately involved in just about every corner of the process. So sony has said that once he became a candidate he bowed out of this kind of search committee for the new host but he was still the executive producer so he was still the person training every new guest host as they came into the studio he was the one literally in their ear telling them what to do or to do better or to stop doing. He was the one that has come out in the new york times Who selected the episodes to send onto focus group. So i mean in theory like your your very first episode that you ever tape. You're probably your first ever game. Show is probably not as good as your tenth episode or whatever it is and so to have him involved in that process in in in some cases to be the only person making those calls is of course a conflict of interest. So i think they're you know in my story. Yes we touched on the podcast. And there's a lot there that is worth examining. And i think that is kind of dominated the headlines since he stepped down but it really is also now clear that the the the search for a new permanent host wasn't really what it seemed to be or at least not entirely. I think that has fans feeling fairly betrayed. So i mean it it seems like he he emerges he gets named the successor to alex. Beck you write your story. It drops last week. What happened as soon as the story gets published for you like did you start getting calls then or like how did you know. Did you get a sense of immediately. That like oh it might be over for this guy already. Well so to get into the timeline a little bit so we reached out for comment on tuesday and all those. Those episodes were pulled down on tuesday night. The we had copies of course and we published on wednesday thursday. Was the long planned. I tape day of the season and not only was it. The contestants coming in for the first five games of the season because they tape a week's episode episode on each tape day they also had this Kind of ceremony. They had planned to dedicate the sound stage where they film jeopardy rename it. The alex trebek's stage and they had your family come in his wife and his kids and they had all these kind of sony dignitaries come in and they clearly wanted this to be this big deal special moment And to be the beginning of a new era with mike. Richards is the host and He tapes five games. But what has come out. And what. I've been hearing from people is that i mean it was. It was very tense day on the set and that a lot of the staff had seen things that were in my story and they were very troubled by them And so then friday morning. They announced that he was stepping down in a canceled production. 'cause they were supposed to take the second the second week week of episodes for the season that day and they actually had all the contestants twelve contestants who are going to be playing that day in many in many cases have been training for months and years for this chance they got to the green room and then they were told to go home. So jeopardy is supposed to start taping. It's next week of episodes this week. in we don't know what they're going to do. They haven't said if they're canceling production. They had said that they were gonna turn back to guest hosts. They haven't said who that will be at if it'll be new people or if they'll return to some of last season's guest hosts right now. Mike richards is still the executive producer of the show and of wheel of fortune. So you know. It's i think there has been some some outrage. That if these things are disqualifying for him to be the host of jeopardy surely they must also be disqualifying for him to be executive producer of the show and of course the staff is not pleased either. So it's sort of a weird thing. That's going on over there. And i i mean i frankly just feel for the contestants who who had no part in this at all and they don't get any vote about who who the host is in the end. Suddenly this is no part of their jeopardy experience. The finish up claire. This is really embarrassing for the legacy of this show which as you write about and i mentioned earlier is sort of viewed particularly game. Show world like this intellectual out liar. How much does this hurt. Jeopardy's reputation how does it recover the sort of the gloss of trebek's reputation. Either there have been reports that the head of sony. Tv is is now kind of in hot water over bungling this. Because i mean he was one of the probably deciding vote in hiring richards to be the host and they had not found this podcast themselves or kind of looked into all this more certainly raises eyebrows. I think that one of the joys of jeopardy is what you that it is this kind of place of pure facts and that's all that matters and it's never been a controversial show and it hasn't really changed that much in It was just something. You kind of spanned spanned american pop culture in american culture in a way that so few tv shows or anything. Does these days in the year. Twenty twenty one and in that feels dented now and and you know i guess we'll we'll find out if it's irreversible certainly is a show with a massive audience in that's not changing. It's not like it's gonna be cancelled next season it's This going to be cancelled three or four years And i do think that there is a possibility that if if they hire somebody who is less contentious in it's it's hard to imagine them finding somebody much more contentious frankly And richards exits as ep in kind of ends this chapter for the show..

That's the crazy part. I know a lot of people were up in arms about that. I actually thought that it made sense because he understands the show and like loves it. I i don't know. I didn't think it was that we're this obviously is a different situation. He looks like he would host a show. Jeopardy doesn't yes. He does look like he would host a show like he's like but this is when i go back to privilege and not saying because he's a white man i'm saying he was at a level and he was the boss so his privilege made him feel like he could get away with those comments knowing that they were out there that they lived on a podcast his privileged. I think he really got the urge of like i can get away with this. That makes me feel powerful. That makes me think okay. Think with him he obviously knew what was going to going to come out and he could have gotten ahead of it and he also could have made some apologies in advance. There's no reason i agree with you. Shaw or somebody on a reality show and you knew that you have been doing some illegal for a long time. What in your brain or in your ego. Lets you think that you can allow ten cameras to come into your life and follow you and that no one was gonna think you're smarter than everybody else to you. Know to be an executive producer to be that you have to have a certain amount of ego. And i think ego got involved but this also i think something we need to mention. This didn't happen when he was eighteen years old. He was already in his thirty right. So you kinda know better at that point if you make some comments on twitter when you're seventeen that's a lot different than yes being in your thirties on a podcast. When you're already a successful business person you're running shows one hundred percent. What do you think is going to happen to him neck. Well he's staying on non executive producer. Which i was because we're so used to the cancel court culture like you get wiped out. You make one mistake. That's it you're gone. You don't nobody talk to you for a long time. You go and sit on the bench and that's it so. I was surprised that they actually kept him on. Because that's not really been the strategy for most people. People wash their hands of people very quickly so so different approach. We'll see what happens to ask another question that although i ever. Somebody is leaving a show like this. Why do they have the person send a letter to the you know their staff saying i'm leaving when clearly. That's not really the case. Why don't think he was saying. I'm leaving. I think he was saying. Fans of "Jeopardy!" say goodbye to Alex Trebek as his final episode airs
"Last night marking the end of an era. It was an especially somber night for fans of jeopardy, and the show's late host Alex Trebek, the longtime host final episode air last night. Trebek died in November after battling pancreatic cancer. CBS is Vladimir Duty a spokes Jeopardy! Executive producer Mike Richards. Who said Alex Trebek spirit will live on in the show.
