Boston - Patriots cancel practice after another positive COVID-19 test
"At least by the reporting of Mike Reese and also field Yates of ESPN that the Broncos have A couple of or I should say the Patriots have a covert 19 positive, maybe two. What are you hearing? Yeah. And while I'm obviously here in the same stuff you in real time kind of trying to track it every step of the Broncos on haven't heard back yet to find out if they've heard from the league as Faras. Causing their plans or potentially looking at moved to. Ah, Monday starter a Tuesday on Tuesday. Kick potentially on so I'm sure that the Broncos are you know they're about to hit the practice field or they may be out there right now. Normally I'd be there. But again the new baby's keeping practice. But this is the practice will go Tell that 12 45. They're not going to change that at this point, because right now you work so much situational stuff. And not just situational is related to the game, but but situational things, you know, onside kick stuff and things that you know, I don't say trick plays. But just in case this happens in the game, be ready for this. So that'll hold game to game, Not just They're not. They play the Patriots, but certainly question mark now, if there is one or even two positive cases. Down current, though, who covers the Pats for NBC Sports Boston. I thought I had a pretty good point because they've been socially different now for so long, and we're out of the building most of last week and then when they didn't do whatever they did. It was all on the field spread out, including meeting Saturday or whatever, then we're off Sunday to Wednesday. And that yesterday was the first day back. Odds are this case is probably residual from the Stefan Gilmore Cam Newton Positive test. Brian counter the defence line from that group. Just based on the way the incubation periods work, or it's something completely different and just coincidental. But, you know, certainly more questions and answers right now. No question and then
Portland sheriff disputes Trump's claim he supports president
"President trump, you have two minutes wise. Should Americans trust you over your opponent to deal with right crime bill nine, hundred and ninety four where you call them superpredators African. Americans the Super Predators and they've never forgotten that they've never forgotten. Also it's his two minutes. You did that and they call you Super Predator and I'm letting people out of jail. Now that you have treated the African American population community, you have treated the black community about as bed is anybody in this country that's president trump and Joe Biden sparring last night in Cleveland perhaps, the Congress moment of the evening when president trump was an interrupting almost everything Joe Biden said fact checkers have noted trump lied when he accused by calling black-americans superpredators. Actually. First. Lady Hillary Clinton who used that phrase in nineteen ninety four not Joe Biden still with US Temple University professor Marc Lamont Hill and Kristen Clark is now joining. She's the president and Executive Director of the National Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights under law, Kristen, let's begin with you start off with your reaction to what they said here we just were discussing president trump refusing to condemn white supremacists when pushed on at several times and on what he is saying here. Was a deeply disturbing moment last night in many respects. That question will you condemn white supremacy was a softball It was would have been very easy for president trump to disavow white supremacy in crystal clear terms. You think about the tragedies that the American nation has lived through in recent time the. Murder of nine peaceful. At the. Baptist. Church. In Charleston South Carolina the murderers of eleven worshippers at the tree of life synagogue in Pittsburgh the murders of over twenty people in El Paso Texas the murder of heather higher in Charlottesville. Virginia these horrendous incidents all fueled by a white supremacist violence. Are Easy for any. reasonable. Minded. American to condemn much less the leader of our country and we know that the FBI director has identified white supremacy as one of the greatest threats that we face in our nation today. So I'm deeply disturbed and. I think about how history will reflect on this moment and Yesterday. Was a dark day for our country. I think about one, thousand, nine, hundred, fifteen when Woodrow Wilson screened birth of a nation inside the White House and over a century later, that is a moment. That stands out. For for any ordinary, American as a white. House that embraced unnecessarily white supremacist rhetoric and and essentially that's what we saw yesterday. We know that the proud boys are rejoicing today we know that they have taken this moment to breathe life into their movement. They are boasting about how last night has helped to. Energize their base and help them to recruit new members, and so this is a moment that poses a real and grave threat to black and Brown people in particular in our country who are often the victims of racial violence. and. Kristen. Clark this repeated emphasis the president throughout the debate last night and obviously in statements previously about the dangers of the left and then t for and he kept referring to Portland at one point claiming completely. Complete lie that the Sheriff of Portland had just that day endorsed him. But then Mike Reese who is the sheriff of the county which Portland is immediately tweeted out I have never supported Donald Trump and never will, and yet she brazenly claims that had the support of the sheriff a Portland,
The Patriots' Quarterback Question
"Mike how're you holding up Nina? We're doing great. We're healthy. I hope the same for you and all our listeners. Mike Reese covers the New England patriots for ESPN. Well Patriots. Have a lot of questions. So we're GONNA get to that. Actually I think everybody does about the England Patriots. Right now to me. I think they're the most interesting team in the NFL. At the moment I love it and you know a lot of people ask me like how do you feel about covering the Patriots? Now that Tom Brady isn't there and I said well you know that part is not the greatest feeling but when you think about compelling storylines what could be more compelling than what we're going into here which is how are they going to replace arguably the greatest quarterback of all time and that is what we're going to discuss so mike it is early. May and there is still a very long way to go until the regular season begins and obviously there are questions about that. But at this moment the two quarterbacks on the Patriots depth chart our Jarret Stidham the Auburn quarterback who New England drafted in the fourth round in two thousand nineteen and journeyman backup Brian. Hoyer for months. There's been speculation about whether they would draft someone. They did not whether they would sign juice. Winston or Andy Dalton did not so. Let's start here is Jarrett. Stidham the guy at the moment. Well there's no question minute. It's his job to lose. I would say the Patriots aren't GonNa say Jarret Stidham the guy because they don't want to put more pressure on him then is already

"Right joining me now as promised on the show starting off today good friend of the show someone who has had for the first time in a long time relatively quiet January leading into unfortunately a very exciting March it's our patriots reporter at ESPN Mike Reese Mike are you still I love it I have a daughter who's turning eleven and she's not used to having her dad around in January I think he he took full advantage of it as did our soon to be eight year olds whose wait a minute that aren't usually like going crazy in January yeah are you in Denver or bottom right exactly Sandler Kansas city even even when I'm at home they're like aren't you preparing to go to a Superbowl or something right exactly that simple without the patriots meet we don't know this right it's strange and what's even stranger would be a patriots team without Tom Brady was that of the steam of course since two thousand and I I mean you know I I have to admit I will preface this conversation by saying this until it's week one of twenty twenty and Tom Brady is wearing a different uniform and throwing passes for a different team I am still of the volition that Tom Brady is going to be the quarterback of the New England Patriots next season but it might let me know if you agree it seems like there is at least more smoke to the fire of Tom Brady leaving New England then there is ever been before during his tenure with the patriots I think that's fair still you know be just because we've never been in this situation before in terms of him getting to this point in his contract I mean we're just a couple weeks away from you know him becoming a free agent which in and of itself creates a dynamic that we've never you know we never really had right I mean it correct me if I'm wrong so I'm with you on that what what fascinates me is and I love the use of the words smoke around it is how much of that smoke is a Rio versus how much of it is the media culture that we're in and you know look we all have different things to talk about and there's intriguing possibilities but how much of it is real and how much of it is sort of imagined if you will and and that to me is what fascinates me as we wait to see how this all unfolds so let's start there in terms of reading his relationship with the team in terms of what you you know saw the locker room or just from your reporting on the patriots I mean was there what was there anything that happens during the season that's sort of put in your head images they go he might not be here next year our was just sort of you know obviously disappointing season but but nothing really happened that came to mind you that made you think oh there's there's reasons to be concerned here soon nothing along those lines to that extreme bill where I was like wow Tom might not be back but I will say there was one moment that stood out to me that was puzzling and and had me searching for more answers and it was after they had beaten the eagles in mid November and they had not played well offensively in the game and Tom chemo to his postgame news conference.

"The Patriots began training again today in Foxborough. It's their first time opening camp without Rob Gronkowski on the roster in aid decade. Here's Mike Reese Molly. When the Patriots hit the practice field tomorrow they'll be without Julian Eshelman who'll miss about three weeks with a some issue and we know Rob Gronkowski? He is retired so the top priority for them is can they get the other players on offense up to speed and in sync with quarterback. Tom Brady they know they can't replace Gronkowski in a one for one exchange so they will assess the totality of offensive weapons and determine the best way to attack the opposition is it with more wide.

"That everyone is still talking about the dolphin stunning. The patriots on the final play. The game is sixty nine yard touchdown capped off by Kenyan Drake flowing by rob gronkowski, the final line of defense for New England rake was on the Dan Le Batard show yesterday on ESPN radio was asked what he thought when he saw broadcast there. Never had it kind of baffles me, you know, they kind of had them back their pinpoint the moment where you knew you were going to score literally when I saw her it was at that. Starts with me. We've got to play better situation. All I gotta do better job with gronkowski giving you in there in that situation. I'm bent Meeks him the choice. There will be his ability to play the long through. A little too far to get to the end zone. But certainly a deep hats, and that's the possibility I wouldn't rule that out. All right. So the explanation there from Bill Belichick. We welcome in. Now ESPN patriot reporter, Mike Reese, we heard asking some questions he was in the locker room yesterday is the team was recovering from what was a stunning loss. Mike, how would you describe the mood amongst the patriots the day after? Well, my picture this scene you walk into the locker room in one player looks at me and says, good luck. Getting what you're looking for. I think you're gonna get stonewalled. Of course, we were all there to hear what players had to say on how that play unfolded twenty four hours later. But instead of looking back they were determined to look ahead. Processed what happened yesterday and his? There's really much else to talk about the season's over that didn't determine actually use them. So we're still got everything we wanted front of us controlling control. We work really hard. You know, we're we're at this point with the laws, but you know, it's time to move on. We're ready for the Steelers. Kyle van noy. The last player you heard from was on the field for that. Last play. He said one thing that makes it easy for the players to move on the consistent approach of Bill Belichick who van noy says is the same after thrilling winds as he is after crushing losses van noy also saying he believes that patriots have a lot of high character players in that locker room who can use this experience as a reason to grow greenie like well done. Thank you so much. We appreciate that. And I wanna bring it back to the table here with Ryan Clark again. And you look you played a long time. You went through a lot of tough losses, painful losses that not all equal. How do you bench back from something like that? Well, I all this looks right. They're going to say all the right things because they're the New England Patriots. But you hate to lose a game in this way. It's nothing like the feeling of of winning a game until you lose you don't. So when you have a play like this you lose on the play like this. It's difficult especially difficult when your principles or the reason the? The reasons you lost right? Tom Brady takes say late in the first in the first half where they can't get an opportunity to score points. You miss a field goal from a guy who hasn't missed field goal. That was within forty eight yards the whole season. Rob gronkowski's out on the field. Because Bill Belichick makes a mistake. It's difficult to lose a game in that way. But what we do know is Tom Brady bolt. Right. Tom Brady threw a ball Cordeiro Patterson that was on a string rob gronkowski played one of his best games of the season. And so those are the things they're going to build those are the things that Bill Belichick is going to talk about. And he's gonna take this loss appointed himself as he has already in. They will move on in. They will continue to be good. And if you're the Pittsburgh Steelers, you're just upset. Okay. Happened the week before you why is that because you don't need the pinches need. No other reason to be great other than the fact that just who they are. But for Bill village that come out and have a reason to coach better a reason to be excited a reason to give his..

"I mean, the schedule is not great at Pittsburgh and then home to buffalo so too good defenses that have played well at least recently. So I again, I don't think Brady is a set it and forget it QB one all have him ranked inside my top twelve this week. I've done my rankings yet. But do I think he's going to be in one of those like I got Brady, and I'm not worried about him not thinking about anyone else. No. I don't think he's there yet like one good performance is great. But I don't know that you can count on it to the point about the running backs here. The only guy that I feel like you can trust. And I use that in quotes would be Sony. Michelle, that's Devlin the right? Well, that's the part of the problem. Right. Exactly. James Devlin was four touchdowns in in. What is it? The last three games. I think we're games last four games. Four touchdowns in the last four games. We talked about this on fantasy will now in the morning field where I believe it was Jeff Darlington. That was reporting from this game for us. And he mentioned that he'd spoken to Mike Reese, the great Mike Reese who covers the patriots force does an amazing job. But just James Devlin says thank guys. This is a six inch. I'm going to give the ball to of two hundred fifty pound fullback. I mean. So it wasn't just one of those like one thing happened. And so James Devlin James Devlin who by the way, the game the team where I get the game the playoff game where I had Cam Newton. I want against t y Hilton George Biddle. Yeah. I also have Sony Michelle and James Devlin cost me ten points. Not only voltron the touchdown but had a facemask penalty which took back forty yard run from Sony, Michelle. So yes, James Devlin, eight ten point vulture of Sony. Michelle, I think, where's my Middlebury James white scenario is problematic fans player too. Because there are a lot of us pointing right here got to playoffs with the help of James white like yesterday unstoppable. Yeah. It's going to be back to back in the day..
Bill Barnwell says all 32 teams can get to Super Bowl LIII
"At me because you are just consuming information, nonstop as football approaches. Well, I mean, Mike Reese is saying that this is the second worst wide receiver core that's on Brady is ever had. I mean. I find that fascinating that is that the second was that Tom Brady's really never want has has done so much winning with such poor wide receivers with the exception of Randy moss. That is pretty amazing. It's kinda like Nick Sabin doing all that winning without having a quarterback. And now he has the greatest quarterback of the history of college football. So there's that and then there's Bill Barnwell who wrote a piece explaining how every team in the NFL could win the Super Bowl and how they do it and what their percentages are of doing it, and he grouped them in category, Mike, you have a chance you, you have a chair. Now it's a point, one percent chance, but you have a shot. Mike Ryan is a Browns fan has been since his childhood when his I will eat that the dollar
In Washington Redskins debut, Adrian Peterson eager to get to work
"Two point how many questions you need to answer, maybe team and go back to the Rams example because it's front and center. Maybe they feel like they were bringing back. Same group. We know how this works. We don't. We don't have those kinds of questions. Whereas Tom Brady got some new receivers. He's trying to break in to mention what they're doing on the offense of wine. So it's very team specific. But as you see these teams start scheduling more of these joint practices, Mike referenced that the patriots haven't had them. They see that in some way as a substitute for that game action in a more controlled one that makes them feel a little better about things. And this key for the patriots receiver specifically because they're letting guys go, they're trying to figure out what they're receiving core is going to look like. And it's important for Tom Brady to build some type of continuity with the right. And is Mike Reese mentioned too about the Panthers determining how long Cam is in there because of injuries on the offense of line. If you can't be moving. Okay. So onto Broncos and Redskins the Broncos had to Washington where the biggest story line could be the debut Redskins running back Adrian Peterson who signed with the team earlier this week as keenum has only completed nine of seventeen passes this preseason entering his game with the Broncos NFL nation, Redskins reporter, John. Time is at FedEx field. So when all the injuries that the Redskins have suffered this preseason, especially running back, what's the game plan for AD playing tonight?

"So tell us Mike Reese, what? What makes that vignette? But more to the point that episode a classic. What do you what do you like about it? Well, I gotta be candidate eliminate something about the Simpsons in that we never know how it's going to hit the public. I mean, virtually the the one point I'm making over and over again is we understand nothing you know, which is cranking out the show, and then it's the public that tells us how they like it, what they think of it. So in that case, that's an episode where it was just one of a run in a long grind of episodes. We put it out. We said that was, okay. We moved on to the next one. And I think about ten years later USA today called it the greatest Simpson's episode ever out of three hundred episodes and to that point and I call up Jay Kogen who wrote the episode? I said, USA today. Just called last exit to Springfield, the best Simpsons ever and he goes that wasn't even the best one. We wrote that month. So at the time, was that one that stood out you? I think. The book you you, you sort of cited as one of the best I decided. No, I, in fact, I told that story I told you haven't read the book had actually I did. It's. It was a fun episode. Again, it was. I think I'm I make the case in the book the same case that we didn't always anything special. There's there was some great jokes. We liked in it. But no, it was the public told us, this is the best and it's I watched it again and yeah, it's very dense with all kinds of comedy. Even that clip you play, it goes from home or making this very, you know, caustic political remark about. I can't wait to make friends with mob, bosses very satirical line. And then two seconds later, he's just a more on trading Danish for doorstop. One of the interesting things that strikes you as if you're sort of subconsciously but that you you make explicit, is that Merck groaning, who's really, you know, the the underground cartoonist to did life in hell, who then did the shorts on the Allman show and then is wanted the creators of the show. He said that people on TV never seemed to watch TV and that you guys decided to be sort of hyper conscious of television. Both is something that your characters would watch, but then also you would have constant allusions to it. What were some of the Easter eggs you guys were hiding in there? Well, I mean, it starts off in the first. Minute of the show, the Simpsons are running into the house and the sit on the couch and not everybody puts it together. They're sitting on the couch to watch TV. We cut to our opening title cards on TV, so that's it. We're showing right off the bat. This is a family that watches a lot of television which you never saw on. TV still don't see people on. TV don't watch television and partly, I know it's because it's a chore if they're watching TV, then you've got gotta write what they watch on television too. So that's where that came from. And like a lot of things we do on the show. We took that from really unlikely source, which is the the movie, a hundred and one Dalmatians. You might remember hundred one down nations. All the dogs would sit there and watch television. I think they liked old westerns. So a lot of it is just appropriations. And I think some of the most radical things we do on the Simpsons come from the most innocent places. I'll jump right ahead to tell you the whole idea of a couch joke, you know, opened the show with a couch joke something, you know something different and crazy, and insane happens every single week when you tune on the Simpsons which again, unlikely the Cosby show where you were never shocked or surprised until four years later when you're reading the newspapers, very different kinds of punchline and headline, yes. So you were, you know, TV didn't shock and surprise you, but here we were in the opening credits and you already did not know what to expect..

"Thank you for that intimate description from brian heuer oh my greece found his way somewhere in the middle on all this and i think this is where we should probably land like this is it nothing we wouldn't be talking about this if it was nothing that being said if you think this is really going to have an effect on the outcome of the game i think we'd all be sadly mistaken this reeks of a situation where despite all that tom brady goes out and has one of those classic alltime tom brady games that makes us all feel silly for even giving this any bit of credence again mike reese joining as he six this isn't something to dismiss as insignificant but they do believe it is something that brady can manage in it might affect him in sunday's afc championship game to a degree here and here's the thing the patriots actions have reinforced this they have just two quarterbacks on their roster and if they felt like brady couldn't play they probably would have made a move for a third quarterback but it is significant that brady was not at practice today this was a full pads practice their most important practice of the week and it reminds me of something that i ask bill bellichik about a month ago when brady was in and out of practice and i said how significant is that he said look the only way to build team execution is from team practice michael you're not the quarterback the most important player on the team out at practice before your most important game of the season that's big news for the patriots thankfully the one guy that you were missing out at practice is the guy.

"No i walk why they've got a shows that the start i just walked let's do this i gotta quest to talk about things like that so with the afc championship looming it is not optimal timing for injuries especially to arguably the best quarterback in the nfl according to a report from the boston herald tom brady was injured when one of brady's teammates accidentally written into him in jammed his hand xrays were taken revealing no structural damage the source told mike reese that brady's hand should be old k max kellerman i know how concerned juhar about tom brady his career his health all of the above is this a big deal yes it's a big deals the biggest story in sports right now you mean to tell me the greatest quarterback of all time on the greatest franchise of all time played for the greatest coach of all time hopes are playing at a higher level than anyone who's age has ever played at that guy is going into a championship game against the best defence by he will have faced all season and he has an injury to his throwing hand is that a big deal at my hearing this of course it's a big deal one of the advantages the patriots have against the jaguars tactically right at least this is an advantage is the accuracy of their quarterback he's an accurate quarterback his throwing hand is compromised of course this is a big deal it's not a big deal at all it's a waste the top story this bars was.

"Current has thirty the nineteen herself the pats at feels about why feel with aeroplane at gillette the weather's like this lady as time they're going to scorned the 30's and it's the way he's done it's not just eight touchdowns and the thousand yards in the 121 quarterback rating you gotta brandin cooks mike reese has a great graf today in his is sunday notes word it shows the pass passes in the past in the ear albert in rhode island and passing yards per attempts and he is by far having the best year of anybody in the league and for that to be as weakness come again i just it throwdown field the lose at allman and to become this vertical passing team so quickly that's why i'm surprised down because they become a different offense essentially overnight from what they have been going back to ply when they had randy moss the right won the ball downfield and that had diminishing returns by two thousand nine and by two thousand ten when moss was no longer interested in competing for the football and was pissed about his contract that when the patriots said you know what let's go back to being horizontal offense and they did it and they did a great results because that's what their strength is because there france's just possessing the ball and playing the percentages in the percentages in terms of shorter passes inside the hash marks is greater than outside so when we look at that kansas city game and say we'll tom brady wasn't good well that's because it's a post player trying to shoot threes that's not right well so eight in people's eighteen for thirty eight that game that's that's not what they generally do but you're you're forced to switch your your forte it's routes like what chris hogan is.

"The player doing their job and we want trey flowers five tackles two sacks trey flowers is coming into his prime christopher gaspar i love this player yeah i love love love this player now as much as we talk about issues on the front seven he certainly now wanted them in and he's a guy that's been incredibly consistent and productive for the patriots and it's really just about trying to find somebody else who on the other side of him can provide a consistent pass rush or can provide a consistent past russia take advantage of when he russia's from the metal which is something he's also very good at you can bump him into the middle and he can rush from there and get their so yeah i mean he's the guy in that front seven right now you look to at t fan line open six one seven seven seven died zero 985 what are the things we've discussed this morning is what's easier to fix if you're the patriots is if the offense or the defense and you could do gusts that in both you know we two terms or the rest of the season chris says for week too it's easier for the defense to get better and for the season i say it's going to be a lot easier for the offense to overcome their age and i agree with you on that too i said could you summed up how i feel today we to easier for the defense for this sees it easier for the off and i think that's because the defense played so poorly yes and there's some there's some things that we expect that are easily correctable we both agree on this the secondary should fix their issues rather quickly you know those issues can can change overnight because that is the strength of this defense those are talented players those are guys that can get on the same page and i think that could be literally fixed overnight the stuff up front can not no dont'a hightower this week and maybe no dont'a hightower in the near future given the report that we talked about out of the gate this morning for mike reese he visited dr james andrews this is the same knee that kept him on the.

"You talked about how it's a serious issue invite what i think you know you're not blind to it as a player but i think he got into a little bits this guy just like basically heard him deny that one park didn't hear the rest of it so ill advised that's immature as far as i'm concerned it's irresponsible i think this is a physician though this was not stephen this is not somebody who just grandstand day so box hot takes that's what it is it's but it's this is a doctor this is a physician this is a guy that supposed to adhere to hit per rules right should know that life is you should know better somebody's it you know personal medical situation i really don't they at anybody business in he sitting here now lecturing every putt look in the world say the tom brady needs to tell us what's going this is a doctor whose telling an individual that it's his responsibility now to tell us what why wouldn't every patient why shouldn't every patient just tell us exactly what's going on behind the scenes medically with them because it'll open the door for other people with any disease right but again we broke down the other day is you had a bend bullet question right and then you had and mike reese question mike reese rules which ones microbes mike reached one was i saw his was else comments about just you since you made the yes okay now your business beat it know autographs kid okay the second was ben bull in which he got into depth about and discuss as much as an nfl football player should an active player should them because again yeah we got issues got this it's football he said everything you're supposed to say i don't know what else they they wanted and say don't play don't played all like it's a wrist you're going to die soon leslie says he's a brady missed an opportunity to send a message to kids dreaming of leading their team's under the nfl field one day he missed an opportunity to send a message to call here's the thing go always should the opportunity was they said kids you play football you're gonna get cte e and die maybe shoot yourself bush guy so what message did you on here's the message does he says this risky he should this guy should should.
