"Leader. Package. GM Brian Goodykoontz discussing the future of Aaron Rodgers today, really excited not only for next year, but they used to common. He's playing at such a high level. I think everybody's you know purely Motivated to get back. Meanwhile, head coach Man LaFleur is working this week to find a new defensive coordinator just felt like it was one of those deals where needed some some new leadership on that side of the ball. And so that that's just the direction that we decided to go Mike Patton out after three seasons in Green Bay in basketball, the Bucks are 11 and ate. The Portland Trailblazers are 10 and eight The teams will meet tonight at Pfizer Forum but didn't reach eight losses until game number 54 last season guard Britain, Forbes believe the early season defeats just a bump in the road. This is growth right now in in reaching and trying to be the best team, we can be by playoffs, and I think this felt like a little bit of a step back, but it's a learning moment and, you know, I think it's we needed it to grow and You know, kind of shove some things that were struggling with coverage begins with Buck shoot around tonight at six o'clock and Wtmj Major League Baseball Players Association has in front of them a proposal from MLB calling for a one month delay to the start of the season. To allow the nation's covert condition to improve ESPN Buster only makes sense for everybody for the players for the team owners for fans. A lot of people have told me the grassroots level. They think that the two sides to be crazy if they don't work it out to delay it for at least a month. The deal points, including 154 game regular season expanded playoffs and Universal D. H. Also part of the plan. The absence of an agreement would mean pitchers and catchers report to spring training in just a couple of weeks. But imagine that be some sort of counter proposal. Maybe a little back and forth between the two parties. It starts to feel a little bit like it did a year ago, when we were trying to figure out how many games they're gonna pray, right? And how is this gonna drag out and played out in the media and it was terrible Part of the players. Concern is we've already started ramping up like we don't want to. Have to go down the ladder only declined it again. And I know this probably won't resonate with many listening. But a lot of the plunk down several grand on lodging arrangements in Florida and Arizona and to try and move all that would be, I guess kind of a pain in the butt. I guess he could work around that. More importantly, they want to make sure fans are in the stands for the postseason. And they think the laying in a month will allow for that to happen. Who, man? I don't know a lot to sort through their 4, 17 and Wtmj. Well, you need to have a negative covert test to fly within the United States anytime soon. Rose Gray Fox will travel up next. "First down Tampa Bay Green Bay, 39 trying to work in field goal range, snip the Brady on a deep drop. Now he bonds it up. Just a field goal range down the upside of the inside. He's got his man for the touchdown. Scotty Miller. Left side of the end zone. They beat Kevin King. Oh my goodness. That is game altering one second remaining wing Larrabees call on the Packers radio network, and that is the play that changes the entire game. Mike Patton is the defensive coordinator in Green Bay. That was inexcusable. That's where they lose the game. It's 14 10 going into halftime. Even if it's 17 10. The Packers are going to win that game. And then two huge swing plays take place in the blink of an eye. That play than the Aaron Jones fumble that turns into a touchdown immediately, and it goes from 14 10 to 28 10. Defense of blunder the fumble Now you're in a desperate scramble the rest of the game again. Tampa only scores three points the rest of the way. The game is totally flipped. And now what you're forced to do is go for two and another spot. And it's a mess. Don't forget the drop in the end zone by equity, Mia ST Brown that is another play that changes the game. Now the interference call can beat you at the end. You don't get to blame the raps, though, when you give up that touchdown at halftime. So where does all of this leave the great Aaron Rodgers or the guy's future's there, you know, uncertain myself included. There's a lot of unknowns going into this offseason now and I'm gonna have to take some time away for sure and clear my head and kind of see what's going on with everything. It's really tough to get to this point, and that makes the finality of it all. Kind of hits You like a ton of bricks. Now, look, no one had a better season this year than Aaron Rodgers. He's going to be the M V. P. He re established himself, as among the great quarterbacks in the history of the sport. He was as good this year is absolutely anybody and he couldn't have led better than he did or handled better than he did. The absolute disrespect with which he was treated by his organization in April. But let us not forget that that happened. Let us not forget that. With Aaron Rodgers still under contract for four seasons, the Green Bay Packers traded up in the first round to take a quarterback. And if you think he's forgotten it, you're out of your mind. Because there are very few hard fast rules in sports. But in the 30 years I've been covering football. I can tell you this. The quarterback doesn't like it. When you do that. Quarterback does not like it when you bring in his replacement. As John Elway how that worked out with Dan Reeves, John Elway and Dan Reeves worry and all time great combination as a coach in a quarterback and then Dan Reeves drafted Tommy Maddox in the first round of the next thing you know, Dan Reeves was the former coach. John Elway's Denver Broncos. Anyone to Super Bowls without him because you don't do that to the quarterback? So the Packers made that decision. Aaron Rodgers is going And it was the Packers who made that call. He didn't decide He wanted to go. They decided he needed to go. Now he's just going to tell them when it's gonna happen. My green list of devastation in Green Bay next Coming up today on pardon Han Brady is going back to the Super Bowl, but, well, Aaron Rodgers be back in Green Bay, all the drama from championship weekend today.

"Jason there's a lot of people on social media that are talking about the way. Aaron rodgers handled the post game. Press her saying that he constantly throws head coaches or his team under the bus. What are your thoughts on. That is the case. That was not the sense. I got from his post. Game and matt lafleur clearly through His defensive coordinator. Mike patton under the bus for the touchdown right before halftime. He said we're in man coverage that's the wrong coverage to be in. I put that on the coaching staff. We can't make that mistake. I look. he's throwing an interception. I was crucial right He had the third down run. The key mentioned that he didn't take so. I don't think aaron rodgers played a perfect game by any stretch. But i do think that that's the problem with the packers is that he has to play perfect for them to win more often than not. I mean tom. Brady threw three interceptions. Packers didn't turn those into enough points. But they had the margin for error that the goat can throw three interceptions and they can still win. The game i. I do think that that might be part of rogers. Frustration is that he feels like he he. He does not have any margin for error in game like this. It's a great point. Three second-half interceptions to boot and tom. Brady's off to super bowl number. Ten and is jason said for the first time in about ten years rogers at an opportunity but again it's cut short have a great show today. I'm sure the callers are actually lined up right now. Thanks to anytime guys playing great stuff. They're really good

"Well a ref- last time. We talked to you wild card weekend with six playoff games over two days and you pretty much didn't have any time to eat or sleep this weekend. We only had two games both on sunday. So is your home. Look by comparison on a weekend like this much cleaner. I can say that and not only do i have time to eat. I have time to cook. I'm very excited. That's awesome well. Let's start with the early game. The bucks beat the packers. Thirty one to twenty six tampa bay went up twenty eight to ten in this game. What was the key for them building on this big lead. I think a lot of it's just the pressure they were able to produce the packers reduced to having lucas patrick and billy turner on their offensive line and it gets shaquille barrett and jason paul. There really isn't enough. I mean they're used to having a top three offensive line in the nfl. In fact both of those teams are and without that aaron rodgers is under pressure much more often that affected a lot of throws and of a lot more often than we typically see second and eight jerseys. Jason pierre paul. I think that was a big part of it. But also i mean as many times as tampa bay receivers willing to drop the ball. I mean they are better receivers than the packers have in that secondary in that easy pretty good secondary. A huge storyline throughout this game was also the bucks on third down conversions. What did you see from them. So well under pressure a lot of it is just the packers third down defense was just not very well designed and this has been a typical problem for mike patton and his defenses. And i think the that the buccaneers kind of organised out of their game plan around what they would expect to see on third down and so you ended up seeing like for a brief period of time. They had one hundred percent success rate on third down and like a ten percent success rate on first and second down it was kind of nuts. But yeah i think for the most part. They anticipated some blitzes. This saw man coverage they decided. Hey you know i. I think that chris godwin. Or mike evans can beat this guy and this guy was usually kevin king but they were able to win a variety of throughout the game especially on third down where i think things were just a little bit more predictable for them in the second half. Tom brady three interceptions on three consecutive possessions. Third down to brady throws it under pressure. The packers failed to convert the last two of those into any kind of points. How we're the bucks able to hold that lead after three turnovers. Some of it is the individual talent of the players that they've gotten a secondary thing. Carlton davis is really put a stamp on the nfl especially in the postseason. But he's going to be one of those rising players to watch next season that will be identifying and he's played very well but i think some of it is just to have an enormously fast defense and i think was the kind of got a feel for what the packers were attempted to do offensively. They just had a better understanding of what needed to be done. We're the players needed to be in how to hit those landmarks because they weren't really being ton of their defense. From a schematic perspective. They were just kinda getting to their landmarks. a lot. faster. Whether against the runner of the pass the defining play this game was packers coach. Matt leflore making the call to kick a field goal on fourth and goal from the eight yard. Line down by eight points with just over two minutes. Left and tom brady on the other side of that ball. Instead of going forward here on fourth and goal makes this a five point game again really surprised by that decision joe. I thought that they would go for it on fourth down a reef where you land on this decision by matt leflore not to go forward on fourth down. I think it was a really bad decision. And i think you know based off of what my twitter timeline is saying. That's fairly universal agreement. Interestingly wasn't as strong analytical decision to necessarily go for it on fourth down versus kick. And i think you take a look at some of the calculators that are out there and you know it was better to go for it than to kick it. But given the fact that they had three timeouts plus they were ahead of the two minute warning. There's a little bit more time than you. Typically anticipate so from an analytical perspective. It doesn't seem like as bad of a decision. But honestly i think that you take into account some of these situational factors like the fact that the packers have the best red zone offense. Nfl history as far back as her. Dagoes which i think goes all the way back to like. Thank you ninety. I think that plays a role. I think the fact that tom brady is on the other side of the ball with a bevy of weapons and a healthy offensive line. I think that plays a role. And i think kind of every additional bit of context that we add to this decision makes those analytical models a little bit more often favor of going for it instead of kicking that field goal because they needed to have those two scores. It just doesn't really make a lot of sense of the was

Super Bowl Bound: 49ers and Chiefs

"Did bill. We made it to the Super Bowl. You me and Jimmy Garoppolo. I feel I I may have sweat more watching the NFC championship game. That Jimmy Garoppolo actually swept playing being in the NFC championship game. Bill Barnwell is a senior football writer at ESPN and the host of the bill. Barnwell show so after two weeks Of Extremely Exciting Football Championship weekend did not disappoint niners and chiefs fans disappointed pretty much everyone else or at least anyone who wanted close close games both favorites dominated so let's start with the most dominant team the San Francisco Forty niners bill win the niners packers met earlier earlier. This season. Aaron Rodgers had one of the worst games of his career threw for one hundred and four yards. Tonight he threw for three hundred twenty six yards But the result wasn't much better. Why is that okay? So the first time these two teams played the niners won with an absolutely dominant. Pash Josh Rush Nick. Bosa and his teammates knocked down Aaron Rodgers ten times on Sunday. The only knockdown Aaron Rogers twice and while they did hold them without a first down conversion in the first half both of those games the packers movable pretty consistently I should say after after halftime instead the forty niners otherworldly in a different way on Sunday they ran the ball forty two times for two hundred eighty five yards and four. We're touchdowns averaging nearly seven yards per carry to put that in context. ESPN has a stat called expected. Points with measures how each play impacts team's James Chances of scoring on a given the forty niners racked up the second most rushing. EPA for any team in a game this season and and the most for any single team in a playoff game over the last decade just narrowly beating out the prior record holder. which just happened to be the forty niners? Twenty wanting twelve playoff win over. The Green Bay Packers would Colin Kaepernick. Ran For one hundred. Eighty one rushing yards. So they're leading rusher tonight. I was not Colin Kaepernick. It was re Moster who ran for two hundred and twenty yards by himself. were good has hat trick the first half of the NFC championship game deserves a hat trick of field grade baby bill. Will I am guessing. A decent amount of football fans hadn't heard Ramos before tonight. Okay so you mustard is basically it accident accident in football terms but it's such a cool story so the Shanahan offense has a history of unearthing obscure running back and turning them into stars going back to Mike Shanahan stays in Denver but even among those backs most particularly remarkable case. Liners did everything they could to find a different running back over the past a couple of years. They hand picked a runner who they traded up to nab in the two thousand seventeen draft never played a game for the team. They signed Jerick McKinnon Torres. ACL He's collected more than and twenty one million dollars for the niners without ever playing a single game for the team. This offseason they added. Kevin Coleman from the Falcons who suffered an injury in the first half and that opened up the door from western and most of its story is easy to root for. You heard him talk about it. After the biggest game of his life on Sunday crazy that I've been on seven. Different teams actually still have cut dates every before every game a look at the dates when I got cut not everybody can can deal. Would that type of stressing the pain and agony I went through. I kept the faith to not only myself but whoever gave me the opportunity is organization has done a great job most are made the niners roster as a special teamer at first but after he looked good in limited time last season they gave him a three year extension after playing. Well this season most are just became the first running back. NFL history to top two hundred rushing yards and scored four rushing touchdowns in a single game. That's never happened in the playoffs playoffs before pretty good for a guy who was really an afterthought until the two thousand eighteen season. What's just remarkable? Bill is those two hundred twenty rushing yards. Were nearly three times as many yards as Garoppolo the night as quarterback past for which made for a remarkable stat sheet. There was a point in this football game where according to ESPN stats and Info. Jimmy went ninety four minutes in real time without attempting a pass so I have to ask going into the Super Bowl. Is that a sustainable offensive approach. I mean we all had that friend and in our twenties who got by succeeded solely because they were good looking right now that friend is Jimmy. Garoppolo I mean in the divisional round. He barely through through the football in the conference championship game. He barely through the football. We saw a similar situation with Ryan. Tannehill right over the first two weeks of his post. The season and when Tennessee ran into an offensive juggernaut with the chiefs their offense with Danny Hillis not able to accelerate into a higher gear. Now of course Garoppolo is the one who has to face the chiefs unless the forty niners can shut down the Kansas City. Passing game with their pass rush which isn't out of the question they're going to need to throw the football more quite a bit more. We've seen the niners succeed in games or Garoppolo and to throw the ball at ton with the Saints Win. Maybe as a notable for example but since Garoppolo through that interception against the Vikings in the divisional round cow Shanahan has called seventy one runs against just twelve passes passes even if the niners do end up throwing the ball effectively against the chiefs. It's clear that Shanahan doesn't WANNA put the game on Garoppolo shoulders unless absolutely necessary and that in itself is telling throughout the game bill packers fans were frustrated. Understand police and they seem to be taking out some of their wrath on the coaches arguing. They should have devised better game. Plans to both run the ball more and stop the run and do you think there's anything that Matt Leflore or the Packers Defensive Coordinator Mike Patton could have done differently in this game. Yeah I think so I think to be fair. Shanahan might just ask pedants number. It just felt like you is several steps ahead of the packers defensive coordinator and when pen and tried to adjust it just never seemed to catch up and work there. There was one play I think in the second quarter was a microcosm of everything that went wrong for the packers in this game. They came out in their nickle package with five defensive backs against the forty niners base. He's too back offense which created the size mismatch. The niners pitched the Baltimore and not only did he have a huge hole but he made both safeties with on their tackle attempts downfield win for about thirty yards. pedants struggled to put his players in positions where they could succeed and meanwhile leflore didn't coach like a guy who was a seven point underdog. The packers punted. I believe on their first drive on fourth and one from the fifty yard line. We know the packers are enormously more effective offense with Aaron Aaron Jones on the field but the floor still Jamal Williams their backup running back. Play over thirty percent of the offensive snaps and he didn't really take advantage of move the niners movement Richard Sherman. That was really fascinating during the regular season for the niners and during the vast majority of his time in Seattle Sherman signed up for almost every every snap asked the left cornerback. Defense playing against the right side of the offense. The niners started the game on Sunday. Which chairman on the opposite side of the field on the right side of the defense on the left side of the offense against devante items and while Sharon didn't travel to the left side very frequently? He did do it a few times during the first half. The second half Adams was able to be isolated Sherman over the top for a huge play downfield. I think that played about half of his snaps on either side of the field. I would have liked to have seen for trying to isolate him against German a little more often and take his chances with

"Offense has been kinda average it's been about those two guys really yup it really has been and you know throwing Mike Patton in there who was kinda known what to do with those two guys the pass rush is much better I think Patton you know he's terrific defense of mine and he has been as important to this team as any single factor so it's it's been good but I but I do think you know we'll see how do we see the coronation of drew Brees here do we see drew Brees finally get a week wait that was last week I didn't or did you Hey I was you thought you were going to slip through didn't I thought this is day one DC was saved sees it these these it and the last thing I saw common was what we saw last week and by the way Sean Payton did not do a brilliant job manager clock in that football game no he didn't but let this be a lesson to all of us and I've I've got to learn this one that you know that that poetic justice think it's great and it's a it's a really good story line it would be perfect yeah they came so close that non cold storage happens between then and now this you know you just team of destiny yeah yeah yeah Hey you know what did you get home field advantage in the playoffs and that was going to be a flawed no matter what so that that that should be a lesson and and I this is about I remember here's a lesson I've learned I am never picking the New Orleans Saints to win a Superbowl again I'm done off the bandwagon thank time I think you're okay there you know why because all of a sudden forty year old quarterback's look dole you know we saw town which a breeze we saw Brady and you know father time was you start to turn the tables on all three of those guys and you know it's it's very tough to win in this league and the saints to me the formula is if they don't have a home field advantage throughout the playoffs I'm not taking him to go away I gotta ask you a dumb question all right because I I can't figure this out thing as a dumb question I will say I'm gonna put to the test right now because Joan I can't figure this out you know Mike McCarthy he got the Dallas job good for him we'll see what happens he's been kind of a line over the last year you know he's been kind of that you really want McCarthy the game is passed them by Rogers didn't love blah blah blah human Sean Payton have incredibly similar resumes they basically are the same age they started it McCarthy in Green Bay paid in New Orleans at the same time they both of that hall of fame quarterbacks they both have won one Super Bowl and they both have a lot of bad playoff losses why is Mike McCarthy regarded as this block and Sean Payton is regarded as this all my godi shoal Peyton because both of them have very different perceptions around the league yet their resumes in their careers have a lot of similarities yeah I I will set to say that's a dumb question but just for you know giggles but that's a really good that's a really good question I mean it and I I think there's something to that I think we probably is is this you didn't see the kind of drama in New Orleans that should get you know with quarterback coach that you did in Green Bay Sean Payton and drew Brees were always in lockstep breeze always always credited Sean Payton and rightly so with giving him the tools whether it be the play calling or the people around him it was always like there are a lot of hugs on the silence between those guys and they're just warrant in Green Bay part of it was you know Rogers is an arrogant has Americans about athletic arrogance it's not necessarily a bad thing but it just is and he thinks he's a smarter got any thought than that clearly showed in his relationship with McCarthy that went south you know fairly quickly I think you know before we realized it was happening so I think the resumes are the same you're the one Super Bowl followed by a lot of near misses in the playoffs you look it McCarthy's resume there is that Super Bowl and then it's like lost divisional round loss than if she championship loss while correct you know it's just like an aged never came back together but I think it's the relationship with quarterbacks that that kind of you know this talks to the to that dynamic that you're that you're referring to yeah because Sharon Tate now I don't know how much he he takes down in New Orleans I don't know what their sports talk radio is like down there put his clock usage last week against Minnesota was awful yeah it was bad he he he doesn't use the time out to avoid the ten second run off and then never uses the time out injuries doesn't even get a shot me ends on what the fans can't stop the Vikings at the beginning of overtime which by the way if the same said done that last year in the title game we would be talking about that non call they would advance to the Super Bowl and even his clock usage at the end of the first half that was bad by Sean Payton really yeah but and and you know what the thing with that was weird was you haven't seen that from Sean Payton here's been a guy who whose intelligence has really helped him over the years and he's been a good clock management guy you know he bill Parcells and Sean Payton talk all the time and that's one of the things that Parcells was great at U. eight U. certain Phil Simms is is you know what bill Parcells is the best clock manager coach in the history of the game he was amazing I once asked Parcells about that he was well you know I worked at it you have to you have to really think that through a lot in it's situational football Belichick's brilliant at it most of the time and Peyton just I don't know what it was he just didn't have it in that regard and that really cost them in that game talking about Glover well last week when we spoke I don't know even mention the name Joe judge I can't recall now is is no way we I down know it was ruled it was McCarthy was whatever what what's your feeling we've gotten the judge shock of him getting the job we have judge meeting the median which I think everybody agreed guy had as good of a press convert as you can have a give me your overall thoughts now that we've got the know Joe judge well you know I think he's a promising young coach who you have to give him some time I think he has really good vision I think he understands what football is about he's an old soul he's an old school guy now that's going to ruffle some feathers in that locker room believe me and the veteran players and circled Tate tweeted some picture of a guy wearing like foam pads just the goofy guy wearing foam pads running around and it's like me showing up to training camp well that was funny but I was also you know you're a guy like golden Tate is not necessarily going to take to that because veteran players kind of know how to prepare and get ready it's gonna be really physical it's not gonna be fun Belichick did it Parcells did it before him and it's physical football that's a good thing but you know it's gonna take some time for people used to it got a really good young quarterback ending a Jones I think that'll work and you've got to get the right guy and defense to make that terrible defense better with a lot of younger players so you don't I think I'm I'm cautiously optimistic about the guy I'm not gonna say home run you can't thirty eight years old never been a coach at any level but given some time and I think his vision is good I think I think it'll it'll turn out to be okay we all know none of this matters press conference is how you come across none of that matters it's how you coach on the field tell players get to use this that all that matters the most bought I will say I I watch after the fact Matt rules press conference eight he didn't do it for me he came across like a preacher like a politician I thought he was about to promise me free healthcare I thought Joe judge came across like is a football coach and that rule was you know running for office well that rules press numbers was extremely well received downing Terrel I know I know so you know but maybe it maybe that's not the same but he is a native New Yorker so you kind of get the drill I think who was there guy I really do but I think judge blown away he did very well in his interview on Monday and I think the combination of that plus the money that they the judge would have to pay to buy rule out plus looking down the barrel of a seven year sixty million dollar contract to match they said thanks but no thanks we we feel we got a guy that we can do a lot more affordable and and the guy who is kind of younger younger guy not that rule is older age mid forties but no thirty eight years old Belichick coaching you know tree save in as well the letter we guarantee anything because a lot a lot of my gosh mysteries or have not been good as head coaches in the NFL or college but what I like about judges that and this is important not going to try to be like Belichick number mean gene gene was like everything was like I gotta be like Belichick said do it that way you got to be yourself and judge knows it he said it he's aware of it and and you know they'll fail or succeed on his own as Joe judge not bill Belichick's and Nick's even show judge now the question is gonna be the staff like to talk about any feelings on what direction you goes in for see in DC no I I don't just yet I yeah I think he's going to I think you'll come away with the coaches I think bill how to reflect his vision I'm curious to see the bigger question to me is what what did you run on defense and and what does he bring now this is a team that's kind of got three four personnel a lot of the league is for three personnel and and I I'm kind of curious to see what he comes up with there the defense has got to get better and it's got to get better a very meaningful way I just don't know what kind of scheme that's gonna be no question enjoyed Baltimore weather's nice up there right just like every night we're down there I guess yeah my get some rain bike it's a win but it's in the sixties for got sick in January crazy have a good time Bob thanks again for coming up you got it thanks Bob Glauber Newsday he is down in Baltimore for the raven Titan game all about the game's Joe judging what now we'll get back to your calls coming up will discuss the possibility of the D. H. grand compromise in Major League Baseball but a lot of football on this Saturday getting you set for division a weekend eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six seven Robert checking out to one and Chris Moore takes over them let's say you just bought a house bad.

Why won't NFL teams hire minority coaches?

"Three head. Coaching spots have been filled this week. But none of those. Three coaches were minorities while the Rooney rule has been followed. Some are beginning to believe that minority forty candidates are not being taken seriously for the open jobs and anonymous African American. NFL Assistant Coach said that the League has quote finally shown. It's not the place as for black men to advance. It's ridiculous it's disgusting. We can sell tickets and make plays but we can't lead Shannon. Why isn't the Rooney rule role working? Well I think until skip this diversity thing yeah. Diversity is a great great to talk about but until you get someone the leadership position that says you know what. I don't just want to talk about it. I want to be about it so until you get older ships that actually wants to put some substance to this and this is what that you're GonNa get now if the general manager there's one general manager that's what minority and that's CR- Chris greer in Miami. There's zero owners that are it shouldn't say minorities. I guess because shot con radically a minority. But when you get the gist of what I what. I'm trying to say until leadership gets more diverse. You're I'm not gonNA have a more diverse hiring background skills. This was puzzling to be. Is that Eric. Enemy has the exact Zac job that Matt Nagy had negative and call plays any recall. Please man they can get the job. Doug Peterson sedinko plays true. Recall to play around Rivera's on but Ron Rivera was not the defensive coordinator in Philly. He he became a D. coordinator what's he got to the D. Coordinator in Chicago. You are you in San Diego. Yeah but he got his getting these enter coaching tree. Eric B enemy has the exact same job. That Matt Nagy Doug Peterson has and he's not getting opportunity is spirit but this. I don't really think that they go into it. Unless you incentivize this. Okay if you how minorities kill we maybe you have an extra three to five five dollars and cap space. That's the only thing that resonates with these owners because I get it skipped if I spent three billion. Let's just say I spent three billion dollars for a restaurant run. You Go tell me what the hell I need to cook. Cook whatever I WanNa Cook it there. And that's how they look at it. Jerry Jones spent money for this. This this mind you oh tell me why should get killed but but this notion that Oh and they brought Muhiba Marvin Marvin Lewis. He brought him in to to do that. Situation wasted the same with the giants the giants they had irebi enemy. They what Joe Judge Chris Rashard Rashard. Excuse me Chris Restoring. Yeah so now. Now we're down to one. Vacant Cleveland Reunion. I'm talking about how good already know. Angle get no frills JAYCO network skill. He already interviewed there. So you would now now the take my name off the leader and solid rubber solid. Take my name off the list. Because he's GonNa get Mad Max two and a half years if you're lucky that seems to instead that's all Jimmy can stomach now if you look at it they keep these. You look at Mike Patton. You look at all the guys they've had and these guys have had I think. Hugh Jackson stayed the longest at two and a half years. But everybody's been two years the list huge only two and a half two and a half long but you get you get these other guys you get pretty kitchens and you look at patent and you look at a I forget. Just give all these one year jazz. WE ACHE AAC CLEVELAND. That in Cleveland of the North this skill ruining rules a joke. I get it. You know minorities Cadillac. An affirmative action thanksgiving. Yeah but in -firmative action. I guess it's federal dollars. You'RE NOT GONNA get the money if you don't do this. The NFL is a is a private entity. So what can you do. What Ki- what can you give? Nfl Do not the so. I have been tracking this for a long time because one of my best friends is John. Wooten who is now the retired leader of the Fritz Pollard. Alliance and he was the driving force behind instituting the Rooney rule as I hiring practice in the national shirow all league and John's point from the start was I just need interviews because if a young assistant coach gets interviewed a couple of times times it gets reported in his name gets out there and if another owner sees that name enough over maybe a couple of years hiring cycles else maybe an owner says chee that guy. He's getting a lot of interviews. Maybe I should bring in. Maybe I should be more open minded to him. But if you're GONNA curse because if I get a a lot of interviews and I'm not getting hired was wrong why here the me getting hired cave liability with that. But John's point in the end was I'd rather have interviews than not have interests. Okay okay so let's go back to the stat that I use last week. The Institute of Diversity and Ethics In sports twenty nine thousand nine racial and gender report card for the National Football Bali. The League got actually an a plus for hiring of color. Assistant coaches right a sit a plot. Oh that's progress right. It got a deep loss for hiring head coach of Color White eight-plus assistance d-plus head head coaches. There's a big disconnect there and it shows you. That owners are fine. Oh hire two or three black assistant fine with that but nope nope. I don't want to head coach to be black. Right gives quite to the restaurant you can cook. You'll be in the bank but Michelle not the bridge. I roll up now okay so when I texted back and forth last we can use this last week of John Wooten just beside himself now. He is devastated by this this development his point was that only one. GM Chris Grin Miami. Point out is use. John's word heartbreaking because it could start with the GM right a black GM of or of color could be more open minded to say to the owner. Hey listen this guy is really bring him in. Let me let me introduce him to you right. The conduit to the owner can be stronger. Iran have I don't know six or eight black. GM right right. We've had them around the league four or but all of a sudden there's a dearth to rape Barma with Barma within Cleveland. He'd Gone Rick Smith who I know very well be in Denver. He interviewed for The Washington. Ashington John Daniel Snyder said head coach could be a head coach. Basically general manager after the Washington like who are the head coaching after the draft. The General Mattis. Okay so sometimes there is group think or shink sheep among the owners because in the end they do want to win right. And if they're looking around the League league and that black head coaches really successful they say well I want one of those. I want to go that direction right well. There was one black head coach who started to have success late in the year ear and he happened to be allied with Chris. Clear in Miami and Brian Floors off the Patriots. Well they started out all time badge for about what seven seven games fifty. Nine seven opening renders and then they basically it felt like they turned the whole roster iside down which they needed to do and then all of a sudden the last nine games they go five and four they upset the eagles and then they went to foxborough and just basically ended the season. I thought for the new New England Patriots playoff teams right. Okay so all the sudden Brian floor floor with the help of Chris greer. They're having big success. It looks like it's headed in the right drug us us but it wasn't enough of a splash to create momentum through the hiring process and right because John Wooden again texted me back with so many names he said we have so many in the pipeline. Who already started with Eric? B Enemy and Chris Rock. I think Chris Shaw Bad Year on defense but when I watch him interviewed when I watch his body language. It's a stunt man he's he's got. CEO Written all over him. He looks like a commanding officer to me. There's not enough black head coaches skip. Because because you look you look at Mike McCarthy guest job he hires the guy that gave him his opportunity coordinator fifteen years ago so you see the circle. We'll skip once you become a head coach. What do you do you go to the combine? You go to say elbow you got your drake. He goes to the coaches meeting and Yada Yada Yada and to connect with the boom boom boom right right. So if I'm not in that Lou. How do I get into loops? Because a rid of staff they said eighty percent of the jobs are never posted so in other worth people get hired somebody a friend or family member is not what you know who you know There in live the roof. It does house so to finish John. Bruton's list of pipeline candidates being AMEE. Chris Rashard Robert Sala. He threw Jim Caldwell on his list. Is Jim Colwell was highly successful zestful. Jim called wheel lost his jaw. Going nine and seven in two years Matt Patricia has nine total win and he's still got a job now he goldwell still doesn't have another job he in four years. He went to the playoffs twice in the last year he went nine and seven and they said well you know we need to move in a different direction. uh-huh and the guy that's replaced has yet to win nine total games in two years. Do you still own a still on the clock. Okay Steve wilks got one shot in time. I'm one year in Arizona and he was gone. He's now the defensive coordinator in Cleveland which probably didn't help his cause this year that much but I don't hear his name no in Cleveland right right on the list. And then there's Terrel Austin who's young stripes potential star coach and John Wootton into his list with Marvin Lewis who he thinks deserves a second shy right. Okay so Jerry. Jones did observe in qualified for the Rooney rule by bringing in. I Marvin Lewis. I think Jerry was shrewd operating waiting there. Because he didn't pick a young like like Chris Rashard type interview him because of Jerry had interviewed a young potential upcoming head. Black coach right. There's more pressure on Jerry. What was wrong with right? What's the problem exactly? He went to Marvin Lewis because he thinks Marvin Lewis is kind of old news right right. He got his longtime time shot in Cincinnati. Listen I still think Marvin did a good job job seriously. Yes okay he went. Oh and seven in the playoffs but still it was Andy Dalton Alton you re you with covering the NFL and you remember what Cincinnati before. Marlene got there was John. Carter number one overall. You Got David Cleland with the fourth. The fourth picket. You got big day to day and Wilkerson purse around the second pick in the draft year after year after a year people. Forget what I know. Marvin didn't win a playoff game. But they weren't even getting close to the playoffs for Marvin got there. No so I was disappointed in Jerry because you know my heart Hartz. I'd love to see Jerry Jones higher black head coach and I think I probably won't live long enough or Jerry will live long enough to know.

Packers scrape out 10-3 opening night win over Bears in defensive slugfest

"Was that kind of night for the chicago bears the green bay packers hackers and a dominating defense of showing take out the defending division champions tend to three at soldier field in the n._f._l. One hundred kickoff gough yes the packers with arid. Everyone talking aaron rodgers matt leflore mark more like matt labar matt to flower flower blooming it wasn't it wasn't about aaron rodgers. It was about mike petten and the packers defense ten to the three season opening win just like the the big game last year in week. One the packers break the bears hearts and that's how it all starts dan hands of the around the n._f._l. Podcast joined in the backyard of what is it. What do we call on. The spice west west rose west arose. That's pretty good no longer be dated and a few years but for now i love it. West rose were here in the backyard with of course greg rosenthal's my left mark cecil next to me and wes and <hes> lakisha here tara deaker and it's a beautiful night in southern california. We sat outside chirping. Crickets are chirpin ambient sound. That's all of mitch trubisky fans hands. Yes exactly exactly so. Let's get into talking about this game <hes> because listen i don't think we were expecting a shootout greg but no one expected game at this level and we could dissect <hes> how poorly the bears played but give it up for the packers defense which balled out right here lots of people had great. Night's goudie was one of brian to the packers. General manager brings in preston smith who gets three q._b. Hits in this <unk> game including the game finish zig area smith. I think hadn't even bigger impact the brings adrian aimo senate who has the key interception <hes> his draft half picks darnold savage and i think the two safeties they have savage in amos are gonna let mike pet and do a lot of crazy stuff back there. He loves having five six defensive backs. They're not going to dominate like this every week but you could just see aaron rodgers after the game. How happy is that. He's going to have a difference making defense and i think they can be a top seven the eight ten defense all season. I don't think there's a fluke. I mean i i think part of it is the offense you play tonight in chicago. That seems like a work in progress and you know a lot of those players did not operate great in the preseason and airy measured compared to what you were saying during well. No i mean i i would say this. I leave your credit because i think mike patton you. You got some with these games back. When he was cleveland coach in the one good season they had and when he was the jets coach when he started his court kind of feel himself in the second quarter with this defense they got aggressive and they took chances and they were able to against the bears offense it in the second half. I'll never forget this drive where it's one points i and forty then it's second and forty than its third and forty and i you know for all the people who want to tug mitch trubisky into this conversation a franchise quarterback. I've not seen someone with that. Label look has lost consistently on third down as he did tonight. There seemed to be no plan for this offense or he could not pull them out of the trouble. They got into and it's going to be a long week for him. I know logically not to overreact two week. One especially after the quarterback didn't play in the preseason but there is a there's a feeling of collaboration just throwing mitch trubisky by the way so this is the big breaking news the midway through the

Yeah. Or the drummer for credence whose birthday. Clearwater revival thought about it. The drummer for the cure. We've played a lot of cure lately. The bass player for all creed. Yeah. Green Bay Packers fire coach Mike McCarthy after loss to Cardinals

"Missed the number opportunities throughout the game. The voice of coach Mike McCarthy actually make that former coach Mike McCarthy he was fired Sunday after the laws replaced by offensive coordinator. Joe Philbin team, president Mark Murphy. In a statement saying the twenty eight eighteen season, quote as not lived up to the expectations and standards of the Green Bay Packers. Mccarthy was in his thirteenth season as coaching Green Bay win the Super Bowl in twenty ten but this is a third straight season where the Packers abs- struggled ESPN Packers reporter robbed Moskvy. This was always going to be a difficult season for McCarthy. Given what happened nearly a year ago when they forced out general manager, Ted Thompson, remember Thompson was the one who hired McCarthy back in two thousand six they didn't just change general managers this off season. They changed the entire power structure, and they only gave McCarthy a one year extension. So he was under contract only through two thousand nineteen and the structure change was this instead of the general manager having the authority over the head coach team, president, Mark Murphy. Took over the authority and McCarthy reported to Murphy, the GM reported to Murphy, it was entirely different power structure. So any sense that this season didn't go or wasn't going to go as well as they had hoped? You had to wonder if this was coming and with those stretch that they've had the four losses in five games on the road. And then coming home today an embarrassing showing on offense. It all goes back to when Aaron Rodgers ripped the offense here after their win over buffalo. That was the first real side of the beginning of the end for Mike McCarthy, as we mentioned Joe Philbin will take over an interim basis, but with that being said long-term word you the Packers go here from here. I should say in terms of a new head coach. Yeah. Well, Michael, I just got a text message right before we went on the air from a player somebody who played prominently in today's game and said who do you think our next head coach will be so even the players want to know that they possibly made this move to try to see if Joe Philbin was the guy. Remember Philbin was a coach in Miami. Mike Patton is also on the staff. Former Browns kit coaches a defensive coordinator. But more than likely they will go with someone who can bring some new offensive ideas to this group that the big question now, though isn't necessarily who's going to be the next coach. It's who's going to hire the next coach just Murphy stay in that role or does he then turn it finally turn it back over to Brian good accuse after Kuna proved himself to be a pretty good talent evaluator and building the roster. The feeling here is that they need to go back to the structure of the way. It's been over the years here. The general manager made all football decisions. We'll see if that happens Murphy, we'll talk to reporters tomorrow here early afternoon. Mike McCarthy fired in his thirteenth season is Packers coach longest tenured coach in the NFL remained Bill Belichick with the patriots. "The packers and so we'll see with him and also defense put mike patton the do for this packers team and finally courtney cronin on the minnesota vikings the big question minnesota is kirk cousins worth the eighty four million dollars at the vikings guaranteed him if we agency that is a ton of money eighty four million i expect the vikings to be in the super bowl if i'm a viking fan that's gotta happen because they taught guaranteed money for a guy that's maybe build the roads far as quarterback maybe in today's nfl topped ted and i mean when i say top ten i mean ten eleven twelve minnesota's we're searching for stability at quarterback for more than a decade and believes that it secured sex franchise quarterback this off season the investment of cousins for the next three seasons points to a super bowl or bust tally and given that the quarterbacks of cousins caliber though often come available on the open market minnesota had to go all in and move from the three quarterbacks they having the roster a year ago and eight wiped out all their quarterbacks from what they had last year and so i always thought that the vikings only missing ingredient is a quarterback spot and so so minnesota vikings kirk cousins is in place for this team i think this team is could be in the super bowl and made my prediction yet but i think that they can make it because i think defensively offense of weapons i think the vikings can get there and that is and i felt quick hits right here on espn one thousand and espn app will hear from stacey king his thoughts about the bulls and also the nba finals was we move forward here under the hood jonathan hood on espn one thousand head this up keeping it simple is usually a good thing and when it comes to rewards programs keeping it simple is always good thing that's why we made the napa rewards program.

"You should you start if you were starting to convince people right like if you're starting to convince people like this kids getting you know this kid's turning a corner just it feels a little too much like he's throwing people under the bus here for me if his goal is again to get a job which i think he's done a lot of a lot of things that have have worked for him in that direction over the last few weeks this rendered him off any list i might have had him on if i'm gm in the nfl really the only thing he did was proved that he hasn't learned and i know he thought he was being cute or trying to explain it away be humble shut your mouth and let your actions speak for you that's johnny manziel needed to do that's all you needed to do don't give interviews and if you do it's except accountability put the blame on you and say you're willing to go to canada and then go do it then maybe he would have had a chance but the only thing this does to me bert is show that the leopard hasn't changed his spots be only thing he's done maybe he's wearing like a jacket or something try to fool everybody that this is this guy really is he should have put the blame on him and if he's smart enough to now look back and say oh who will study no books anyway that he should have been smart enough to realize coming out and saying that is not going to help him so i stand by my man's zell kick rocks beat it and here's the other thing right like the other the other problem he has here is that the teams already don't trust them like nfl teams do not trust him and he burned a lot of people and i'm not just talking about raif armor and mike patton and guys who advocate for jimmy has jin's papa not just talking about those people i'm talking about the people that he lied to and twenty fourteen who may have lost credibility in their draft rooms i mean think about those people.

"What their thought is on devan house they may want to go in a different direction there but you know that's where they're at with this quarterback situation it's going to be difficult with the kind of camp space they have to make a huge upgraded through free agency i think they're going to have to probably invest another early draft pick not necessarily a first rounder but an early graphic maybe in the second third round in a cornerback way you can help out your secondary is by having guys on the field it can get to the quarterback in another packers entertain muhammad wilkerson part of his plan was to meet with some other teams get a little nervous when a guy comes to visit backers and then leaves without a contract but let the process play out here and i feel like this is attainable here for the packers wayne given their salary situation i liked the dot connecting between mike patton and mohammed wilkerson he knows them well they know each other well this seems to make sense to me for a variety of reasons does it fits into the packers salary moving forward it seems to but i don't know how much room you have move beyond it well wilkerson is a guy who's around seventeen million and obviously you now that he's a free agent i don't think anyone's going to get that kind of money if anyone gets them close to that kind of money he's gonna go there i don't think the packers are going to get them anything close to that kind of money that's the reason he from what i understand he left green bay without a contract he's gonna kinda seems to see the market i think he'd like to play in green bank you'd like to play again for mike patton and but again the packers position on their defense applied or they don't have to grossly overpay for someone else's free agent and it'll be interesting to see i'm a little more concerned on the outside of that defense you know in terms of the outside linebacker and getting a pass rush from there we do have some breaking news here wayne rob damanski tweeting out that the packers have signed mohammed wilkerson so this year from ashton packers agreed to terms with muhammad wilkerson according.
