Watchdog Says State Dept. Failed to Limit Civilian Deaths From Saudi Arms Sales

"State Mike Pompeo, reacting to an inspector general report finding the State Department was within its legal right to bypass Congress when it approved an arms sale to Saudi Arabia. The internal watchdog report also concluded the State Department did not fully considered the possibility of civilian casualties wanted to prove the $8.1 billion deal to sell arms to Saudi Arabia. Which is fighting rebels in Yemen. Travelling in Prague, Secretary Pompeo called the inspector general's pronouncement. Totally unfounded. Were very thoughtful about how we reviewed the risks. We did it right. There is a careful process. All voices were heard inside the state Department. Of course, we want to protect civilian lives. Congressional Democrats continue to criticize the sale. Saying there was no emergency that required the action.

Senate Holds Confirmation Hearing For Trump's New Pick For Ambassador To Ukraine

"Update now on two important diplomatic vacancies. One is the post of U. S ambassador to the Ukraine. The last woman who held that Senate confirmed job was a central figure in President Trump's impeachment. And now the president's pick for the job is facing some lingering question in his own confirmation hearing. NPR's Michelle Kelemen reports President Trump's ouster of the ambassador to Ukraine featured prominently in his impeachment trial. Marie Ivanovich face to smear campaign by Trump's private lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who had been pressing Ukraine to get dirt on Vice President Joe Biden. Senator Bob Menendez, the ranking Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, says that's still happening. Giuliani Esteban, Savory Ukrainian characters have not let up their efforts to use Ukraine to interfere in U. S politics. Others in the Senate seem intent on amplifying their efforts. Menendez wants the new nominee, retired Lieutenant general Keith Dayton, to avoid playing into this and avoid any meetings with Giuliani. Senator I'm not going to commit to that, because I believe that as an ambassador, I would have the obligation to meet with any U S citizen and hear them out. It was a home. Dayton has been a defense attache in Moscow, a security advisor for the U. S on the Israeli Palestinian conflict, and, in recent years has run the George Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Germany. He's well versed on Ukraine, but his answers frustrated both Menendez and another Democrat Chris Murphy. So at the end of the hearing, he did offer this reassurance. Ify is the U. S ambassador and key Have any indication that there is any kind of election interference going on using Ukraine as a azalea ever to do that? I would, of course, report that directly to this committee. I think you have a right to know that I think I have an obligation to report that to Dayton says his priorities in the country, if confirmed, would be to help Ukraine fight corruption and beef up Ukraine's Navy and Air force. Next door in Belarus. The U. S is reviving diplomatic relations in part because of Russia's aggression. In Ukraine. Career diplomat Julie Fisher has been tapped to run the U. S embassy in Minsk. Our relationship with Belarus languish for more than a decade. But after Russia's illegal seizure and occupation of Crimea, and it's manufactured war in Ukraine stone best region, we began to see signs of interest from the Belarussian sign. Belarus recently bought US crude oil to decrease its dependence on Russia and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Minsk earlier this year. But the's warming ties will be tested by an election this Sunday, and Fisher face questions about that the first component to ensuring that we can continue to grow this relationship. Not see steps backward in the conduct of this presidential election. The long time ruler Alexander Lukashenko is facing a united opposition in the run up to this election, and his regime has been cracking down. There will be no international monitors, though Fisher says the U. S embassy will be watching the vote closely. What we are trying to get Johnny is basically to ensure that there is space to ensure their space for more than one voice. In this country. Lukashenko kicked out the less U. S ambassador to Belarus in 2008 after the US accused his government of human rights violations and tighten sanctions. Michelle Kelemen NPR NEWS Washington

"Tiktok is a short form video social media platform, extremely popular with Gen, Z. and millennials during the global pandemic the APP outpaced instagram in of download eating the two billion mark back in April. If you know any teens or adults lockdown and board, you're probably familiar with the platform. Tick Tock has over two hundred, million users us but it's owned by Chinese company Bite Dance, which is where most of the political drama begins United States Secretary of State. Mike Pompeo has consistently voiced concerns about the APPS ties to the Chinese government back in July he lumped Tiktok in with wall way in terms of national security. We are now evaluating each instance where we believe that US citizens data that they have on their phones or in their system or in their healthcare records. We want to make sure that the Chinese Communist Party doesn't have a way to easily access that president trump this weekend suggested banning the APP in the US. We're looking at Tick Tock we may be banning talk. We may be doing some other things that are a couple of options. Trump Wants to Ban TikTok, NASA-SpaceX Mission Success, & Unemployment Benefits Expire - Monday, August 3rd

"It's Monday August third president trump wants to ban TIKTOK. Info on the NASA spacex mission success plus unemployment benefits have expired why trump's team is interested in Biden's VP pick and more. Welcome to Rob Song, podcast where I bring you the latest Progressive News and politics and ten minutes or less I'm Robert Cunningham thank you for tuning in. Let's get informed. So president trump announced on Friday night that he wants to ban Tiktok Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that trump would be making an announcement on these matters in the coming days he said this on Fox News Sunday morning futures where he also said that Tiktok, the Chinese owned short form video APP needs to be taken down via executive action in addition to Tiktok. Mike. POMPEO. Pointed to we chat, which is a Chinese messaging APP saying that both of these are feeding data directly to the. Chinese Communist Party quote for a long time a long time. The United States just said well goodness if we're having fun with it or if a company can make money off of it, we're going to permit that to happen president trump said enough going on the secretary of state added and we are going to fix it and so he will take action in the coming days with respect to a broad array of national security risks that are presented by software that connected to the Chinese Communist Party. Microsoft has emerged as wanting to potentially by all US operations of tiktok accents reports that trump does have a deal on his desk where Microsoft would lead acquisition of the US operations of six talk and Microsoft seems to believe that it's possible that a total separation can happen from tiktok parent company by Dance. It's important for you to understand that presidents normally can't just order a ban on individual companies like this but the fact that Tiktok has a foreign owner allows the Treasury Department to have broad. Authority over it. Now, at this point, it's unclear whether trump is going to allow Microsoft to buy it or if trump is just going to push for an all out ban, we don't know. But what we do know is that this is super weird coming just months before an election six does have one hundred, million US users, and so it is rather strange move it could alienate some I mean granted I don't know if it would make much of a difference, but it just seemed strange. NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Bankin are safely on earth after a historic flight to and from the International Space Station provided by SPACEX Axios says on Saturday afternoon both astronaut splashdown into the Gulf of Mexico after about two forty, eight PM eastern time a space x vessel was able to recover both astronauts from their crew, dragon? Capsule. Hurley in bank in two month mission was the first time that people have been launched into orbit from the United States. The end of the space shuttle. Program in twenty eleven. This new move of partnering for Space Exploration, with private companies can allow NASA to act more of like a buyer instead of a provider of these services now and will free up NASA's budget to focus on things like getting people to the moon and eventually other planets in the future. In fact, NASA and SPACEX already have another trip planned this time for six months with multiple. NASA. Going up to the International Space Station, this will take place around late. September. So be on the lookout. Additional unemployment benefits of six hundred dollars per week expired on Friday July thirty first and reportedly the White House Senate. Republicans and Democrats are all know we're closer to a deal? Apparently, all sides are on board though for another twelve, hundred dollar check like was done with the cares act earlier this year the main point of disagreement is the additional unemployment benefits six hundred dollars extra. A month is what people have been receiving since the cares act was passed Democrats want to continue at that rate while Republicans want to. Bring that down to two hundred additional dollars per week while eventually moving holy to seventy percent of lost wages Republicans additionally wanted to get a one week extension on the six hundred dollars per week of additional benefits passed quickly. But the Democrats are refusing because they think that the Republicans are just GonNa. Use It as just a quick win and move on. But the Democrats are saying that they want a full robust bill. Now, the Democrats have proposed a three trillion dollar deal while the Republicans are looking to pass. A one trillion dollar deal, and as of yesterday junk Schumer the Senate Minority leader said that there were significant divisions remaining but good progress is being made quote. We made good progress. There are lots of things we are still divided on and we're not close to an agreement yet, but we are making good progress and I'm hopeful that we can get to an agreement. Now they're going to resume talks today. Okay. But do not be fooled. The Republicans are trying to place the onus here on Democrats but Democrats came. Up with a bill back in May the bill back in May like I said had a three trillion dollar price tag. It was approved by the House but then has not been voted on in the Senate and Senate Republicans want to have a one trillion dollar bill that does not do nearly enough in my opinion. So but as of right now you know who's GonNa Suffer America, the American people that are unemployed we just had on Thursday. One of the worse GDP records for quarter ever if not the worst. The percentage of GDP lost was close to thirty three percent. I hope we get a deal soon things are super hard to pass in Washington obviously, and I'm glad that the Democrats are sticking their feet in and trying to get this thing passed the Democrats are not perfect and I fear that they're going to cave too much here. But we've got to get something done because there is an eviction crisis looming we need to renew the moratorium on fictions. Now CNBC just posted a study recently that twenty two to fifty nine percent depending on the state that you live in of renters may be facing eviction as a result of the corona virus economic circumstances these numbers are horrifying and I'm sure this isn't the last time you'll be hearing about it. Trump's campaign paused ads over the weekend, which is really weird because they wanted to rebrand their messaging and new ads launching today are going to be depicting Joe Biden as a puppet of the radical left. This comes from two senior campaign officials but the most recent internal polls show that the puppet of the left's attack on Biden is going to resonate with voters and speaking personally in someone who lives in a very heavy trump territory. The this is the talking point that I've heard Oh Biden's not the problem it's. Going to be the VP you have to look out for as if Kamla Harrison. Some sort of crazy radical assuming he chooses someone like her speaking of the VP spot trump's campaign is very interested in that because the quote unquote radical left thing that they're going to be using their ads is a placeholder for whoever Joe Biden ends up picking. By the way, we will learn who Joe Biden is going to pick around on tenth multiple sources have suggested he said now he pushed back his self imposed deadline from. The first week of August to the second week and one source has said that it's going to be August tenth now. So be on the lookout here. No matter who Joe Biden picks. I think that Joe Biden is well-positioned. Of course, we all have to go out and vote that. This is not a matter of that we have to vote even if we live in California or Massachusetts or Oklahoma Even for God's sake, we have to vote for Joe Biden, but it doesn't really matter as much who he picks. Think this go around because trump's campaign is reportedly very upset that Biden doesn't have the unfavorability rating that Hillary Clinton did in two, thousand, sixteen, all of this trump at drama gotta be Biden's campaign to respond Andrew Bates. Director of rapid response said quote the American people know Joe Biden and after seven consecutive months of failed leadership during the worst possible health crisis in generations they know that our nation's capacity to join the rest of the world beating back cove nineteen has been crippled by one overriding burden donald trump. Representative James Clyburn of South Carolina said on Sunday that he believes trump is trying to put a cloud over the election and that he does not plan to leave office. If he loses Clyburn told CNN that the American people had better wake up to trump and he compared trump to Mussalini and said Russian President Vladimir Putin is akin to Hitler further representative Clyburn said quote I don't think he plans to leave the White House. He doesn't plan to have fair unfettered elections I believe that he plans to install. Himself in some kind of emergency way to continue to hold office. Now, all of this is to say everything that Clyburn is saying here means that we have to so overwhelmed the vote that trump cannot cheat. We have to force him out of office because on January twentieth at noon no matter how hard trump tries he will not be the president if we overwhelmed the vote and like Joe. Biden. So that's what we have to do. If you need help getting registered in your state, go to vote Dot

"But I guarantee you that once they had that precedent of compelling companies to go along with this they will a guy like bill and his Justice Department will stop nowhere in wanting to get into people's phones. It is not worth the cost of people's privacy and civil liberties for the additional convenience for investigators have an easier way into people's funds yes Let's talk about Mike Pompeo for a bit so late last Friday night. President trump fired a guy named Steve Clinic. Whose State Department Inspector General in the latest Loyalty perk that's happening across the government so for listeners. Inspector General is supposed to be an internal watchdog within the executive branch within the agencies. They are political appointees but they operate independently. They often get tips from whistleblowers about corruption or mistakes from mismanagement and they're supposed to work with the agencies and with Congress to investigate the incident and then make them public it's a position that was created after Watergate as part of those reforms so recently trump has just been systematically removing these I G at criticize him and replacing them with in this case we know that Secretary of state. Mike Pompeo asked trump to fire Olympic. The State Department I G so POMPEO did interview with the Washington Post. He said that Lennox work with somehow undermining the mission of the department but he didn't explain how trump was later asset a press event why he fired clinic and he said. I don't know I don't know anything about him. So really a compelling. So ben here's some possible reasons pump hale may have wanted him fired first. Win was reportedly investigating whether Peyot had improperly used State Department staff to. Do you know personal errands. Like pick up his food or dry cleaning or like his dog at the groomer literally the House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman. Eliot Engel said he had asked clinic the I G to investigate whether POMPEO had improperly sold billions of dollars with a weapons to guess who the Saudis. So we're going to buy one. But regardless I mean trump is required to notify congress about the removal of an I g and provide a detailed justification for it and has not yet done so so then. Let's there with the allegation. That POMPEO was asking staffed. Just do personal errands for him because some people might hear that in think like what's the big deal. He's a busy guy. Lots of people ask their assistant to make a reservation at a restaurant or whatever the issue is when you're talking about any federal employees it is illegal so it's a big deal. A whistle blower told Congress that POMPEO's diplomatic security agents call themselves ubereats with guns because they're constantly asked to pick up. Mike takeout orders on Monday. Trump was asked about these allegations. He said quote. I'd rather have him on the phone with some world leader than having washed dishes because maybe his wife isn't there so just bringing some blatant sexism into it bringing the patriarchy yeah This also dovetails with broader criticism that we've talked about before that. Pompeii was misused. State Department resources by taking three official quote Unquote State Department trips to Kansas. When he was considering a run for a Senate seat there so then you know two questions about this piece of the story. How big a deal do you think these allegations are in? And why do you think Pompeo seems to be able to whether these kinds of abuse of power allegations when other cabinet officials have been fired pretty quickly? Well first of all just the fact that you would remove the inspector general because the person who runs the State Department doesn't like it kind of runs completely counter to the spirit of having inspectors general like the people who get investigated. Don't get to decide that they no longer would like to be investigated I look. I think that there's a clearly at an issue of of Pompeo essentially kind of personalizing the use of State Department resources. That is troubling. Look any any buddy who runs. The State Department has the basic tension of the fact that they're they're running a large sprawling government department not unlike the Pentagon although not as big with mostly career people career civil servants and farm servants. And they're supposed to be a line between you know someone's personal or political interest and what that large department is doing and with pompeo. Everybody can focus on the streets with guns. I think it's the broad pattern. Essentially of he's using all these different resources to fly himself to Kansas or taking his family on trips. Or Yeah maybe having. These people do errands for him. I don't think that's the issue here. In fact I think pompeo wants to make that the issue. He tweeted some picture of himself with his dog is much more dangerous and unethical behavior. That was likely being investigated and POMPEO. Trump would be happy to have a good old argument about whether or not. It's okay for you. Know some diplomatic security agents to pick up dry cleaning from Tayo and complain about liberal bed. Who Don't like that I so so I think it's problematic but actually don't think it's the core issue here and I think the frankly Pompeii or would rather have an argument about whether people walked his dog then have an argument about whether he basically broke the law to expedite billions of dollars in weapons deliveries to Saudi Arabia over the objections of Congress. So let's talk about the Saudi thing then so I agree with you like the Saudi arms dealer issue is much bigger deal so here. Here's a quick story. Last year POMPEO was working on a deal to sell eight billion dollars worth of arms to Saudi Arabia in the UA. But there was bipartisan opposition to the Saudi peace of that sale because they had just murdered a journalist named Jamal Kashogi and because the Saudi led war in Yemen had become a humanitarian disaster and these arms were probably destined for that theater of war so by Lottie executive branches required to give Congress thirty days notice about their intent to sell arms to a foreign country during that time. Congress can block the sale. So what Pompeo did you reference was really shady. He declared a national emergency which allowed him to skip the congressional review process and fast track these arm sales so he claimed the emergency was a threat from Iran. But you the way you know that's bullshit because some of these weapons weren't even ready to be delivered for a year so some emergency there so now. I'm no expert in arm sales but some experts. I read suggested he might have broken a couple of law. So I there's the Arms Export Control Act two pieces of that I. He went around Congress which is legal in second. You have to ensure that the arms are for legitimate self-defense reasons and it's not clear that they were also may have violated the Foreign Assistance Act. Which says you can't sell arms to a country to be human rights abuser and there was this big piece in the Times over the weekend. But how jared Kushner and like a right wing you know White House Economic Advisor named Peter Navarro have been pushing arm sales as just solely jobs program right like these guys have no foreign policy experience interest in you humanitarian or diplomatic impact. It's just about like the defense industry and Mark Asper. The Secretary of defense is a raytheon former raytheon lobbyists so then Obama oversaw a lot of foreign military sales right including so the Saudis. The Times piece noted that Obama average thirty six billion a year in arms sales during his second term trump has averaged fifty one billion a year. So it's huge increase so like you know back to what you're getting Alec. How big a deal do you think this emergency declaration is by Pompeo? Is that end run around Congress and then how is this arms sale process supposed to work so I imagine you were in a ton of meetings where these were considered and vetted and either approved or not? Well yeah first of all. I think there's normally supposed to be a process right. Where essentially the State Department has to license an arms deal Going forward right and this can be in. Many cases can be a fairly routine exercise. Right where Defense contractors or you know working with foreign governments and then the State Department is licensing and arm sale. It's notified to Congress. Congress has a period to raise some objections. If there are foreign policy considerations that come into play then this might get discussed in the situation room. Sometimes there weren't sometimes this routine but for a relationship like Saudi Arabia and certainly with like a hot button issue like Yemen. It's a kind of thing that would go through an interagency discussion process. Should this go forward but then it still has to be licensed by the State Department and notified to Congress. What is so notable here? Right is is first of all. They've gotten rid of any pretense that this is anything but a corrupt enterprise in the sense at Raytheon depends on Saudi Arabia for a significant chunk of its business. The former top lobbyist at Raytheon is now the secretary of Defense of the United States. Donald trump when asked about Saudi behavior like the killing of Jamal Kashogi or the killing of tens of thousands of civilians in Yemen consistently says well they're giving us a lot of money so they're not you know they're not hiding the basically the priority here is the Saudis write checks and their sell them weapons and if those weapons are used to kill children and innocent civilians they could care less what what this introduces the further point. Though that they basically blown up the process including the legal process. They're supposed to go through. And so you have a situation where trump is ignored repeated and veto repeated congressional efforts to stop these arm sales to Yemen then. He ignored the requirement to even notify. Congress anticipating the objections he get and essentially trumped up a fake emergency. Because there's no emergency today. The situation in Yemen situation with Iran has basically been an escalating mass for years. There's not any reason that this is now. Suddenly an emergency. The only reason to do that would be to avoid that congressional scrutiny and it just sounds like since. Pompeo took over the State Department. They've got into the State Department's normal process of reviewing these things so we we have the fact that there's a fundamentally corrupted relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia. We have the fact now that they are basically ignoring any kind of process that they are supposed to go through their legally compelled to go through in order to move forward with an arm sale. And it makes you wonder what might inspector general discover if he started poking around? What kinds of conversations has Mike Pompeo had with people? Where does he directed people to do? Has He directed people to violate laws or protocols? What possible corruption might there be between trump officials and the Saudis? You know what is happening. Is there a whistle blower who might have some awareness of the corruption between a jared Kushner or Mike pompeo and the Saudi government? Because the the the hard truth is no matter. What the Saudis do no matter? How bad this war in. Yemen goes the arms sales just keep increasing and no matter what the congressional scrutiny right so clearly. Pompeo minimus flouting what he should have been doing as normal process and notifying congress. The question is just how nefarious it goes. Yeah we have not heard the end of this story. I mean it sounds like this spectre general might have been at the very end of his work on this exact investigation into this arm sale. So I'm glad that angle is is sounding the alarm. Hopefully we learn more information soon. Because you know that's a big problem. Yeah and look angles been pretty cautious member of Congress. I would frankly like to see him. Be More aggressive about these things. I'm glad he's doing this but you know like this is. This is one of the biggest unanswered questions of the trump presidency. Just what is going on between them and the Saudis is there. Money involved is a real estate dealings involved. Are there promises about a post-presidency windfall for the trump family involved? What the Hell is going on? Because it is not in America's interest to be shoveling these weapons out the door to a country that is using them to bomb Yemen into smithereens. Kill all these innocent civilians and not achieve any of their stated objectives with respect Uranian influence..

"He said something about how he's not sure that humans what humans can really do to try and combat climate change. Do you agree with that or would you argue the other side? I think An and rex working on this When he was at the company and we continue work on that we step back and look at First of all we're in the in the business of meeting society's needs We recognize that one of the needs is less carbon intensive energy sources. And so we look at where today are hydrocarbons used. And what are the alternatives available and how Sufficient is the solution set and we see significant gaps in commercial transportation power generation and industrial sectors. And so we're working on technologies to help close that gap or working on carbon capture and storage to use power generation using industrial applications. Were you looking at new materials? to redesign manufacturing processes to take energy and heat out of those which then reduces the matter greenhouse gases. We're looking at bio fuels which are energy dense that can replace Dent Diesel so there's a lot of work that we're doing that we think can contribute to that space but it will require a technology Advancement and breakthrough to ultimately get to the stage where we can Reach the size aspiration of eliminating co two emissions. Kind of talk to you just about Corona virus. I know that Exxon Mobil Lee has the tenth largest travel budget of all the companies. That we we kinda follow out there. Have you guys been cutting back on travel as a result of what we're here we have? We have actually Because of our long history of operating a Lotta different locations around the world you think about a bowl. Think about SARS your these are all things that are corporations had to deal with the different times and so we have a pretty robust protocol in place that we exercise we find ourselves in a situation like we are now the criminal buyers we executed that very early on which means cutting back discretionary travel and means folks moving into their homes work remotely. We've we've geared up our workforce so they can do that effectively reduce the number of people coming into our facilities so we implemented that very early on Tab. You've got long ago when when I came out we we set the ESPN. And then what happens as we find that krona buyers breaking out in different locales locales? We will stand that. Espn system up. We've got about fifteen hundred employees and China about seven hundred fifty in Italy Another one hundred twenty five or so And Korea South Korea and so All this protocols have been put in place and very pleased to say we have not had any employees have been impacted by the current virus. Has It affected your operations at hasn't affected operations. We do some of our customers Particularly in China have pulled back and so that that meant less product demand We have Fab yards constructing materials. Things slowed down so there have been slowdowns. I would say and some of the work that we're doing but we're actually seeing that pick back up again and I I know you're not a variety Or even an economist for that matter but your gut feel as a CEO who watches the numbers on a daily basis. What what's your best. Guess about what happens to the global economy. We're expecting to see something where we have a dip. And we'll see that kind of expand around the world we have. We saw the dip initially China. We're starting to see. The rebound my expectation is and those low cows where you see that kind of contagion spread that we'll see that dip but then we'll see a fairly quick rebound. That's interesting when we had Sam Zell yesterday here who said he thinks The Energy Patch is a great place to be investing and he said by the way everybody else already invested in. It is in the position where they can't invest a whole lot more because they are underwater on so many the is when you look back and you look at these companies like Sam Zell who is I- i- conic the all these companies. Make a ton of sense but we're in this. Es investing phase where anything with any sort of harmful carbon footprint or any chemicals as being thrown out and when you look at the seven percent yield the stocks down twenty eight percent year to date and everything in the energy complex has been underperforming not for this year but for the last five years. Can't live without this stuff though. The Globe doesn't continue to turn. Tito's is warning customers about using vodka vodka to make homemade hand sanitizer in a tizzy air responding to several inquiries on twitter. The company said per the CDC Vodka does not meet the alcohol requirement needed for hand sanitizer. Sixty or seventy percent alcohol at least to kill the virus according to the CDC. Tito's is like forty percent or something so probably it's probably been ninety. What's appropriate is the ninety percent or whatever it is really forty is eighty proof and one hundred proof is is really strong fifty percent alcohol. So you need seventy you beat the virus with any of the Pure L. or any of these things you have to have like sixty to seventy. That was a problem with with kids putting their hands in their mouth after you put pure L. on them. I remember that when my kids were younger. We didn't want before it before it dried up. I'm not I've not been involved in hard. I love it but you would concede that something that that we gotta get it. We've got to get it right. We got your. Here's something you might be able to to address in that. Is I am hearing from UNICEF the Restaurants Union. The restaurants are there's people in restaurants where it almost looks like. China has had some success in in dealing with this capping it. We would hope that that can happen. In other countries around the world including the United States. But we're told that we don't have the same type of capability to quarantine people because we're not authoritarian. Is the Chinese governments as the Communist Party. Could we have a similar success here with our civil liberties that we take for granted? I'm confident we can handle here. I'm confident we'll handle it. Better than any nation in the world I I'm happy you complement of the Chinese Communist Party today but remember this. This is John. Corona virus caused us the information that we got at the front end of this thing. wasn't perfect and has led us now to a place where much of the challenge we face today is put us behind the curve. And that's that's not that's not the right it's not the way infectious disease doctors. Tell me it should work. It's not the way. America works with the transparency and openness and the sharing of the information that needs to take place It has proven incredibly frustrating to work with the Chinese Communist Party to get our hands around the data set which will ultimately be the solution to both getting the vaccine and attacking. The Chinese government is is now pushing back in again eunice. Yoon has been reporting some of what they put in the state run media where they say that. It's not clear that this even came from China at this point and they're mad at the United States for not thanking them for the efforts. They've taken to try and slow it down to this point. What are you saying? I'm happy about the efforts that they have taken but no less authority than the Chinese Communist Party said it came from Wuhan. So don't take Mike Pompeo's word for it We we have pretty high confidence that we know where this began and we have high confidence to that. There was information that could have been a male.

Yes that's true if you admit that anything is wrong and You know I think that sort of part of the wonder of the trump administration is their ability to no matter what happens wins Declare victory and say that this is exactly what they intended all along so the key question has become will people like secretary pompeo actually testify when this trial moves forward in the Senate. I wonder what you think secretary. Pompeii oh the witness would even look like. I don't think we have any idea What Mike Pompeo As a witness would look like in part because I would imagine that there is no one less likely to testify then. Mike Pompeo That you know I I. I'll bet donald trump himself would testify before Mike pompeo would And that's because for pompeo there is absolutely absolutely no upside to participating in this impeachment inquiry in any way I you know I. It has already already mind his moral moral authority within his own building and any attempt Any testimony that it opens even the smallest crack Between him and the president would go against every impulse that Mike pompeo has has had since the day that he started the administration. There's an irony there where it's you know. Mike pompeo made his name in the Benghazi Investigation Russian. Talking to Secretary Clinton this is sort of the the oddest irony of the this whole saga. Is You know Mike Pompeo. Ah The congressman would tear apart on the witness stand. Mike Pompeo the secretary of State That there is of all of the people who have reinvented themselves for the trump administration. There is no debate that I would rather see than between it. Mike Pompeo Congressman Mike Pompeo Secretary of State Garrett graff. Thank you so much for joining me. Thanks for having me Garrett graff is a contributing reporter at wired. Where have you seen that or well? Mike Pompeo is someone who who seems in many ways ill suited for the world of diplomacy in part because he regularly seems to view the world with a very dark lens that there are very bad people out there trying to do harm. I'm to the United States and that he's speaks about this in the past in terms of you know the threat from Muslim and Islamic extremists from countries like Iran. That want to hurt the United States in his view and in many ways You know tries to bring in some of his martial rhetoric from his days in the army and in the CIA to the State Department target. He's referred to the State Department diplomats as his warriors which is a phrase that just makes State Department employees. You know it's like nails on the chalkboard. They recoil from phrases like that and he Is someone who does not when he goes out on the world stage to speak. The trump doctrine seemed to be trying to call people to sort of the hopes and ideals of America. Eric has a nation he instead seems to be sort of sat on trying to defend against the worst impulses.

"NBC news dot com slash dp film and when we come back secretary of state mike pump <music> welcome back president trump announced that he is abruptly called off what was supposed to be secret toxic camp david apparently this weekend between the government afghanistan the taliban in the united states in a series of tweets last night. Mr trump said he did so after the taliban admitted to a car bomb attack this week that killed twelve people including an american soldier joining me now on this issue and many other secretary of state mike pompeo mister secretary. Welcome back to meet the press talk. It's great to be with this morning. Thank you for having me on the show. Thank you for coming on. Let me start with what this means so he canceled these talks is this is this talks are off completely so for the time being that's absolutely the case <hes> we've recalled embassador halil lozad back to washington <hes> we've been working on this problem set for a number of months now and frankly had made <hes> real oh progress with the government of national unity president ghani as well as with the taliban are twin aims were to reduce violence i was i was just a few hours ago. Out at dover air force base race meeting with the family of the last soldier first class beretta. I met his lovely wife two boys eleven and four <hes>. It's precisely those moments that make you recognize so clearly. We have an obligation to reduce risk at the same time we can never permit territory strike again from afghanistan here into the united states are negotiations have been aimed at at achieving each of those objectives while reducing violence and getting the afghans for the first time in chucker. She'll know over over fifteen years to actually sit at the table together talk about the path forward in a more peaceful way. I was just going to say it's it's. There's plenty of reporting out there that indicates that the afghan government had indicated they weren't coming coming and that they had pulled out. I is that how the timeline events went. That's false. Okay what. When did you know in this meeting wasn't going to happen. I'm not gonna talk about specifics but we had been working on this meeting for a little while and then <hes> after the death of sergeant first glass bredow and the the the attack by the taliban <hes> with a simple effort to improve their negotiating posture yeah that that that was impressive trump can never stand for and we inform both president ghani and our taliban interlocutors that these meetings were not going to take but mister secretary the taliban have been killing americans throughout these negotiations and some people had criticized the united states for participating in negotiations with the taliban during this why why now why. Why wasn't this a problem before. It's always a problem anytime taliban conduct terror attacks certainly when they injure americans or kill american so it's it's always a problem <hes> you should know in the last ten days. We've killed over a thousand taliban and while this is not a war of attrition. I want the american people to know. The president trump is taking it to the taliban alabama in an effort to make sure that we protect america's interests we will never give up <hes> gentlemen scotty miller's capacity to protect americans. We are doing it now. We were doing it yesterday today. We will continue to do it. <hes> what we have been working on. We we knew the war had continued. You gotta get a deal. You gotta get an arrangement where both sides agree that they're going to stand back and they're going to reduce violence silence. We were we were making real progress towards that. We had a commitment from the taliban to make formal public announcement that they would break with al qaeda something that <hes> an american american demand that had gone back as far as president bush <hes> we we were making progress along the way president trump of supportive of those efforts <hes> but make no mistake chuck <hes> we're not gonna with. We're not going going to withdraw forces without making sure we achieve president trump twin objectives any reduction our forces will be based on actual conditions not commitments but actual on the ground..

"Talk and they were giving mike pompeo the run around the north koreans were they called the conversation overall regrettable they also accuse the us of making gangster like demands when it comes to getting rid of nukes this is the whole basis of the conversation this is the whole basis of why we're even talking to north korea which would be getting rid of the nukes yes getting the chubby little nutjob to stop threatening to the united states of america at the rockets down this is how it works so the outcome of the follow up talks was very concerning because it led to a dangerous phase that might rattle our willingness for denuclearization that has been firm we expected this is from the statement from the north koreans we expected that the us side would come with productive measures can do to building trust in line with the spirit of the north korean us summit and we considered providing something that would correspond to them however the attitude and stance of the united states showed in the first high level meeting between the countries was no doubt regrettable mike pompeo was asked about it mike pompeo is a very cool customer because he could have flown off the what the hell are you guys talking about the whole basis for our conversations for you guys to get rid of your nukes we're trying to figure out a good way to get there you're calling as gangsters right he didn't flinch he just said this he didn't even say it was ridiculous it was just here's the clip i'm counting on chairman kim to be determined to follow through on the amendment that he may and so if those requests for like there the the world is a gangster because there was a unanimous decision of the un security council about what needs to be achieved i told you i spent a little bit of time with my nieces six years old and three years old respectively and the way mike pompeo just talked about the north koreans reminded me of the way sometimes my brother and my sister in law will talk to their children when they're acting out of line and they're saying example i want more cheerios already but i want more oh really you want more while i'm sorry you're not gonna get any more we already talked about this no it is just he just it's a very calm way of telling north korea to stay in its lane stern but calm yes exactly the world is a gangster by the way is the new snoop dogg cd dropping tuesday so now a bunch of pundits are out there saying trump has failed and we told you so right you seen all this of course because trump has been talking pretty positively about where things are because there was there was positive movement yes and nothing is over right now this is north korea being north korea moving the goalposts all the time when it comes to getting rid of their nuclear weapons or their nuclear program so because the press and a lot of pundits out there hate the fact that this president could possibly be making any progress whatsoever where before there had been none they love seeing this oh yeah they love seeing the possibility bunch to todd on meet the press oh no the sleepy i'd want him i still never i don't think he has sleepy is i mean i know the president's very good at branding people i just don't get this sleepy is chuck todd i've tried but i can't i can't make that work in my head but anyway he put up this montage that's pretty dishonest but it was this chuck todd with the montage introduces it and then we'll outgrow it here and i'll explain why this is a little bit dishonest here this is the president within hours after meeting with kim jong by the way you like that little chuckle of course they do this is the president just wants to know he's the smartest guy in the room within hours of the north korean summit this is the president within hours after being with kim jong north korea start immediately as soon as he arrives he's gonna start a process that's going to make a lot of people very happy and very safe i mean he's g nuking the old place and he's gonna start quickly i think he's going to start now they're getting rid of a missile testing they're doing so much so it's a process it's really moving rapidly.
