"Jeffrey dressed me nuts. $700 million. And it didn't. Right. Well, we should just say that the first Shrek hair was 2001, obviously like all of them, a big box office hit, but also one, the first Oscar for best animated feature, which put Dreamworks Animation on the map, Shrek two is in 2004, Shrek the third, 2007, Shrek forever after 2010. And then basically the years between that and The Pentagon were as you talked about some of these cool smaller roles in high profile projects, whether it's glorious bachelors for Quentin in 2009 or Bohemian Rhapsody, 2018, both best picture nominated films. But I guess, you know, what's so exciting about The Pentagon is that this is really the first time I guess since the Austin Powers films that we are seeing you go full Mike Myers in the sense of playing a zillion character. I mean, how many are how many characters are you playing in this? The 8 characters. Oh my God. And you created it, produced it, are writing on this. And basically also just the concept because I don't know if everybody knows what the word means. But this actually goes back again to so I married an axe murderer. There's a clip that I didn't realize this until I was prepping. This was something that was sort of like a throwaway line for you 29 years ago. I have been obsessed with secret organizations, my entire life. I think it's a little bit growing up in Canada next to America, which seems like this massive secret organization. But also to my mom had a top secret security clearance during World War II, which I didn't find out about until 1985. But it's just, you know, I have been obsessed with the idea of the masons, the Illuminati, and then in the last little while, what sort of.

"Canada, you're issued an impression of Lorne Michaels, because he's such a hero. Anna quebecois accent. You know, he's sort of so many people's elephant omega, you know? You know, I will be forever grateful to learn Michaels. He's a Canadian hero, continues to be so. You know, he gave me my break in TV gave me my break in film, and he's just smart. I couldn't have done Austin Powers if I hadn't worked with Lauren Michaels in Wayne's world. I wouldn't have known what to do. And he was generous enough to take me under his wing and tell me how the film business works. But also how to make a movie, you know what I mean? So it's as much blofeld than it is Lauren. You know, you write what you know, you know? Right, right. Did he do a pinky thing like that? Confirm or deny the existence. Well, so you mentioned and of course this is overlapping with some of those Austin Powers is the Shrek franchise that, again, another generate. You have covered so many different demographics of moviegoers that in different, maybe not the same people who are watching Wayne's world or watching Shrek or us the powers, but with Shrek, of course, I guess this is one of those from what I've read where it's like the idea at first did not necessarily, I don't know if it's fair to say that or if it was some of the title, certain things, certain aspects did not blow you away. It's the sound you make after having 7 molsons. And now it's just a title, but at the time I go, that's the title. And I guess it's the working class in me just, it's not that we have to call bullshit, but you are, you know, especially if you grew up in a Liverpool house, dude, you know, if it's on the lung, it's on the tongue, you know? Right, right..

"I always kind of see the movies as a toy box, you know? And I want certain toys to be to be in it. You know what I mean? I didn't realize you liked me that way, deal. Because it's one thing to receive McDonald's, but an entirely other thing to know that they woke up early to face the world and bring you McDonald's breakfast, still hot in the bag, appreciate you. There's a deal for every morning, now grab two loaded sausage burritos for only three bucks. Prices and participation may vary, single item at regular price, can not be combined with any other offer, combo meal. So the idea of playing multiple characters in a project, again, it sort of, I guess, goes back to, well, obviously SNL you're doing and second city of zillion characters. But on screen, axe murderer, then now with Austin Powers, I guess it's with enhanced technology that you can be on screen with yourself for the first time. A lot of the tests and this is where Jay roach enters and his particular amongst his many geniuses is being able to track both characters. You know what I mean? And make it easy, you know what I mean? Or manageable. Anyways, you know what I mean? There's a lot of Alec Guinness, even Tony Randall in the 7 faces of doctor Lau. Was a big influence, but certainly Peter Sellers in strange love, dare I speak its name amongst my work. If I worship that film and I dare not even touch the hymn of its garment, but I know that that's been my highest aspiration is the work of Peter Sellers the multiple character work. You know, I got a chance to work with Phil Hartman. I felt like he's being the closest to a Peter Sellers in this country, you know? And you know, I love, I love creating characters. I love, I think it is a little bit of having parents that have thick accents. My dad talked like The Beatles. But I've always been fascinated by how people talk. And the software that creates that. Now, so the first of the Austin Powers was you as Austin and doctor evil, the third or the second, you're adding fat faster. Fat bastard. And I guess I wonder when you were also involved very much with the writing of these, was it something where from the beginning you knew you're going to be this was designed for you to do that or it was sort of along the way. The whole of Austin Powers did something that I wrote and created. Yeah. It was an interesting tightrope to play multiple characters. And again, this is, again, this is Dell close. You started with the right guy. You know, for him entertainment is like sports. You don't know quite how it's going to end. And so what he loved about improv was, he said it was like walking on a tightrope. Good improv is like walking on a piano wire over lava with a sniper shooting at you. And that engagement into the dream, if you will, forgive,.

"And so I love James Bond movies. And that kind of international man Playboy that almost mid Atlantic accent where you're not quite sure whether they're working class or upper class, and you can't really put your finger on what part of England that he's from. But he's from an era of movie making in Britain. You know, it's almost Michael Caine, but not really. It's almost Edward Fox, but not really. The most I could think is Anthony newly. That's the accent that I was basing in on more than anything. And this was something I grew up with. What del close did teach me is make the movie or the show that you would want to see. I create the world that you want to live in. You know what I mean? And one of the things that Lauren was great about was that the movie needs to be a confection. It needs to it needs to travel lightly. But it needs to have a plot and you need to give a care about the character. And for me, I always wanted, I called it Wayne's world for a reason. I like the world that it was. There was a world growing up, you know? Austin Powers was a world that I'd love to be in. And I always remember, you know, that I have said this a lot, but dreams are private movies and movies or public dreams. You want people to enjoy the dream. And for me, a big influence on Austin Powers was a hard day's night. My mom had always said her favorite characters are happy survivors. So Wayne is a happy survivor Austin's a happy survivor. And Dell had always talked about that heroes are plastic. They adapt. Villains are steadfast. You know what I mean? You know, you could say the villain with a thousand faces is that they always try to maintain and they want to change the world in their image heroes except the world on the world's terms and adapt..

"Truth and distortion. But, you know, you have to understand where I came from too. I just never, I had nothing in my life experience with a dad that sold encyclopedias in my mom that worked in the office of a factory. In a country that's just, it's just not a famous country. It's not like, you know what I mean? And it was a real adjustment. And I guess in hindsight, was it helpful or harmful to be working as much as you did because it seems like every off season you were busy, including the one between the two Wayne's world movies, you did. So I married an axe murderer. That's 93. Yes. And in that one, I think it was the first time where you took on not one job, but two, as an actor. Yeah, I think that's the last time I wanted to work that frequently. I'm still tired from that time. I bet. I remember hearing Michael J. Fox when he was doing, oh God, the great show that he was on. Family ties. That's right. And he said that it tired him out for 20 years. I didn't grow up in this world. I grew up in a very different world. I like being away. You know what I mean? And I write my own stuff, it takes time to write stuff. You need time to Barbara stress then said it took her two years to live one year to write one year to film. And one year to edit, it's kind of how it is. You know what I mean? And everything I do is handmade, you know, it's kind of everything is bespoke for me. I don't think I'm, I don't think I'm physically capable of phoning in stuff. Right, right. And it's not that I wish I were. It does take a chunk out of you..

"I've talked to him on the phone and if he finds a bit that makes me laugh, he just does it. You know what I mean? He's not somebody who's like, you know, the traditional thing of the morose comedian. He's a frisbee dog, and he loves to he loves to play. He loves the play of it. And he's the most relaxed performer I've ever met in my life. And even as recently as the 40th anniversary, when we went on after the in memoriam, and it was Jan Hooks is mentioned and I love Jan Hooks. And I was crying like a baby. And I said to Dana, I said, are we dead? We're going on after the in memoriam. No, dude. We'll go out there. We'll kick their ass. Don't worry. I was like, yeah. Put a thousand bolts of energy into it. Dude, just and I was like, oh, yeah. And he knows how to have fun. Yeah, it was just I think those molecules got on the screen to be sure. I believe that that was also the first Wayne's world is where you had a cameo by Alice Cooper, which is that how you first met chef Gordon? Yes, it is. I couldn't believe he said yes, originally I wanted chef Gordon of course as Alice Cooper's manager and I did a movie about chef Gordon documentary by pounded him for 20 years until he said yes. And now a character in the Pence Everett. What I love is I said, chef, I want to do you as a character. Let me stop you right there,.

"Mean? And then when I got to New York and everybody's like, you know, coffee, daughters, dogs. And you know, I fell in love with New York before I was in New York. And to me, it's a love letter to New York City. And I still live in New York, and I love it. I'm not going anywhere. The second I came to New York for the audition for Saturday Night Live, which was a meeting. I didn't actually audition, thank God, because I have terrible at auditioning, but I knew I was home. You know, there's a few places that just you instantly kind of go, you know, I could live here. No, I went back to revisit a few of the clips. And one that I came upon was when Barbara streisand, I think surprised even you, like, did you know that she was going to be showing up? Lawrence said, be prepared, Barbara might come, I'm like, Barbra Streisand? And so the stage manager had a hand signal, which was this. If she comes, but I, of course, live TV, I completely forgot. And all of a sudden, he's doing this. And then I go, you just look at it, I'm just sort of going like this to no dicks out of the stage manager. And he goes, and then 'cause I don't like, oh.

"Somebody. I don't mean to. Oh, yeah. And I think that's it. And it was an all star cast. I was like, oh my God, these guys are so good, 'cause I hadn't watched. I had been working in second city on Saturdays. I had a I had a VHS player, but it was a top loading VHS VHS and it was a choice between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Saturday Night Live. It was always going to be the Toronto Maple Leafs. I didn't know how fantastic they were. And how great the writing was and all that stuff. And I'm sort of glad I didn't know, because I would have been more intimidated than I was. But yeah, it was an all star cast. It was unbelievable. And I guess was it an adjustment or the fact that you'd been performing live almost nightly, I guess, with second city to then go doing it once a week. Maybe you were maybe it wasn't as intimidating as it might be for others. Coming from a working class family who, even though I am ironically related to wordsworth, the poet. And that's an actual fact. Dynasty in England. I was never really to the man or born. And I never thought that anything was going to be handed to me. I knew I'd have to work hard. And the only thing that my parents, in addition to saying, you know, you should be an actor, is you have to study, and you have to work people. And I think there's a little bit of a working class blue collar understanding that you got to work hard. And the other thing that was ingrained in me is that you're in service. The audience is your boss. And that's something my parents really drilled into me. And I still feel that to this day, you know? I'm not a knife suffered for my art. Now it's your turn, type of performer. I'm definitely, I like to entertain and I recognize that people when they come to see my stuff are spending the ticket plus parking plus babysitter plus Diet Coke plus popcorn and I like to make sure that they have their money's worth, you know. But that's a working class thing that is drilled into me, certainly. Absolutely. Well, can I just note three of the many memorable characters that you created during your 6 years? They're exactly 6 years, by the way, right? I think it was to the day. Just any thing you can share about where these actually originally came from or how were they fun for you to do. Obviously you've already just mentioned, so let's start with Wayne Campbell, Wayne's world. Anyone who needs a reminder, I'd be surprised if they do, but Wayne Campbell, Garth Alger, heavy metal fans with a public access TV show. You and Dana Carvey from your very first episode..

"And you could be anybody you wanted to be. You could be, it's a very, very free society, Canada. I'm very grateful to have grown up there. The other thing too is they take care of their artists. You know what I mean? I don't have a problem with government. I think government is the level playing field. I think, you know, if I went to a fantastic high school, I grew up in government assisted housing. I took the bus that was, you know, won the award every year that Toronto transit commission. And I got to work at the CBC and while I wasn't terribly good, they still allowed me to work there and learn, you know? So I don't believe that I don't necessarily believe in unlimited authority, but I believe that the government is a possible agent of a level playing field. Sure. I think that you're allowed to find out who you are in Canada. I'm very grateful to the Canadian taxpaying public. And you have paid homage to them and many of your projects. Right. Well, so what was your first indication that SNL was actually aware of and interested in you? And then do you remember how that how that played out? Was it one of these things we hear always had a number of other SNL alums on this on this podcast? And it seems like it's always a bit of a vague thing with Lauren. He's not very direct about what is going on in the casting process. Well, I just happened to because I'd moved to Chicago's second city from Toronto second city. The main stage company there. That just happened to make me an alumni of the second city Toronto. Just by coincidence or just by happenstance. And I was in the 15th anniversary show of second city Toronto, and I did a Wayne sketch. I played Wayne Campbell..

"I also wanted to be, I wanted to create a Canadian new wave, you know, like truffaut, who was my hero and Jean-Luc Godard, and God, Louis mall. These were the filmmakers. And I guess in essence I would have been a Canadian cast of it, is because in many ways the cast of Eddie was the American director. But I really wanted to have like a film collective and do that. And then I just kept working. So and for second city, I wonder, you know, I think people have a kind of vague idea of what that means with improv and all of that. But I wonder if you can explain because you were doing it first in Toronto, then in Chicago. Yeah, and you said that your hero was this guy del close. And I wonder if you can talk about why that was. Down close was amongst many heroes that I've had del close was one of the founding members of second city in Chicago, and he, along with Elaine May and Mike Nichols, invented the language of improv comedy. More than anything he taught creativity. And he taught just that there's a unity in all the creative arts, you know what I mean? But he had many, many key sort of phrasings of stuff. One of the things that he said is don't invent, remember. And, you know, the end is in the beginning. He had a lot of stuff all our this transformation, you know, even painting for him was transformation to the extent that paint is constantly drying. So it's moving as well. So everything is transforming everything that's made. And this kind of unified theory of creativity, there isn't a day that I don't quote del close. It's kind of everything that I've enjoyed, he wrote stuff down, you know what I mean? Including the rules of improv with Elaine May. And just being a real source of inspiration..

And my guest today is in the words of The New York Times a quote comic genius quote and quote one of the most successful comedians of his era. A Canadian, he emerged from the world of improv, specifically the second city troops of Toronto and Chicago. He rose to prominence in the world of sketch after joining NBC's Saturday Night Live in 1989, and he became a full fledged movie star through his work in three immensely popular film series. Those built around Wayne's world, Austin Powers, and Shrek, in each of which he played the title character. Now, after a long period of taking on few and exclusively smaller parts, he is back in a project which dropped last week, doing what he does better than anyone else. Playing multiple characters in a project of his own creation. Namely, the Netflix comedy series, The Pentagon. Mike Myers. Over the course of our conversation, one of very few interviews he has granted over the course of his career, the 58 year old and I discussed how his childhood in Canada inspired several of his most famous characters from Wayne Campbell to Austin Powers, the challenges and rewards of playing multiple characters in the same project, which he first did on film in 1990 threes, so I married an axe murderer, a film which also spawned the idea for The Pentagon. Why he has taken numerous years long hiatuses from the screen and why he came back for The Pentagon, plus much more. And so without further ado, let's go to.

He's going to play several characters within the movie. I'm assuming that both Allison and matter not a breast all the things actor Mike Miles Mike Myers is up to How many characters is the question? I want to see who gets the closest in his new Netflix show. Well, it has to be An outrageous number because that guy can do about any impression. So I'm going to say he plays six characters. All right, Matt, where you going, over under all of them, except for the female lead. Um, that's pretty much what I'm guessing right now, and it's going to be a disaster for and I love Mike Myers, but this makes me sad. Why does it make you said? Well, this is worse. Careers turned. I mean, we're talking about Austin powers here. You know somebody who grew up with and this is now you're doing the video and the move. Be on Netflix. That's not going to be very good because you need a paycheck. And that's true. Okay, Fair enough. There's a few other bigger names in the show to Keegan. Michael Key from Key and Peele. Ken Jeong is one of the names of the show. He will be playing seven characters. I believe Alison got the closest because she's the only one that through a name out there, But, yeah, no way to go well done. We'll get you your prize in a minute, but seven characters in his new show. And I think like both of you, that is probably not going to be all that great. I thought they were fine, but I thought he literally just retired her like a year ago. Yeah, the shortest retirement ever. Yes, I think that's part of the point. Right. You retire a character just you can bring them back. And maybe have more people have interesting. Yeah, I love Tyler Perry, but I cannot stand the media movies. Just not for me. Um, I I again It's the stock character that you know, and, uh The things that go along with it. I think Tyler Perry is talented as hell. His movies aren't for me, but I love him. I just love and stand up. This is a fantastically middle of the road. Answer, Matt. I feel like I'm interviewing a politician again because you're like. I love the guy, not a fan of these. He's doing great work out, but the economy's good, Craig, why are you asking me questions? Move on. I saw this story in the news. I liked it a lot. There is a a bride that wants several of her friends, of course to be your bridesmaids. But she went above and beyond, with how she gave them want a gift box and to a transparency letter so that they can choose whether or not they would be bridesmaids within the letter, it lined it outlined the expectations financially of committing to be a bridesmaid. It gave them The ability to not go to things like her her dress shopping event if they lived more than an hour away, and it finished this transparency letter with a simple statement. You can say no to being a bridesmaid and we will still be friends. It has been viewed 3.4 million times. On social media. It seems like a lot of effort to tell your friends that you'd like for them to be a bridesmaid, but it's okay if they say no. And you were allowed to keep the gift box. By the way, no matter what your answer was, How do we feel about this story? I feel like when you're asked to be a bridesmaid. Do you already know what you're signing up for? I mean, you don't need a contract or ends up. Um, yeah. Super interesting, Yeah, especially that she gave him kind of a budget. That's that's a little Kind of grass, but, yeah, right. Interesting as she claimed that one person did say no. And they're still totally great friends, too. No big deal. Don't need to worry about it. Um, I have been a best man a few times. Guys don't handle it like this. I was wondering if this was a guy girl thing, because none of this occurs. The guys really just have to show up the day up and maybe go to the bachelor party. Yeah, He definitely go to the bachelor party. That's the most fun part of it. Exactly. So I'm currently bridesmaids and we've already done the petrol at party plan. The bridal shower. Did the dress shopping to the dress shopping for Bridesmaid. I mean, there's a It's a commitment. It's a full time job. Did you get the gift basket? I did get, like a little gift. Yeah, Okay. I did not get a letter, though. So maybe I should ask for that. Well timed. Well, there you go. Maybe you quit this far into the game, Allison and wait for more. Maybe you start like Aaron Rodgers. You should be a hold out for the wedding and see if you can get anything better girl. A Florida woman claimed that she saw a baby dinosaur run through her yard. There is security camera footage that shows what appears to be a bird. According to a lot of people run through her yard. She has been approached by the news several times. It was another kind of animal that she's not, you know, at the forefront of Jurassic Park. In real life, and she says, No, it's a lie. It's a dinosaur. Every Evan Rachel Wood is accusing her ex Marilyn Manson of abuse would wrote on her instagram and shared a statement with Vanity Fair, saying, Quote. The name of my abuser is Ryan Warner. That's Marilyn Manson's real name would also says Manson groomed her when she was Teenager and abused her for years and that she hopes that by going public with his name those in the entertainment industry who enabled his behavior will also be held accountable. Wow, I'm so thankful she's talking about this. Because number one. She's talked about being an abusive relationship in the past, but she didn't name who itwas and she's not the first to accuse Maryland Manson of this type of behavior, and I just think once again when people speak publicly about abuses that they suffered it, lens Uh, lens and understanding about why things like this can go unchecked and how abusers can groom their victims s O. I'm thankful to her for for talking about this very much so, and Tony Bennett has Alzheimer's disease. Now the doctor who diagnosed Bennett, speaking to AARP magazine, says that he really is the symbol of hope for someone with a cognitive disorder. And Tony Bennett is 94 years old. It's sad, but at least I'm just another opportunity to remind people that it's real, and it's affecting people every day. That's for sure. That's right. Hacking Your Leadership
Vic Martinez on what he learned as a leader at Disney
"Names Vic Martinez and you're listening to the hacking you leadership podcast guests series the most impactful leader mentor my life would have to be Mike Myers. A reported up to him in some way during my career Walt Disneyworld and he was always a shining example of what a true leader should be by just watching him and spending time with him. I learned that people should be taken care of instead of managed he taught me how to build effective teams and how to leverage people, skills and passions to get the best work out of them and best of all, he taught me how to own my mistakes and keep moving forward instead of dwelling on them. The first mistake meat is a leader of people might have been dermot first year as a Disney leader at. Disney. Most customers want to grow with the company and I assume that this personnel at down did as well long story short. I was trying to help them get out of their shell grow and apply to be a trainer. What I didn't do is get to know them better I or I. Would have learned that they didn't really want to be a trainer or teach people. They were perfectly happy as Kenny art is making caramel apples all day and anyone more responsibility in. Now focus on building relationships and really getting to know the person and more importantly their needs before I offer up any advice or offer help and career development. The difference between a good leader and a great leader simple. They care and they backup that care what action. I've been fortunate enough to be raised by amazing leaders I mean I was sixteen when I started with Disney our leaders were basically like my parents teaching me right and wrong every day. But my absolute favorite leaders were the ones who cared had empathy had natural emotional intelligence. One of my most favorite moments was when my dad came to visit me when I was an early cashier at Disney. He worked nights and weekends saw only got to see him a few hours a week and my leader remembered me sharing that with him months ago and confidence in he instead of telling me to go back to work, he said Hey Vick don't you go over data tour of the operation take thirty forty, five minutes. I thought I was going to get in trouble for for him being there, and and this leader decided to put me I in the operation second for about thirty, forty, five minutes. But that thirty forty five minutes was so impactful that I would work late or come in on my day off and and give him my best work. No matter what after that because of so indebted to. His kindness I don't have direct reports in my current role at NPR but I realize you don't need them to be a leader, a measure success as leader of people in developer talent by looking at attrition. If our client is leaving us then didn't see the value won't we offer, and that issue could be as simple as that were they think we're too expensive and when I hear that. I hear that they don't think we deserve to be paid that much for what they're cutting. So something's wrong. So work with many people to ensure that the client is taking care of sees the value of their purchase and continues to do business with us. Being in sales is really starts with me and it's up to me this at the right expectations and give my team the tools. They need to successfully onboard the client and when things go wrong on Yo on blame I just seek to understand entitles failures with a teachable moment and maybe add another bullet points at a checklist. Then I follow up to ensure it doesn't happen again and when it doesn't, I make sure to thank them I think this is a healthier way to work with others to accomplish the same goal.

That's yes I usually goes up within two or three three weeks or so of the event so absolutely evidence. Great years but You know being being a foreigner her as you are the are. US laws must have might charming to you. We didn't get pulled over on the draft Milwaukee. It was fun. They let me into the country so I'm already winning. Well that's that's good questions. Will they let you out Kennedy not want me back scanning passports sports these days. I'm in trouble. We're always looking for good people. Welcome all right Scott. Well let's let's do. We always liked to do on the show. Let's go back back to the beginning. We were having great conversations right before. Went on about About some of the movies so I say back to the beginning. Well I the earth cool cool dinosaurs game not quite that far back Mike Myers. I'm sorry thank you fellow Canadian eighty at my life. Let's go back to a little bit closer to your beginning. How did you first get into flying? Were you a kid interested in aviation was something year round at all. I always liked airplanes when I was younger and You know even going back when I was a kid. We used to go down to Florida every year and we had a condo down there and I remember one year getting into radio controlled airplanes and magazine Z.. My mom bought forming. We weren't we could see in the store and then it was in a holding pattern until we actually started the drive entertainment for the kids as we go down a little older I get it you know. I can't see the magazine and it'll wait. And then we started driving down and funny enough. I still have this. Old Radio Controlled Model Airplane magazine and on the cover. It is a seal to fifteen. Oh there was an article the guy that made one going in and out of the water One but then the actual picture of it was there and it sort of you know foreshadowed several decades later actually got into that it you know in my career but yeah I always liked airplanes and cars and anything with an engine and You Know I. I went to university after high school. I finished my degree and Happy to say it would be in geography a fee. But it wasn't really leading me into anything so our jingle researching Yo hey I can still become pilots too late as a mid twenties and You know give. The military shot didn't work out because a little tall but Yeah just started. Chipping away at the flight school with North of Toronto. So you mentioned you mentioning just too tall. Aw to fly in the military. So you're seven yet is that right and That still seems sort of I guess I get it but it so seems strange to me like this in the you know whether that was the late twentieth or early twenty first century. That something like that that you know. You're you're smart. You're obviously good pilot. Well it all all these other qualifications. But I'm sorry just physically don't fit in the cockpit. How did it seems amazing to me that we can't well to me? Is that it it because of the L. Red tape in the way that the hiring process goes took several months for that to be established whereas on the very first day I was asking too tall and they'd be like I'm not sure. How is your eyesight and Mike Take my told to do this job? And at every step in the process I kept asking and basically I don't know you know down the line and by the time I got after all the simulator checks in the background checks and the two hour interview where they ask you about some pretty intense stuff being you know you're signing up for the military past all that everything was okay and then I I went from full medical and all your tallet everything else on. Yeah and like we're talking top to bottom everything like x rays. I checked you name it and at the end of it a set down the flight surgeon and he's okay. Well you're too tall. What else is wrong with you? Nothing nothing else is wrong with you. Did you get here. And I'm like nobody nobody would give me a no and so oh I just. He's like okay. Well tell you come back next week and we'll measure you again. What's going to happen that week? I thought they were just GonNa put me in an F.. Eighteen and object back to me over northern Alberta compress lose an inch and the way to go. I didn't happened. showed up the next week. And they it was interesting because they had to hide expert. And and they plotted me out and make really measured everything. And they had a chart green yellow red but the different machines in the Canadian military and read it was no go on that was for helicopters and the F. Eighteen of just wasn't gonNA happen yellow sort of like Oh might work in you know some of the other training planes and some smaller machines but then green. It was wide open for two hooks and the C. Seventeen and and We call them the Aurora. CB One forty rowers but P. threes. And I was like cool. I'll fly that stuff. That sounds great and they said well No. Thank you but if you're not able to do everything everything does work for us so actually coming out. Wow what's it's amazing to me because if you talk to people over the years who have been undetermined to you know to get in the military military do flying and things like that you hear stories of people as you know they were told no upfront and well then they then they fought it or going going back far enough. It's like well you can't do it because of your is well you know. The doctor leaves the room. They memorize the eye chart and get into but those people usually sort of told no at every step but I hate to to indulge the stereotype but maybe maybe this was uniquely Canadian. Because you're not find anybody to actually say they just said you're still quite handsome. I'm afraid it's the it's the height it's really you know it's the rest of us are too short. Sorry it's not you it's us we're GONNA have to the whole program to fit people like you. Subways cars cars are going to make it work. You can pick a little while. Oh that's fascinating to me though you know it it it it it is what it is you. There's nothing I can do about that and it's been some effort to deal with my tire. Career couldn't find fleiss certain airplanes at Buffalo was to offer. DC3's couldn't fly one fifty. Two's for the training. I think I did but hey I'm here now. Gainfully employed as a pilot and I mean it is interesting applying a Dornier two to eight in the winter right now my knees are pretty much chance. Yeah crossings from the Left are interesting to make it work. Well that's something else that I find it especially interesting though. Is that You know if you look at you look on the career that you've you've had so far and you're still young Guy But you flown some amazing things have had these incredible experiences. And who knows how that would've How the career would have played out? Had you gone into into the Canadian Forces and and gone a completely different direction. I'm sorry I would've still been rewarding but but Maybe you would have had a very different in. Dare I say less fulfilling career to this. It's it's tough to say you know it really in a life gives us these past and you go down one and another one disappears and you can think of what all the hypothetical ways go. I mean maybe you know it could have been flying seventeen all over the world you know on CNN. In that regard. I mean the chopper thing was out in. The fighter jets roared. But you know you you never know and you know I'm happy with the path that's ended up and You know wants the one door closed. It's like okay. Well you know time for next one keep moving so but yeah it would have been would have been interesting I think but hey I'm happy how it worked out and you know lots of adventures up north and say the least a few minutes ago. You mentioned your flight training that you're too tall for the for the system of fifty two Key Tell us about your fight training. What did you train in and out of that I'll go sure absolutely I went to flight school. North of Toronto. Oh called Toronto Airways Airport based Button Ville airport which was funded out about a couple of times. Yeah Okay we'll enjoy it because they keep saying it's GonNa Clo that's GonNa close and it's been bought by developers and it's still open. It's just keep delaying. It will eventually close. I'm sure which is yeah. Disappointing community not happy about that in Canada but So I went up there. I started chipping away at it and funding my first and strike flight instructors later heather. And she's about five foot wonder five two so she's putting a phonebook behind her back in the seventy two and crank in the seat forward and up. Meanwhile I'm going down back and trying to kick a hole in the side for some with the Sunroof uh-huh for the but so is Yeah lots of one. Seventy two was the primary playing a trained on and then a twin engined stuff was on a piper seminal and I valley parked in Toronto. Pay For it all the whole time and So that was there are some other vehicles getting in and out of small spaces so adapted with that and Took took took a couple of years. I was more Working to pay for it all and then when I was done the training of wasn't any debt which is rare. You know these days of flight training because it is very expensive Had A lot of fun with that and You know just flew over mostly Ontario a little bit into Quebec and yeah some great great instructors at a wonderful time checked off all the boxes and then it was resume ta I am.
