"I love Luis arise. I mean, how could you not? We were just talking about homogeneity, Luis arises one of the antidotes to that in that he's very much a throwback and a contact guy and just won a batting title. Now he's not necessarily a superstar. I mean, he was like a four war player last year, at least according to baseball reference. So very nice season. He was an all star. He won a batting title. He won a silver slugger. Yeah. He was on MVP ballots. So it was a really good year. And he stayed healthier. He's defensively limited is the thing about Luis arise, right? And so technically he can play multiple positions, but not particularly well. And he played primarily first base in 2022. So I guess at the moment they have any number of places where he would probably be their best player at that position. So it's not really a limiting factor for them, I suppose. And age wise, what, Lopez is 26 and arises right around there. He's turning 26 in April. And I guess he's a little further from free agency than Pablo Lopez is. So kind of like for like in the sense that it's mid 20s players who have established themselves in the last couple of seasons, really. Maybe a slightly longer track record for Lopez, who debuted maybe a little bit before Orion did. Just a year before, I guess, but roughly the same age. Anyway, interesting trade. Interesting trade, kind of weird trade. It's kind of a weird trade. Yeah, the twins, they needed pitching, though. I mean, it's one of those makes sense for both sides to some extent. I mean, most trades are. It wouldn't be done. These wouldn't be consummated if they didn't make some sense for both sides. So I guess we'll have to see what the prospect packages are and everything. But I guess I'm glad that the marwan's finally pulled the trigger on a trade. I don't know whether it was the best return that they possibly could have gotten, but arises a really nice and fun player and they just had to do something to address their roster imbalance. So it doesn't necessarily make them that much better, I guess, in the short term, but it makes them a little less lopsided. It's progress. It's progress. It's still. It's still feels like moving, moving things around, you know, and ending up short relative to the rest of the division, but I guess you have to start. Somewhere, man, you got to hope that everybody stays healthy on my pitching stuff, like Dan's point was well taken in the zips, which you should still read because I think it is worthwhile to think about. You know, a lot of guys with long injury histories on that Marlin staff. And now there are fewer of them with innings to spread around. What are you going to do? Twins rotation, that looks a lot stronger in my eyes with Papua than without though. They might be, you know? We're going to have to reassess them. I just sort of not thinking about them for a lot of the off season because they were careless. And then they were creative full, but then I still wasn't thinking about them as much because it was like, well, okay, you had that before. Now what? So much. Christmas came very late, but it did come ultimately. All right, we can end or transition with this one very short, I don't know whether anyone will come to your mind, but Brian says, who is the best player you instantly forgot about the second he retired? Let me explain, I was listening to a podcast from 2019 that mentioned Nick marches. I had forgotten about him, and he had a great career. He was famous for being forgotten about while he was still active on this podcast. We talked about him being the best player without various honors without being an all star, although eventually he did get an all star appearance in 2018 and also appeared on MVP ballots that year. So prior to that point, he was maybe the best player making a run at being the best player without an appearance or ever appearing on an MVP ballot. So he was kind of forgotten in his own time. But Brian says who's our player like that, Jeff Francois, Alex Gordon, do your jobs, keep this from happening to you. I think they do to a certain extent, because I'm always reading about baseball and looking at leader boards, right? And so no prominent name is ever very far from my mind. Forgotten about it's not like you have no memory of the person existing. Right. It's just like, oh, I haven't thought about that guy for a while, right? I remembering a guy. So you'd probably have to go back further than Nick marches to get to that level. Although, when we got this email, I was like, oh yeah, Nick Murphy. Okay, well there you go. Maybe it's Nick Martin is for us. Yeah, I just looked at a leaderboard, just trying to look at players in our lifetimes who kind of made me go, oh yeah, yeah. I don't know. There were a few who kind of probably the best player who made me think, I hadn't thought about him for a while, is Mike Cameron, who maybe you've probably thought about more recently as a Mariners person. But again, perpetually underrated and in retrospect, extremely underrated, really great player. But just, you know, it's not like I forgot about my cameras, but I just maybe hadn't thought about him recently, Travis fryman also stood out and I was like, oh yeah, Travis framing. I kind of liked him. He was good. Alex Gordon is not a bad one, actually, because I haven't really thought a whole lot about lately. He was very good too. You know who might Ben really be kind of in that group for me? Who's that? Mike Moustakas. You know, couldn't you see, I imagine my new sock still has designs on playing, but like when he goes, you know, someone's gonna say like, hey, remember Mike musso, it's not gonna be like, oh yeah. When Mike Moustakas played like improbably good infield defense, here's a question. Are we just naming Kansas City Royals? Yeah, maybe. I mean, he wasn't as good as Nick marches, right? I mean, he was maybe as celebrated as Nick Marquez. He was like a three time all star. But on a career level, he was not the player that Nick marques was. So maybe we thought more about mustaches than we should have relative to marques, marques, mustaches, man. While they were there, we probably paid a disproportionate amount of attention. We stock is relative to markets, but I had to go down the leaderboard. The first name where I was really like, oh wow. And this was maybe because he played less recently. But Robbie Thompson? Robbie Thompson, I just like I had to be like, oh, right, Robbie Thompson. Who was quite a good player and I think maybe the confusion is that you got your Bobby Thompson and your Robbie Thompson and their oh, yeah, yeah. You know, they're both most notably giants. And almost identical career value, Robbie Thompson 33.8 war, Bobby Thompson, 33 point wait. Hold on. Wait for doing a Jeff Sullivan. Wait, what moment here? They have identical words according to baseball reference. They're both 33.8 war, Bobby Thompson and Robbie Thompson. Wow. Yeah. You got Robert Brown Thompson, Robert Randall Thompson. Identical worse and most famous for being giant. So I think that's spooky. It is. So what with their having identical values? I mean, they were different types of players than they played at different times. But I feel like Robbie Thompson has just been sort of subsumed. Bobby Thompson as a giant and then Robbie Thompson is like, wait, that's a whole other guy. And he stopped playing in 96 and I was still pretty young then, so I didn't get to see prime Robbie Thompson, but he was a really good player too. So I think that would be the best answer for me. But I took that one just because I'm going to wrap up with a quick step last year and marches and Bobby Thompson will both be relevant. If I saw somebody else and then the teaser didn't get disgusted and

"There and all the taste there, but it was the first time that I've gone there. I've always wanted to go and it was absolutely great. What did you guys do during a Christmas breaks? I mean, I just laid low in Nebraska, had some lovely runs us, and just really lived it up here. We can't talk about what I did. I didn't did nothing. I need your opinion on this buster. Sarah's caused some consternation on the college game day podcast by sharing the Nebraska delicacy of chili and cinnamon rolls, which her family had for their Christmas dinner. And as an east coaster, a northeaster, that is an interesting combination to me. I was wondering what your take is buster. See, that would be okay. In the last ten years, I definitely ventured away from the turkey standard on Christmas Day. Of course, I think that's gone away and had some steak. I'm very open to sort of venturing out to Sarah. I fully back you. I don't know if that chili on Christmas Day would necessarily be my first choice. But you know what? Thanksgiving has become the turkey day, right? And I think in Christmas anything goes. So I'm backing you up on that one, Sarah. Well, I think you're cute. And also I would like to preface that the cinnamon rolls do not have frosting on them. Okay, they are the Miller and paint cinnamon rolls that have no frosting. So basically, if you eat cornbread and chili and you're rolling your eyes at this, how dare you is how I'm going to respectfully say that. Okay, I don't have a problem with anything you said right up until the moment where you said your cinnamon rolls don't have frosting on them. What's the point of heading cinnamon rolls? If you don't have frosting on them. Okay, but the frosting and the chili, that's a little much. I will say the cinnamon roll with frosting and chili. That's a bit far, but with no frosting, it's totally fine. It's a classic. Taylor? This is problematic. I'm having a hard time moving on. It's been a couple weeks since Sarah revealed this to me, so. I guess we'll have to talk some baseball try and wash my palate clean. Right. And we're going to be talking a lot of baseball today. We got Sierra Lang's coming up, we got Paul and bikinis coming up. And Yankees gentle manager Brian cashman to talk about the Aaron judge negotiations and how they played out and what more the Yankees might do before we get to spring training, which guys is only about now what? 5, 6 weeks away. It's right around the corner. Some huge deals have happened in the interim since the last time we had a podcast. Rafael Devers and the Red Sox. Finalizing an 11 year $331 million deal, the Red Sox totally waved a white flag. They had to sign him. We'll talk about that on the pod coming up. Carlos Correa's deal is still unsigned, there was a tweet out last night that he's been in contact with another team. I just don't think he's going to get the $300 million plus deal given the concerns that have popped up in a couple of his physical examinations. The Red Sox signed Corey Kluber to a one year deal, the reds release Mike Moustakas, who he has another year left on his contract to $22 million in 2023. The Diamondback signed all star third baseman Evan Longoria to a one year deal. Taylor, how about the Orioles? Making big moves, they traded for Ryan or her and then they DF 8 and two days later. What did they doing? I don't know, I don't know. I thought it was funny that someone would pay money for Tyler Nevin personally because I'm sure he's a nice guy, but he is just a below average baseball player. So a lot of small deals that the red section or the oils are making. I thought the word significant was going to be involved here, Taylor. I keep on waiting for significant because that's what we heard they were going to do during this season. This off season and they haven't been doing that at all. The Yankees named Omar mania, former mets general managers, senior adviser and their baseball operations to go along with Brian sabian, who left the San Francisco Giants to join the Yankees front office reportedly and will ask Brian about this to better balance the old school and the new school as they move forward. Wade Miley, veteran left hander agreed to a one year deal with the Milwaukee Brewers $4.5 million. Zack's Davies went back to the Diamondbacks one year, $5 million. Eric Hosmer is signing with the Chicago Cubs for minimum wage effectively in baseball terms because he has three years and $39 million left on the contract. He signed with the Padres back in 2018. Hosmer is still a good defensive first baseman as we talked about in the pod last time with David Ross for the cubs, the quickest path into relevance is through defense and pitching and Hosmer will help out with that. The brewers also acquired pitcher Bryce Wilson from the pirates for cash. You mentioned that the tigers paid the Orioles for Tyler Nevin. It was an interesting story over the break, the ten Major League Baseball umpires retiring the most since 1999 among those, respected crew chiefs, Ted Barrett, Greg Gibson, Tom hall, and Sam Holbrooke, Jerry meals, Jim Reynolds, Bill welke. So a lot of umpire faces will change for 2023. Nathan Navalny agreed to a two year deal with the Texas Rangers. They loaded up on their rotation. This off season, including the addition of Jacob de Grom, rich hill signed with a pirates, Michael conforto, gets two years with the San Francisco Giants and today the Dodgers are expected to announce their decision about whether or not to retain Trevor Bauer, who suspension has been truncated by an arbitrator's decision. I'm going to be talking about that with Paul heim bikinis coming up. President of baseball operation for the cubs was in a press conference with dansby Swanson, discussing Swanson's new 7 year deal with the cubs.

"I think you're going to have a really hard time convincing Bob Castellani and maybe convincing. They crawl that they should really go all in. I think it's on the players to put pressure on ownership and put pressure on the front office by the performances over the next three weeks to put pressure on this front office to the point that they almost have no choice but to go all in. I don't know how you really do that now, with a team that's eight games out of first place and has to leapfrog to tins in order to win the division. Yeah, although you know it can be done now. Can you can lightning strike twice in the season, and it's happened before, But I mean, look at that incredible run where the Reds were just to sniff away from first place in the course of a couple weeks where they went on their terror and beat the teams above them. Um, you know, can you do that again? Probably not. I would say I mean, because again, everything tends to even out There's a reason why the Cubs in Milwaukee are playing the ball they are and, um, generally, you know, you play to your own level, so getting those extra pieces in place, But then again, you know, we added pieces. In the off season. You know, guys like Shoko Akiyama and others were okay. This guy's gonna What's you know? So so you know, you took a gamble and lost on some guys, I would say, And certainly the injuries factor as well. I won't discount that. All teams obviously have injuries right now. I just don't see how you work around that with the guys. You have all of a sudden you're going to magically become a A World Series team. What the talent you have, And I think so, Yeah, Look, I tend to think that the Reds are going to get better. The Reds are going to have to play better and, frankly, that's going to involve them overachieving. I mean, is it coming into the reason? I think a lot of us thought this was roughly 500 team right, and they are most people you know, before before opening day, all right ballpark where they going to finish, most would have said. 80 wins 81 win 79 wins 82 wins something in that range. I don't think they've done anything over the first half of the season to really dissuade people from that day today, heading into the final game of the first half of the season, there are 500 baseball team, So let's just do the math, and I don't want to be Debbie Downer, either because there's nothing I want more than a September pennant race Milwaukee Brewers right now who have won nine straight games. We're in Pittsburgh this weekend to play one of the worst teams in baseball. The Milwaukee Brewers have set basically a 97 win peace. Right now, Chances are they're not going to win 97 games, but they're playing good. It's 5 98 baseball 97 wins. Let's just say they play 500 ball the rest of the way Since they have 80 games remaining, that means they finished with 89 victories. So for the Reds to tie the Milwaukee Brewers, they're going to have to win 49 of their last 82 games. That's a lot to ask. Now. They play the Brewers a ton over the next couple of weeks for next weekend in Milwaukee and three at home with them right after the All Star break. But again, let's do the math here. So a team that we thought was going to be roughly 500 before the year. That is exactly 500. Now we are all of a sudden expecting them to play whatever 49 33 is, but that's 98 win ball over the course of a full season. We're expecting that. It could happen, I guess. But again, I think when you put it in those terms of illustrates How huge of an uphill climb. They have, Um, which tends to make me believe Mo that initially, as I said, I think they just stay in Paddick. Okay, with everyone expected to be 500. We're 500 teen. Great. We we we met. We hit the mark now or some fans and the players gonna be upset? Yeah, but, um, then you turn around and maybe do something the off season. Um, I mean, that's feasible, right? It's feasible again. I think I think it would really help if somebody in upper management would articulate What the plan is going to be this offseason because again, the playing this off season was just kind of tread water. We're not really going to go in any one specific direction. We're not going to actively go out and try to make the team better. Right, but they didn't unload guys. I mean, even after Trevor Bauer left and after they gave away Rice, Selig Lacey some Archie Bradley. They still at the core of a decent club, right? I mean, again. Cast the honest and Winker are are starting outfielders on the All Star team. They didn't move uranium as far as they didn't move, Joey Votto, you know they didn't move Mike Moustakas. They didn't go in any one specific direction. I think it's really hard to answer the question What the Reds can infer do around the trade deadline when we don't know what Direction. They're going to go in this off season. Are they going to take the $30 million that they took out of the team's payroll this past off season and put it back into the club? Do we know who's going to be making the roster decisions? Is Nick call coming back if he's coming back with his capacity going to be? Is he the president of baseball operations? Well, they hire a general manager to serve under him when I hire a president of baseball operations. And have Nick crawl serve under that guy Who's going to be making the decisions about the manager?.

Although Wade Miley is a pitcher boost Akesson Castano's If Moose is healthy, he's playing. Unfortunately, it's like he's never healthy. And Cassie Honest is having a great year guy you got in the same off season. Maybe didn't cost quite as much. But for a Reds team that just gave away two pictures this offseason and shed payroll by 30 million bucks, They got a guy making seven mil that never Please. He started five games all year. This is not to say that they're wrong. Frankly, I'd rather see Tyler Nick went out there as well. It does tell me that there is a priority on playing the best guys, which is a major major development. Frankly, I think there are times in which that wasn't the priority here, and I think there are times when that's not the priority elsewhere. When Tyler Sequin was dinged up for a couple of days. Tj antone they say is so that is a step in the right direction. The reds have not lost since tj antone went on the injured list which there's no correlation there. There's no causation there. It's just it's kind of coincidental but who among us would have thought that this team would rip off five straight wins. Once we saw the tj antone had to go on the injured list given how good he has been out of the bullpen and over the course of the season this bullpen has been so instant reaction from milwaukee. As soon as the game goes finally we have a lot to get to a little bit later on as it relates to the cincinnati reds pat. Brennan join our show in just about thirty five minutes. Honda Dealers on Dave Armbruster when Joey Votto went on the injured list. Back on May 7th David Bell re shoveled the infield, moving Mike Moustakas the first base Hey, you Hey. Neo swore eyes back the third and inserting Kyle Farmer is the starting shortstop since becoming an everyday player, farmers hitting 2 61 with a pair of home runs. And six R B I s he was asked how the swing change he made over the offseason has helped him. I feel pretty good about it makes him site adjustments after 100 backs you can kind of get a pretty good sense of what's going on, and I've been getting beat by some fastballs as of lately and trying to hit them or the fastball out front. I've done a good job of hopefully, you know, keep going with leading off the slider, sometimes in the dirt and taking some pitches and working that bad, But I missed some fastballs that I'd normally should be able to hit, especially last game against the Brewers. I kept fouling off like a 91 miles an hour fastball right in the middle, and so I've been working on kind of getting the ball out front on the fastball and more of attack. Attack mentality. When you say that you're missing the fastball was that the previous swing mechanics or currently Uh, currently, um, I don't know whether it was fatigue or not, but I was just kind of, you know, late on the heater and and not really, you know, found it off and hitter's count when I should be driving that that ball in that in those situations, so I kind of made a slight adjustment and still working on it now. You like the way you're playing defensively right now. Oh, yeah, I do. I think you know, I need to get some more balls working my range alarm. Or, um, there's been some question of all questionable balls that I you know, I thought I could have gotten too But I didn't. Um, that's just focus on my part. Um, just focus on focusing in more on each pitch and shortstop Now that I'm you know, currently playing a lot there, So you know, there's always room for improvement, but I'm Please. What I've been doing. What does it just mean to you personally? Did you kind of get this run? I mean, you're almost had a season high and advance. You know, even though you've only played 40 some games here, Yeah, it's really cool. I'm fortunate enough to you know, David has the confidence in me toe put me out there and, you know, let me kind of ride it out and see where it goes. So you know, it's an opportunity. You know, those guys injured right now. I get that, but you know, I'm having fun doing it. And you know, it's been a lifelong dream on to, you know, play shortstop every day in the big leagues, and it's been pretty fun and very fortunate for the opportunity.
