"There is a very significant death from the world of sports or report. Jim Brown, the pro football Hall of Famer, a man many believe to be the greatest football player, maybe one of the greatest athletes of all time, has passed away at the age of 87. He had a very short NFL career. He walked away at the absolute Pinnacle to become an actor. He later took on many social causes, but one of the few athletes, really, to ever leave the game at the Pinnacle. I mean, he was still ascending when he walked away. He's in the obviously the college football Hall of Fame, the pro Hall of Fame. He's also considered one of the greatest lacrosse players of all time, he is dead at the age of 87 years old. Truly, a giant, one of those that played so sparingly that a lot of young people barely know his name. There was a great debate years ago between Jim Brown and Bo Jackson as the greatest athlete of all time. He was that good. He's dead at 87. Let's move on and check in with will in North Carolina. Will. You there? Walt is up next. Hey, Walt. Hey, Paul. Thank you. Hey, I was just looking at the SEC west, obviously it's going to be very competitive again this year. But I was actually looking at the coaches. I mean, there are just a lot of rockstars in the SEC west right now and I was just interested in thinking, obviously, thereby checking, chasing Nick Saban, but out of the rest of them, who would you rank, you know, took a third, fourth as far as rockstar built in the SEC west. Well, I think after Sabrina, I would go with Brian Kelly right now. I think he has a credentials having been a Notre-Dame. First year, we all know what he did at LSU. I think there is some separation between Kirby smart, Nick Saban and Brian Kelly, but not very much air. And then after that, I think it's a pretty healthy debate, who would you take next? Would you go for Jimbo Fisher who has a great past international championship, but a shaky present or a lane kiffin, so I think that's how it would most likely break down. I would kind of agree, I kind of worry about people like Sam Pittman and Zach Barnett, just getting being eclipsed by these rockstars so much. Yeah, well, the problem I think for Pittman is that he's shown a lot of progress for the last year was a disappointment. And arnett is unknown. There's no way you would really be able to say much about him, objectively. Mike leech certainly had a seat at that table. When he was at Mississippi state, but kiffin has the reputation. And so there is therein lines the answer. Hey, thank you very much for the call. Appreciate it very much. Let's check in with David, who is up next. David Gardner ahead. Thanks, Paul. Thanks for taking my call. Thank you. I just want to see having heard much of discussion on your show about the proposed entertainment district going up around Neil and stadium in Knoxville. I wonder about your professional opinion as a reporter. Sportscaster and also just your opinion is a Tennessee alumni. Well, David, the only thing I don't know whether this is, I know it's been proposed. I don't know whether it's going to prove, but I did see something about it yesterday. I think it's pretty exciting. I think it shows where the current state of entertainment and sports lies, I mean, I know that some people will grumble about it, but I think this is where the action is and this is where the future is. Okay. As an alumni from Tennessee, your time there as a student as maybe reporting for the newspaper around. How do you just feel about it as opposed to what you went through then? And what students and the people around Knoxville will be seeing if that entertainment district does happen. Well, I mean, what I try to do is I don't look at anything as an alum because that's not the role I play. I don't go to games as an alum. I've never been to a game at Neil and stadium as anything other than a reporter. So it's a little I'm at a terrible disadvantage to give you that view. I understand there's an argument against it. I've heard from some of my brethren who did go to school there and who lived there and who don't like it. But I happen to think if you're going to stay ahead in intercollegiate athletics, you have to think outside the box. And this is, this is a unique approach. I don't know much about it. I mean, I've read literally a two paragraph article on it. So what I like is the fact that any school, whether it's Tennessee or someone else isn't sitting still, I'm particularly interested in what you think. Well, I'm conflicted, sort of, I think the way you were talking about and as an alarm, what I think about is you can never go home again. There's nothing there that was there when I'm when I was there and that's been a long time. Sure. Everything changes in your past, all the things we see in our youth and all the places we go and things we do, we cherish those things. And after a long time, if we try to go back to them, they're not going to be good. But David, I remember, again, a million years ago, you could stand up on right below as hall and look into the stadium and then see the Smoky Mountains. You can't do that anymore because you can't look into the stadium and you can't see anywhere, but I appreciate what you're saying. And yeah, I think we all have nostalgia, but that's where pictures are for. And you just have to accept that the world is changing and that's why you have young people making those decisions as opposed to grizzled veterans who may have gone there 30 or 40 years ago. I mean, I get it. Matt is up next. Loser Canadian car town calling in. We got 15 started coming back this year. We've got a 5 star quarterback four star quarterback honey are a good one and we said that then our Korean crisis still is there and you're an idiot and maybe you know when the first

"Look at it. I will. I guess he was a man. I guess at the BBC. At the time. Oh yeah. For sure. And he says there was the tornado warning issue from the stevia Birmingham and he said it literally could have took the lives of 77,000 people because there wasn't any way of getting the word to the people at the stadium. And he said the tornado literally comes right over the state, the developing tornado came over the stadium. But it later formed into a big tornado just a couple of miles later, which hit the eastern part of the state. And yeah, no, I'll definitely check that out. Hey, thank you so much, Chris. What are memory? And so what 40 almost 40 years ago? And I remember I remember the PA announcer Simpson pepper making that announcement. We'll take a short break. We are live in Nashville, continuing with your phone calls, more guests, including Christians, from Mississippi state. He'll join us right here. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. Wednesday of the SEC tournament where Bridgestone in Nashville. And we're really happy to be rejoined by Christians, the head basketball coach of mister state and coach. We said something as I saw you and it's eerie to think about the last time I saw you, we were in starkville in October. You were about to start the season and you followed Mike leech on our set. Yeah, as I was walking up to the set, that's what I was thinking about, that my only interview that I've had with the famous Paul finebaum was in starkville and that fall day and I remember telling you before we went on air like, hey, I'd rather not follow coach leech anymore. He's a tough act to follow with how good of interview he is and how funny he is and we

"On Saturday, what else Indiana beating Illinois? I gave you 37 and a half. And he hit 38. I noticed that. 38 and a really good win. If you listen to the Saturday pod obviously, we're talking in real time. Good job on Indiana to come back and get that win. Another impressive win and I know IU fans are familiar with this. Big tan fans familiar with this, but if you're just, if you're not checking in every single day, just a reminder, Xavier Johnson is the team's third best player and their lead guard. He is still out. And in theory, if he can come back and be effective, you are looking at a very, very viable second weekend team. So continued good signs for IU there. Anything else from Saturn that I think is worth pointing out here. I'm scrolling through it, because you know what? You mentioned off the top. There wasn't a ton of upsets. There wasn't a ton of off script stuff. I do want to note the powerful scene as expected at Chrysler, Michigan got the win 84 72. I'm going to paraphrase izzo here as well. I think he said something to the effect of if ever I wish I had the power to win one game ever, it was this one for our community and for those people here has allowed and clear, but he's done way above and beyond and it was a really really as expected emotional scene, but something I did appreciate was how all of that was the continual backdrop throughout the game. But jeez, the game had a lot of urgency to it. And Michigan really composed itself and it's got so much work to do from an at large resume perspective, GP. But it did win by 12. It got a very, very important one and in doing so would split the season series with Sparta. That was really sweet. You know, I've seen the video in the pictures. They turned it green. And it was just a really sweet moment. I don't know if you saw the tweet from the Michigan State Athletic director earlier, but he was like, I just want to thank Michigan. For doing, again, I'm paraphrasing. But for doing what you did this weekend, we are rivals in sports, but our humanity overruns any of. Any of the places where our colors separate us. It was just like, those are two big time. And we've seen, we've seen this in college sports. Now multiple times under awful circumstances over the past few months. After Mike leitch died, the Mississippi coach, almost literally put Mississippi state stuff on its uniform on its helmet when it played its bowl game. And those two very bitter, I mean bitter rivals. Really came together. Like obviously based on where I live, my wife's a old miscreant, my brother in law and sister in law or Mississippi. We're surrounded by this stuff and those two schools don't like each other. And almost fans, I think we're genuinely rooting from a sense to be stayed in their bowl game. And lane kiffin went to Mike leeches funeral. And they really showed, hey, we can come together in this moment. We don't like your football team and you don't like our football team, but this is bigger than that. And same thing for Michigan and Michigan state this weekend. I thought it was terrific. It really, I don't know. I thought it was awesome. I thought it was an awesome thing. I agree. A couple more leftovers from Saturday. I will note we have, I don't know if we poke fun at vandy, but whatever. Vanity's one 5 in a row. And it beat auburn. I think auburn fans were filling up more than half of that joint and they really made the trip up to Nashville. You don't really need many excuses to make that trip. But the point is, the jungle traveled and it just don't say it didn't matter. It was a close game, but Vanderbilt has quietly won 5 in a row. And you know a month ago, I think there was just curiosity like is not that stackhouse was like in grave jeopardy. But I was like, well, this continued to a 5th season or not. Well, you look up and they've turned into a factor there. Auburn remains a roving target in the dark and has won two games since January 25th. Those games at home against Georgia at home against Missouri, now they destroyed Missouri less than a week ago, but just don't really know much. Rutgers did get a good win by one. Real quick on that. Auburn has one win over a top 40 Ken pom team all season. And it was shorthanded Arkansas. They really haven't done much. I haven't even looked. Oh, look at this real quick. I feel like they beat northwestern. Hold on. I feel like palms got them like on the night. 21. I mean, I don't know where palm. The point I was saying, they're 21st to kin bomb. They have strong computer numbers. But not a very strong resume. Again, one win over top 40 Ken pump team all season and that win was over a shorthanded Arkansas team. And on Vanderbilt while you're looking that up. Jerry steakhouse coaching the G league before he coached at vandy and had a great reputation. He worked in the grizzlies organization. And had a great reputation. And it obviously has not gone well at Vanderbilt, but I don't know if you've heard the same stuff, but when I talk to coaches about Jerry stackhouse, they do not goof on him. The way they goof on some other coaches who aren't having success. All I've ever heard from other coaches is that Jerry stackhouse is really good. It just hasn't, the win law stuff hasn't been right. But he is respected in the coaching community. Like, I hear good stuff about Jerry steakhouse. And it now looks like some of that is starting to show itself. Vanderbilt's still not going to make the incidentally tournament. I mean, there's still just 15 and 12. Let's calm down a little bit. But they are playing well lately. You know, like you said, 5 game winning streak, victories over almost Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina auburn. He seems to have this team headed in the right direction. And now we'll see, assuming he's back next season, I think that's a reasonable assumption. We'll see if we can get the program headed in the right direction. That direction being toward the NCAA tournament. All right. I'm not going to let myself get out of here without being rightfully ribbed over Nebraska, but before we get to that, I did bring up palms bracket and this is going into the weekend. So he did have auburn on the 9 line that'll drop it. How about this? Nevada was on the line lost. Oklahoma state on the 9 line lost. Iowa got drugged by northwestern, which northwestern. Again, love to just barrel into this thing. Break down the double doors. Extremely impressive to continue this kind of momentum. Iowa, though, lost. NC state gets the dub pit 8 line lost. Memphis, 9 line, lost auburn 9 9 lost Michigan state 8 line loss.

It was to be a big game between two of the NFL's best teams, but in the first quarter, the outcome of a football game seemed awfully insignificant buffalo safety demar Hamlin made a tackle that up for a couple of seconds and then fell backwards and it was clear this was not a normal injury. He had gone into cardiac arrest, received CPR and oxygen they were able to have his heart beat restored but Hamlin is now in a Cincinnati hospital in critical condition. At one point there was talk of resuming the game, but that did not last, although it wasn't an hour and a half before the game was officially postponed. I did go over some college teams. I did talk about who had a chance to make the playoffs. Who didn't really have a chance. Or who was close to chance in watson one of those teams like it could happen and they were the ones. I said that possibly that could be catch. You know i said. "Me on Instagram, too. If you heard me talking earlier about the collaboration I did with the Chicago White Sox for a video about the Negro leagues. It's on my instagram. You could check it out for yourself. Very proud of it. Because I wrote it along with narrating sometimes cause I'm a radio guy like Hey, could you just read this? Do your best radio guy voice, but they were like, Hey, why don't you write something? Like I haven't written anything like this in a minute. So I'm really proud of it. I'd love for you to check it out at Lawrence W. Holmes. It's in my Twitter timeline, and it's on my instagram page. If you would like to check it out. I just finished having a conversation with Nancy Armor of USA Today, which was great. I promised you get to your phone calls in just a minute. But I just wanted to point out that one of the things that urban Meyer is going to run into now that he is no longer a college coach. He's going to run into a media, which is mostly not scared of him. Now I might be a little bit different because it is Jacksonville. It's one of the smaller markets. In the NFL. And it doesn't necessarily have a tradition. Of covering. Football. The way that other cities do, like Philadelphia and New York and Chicago and Los Angeles. But The difference. Is in college towns and this goes on across the nation. The coach of the college team. If you're a success if your winner Even if if you're not a winner. Like I can't imagine that. That the local media in Mississippi is his holding mike leeches feet to the fire for things that, he says, for example. Because of the impact it has on The economy of the city that or town that the college program is in and the whole concept of pride and state pride and There's this feeling that the coach can do no wrong and that the coach should not be questioned because the coaches brought championships. There is an element of that. Uncovering the NFL. And I will tell you from covering an NFL team. There was a point where I had a head coach say to me. You're either with us or you're against us. That was their way to try and get softer coverage. Was to say, if you're not with us, then you're actively rooting against us in the job is to not Which cover the team is if you're not rooting for anybody Now. You be fair and to be truthful. If you work in a market Whatever market you're in, if you're covering a sports team It is better for your publication. It is better for your television station. It's better for your radio station. If the team that you cover wind, But that doesn't mean that you have to then give up your objectivity. Or your objectivity is a little bit of your you trying to be fair. It shouldn't be hindered. By the fact that the team winning is better for everyone involved and in college towns. That guy gets to be the man. He gets to set the agenda. And in a lot of ways he gets to set the agenda for the media. Here. The stories that you're going to talk about here, the players that you cannot talk to you. College coaches in basketball and football. Do some of this college basketball coaches or not is bad. About it as College football coaches, But there have been plenty of college basketball coaches that have AH rule and I'm using air quotes. You can't see me but have a rule about not allowing freshman to talk, for example. There a lot of college coaches, you don't allow their coordinators to talk. It's stuff like that, where urban is going to have to figure out that the stakes are higher. And he's dealing with adults like there's not student media like students that are trying to learn how to do the job, and I don't have to worry about the fear of repercussions on campus or from the athletic department. These are things that go on across the country. And I know that there's probably like some student journalists right now. He's listening. Like Yep. There's pressure that is put on for favorable coverage. Around the country in a bunch of these college towns. It's going to be harder for urban who hasn't done anything at the NFL level. You. Work through some of this and Jimmy that advice and Jimmy Johnson gave him is right. It is different. It's very different the way that he's gonna have to go about this job. Then the way that he one about the job, Utah or the way that he went about the job at Ohio State. Go up to Green Bay and talk with David. Hey, David, you're on CBS Sports radio. A large Maura Hardy, Sir, I'm doing well, What's on your mind? I love your show. Love your show. You bring up a great topic. So what people talk? I'm going all the way back to the beginning of the shelf. You could quit that they love the injury with the weather. You know, I hate the love the guy, but I do love to hate him as well. Yeah, So the whole bunch of stuff and you know, in the hope the whole thing with that night that game last week I own the Packer lost a few weeks back, and I own my pick against him last Sunday. But Tom Brady is the golden child. I mean, if you really look at it, and you make comparisons like it mentioned up the reference The Shawshank Redemption. And and you do, Frank. The only thing about any of your friends. You got rude from the beginning. He didn't belong where he ended up. Tom Brady walked into a unbelievable opportunity. Take another Super Bowl away with Seattle game. Nah, man, we're not. We're not gonna take away Super Bowl! Come on, David. Come on, my love Tom Brady, go. There's the goat. But in 20 years time, you got to give credit to you often that a look at the other side of it. And you know, he walked into a game last week that if everybody doesn't think that the Tampa Bay defense won that game Because nobody had done to Patrick the homes in Kansas City in the homes time there, then what campus deep that did to that offense. It's team. Tom was great. Don't get me wrong. He's made plays. But the difference in that game was that that Kansas City offense was just not And other than that. I'll cut it to him 77 titles. She's got it. You know, you didn't mention no. Well, wait, wait, wait, I gotta go. I gotta cut you off because we got some other things we need to do. But I do appreciate you being a loyalist there. It's clear that you've been listening. Since the beginning of the show. I've been really impressed with the phone callers. We've been doing this now, seven weeks very impressed with the callers that I've gotten out of Wisconsin. Like overall it's been Pretty good, and I appreciate that. I do want to talk about what you said, because there is some numbers to back up what you were talking about. And and you're right about the defense. There's a number one particular statistic that you may not have heard this week about what happened to Patrick Mahomes last week that I want to share with you. We will do that. And I want to talk to you. Could you talk about urban Meyer and the NFL and your team's mistakes of drafting 855 to 1 to 4 to 27855 to 1 to 4? CBS? We will do all of that. Well, wait, wait, wait, I gotta go. I gotta cut you all day because we got some other things we need to do. But I do appreciate you being a loyalist there, and it's clear to you been listening since the beginning of the show. I've been really impressed with the phone callers. We've been doing this now, seven weeks very impressed with the collars that I've gotten out of Wisconsin like overall it's been Pretty good, and I appreciate that. I do want to talk about what you said, because there's numbers to back up what you were talking about. And and you're right about the defense. There's a number one particular statistic that you may not have heard this week about what happened to Patrick Mahomes last week that I want to share with you. We will do that, and I want to talk to you. Could you talk about urban Meyer and the NFL and your team's mistakes of drafting? 855 to 1 to 4 to 27855 to 1 to 4, CBS. We will do all of that after the latest CBS Sports Radio Update with Kevin Dexter. See me? Yes. One sports flag. All right..

"With the Chicago White Sox for a video about the Negro leagues. I just finished having a conversation with Nancy Armor of U. S A today which was great. I can't imagine that. That the local media in Mississippi is his holding mike leeches feet to the fire for things that, he says, for example. Because of the impact that it has on The economy of the city that or town that the college program is in and the whole concept of pride and state pride and There's this feeling that the coach can do no wrong and that the coach should not be questioned because the coaches brought championships. There is an element of that. Uncovering the NFL. And I will tell you from covering an NFL team. There was a point where I had a head coach say to me. You're either with us or you're against us. That was their way to try and get softer coverage. Was to say, if you're not with us, then you're actively rooting against us, and the job is to not Did you cover the team is if you're not rooting for anybody. Now. You be fair and to be truthful. If you work in a market Whatever market you're in, if you're covering a sports team It is better for your publication. It is better for your television station. It's better for your radio station. If the team that you cover wins, But that doesn't mean that you have to then give up your objectivity. Or your objectivity is a little bit of your huge trying to be fair. And he's dealing with adults like there's not student media like students that are trying to learn how to do the job, and I don't have to worry about the fear of repercussions. On campus or from the athletic department. These are things that go on across the country. And I know that there's probably like some student journalists right now. He's listening. Like Yep. There's pressure that is put on for favorable coverage. Around the country in a bunch of these college towns. It's going to be harder for urban who hasn't done anything at the NFL level. You. Work through some of this in Jimmy. That advice and Jimmy Johnson gave him is right. It is different. It's very different the way that he's gonna have to go about this job. Then the way that he went about the job, Utah or the way that he went about the job at Ohio State. Go up to Green Bay and talk with David. Hey, David, you're on CBS Sports radio. A large moron. How are you? I'm doing well, What's on your mind? I love your show. Love your show. You bring up a great topic. So what people talk? I'm going all the way back to the beginning of the shelf. Just a quick update Love the intro with the weather. Getting done running out the morning Hartzell here 11 below zero and Green Day 30 minus On the windshield. Yeah, that's Midwesterners. We know it. You brought up Tom Brady early. You know, I hate the love the guy, but I do love to hate him as well. Um yeah, so the whole bunch of stuff and you know, in the whole the whole thing with that night that game last week I own the Packer lost a few weeks back, and although my pick against them last Sunday But Tom Brady is the golden child. I mean, if you really look at it, and you make comparisons like they had mentioned the reference The Shawshank Redemption. And Andy. Did Frank know anything about any of your friends? You got rude from the beginning. He didn't belong where he ended up. Tom Brady walked into a unbelievable opportunity. And over time, you know you Green Bay Packer Hall of Famer. Coming in Charles Woodson and the snow ball game. Adam Sanitary one that won the Super Bowl and one another one form. Take another Super Bowl away with Seattle game. No, man, we're not. We're not gonna take away Super Bowl! Come on, David, my love Tom Brady, go. It is the goat. But in 20 years time you got to give credit to you offer that I look at the other side of it. And you know, he walked into a game last week that if everybody doesn't think that the Tampa Bay defense won that game Because nobody had done to pack it in the homes in Kansas City in the homes time there, then what campus deep that did to that often to see him. Tom was great. Don't get me wrong. He needs a place. But the difference in that game was that Kansas City offense was just not And other than that. I'll cut it to him 77 titles. You got it. You know, you didn't mention no. Well, wait, wait, wait, I gotta go. I gotta cut you off because we got some other things we need to do. But I do appreciate you being a loyalist there. It's clear to you been listening since the beginning of the show. I've been really impressed with the phone callers..
