"Good afternoon, I'm Hillary Howard. And I'm Sean Anderson, Mike Jacques is our producer. Our top story Jack to share a 21 year old Massachusetts air national guardsman is being held without bond after appearing in Boston federal court. He's charged with unlawfully accessing and leaking highly classified pendrick Pentagon documents to share a was assigned to the IT team at the Otis Air National Guard base on Cape Cod. WTO P national security correspondent JJ green joins us live with more on this case, JJ. Hillary Jack to share appeared in court today, as you said, to face two charges under the espionage act for taking classified national defense information and leaking it. He was ordered held without bond his next court appearance is next Wednesday. He did not enter a plea today to sheer allegedly took classified intelligence out of a facility to his home, printed it and posted it on a gaming chat site online. He was assigned to Otis Air National Guard base on Cape Cod in 2021. He was given a top secret SCI security clearance. His job was basically to be an information technician, meaning he was supposed to make sure that the computers and the systems and the cables they operated on were functioning as they should. Reporting live, JJ green, WTO news. JJ, what do we know about the sheriff's understanding of what he allegedly was doing and do these court documents shed any light on that? The documents seem to indicate that he was aware of what he was doing. And a part of the reason why that is put in that particular context late in the process here, meaning a couple of few days ago, actually, he went on a government computer at his work, and then began to search for the term leaked in classified documents suggesting that he knew that this was a problem. And there was some reporting early on in some of The Washington Post and New York Times reporting earlier in the week that indicated he had told some of the people that he engaged with on this site that he was concerned that he had messed up, made a mistake, and these documents were going to get him in trouble. So that's precisely what these charging documents suggest that he knew he was in trouble and was looking to see if it had made it to the eyes of the government at that time. This was a few days ago. All right, JJ, thank you so much. You're welcome. WTO national security correspondent JJ green. Meantime, a high profile member of Congress is coming under fire from other lawmakers for defending the suspect charged in the league. Mitchell Miller today on the hill. Georgia Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has tweeted that Jack techera is white, male, Christian, and anti war, and told the truth about troops on the ground in Ukraine. Virginia democratic congressman Don beyer says green is suggesting it's okay to commit crimes and betray American national security as long as you're a white Christian man. Green who's a member of the Homeland Security committee has doubled down on earlier comments saying today that some see jacked to Shira is a hero. But most lawmakers want him punished and to get to the bottom of how he was able to leak such sensitive material. On Capitol Hill, Mitchell Miller WTO be news. "Weather. The WTO producers desk. His wired by IBW local 26, where electrical contractors come to grow. Good afternoon, I'm Sean Anderson. I'm Hillary Howard, Mike Jacques is our producer. Less than a week after a mysterious balloon from China was shot down off the east coast, another has been taken out of the sky in Alaska. This was different and there are a lot more questions that need to be answered. Let's get the latest with WTO P national security correspondent JJ green. The first one was the size of an airplane. This one, the size of a small car. It showed up last night. North American aerospace defense command detected an object on ground radar. Pentagon press secretary, Brigadier general pat Ryder says it was determined it was another high altitude airborne object, and it was confirmed by two more fighter jets today, and then the decision was made to shoot it down. The aircraft that took down the object was an F-22. Ryder said it was not known where it came from, what its purpose was, or where it was going. And while I won't go into specifics due to classification reasons, I can say that we have located a significant amount of debris so far. And he confirmed that the reason it was taken down was that it was flying at approximately 40,000 feet and was a reasonable threat to civilian aviation or passenger planes, reporting live, JJ green, WTO news. JJ, a couple other questions here. Where are where is the debris and what is the military doing with it? It's off the northeastern coast, at least this is what we're being told right now about this off the northeastern coast of Alaska. And it's being collected by military helicopters. There are several different airframes that are collecting it. But what I gather is that this is much smaller and much easier to find and I'm not clear about the state of the debris when it impacted the water or if it sunk, but there have been some thoughts and reports at least suggesting that it did not sink. So it may be a little bit easier to collect than the other, but that's what we've heard off the northeastern part of Alaska and it's in the water and perhaps floating on top. Thanks so much, JJ. You're welcome. WTO P national security correspondent JJ green. Our other big story is the FBI discovering an additional classified document at former vice president Mike Pence's Indiana home. This was described as a consensual search of the Pence family home, not a raid, and negotiated with Justice Department. Pence adviser Devin O'Malley says during the 5 hour search, one document that was marked classified and 6 other pages without markings were removed by the FBI. Mike Pence is attorney requested a review of records stored at his home after the uproar over the discovery of classified documents, found it former presidents, Trump and Biden's personal residences. Some Pence documents were discovered in January, and now these additional pages have been found. Pence and his wife are away in California, he had said in earlier remarks that mistakes were made and he takes full responsibility. I'm Jackie Quinn. By 34 now to turkey and Syria, more than 23,000 people are now confirmed dead from Monday's 7.8 magnitude quake and chances are dwindling by the hour of finding any more survivors in the rubble. The United Nations warns hundreds of thousands in those two countries are in urgent need of hot meals, and many are displaced with no shelter from the winter weather. Nearly 300,000 of the displaced are in Syria, where aid has not gotten to a lot of folks. Aid is getting through but only slowly and it's just starting to U.S. search and rescue teams have recently arrived. The first UN convoy did make it into Syria via the Turkish border, but we know the hurdles for aid workers are immense, whether that is by land by air or by sea. And that's because the roads and bridges have been damaged. Runways at airports have been split and containers at ports have been toppled and to be as correspondent Raimi reporting from London. Here at home, a man is recovering after being shot by a D.C. police officer in southeast today. It happened in the area of 13th street in good hope roads, as police investigate their hoping to track down a key witness. The man who was shot was in the passenger seat of a parked Jeep. D.C. police chief Robert county says an officer shot the man after the two got into some kind of an altercation. "And I'm Sean Anderson, Mike Jacques is our producer. Cop story we're following tonight the latest round of military assistance coming to Ukraine. The U.S. and Germany say today they will send advanced battle tanks to Ukraine. They will help keep breakthrough the combat stalemate in the war with Russia. Just last week, the U.S. was reluctant to send the sophisticated M1 tanks national security correspondent JJ green explains the turnaround. This appears to be what led to the change. We assessed that Ukraine will need a combination of armored personnel carriers, infantry fighting vehicles and tanks to be successful on the battlefield in the coming months and even years. Brigadier general pat Ryder, spokesman for The Pentagon. So the logic is Ukraine needs tanks now. Germany and Europe can provide those tanks. The U.S. tanks, which will take longer to get to them, will be provided for fighting in the future. And what we'll do is we'll use that time to help train Ukrainians as well as work with them on building the logistics maintenance and sustainment infrastructure that will be required. In other words, this war won't be over soon and those tanks will come in handy WTO national security correspondent JJ green. New tonight, we're learning more about what took place inside a Montgomery county high school more than a year ago when a student was shot in a bathroom. In a new addition to its after action report, the school system is revealing new information it's learned about the missteps that happened during the response to the shooting of a 15 year old at magruder high school. This includes uncertainty on the day of the shooting about who was in charge police for school officials and also some breaks and proper lockdown procedures such as teachers leaving classrooms and even a responding school system staffer entering the building during a lockdown. We also learned that in the classroom where the shooter Steven Olsen junior was before his arrest, that students were dismissed when a bell rang, even though they shouldn't have been. We also learned about the lifesaving actions of a school nurse that day that used to stop the bleed kit to help the student who was shot, and also there was no cell phone reception in that bathroom, so that lifesaving information from dispatchers was relayed by other staff members through walkie talkies. The school system says it's taken a number of actions to address the findings already, the shooter Steven alston junior is serving time for the crime, Mike Morello, WTO news. To the latest development in the case of the Newport News Virginia teacher recently shot by one of her 6 year old students, we are getting word that teacher is suing that school district saying the administration did not protect its people. This is outrageous. Richneck elementary school teacher Abigail's Warner's attorney, Diane toscano says the school administration was warned three times by staff on the day of the shooting that the 6 year old student could be armed. Given the opportunity to call the police over a report of a potentially armed student, the school administrator failed to act and protect the school. School superintendent George Parker the third has said at least one administrator was told the boy may have a weapon, but nothing was found in his backpack. Police say they were unaware staff expressed concerns that day. Toscano says the 25 year old teacher is healing from serious injuries after being shot through her hand and in her chest. Some local leaders are taking action to prevent something like that from happening again. One Republican delegate enrichment says she's working on legislation to address discipline in schools, giving teachers more support. Prince William county leaders are considering adding safety measures to protect kids and teachers. It's considering weapons screening technology for anyone entering a school. We've also been reporting in recent days on the introduction of two democratic backed bills in the House and Senate. They would require that gun owners lock up guns when kids are around. Breaking news tonight here on WTO is we have former president Trump's ban from Facebook and Instagram coming to an end. Parent company met us as the accounts will be restored in the coming weeks, but they will be subjected to stricter content moderation. The former president's accounts were suspended the day after the capitol riot January 6th, 2021, meta says there will be stricter penalties for the former president if he posts anything that violates standards that also says it might restrict certain content that doesn't necessarily violate standards, but does, for example, delegitimize elections. Preliminary autopsy findings for Tyree Nichols are being released. They're coming two weeks after the black man died following a confrontation with Memphis police. The findings suggest Nichols suffered extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating. The autopsy is being commissioned by lawyers for Nichols family, the full report has not been released. Stay with us here on WTO coming up after traffic and weather. The new House speaker sends some Democrats packing from the intelligence committee. It's purely political vengeance. The top stories we're following for you today, the US Treasury is now using extraordinary measures to keep the country from defaulting on its debt. These steps are expected to give a divided Congress a couple more months to work out a debt limit deal. And tonight, we're learning that President Biden has set up a meeting with Republican House speaker Kevin McCarthy to hash out the details. As he warns of a calamity of a debt ceiling deal isn't reached, the president says he looks forward to a conversation with the house GOP on spending and taxes. And they're going to be honest debates. On Twitter, House speaker Kevin McCarthy says he looks forward to the meeting, where he'll bring up, quote, irresponsible government spending. Mister Biden argues Republicans will seek to cut social security and Medicare. It's a charge GOP leader strongly deny. We got to do something about social security. No, but these are the kind of debates we're going to have. Stephen portnoy, CBS News, The White House. Meantime, treasury secretary Janet Yellen is dismissing a potential proposal from House Republicans that details steps the U.S. can take if the government is unable to reach a deal on raising the debt limit. Washington Post reports the contingency plans would call on the Biden administration to make only the most critical payments. However, during a news briefing in Senegal today, Yellen said that any failure to pay a government bill would constitute a debt default. She also says treasury systems were built to, quote, pay all of our bills when they're due and on time and not to prioritize on the form of spending over the other. But the jurors found that it was not properly declared and it was the basis of the tax fraud charges. What about Donald Trump's role in this? Legal analyst Jessica Levinson. It does, I think, matter that the prosecutor said in closing arguments that the former president was aware that he basically blessed the situation, the defense actually asked for, I believe, a mistrial and said, we've got to start all over again. "To grow. Good afternoon, I'm Sean Anderson. I'm Hillary Howard Mike Jacques is our producer. Well, you knew it was going to happen the fed raises interest rates three quarters of a percentage point, it's the 6th hike this year to curb inflation. Business analyst Jill schlesinger says the fed also sent a very important signal. There was something new in the accompanying statement this time around. The fed has acknowledged that there is a lag between the action of raising interest rates and how quickly those higher rates actually impact the economy. This change to the official statement suggests that the Central Bank could pull back on the size of future rate hikes. How is Wall Street responding well, not particularly happy, Dow is down 386 points. NASDAQ downed three O 6, the S&P down 79. More breaking news on WTO, both stories concerning the commanders. Of course, we've been reporting all afternoon that Dan Snyder, the owner of the commanders, is making a move for the potential sale of the team. More on that coming up in just a second, but first, this breaking story, a 17 year old boy has been arrested in connection with the shooting of commanders running back Brian Robinson junior. D.C. police chief Robert Conti announced that arrest during a news conference this hour. "Good morning, I'm Mark Lewis. And I'm Deborah Feinstein, Mike Jacques is our producer. The top story we're following reaction from President Biden this morning to OPEC's decision to cut production by a larger than expected 2 million barrels a day, starting in November. And we're looking at what the alternatives you may have. Yesterday's decision to reduce oil production is an effort to support sagging oil prices. Analysts say it could harm the struggling global economy and cause an increase in the price at the pump in the weeks before the midterm elections. OPEC's decision could also help Russia, which is a member of the cartel to deal with an anticipated ban by European nations on most Russian oil. The president today said it remains to be seen if you'll meet with Russian president Putin at the G 20 summit in November. Well, it's happened again, migrants sent by bus were dropped off this morning outside the vice president's home in northwest D.C.. The more than two dozen migrants from Venezuela and Ecuador came from Texas. More than 3000 have arrived here in D.C. in recent months, aid groups are helping them mayor Bowser is requested help from the National Guard to respond to the migrant crisis, but she's been rejected by The Pentagon twice. The D.C. National Guard is controlled by the president, unlike National Guard units and states and territories, which are controlled by governors. New developments affecting the Obama era policy that prevents the deportation of hundreds of thousands of immigrants, brought to the U.S. as children. The future of DACA, the deferred action for childhood arrivals program is now up in the air after a ruling by a federal appeals court. The Biden administration is still not allowed to approve any new DACA applications. However, the decision by the court leaves some of that program intact. The appeals court decided to leave the program in place for current recipients or about nearly 600,000 immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children who do not have legal status who are currently enrolled in DACA. Galvez reporting, a federal court in Texas ruled last year that former president Obama's executive order violated federal law in part because the administration did not seek public comment. To Florida now, where residents are dealing with tainted water power outages, destroyed homes and the loss of loved ones after hurricane Ian lashed the state more than a week ago. Some of those hardest hit are in Fort Myers in southwestern Florida. That's where we find WTO's Melissa Howell. You can see that this is a wasteland. Walking

"To grow. Good afternoon, I'm Sean Anderson. I'm Hillary Howard, Mike Jacques is our producer. Big news from the fed. CBS News special report, the Federal Reserve has raised a key interest rate by three quarters of a percentage point. The third time in a row the fed has ramped up interest rates. CBS News business analyst Jill schlesinger says it's all about keeping prices under control. The issue with the fed is inflation. Food is running at 11.4% higher than it was a year ago. Shelter is increasing. And while gas prices are down, the price for so many other things continues to rise. Akiko fujita and anchor and reporter for Yahoo finance with what this rate hike will mean for you. The loans are going to go higher. We've seen mortgage rates at sea more than 6%. So things are going to get a lot more expensive, bottom line. Stocks sang amid the fed's announcement. CBS News special report, I'm Linda kenyon. More on this as we go through the day here on WTO. Another major story this afternoon, former president Trump is being sued for business fraud by New York's attorney general. The suit names Donald Trump and his three adult children as defendants. We show that they violated several state criminal laws. Attorney general letitia James says they falsely stated Trump's net worth from real estate holdings by billions of dollars. She's also referring the charges to federal prosecutors and the IRS. We believe the conduct alleged in this action also violates federal criminal law, including issuing false statements to financial institutions and bank fraud. Trump's attorney calls the charges political CBS correspondent kami McCormick will go in depth on the suit with CBS legal analyst thane Rosenbaum at two 40. "Years Good afternoon I'm Sean Anderson I'm Hillary Howard and Mike Jacques is our producer Now to our top story this afternoon you will have a chance to hear firsthand from the House select committee investigating the January 6th insurrection tonight That's when the committee holds its first public hearing during prime time CBS News congressional correspondent Scott mcfarlane says lawmakers will do more than just review their findings They say they want to show their work from their investigation to inform legislation They plan to propose and try to get through the U.S. House in Congress Legislation that could change how electoral votes are counted on future January 6s to avoid another recurrence of a capital attack Mcfarlane also says the committee plans to share some new evidence that has never been seen by the public You can hear live comprehensive coverage of tonight's hearings right here on WTO and the entire thing will be streamed live at WTO P dot com starting at 8 o'clock tonight Three 32 announced a Ukraine today that nation's defense ministry is saying that forces had reclaimed some of the territory lost in the southern region after launching a successful counter attack against Russian forces around hurson WTO national security correspondent JJ green joins us live with an update on the fighting JJ Well Sean according to Ukrainian intelligence Russian forces continue to storm Ukrainian positions in several rodents Russian forces they say have also carried out rocket and shelling attacks and reconnaissance operations in the mikolaja region and they're expected to intensify operations in the all important curse on region that you mentioned This is in response to recent Ukrainian counter attacks In addition to what they seem to be trying to do they're also trying to solidify control over several major highways And we're hearing from Ukrainian intelligence today that Russian forces are escalating the use of psychological and information operations They're trying to damage them morale of Ukrainian soldiers The news isn't good today in eastern Ukraine but like they did when the war started Ukrainian forces continue to fight back Reporting live JJ green WTO P news JJ three foreign nationals are now facing the death penalty for fighting with Ukraine against Russia What do you know about that Yeah one of them is a Moroccan citizen who moved to Ukraine a few years ago studied their fell in love with the country and then volunteered for the marines later signing a contract with the armed forces there and after the February 24th invasion he went to the front lines where he participated in the defense of mariupol It was there where he as well as two British volunteers were taken prisoner They were trying today and sentenced to be shot Britain says it's obviously deeply concerned by this sentencing of its two citizens haven't heard anything from Morocco yet a spokesman for British prime minister Boris Johnson says under the Geneva convention prisoners of war are entitled to combatant immunity and they should not be prosecuted for participation in hostilities but based on what Russia is done it's not clear they will honor that regulation JJ thanks You're welcome WTO's JJ green Three 35 in other news getting a new stadium has become a much taller order for the Washington commanders The Virginia General Assembly is tabling legislation designed to lure the team to the Commonwealth state senator Jeremy mcpike is a Democrat from Prince William county This year it's dead The patrons have confirmed this morning as you saw that it's off the table That conference report the final bill is not going to be voted on at all So it's dead for the year We'll see what happens next year That's my hope that they step up have some more details and tell us how they're going to finance it I think this is sort of muddy the waters in terms of how the state would participate in any form whatsoever And democratic Senate majority leader dick saslaw fairfax county says there are too many issues to be resolved in controversy surrounding the team for a bill to move forward And the team got more bad news from the district most D.C. council members say they will not support construction of a new commander stadium around RFK In a letter to D.C. delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton the council members say a football stadium is a poor use of tax dollars and that they'd rather see the money used for things like affordable housing and green spaces and recent comments by commander's defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio which downplayed January 6th were also mentioned These developments in the district and Virginia leave the teen with just one viable site for now and that is the current stadium in landover Up ahead on WTO will get you in the latest on your forecast and then more gun legislation moves through the house Three.

"Anderson Mike Jacques is our producer and here on WTO Our top story is the massive stock market sell off CBS News special report a one 80 on Wall Street today stocks tumbled erasing yesterday's big rally over the fed's interest rate height news The Dow lost 1063 points on the day with big investors sell offs CBS business reporter Jason Brooks has details Wall Street is worried that the fed will have to unleash even bigger rate increases than the half percentage point hike this week In order to get a handle on inflation which is at a four decade high The fed has said this is just one of several planned rate hikes this year But experts say what's going on with the markets is normal Analyst art Hogan tells us the market is just correcting Well if you're an everyday American like myself and have a long-term investment time horizon it's likely best to ignore a lot of this volatility I think that if you are the diversified portfolio in your IRA or your 401k you likely don't want to make many changes just because the market's up 2% one day and down 2% another CBS News special report I'm Monica ricks 6 33 in other news today the FDA is limiting who can get Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine because of a rare but serious risk of blood clots The FDA says the shot should only be given to adults who can't get a different vaccine or to adults who specifically request the J&J this decision is the latest restriction to hit that vaccine which has long been overshadowed by the more effective shots from Pfizer and Moderna Congressional Democrats in The White House are scrambling to prepare for the possibility the Supreme Court will overturn roe V wade and newt security is in place at the high court WTO peace Mitchell Miller today on.

"Evening I'm Hillary Howard And I'm Brendan Hazleton Mike Jacques is our producer Among the top stories we're following for you this evening it was a brutal end to a lousy week on Wall Street The day way down which culminated a very bad week in a terrible month Chief economist Diane swank on what's happening Margins are being squeezed by everything from supply chain problems to escalating costs And today we also saw the employment cost index come out at its fastest quarterly pace in over 30 years She expects the fed will move head on into several rate hikes starting next month This could be the most rapid rise in interest expense and tightening of credit conditions that we've seen since the 1980s as we move into this period And the spheres and reality that we could actually end up in a recession are starting to shut in At the close the Dow plummeted over 900 points the S&P 500 down 3.6% the NASDAQ wrapped up April with its biggest monthly loss since 2008 CBS News special report I'm Stacy Lynn Meantime House speaker Nancy Pelosi in other news says it's critical for Congress to move quickly to pass the president's massive aid package for Ukraine More on that from Capitol Hill in WTO's Mitchell Miller This is historic Speaker Pelosi referring to the $33 billion in aid for Ukraine which includes $20 billion for military assistance She says lawmakers are already working on the legislation But there could be complications in the Senate where Republicans want a vote related to title 42 and the president's plan to drop the policy which allows for the rapid rejection of migrants at the southern border There's also not total agreement on new COVID funding which Pelosi is pushing for We need the Ukraine money We need the COVID money So this is called legislating and we'll have to come to terms on how we do that On Capitol Hill Mitchell Miller WTO P news Also today Russian missiles rocked Ukraine's capital city of Kyiv that was actually last night in a text could be happening inside of Russia More on that from WTO P national security correspondent JJ green Border attacks are taking place in multiple locations along the border with Ukraine Russia's border with the Ukraine and what we're hearing is that these attacks are coming from inside Ukraine Ukraine is not going to say they did it That's not what they do But they have said though that this is something you should expect in a war like this Russia recognizes now there have been 11 attacks since February 24th when this war started And the tempo of these attacks seemed to be picking up Again that's WTO national security correspondent JJ green 6 35.
