"Avril Insider Weekly Look inside the National Football League. Is your host, Scott Graham. We've already learned what we already knew. Nothing in 2020 is what we're used to. Well, except the Chiefs and Russell Wilson. Okay, maybe DeAndre Hopkins, But even many of the mainstays of our shared NFL experience have a different nuance this season. We'll talk with Patriotsrunning back in Super Bowl 51 hero James White, a chat with an old friend as Mike Holmgren stops by and a pair of Hall of Famers Jim Covert and our own Terrell Davis. And it all starts right now. Okay. 2020 will likely be one of the more memorable years of all of our lifetimes. But what would the NFL season look like in the middle of our new and unwelcome normal? Well, actually coming in a week two. It looks pretty normal, with some teams scrambling to avoid the dreaded on to start and others showing the optimism that September will always bring to a football season case in point. The Arizona Cardinals, who walked into Santa Clara last week and walked out with a season opening win against the defending NFC champion Niners card, said coach Cliff Kingsbury. Sounds confident but not yet giddy. Yeah, I think we've addressed that throughout all season way. Know what we've been around here? We know what's been said about us around here for the last few years, and so With our leadership in that locker. I don't expect anybody to start celebrating anything at this point, so I don't expect that to be an issue and then it's just all about continue to work hard and we're big on each day you showed to the facility. You try to get better in every phase, and that's what we're trying to do or not. Mark it out long term goals. Anything of that nature. It's when we show we're gonna grind, get better, and you know those things will take care of themselves. Arizona host another surprise winner in week one, the Washington football team. New England as a chance to start to a No. But they'll have to do it in Seattle against the Seahawks on Sunday night football here on Westwood. One good news for the Patriots. The twelves won't be feeling the building The bad news. I have to find a way to slow down Russell Wilson, who was masterful in week one. In fact, Bill Belichick says Russell was masterful all the time he could do everything's got obviously great leadership. Playmaking skills. He plays very well in the most critical situations in the game was decision making. Is passing numbers are extraordinary. You put him up against anybody since he's been in the league, literally anybody in almost any category in any category, really? You know, his winning percentage is impressive. He's there for every game, never missed a game. Honestly, I think he's you know, in a way, maybe underrated by by the media or the fans. I don't know, but I mean, I really see anybody better than this player. Ballistics old quarterback you remember Tom Brady is trying to find his first win is the Buccaneers host the Panthers. Brady experienced a loss in week one and then Ah, less than glowing assessment about his performance from his head coach, Bruce Arians. Yeah. I mean, he looked like Tom Brady and practice all the time. So it's kind of unusual to see that in the ballgame because they didn't do the things that we didn't get ready for everything they did. We were We thought we were ready for it. From wide receivers have do a better job of winning one on one when he decided to go their way and you can't say that we're all sing because we started out because you could start out going right down the field, you know, so I think it's a great learning experience. It's just round one of Ah 16 round fight and and we'll we'll learn from it. Quarterbacks have to adjust even the best, which is why the league should be concerned that Patrick Mahomes is learning the lesson of restraint. Yeah, I think it was funny. Chad and Matt both boasted of one my best games I played because they said, I actually took the check downs and then just try to force it down the field when it wasn't there. And so it's time that I have learned from those veteran guys have learned from coach Reid is I mean, we're all of us Want to go for the big shot? All of us want to go for the touchdown pass every single time. But if the defense is going to play us back, and they're gonna play us and coverage, I will take the stuff underneath and let the guys make plays and and find ways to score to score and find ways this the win football games. The chief's longtime rivals officially begin life in their third home city this week. The Las Vegas Raiders opening a Legion stadium on Monday night football here on Westwood one, and Derek Carr appears to have embraced the Viva Las Vegas mentality. Love this city. You moved.

Analytics in the NFL

"Going to talk about these Brown the whole topic of analytics because Mike when you think of mate Alexi often think about major league baseball. And you know Bill James's cyber metric revolution. Should Billy Bean moneyball the book movie all the rest of it and wanted Billy Bean's main guys was Paul D Badescu. CUPID ESTA LA. Believe in the as he goes the mets eventually. Now he's with the Cleveland Browns. Tired and twice sixteen says famously. I don't know too much NFL. But I've got all this information all this analytics we'll make things work also infamous said he didn't think Carson Wentz was the top twenty quarterback now now as we look at your column today. Athletic is always. You can subscribe the athletic read. All Mike's work there the war between analytics and football people is pointless. The real challenge is finding someone who can properly understanding process all the data and then make the right decisions and how to deploy and I'm not sure. The browns have solved that problem yet. They hire Kevin Stansky is their head coach. Why why are you skeptical at? They've solved it. You know I like Kevin and I and I don't mean to be critical Kevin. But I think Kevin's a really smart guy. And I think Kevin's obviously you know well. Educated aided came through the coaching ranks. The right way started on the ground floor worked his way up. I just think it's going to be a real challenging job for him because he's got to manage a lot of personalities in that locker room and deep. Pesto said at the press conference that they were looking for a leader. And you know. And I think that Kevin's probably more of a guy who's low key. Quiet it you know has a shared vision with everybody and that doesn't mean he's not qualified. That just means to me I think the vision of what the browns think they need. And what what. I see the browns needing in terms of somebody to come in and be able to handle Odell Beckham because look like Odell Beckham. The little like Michael Jackson Right. I mean he's is not compliant right he will show up on time. He'll do what he has to do right but the one thing he will do is he will create people following him he will create and so what he doesn't come to. Ot Days where he doesn't want to do things or he wants to go out. Color outside the lines dominic does he. Will you know get the people follow him. And who's going to challenge him to do that. Who's going to challenge him to do that? You know and I thought it was funny. Ad When you know they asked Stefanski Gi you know what did Mayfield think of you like. I'm not really worried. Would Baker Mayfield thinks of me. I'm worried about what I think. Baker Mayfield Shinto like I don't have to make Baker Mayfield Happy Baker Mayfield to make me happy. And I think you can look at all these analytical numbers and it's great but at some point football's a game a leadership. Football's the game of toughness. Football's a game paddle. Football's a game of conditioning. Football's a game of making people do things they really don't WanNa do right. You need intelligence. You need all those things but you need grit. You need some of that and I just think that the way they handle this they obviously got somebody who's more collaborative than dictatorship and. That's what they wanted on it. I'm not sure that's what they needed. As you mentioned the com- analytics is just another word for information. And when you worked for Bill Belichick or walls work with them. You know you were feeding them. Information to quote gridiron genius. The fact you Mike Holmgren were good friends. He called you scooper because you were so tune in and what was going on around the NFL. Hiring coaches like homeroom is a convoluted path to building a staff. It required Walsh to spend lots of time and energy coaching his coaches. That was why he hired guys. Who are intelligent before there? Anything else guys. Were not typical products. The football industry his special teams coach. Fred von happen may still be the only coach in NFL history who read Sylvia plath every day before heading out to the practice field. Maybe the violence of her poetry help to prepare him for the carnage of kickoff coverage. That's a great quote but just to further the point about Walsham ballot check and how they assemble their staffs. Yeah I mean look. Nobody was more cerebral lim bill right but he's a real tough guy. Nobody's more cerebral than Bella check. And he's a tough guy and Fred. Von Was a tough guy you know and he'd read Sylvia Plath and he was was excluding the part that she put her head in an oven and he literally read that every single day it was unbelievable and his vocabulary was incredible vocabulary. Sorry but they had a sense of toughness and I think that parcells is the same way. parcells wants to hire guys from the Military Academy. He wants smart people right. Everybody wants smart people. They want smart people but they also want smart people that are going to be branded and do what they wanna do. And demand from the players not collaborate from the players and I think that this analytical nonsense is truly we're all in the information business so all the information is really important in my belief is that we're missing in the point when somebody puts on and says well there in eleven personnel. And they're doing this and that like do you understand what the eleven is and what they're really trying to accomplish. I mean Tevin Coleman was the running back that was the main back this week because Kyle Shanahan wanted a running back. Who's GonNa Threaten Mike Zimmer in the backfield because Mike Zimmer was gonNA play three linebackers now once that happened that according to the chart? That's twenty-one toward the analytic he's in twenty one personnel but he's really not because he's got Coleman in the game he's only in twenty anyone with Coleman because he's got three linebackers so how do you differentiate that you know. How do you break down the information you know? There's so many times I've been in meeting with Bela check. I'll be watching tape. And I made a comment. He said well the only reason they're doing that is because they're doing up about anyone into that you know like oh I got it now I got you just taught me something right. Like that's the game

"And you deserve it. Oh, let me ask you this Lorenzo, and Steve how would you? This is flavor of the month. Like the flavor of the month is young. Upcoming offensive coordinator who was around quarterback to add success. That's what the Rams got we need. Obviously that's part of it. But I also think we're at a point in NFL history. Where you see a lot of the old guys that have been recycling. I think Bruce Arians will probably get a job, but he's not recitals the second job. Just a new generation of head coaches of the NFL starting to get their opportunities. Because a lot of the old guys the names that we're kind of used to hearing getting old worn out, and it's time for a new bus to come in. So yes, this is going to be I think the new flavor dislike the NFL works in the copycat type of success. You try to duplicate that. And that's what you're going to continue to see. That's why when Tony Dungy goes to Tampa Bay. And they start running the Tampa two defense. Airbase starts from Seattle wins the SuperBowl. The same thing when you get a young hot coach who has worked with quarterbacks, right? Then they start doing it. Everybody does the same thing for a while. You know, in this crazy how all these guys normally come from like a tree somebody street, obviously day back all these guys come back from Walsh's, but this Shanahan had Kyle, Sean and Matt leflore all on his staff, and those guys are just kind of branching out and doing it and doing it. And Andy Reid has this whole 'nother tree. Right anyway. So those probably be the two trees and Andy does he go back to wash? Or does he go back to he goes to back to Walsh through Mike Holmgren? How can they all have you know, kind of that similar between? They all kind of go back, which I think is kind of came off Mike Holmgren, staff ingredients. Right. And homegrown was a disciple of Bill walls back in San Francisco. Danny. Yeah, we're Shanahan was Bruce Arians. Apparently. He's getting close with Tampa Bay played for him out in Arizona. Right. Yeah. That's going to be a great hire for them. I really like Bruce. When I was there. He's a little bit a mix of new school and old school. He's still got a little rough tough to you. He doesn't he doesn't mince words. No, not at all. But then he's also real cool and approachable and you can relate to him. So I think he'll do a good job. And he's going to bring a lot of those people. I think obviously in this league is a tie circle. People you trust and believe in the people that he had narrowness. I think Todd Bowles is on his radar Keith Armstrong. I think Freddie kitchens is another guy. He may try to get from Cleveland to come down with them Nakada redo placate what they did in Arizona win the year before I got there. We weren't that good. But then he got there. We became a championship contender. They never reached it. But that's what we what he's able to think about it. That sounds really good to get Todd Bowles who's a defensive who's been a head coach, John York. He's really real well respected around the league. And of course, Freddie, kitchens really made his name from the last half of the season. They fired Hugh Jackson and Todd Haley in Cleveland all of a sudden at six and one over their last seven with a rookie quarterback. And you know, that that would be a staff that would be really really. Intriguing to watch work. Yeah. And so he has relationship the GM that was down there as well. Jason light who was in Arizona on. I was there under Steve time. So there's going to be a good synergy. And I think that was one of Bruce Bruce distress when I was in Zona is that GM head coach in owner work really well together, and he's if he's able to take that same mindset in same system down there. They'll they'll definitely have some success because they do have a couple of pieces veteran pieces that's going allow them to maybe even win sooner than later. Like, we did when I was in Arizona, the only wildcard in the coach GM ownership circle is ownership. So I need to have a big umbrella. There are you know, what they don't know what you're gonna get how they're gonna how the owner is going to be engaged. It's going to be disengaging say handle it handle it handle it, right? Or is it gonna say, wait a minute. I think that of thing, and I have a kind of an ongoing dialogue about the Arizona ownership. I think I think. Bidwell Michael bewilders fine. I think you'd you think there's a little bit too much interference. Sometimes I mean, it came up last week when they fire when they one year I was surprised at that. I guess. Now, this is Mike Bidwell is not a Norton. I say normal. You may have inherited the teams. But here's this guy was a federal prosecutor. He's got something on the ball. Yeah. So I I he's got a big benefit of the doubt for me. Okay. But I was shocked that they let the guy go after one year. I think he's a pretty good owner. I think it's pretty pretty good, especially I think he's doing a different than what his dad did nothing is doing when when I was there at least maybe some of that comes down to he didn't really trust wholeheartedly into the initial process because I think he had great respect for BA not that he didn't for Wilkes. But maybe there was something there that he didn't quite agree with the sale allowing it to linger. He cut ties let's reboot before we get too far down this river, and I got a rookie quarterback. And now now we're set back three years instead of just one. So obviously never liked to see a coach get fired like that after one season. But at the end of the day ownership you have that right to do it. Yeah. When they you never know what they see what tea leaves they read right? Who's in their era or what signs they've seen? Whether good or bad that say, you know, what it's time. Right. And they did it here in buffalo with Rex. And it seems like it was the right move at the right time. Yeah. For the time being so let's go can you participate in our Twitter poll Lorenzo here? It is. It's a simple one. Is it a good one? I'll let you decide. The Buffalo Bills headed in the right direction. We got people calling up and. Retrieve choices. Yes. Yes. They are. Yes. They are in next backed playoffs in two thousand nineteen. Yes, right direction. But patients required. Six percent, say no. So that's ninety four percents. A yes. Headed in the right direction. I say number one play out. Yes. Yes. Especially from Bank. Yes. Melissa layoffs. To the play offs. Some of the feedback is the goal should be playoffs. And I'm saying that the goal is winning Super Bowl. Fifty right. Always. Oh, that's the goal is always expectations may be playoffs at least and then get into the term. Then see what you go. But the goal is to win a championship. And and what are we defended? Finishing the division deserves third. Okay. And that always helps too because now you're playing another third place team when you take that jump up, and then you start playing some more of the top echelon team. So maybe some more winnable games for young team in there as well to patriots. 'cause it never bothers them. I play schedule whether they're saying I'm just saying there. I mean, they have Tom Brady a perennial playoff team. They are the standard the league. So that it doesn't apply to them and applies to teams trying to get to where they're at. I got you. Yes. Yes. If Lorenzo's back we've we should have put that as a response now enters messing around. And I know you said you guarantee as playoff I was just playing around. Stick around. You're in town snark, and we'll get you in here. Once in a while. Right. Yeah. Of course, we'll schedule hanging out with you guys. Thank you. Appreciate it. Thanks for coming in Lorenzo Alexander. My way until I'm wrong, then Satan, and that's why they're always going to be on the Carson Wentz van wagon, not the neck pulse because he can't do that. Yeah. And I think that's why both sides can be right here. They really can't. But I guarantee you unless they win the Super Bowl. That's when the discussion may be really has to change. But unless the eagles win the Super Bowl. This is Carson Wentz. His team for the next ten year. And the Baltimore Ravens. And I agreed with them made a decision in that game there. We're not we're not switching quarterbacks. What did they say Trent Dilfer by not switching quarterbacks during that game. What did they were? They telling me. Yeah. That was an organizational statement. I bet you the conversations that happened prior week in prior weeks. Joe flacco is well like, hey, Joe, no matter what happens no matter. How far we go. All 12 playoff coaches are tied to Bill Walsh or Parcells

"The head coaches in the playoffs that season come from the coaching. Trees of other Bill Walsh for Bill Parcells Abella check. Anthony Lynn, Sean Payton. All coached under Parcells Jason Garrett and Bill O'Brien are further down the Parcells coaching tape. But they all come from the Bill Parcells coaching tree. And that means the other seven come from the Bill Walsh coaching tree. Andy Reid coached under Mike Holmgren was Walsh disciple. Four others come directly from Andy. That's John Harbaugh. Matt Nagy Doug Peterson and Frank Reich. So as we prepare to watch these games this weekend and throughout these playoffs. There is still the influence of those two legendary preeminent coaches of the eighties. If you will in Walsh and parcels what what thoughts Trump to your mind? When you see that? Look, I know that Bill walls is someone who is highly highly respected by guys like parcels end by guys like Bill Belichick. He's at the very very top of this whole thing. And they as far as situational football's concern, and as far as really just being able to build an entire football federation. He's set the standard everyone else is trying to follow now. And now is it is pretty cool though to watch kinda how bills people have done how Andy Reed's people were doing. I mean, it's it's really neat. Because really there's only so many things you can do in full. There's only so many formations you can come up with and so many defenses you can run then it just comes down to good play styles. Make fights right and Walsh that the west coast against the smashmouth run the ball in play defense style of ourselves. And if you look at it that still holds true today. Most of the Andy Reid disciples over there. Bill walsh. They're going to get the ball out. Quick. Quick eater intermediate passing game highly rhythmic west coast offense. Then you look at the Bill Parcells disciple disciples, we're going to run the football player action shots down the field and had this big physical defenses that try to beat you up and want to make this game playing the phone booth. "Head coach and Westwood One analyst Mike Holmgren coach. Are you this week? I'm doing great Scott. How's it going? I'm doing well. And I got to tell you. I was thinking about you. I was thinking about you almost exclusively for a few minutes there last week when Miami Dolphins pulled off that crazy play on the final play the game with a reception to laterals in a run down the sideline for a touchdown. It was amazing to watch. And then my mind immediately went to the coaches on either side line, I, you know, Adam gays. Wow, the play we call Boise somehow worked and on the other side. Probably can't even say what Bill Belichick was thinking or saying at that point as rob gronkowski was his last line of defense and couldn't make a tackle. But from a coach's perspective on both sides. This thing for starters. They all say that you know, there's the play that they practice at the end to practice all week this crazy lateral play. Did you have one of those with every team you were with? Yeah. We have one and we prepared for we practiced it, but I'll be honest with Scott. I if I ever had to call it, you don't think it's gonna work. But that's what you that's your shot. So you might as well take it and give Miami credit for calling in an executing beautifully on the other side of the coin. Bill bell. Check. You just don't no one's going gonna throw the ball seventy yards. No one's going to do that. And and and so now you're open for all sorts of your alignment in. How did you play? And have you practice that play and having gronkowski on the field instead of a fast guy, another quicker guy like a defensive back where we replaced all those questions come up, but neither coach in that situation thinks that play will decide it, but you have to prepare for it. There's no question about that on Monday. Night. We watched the Seattle Seahawks. Take the Minnesota Vikings to school and right now they are a team. It's got the inside track on a playoff spot. Even though they can't win their division. You take a look new coordinators on both sides of the ball. The legion of boom has gone, although Bobby Wagner, certainly carrying on their legacy. Doug, Baldwin's spin outs. This is a completely different team for Seattle. And it brings me back around to the question is this Pete Carroll's best job of coaching this time. He's been there. You know, Scott. I think it it may be, you know, he's done a great job in Seattle as you know. But after all the changes in all not only player changes, but coaching changes, everyone looked at this. And I think in in his office, he would seek, you know, this is going to be a little bit of a transition year. Call it whatever you want to. But it's not going to be quite the same as it's been when he had been in Sherman and all those guys, but I will say this. And I said this from the beginning I thought they had a chance to make the playoffs because they have. The quarterback and they have Mike Solari whose their new offense Blanco twice. I think is the best in football. And I know that always play defense, they're young. But they're always play defense a certain way. And so they got a chance to get into the playoffs. That's what I thought. And I think that that is going to happen. But right now, I don't think any team wants to play them, you know, because they've gotten better as the season went along. The only thing it does it looks like they're not going to get home field advantage in the playoffs, which is a huge thing for the Seahawks. And so we'll see see what happens Joe flacco is healthy now coach and he's still not going to start. We found out this week. Lamar Jackson gets the ball on Sunday. And Joe flacco commented afterwards that he wants to play football. It's not easy to stand on the sidelines. He's not the same voice in the locker room when you get into a situation like this. And clearly the ravens are looking at the hot hand and also at the future as they move forward. Yeah. The giants tried to do that last year and sitting down Eli manning late in the season when you're a coach. And you've got a guy who's brought you to the dance one year Super Bowl. And then you've got to tell them, you know, what things are about to change your how do you handle something like that? Yeah. It's very difficult. The only experience I had with that was with Steve Young my last year again in San Francisco when he got hurt and Steve Bono came in. And we were hot we won four in a row and St. was Bono was doing a great job of Steve dot healthy again and see for George Siefert said no St. stick with Bono. We're gonna stick with Bono. And I had to tell Steve. And I knew Stephen this. He played for me in college. And it was one of the more difficult things. And he was upset and I got it. I did understand that as a head coach you have to make those tough decisions sometime. The thing is the young quarterback in Baltimore has been playing very well winning games with them. And he is going to be the quarterback of the future. So you can explain that to flacco any and and it can be all be true. But it doesn't help particularly with a guy with a lot of pride who has been there and been their quarterback. So it's hard, but you have to do it. And you have to be really honest with the player coach talk with Mike Mayock earlier in the show. We were talking about how big a factor defense. Is right now for the teams that are going to the playoffs, and you think of a couple of players Khalil Mack such a splash early in the season. Aaron Donald you know, has been as good as you can possibly be. When you've got a guy who is capable of changing an entire game or in certain spots for defense really kind of carrying a team. You had that enriching white. What does that mean to a team? How does it change the way that you look at things knowing that you've got that guy on your side when the defense is out there? Well, it means everything when we were able to sign Reggie White in the first year free agency to come to Green Bay. It changed everything it changed the product on the field. First of all, the most obvious thing. The fact that he has great football player. Maybe the best defensive player I've ever been around. And then you his presence in the locker room his respect among his peers, his personality all that kind of stuff helped us get to the Super Bowl and win it and he. Like far on offense and Reggie on defense. Those two players kind of carried that team and their teammates loved to play for them and their great football players. But then I think the guys you mentioned MAC endow. You know, he makes rally around them. They see them making plays and it makes everybody better. And that's what you have in those two players. And Reggie certainly was that for us coach, thanks so much. We'll talk again next week. Thank you gonna wrap things up when we return. You're.

"And I cannot wait to see coach. We appreciate your generosity with your time today. Thank you guys. Very very much. It was nice talking with you. Thanks goes Cassini. Well, they have a buck, man. I know you have such a Great Lakes ship with coach, but I took notes I took notes throughout that entire interview. It's a great insight there from Cobra man coach was one of the best. He's one of the best. He's been around it. He kinda spits to gospel straight from Bill Walsh's mouth in haven't been around him. I as a player coach and then working in the front office when he was the executive VP and hey coach of Seattle Seahawks. He has a clear philosophy in what he believes in. I think the thing that is fascinating to hear him talk. And then to know that all of his descendants are of change in the way football is played Andy Reid in particular. I can't tell you enough about Andrew. Andy Reid was the tight ends coach. When I was there. Andy Reid would run the scout team. Andy Reid, eventually moved up and became to quarterbacks coach and was very close in instrumental in the development of Brit for but I never would have thought it coach re would be the innovator that was in a National Football League. When I tell you about their conversation that I had with coach HOGAN coach home run with. Is serious about the time. He was at BYU and BYU day only hit four running place, and he talked about that was probably three too many in his mind. And so think about a guy who loves the throat a ball. And the thing about Andy Reid who worked up on him and saw the success that Green Bay head throwing the ball over the yard to watch him in Kansas City where they do throw it. But they do a bunch of creative stuff is fascinating. But it all stems from the way Mike Holmgren at office and ran that team in Green Bay because a lot of things that I see when looking Kim city still reminds me of the glory days back in Green Bay. Yeah. That was a man I enjoyed that. And definitely could tell the the close relationship in the respect the coach has for you. And obviously goes both ways there. Let's jump in here real quick before we get out of here. Just from what we saw this last weekend in college football. Once again, the the move to six bump has worked for a guest. Daniel Jones came on the podcast and all I did was still for three sixty one and run for one hundred eighty six yards in a big game there for the Duke. He's man he he killed it. Like, you know, like we're going to have to stop having these guys that are on if they're going to impact the game that my almighty modern present. So we have agree on a couple of weeks ago and he lights up the Texas longhorns. Then we talked to Daniel Jones, and he still may be scoring touchdowns almost has six hundred yards by himself in the way that he is control. Do he was controlling the action. He looked like the prospect that you started hyphen, he debt debt, right there that film that is a signature game film in terms of his ability to make plays as a run in a throw in. We definitely. On a collision course here with Alabama. And Clemson that showdown is coming looks like it's inevitable there. I think they both are going to be in the final four, obviously, they're both gonna win their games probably in a blowout fashion and meet up for what the what is that the fourth or fifth time they'll have played play each other here in the dabble saving era fourth time. I think right. No. So in believing savings got him to to one right now one was in the semi-final last year. So I definitely think that's coming one thing. I finished up those defensive Lamma for Clemson book. I'm anxious to see once you get a chance to really dig in study these guys because. Dexter lawrence. Is you know, very well on the show you dad Coachman highschool big powerful, physical dominant..

"They have they would pick right now, they have one they have sixteen and they have twenty five so twenty five would be the pick that got for for Khalil Mack sixteen from the Cowboys for Mark Cooper. And then they've rightfully earned number one. Yeah. I mean, I don't know. I right now, I don't have a lot of confidence in the picker via Jon Gruden even regimented maybe go get some more picks and give yourself more more lottery tickets, but just maybe just add more bad players. I don't know. But they have to figure it out. Because now the total reveal no free agency, they can go and try and find some guys, and maybe they find it offensive weapons every agency like that. And then they commit to build on their defense up through the draft. But regardless Oakland, Raiders have to get it. Right. They have to find some playmakers in this draft. I think fascinating team to really look at. And we've talked about it the New York Jets because the New York Jets. Now, they have their quarterback of the future potentially. They could have a new coach we look at this draft. We talked about this draft being very heavy when it comes to defense. I don't know if there's going to be a running back or wide receiver that is worthy of being picked. Maybe there's a tied in. But can you take tied in top ten? This might be. You know, what this difference maker? This is going to be a go defense in the draft. And it's gonna be all your free agency focuses on offense for the jets. That's my guess. Yeah. I mean, I think that that's what it will have to be in in we've seen. Mike maccagnan. Take the best player vailable whenever he's been in adoption and has worked out really well for him Linnet Williams, Jamal Adams, even in the top twenty s when he took Doron Lee it is worked out they do a good job of drafting defense ago. So maybe you're right. Maybe they do commit their free agent capital to being able to find office guys. They continued to draft and going to build up his defense that has been disappointing of late. But this defense is still loaded with talent. You know, what I forgot is that Green Bay having made that trade with New Orleans New Orleans came up for Davenport they have to once in the first round right now for season ended today. Green Bay would be picking. Let's see they picking twenty one and thirty one so two first round picks for the Packers chance to to get better. They're interesting to say, look, we've got plenty of time to to jump into the draft stuff. Speaking of the Green Bay Packers. This is a fun conversation. I think you're gonna enjoy a chance to talk with one of the all-time great coaches in the NFL and the the new focus here on the NFL football life. Here's our conversation with Mike Homer. All right Bucky. I know I'm fired up for this interview. You might even be more fired up for this interview. A man, you know, quite well Super Bowl winning head coach Mike Holmgren joins the show coach. How're you doing today? I'm doing great guys going to talk with you. Well, I know I know Bucky wants to jump in here right away. Because you guys go way back. Go ahead buck. Hey, coach is such a honor to talk to you. Because it's been a while the first thing I kind of want to talk to you about obviously you as such a remark career in terms of coaching quarterbacks. What are some of the things that you look for when you're looking at a quarterback and where they can be a franchise quarterback. Well, it's it's I was very fortunate, you know, to deal with some great players over the years. And I know when I was with the forty Niners and was set out when I was the quarterback. Coach there to actually scout out but quarterback all over the country that they we might draft there. Of course, you'll Montana was playing there. But we went, oh, he I had to look at a lot of young guys. And so I did I did kinda prioritize my list of what I thought was important it started. With obviously the most obvious thing is Kenny pass the ball. And can he be accurate? That's the number one thing quarterback as to be able to do..

"And now move the sticks with Daniel, Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks what's up everybody. DJ lucky here. Back on move, the sticks. Man, I'm doing great. I'm doing great because that's all a fascinating Monday night football game where I'm pumped up on pumped up about Ilah manning and Odell Beckham and the positivity that was coming out their locker room after their win. I love right. La, LA, LA, LA love. Big win over the Niners. Yeah. The niners. Great football team Lazio Cal. They can't a no question. Trust me. I get it. What we'll talk about this game here in just a minute. Also on the episode today. Buck one a year, a former coaches in all time, or we're going to get to have on the show Mike Holmgren Super Bowl winning coach who's really been around some of the greats in the history of the National Football League. We have a a lengthy interview with him. You've got a great relationship with him. I think the folks are going to really enjoy that conversation. Yeah. I'm really excited to talk to coach coach has done. A lot of great things in National Football League guy who was a high school coach for decade before making his way into the National Football League uncommon story uncommon journey for a NFL head coach. Yeah, we're going to definitely look forward to that conversation. I think you guys will enjoy it as well. Talk little college football on here, and we'll get into the draft order. It's always nice pick your head up this time of year and take a glance out in the future. And see what that draft order looks like we'll do that as well. But let's start right here. You mentioned it book. I jokingly said look the forty Niners and not a good football team. They all count they all count the same. And that was that was definitely an uplifting win enough lifting moment there for the New York Giants, especially with the performance there of of of Eli manning getting the ball Odell Beckham junior finally found found a way to get it to them. But I think the thing that is telling about where you live manning is Ota Beckham junior runs a double move. He may be passed a second year about twenty yards and he waits for pass from manning that looked like a punt like he was sitting there waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and couldn't get there. And so the jazz are really really limited in terms of what they're able to do because they can't necessarily push the ball down to feel Ella. Just doesn't have. He just doesn't have the range anymore. And so they're really increasingly relying on the playmakers abilities to make things happen with the ball in the hands on on run after catch place. And what we saw was there talented enough to be able to win some games like that. But it just makes it so much harder but saquon Barkley saquon Barkley, he's. Angle route coming out of the backfield his ability to create mismatches. He is everything that we thought it would be in terms of being able to make plays in the passing. No question. He's he's a fantastic player. They still have some some needs upfront. I know they played better in this game. Only gave up one sack, but they do need some better personnel long that offense if line I want to switch it over to the other side because it's not easy when you're sitting here at two and eight as the as a San Francisco Giants are San Francisco forty Niners are sorry. The Padres waiting to see what they're great here. Got baseball in the brain. Now, the forty Niners with only two wins book. But when I look at this team, I'll give them a little bit of hope going forward into the future because they're starting identifies some young pieces here when you got Matt Breda went over one hundred yards in this game. Did a nice job catching the ball as well. As had a touchdown through the year. You look at George Kittle who's emerged as one of the better young tight ends. How about that, man? Every come in. Never. I didn't either. We didn't hardly do anything in college. So they've got some young weapons. And now you think about. Okay. Next year. You get Jimmy Garoppolo back next year. You get your McKinnon back to have another high draft pick. Maybe you sprinkle in a free agent or two..

"And the fact that he's playing such a high level his age. And I mean that says something I mean, it, you know, you talk about Tom Brady drew Brees guys that have played a long long time and are still playing at such a high level. It's remarkable in the same thing could was said about you know, he played a long time, and he was still playing a very high level near the end of his career. So that's a different thing. Now, it wasn't a lot of quarterbacks shelf-life. You also started hitting a certain age. And then it started to. Change. But crews remarkable I'm happy for him. He's a good great guy. So would you say he's the MVP of this season knowing that Mahomes could top fifty touchdown passes. And what girly has looked like for Rams team that has many wins as the saints? Well, I think that's going to be a tough call. I think because of if you're talking about most valuable player girly certainly falls into that category. For that team. They're having a great season Mahomes because he's so young. I think you people you just go. Wow. You know, they did the same thing with Brett when he got his MVP's awards, you know, young quarterback playing such a high level. It's it's in Kansas City. Of course is doing a great job with Andy Reid. And then drew Brees. He's kind of I would say the sentimental favorite. If you will, you know, because he's he's played a long time. And and and it's it's great example of of the perfect. I think of the of the perfect coach with the perfect player. You know, you got Sean Payton with with Brees. You got handy with Mahomes, you know, and you got McVay with early in his offense. And and that sometimes overlooked that that relationship, and so yeah there it's a tough call. I said a mentally. Reas-? I love I love the guys breezes. My guy Mike Holmgren here on the rich Eisen show. And again ran Andy Reid is on your coaching tree coach. And so we're hearing so much that read liked Mahomes targeted Mahomes, saw Mahomes, drafted Mahomes, grooming, Mahomes because it reminds him so much of farve. Would you agree with that assessment? I think I would I think what you you know, he has great arm strength. He moves. He's a little bit unpredictable. You know and into say that about Brett would not be an understatement or overstatement. And I think that in anti solve that Andy, Andy, also, you know, recommended to me Matt Hasselbeck good. I for quarterback. He really does. And not only that is you knows how to coach and he's doing all the right things from homes and opening up stuff that you know, he didn't learn from me he he's just doing it. He's creating so. So, but I think that I think that's a fair assessment as to say that Mohme's reminds him what about this offense? Is there anything that does resemble the stuff that you were doing with Brett and read on the staff with mooch and Gruden back in the day? I think so I think there's a basis, you know, there's a there's a fundamental basis I learned from coach Bill Walsh. And then I carried on and the guys who cared on a little bit. And while they say, okay, it's the west call it what you want to call it because of the new type of style of play in college, you're going to have that sort of influence as well. But the basics about throwing the ball and control passing game taking shots spreading the field using your formations to get mismatches all that kind of stuff. Yeah. They'll develop their own their own thing. You always added on and develop your own philosophy to go with something you learn. But I think the basics down when you get down to the nitty gritty of it. I see a lot of similarities. So have you spoken to read is read reached out to you about Mahomes throughout this process of of coming up with one of the more creative offenses we've seen in the twenty first century at work rich. I'd like to say, it was all meet nice, you know, but, but it I haven't talked to any other than the fact we text about house going..

"Ended up panicking he was and i don't remember clear enough but he was the hot name was he knows that way i will came from gough member bread far was in on home the quarterback from mike holmgren look at all of those guys on that staff that ended up getting jobs in the nfl right the same thing can be said for guys like aaron rogers it also could be said for a tom brady no these coaches come offer these staffs with all these great quarterbacks and the next thing you know everybody thinks they're the next guy to do what they did where they were in their in their previous spot but i was on the corner if they don't have quarterback with much right and it's amazing how important quarterback yeah while he is in the more you go through the seasons the how just blaring it is well one of the things that you're seeing here late in the season you're seeing a lot of turnovers in the nfl why is that because you have a lot of guys that are backup quarterbacks by nature that are playing now and they're playing four quarters they're playing three aims four games in a row uh they don't take care of the ball they don't yesterday you watch drew brees playing its panthers when he breaks the pocket his head he's all of six foot his at is on a swivel my looked in the sea where everybody is and meanwhile still having the poised to look down field because he doesn't want to get hit by somebody the force fumble so he is he's out there with the poison the awareness of being on the field and being going through it for four quarters and he's been doing it for so long that when you watch images becomes happenstance and somehow this sixfooter figures out how not to get the ball back down at the lines scrimmage amazing cvs rain oakland you get the two strips on the saxon it's the whole pocket awareness 920 on the fan the morning show with boomers size and and it is time for.

"Offensive coaching was that great in minnesota but obviously they put him in the system where he feels very comfortable and he succeeding but you you can go back in time and look at all the great quarterbacks i mean they all have one thing income and they've all been with really good coaches whether it was bill walsh with joe montana mike shanahan with john elway tom brady with bill bella check aaron rodgers with mike mccarthy brett far up with mike holmgren and go on and on jonathan you don't get the most out of a quarterback unless you have really good coaching and i mean for me for gough number one that's the difference it's mcveigh wide anything else that he's done as you mentioned coaching does matter for sure and we already know the established quarterbacks lie tom brady for as as we know exactly all of us as fans know exactly where the years we note aaron rogers is we know would rot berger is we know with the you lied manning was or drew brees is or matt ryan from the falcons or or when andrew luck was healthy what he could be derrick car where the arrows pointing up philip rivers is a veteran we know these guys but he they sites it really excites me to be able to see young quarterbacks like that the playing well we're are back it up with numbers golf has completed thirty nine fifty nine passes good for six hundred sixty six yards seven touchdowns zero interceptions in the past two games lena national football league with eight point five yards per attempt in ranked seventh with a one or one point five passer waiting for the rams that rams team or was nowhere it came to los angeles than i had when i was on the spla had to teach people what football was when i was out there for a couple of days is like a of the program director their their pose a make sure we talk some some footballer try to give people engaged in nfl now now you're los angeles you have a quarterback that you can look at the same thing with keen i'm here i will show what keenan was going to be especially with the bridgewater injury and where we're not he's gotta when he's going to come back but that's a positive in the league last two seasons with these two guys have been able to.
