"The pala Thank you so much We appreciate that Certainly a risk off day today Let's take a look at the credit market specifically Look at some healthcare stuff We can do that with Mike Holland senior credit analyst for Bloomberg intelligence Mike so it's a risk off day today Lots of red on the screen You've covered the healthcare space from the credit perspective for a long time Healthcare is often held out as a safe haven Is that the case that you've seen over this pandemic environment we've been dealing with Katie it's great to be here with you Thanks for having me on I appreciate the question The past several years in the past year or so with COVID I think there has been a bit of a safe haven aspect but I think it's more interesting looking today at what's moving If you look at the equity markets off the credit markets have been off and they're bloody as well If you look at high yield CVS as a proxy credit default swaps we're back down to levels on the high yield CDS index back on the levels not seen since November 2020 And so basically one year low and part of that I think is obviously the fear with concerns about what could happen from the South African variant concerns about obviously shutdowns are in the back of our mind If we go back a year ago hospitals obviously were basically shut down and we're deferring surgical procedures people were not going to the doctor and we're actually still seeing some of the fallout from that today But I think we're in the early stages of seeing this bleed through into the healthcare space but what is evident is the equity volatility is certainly bleeding over into high yield and investment grade as well and the Bond side Particularly in my colleague and friend Jody Laurie's got coverage of some of the cruise lines and some of the leisure and bonds And those are the biggest movers in the most actively traded It looks like today according to trace activity There's a few other Bond names that healthcare bonds that are trading off But I think a lot of the movement in bonds today are index and fund driven It's not fundamental yet We're still obviously gauging the fears Is this going to become a reality So the impact on healthcare particularly we're not seeing that yet Yeah I did notice that the CDX index for investment grade bonds at least was higher this morning But Mike I want to get your perspective on how this new variant fears about this new variants and what it could become might affect trends that have already taken hold in the healthcare space And I mean I know you've written about the fact that hospital companies for example they've been investing in outpatient facilities For example is that something that picks up should like you say some of these fears become a reality Yeah that's a great question Katie I think healthcare has been a really slow slowly evolving industry over the past several decades right There's a lot of entrenched interests There's a lot of companies that have a lot of cloud on the payer side on the provider side But it takes a certain shake to the system to sort of facilitate some of that change It reminds me a lot of the professor I had years ago Steven J Gould who was sort of an evolutionary biologist and talks about as it relates to evolution in general as the big changes through his contribution was punctuated in equilibrium right Things kind of don't really change until they change And I think in healthcare in particular COVID helped facilitate sort of maybe a more of a focus on your provider for a while payers were controlling the game Thank you united health right The united health a couple of years ago started to see some declines in employer based care They're growth united was fueled by employee employers growing coverage As baby boomers have age out of employment aging into Medicare united case in point they've been investing in the provider side of the business and healthcare analytics And as that of the backdrop you look at sort of the companies that are growing right now and sort of the VC space and a lot of these companies maybe it's city and D or one medical or these growing companies in healthcare are providing care for the patient which if you look at a lot of folks that I talked to on the analyst I think that health insurance in a way is sort of a dying animal because they're not really providing care and we need to get care to the patient And I think during COVID if you go back you looked at what the value proposition for health insurers was they didn't really provide care They were collecting premiums and not providing care And I think people today whether it be through telehealth or behavioral you're seeing a lot of growing and evolving companies I think providing care for patients that were able to do that before Mike thanks so much for joining us Really appreciate getting your thoughts and perspective on the healthcare space and on the credit environment for the healthcare sector My Collins senior credit analyst for Bloomberg intelligence Right now let's head down to Washington.
