"In the sport. Kirk show me, winning out the chip four championships, a ton of races. Matt Kenseth, you look at what he's done. I mean, two Daytona 500 southern 500 Coke 600, all star wind, cup chairmanship. I mean, it goes on and on and on. They're all really well deserving. And it's good to see. I am ecstatic from Mike Hilton. I'm a huge Mike Elton fan. Mike kelton is a leader in this sport and I am so happy that he was recognized today because he has made an unbelievable amount of contributions to this. Has been a leader for decades and still it really is Nate. So kind of give us a feel for in the room, how the discussions went, how the vote went compared to past years, maybe. So Pasteur's Marty, I would say it's been a little bit more contentious. Sometimes some arguments break out. This year, we started at 1 p.m., we were done by two 45. Wow. And I think they had another hour built into the schedule for potential discussion. I think people arrived knowing who they wanted to vote for to Jeff's point. I think kenzie was very much a clear cut first ballot Hall of Famer. He's the only cup champion on the ballot, both modern era and pioneer one of the most consistent drivers in history and also the Triple Crown winner with cocoa 600 southern 500 and the two day ten O 500 wins. So that was clear cut. And I think hershel mcgriff he finished in the top three vote gutters last year of guys who didn't get inducted. So I think even though you can look at his record and say, you know, there's not a lot there in terms of cup success and like four cup victories, hirsch mcgriff had a lot of support coming in and you know, he's the guy who raced the 1950s southern 500 was going to say the very first the very first race at Darlington Raceway. Where NASCAR will be this weekend. Hershel mcgriff drove drove his oldsmobile from Oregon where he lives to Darlington race that car at Darlington and then drove home. So a great story and a long career. Hershel is a great example of, you know, this is a NASCAR Hall of Fame. It's not a Cup Series Hall of Fame. And Herschel McGrath is a great example of someone that contributed to the sport, had tons of success, not just at the cup level. I mean, tons of tons of wins and now is an orca series. And I mean, he was the leader of that. And so he had a major impact on this sport. And it's important for people at home that don't really know. This is not just a Cup Series Hall of Fame. It is a Hall of Fame that goes throughout all the NASCAR and it's great that drivers like hirschberg can be recognized. Herschel still with us at 94 and the oldest person to ever enter a NASCAR race at 90 years old. So he's got a lot of stats out of also ran the 24 hour Le Mans twice as well. Kirk scholar dean, 46 wins with Dale Earnhardt senior as a crew chief. That's a lot of wins. Four championships and they did it in an era where they really they were able to put them back to back twice to be able to do that. And I think had he stayed on, crew chiefing, they definitely.
Mixon runs for career-high 165 yards, Bengals crush Steelers
"The Bengals have swept their season series with the Steelers for the first time since twenty oh nine winning forty one ten behind Joe Mixon Joe burrow and a strong defense Nixon rushed for a career high one hundred sixty five yards and two touchdowns burrow threw for a touchdown and scrambled for another as the seven four Bengals dropped the Steelers to five five in one coming down the stretch I think we really hit our stride so we gotta keep having great great great weeks of practice and I think we have the guys that are are excited about we're wrapping not satisfied Cincinnati scored on its first four drives and former Steeler Mike Hilton returned to Ben Roethlisberger pass for a twenty four yard touchdown late in the first half Roethlisberger was picked off twice and sacked twice finishing with two hundred sixty three yards I'm Dave Ferrie

"Like your kid on christmas. And you get what you want. And i think there's something like funding refreshing about. I don't know because i career when he beat the titans like he just hugged security guard like the guy had just given him a million dollars. And i love that you know. I think that there's like a is a whimsical nature to that that that makes me enjoy. And he's i mean he was always like that he was. I think you're seeing this a little bit now in san francisco where i mean. He was the life behind that team. That made the super bowl right as much kyle. Shanahan was the schematic force. Robert sala was the culture in the energy in the rah rah and so i think the jets caught that at the right time. And he's the right person for this organization that you have to be that way. I mean we saw what rex ryan was able to do. And kind of blow some life into this organization. I think that robert solid the same kind of guy. Just a very different approach. It's a great point. Connor about what he brought to the forty niners one thing. We should touch on. Briefly was a very questionable lowering the helmet penalty on bengals defender. Mike helton it didn't seem in line with the spirit of the rule. Obviously any rule changes implemented to protect player. Safety are important and good and necessary. But in this instance. Mike helton seemed to go in to make the tackle look like his target was going to be the torso of tie johnson. The running back looked like he was just going in for a pretty textbook. Tackle form tie johnson then. Almost reflexively lowers his head to brace for the contact but ends up basically dipping his head into mike hilton. It didn't seem like a very good call and it was the third downplay that have made the call against the bengals. The bengals would have gotten the ball. Now there are a lot of different things that change the outcome of the game. This was just one factor in the outcome of the game but it is disappointing to see a questionable call. Have such an impact on the game. And you know be something that's not reviewable. It's disappointing for a couple reasons right especially when you hate when i thought this about the body way rule Lowering the helmet rule when their rules that are designed by the competition committee to increase the safety of the game and to key players. Healthy when it's over called or it's called. I think it contributes to the cynicism that certain players especially defensive players have about the rules in the first place and you know how the rules are already against them. And how well. Then if you know you're gonna call it anyway. It doesn't matter how hits you you know. And so there is that attitude right zad undercurrent and when something like that happens. It is sorta disappointing right because these rules as much as everybody wants to roll the rise in you know in in in shake their head at it and say odds ruining the game and all this stuff. It's designed with with good in mind right. I mean there's no you know we don't sound like the. Nfl wants to turn everything into fifty point game. Although i guess. I'm supposing that will be good for the brand but i do think that there is a genuine concern after seeing generations of players. Come out of this thing. Not okay that when you miss call something like that then it just sort of balloons and the the sarcasm in the cynicism just increases forty niners bears.

"That's insane like nine sacks the second most in the league and we all knew that they needed to address it and right now they have not done a good enough job to protect him and maybe part of that is joe right. He's not as mobile as he was pre. Acl as he comes back from that injury. But i think there's a lot to two point at when it comes to that offensive line and they need to button it up all these protection issues. If they're gonna get out of heinz field with a win on sunday talking about jomar chase now the the bengals have had some serious receiver town last twenty years with especially with chad johnson and aj green Do you think your march is is going to be at their level and you know. Is it going to be a few years. Do you think he's has a chance to be that kind of player this year. I think he can be what. Aj green wants as a rookie and then some now in not that. Aj not that he's better than aj was as a rookie but like numbers wise because of the opportunities because of the quarterback he has because of the offense and the way. The game is like age as a rookie was probably more ready for the nfl Just because he had been season. That george wasn't coming off of a year plus layoff and I in everything that goes in with that that being said joe different than green but it just seems like when the lights come on. He's ready to go. You know i. it's you know. We'll see this week. He's going to go for a bengals record. So he's tied with green the only two receivers in bengals history touchdown catches in their first. Two games are green in tomorrow. Chase and chase can get a third straight alas nap greens record so no i. I think expectations are that high. And i think that he can tap the thousand yard mark so to speak especially with the seventeenth game but You know will. He will that production lead to wins. You certainly hope so. And that's something that we need to see because it is good as chad. Johnson will hasn't he was my favourite bengal play. Maybe my favorite bengal player ever in. Who's just brought so much excitement to the city. I don't remember him dominating pittsburgh much i remember. Tj cushman zodda. More than chad. Because i think they doubled him. And you know we'll see you know if that happens. Or if cia arafah chase rather can be more effective in a rivalry tight game like this now talking about Players specifically in this matchup. I think someone steeler fans definitely missile. A whole heck of a lot is Mike hilton not. Can you break down. What he's kind of meant to the bengals So far and whether or not you think you might have a big game against his former team. Yeah he's benetton. An instant impact right away in the secondary in that defensive backs room in with the safety is one thing that he did and he said he's stolen from joe hayden is he moved jar and he created this low system. Where you know. If you're caught loafing early in camp during practices you gotta put money in the jar and at the end you know. It was a way to hold everybody accountable. At the end no one was put money in the jar because they retired to put money in the jar and he said he stole it from joe haden in pittsburgh and it was kinda cool that he brought that over and they all went out to eat afterwards. And that's been one of the more surprising. Units i think is the secondary it for all the new faces that they've brought in trae. Weinstein play a game but mike Has certainly been a reliable nickel corner. Adding pressure You guys know firsthand. How as a blitzer definitely equality quality tackler and. then she'll bail was yahoo they added. It's been a nice one two combo so we'll see if trae wayne's can go this week i don't think so i think it's gonna be another week. But when he comes back. I think the bengals could have an above average secondary and mike. Helton's a huge farnum at from a leadership standpoint and obviously on the field guarding opposing slot corners. Like you mentioned. Mike hilton and To w the bengals retooled their defense. A why like. I was looking through the restaurant. I was like wait. Wait people bengals How has this drastically. Different defense personnel wise looked and is it still the same defensive scheme we seen or or should we be looking for a different style. Defense to know it's you know it's that three four style that you've seen. I just think that the pieces fit better to answer kind of that. First part of your question. I think they've exceeded expectations. Really have your right. They've invested a ton of money on defense so much so that people like me. I think have questioned why they evan. Invested more on the offensive line with the resources at that being said this defensive line looks much improved specifically the interior of this defensive line. Dj reader has been a beast in. He only played five games last year due to a quad injury in. He looks just as good as ever looked to be quite honest. The first couple of games of the year and you look really good and limited reps in the preseason but then they went out and they got larry jobe from the browns they. They went out and got multiple different Proven defensive tackles traded for bj l. from the giants and he had two sacks in week one So yeah. I think that the interior of this defensive line is where they're going to try to make their. Hey not only pressuring opposing. Quarterbacks obviously slowing down a guy like nausea amazon sunday in for two weeks at least the retooling of this defense as has paid off and they look like they're going to be much improved from what we've seen over the past couple of years now. Speaking of that defense they could have a pretty big game Getting after ben rothlisberger of course calling spate of spayed. The steelers offense has struggled to say the least through two weeks. This far Do you can anticipate that ben. Ross rothberg could be in for another beating against the bengals front. I i think that certainly the plan for the bengals right and It it's to me. it's going to be much easier. Said than done 'cause we we've seen it for a decade and a half. Now of ben being hurt being being up and then he's going to go out and throw for four touchdowns right and you know that's what happens against the bengals..

"Dislike. I was here for. Let's go i don't. You're not a steelers anymore. Let's go guys go over up here in the pacific. It couldn't have been any better for me Seattle watching those guys play. But anyhow looking at the steelers match this sunday we will. Of course ask james routine in the second half his thoughts on all things bengals. But what's what's your overall your first overall kind of impression of the bengals as we head into this game the first. Afc north clash for the steelers this year out. What what are your general thoughts on the bengals and how the steelers can match up with them. I don't even know this team like they changed half their defensive personnel. A whole bunch of brand new players Their offensive line. They went out and like didn't draft. Kanesa will but if you and everyone's like oh their offense allies trashing joe borough killed and then if you look at like pass rush win ray. Espn's pass rush win rate. Pass right past block win. Rei and pass and run block win right man if i could talk. The bengals are laying your job. Way up the list offensive lines in the nfl. Like do anything Seventeen past win rate this year. So far i don't i mean they've played anybody but chicago is khalil mack. You're still. You're still facing some talent out there. So i mean in the receiver course. Different the quarterback. Joe borough you barely saw last year and he wasn't really anything yet but now i don't know what to expect from his team at all. I really don't accept. I hope they still stink. Like armored vehicles are like come on guys you can still be the bengals. Don't do that whole we're not the bengals anymore. At least one team. Ohio has to suck. Right right yeah. I'm pretty sure that's a constitutional law. I'm canadian so. I'm pretty sure that that's that's how that works out. Any who um so moving along in our in our programming here. That's the word i'm looking for. What what do you think of. Mike hilton are i. can look at him as cincinnati bengals playing against the pittsburgh steelers. Is he someone that's going to kind of dominate to the steelers the steelers find a way to dominate him. That's going to be an interesting thing. I was because we were all like. Are they gonna use him right at all To go look up the numbers. He's actually been blitzing there. You're using was he's got a couple cuts bull tackles for loss coupled. Pressures hasn't gotten a soccer. Qb hit yet. but they they. He was on Someone was interviewing. He was talking about he. He's looking forward to trying to hit big ben and he was like it was one of those moments where he's like. I've never gotten a hidden like we're not allowed to hit. Then you have to kind of touch him. He's like look forward to actually like lay in a good one on him and trying to tackle him. So i am excited. I still see. I have a problem not liking. Mike and i can't. I can't really do that yet. So if he comes into really starts playing while against us that could change very quickly or stop one of the things that sat like now the steelers have all this extra money and they totally could have kept my hilton alec looking at the books. That play against the raiders. When henry rugs had sixty whatever you're a touchdown traynor would kinda like struggled his way through blitz off that who might kill now play in the backyard. That's a sack and we're still in that game. It's it's a. It's a tenth of a second difference between a sixty one yard touchdown and a hit where the ball goes haywire. Because you hit him early by tilton what ban. They're like two tenths of a second earlier. It's just that he's that guy you know. There's not many of them. Yeah oh goodness gracious. Well you're living you learn in the nfl and it's just part of the business but They face the former steeler on sunday. That's definitely going to be fun. One I will be looking for my killing the There on the field there watching him probably closer than anyone else in the bengals defense but another name. That's there a new guy trey hendrickson. He was The master For the saints before he joins cincinnati in the off season of course replacing carl lawson who of course himself went on to be a jet in and get injured. What do you think of hendrickson and see someone that could give the steelers offense align fits. I'm i'm a little worried about him. But i think he was more a product. He was benefit of on it to the saints defense If i right he was one of the like athletic freaks of the pass. Rushers like the two thousand eighteen draft. He was like one of those crazy. Athletes two thousand seventeen. Yeah he was. He was one of the guys up there with. Tj watt that. We're like they're like. Wow these guys listen crazy crazy athleticism i. I don't worry about him too much but he has. He has their most dangerous pass rusher. he's the guy who wrote to look out for But i'm not. I'm not too worried about their pass. Rush so i had an article run out today on behind steel curtain dot com about offensive line. Play excuse me and how the steelers could try to improve their line..

"They throw it for Dalvin Cook catches at the 10 2 defenders in pursuit. He gets to the sideline before being shoved out of bounds at the 18 by Jesse Bates, an eight yard pick up on the screen to Dalvin Cook. That was a great play by Kirk Cousins just to get the football out of his hand. Because the Bengals came when the slot corner blitz they brought Hilton and he had to backpedal in and then just feathering the ball out of there, but since they threw the screen to where Hilton vacated So once you get the ball out of his hand, the Bengals had to recover five touches so far for Dalvin Cook three runs to catch is second down into the 18. They handed to cook and he is going to pick up the first down, but not by much he needed to in Game three. Running between the tackles. BJ Hill just recently picked up from the New York Giants, making the tackle for Cincinnati as they moved the change here. I want to correct myself, the Bengals generated first out, Joe mixes first down Josh after he caught a screen pass. And then on the next set of downs the Bengals or faced 3rd 12 and couldn't convert and then 123 and out of their second possession. 3rd 19. You can't be in those third and 12th 19 Situation. Five defensive lineman on the field for Cincinnati. Vikings have at 1st and 10 at their own 21 with an offset I. Behind cousin's hand. The fullback is checked back in cousins drops straight back to throw under pressure swept around a sack for B. J Hill has he brings down cousins at the 12? Well, they brought 16 and the Bengals brought six on that play. They brought through it. And and they just overpowered, overwhelmed the Minnesota Vikings. I like the aggressiveness. I like the aggressiveness alive. Bring bring a bunch and then Kirk Cousins will take sacks. There's no question about it. Henderson got up the football field and then 100 Stone made him step up. That's when sex occurring. BJ Hill pushed the pocket that his first sack with the Cincinnati language. Not only do they bring six, but five of the six were defensive lineman. That's a lot of size coming at you. Here's a screen pass that Justin Jefferson he does not get back to the line of scrimmage Mike Hilton from the slot corner spot, making the tackle for one yard loss, and that's what Mike Hilton does. He blitz as well off the slot, and he plays those screens so short passes to the perimeter outstandingly well in the slot because he is a very, very sure tackler. He's probably as good a tackle her on the back end. As there is in the NFL third down 20 for the Vikings at their own 11. Minnesota has to get to the 31. The Bengals have three defensive backs playing near the 30 yard line. Ameer Abdullah has checked in at running back cousins catches The shotgun staff. Standing tall in the pocket. Now under pressure tackled at the one yard line, they're going to market down at the two Larry Ogunjobi getting to Kirk Cousins and the Vikings will putt from the very back of the end zone. The Bangles don't leave, recorded two sacks and again. They got two sacks on this drive. Head out to Mike's car wash to monitor received $5 off Mike Ultimate Wash and say, Thanks, Luanne Romo Appreciate that aggressive posture. That time, though they only brought three nowhere for cousins Go with the ball, and they still got a quarterback sect. This is dicey Dan standing right in the back line of his end zone If he steps out of bounds, that's the safety. Normally a punter stands 15 yards back. In this case, he's only got 11 to work with. Here comes the putt, and it's a great one by Barry Phillips calling for a fair catch, and he makes it at his own 49 yard line. Jordan Barry could not have done that any better considering the circumstances of 49 Yard punt with excellent hang time. One step punch. He only took one step and boomed. It usually punish. Take two. He realized because, as you said, Dan, it was compressed. The only had 11 yards to work with instead of 15 1 step, get it out of there, and he drilled him. With Evan McPherson on the roster if the Bengals can pick up one first down there in field goal range as they start from their own 49 yard line. Burrow in the gun Nixon to his right. Double tight ends. Don't make that two receivers to the right and T. Higgins out to the left borough shifts to the quarterbacks left. They run it up the middle, Joe Makes it down to about the 47 yard line had to do a little. High, stepping near the line of scrimmage to avoid some contact. And then Mackenzie Alexander, the former Bengal made the stop at the 47 4 yard pickup. Eric Kendricks, the linebacker came downhill. He's one because the penetration that made Joe Mixon have to jump step Kendricks came downhill. Couldn't quite make the tackle. But he made Joe Mixon per tail is downhill momentum and have to jump cut to his right hardened tape. And Mike Thomas check in his wide receivers for Cincinnati, Joe Burrow under center on second and six in Vikings territory. First time either team has had it in the opponent's territory. It's a stretch run right for Joe Mixon trying to get to the sideline and dumped by Kendricks at the 45.

"Nickel and dime situations with the lack of depth that defensive back I think they have at least three, maybe four good defensive acts depending on how much Cam Sutton makes it jump from Good Reserve, two solid starter at one corner. And that's the question. I mean, you know, might be one of these guys who gets exposed with the more playing time and the more responsibility he has, But I do like him as player Hayden still good and make it Fitzpatrick's excellent, relevant as capable as a starting safety. But then, after that they have Tried a number of different ways to figure out how to replace Mike Hilton. As the Nickelback the slot corner. However, you want to refer to it and they have found on everyone so far in the off season, they're probably going to have to default to sudden bumping inside from the boundary corner to play. Um this lot position and replace Hilton that way and then have somebody else play as the fifth defensive back When they go to dime they might rely on train. Norwood, who's a smart kid. I just don't know how incredibly athletic he is. Or is not to be almost a third safety in the dime, and he's 1/7 round rookie out of Oklahoma like him. Good special teams. Guy Heady might be Biting off more than he can chew to actually jump in there and play against the bills, though, so if you go to the nickel and the dime, the secondary gets thin. It will be interesting to see how Joe Schobert and Devin Busch we've in As two guys paired together for the first time in game one talent there to be sure, Let's see how they communicate when they're nickel situations. To my wonder What you think is successful season for Pittsburgh would look like or even like what Pittsburgh fans would think that looks like because from my seat like I would think all right if the Steelers make the playoffs, that's a pretty good result for the team that they have on the field..

"Coming at you with the report that the pittsburgh steelers have made a trade going into the twenty twenty one regular season. It is friday. September third when this trade is being reported. It was first reported by. Nfl networks in rappaport. the steelers are acquiring cornerback. A kello witherspoon. If i said his first name correct from the seattle seahawks now witherspoon has not played in the regular season with the seahawks. All he did was was signed with them in the off season and he played in a couple of preseason games this year for them and this is an before being traded to the steelers. We do not know exactly what the trade entails. We don't know what the steelers have given up. There is one thing that we actually do know that the steelers are given up their likely. Losing what would be projected fifth round compensatory draft pick from from this year because when you trade for a player that is that is a compensatory free agent that signed with someone else but you you get them via trade than they count into the formula. That's one one factor that that that's coming in. Let's just look at a little bit of what we know about witherspoon coming in. He spent four years with the san francisco forty niners. He was drafted by them in two thousand seventeen in the third round his rookie season. He wasn't active for the first four games but then came on came in and played for three games before starting the rest of the games for the rest of the regular season in two thousand eighteen. He actually played in fourteen games. Starting twelve of them but ended the season on injured review on injured reserve with a sprained knee and in two thousand nineteen he Witherspoon was actually inactive for a stretch during the middle of the regular season and in two thousand twenty. He missed a couple of games early on with a with a hamstring injury and then was inactive for three games in the middle of the season. Now those three games in the middle of the season was was basically due to what coach shanahan was saying a need for someone who contributed more on special teams to be to be active on game. Day that's he was a game day inactive for three weeks in there but then came back and played well so much so that if you are into pro football focus scores witherspoon actually had an eighty point two overall score and twenty twenty which was in the top five of quarterbacks last year and a great coverage score he is a player that has some experience playing inside also experienced playing outside. Not sure exactly what the steelers think they're going to be doing. They're much more of a coverage guy than someone who's like a a run defender or pass rush specialist. Didn't i mean. I think he had in his four year career. He's he's only had according to pf three plays where he where he rushed the passer. So that's that's not much so it's not like he's coming in to where he would be more like a mike hilton type of corner. Let's talk salary for a moment because granted it still. It's one o'clock on friday september. Third when this podcast is being recorded so we don't know the details yet but here's the salary implem- implications that we would see so far with the steelers because witherspoon signed a one year deal for four million dollars but two point five million was given as a signing bonus with at one point five million dollar base salary in a in a typical move. The team had signed him. They would be on on the books with a salary. Cap everything with that signing bonus. The only way that doesn't happen is if it's part of the deal for example when the steelers traded for for joe schober part of the deal was that the jaguars paid basically half his salary. I mean exactly half a salary when you everything into into consideration so therefore he counted much less for the steelers in the salary cap especially after they did a did a restructure. What's going on here. It all depends on the deal that it works. That they work out with the seahawks. If the steelers don't take on any of that signing bonus then you're talking one point five million dollar salary cap hit for twenty twenty one and he's also a free agent at the end of the year unless he works out a longer deal with the steelers. Don't know if that's something they would do now before the season but at the same time if he's also a player that that laughed after this year he would be a compensatory loss for the following. Year is is how that would go so. That's a little bit of what we know. Let me give you some stats. I'm gonna do my best to try to try to give you some of these some of these stats for for a kilo witherspoon. He plays played in forty seven regular season games. He started thirty three. Yes four career interceptions. Two of them came in his rookie year. He had one last year a nas at one in two thousand eighteen. That he returned for touchdown doesn't have any sacks. One hundred seventeen tackles in four seasons according to pro football reference and the the most he had was thirty seven in any one season. If you look at the at the advanced statistics when you're talking passing and coverage in twenty twenty he was targeted thirty. Two times with nineteen completions. That's a fifty nine point. Four percent completion rate. And that's actually the highest in the last three years because pro football reference only goes back three years with their with their advanced statistics because he was fifty five point. One completion percentage in two thousand eighteen fifty six point six and twenty thousand nine hundred fifty nine point. Four in twenty twenty so under sixty percent off three years did surrender was credited with surrounding touchdowns according to pro football reference only two and twenty twenty six and twenty nine thousand nine and seven and twenty eighteen The the biggest thing is. I was trying to find a little bit more. Pass pass defense. In his past defense he has twenty four passes defense in his four years. If you look some of these stats differ a little bit when you look at other places. Because they're all subjective and not official by the nfl if you look at Pro football focus and what they had. They had him surrendering three touchdowns last season on a second. I'm reading it backwards. I was. I was looking at the years in the wrong order. It was to last year and seven the year before so exactly how the steelers are going to implement him into in coverage will be interesting. He did not line up much in the slot last year. He only had three snaps in the slot but he had twenty snaps in twenty nineteen in two thousand eighteen. Each In in in the slot position just based on pro football focuses alignment that they had him credited for their so more than.

"That means greg lloyd or kevin green or one of your inside live and they've got to go cover that guy right. That linebacker has to go cover that wide receiver. We'll teams smart and started attacking those matchups and so team started using more defensive backs you would take out a linebacker put in a defensive back but that nickelback role is really an outside linebacker. That's all it is you've just in zone. Coverage isn't a lot of defenses. They act exactly like normally a sam linebacker. The strong side linebacker actually just becomes a defensive back so they are playing that role and it's important to note that because teams quickly figured out that if you have a really small fast guy in that nickel defender role and i can shift my you know. I can pull lineman. I can do stuff to get a running back. Fullback tight end or an offensive lineman blocking that player. Well that's just an easy win. That's an easy win for the offense and we can run all over you team start running out of three wide. Receiver sets much more as they learn. Hey if guys are gonna counter and take out that big linebacker and put in a small shifty fast guy will then we're going to run out them and that's how you get a player like a mike hilton. Mike healton after call him a slot linebacker because he played like a linebacker. And that's key because it is a linebacker role. The the run defense angles. The the nickelback is usually called an alley defender there and outside force player. They have to keep contain on a lot of runs to stop the run from getting outside trying shield force it inside or the two linebackers can get to it. Well mike was great at that because he would take on tight ends he would take on fullbacks he could take on a tight end. He can put even took on pulling offensive lineman they would. It would pull a guard you know across to try and block mike and mike with throw himself into that guard hard enough to stop that guards momentum despite the fact that the guard had seven eight inches and one hundred pounds or more they were just that much bigger than mike helton but he would take them and you have to be able to if you think about it. Mike hilton was smaller. Whenever they did a running play at my hilton he was smaller than the player blocking him and he was smaller than the player running at him with the ball. He was smaller than both of them and in his job to defend that. So so you understand. The the slot defender the nickelback the primary slot defender. That is a tough position. That is a very tough position to play. And the guys who can be that small and that physical while still being able to cover wide receivers are rare. Mike hilton wasn't the greatest coverage but there aren't many people that can be better than he was in coverage as good as he was in the run game and also bring glitzy. And that's the last part i wanna talk about. This is not normally a requirement to play the nickel position. But this is something the steelers really light and brings a lot of value to their defense when it works. Well a nickel blitz is incredibly hard to defect simply because that player is wide. They're far off the line off outside of the lineman so have a very different angle to defend that an offensive lineman has to get outside and back really fast and they're bigger guys right there. A bigger guy. Mike hilton one of his strengths. In blitzing was timing up. The snap count to where when the quarterback would look down to to prepare to receive the ball nowadays just doing fake calls calling plays and stuff at that point. Mike hilton still lined up right over the wide receiver when that quarterback would look down to receive the snap. Because obviously he's got a focus on the ball if you if you don't catch the ball on us on a shotgun snap the play's dead. We've seen that. We i mean. I don't need to bring up traumatizing. Memories for every steeler fan from this past winter. I don't need to bring that up but we know how bad it is. When a quarterback can't catch a shotgun snap so the quarterback is focusing on the ball once he puts his head down and focuses on the ball. Mike hilton would go from looking like he is covering that receiver to being ready to blitz. He would come right up on the line changes angle. And he's right there ready to blitz and attack the quarterback the offensive lineman can see it with a quarterback. Doesn't he asked to take the snap. Like e look down in the ball is about to come and my children with time it up boom and then he's coming and it would really cause trouble for offenses. Now one of the ways. You can deal with that. Is you have your running. Back block the nickelback. We're running back. Scott forty pounds on my hilton. You can block the steelers under keith butler. Weaponized that by using. What what i've called on the show before hug blitzing hug blitz is like a green dog blitzer some other things but basically if you're on the running back in the running backstays in the block. Now you're now. You just rushed the quarterback right. The steelers do an more advanced version of that called hug. Bulleting where at the snap. A linebacker in man coverage on a running back is attacking. They are running coming forward in their coming forward. Quick while they're coming forward they're running straight at that running back so if it's a run play. Well yeah you wanna run right at the running back. That's your dude. You want to tackle him. If it is a passing play in the in the running back as a blocker. He's already in there right. You've already taken away. The advantage of having an extra guy blocking by having basically a blitzing linebacker coming just simply add that running back to start and they can adjust in rush off of that. You lose the man advantage because the linebacker ads in if the hard part in hug blitzing is if that running back is doing a route is sliding out slipping out of the pocket and is a receiver that linebacker has to then veer off and cover them. It's something roberts. Blaine actually was really good at last season. It was something he did. Well when he was matched up on running-backs those hug blitz. Meant that when mike hit when you thought my children was coming in the quarterback would tell his his running back. Hey don't run your out. Stay in and protect me. I think mike helton's coming will now. You've got another linebacker. We still have a man advantage. It's just the inside linebacker instead of mike hilton. Your you still have the advantage. And they're still another person in there and the offense is lost a receiver. So the one guy you have in zone and the other guy. Their jobs are slightly easier. The more the more people are in the blocks. And you still having you still have a number advantage on the blitz. That's an advantage for the defense. Mike hilton was a big part of that. Because of how hard. It is for an offensive lineman to block in nickel blitz and how much easier it is to have a tight end or running back account for that. It's just that much easier. It more sense and the hug bullets is took advantage of that now. Teams don't always use slot receivers out of as a wide receiver. It's not always a wide receiver. Manning that spot in the offense sometimes a team will come out with a two tight end set with one running back and only two wide receivers but then they send a tight end outside out wide and put a wide receiver in the slot. Plays like that in other situations. Were running backs. Go out into the is typical to end up with a linebacker covering in the slot. The steelers do that quite a bit again famously. In the in the wild card..

"Brennan jones on baseball next. Hey what's up this is. Espn fifteen thirty good afternoon. I'm all egger sound distracted. Senator tweet about the our tony with his last frigging camp through two thousand twenty one. You can follow me on twitter at my allegra. I only had like ten minutes to do this during brennaman and jones on walbrook enthralled by the replay challenge in the little league game Let's see here. You're going to hear david bell talk about what's happening tonight. Which is cast honest back. You res- is playing shortstop. God help us. Because that was the case for the first few weeks of the season and it was an unmitigated disaster and offensively. He's having a terrible year. You've got a guy. In louisville and jose barreiro who frankly is deserving of a chance to play. He can more than hold his own defensively. And he's been great with the bad this year. Two homers last night kyle farmer has offensively at least turned into a pumpkin a little bit. He is reliable. There's a place for him on this team. He's done a nice job. he play thousand positions. Want farmer on the team. If you are using kyle farmer's choice between kyle farmer and you heinous juarez and jose barreiro. What's the best option and right now. It doesn't feel like the answer is either suarez or farmer quite frankly. So you'll hear david bell on that topic because gino is playing short tonight coming up here in just about ten minutes. The bengals play tomorrow game against the tampa bay buccaneers. This is sort of cliche but honestly when you are a team like the bengals in which tony has said this to me a couple of different times that the unknowns outweigh the knowns and they do i mean i think we're all comfortable with joe borough. We're all comfortable with the wide receivers beyond that. I'm hopeful for a lot of spots on this team. There's a lot that i don't know i am feeling better and better about riley reef and joan williams. I think behind a good offensive line. Joe mixing can be really productive. I think with a more creative more diverse offense joe. Mixon's talents can can finally be exploited to the extent that we all hope but there's so many unknowns that is a preseason game going to give definitive answers no could. They provide some clues. Could they provide some insights into what the answers may be. Yeah i think so. And specifically because of the quality of this opponent. Offensively bruce arians. It seems to me. I'm watching from afar. The coach of the buccaneers. It feels like he's trying to jump start his team a little bit here and he has said the last week our offense has been miserable and practice. I'm gonna play everybody. I'm gonna play brady. I'm gonna play my starters. I'm gonna play my main dudes and it kind of feels to me like to a degree. He's trying to jog them out of a sense of complacency after winning the championship last year. So what that means for the bengals is you are going to get a good offensive line. All right big question for this team is the pass rush get better. Those answers can be provided by new editions on the outside for a hendrickson draft choices. Like joseph asai but also what they're trying to do on the inside and we're not gonna see larry ogan jobe tomorrow all accounts. He's had a marvelous camp but it's pretty good test for a unit that is under the microscope this year. It's a wide receiver group. That is really damn good can do a lot of different things and you might not get tampa bay's best for a long stretch of time. Let's face it. The secondary for this team at least corners are represent a huge question. Mark right you possibly can have three corners that start week one. That didn't play for this team last year. One of whom didn't play a snap in two thousand twenty so we start to get some answers. The good news. Is you heard tony. Talk about this. Twenty minutes ago by a church. Adobe mike hilton so far have by all accounts had a very very good camp. Let's see them get thrown to the wolves against tampa bay team. That obviously has some very good pass. Catchers big question about this team has been linebacker for a long time to what degree is giovanni. Bernard gonna get a chance to show buccaneers fans. What we know he can do which is make plays in space. I don't know but when he's given the ball in space. Let's see if the bengals linebacker can make a tackle. I think. Logan wilson as a chance to be really really good but you talk about a position where they just kind of said this year. You know what we're good. We got so much other stuff to fix. We're gonna arrest with who who have probably going to have to linebackers on the field at any given time. Let's see if these guys can make a in space offensively. This is maybe the biggest story tomorrow night. How do things unfold at right guard both in terms of deployment of playing time but also how effective each guy is. I don't get the sense. That michael jordan is at the top of the depth chart because he's wowing people it feels like. He's at the top of the depth chart because neither xavier so othello or more importantly jackson carmen have grabbed the starting gig jackson. Carmen who thus far by many accounts has not had a great camp is get his first taste of nfl action. Tomorrow we have for the most part heard can't dispatches we've seen the first depth chart we've gotten a sense of who's gotten the most snaps tomorrow night we get a chance to watch things unfold against another. Nfl team and you know. Look let's face it for as much as we've talked about jim. As the two thousand twenty one bengals draft choice that a lot of the thinking revolved around was always going to be the guy. They took to be the first offensive lineman taken by them in this draft then ends up. Being jackson carbon. Ken he play week one. Can he helped this year. Does he look physically overwhelmed does do we just dismiss the idea of him helping this team early in the season based on what we see one preseason game or do all of the things that have been said and written about him during practice fade away because he has a strong showing tomorrow night. I don't know the answer. I can't wait to find out starting tomorrow evening on a more macro level. This sounds pretty obvious. And it sounds pretty simple and i will admit to you that i don't have a like a rolodex or catalog of emotions that i have felt after preseason games over the last few years and obviously we didn't have any preseason games last year but it has been awhile since i walked away from a preseason game and thought the bengals that was pretty pretty. Well organized pretty thorough. Pretty good preseason effort none of us make a big deal about results of games in the preseason. But you know what. I want to do on on saturday night. Walk away from that game going. Yeah that team passed the eye test. That team didn't look discombobulated. They looked well organized. They looked. Well coached. That is a subjective thing and that that also may involve players. Who have no chance of playing for this team this season. You might do that and still think this team is gonna stink. You might not do that and still think the team has got a chance to be pretty good but i just. I'd like to walk away from for a season that is is going to be. I think that that go a long way. Toward determining things like zach. Taylor's future and how we feel about the direction this club moving forward. It would be nice to walk away from tomorrow night just feeling like you know what that was a pretty good performance. Pretty good performance doesn't mean they.

"But yeah. I mean it's kind of vague that's exciting. That's that's like coach tomlin one. Oh one right there. Well he doesn't have to say anything about injuries deger specific as he wants. Yeah maybe it was just me that. I thought that that was interesting. That it wasn't say none. I mean you would imply that. He was talking about an injury but he doesn't really say it's interesting balaj ballots. Whatever you wanna call. I think i have him on the list. Because i think he's going to be something to watch. He's yeah everyone's been talking about him since mandatory minicamp. Let's go to defense brian. He got on defense to watch buddy. Johnson i wanna see what this guy has right. Yeah absolutely i mean he. He'll probably play the entire second half so you'll see a lot. I want to see him too. That's a given. What about you dave defender. Can i give you two well. We're gonna go around again but you can cut say too. I said this on the scarborough show. This is what i want to see. I want to see cam sutton. And james pierre as the to outside corners. Both of them out there at the same time to get more of a sample size. And then i'd like to see him. Switzerland's that's what. I'd like to see see them each work each side to of that of of just seeing what you have in your in your starting who could be starting outside corner because why not. I mean if you're saying they're both going for the for the same position doesn't mean that you have to leave one of them on the on the bench while the other ones out there because you wanna both in that same side of the field. I'd like to see both out there at the same time and just kind of see how things work. So that's why like to look at now. I had james my list for sure and someone that i wanna see. But i don't know. Did he practice. The antoine brooks junior practice today. Dave i did not have him as if someone not practicing that i can remember. I'd have to double check here. He's one that if he's playing. I really want to see what he can do because he deb. That hit me like a ton of bricks. When i found out that he was getting the first shot at mike hilton his job. In the nicholas. What antoine brooks junior reportedly. He's lost weight he's improved. His athlete is his speed his agility. He's a lot lighter I wanna see what antoine junior do people forget. This guy didn't even make the team last season at a camp. He was cut signed to the practice. Squad promoted unstuck. So i'm gonna say anton books junior brian. Do you have anyone else on the defense side. The football you're looking forward to seeing quincy rochet hugh from the year. I wanna see this guy. I think he's a dynamic. Pass rusher and i think he's the kind of guy that could have multiple sacks in the preseason. I mean granted. He might be he might be the yuji three with just a lot of action because you three had a lot of a lot of sacks and a lot of tackles that year but he was laying a good bit of the two thousand nineteen preseason. I would think hugh gets a lot of actions. Well has anyone heard. I did say that bob route liberal pumped up cue from the you a little bit in a post practice pros camp video. I have not heard a thing about him. Otherwise anyone anything. Because they're all focused on ingram and highsmith remind get it. I've heard more about Who's the guy that ah jones jamir jamir and i have quincy rochet. It's just weird. That's all i'm sentences. Weird latinos picks. You wonder if the steelers are trying to not make him be noticed as much. Because you know you've got to remember this is the preseason goes on some of these guys at the steelers think are but they don't think they have room for they might wanna not highlight so much in order to get them on the practice would see i look at it. See my conspiracy theorist mind goes the other way i see bob lab arreola as a steelers employees like we drafted this kid. Someone's got to say something good for us. We're going to look like a bunch of idiots of likely iowa. Go ahead dave's did you have another one. I mean i said to before. I could save more honestly. I would like to see you know. I think miles gilbert is gonna get to play an awful lot of strong safety. He's been getting a lot of work with the ones because we found out yesterday that we know before the throw. Edmunds had had surgery obstacle. I am so we know that now that that's why kill has been getting a lot there and which is interesting because i don't know if he's a guy that they even considered for that slot position but because he's playing in place of edmonds. He hasn't had the chance yet if you know what i mean. It's really interesting. Because you brought that up about brooks. It sounds like i wonder if they're not. They might not even want to run the same player in the slot all the time. Because are they wanting to do use the slot as a mike hilton type slots or they actually wanted to use the slot as more of a coverage slot not more like a slot backer as some people have said. I mean if you want someone that's more that's more like a linebacker can blitz help with the run and can can take the short acting routes that makes sense that that they would look for. Someone like antoine brooks junior. But i just want to have an idea of who was. You could possibly see their well. That's one of the person on my list. Is arthur let of like the forgotten free agent acquisition. No one talks about arthur maleta. I i kind of really started to enjoy what he brings to the table at least on paper on film on jeffrey benedict did is film room breakdown when they signed him. What is arthur millette. Bring to the steelers defense. You can google that and you'll see his article look it up. He breaks down the film when he was with the new york jets. He could play the slot. He can play safety very versatile. And i heard mega fitzpatrick talking about in the other day after practice saying that they meaning brooks and millette are two different completely different players that bring completely different components to depositions. Dave i agree with you. I wouldn't be shocked if they have. I guess you wanna call the big nickel and a small nickel where this sly defenders do. Different things do different things. Okay all right very good any anyone else that we haven't mentioned that you're looking for scenes. I don't know some someone from peter gallery. I was trying to find the mute. Can and we're back to control your kids brian. All right anyone else. You're excited to see play on thursday. Could be offense defense yoohoo. I'm going to say go ahead. No just go. And i'm special teams. Let him go. Yeah.

"In case your first time listening we've had a lot of people join us during the season last year in twenty twenty one that weren't with us during training camp. If you're one of those people just understand the training camp recap is really just a chance for me to let you know what's going on a practice. These will only be happening when the steelers actually practice. Obviously there's not gonna be news when they have the day off in the steelers. Were back on the field for the very first time. They reported on wednesday. Thursday was their very first time at practice. And it wasn't saint vincent college it wasn't latrobe. Pa but there was a lot of news happening amongst the pittsburgh steelers. And i'm going to break it down for you in simple terms is what you need to know The steelers after practice did have three three people. I should say three very important. People available for in-person media. It was actually the first time since two thousand nineteen you know. Mike tomlin stood in front of reporters. They weren't that close but he stood in front of reporters. So mike tomlin office. He spoke to ben. Rothlisberger and t. j. watt. Were the three people that spoke after practice on thursday so a couple of things of note The first thing that came that was really noticeable for me. Was that This mike tomlin said the kendrick green. Everyone's thinking could this guy be the center for the steelers in week. One what he said he is going to be the starter at center at least for week. One of the preseason. He also said the big. Dan more could start at tackle. I'm not sure if it was left to right tackle. But he did say the kendra kendrick green but dan more could be starting as well And then you got a feel for already early in training camp. There were some that were getting into like kendra green guy first team snaps. He dealt with ben rothlisberger on thursday rothlisberger said. Although it's not pouncey he said that Kendrick green communicated did all the calls. They didn't fumble a snap. So good i start for kendrick green but then also antoine brooks junior six round draft pick at a twenty and the twenty twenty draft out of maryland. You know how. Mike tomlin loves disturbs. He intercepted rothlisberger from the slot and rothlisberger. He said quote. He's filling mike hilton shoes. Who's been a rock on that defense for him to make that play. I was happy for him. And then also jim wechsel of twenty four seven. Sports said rothlisberger appeared frustrated by sensational diving interception by slot corner. Antoine brooks dens. Eddie was just amazed and was complimenting. Mike hilton's heir apparent a larkin change in the course of a preseason in training camp folks but it seems like the steelers are giving that first shot at that slot cornerback to antoine brooks junior. Some people thought it might be james pierre. Some people thought it might be someone like marcus allen no antoine brooks junior is getting the first look and he is seems to be making the most out of its keep that a minds to file it away. It's only day one. I don't wanna make too much video out of this but still something. No worthy also tj. Watts new deal might. Tom was asked about that. And he said quote. I'm sure that process will run. Its course and we'll have something to announce That's interesting. I didn't expect a contract to be done before the season. But maybe it will. Ben rothlisberger took to the podium and he was asked about some of the off season in a narratives supposedly involving his ability and his physique etc and he said quote are things being said about me nationally and then with a smile said well. What's new ben rothlisberger. Understand what's being said about him folks. If you're someone that's sitting there thinking how does not know he knows and he is. Trust me he's motivated to go out and show people that he is still capable of getting the job done. Speaking of rothlisberger a lot of people are wondering will he be able to learn nat canada's offense. It is different. It is complex. No one really knows exactly what it's going to look like rothlisberger certainly does he was asked about how he's learning all the formations. The new verbiage play calls. I mean this guy's going into his eighteenth year in the national football league actually said that his daughter helped him make flash cards and he said quote. There's been some quizzes with a smile. Devon bush if you didn't read the article on behind steel curtain dot com. He was told that he's basically been fully cleared medically with his knee. That he won't be you know. Have any downtime. Before he's able to practice he should be given the green light right away. Zach banner also ahead of schedule. Zero steeler players will be starting camp on the pup list the physically unable to perform list. That is great news for the steelers to not have anyone. That's dealing with a major injury. Early on now kevin and didn't work today. He didn't practice today. Said he's dealing with something that something is not serious enough to put them on the publis. I wouldn't put too much stock into that something. That was interesting. That i thought of it. i was curious. Did the steelers know about vince. Williams thinking about retirement according to mark bali of the athletic. He said it sounds like the steelers. Had no idea that vince williams retiring until yesterday. That's really interesting to me. Really interesting to me. And so Maybe he didn't tell them maybe he didn't know i'm not saying it's his fault. I'm not saying that anyone is to blame but very interesting news there. If the steelers had no clue that vince williams was about to hang it. Up tomlin. Mike tomlin was asked about the new offense of line in he did not Splice words he said quote. We don't have the bar set too high. We were last in the league in rushing. We have nowhere to go but up with certain aspects of that. Yeah i hope that that's the way they view it as they can only go up but at the same time we hope that they they don't just move up a little bit. They actually thrive. That's that's the hope that is the hope. And then lastly in like. I said there wasn't a ton of news coming out of this first day of camp There are some steelers that will be wearing new numbers. Some people like the jersey. Some people want to go out and buy a bunch of jersey. so in case you're interested like new. Newly-acquired melvin ingram. Outside linebacker will wear number eight number eight this is. He's taking advantage that new. Nfl rule where linebackers are allowed to wear single digit numbers. He wore number. Eight trade turner. But we're never fifty one. That's really weird for me. When i think fifty one i think james farrior But still fifty one and yeah a buddy johnson. The rookie from texas am fourth round. Pick is also wearing number fifty one He's on the other side so something's gonna give but honestly if the rookie makes the team he will probably not be too attached to that number if trae turner wants it. We'll keep it that way. Kicker sam sloman. Who is basically a camp unless chris boswell gets hurt is gonna wear sixteen and also newly acquired offense attack. Oh chaz green is wearing number seventy four so for all you jersey fans out there. There's your jersey fixing all those new numbers the pittsburgh steelers. I wanna make this very clear. The pittsburgh steelers have not released. That i've seen any type of schedule for training camp when they're at latrobe. There is a clear cut. The players are working out this day this day off this day this day this day. Preseason game i have not seen anything like that. So i wanna be able to say. Check me tomorrow. For another training camp recap but if they give him the day off and there won't be a training camp recap so your best bet is to check out behind.

"Of of what happened here. Yeah absolutely and i will tell you that the n. Actually thought they were trying to make him make for sam to make the decision for them I surprised on one hand But not because they did eventually do what i thought they would do. but You know they knew they had to do something with that salary. Cap hit but wanting Feeling that they were in position to move on from him With all the changes they were make gang or thought they were going to have to make a turns out some of those they didn't I'm certainly not surprised that he's back. I expected that all along. But i have to admit that i was a little surprised that there was some hesitation. I always thought it would be. Ben would go out on ben's terms and nobody else is in for a while. It looked like it looked like it wasn't going to be on his terms. What did you make their off-season in pittsburgh. Well the funny thing is is. They fought a lot of the changes. Were going to be on offense and not on defense. They thought you know maybe ben was going to be gone. They knew they were going to move on from james conner. They thought you to sniff Shuster would be gone. They knew markey's pouncey was going to retire. And of course that happened and did move on from james connor but the funny thing is is a lot of their changes. Dan ended up being on defense. They lost three starters They kind of anticipated that might happen with duprey. And maybe even Mike hilton but now you throw in retirement. Yesterday of vince williams. You know a guy that they had released after season decided to bring back just to kind of plug that hole for one more year and then he retires on them. So i think their offense Yeah there's a lot of changes. They weren't counting on david decastro moving on from him. That was injury related So the changes on the offensive line. They kinda somewhat knew that was going to happen. But they didn't plan on castro so some of those changes they counted on sunday. Didn't i think they're better offensively. I think there are a little a little less Ferocious on defense. Let me get a quick hit on the other teams in the division. Let's start with the bengals. What do you expect well. Until they show that they can move up to be a five hundred ballclub. I'll wait and see it's kind of like the browns two years ago. The browns at the show me they could do it again and they did But i i mean. I like joe borough. I think he's going to be fantastic quarterback. I hated to see the injury last year. Hate to see that happen to any kind of promising young star. I think they'll be better. But i mean i think. The browns are legit and ravens. The ravens the ravens are very much like steelers. Even when you don't think they're going to be very good they're good that's just that's a salute our organization. But there's no reason to think look. I'm not going to sit here and pronounce. The steelers are going to super bowl. But as i tell everybody. Dan i mean who would have thought they'd start eleven and last year who thought they'd go twelve and four and win the division. I can tell you not too. "I would read a bunch of his film. Melvin anger is just an edge. Rusher he lines up the interior sometimes on passing down. They've used him as an off all linebacker and he's even had an interception in doing that so that's nothing you'd ask him to do. Like every player twenty snaps the game. But you could rotate him in there and help out in that position he could be part of the answer. And all of that's going to be determined over the next couple of weeks of camp Leading into the hall of fame. Game i think. Then that's when the then we'll see the steelers. Okay who's out there who needs to make a move you know what other team what are other teams desperate for we saw cam acres. He's he's out for the season with achilles injury. People were speckling osceola. Should send betty smell to the rams. There might be a deal like that. In in a whole bunch of other position there might be a team. That's like hey we'll give you such set for jane's washington because our receivers that went down. Those are all things that can play on. That's one thing that i've learned to my time covering and following it studying the steelers don't commit to something or commit to and i did. This is definitely the thing because there's way too many possibilities out there kevin colbert. He keeps all doors open so that he can make the move that he wants to make the pets better organization. All right we got. We got a superstar here. Real quick chris. How do you feel about our defensive backs at this point. Especially at cornerback. I i think steelers. They got a really good situation going on here. A lotta people are sleeping on. 'cause they lost even nelson. They lost mike hilton But this is a. This is a team. I'm higher on joe haden than most people are like. Oh he's gonna fall off that cliff. Joe hayden is not a guy that ever relied on his speed even when he was at his youngest at his best in the league he was a guy that was all about positioning technique. Handwork footwork. Being the smarter guy on the field and winning those battles he still that player. When i see that happen then i'll i'll i'll check it opposite. Okay he's done. But i don't see that happening anytime soon. Four joe joe haden. I actually think he's going to be a guy that can be relied upon Moving moving moving forward. I also see karen sudden. He's a guy that i've been really ecstatic about over the over the past Over the ever since he was a rookie in fact in his rookie season in that same bengals game we. We're talking about a. He took over. Joe haden for a half and had to cover. Aj green and look just fine doing it over the years. He's found ways to make himself valuable. I think he's going to be solid now. One thing that. I keep reminding people about the slot quarterback what about my killed and he did so much i agree. Mike hiltons a favorite people to talk to in the locker room because he was very open. He talked about a lot of technique yet great instincts. He understands football he's a very high q. Are very high. Iq when it comes to football and life things but With mike don't forget he was an undrafted free agent free agent limit when they brought him in. You know he was a guy that they came in and in camp earned his mainstay. That's what they're expecting to come out of Brown a traynor with a james. Pierre was some of those guys are gonna have to step up this year. I wouldn't be surprised one or two of them. Do and don't forget justin lane still out there fighting for his for his nfl career. So there's gonna be a couple of guys to step up there. And i think what makes this a lot better is knowing that you have a makeup fitzpatrick behind you. Terrell edmonds very solid strong safety despite what many people might say but minkah fitzpatrick when you have the best in football columnist shots playing the deep ball back there you as a cornerback. Feel much more comfortable being aggressive playing your role and making plays. I think this is a lot better than people. Get credit for if i can follow up on that You brought up. James pierre and i state that that I know there is a james pierre hype train running pretty seriously around pittsburgh right now i actually after the after the playoff loss i had to do a film on that game and i was like i don't even know what to write about and i ended up writing an article about james pierre as one of the few bright spots that occurred in that game and since one of the things i've been thinking about is he had so few snaps and the season but when you go through and look at each snap. His film is really good like he did a great job in the limited time he played. I'm used to short sample size being like okay. This person put up good numbers good stats in a short sample size. What how do you deal with analyzing a player who was put up really good film in a short sample size. Does that does that translate. Is that going to say. Hey this guy should be this good next year or are there. Are there things that we have to be cautious about when looking at his film and saying wow this did. This kid is smart. He's a good player. I mean you should always be cautious when looking at a small sample size. If he that peyton hillis will be the greatest running back of all time if you remember him from his browns days. That was quickly short-lived But i will say this jean-pierre the things that i saw about him. Good technique was solid following through on basic cornerback fundamentals In those things that that that chat transition into your future and if he can build on that that solid. I can tell you. I watched this man play in. Minicamp granted no pads football in shorts but he was active the hype that you're hearing about it. I was like i chris. Carter was given a thumbs up behind that hype now my colleague. Tony sereno when. We're on the lockdown steelers. Podcast e believes in the james pierre hype train. He's at the official starter of that. He started months ago and he continues to believe that he's going to be the next rod woodson with the running joke there but i do. I do think that he's going to be a better contributor. That people give him credit for This year what's gonna be. Interesting is a when he comes to camp. How consistent is he does. He maintain how he looked at minicamp. Be when he does get in. The game does he. Stick to those fundamentals as you communicate. Well is he on the same page with everyone else immensely. Does he get lost in the sauce when he starts to get more saps. If you see that all those things start to check the boxes he could end up being like you know what when. Joe hayden's done camp sutton might be the number one and he might be the number two and we have no problem with that and that could be the next you know big story of the steelers like hey guys that ford their way forward like vince williams that you didn't you didn't think that they were gonna be a star on your team are consistent starter for you. Know a better part of a decade. That's what he can work his way into. But we have a long before we go there. I liked the fundamentals i see. I like the understanding of the game. That i see..

"So we'll have to see with with what's going on at the cornerback position our quarterbacks going to be able to throw faster against the steelers in there for they're not going to get those sack and pressure numbers that they would otherwise i don't know but then you also bring back devon bush. I laid this out on a previous episode that when it came to the numb strictly with the numbers when it came to sacks the where the steeler saw the biggest drop off was after the loss of devon bush not not after losing my hidden not in games where they lost buddy pre but where you saw the biggest difference was not having devon bush now seven bush was always there with those other two. So it's just it is what it is but that's the numbers that's the number. So do i think the steelers could improve on their pressures and their sacks and they're and they're hurries and things like that. I think you're going to see higher numbers strictly because of the seventeen game schedule. But what's most important is that you look at those percentages. How're those percentages looking like that. Thirty five point one percent pressuring dad last year. They don't have to improve it. they don't have to go up. Five percent dated from twenty nine hundred. Twenty twenty if they just maintain that that would still be fantastic or even a slight improvement would be wonderful so to me. Looking at the steelers defense is looking at the strength of this team. And so many people were down on the steelers. And they talked about ben rothlisberger and i talked about the offensive line. That talk about this talk about that but really the big thing is the defense and the defense. Every lost that they had was a calculated loss. They knew they couldn't afford bud. Dupree and that's part of the reason why he drafted alex smith the year before and if alex smith wouldn't have had the season that he did last year they probably would've looked for ed rusher higher in this draft to help replace to pre the fact that they didn't tell you that they think that they have something in outside smith and the steelers could have signed mike hilton camp sudden and chose not to. They chose gamespot sutton over mike hilton. The steelers chose to make steven nelson a cap casualty. That's what that was the decision they made so they and they didn't go out and add anyone. Major i mean that like arthur millette in the mix is like one of the additions that they had came from another team but really they didn't go out and make any big splash moods which tells you. They're pretty happy with what they have in general. So i'm i'm still looking at this defense to lead the way for twenty twenty one and i'm really hoping that it's their pressure sacks all those things that they do with getting the quarterback whether they're having to do with the blitz or out the blitz i don't wanna see them having to blitz on every play in order to have any success But it does seem that when they do. They are getting some overall success. And that's what we want to see based on the numbers so those are my geeky numbers for you this week. I hope they weren't too geeky. And i still want to ask if you can sti superfan dad. That's my twitter handle s. t. l. Ourse superfan dad at gmail.com. My email hit me up asking you stats question. i'll give credit for. It will dive into the numbers. And then we'll get into real steelers football for twenty twenty one. So i can't wait to get back to you next week because the steelers might already be meeting at the facility by that time and i know in two weeks already practiced.

"There and i think the bengals to their credit amid a concerted effort. Even win wayne's got her last year. Alexander got hurt that you saw the bad end of variants. If those guys stay healthy you know alexander scam but if wayne stays healthy then i think you're you're you're starting to see the makings of a good defense. So we talked about Jesse basing you talked about the class of safeties zan obviously in the division. There's another young. Safety has also All pros well make a fitzpatrick if you had to go between the two. Which one are you picking. Why i would take. I would take baits. The only reason i would think about fitzpatrick but this has really been used as. It's patrick as nickel Versatility like at alabama. He played in the slot. You saw that a little bit in. Have not seen that in pittsburgh because of mike hilton who now plays for the bengals. He was mostly a deep guy But yet betas bates hasn't made the mistakes of mingka's made right. I think a lot of safety is obviously making the big plays You guys are probably like i. If you're a defensive back like delfo neal is like really fun character but you can't win with delta o.'neil very often right like the easiest pixie gives up ten touchdowns in like it and he was a corner and i i can tolerate that a little bit more on the corners because it's tough. It's hardest position of football. But at safety i just can't i can't tolerate big plays. We'll being allowed like it's just not and bates to bates and simmons or two of those guys don't allow big plays and and that's something that is worth its weight and gold is a safety business. Need attack oughta that getting interceptions and stuff like that. And that's pretty damn good. And that's where adrian emotion that spot i puts up. I put simmons bottom of basements spot. We can't hear you. I'm sorry he knew button. One thing that you were talking about. Two and i just thought it'd be fun to i. Don't know if he had the good info on it like they do now is just like someone that we consider like. Probably the krim de la creme of safeties aid re. Did you have any anything that i could say to my ravens friends like on just comparing like a review today and i know it's is really hard to even compare that because the defense that he was on a lot better than defense that jesse bates's on but did you have anything that statistically i could say. Hey look this is how they compare. Let me look here. Is that read a junior. I'm trying to find that read in my old data it can be like. Yeah i thought every will be a really good one. I mean you know. Like because i tell people like for someone that doesn't watch the bengals right. You're telling them. Like jesse base is one of the best. These you know in football restrained just doesn't understand that and You know and i just was just. I just thought that was like a good person. Kinda like say this is. This is someone i can compare my more though. Because every thing i just looked at ad reads edward read. Jeez so i'm trying to like why you shouldn't coat in public. I'm ed reed so you look at. We only have data back to two thousand sixteen and then jessie bates. Jessie bates is a second. I believe that jessie bates third okay. There we got. Yeah i mean so ed read in two thousand nine. Got a full win above replacements. I mean there's actually. I believe there's a great statistic on read two thousand and ten edry led the nfl interceptions despite playing in only ten games. He's the only player in nfl history to lead the nfl. One of the major counting statistics despite missing six or more games in the season like edry live seven. Well sustainability we. We haven't even got that with jesse based like base. I mean is in that one win category to like that. That's the thing like the hard part is read is such a different player than bates because the bates is doing So like i look at. I look at ad reads. Like i look at ed. Reads like he had Six career sacks. ceo is moore. He wasn't free safety but he was also blitzer right in like and bates more of like a really solid free safety but look. We're really early in his career right like he started in two thousand eighteen and like so. We're still relatively early on but like as far as value is concerned He is he is like. Let's say a ten percent within that situation like he's very he's a very good player. Ed read to me is the best safety of all time in that category. But but but thinking about it. But but like just just putting it in and i love that metric that you're using where you're just saying like that's what i focus a lot too or is like impact players in how much does like a lot of people put a lot of stock in in players or whatever in a lot of times. I'm like yeah that guy's pretty good but he doesn't change your record at the end of the year. I love the fact that when you go until you say like yeah. Jessie bates gets you one more win. Just like i always talk about like joe borough. If i'm coaching the team gets the bengals six wins. You know like i don't know what. Pf says about it but six wins like joe like afford that. Yes speaking of joe borough. That's that's one question. I have for you because we talk with other fans around the league. I have another show the afc north talk. That i also do. And we talk about joe borough out and a lot of browns fans are ranking baker. Mayfield currently over joe borough. Where do you project. Oh borough for like next season as he in your top ten top. Fifteen top twenty. Where would you project him in. We're waking third leg. So i have him in a third two year with a bunch of guys i think could go either way and i include like this. It's tough because you have to. It's not apples to apples. To put him in the same conversation as tannahill and cousins and Stafford guys that are making thirty million. Plus because i would never choose to pay those guys because it just makes it all the stuff. We're talking about all the cool things the bengals get to do all the great things that she's got to do when the homes is rookie deal. You can't do in your quarterback makes so much money that that's that's like that that they questioned in the nfl is if you get a quarterback on a rookie deal. Can you get to a super bowl before he gets before he gets paid because after that it just gets hard right. We see what happened when we see what happened to goff. And i think borough is currently in that class. Which when you're making a rookie. Salary is good enough right. And i think the same things about baker baker got the browns the second round of the playoffs last year. I think the same thing about like. I think lamar is an interesting one. Because it's so hard to value his rushing but he he again is one of those where it's like. If lamar doesn't improve as a passer in two thousand and twenty one. Do you pay him. Forty million dollars a year because that that ravens team has you sixty seven percent of their cap on defense right because they know that the best way to use a quarterback who's brilliant at running..

"It's anthony because with the orange. Bike insider bengals podcasts. It feels like it has been a year and a day. Since i have taken the area and or we've talked and bengals with you and i guess i should start off with a little bit of an apology on that front. Because we had a great show lined up for alaska last wednesday and i unfortunately had a little bit of a sudden in freak injury. Occur to me on that day So i apologize. We did not take the apologize. It's been awhile since we have not taken the air. I'm still recovering from that. Still trying to find out more about what happened with me personally but At any at any rate i You know just trying to hang in there a little bit in and work through it. All about the bengals about mandatory minicamp and all kinds of different things going on with the cincinnati bengals with the afc north with the rest of the nfl. There's a lot of news to get to. it's been an entire week. i can't even can't even believe it. It's been an entire week before we get to the news. I want to let you know aside from this show. We've got a big show plan for tomorrow. We have lyndsey patterson prominent espn espn prominent cincinnati sports media member and You see her all over the place. Bengals beat podcast. Cincinnati inquirer all kinds of different places. So we are excited to have her on the program and talk with her about the sights and sounds from. Ota's mandatory mini camp and everything. So we've got that show and then we will be doing listener. Questions live where we answer your questions live on the air on friday so join us for that submit some questions beforehand and have yours answered on the air. Let's start were. Here's here's what we're gonna do. We're going to start with the kind of general news with the bengals. Some things that have been happening over the past couple of days. And then we'll go into the we'll go into the A slash mandatory mini camp updates and things that we are seeing there. And what you know. What all kinds of different things that are happening there. So let's get it going here. I'm trying to pull up one quick thing before we do in we'll get it set up Let's start if if we can with a little bit of some stuff. That kind of came out yesterday. This is we gotta share this for a variety of reasons. But we want to share this. Because he's one of our personal favorites on this program. He's been on our show. I guess i think it's been three times now. Mike daniels one of our very favorites. Great great guy. He's incredibly personable guy and A good football player. A good solid guy in the bengals locker room This is something through the player's tribune. Where players right kind of their own articles and put it out there. A lot of are long form type articles but this is on cincy. Jungle dot com. Mike daniels calls for juneteenth to be a federal holiday and you can see the entire kind of what his way his take on this growing up and why he thinks it should be a federal holiday. It is june nineteenth Can we won't go through through the full history lesson here. But i do recommend that you read. His article on the players tribune. There's a bit more on cincy. Jungle dot com. Obviously you can see june. nineteenth eighteen. Sixty five is is the date in history but It's it's a really really neat article from a guy who just is incredibly charismatic and has been a great addition to the bengals football team. So we would be remiss if we did not at least highlight this a little bit in in and tell you all about it. If you haven't seen it to go to the player's tribune. Or since he don't go dot com. It's linked the article it to the players tribune in checkout. What mike daniels wrote about juneteenth very very just an important article and a very good read by one of our favorites on the team. The bengals are also working with in case you have not heard. This is since jungle as well working with five coaches in the nfl's minority fellowship program. There is one named mike brown. But not that mike. Brown is our our chief. Jason markham notes in the article on cincy jungled dot com. Coaching interns kenny. Ray augusta's who is a co defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at mckendry university Larry black i believe this is larry black who actually made a stop. Yeah went went on to sign with the bengals college free agent. He was a guy I think it was. He was chronicled in the bengals. Second hard knocks where he had. He was one of those guys that everybody was kind of pulling for. Unfortunately had a pretty bad injury but has gotten into. Coaching is the defensive line coach at the university of toledo. So bengals are bringing him back in this coaching program. Mike brown wide receivers coach at the university of cincinnati Tessa grossman a grad assistant in sports performance coach at illinois state university A graduate of dartmouth college which i believe runs pretty prominent dartmouth college alums in the brown family. So they've got a good A good pulse on things there. Steve langa hopefully. I am pronouncing that correctly. Offensive quality control coach at the university of north texas And then It is bill. Welsh bill walsh fellowship program. Obviously bill walsh spent some time with the cincinnati bengals so the bengals bringing in five Coaching interns. They're pretty cool stuff. There's been a lot of talk. I think the last time. Unfortunately not last wednesday but the wednesday prior we talked about jesse bates in his ranking in this pf system and all this kind of stuff but basically there is some good news here. The bengals secondary overall is listed in the top. Half by of the nfl by pro football. Focus you know. Say what you want about that but that does speak a little bit of volumes. Based on the fact that the bengals lost william jackson top corner they did bring into dobie a ymca. They did they're getting back. Trae wayne's they brought in mike hilton. They added von bell last year. Of course they have jesse bay twos emerging as one of the best defensive players in all of football it the unit ranks fifteenth in the nfl by pro football focus. Ben lindsey of pro. Football focus writes quote a collection of secondary starters that includes trains to dobie a woozy. Mike hilton von bell won't necessarily scare opponents but there aren't many weak links in this group. Either the bengals have done a good job. Solidifying the unit through free agency over the past few offseasons. It kinda reminds me a little bit with the bengals. Have done in the secondary this year. If you go back to like the first few years of the andy dalton era member. They lost jonathan joseph. We'll have more on him and a little bit. They lost johnson joseph to free agency. They got like nate clements. They got terence. Newman they've got reggie nelson. That was in twenty ten and they kind of collected these guys via trades and free agency. And all this kind of stuff and all of a sudden day You know they ended up kind of piecing together through different means a pretty solid secondary. Not one that was absolutely outstanding but one that played pretty. Well under mike zimmer and obviously that's the hope here with this group performing well under lou room. Oh mike zimmer was familiar with quite a few of those guys in that secondary before he got to the bengals in now You know this is kind of a little bit of a similar deal. Flew in a remote guys. He's comfortable with familiar with all that stuff. So pro. football focus has the bengals secondary ranked fifteenth with their rankings..
