"Just wanted to call on that he locked his pod in the pie to the face that was rich eisen for who would have the better record raiders of Broncos. And he also lost my surprise surprise part of the space bet for the Broncos finishing last in the AFC west. Maybe you can let a guest at the Super Bowl deliver that surprise pie. Wow. But Chrissy, have fun with that pie anxiety or pies I so instead of let's ride, how about let's pie and suck it Broncos fans. Oh, wow. Maybe we have a guest pyre. A little extra sauce on that. Didn't we do that with Jim Harbaugh at the Super Bowl? JJ watt did it as well. The Super Bowl, maybe you pick who you want to give you a pie to the face. Well, then JJ Adams was bust Satan. You got to be a little more gentle than that. He could have definitely one of his views from that thing. He could have. Definitely from pie. Yeah. Yeah, if I didn't turn my head, my nose would have absolutely been just shattered. Well, when Michael Irvin did it to me, Mike stiff armed me. And drew blood. It was like, Mike, you just pushed the pie in your face. You don't smash somebody's face. Like, damn, that hurt, Mike. Come on. Yes. And if our previous caller really did his homework and he wants to stick it to me, I did say drew lock was going to throw 19 touchdown pits. So there's a whole collection of three pies. I guess there's three involved. two pi Shakur. Now it's three pods. The pi vector. Look at that. Snuck it in before the break. Final hour on this meat Friday coming up. Oh, more humor like that. Oh no, we want you to stay.

"Been a part of making this happen. I've seen damore smith from the nfl players association. Say that football has a one hundred percent injury rate. That sounds about right. I mean every former player i know has something and if mike golic said most players don't retire. The nfl retires. You most guys. Don't get a peyton manning. john elway press conference. They just get told we're done. We're done what you go away. So you know i mean that's why they also talk about just kind of the mental health aspect of the obesity thing that a lot of guys honestly deal with depression. You've played football. She were eight years old. You're twenty eight and no one wants you to play football anymore. You know when it comes to the health of retired. Nfl players issue that we hear about the most is brain injuries and specifically cd. There was of course that massive settlement a few years ago and a lot of conversations going on about what the nfl is doing to help retired players. So is there a connection between that settlement. The conversation around cte and the creation of this obesity program the none of the direct correlation. But i think the overall theme of we've got to help players with their health is part of that you know the t. thing still remains a tricky thing with the league but i do think the attention from cte in the lack of help players. Were getting all that jim pay to. That definitely is a reason why you're seeing some of the improvements in retirement healthcare which would include what they're doing with obesity and so circling back to michael dean perry. How is his health these days. And how is he taking. Care of. Himself michael dean. He said he's gonna ride his bike. Stationary bike and i'll watcher movement. And i may on our. I may do that twice a day. And he said in essence. You're career is now to be a healthy human being. He said you know you retire. You have a lot of life to live. We that he would love to go out and have two or three burgers couple of milkshakes but he said it's really it's about discipline his snow soft spot sweets anything sweet. He likes though he had you know work on kind of meal. Prep and you know cutting back on the heavier foods in all the pastas that he eight when he was playing with the stakes and the register. And you have to retrieve your brain and trying equal festival so the process of this ongoing process is just like i. Guess the the guy who's attic you know trying to get off drugs so yes tough but still just do you know making sure he gets out moves. Nomex re monitors what he eats and continue to try to help his brother and other players in this people in general understand that there's help and that in essence you don't have to be ashamed if you have a weight issue is he put it to. He thinks it will help. More former players put a premium on their help. He said a lot of players. Put a premium on their careers but not their health. It's pretty introspective in deep. When you think about it they'll do all they can to stay on the field but off that field. They won't do all they can to.

"It is indeed week number one. Mike Golic. You played in this league for a long time. And I know that you know, every game is its own challenge. Every game is its own. You know Hurdle that you gotta climb. What's different about week one. What's different about the opener? What gets the juices flowing so much in week one. Everybody's on one else. Everybody's Oh, no, and it's been documented for so many years that sometimes at least five teams Who didn't make the playoffs year before make the playoffs. So even if all the prognosticators and analysts say you're not going to be very good, you can be because as the season starts going, players know more than anybody kind of where they stack up from a player's perspective that week, one that first full speed contact that first full speed hit. Is that a shock to the system? Well, I think it is today. That is, that's a great point. Because back when I played, you know we went full, gold padded practices back to back. All the time. So By the time we got to the season we were used to hitting now The guys wanted it less now, and that's their right. They wanted to preserve their bodies a little more, and I understand that, But when you go into the first game, you have not taken all the truly full goal hard hits. I think that get your body ready the way it needs to be, And that's why you'll see some sloppy play early and on. Fortunately, some soft tissue tears. That will cause you to miss weeks and then maybe more. If you re injure him. You got 30 seconds. I've done this to every co host. I've hosted this show with week one. Tell me who's going to be in the Super Bowl. Oh, wow. You know, it's It's hard for me to not say that Tampa Bay won't be back there. I know everybody's saying Tampa Bay and Kansas City. Let's go with my Cleveland Browns. Let's go and Cleveland making the Super Bowl against Tampa Bay. Again. That's my heart. Maybe not my head. "Getting ready for the big game tomorrow before that. Let's go to dine who is in houston Hello don at all look the show. Thanks for having me on a couple of questions paul I'm an animal and just want to get your take on. What do you think our chances are not totally night and then also you know Seen a lot of You know rhetoric about the the you know the the the Twelve twelve team expansion For the playoff. And i just haven't seen a good reason. I think it makes more sense now than ever. But i'd like to get your take on that as well. Well i think we were heading down that that road until the oklahoma texas move and then everybody just a threw a fit. Blame the sec. For the price of oil. And we're at we're at a standstill right now. It's there's really no rational way to explain why this is on. Hold other than you have a lot. A petulant people in intercollegiate athletics. Who who. Who have really blown up. What i think was one of the salvations to the sport by by being more inclusive. I'm making it more entertaining as opposed to the same stale thing every year. I agree and i think that would have been the the best designed to get the group of five teams in and Appreciate the and then. What do you think i know. We have a new quarterback and course alabama is the standard And certainly it'll be favored but Just wanna see what you think are changed overnight. I want to see a little more. I i know most. Most people have already ticketed alabama in for the playoffs. I want to see what alabama looks like next week on the road swamp and depending on how they handle that I think it will be easier to frame. The conversation about texas tech sanam will not see anything remotely like alabama has seen at some point I guess. I the arkansas game before alabama trying to remember but I i think has a chance by by the ninth to to develop a little bit better than they did last week. And i think they have a reasonable shot at winning the game. I don't think alabama. We'll we'll we'll see to tougher atmospheres than the swamp and kyle field. And i think it's debatable. Which won't be tougher. Sure i agree. Yeah we do. Play arkansas before we Alabama i also think that the the sec because of the of the The fact that there were all at home this Except for. I mean arkansas. I guess the teams in question tennessee and then south carolina. I think they will put bail at home. I don't know what you think about that. I don't have much doubt will will roll into that game undefeated and highly regarded Don thank you for the call. Thank you very very much. Thank you thank you have you on so we let me just reset where we are right now. Well we're obviously we're Going to be talking next hour with tim. Tebow and sam pittman the head coach at the university of arkansas. Later on i mentioned we will have the athletic director here. Hundred zero check as well as As greg sankey The sec commissioner match joining us now part of the coverage of tomorrow's missouri kentucky game Matt great to have you with us and many are trying to frame this game Maybe rightly so as a as extremely critical in the sec east Kentucky got a lot of tongues wagging at the end of last week's game. Where do you. What do you make out of not only kentucky but the importance of this game walking for this season's purposes at least specific to this year. I do think it can help. Establish what the pecking order my being at east division. Haven't seen a ton from florida. It's an early conference game. Obviously one of the better match ups this week and of course it's to each division teams from a program trajectory standpoint pro early to do any assessment patrick pertains to missouri. But certainly in week ones kentucky got what they wanted from their offensive transition now albeit a non conference opponent one. That doesn't even come. Close to approximating an sec. Rossio like the one they're going to see tomorrow night versus missouri. But i do think that it's a good tone setter at the very least and if not a headstart for which team looks to be the the runner up so to speak in the east division. I think that you could make an argument for missouri. Certainly for kentucky and florida all three of those teams vying for we'll call it second place at this juncture in the season behind georgia. Let's talk about missouri for a second because you know. They have a now veteran quarterback in kufa bachelor What what did you read into first game. And what's this. What's the ceiling for this offense. Well it seems evident that they are definitely trying to get more explosive in the passing game. And that's something that. I think made very clear that you maybe last year. There were a little more conservative at the quarterback position based on the play calling and now they feel if they can open things up a bit more. I think that was evidenced last week. you know. Basically the guy that know kentucky even mitch. We recruited this guy. This guy that we were interested in And we do think that he has the arm to help them win games in the southeastern conflict. The real question will be is over the course of the season In the ground game do have a guy that can be the workforce that they had do. They need a workforce last year larry. Roundtree was among the top running backs in the country. As far as attempts per game part of that was a function of the play calling. So maybe that's mitigate a little bit by being more aggressive run past as a play caller missouri. But the other piece is that do they have the personnel. Could handle or even warrant an emphasis on the ground game looked great last week. But he's he built for that and take the pounding versus they far more physical and imposing defensive. Like the one that kentucky has. I think we'll get a chance to find that out You know tomorrow night. I don't know missouri can afford to try to hold anything back to within. It turns out that he does have the hot hand so to speak the other. Maybe finds out the hard way whether or not he can take a heavy load. And that often. I don't think that's what they want him to be But basically at quarterback. I think this year we'll be able to find out just what he's capable of. I think that's an intention The head coach and offense to play collar ally drink with his see exactly what he has in his quarterback because he's perhaps capable of more than what we saw them in two thousand twenty only have about thirty seconds lepuc. Can i get a quick impression. Jt may not play carson back Could end up being a quarterback what what happens to that offense Jt does not play in this game. Tamar yeah you know. I don't mean to diminish you a big A good program to say the least That said opposite of defense. That should be dominant yet again. This this saturday. I don't know that you should abbreviate anything offensively. I don't necessarily think you get off the bus. Throwing i think george opening game versus clemson. The three passes that said. I don't know that you should be overly concerned by playing offensively to protect your defense if anything They can't really afford to miss any games in developing that passing attack trying to get some semblance of the downfield Throw games something that they did not have the girls who's a quarterback something that they did not have birthday clinton can carson backbeat. You'd like to think that he could. We're out of time. The first hour has come to an end. We have been tibo coming up next. Do you own or rent your home show you do. Fortunately geico makes it easy to bundle your home and car insurance. It's a good thing too. Because.

"On that i would say. Sevice is probably the second best quarterback that i've oh well maybe phone eggs up there but Brandon let me say this. I don't get hung up on rankings. After the first week everyone played a different types of opposition. And i i think goes out tomorrow night and it has a big time game that will change. I mean that that is a huge game and I know we. We haven't talked about yet but we will. Hey thank you so much for the call. Kevin is up next in north carolina. Hello kevin well. Hey paul thanks. You let me visit again Quick quick housekeeping. Check the underside of you're right forearm. You got dirt there. Bruce or something or my hallucinating. You're talking about my right arm. Your right arm yeah. It's just hair That that's all going in fifty different directions okay. My bad was my tv. I thought you had a bruiser picked up dirt somewhere. Anyway i will. I will try to take a bath tomorrow night if i can get it off. Okay brother Do a waxing single. Yeah there you go there. It is do. A waxing thing gets gets a pain you know. Yeah you know. I i've I'm lucky that that's all that's all you're saying about me. I'm hey what what's on your mind. You have another other than me bruising. Easily i just wanted to make you make sure you look well okay So the trickle down effect you know. I'm just blown away Obviously that they. Ac's gotta backfill three now. Maybe two more later. But i'm just blown away I think they took the right four schools But it just doesn't make any sense to me boise state you know. They're a great underdog story. But when you compare them to usf obviously you may have looked at that stadium. Usf plays in the super bowl stadium etcetera and and They're they're they're you know they're travel partners would be. Ucf and academically. They're better and they're all sports. My biggest problem with this league Frankly not memphis another pretty good a possibility but they disagree. They just went out like remember when you were a kid. Your your your your folks who drag you to the cafeteria and the dessert would be first and you'd put apple pie on there and you start piling. They just went out and grab whatever. Look good and there's no continuity to this league. yeah. I know the records are good. These these football programs but you just there has to be something to a league in. The big ten is just a hodgepodge. You got west. Virginia over here you got. Byu eight time zones. Away over here in boise up there and i i trying to say you know. They're trying to put off the inevitable and that's going under and I'll give bob bos be credit for that but as far as the league with any commonality which however. i think. It's a disaster. Hey thanks thanks to call. We must go to a break. We will start bouncing around some of the sites of the big games tomorrow including a stop in knoxville. we'll head to starkville. We have a lot of big games that we have a chance to talk about. We are live in fayetteville. Arkansas listening to paul finebaum show podcast. So first time. Ever on the paul finebaum show and we have an issue with paul. So it's dave pasch here in knoxville tennessee. Just going to tell you about what we learned. Today we spoke with josh hypol- the new head coach here at tennessee. He feels pretty good about his offense. Joe milton michigan. Transfer will start again tomorrow against pitt. Didn't have a great game week one but coach hypol- told us that team believes in joe. Milton and milton also told us that he played all of last year with a torn ligament in his thumb. He had surgery on that thumb after last season and he felt a connection with hypo going back to win. He was being recruited by hypo when he was growing up in. Orlando hypo coach. Ucf but at that point he was at missouri as the offense coordinator and he was trying to get milton to go play for the tigers. Milton chose harbaugh in michigan. But he feels like he's had that connection with hypo all along as for pit. The panthers won the coastal in two thousand eighteen. But it feels like the door is open. Not only for them to get back there but may be win the acc. They have one of the most experienced quarterbacks in college football. Maybe the most one of the most underrated anyway in kenny. Pickett and paul. You're back now. So go ahead next rap me on dave. I look forward to this day for so long. I i have to say. I mean everyone knows. You're a consummate professional but to be able to just pick up. And i mean you could have gone on for four more hours.

"Because i think there is a lot going on there as far as texas and oklahoma. Nobody's saying anything right now. And certainly i want to hear what greg sankey says in three hours but it would just seem to me that it's opened the door a little bit wider for a A sue a quicker exit Because i agree everything. That malls has said has now been you know really shoved right back at him and and. I don't think that you know what. I don't think you really wanna start a new league off with two malcontent. So i think. I think the door is now open for negotiation. That's my opinion. I i've been on a plane all day. It's not like i've spoken anyone so I'm really eager to talk to the commissioner. Another thing. I want to talk to him about. John is the playoff and i was reading nicole our backs piece today and the athletic and others And it looks like at first glance. This twelve team playoff is dead and at least it's dead for happening anytime soon. So i i think i think the people that are aligned with fox have used the texas oklahoma departure As a way to play politics and they've muddied the waters And i think they've ended up hurting themselves in. This comes off arrogant but the sec is the league that needs the twelve team playoff the least and the big twelve and pac twelve needed most. And they're not going to get it and that's their own fault. Well thanks for the update. I won't shoot the messenger. But i do appreciate the update. Thank you very much appreciate glad to hear from you. Britain is up next britain. Thank you and welcome to our show. Thank you for having a just real quick from a razorback fan perspective Really jealous that you guys are there at the stadium. Which was there. But i just want to say. I think it's really unfortunate that arkansas has to go out and really prove themselves. Just how tough they are every season and it just feels like the dodgers stacked against them whenever they have the hardest schedule and the fbi the second year in a row even the third year in a row. And you know if they were a team like alabama playing mercer every week i think they can maybe show everybody what they're really capable of it. Well i appreciate your thoughts You're right arkansas. Schedule last year was was next to impossible but it is a rotation And there's a there's a message in the madness but but ultimately i don't think arkansas's future is going to be judged by this game tomorrow. I think it is a measuring stick. I think ultimately arkansas will be judged how it does against auburn does against missouri and texas saying And in other schools like that. So i think it's an opportunity for this program to make a stamp on national television but no one no one's going to be Gnashing their teeth. This game you know ends up as a loss. Hey thanks for the call. Brandon is up. Next head brandon today posed brandon We are doing great. It's really cool to be out here. Hey great I had a question or a two part question. If you don't mind sir I was looking at Preseason ranked spor sec quarterbacks. And this is obviously before this past saturday. And i think it was saturday down. South could have been somebody else. I'm not gonna. I don't know but they had a will weather at number ten which is fair. That's fine. i'm wondering but that got me started thinking as far as What you saw on saturday. And i'm not talking about the opposition. I'm more of talking about accuracy and strength of arms stuff. Like that and the was going.

"I think that's what's going to happen. No matter who the quarterback is. I just think mack jones gives you more consistency with his. Throwing cam can still give you a homerun play. And so the jk dobbins injury. This is the ohio state running back and high hopes for him out for the year torn. Acl gus. edwards. I guess is still going to be the main guy but i thought that getting jk dobbins. I thought that was a wonderful drought. Pick by the ravens eleven. There's some fantasy players out there. Who adam is like eighth pick you know just stuck average six yards a carry last year. It was supposed to be the number one guy. That's why you wait right. What's your ideal time for a fantasy draft. You gotta wait right. I would think like by the end of this week would be ideal. But when i was at. Espn in during that last week. Before the first game in the nfl you could go by conference room and you see the door would-be shut and somebody was having a fantasy draft now normally. It looks like a sports center meeting because we always have a pre show meeting. And there'd be fifteen to twenty people in there and that's what it it sounded like but all was was they would hold their fantasy drafts in a conference room after a sportscenter. Show yama club. I remember video right when you transitioned off and you did a video where you were heckling a fantasy draft. Yeah that was very funny. You weren't heckling. You're judging everybody mainly yes. Yes oh by the way. Espn i i saw a couple of former espn and mike golic. And trey wingo went to the darius rucker concert and i saw john anderson who still there at the mothership. Very nice conversation. Mike junior saw him as well. So a festive night with Darius rucker everybody played nice. All around a coupla pictures. And i spent a lot along with john anderson packer fan. Big packer fan and He's been season ticket holder but had a good conversation with him and Trey wingo mike golic talking about what golic's gonna do is future so everybody played nice. Yes time get an opportunity to go on stage. Play the nago drums right. No nope nope. They had some kind of police barricade there that wouldn't allow me to go on stage. Plus the bodyguard buddy dairies. His bodyguard buddy was right there in front. Like right in front of me just to make sure i couldn't get on stage and buddy slowed down a little bit had hip replacement surgery. Like if i needed to get by my probably could. But i thought all right i get the message. You're not going on stage tonight. And i only play the big venues now when i played the garden with houdini. Blowfish like after that. I don't need to play anymore. Like i played the garden. I mean if they get back together play wembley. I'd play wembley hollywood bowl. Maybe answer that it'd be pretty cool. Yeah rocks and simsbury was a nice venue but it's simsbury. It's not the garden. I only play. The big venues wanna go on stage. Yeah pawn does daria. Say good evening simsbury connecticut. What's the what's the move there. He didn't good evening anybody. They just came out. Started singing yes. He came out and started bringing the rock. Yeah that's what he does. That's what he does..

"Was producing for show all right at only being paid for one as opposed to one exactly the afc most likely to make it to the super bowl. Not named the kansas city chiefs is wow you know what i think. The next in line is buffalo. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna no no. But i'm not saying buffalo because i'm adding a little hard here which i normally don't do with my head born and raised in because i think the third best team could be the cleveland. Browns is so if it's not kansas city. Listen they are set up. I mean what they have done off the field obtaining talent and how that's been playing. I know they dealt with some injuries but if they can get these pieces together. Let's see we're baker goes. I mean baker is going to get paid. I don't know about like josh ellen. But let's see where he goes. Now we've seen the upside we've seen the downside and we've seen the upside of him. But i like where they are if they can stay away from injury something none of us can never predict. They got a real shot again. Everybody keeps saying they have. They have a great rosser on paper and they do. A paper doesn't mean shit. Everybody knows that. But i think they could get it done. I really do so. If it's not the kansas city chiefs. I will say my hometown. Cleveland browns a seven point loss to obama for miami and mike golic has cleveland in the super bowl. At mike ryan.

"What's good everybody. Welcome to another niners nation. Podcast i am rob's that's carreira here with you as i said yesterday. Michelle magique is off today. So there's no regular stats and mags podcast. But don't worry wanted to do something a little different to take advantage of the fact that we can switch it up a little bit here. So i was able to get hold of mike. Golic junior of espn. He was kind enough to sit down with me yesterday. So we can talk about the forty niners offensive line look. They've had a lot of problems there last season. We all know mike. Mcglinchey issues are well documented. Well golick obviously played for notre dame. He still has close ties to that program and with mcglinchey and now aaron banks on the right side of that forty niners offensive line to notre dame guys i thought it might be worth checking in with golick and you know picking his brain a little bit. Why did mike mcglinchey. Struggle can the forty niners offensive line. Be better in twenty twenty one. What are we getting with aaron banks. How is alex mack. Going to help things at center. So mike and i sort of ran the gamut here when it comes to the offensive line and also yes we did talk about trae lance a little bit because mike had a great reaction when lance was initially drafted by the forty niners. He was extremely excited. And he thinks lance is a little bit more pro ready than maybe some of the other people in the national media so we got all that with. Mike was about twenty minute interview. Wanted to give you the chance to hear it again before i toss to that just reminder if you haven't done it already please follow the niners nation podcast network leave us a five star rating and review. It really does matter. If there's more guests you wanna hear different guests you want me to ask a guest a certain question. Drop it in your review. I promise you we will read it all right without further ado. Here's mike golic. Junior of espn got an interesting guests. Somebody that i know back from my days at espn radio way. Back in god the early two thousands. Now michael junior you know from chennai golick you know for pretty much everything. Espn what's up. Mike thanks for coming up stat going to say. We were just talking about the entire likened by coaching tree. Wherever once ended up right now so glad we can look back and it's a while yes it definitely has. There's a ton. I wanna get to. But i always said that if i got the chance to interview i would do this because i used to. Produce profootballtalk which was on six. Am so. I'll be driving into work when you were on with robin lundberg on the overnights on espn radio. We first and last. And i gotta tell you when i first heard you were on. The i was like this is bullsh- golic's kid is on the air. He doesn't deserve this. This is unbelievable. And i thought you stunk. And i listen to you every single day and i want to say to you. I was jealous. And i was one hundred percent wrong then. And you've only gotten better now. And i wanted to say on the air because i always felt bad about it. I always said. I would never begrudge anyone for feeling that way about me because listen. We all certainly jobs for different reasons than i knew. A big part of mine was exactly what everyone saw there. So i a grudge anyone you on that way in you probably right then because god love robin lundberg. Who had to really help me along all that one i have. I know everyone tells you to save your first couple of shows and go back and listen. I have not had the courage to go back and listen for a couple of first of last so you were probably right. Then but it's it's it's been a journey for sure. I got lucky that they put me. They're just you know tried to make the most of it since it's just like football. Reps rep threats. You know eventually. The bad still works at this point. So we'll see how much longer we can fool them. So i'm willing to admit when i'm wrong clearly but i don't think i'm wrong when i look at the forty niners offensive line and that's one of the things i wanted to talk to you about today. I don't know where to start. I gotta start. I guess with mike mcglinchey. Like can you explain to me. How dude that was kicked in the top. Ten of the draft is getting put on his ass by defensive backs last season. Show i think mike and for i think last season's going to end up being a bit of an anomaly for bike here. I just i know for him. He was a guy that when.

"That you worked with for a long time. Trey wing kenny. Main laboratory reference before journal hill. Michael smith dan. Patrick i can give you fifty more people or whatever they've they've all found success post. Espn some of these people obviously will find far more success like dan. Not everybody's going to fifty million dollars from draft kings but you have so many examples of people who left espn and forged like these sort of new paths and new successes. And i don't know if like everybody who worked at espn twenty years ago. Might have believed that. I think people believe that. Espn was the destination if anything ever happened to you and you lost your espn job like that. was it. do you not that. you need it. mike. And i'm sure financially you're fine and And everything else but do those guys like give you any kind of I don't even know what the word i'm looking for. Not necessarily blueprint but do you like seeing what they've done and then do you think to yourself. You know what like like. Yeah my been. Experience was fine. But i don't necessarily need. Espn like i have my own audience. That i think will come in and listen to me. I think one of the things about that is and you said it earlier. Going back to mike and mike started. It was a different world right. This was a different world where we were getting. Faxes you know. In the facts. The facts would roll up behind the thing. You have to dig it out and there was no twitter and there was no instagram and faxes were sponsored by somebody like sure as well as you know the studio in touch but now there are so many more ways you can put yourself out there and what. It shows me as far as those pizza. There's unbelievably talented people you know at. Espn still but what it also shows. That is those people are talented enough to where when. Espn doesn't want them anymore. Or they choose to leave at. Espn nurse still showing their talent. They still have the talent to go on and succeed in today's sports world because it has opened up it wasn't just nah. You better take what you can get. Espn because if you don't there's nothing else out there well there's a hell of a lot more else. That is out there. That can be competitive to where there are people that are choosing to leave. Espn because they think they can to have a better opportunity. Some new some don't So i think that's the big thing is what it does. It just confirms to me the talent of these people that are gone from. Espn that they have the ability to still be successful. Because they're good. they're they're flat out good Not again not to say listen. You know the big ticket guys you know what. Espn stephen a greenie Scott van pelt. He's guys are unbelievably talented. Wasn't there tons of talent with them. But that doesn't mean the guys and the men and women who have left the espn didn't have the talent. Espn just made their decisions on who they wanted to keep and who they didn't wanna keep that doesn't mean that those people that left weren't weren't great and they're showing it by going on their own. You continue to being successful Is that a motivation for me. No no it never was. I for me has always been family. I'm gonna do what's best for me and my family. Do i want to still be involved in sports. Yes but you know what. If i'm doing college people would say if you're doing college football you want to be on tv. When i my gig may do. Richard might be on radio. I don't care if it's on tv. I don't care if it's radio. I just love calling college games. I keep going back to my agent to do what you love to do. But one thing you can do when you leave. Espn is you can explore other areas. That you really couldn't do all you already. Espn as i mentioned earlier. This show i may be doing. And i wish it wasn't stone out to tell you but the show that i may be doing. It's something i couldn't do when i was espn. But now i can. And i did a pilot for it and it was a ball. It was a ton of fun so it does actually give you a little more freedom as well if you choose to go down different paths so i. I'm hoping to enjoy that. Well the good thing for you is if it's radio whether it's like a westwood one or an i m g type i mean. There are so many colleges out there with the opportunity to do to call games on that medium. So if that's something you're interested in i can. I would be stunned if that the if that doesn't happen for you are. Let's take a moment from our conversation to talk about in the nba and specifically what that's game means. I'm watching the nba for longtime grew up in new york. And watch those great nick teams with patrick ewing john. Starks charles oakley. They represented representative heartbeat in new york city. They played tough. They played hard and it was pretty much. It was pretty much thrilling basketball. Might not have been the most aesthetically pleasing basketball but thrilling basketball to watch those games. There was an excitement and energy. That's the thing i think about when it comes to the nba. I think about energy. And when i think about.

"That or any parent would be doing something like that for their kid and and whether it would have created something bad for him or not. I don't know the answer to that. But i certainly didn't want wanna take that chance so yes to answer your question What has proven. Listen when mike. I got the gig was doing four to six before me and greedy during our show and then then jumped out with trae and i do four to six and then jump on our show six hours of radio and he was the first. Oh always diffuse the situation of you know the old nepotism thing. I got asked about an understand that. Yeah yeah he understands. He got a chance because of the last name which and connections whether it's college connections family connections. Whatever that happens all the time. I'm not going to sit there and say it doesn't it does but we're also in a in a world where you still have to be. There's no way. Mike is still on air. Bike isn't doing a good job. I don't care what connected if life work on connections. Both mike and jake would still be playing in the nfl. 'cause i played the nfl for nine years but it doesn't work that way so you may be able to get in the door or crack the door open and have a chance but then you have to do your thing you know and mike is done it time and time again on radio and tv to prove is worth for being there but that being said i still would never wanna create a situation. That could be looked bad on for the name and with that name still working there at. Espn again do i know it would have had an effect on mike. I have no idea the end of the day. You're still dealing with human beings who can who can maybe take things personally or hold grudges. I don't know if they do or don't but you know you don't want it to affect any other entity outside of just. I'd wanna take it all myself so but i did it because i i. I'm not saying. I did it. "So we'll do that But but no to jhansi. Your question there was no psychological or cathartic reason to say well. We need to get out of here. We've been here long. You know and it ended and we're not happy or or or it's tuna static or we don't wanna look back so we need to get out now now i. It really didn't have anything to do with that. Are let me ask you. A very open ended question to start this. Why are you no longer. Espn from your perspective. I'll listen. I this has been the the the easiest thing for me to equate and i waited a lot of things to the sports world would certainly work. Because was you know the sports industry is you know. I got cut from the houston oilers from the miami. Dolphins are cut from the miami dolphins and the reason was is bathed. Want me anymore is simple. They didn't feel. I had worth of their team so they put me. I thought they were wrong. In both instances. But it doesn't matter what i say. They call into the office and the head coach office and they released you. They're going to release. You know there's no sense in all. I could do this or i could do that. They've made their decision with. Espn is the same thing you know when mike and mike ended They still felt there was value to having me there. That's why the new you know the new morning show with being trained and my son got going but after that deal was up and that contract was gonna be up they dispelled there wasn't anywhere and not even from a monetary point richard. Because they didn't even talk about taking less money we knew everybody was taken pay cuts. They didn't even talk about that. You know i again. I was a one in july thirty first when the show ended they. Were just gonna let you sit there for six months and collect the paycheck. And i said no. Let me let me go back and call college games. I loved doing college and they were like well. Hell okay. I guess he was going to work and who's going to get paid anyway. So yeah we'll have new college game. So i did that and you know we've gone back to him since in there were probably three or four different entities. We have been talking about college and espn was one of them and and their their last conversation with my jurors. No no now. Don't don't want it not and not even not even a talk of what we can't pay much. We can nothing. It was just so that they're just like those teams cut me. They felt i had worked for them. Espn i'm sure. Felt the same way. I have no more worth than she is in a blow to the eagle shirt. When you're there for for it would be but when you're there for as long as you are and all of a sudden you know you're you're not even it's not even discussed to keep you there. Yeah that's a blow to the eagle. But you know that's life you know. I can't sit here and cry about it and move on. It was a nice break and other people want me to do some things valley venture to that but the match y ended that. That's an easy question to answer. So let me al. I'm going to play devil's advocate here. I mean you. And i appreciate your answer. 'cause you sort of answered some of the things i asked so i asked this of trae and it was about you. So my thesis was. There's a strong argument to be made. That goes like this. Why would you remove. Mike golic from the morning spot. Given all his equity that he's built up with his audience given that this is not even like a major statement given that he's far and away the most well known person there. He's built a relationship with that specific audience. It would seem to be a no brainer to create a brand around. Mike golic on. Espn radio even if it's not in the morning so like one of my missing from from from management. They have a known quantity. You just told me that money wouldn't have been an issue. You'd be willing to sort of come up with a number that works for both sides. Is it really just a matter of sirte. Management just made. It made a decision that we don't want mike golic on espn radio anymore. Which is which if that's the decision that's on just i'll be very blunt that's just bad business anything but but that's absolutely what happened right i mean to. I mean they knew what i was making. I knew i was could make that any rows making obviously with mike and mike that went down when i went to me trae in my son and i knew if i was going to stay there and we'd go down again but like i said there was never that discussion. So that's you know. That's the two people i deal with. Espn questions for that. That that that just what you asked it would be put to them. Because when i put it to one of them i said why was like the first response was i. Don't know how we don't have to tell you like okay and then it was then it was while we think we felt it was for change and again if that's the reason if if you were to ask them and that would be what they said. We always been there twenty seven years. We just felt it was time for a change. Okay listen next. Their decision decisions like that are made all the time. Do i agree with no but again you know. I wasn't asked so that not richer that maybe there answer. Their answer might be we. We felt he's been there long enough. We we don't feel there's there's you know he's worth it being here anymore. Obviously they felt that. Because i'm not there So that that would be a question for them but they could probably give you an answer that easy and not get into anything more. If there is any more than i.

"If you are a sports media he doesn't really need an introduction. I'll give them one anyway. Mike golic spent twenty six years at espn as a radio host and if a studio analyst nfl and college football game analyst obviously part of one of the most well-known radio shows in the history of the medium. Mike and mike and mike golic is good enough to join me today on the sports media. Podcast mike i've been i've been trying to track you now for a while. I i appreciate you I really do appreciate you coming coming on no problem. Maybe i do need an introduction. Now it's been a while so so you know maybe people have for forgotten. What the what would i do or what i did. So maybe after reintroduce myself we yeah. We're in an attention deficit disorder society. But but i think your your resume probably holds all right. I you know full well. That obviously is some questions for you about espn and Your time there and obviously you leaving there. So let's start here if i have my research. Correct your last day on. Espn campus as an employee was december. Twenty second even though you did some college football scientists afterwards. We are now in june. What of the last six months or so been like for you. you're right. It was december twenty. Second my last gig. I did was the fiesta bowl in arizona with dave pasch january. Check it then it was. I said that. I think i tweeted it out when i was finished up cleaning out my office. The last person i saw it was sitting in my office whereas my son might so i thought that was that was kind of a poetic justice. The last person. I see after working there for years as a kid who was ten years old when i first got the year prehensile. Ours are pretty wild but in all honesty richard. I have enjoyed this time off. I always knew. I was going to get back into something and like my agent. Basically told me when when it ended in january and finished. She said listen. You had the choice of doing absolutely nothing things think you know. I'm not gonna lie thing. Things went well from that aspect. He said you could do nothing. He said you can just do partial things that you enjoy or you can jump back in with both feet and had it and he said you can decide and do whatever you want so i knew to sell as my wife said you know. I'm fifty fifty eight. So when i was done i just turned fifty eight and she said you're not gonna want to not do anything. Just sit around. So i'm going to do something but i did take a sweet old dan time in in getting there because i did enjoy probably took me three weeks to get out of the four fifteen. Wake up mode So i i. I've normalized like seven thirty quarter to eight. Now which has been nice. I go to bed later. Unbelievably i've been watching the nba playoffs and actually watching be ten ten thirty game in its entirety. Something i was never able to do while i was doing morning show so i have been doing a lot you know. We sold our place in connecticut that we lived there for obviously decades couple of decades. And i have a house right on Right by notre dame campus that the kids love to come to during the season. And i have a place in scottsdale. So chris and i my wife will jump back and forth between there. We've done that already. And i at this point. So i've done nothing but go on podcast and chose and things like that At this point. I'm i'm deciding between a couple of different podcasts. Things a couple of different college football things and something that i think will be a lot of fun. Richard a it. It's not in. The sports world will involve some sports people. It will involve travelling to their hometowns. Possibly that's something that's still kind of in the works but that that's one of those things that my agent talked about doing those fun things. Bundy has been college football. I love doing it. And i'll do it again just a matter with who and this other project if it goes and i should find out pretty soon. I was hoping to have banned by the time you and i were able to do. This unfortunately It's it's getting there but not just yet. I think that's going to be a lot of fun. And then you know the world run now. We're doing right now. It's a world the podcast. I'll jump into that as well so you're timeframe then is i mean you're fairly. You're fairly close to having something that you'll do. Look let's call it on a regular basis. Yes the reason being and you would not anybody in this industry knows you're going to get going. You better be by football season. You know that. That's the mother of all season. So this is mrs kind of basically the time the downtime as you. When i was doing radio is right when nba was ending. And i know. I believe it's going a little longer than what it normally done. But usually the nba had ended around the second or third week of june and we had basically that month month and a half until the nfl camps. Scott going and that was kinda that dead time but by middle end of july early august. You better get going and better be doing something and i plan on being by there was a thought of maybe doing a little early. But i'm not gonna lie. I have enjoyed kind of having my own schedule and and doing nothing. I i have enjoyed it. But you know i. I do miss talking. I was doing a bunch of interviews for a company around the super bowl. And every time i would finish my wife would be like you need to get back into this. You know you just you have. You have too much to say. And i'm sick of being the only one listening to it so i am joe. I have taken my time but but by by football or before a beagle. Don't want to play amateur psychologist here but was was. Did you feel like it was important for you and your family to leave connecticut and to move away from the the area of bristol and almost start a new. Is that why part of the reason you move. I know you're notre dame guy no you love that part of the world. But i did feel like you had to get out of there just because you're you wanna psychological Disconnection to you mean it being started to move and no no no. We did not think that it was. Just you know we had the place in connecticut. We had the place here. Where i'm at notre dame we got the bison scottsdale that's three. I didn't need more shell. You know the toughest part was you know. Mike is right there In in west hartford he was fifteen minutes. Must and jake and my son jake and his wife. Jenny and my daughter said the her fiance ben. We're all in boston. So that was the one great thing about it but but the thing we can always do is we will get like. We're going to wait to see where everybody's shuttles within the next six months or a year. Where are they then. And then if everybody is still back east we can go get an apartment or condo backyard just to have a place to drop the bags and be able to see everybody..

College Football Playoff Rankings: UCF jumps Ohio State, moves to No. 9 as top eight holds

"Lot of moving at least as far as college. Football's concern, you look at the latest rankings the first movement that we notice as UCF moving up a couple of spots to number nine, but the top eight all the same Mike Leach coach of number eight Washington state and earlier on ESPN radio was asked how much he discusses the rankings with his team. We don't talk about it, all, you know. I mean because of. Really had any impact on our season. I mean, everybody get ahead. Head kicked in. I forget the games we play. We played eleven games survey thought, we're going to get our grade or so and and we did. So then so if we listened to that stuff, then we wouldn't have worn the games we have. And so listen to it. Now, it's not gonna help us win there. You know? I mean, the best thing we can do is just just to have a great practice tomorrow. Is we're getting ready for Washington in Washington. Yeah. Washington's a great football team. And they're loaded up, and you know, they dumped people in the NFL every year. So we gotta go out there and play good Mike Leach coach of Washington state, which hold steady at number eight in the rankings, the four playoff teams are still the same Georgia, Oklahoma number five and six then there's that bunching of LSU Washington state and UCF at seven eight nine earlier on ESPN radio Jason Fitz and Mike Golic junior and dad, I'm a little surprised that Washington state didn't jump LSU for whatever that would mean again. But I was surprised at that LSU. I think they they played rights hammered rice. It was and Washington state put it at fifty five at halftime. I resort in Washington state has been looking really good. I thought they should've jumped up at least past LSU, and this one I think to that extent. Like, this is a little bit of the committee telling us that the larger body of work they've made up their mind. They have a good

Mike Golic Jr. talks ESPN and the NFL

"Really excited today to talk to one of my favorite people in sports media. He doesn't unbelievable job. It's hard to actually turn on ESPN radio and not hear it went one AM when it's eight AM on it's noon. I, I swear. There's some days there where he goes for like fourteen straight hours. It's really, really impressive. He's Mike Golic, junior had an outstanding career. Nerd aim was in the NFL for a while and guy. I got to know a little bit gosh along time ago. Now, at this point, Mike, what's up, man? How are you. I'm doing good Ross. I appreciate it. Man. It's been. It's been nice. Listen, the one thing I learned and know Frank Verduci a mutual friend of ours and former coach brought us together for one thing I learned from you. Basically, everyone else in footballers can do, and I'm sure that no matter what I'm doing a lot. So it's a lot harder for ESPN to fire me if they ever start to get wise to that start to think otherwise. Yes. So give me the breakdown. So are you still doing like the cold first and last still? Yup. So I got first and last four to six. AM the last month has been sort of weird because you know in radio, the summer is not really a big ratings bonanza. So they tell everyone take their time off, which means that I end up doing it a lot. So I get to fill in for dead and trae on golick a window when they're out. I've been filling in the Dan lebatardshow for us on ESPN which is ten AM to noon eastern to one eastern. And so I kinda just find myself in a lot of different spots over the last few weeks of the summer and. Try and make myself useful man opportunities. There are few and far between so you make sure they're, they're dot apart woman. I have a six AM radio show, so I got crazy respect for you having a four to six show, but are you not? Are you not on golick and wingo with your dad and trae every day anyway. Yeah. So I do two hours with them every day. I go that four to six for me. It's so radio there. So I got two hours by myself before they get started. And then I go over there with them for the first two hours of their show sort of bridge that morning gap, you know, dead and Traer both, you know, fifty five plus year old guys.

Roberto Osuna makes Houston Astros debut, tosses perfect eighth inning against San Francisco Giants

"ESPN, app Allegra, Pilion this morning for Mike Golic junior Kennedy talk a little bit about the New York Jets and their quarterback situation. Sam, darnold get a chance to show what he can do in a real game on Friday meanwhile the big, question hovering over New York Giants camp is the contract status of Odell Beckham junior his representation leaving giants camp yesterday without a deal getting. Done because impart the giants have pegged Beckham's market value at. A total annual average salary lower then she's wide receiver Sammy Watkins according to. Our Josephine Anderson here's the latest on Odell Beckham junior's contract situation from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter got a, situation here where both sides want to get. This done before the start of, the regular season both sides are motivated, to get it done and when the deal is done assuming that they can work it out I would imagine it would make him the highest paid wide receiver in the game because you could dress up a deal to look any way you want in really come down. To the structure the deal and the guarantee Right but the big thing for the giants and for Odell Beckham mystic get that deal done to give him that long term security these sought after that the fellow wide receivers from his draft already have gun Adam Schefter on the six. PM sports, center, last night. Talking. About the Odell Beckham junior contract situation and I've I've read some some reports that people believe this is trending in the right. Direction which is which, is all well and good but I'm I'm I'm sorry If I'm Odell Beckham junior's, agent and, the giants say well we're going. To give Odell, a salary That's a total annual average salary less. Than that of Sammy Watkins I'm not just leaving I'm laughing in their. Faces and, then I'm leaving Sammy Watkins is nice player got a contract. From the Kansas City Chiefs last year Sammy Watkins had seventy catches for five hundred ninety three yards he has one account a. One thousand yard season, twenty had a really good year and thirteen games just over one thousand yards, nine, touchdowns nice player but it's Sammy Watkins I think, the Kansas. City Chiefs, overpaid him. And and yet you know to to bring him into the, conversation with, Odell Beckham junior. Who is in the conversation among those. Being the best wide receiver in the NFL that is ludicrous ludicrous and I get it it's a. Negotiation and you gotta start from somewhere and okay so the giants. Up their asking price. I mean I I get, it it's gotta start. From somewhere and you know you're probably gonna low ball the guy I. Mean I, understand but if if our motel Beckham junior Afam Odell Beckham. JR junior's age I'm sitting down I'm trying to get a deal done what would be the highest paid wide receiver in the. NFL I'm watching this, wide receiver market explode And you mentioned the name Sammy Watkins it only better be because he's, among the names whose salaries will be dwarfed by what I'm about to get or what I'm about to get for my client owed l. Beckham junior and Sammy Watkins, are not in the, same stratosphere not, even is not even in the same. Conversation. If I'm talking about best wide receivers. In the, NFL, no-one's Mel yes. Sammy Watkins that's not even. A name you, pull out to sound really, really smart. And nothing, against him. Again nice player valuable player you know maybe helps out the, Kansas City, Chiefs this year. But I'm sorry Beckham junior's agent and. I'm looking at those numbers and the comp in other the comparable dollar amount is to Sammy Watkins We are laughing at the New York Giants First and. Last on ESPN radio and the ESPN app all is last night on what was happening with the Houston Astros who have Roberto Osuna who joined his teammates on Sunday and met with them in Los Angeles and had what by all accounts was a productive meeting with his new team-mates Roberto soon as the controversial pitcher whose obtained at. The trade deadline from the Toronto Blue Jays he made his Astros debut last night in San. Francisco in a game against the giants here thanks to our. Friends at KB EMMY not a seven ninety AM is audio of. Roberto, Osuna entering the game in San Francisco one nothing giants spot them of the eighth inning and Roberto Ceuta the new Astro making his Astros debut his first pitch to Alan Hansen pinch. Hitter is. A strike on the outside corner. All right there was a smattering of boos I guess you really couldn't. Hear, him that much in the background, ozone ah for his part on the. Mound did his job pitching a one-two-three inning First pitch. And that's.

NFL: New helmet rule causing confusion for Philadelphia Eagles

"Many people. Talking about it Sam darnold, a lot of people that. Was going to be the number one pick but, he's the guy not controversial guy if Baker mayfield's doing this people are losing their minds those debate shows people are screaming at each other But it's not. As Sam darnold who's doing something I think. Kind of foolish an immature get to, camp they have to, other quarterbacks get, to camp don't do things the compromiser, availability and you won't have to worry about the money being taken away first and, last on ESPN radio and the ESPN. App it's football at five, four Mike Golic junior Philadelphia. Eagles players are, confused and I'm probably with them They had a presentation put forth by NFL referees about the new. Helmet rules new rules players they say player getting penalized fifteen yards potentially find.
