And you know, I wonder, the guy who's running against, by the way, his name, Mike Franken. Yeah. And I'm wondering how many people in Iowa think they're voting for Al Franken. That's fine. You know, seriously. And it's life and death for old chuck and he's not, you know, he's built for comforting and built for speed. He's not built for the home stretch right now. Yeah. So who knows? I mean, I mean, I think you're going to, I think what you are going to see is a lot of split ticket voters. Yeah. Yeah. For example, I think in Iowa, Kim Reynolds is probably going to get reelected governor. But grassley could lose. Yeah. Whitmer's going to win. You know, I think the democratic gubernatorial candidates are in great shape. Do you? I hope so. Tony Evers in Wisconsin, I'm sending novena upwards for, but I think a lot of them, I think a lot of them are going to survive more Healy's going to win, you know, from here or there in Massachusetts, not the typical of anything. Right. Right. But you know, I guess it is astounding that statistical speaking of statistical ties, Herschel Walker. Has gone up despite all these allegations. I think that there's a whopping big vote down there who doesn't want to be represented in Congress by, you know, inarticulate doof. Yeah. Yeah. Well, and that's do you like if you say from the episode? Yes. I mean, you're right to Travis's point about polls, especially now. I mean, yeah, this one had a swinging four points toward walker, so it's like in a tie, basically, but then there was a New York Times Siena poll last week showed Warnock up by three. I mean, it's like we were saying some of it, I think, is deliberate, like the joy Reid covered yesterday. There's a lot of Republican commission polls that are meant to try to suppress democratic votes. They're infecting the average. You don't get the RealClearPolitics average or somebody else's average, and you've got, you know, 9 or ten, you know, self Rasmussen Republican polls. Yeah, it's going to screw up the average a little bit. Do you have a winning chime? Voting numbers. Look at the turnout numbers. Yeah. That's his grandfather clock. It is, well, ten 45 there.

"Show that the U.S. economy grew at a relatively healthy rate in the last three months. Sounds good, but how much can we make of that? NPR Scott horsley joins us now, Scott good morning. Thanks, Steve. What do these numbers tell us about how the economy is doing? This is the gross domestic product. It's the broadest measure of economic activity. And it's expected to show the economy grew at an annual rate of two to 3% in the late summer and early fall. Which sounds pretty good, especially compared to the first half of the year when GDP showed the economy was shrinking. In reality, though, the economy is kind of in a holding pattern. Mark zandy is chief economist at moody's analytics. If you take a step back and look at GDP, it's gone effectively nowhere over the past year. So one quarter or two, it's down a bit this quarter. It's up a little bit. But net net were kind of treading water. Trading water, of course, is not great, but it is better than sinking. What is keeping the economy from growing more quickly? Inflation is certainly one challenge. It's cutting into people's buying power and in response the Federal Reserve has been raising interest rates. Mortgage rates of more than doubled in the last year, and that's taking a heavy toll on the housing market, which is a significant component of GDP. Paul swinghammer builds custom homes in Indiana, his company hallmark homes had a record year last year when the housing market was booming, but he sees a lot less work coming down the pipeline now. We are saying that the top of the funnel is not as full as it was. So we know that as we finish homes, we're not going to be starting as many in the coming months in the next year as we have been in the last two years. And this is not an accident. The fed is deliberately raising borrowing costs and effort to tamp down demand and curb inflation. The housing market is one of the first places that shows up, but it probably won't be the last. At the same time, Scott, you're telling us these numbers with the economy treading water. Something is also pulling up the economy even as other things are dragging it down. What is working? The biggest driver of the economy is, as always, consumer spending. And so far that has held up pretty well, even though prices are going up faster than most people's wages. In some cases, people have been able to draw on savings that they built up in the first two years of the pandemic to supplement their spending. The JPMorgan Chase institute says, on average, bank account balances are still a lot higher now than they were in 2019 before the pandemic. Those bank balances are starting to come down so you can't necessarily count on those savings to prop up spending indefinitely. How's next year looking? We are probably in for a period of slow growth, if not outright contraction. A lot will depend on how hard the fed hits the brakes and for how long. A lot of forecasters think the U.S. will slip into recession in the coming year. Zandy though is hopeful we might avoid that, but he says it's a close call. We need to catch a break. We've been pretty unlucky. We got nailed by a global pandemic, which still is creating havoc in many parts of the world. And the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which wasn't even on the radar screen a year ago. So we just need a little bit of luck. So far, the job markets held up very well, employers added nearly 3.8 million jobs so far this year. We'll be on the lookout for any slowdown in the October jobs numbers when they come out next week. And Pierre Scott horsley, thanks so much. You're welcome. Early voting is underway in Iowa, where voters will decide whether to give Republican chuck grassley an 8th term in the U.S. Senate. On the whole national Democrats think the state isn't competitive for them. Iowa public radio's claim masters reports, though, that grassley is now facing the toughest reelection battle of his political career. This is the 99th county county meeting that I've had for the 42nd year in a row. Republican senator chuck grassley has been representing Iowa for what seems like forever. For decades, he was reelected in a state many saw as purple. Megan Goldberg is a political scientist at Cornell college in eastern Iowa. She says things have changed. And so things have gotten more polarized so people. And so you should expect a lot of states that were purple to start to shift one direction. We have the demographics that are going to push us in the rightward direction, not the left word. The Supreme Court's decision to overturn roe V wade energized supporters of reproductive rights here. Even in small towns that turn out big for Republicans. Like in McGregor, where I come across a handful of protesters holding signs that say things like women, vote like your life depends on it, because it does. Aaron Cuban is one of the protesters here almost every Friday. We're barreling towards 2024, which really seems like the last chance we have to stay a democracy. It's scary. She says it's hard to believe Iowa helped launch former president Obama's rise to The White House and was among the first to legalize same sex marriage. Chuck grassley has been in Washington for nearly a half century. He's been reelected easily, partly because he presents himself as a moderate. But the 89 year old has learned to embrace former president Trump like Republican voters have in the state, grassley accepted his endorsement at a Trump rally in Des Moines last year. I was born at night, but not last night. So if I didn't accept the endorsement of a person that's got 91% of the Republican voters in Iowa, I wouldn't be too smart. That means, though, he's often facing questions about the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election. I asked grassley recently why he pivots to talk about election policy instead of pushing back on Trump's false claim about a stolen election. Don't you think that's what I should be doing instead of talking about the personality of an individual? Would that be an opportunity though to say that the election was legitimate you voted to certify the election of president Joe Biden? I shouldn't have to repeat that. It's a fact that what I said on November the 14th, when the electoral votes were counting. Yeah. You hear his staffer there at the end. The new Des Moines register Iowa poll suggests voters might be ready to move on, even as this state becomes redder. Grassley is just three points ahead of his democratic challenger, retired navy admiral Mike Franken. There's a portion of Iowa that will not vote for me because I'm a Democrat. That

"For the candidate there. Yeah, I think Arizona is hard to beat Mark Kelly. Mark Kelly is an astronaut. He has, you know, he's married to Gabby Giffords who is pretty popular, he's got a pretty sympathetic life story, fighter pilot, space shuttle campaigner, but he has a tough environment to run in as well with inflation. If he ends up losing, I think the border issues and the inability of the Biden administration to really stem those flows, which is something that Kelly has criticized the administration for not taking more action on. Might be the reason. Is there a potential for any October surprise? And if so, what? There's always a potential for October surprises. We saw one earlier with Herschel Walker. With the story about him paying him being accused of by the mother of one of his four children with four different women of paying for an abortion and urging him to have a second and she refusing and deciding to have one of his sons. I mean, I think he's had such a messy personal life. That's kind of been the story of that race. You know, we have, there are some other races that can pop up. I mean, I think the Iowa Senate race with chuck grassley is sort of come on the scene in the last week or so after the Des Moines register at a poll showing grassley only up three points on Mike Franken. That's the kind of thing every year there tends to be one race or two that surprises you and on the one hand, it's hard to imagine chuck grassley losing. He's won every election since 1959. In the state of Iowa has served continuously since 1959 in one capacity or another. But on the other hand, at some point, people start saying, hey, we need somebody new. You're going to be willing to your 90s. By the end of the 6 year term, and Mike Franken has put forth a credible campaign. He's got a military background and trying to say, you know, he's going to be a moderate. I think that that actually would be not a huge, crazy thing to happen. And of course, right now, if you look at the polls, we're ending up with a 50 50 Senate. And so any one of these Senate races could determine all kinds of things. One just one word I would put out there of why stuff like this matters is Merrick Garland. The reason why Merrick Garland is the attorney general anonymous Supreme Court and why roe V wade therefore got overturned is because of the 2014 midterms where the Republicans won the Senate control and then decided not to hold any hearings or a vote on Merrick Garland. And Merrick Garland did make it to the Supreme Court and Neil Gorsuch did and you have 5 four vote to overturn roe completely. So that the Supreme Court seats could open up in the next couple of years. It seems pretty unlikely that Republicans are going to be eager to fill one of those seats with a Joe Biden pick. So. These are going to be very interesting times next couple of years if we're going to have divided government. We've got a dump limit coming up. A lot of things coming forward in all depending, potentially trillions of dollars one way or another on each of these Senate races. Steven, thank you so much. Great to be here. "Tens and tens of millions of dollars. It looked close in maybe a few weeks out. But the getting this money from outside. Yeah, and so in the end, these states tend to sort of revert to form and Lindsey Graham won on a blowout. Let's do a quick lightning round. For some of the other states in the other races, I just want to get an idea of what it is you as the expert what you are watching for in these particular races. Georgia Senate race. Georgia Senate race is now all about whether voters can trust her walker. You know, he's got to close that gap and get Republicans comfortable with voting for him. North Carolina. North Carolina is sort of a sleeper race. Sherry Beasley has been within a few points of Ted bud. It's going to be a real test of whether African American voters in North Carolina are excited about having an African American democratic nominee. And also whether roe V wade gets Democrats and maybe some crossover Republican voters in that state. Arizona where the governor of Virginia was just visiting this past week to campaign for the candidate there. Yeah, I think Arizona is it's hard to beat Mark Kelly. Mark Kelly is an astronaut. "Home estimate. It is two 11. If Democrats keep control of Congress after the midterms, president Joe Biden says his first legislative priority will be protecting abortion rights. And when Congress passes it, I'll sign it in January 50 years after row was first decided the law of the land. The president's address comes exactly three weeks from election day. Well, joining us live from Capitol Hill, double DTO peace Mitchell Miller, Mitch, the president in today's clearly trying to elevate abortion rights as an issue, but the political landscape has definitely changed since the Supreme Court's decision the summer tell us about that. It really has over the summer you'll recall polling indicated abortion rights was rising in importance to many voters, but while it's clearly going to be a factor in some house races, inflation has persisted in New York Times, CN Sienna, and a New York Times Siena college poll found that inflation and the economy were the top concern for 44% of voters, that compares to just 5% citing abortion, House Republicans have been hammering home this issue with ads showing candidates walking with shopping carts and supermarkets, citing those high prices. Republicans only need to flip 5 seats to retake the house and nonpartisan political analysts are now predicting that the GOP will have a majority with perhaps another ten Republican seats to spare when it's all said and done. When Republicans or while Republicans appear to have the edge for retaking the house Mitch, the Senate does still seem wide open, doesn't it? It really does Hillary the Senate could quite literally be a coin flip right now. You have tight races in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin, Nevada, in particular, and in Georgia where democratic senator Raphael Warnock is trying to defeat Republican Herschel Walker. The first day of early voting yesterday crushed the old midterm record set in 2018 more than a 130,000 people voted yesterday that's nearly double that of 2018 showing the intense interest in elections there, including the governor's race, there are also races elsewhere that are closer that I inspected, including the Senate races in Ohio and Utah, where Republicans have been favored to keep the seats in the GOP column. Mitch once Senate race that is surprising a lot of people is in Iowa where the longest serving Republican senator chuck grassley may be in some trouble. That's right, Sean, this could be the toughest reelection for chuck grassley, who's 89, since he was elected in the Senate way back in 1980, a Des Moines registered mediacom Iowa poll shows grassley with just a 3% lead over Democrat Mike Franken. He's a retired navy admiral, grassley says he's unconcerned about the poll, but it does include some potential warning signs, two thirds of those surveyed say they see grassley's age as a concern instead of an asset and his opponent seems to be getting support from independent voters. Hey Mitch quickly before we go, another U.S. Senate debate tonight. And this one is in Florida. That's right. Republican senator Marco Rubio facing off against democratic congresswoman Val demings, who trails Rubio in the polls. She's raised a lot more money than Rubio and hit him with ads criticizing his opposition to abortion rights. He has in turn tried to tie demings, a former police chief to House speaker Nancy Pelosi. This is expected to be their only debate, so it may be the biggest chance deming has demings has to cut into Rubio's lead. Well, down the stretch we come, you'll be busy guy. That's right, next three weeks are going to be very busy

You said chicanery, even violent chicano polling places has a long history in American politics for a long time, it was often fueled by alcohol, provided to the citizens on their way to vote. That's right. In fact, as an author author Daniel okrent reports is fine history of prohibition, it goes back to elections called even before the U.S. was the U.S. when 24 year old George Washington first ran for a seat in the Virginia House of burgesses. He attributed his defeat to his failure to provide enough alcohol for the voters. When he tried again two years later, Washington floated into office, partly on the 144 gallons of rum punch and hard cider and beer. His election agent handed out. In 1970 7, excuse me, James Madison, a future president and principal author of the constitution lost an election because he refused to ply voters with booze. Yeah. According to a historian, this was called swilling the planters with gumbo. In New York. That phrase was now entered my lexicon, by the way. And also I didn't know the famous Hatfield McCoy feud had been Kentucky was exacerbated by a murder of a Hatfield by a McCoy in a drunken election day brawl. I did not know anything.
