"To this story so first. Let's hear from mike and terry traviata. I saw a story about a restaurant owner in northern illinois who literally is facing fines for flying an american flag outside his business. And you know you see these stories once in a while and you just scratch your head and you wonder how did america get to this point. And i'm so glad and show honored to welcome terry trobbiani. Who owns it's a hotdog and beef spot. Along highway one. Seventy six right in prairie grove. Mckenry henry mchenry county illinois. I have it right terry. Do thank you very much for joining us can. Can you start. And we'll get into some of the details in a moment. But i want to go big picture. I wanna start at thirty five thousand feet. We're living in america. We have challenging times. We've got a pandemic. We got questions about so many things and yet a flag is supposed to unify us. Remind us that. We're americans were in this together through thick and through thin. I gotta ask you terry from your perspective. How did we get here. How does a business owner who wants to fly a flag outside his business face fines from the government. I'm like you know it's funny. You say i'm scratching my head. But i'm really i'm getting smart. I've seen what this villages done I just found out today that just a side note on the only person in the village that's ever been written for a sign ordinance violation in five years. So there's little battle going on between us i. It's just amazing with his village is done. Basically what's happened with this. Show the flag in this kind of kind of encapsulate. Exactly what's been happening They have village. Ordinance which prohibits the use of temporary try put flags out on the fourth of july weekend and i and i left him out there and then after the fourth of july moved into a straight line back on my personal property twenty three feet off the street eighteen and a half feet off my exterior curb almost seventeen and a half feet off the i. In no way was in the right away improperly displayed i was not a hazard vehicles But what i realized was the village designated mike flag as he signed. So answer your question. This is how we get here. You have small town municipal governments people who get a little bit of power and they just want to. They want to express their own opinions. And people in business in their way is only the right way and you mentioned about looking at the bigger picture. That's what they don't do they. Just wanna quiet you. They want silence you and they're going to do it anyway. They can. and now they're trying to backpedal they're telling people on line. They're sending out emails out the responding to fox news and different news stations. That i have done interviews with and they're putting out these statements. I violated the violated. The positioning of the flag displayed it. Improperly all of these things. Well my question to them would be when you police officer came here to ticket me. He gave me a ticket for my flag. Not being permanent flagpole and the other ticket was for that flagpole. Which i don't have and then i realized exactly what they're doing they put the american flag handheld. You know three four five six pleasure you would see on the side of a road. He would see that summit theory basically under their ordinance. You can't put the summitry. That's basically how i display them and so i figured out from their ticket the only way i can fly a flag in the village of prairie grow to be on a permanent flagpole which i need to apply for to the village and flagpole needs to be fifteen feet from property so i question about it and i got back no explanation but i realized that they put regular flags under the sign code which i did violate if that was the case solution. Today i got to inject here. Terry i mean a flag is an assign flag not assigned and just the secondary thought on that is. I look up. The village. cold and basically under ornamentation and. there's coding i'm reading the specifically very short Under under decorations states ornaments and trimmings displayed in connection with nationally recognized holidays and local festivals about the fourth of july to me is a federal national holiday. I can express my in my appreciation for holiday but putting a flag out so when the village manager came to my restaurant he actually wrote in in his own print on the ordinance which is not part of the ordinance. But it's part of his explanation to me. Because i must seem to be unintelligent. It says the american flag is not either one of these so it's not an ornament or it's not a trimming because under that portion of the code. I can leave out. The american flag thirty days prior to the fourth of july. So they hand wrote this in the under this violation also retired people listening to this all over the country. And i want you to help me understand and help our audience listening throughout the country outside of illinois an inside illinois. What's really driving this in other words. It can't just be about power. We have seen people on the left. Say the american flag triggers them. It makes them think of january. Sixth it makes them think of the police and that makes them upset is that what's really behind this terry. But we have a new village president..

It's a movie it's a script then that the reason. Why they jeremy irons they put him right through here on the radio. A guy calls it. Tell me he. I think he left a bomb in a school. And yeah i know jackass tell me. Let's put born bombing. Yeah they're getting through is very difficult sometimes these days. People don't know that it's easier to get through sometimes because not as not as many people call people tax now the phone is kind of a relic most people's lives. What's up so i've been thinking about that. So do you think like. Let's say you were still in movie. Elvis right you think you would have gotten called into the boss's office after your show that day like why don't you put that call through man like they were running around the city car. You'll put the z. One hundred might flag on on the mike and then the producer said no. We're not gonna put either of them. Sit down and do the wow is pretty funny and you would think a movie of that. Caliber production of that caliber with not forget the directors named the producers. Amy huge huge. That it would be like eighty million people on set and they. They have fifteen different angles. It was just like sit down and say this. I go home. I'm really that's how you make these fifty billion dollar movie. What's scary jerry. Bruckheimer that his name l. Were you talking to him. Live though or are they just dropped you know. They had a stand. In playing. The part of jeremy irons to stand in had a british accent. It was the strangest thing so then they will come back and forth. It wasn't the two of you having a real dialogue in real time. You know it was. It was standard i would. I don't know how many years ago yeah there. It was my movie career. Wait was joel. Silver or lawrence gordon produce. John was the director and he did predator back in the day. It's this the The producer guide. Whatever the first one you mentioned. I dunno anyway Tell i'm really into my movies. Have you guys ever been in a film. I was in a film with you. I just ran around a lot screaming. And then there's revenues nascar's great mine was supposed to be like an onscreen thing and it ended up back in the background on tv. Set in the back of the room. Great somatic must never ever again boycotted wanted to bring on searing for the next the next one i know they man. I can't tell you. I was so serious. During the filming of shark nato three and i was nursing. That just kept laughing. There was a part i mean. We're laughing screaming and running from this fake ball. That's crushing all of us. "Interview them. I well I don't know that I would have access. I'm not going to try and get access cuz I like I would love to debate Michelangelo about this stuff because unlike Jordan klepper from The Daily Show, I have watched all of my lindell's movies. All of them all the way through people have watched me watched them, because I've done them live on my live stream. Every time he came out with a new one, I do the whole goddamn thing when when Jordan shows up and he's like, man, I'm not going to watch that. And that gives Mike Liddell, fuel wage. Now, granted, nobody needs to watch them. You can watch my take down if you want to but you don't you're not going to learn anything and they're all the same movie, I'll just tell you this like he's rehashing the same bullshit and the later movies are busy taking the parts of the first one that he thinks worked or that test. Well and just doing something focused on those, right? And in the last one, he literally just had dead. White hat hacker that he alleges works for him that used to work for the government. That's you know, it's taken a note to America or something who won't show his face on camera. He's like you know without talking to Linda lennis a guy that Lindale hired. There's going to be a record of the company is and its employees. I don't know what the hell and I think the guys just drifting Lyndell and doesn't want his face on camera talking Lindo. "Whatever. I just never got into pink flag, and I'm not. I'm not a big fan, either. What the hell you play this work Because he's a legend. I'm just kidding. Just couldn't a couple names for you, Dave from the Baltimore Orioles that I should have remembered because they both ended up playing for the Angels. Bobby Grich. Doug DeCinces. Oh, yeah. Bobby grich. Big, strong, dude. Yep. The Angels got both those guys. Doug distance, eh? After that, that run who was under staffed? By the way, That's the Oriole team. Why can I not remember? Uh, was tippy Lopez on that? Um I think Palmer was, but they had a horse. They were heading that serious three games to one and I was there was a ghost loving it. That wasn't the year they had 4 20 game winners. Remember that back in the sixties was McNally Palmer kwei. Our way are in another guy. You're asking about the Orioles 17 19. Dennis Martinez Martinez, Mike Flynn again. Mike Flag wanted three wins planning Your left hander Steve Stone, Scott McGregor and Jim Palm. Scott McGregor was also there. Guy Palmer was towards the end of his End of his run. I think about then Eddie Murray was their best hitter. Has there ever been A switch hitter. More prolific than Eddie Murray. Think Eddie Murray has the most home runs the metal. Uh, Was making. No Mickey wouldn't swear He was a lefty whom I think I can manage. All right handed here. Who am I thinking of on the Yankees? That was a switch. Switch hitter that That's a good question that might have been Doc manage. No, it wasn't dark marriage. Remember, Doc manage. Remember the name? Who's the Yankee? That they get into switching wives. Was that was that, Doc manage? I hope I didn't just know Tag Doc. Manage. It was Uh, Fritz was yeah. Kitsch. Mike, Check it again. Jim Peterson Peterson. Fritz Peterson? Yep. Sorry, Doc. S sorry. It says for swapping wives and Children. What? Yeah, that's what you mean. You switch swap. They just They fell in love with the other guy's wife. And they just said, Hey, what do we do this? You go down the block. And here's the key and they switched. Family's weird, right. That's right. Yeah. How'd that work out? I wonder if I'm looking at well, that I don't know. It does, it says here. Mickey Mantle was a switch hitter, Dave Yeah, it was okay. I think you said he was right handed. No, Mickey was a switch here. That's what I thought. But I think Eddie Murray had the most home runs. Of any switch hitter. This is Mickey. Manic. Mickey. Finished with what? 55? 36 36? Yep. Okay. What did Murray get? Think Eddie Murray had more. Mrs Mantel remains the only switch hitter to reach 50 homers in a season. Twice. Many home runs. Did Eddie Murray have 5 36 54 for Murray five before and then Chipper Jones, 4 68, Carlos Beltran, 4 11 and Mark Teixeira. 400 so making so many top five switch, so Mickey Mantle had the most home runs of any Switch hitter. That's what I thought. I'll be darned you're right. Why did I think Eddie Murray won some sort of award is the most prolific switch hitter in baseball history. It was a good one. He was one of the best. Mickey Mantle and Mickey's his career. The last couple years of his career were bad. There was a career right at 300 hitter. But imagine if you would have taken care of himself and he could have played at a high levels really was 36 37. Yeah, he would have destroyed all the records. Great speed. And I know he was your favorite player of Yeah. Mickey Mantle bat later in life, he regretted the way he lived. And apologize to everybody publicly. About how he lived his life chasing women drinking Had no regard for his body, then respect the God given talent that he had And he was still great. I told that story had Eamonn Back the in the early part of my radio career. Had Mickey Mantle on for one hour. But, uh, in person? Nope. On the phone, but still good, though. Yeah. I mean, I'm pinch myself. I'm thinking Yeah, I'm talking to my childhood hero in baseball, At least by the way, Peterson is still married to Suzanne kick it since 1974 worked out. Yes, 1974. This happened in 72 when they swapped swapped Y 46 years they've been married leakage in Maryland. So tried it on didn't fit, But they said that they just happen to have two different cards, and he's like you buried with her. And then they said they tried it again the next night, and then they realized they liked each other's wives. More. Good lord. And so they kept the kids stay with the mom. Kids, So they switched kids too. Yes. So the kids Dad's dead, So the kids went with the mom, whichever dead So the dead switched kids. Oh, my lord. It's a during the party. We had a couple of beers. Why don't you write with Mike to do the diner in Fort Lee? Man? I mean I had and that's as they say how the story goes. Can you imagine that? I couldn't give my kids up. I mean, either and then away Ron Swoboda Swoboda. But I said that he was at the same party was my first reaction. I had a solid marriage. Sounds like okay, that wouldn't likely happen to me. It's probably what happened to a lot of people. But I remember that was the seventies not too far from the sixties. So I wonder how often that happens. It couldn't have been very office like four times since then. I remember there was a there was a family in my neighborhood. The The one family lived up on the hill and the other one's lived at the bottom of the driveway and crazy family, and they swapped husband and wife. I don't think they switched kids, but like what? The one wife married the other husband, and then the husband married the other wife. So I know it happens, but I can't imagine that's I mean, he said. When we were prevalent, we figured the kid should stay with their mothers. So the kids went with the mom to the other family. Mm. Weird though. Don't you think that's weird? Yes, I think, yeah, that that that would be the That would be the pure definition of weird e. I mean, there's no other way to describe that. And that's the deal breaker for me giving up my kids. I don't care almost twice. You said that I got a text from deal your wife like, what does that mean? Twice you mentioned? I couldn't give up my kids. I don't care how hot the woman was, or you were hot for her. You have to give your kids up. You're not giving them up fully. You're still gonna be in touch with your kids deal would like to know that there was a comma. Behind your statement or not a period. I'm not Joe. I'm not giving up my kids. I'm sure she is. But this is really interesting developing the fact that they're saying Pennsylvania had 200,000 more votes counted. In the 2020 election than actual voters. And if you remember there was that overnight spike of like 600,000 mail in ballots that 570,000 when they were counted, went fighting. And then 3000 wants a trump. "Doesn't that sound good? Well, we get those titles every every We have a lot of a lot of VPs of V p eo v F. Yeah, all these titles with these letters like what is that? We got in charge of ending. Um, yesterday was Bobby Bania Day, by the way, which is the greatest baseball story ever the man's 57 years old in every July 1st he gets a check from the New York mats for just almost $1.2 million we'll get set said payment once a year until I think well after he's dead at this point, because it's like 70 to 2035 or something like that is that the deal is struck. You could make more money than anybody who's actually playing the game now purpose here. The best. I love it. That's a that's a great deal. All right, so I could only imagine. What's going to happen when they open the game's up and you know people are going to the games. The stuff that you have to do to get into the ballpark right now. Temperature check aural, rectal or otherwise you have to wear Has Matt suit. You've got to breathe through an oxygen tank. All the things you have just to be able to go and cover the game to get the games on the radio. You see that in my hand he's got and 1/2 pages, single spaced. Instructions on how to get into the ballpark. You're going to mess this up. You're going to get banned and we're sitting Upstairs. Right? Then imagine when the players they have builders 100 pages. One of the highlights or there's some of the things you look and go. What you got to what? Well, the biggest highlight is no more locker room access. Okay. No more field access. Basically all the interviews with all the players with the manager with coaches are all be zoom. There's there's really going to be no interaction with with the players at all. There's you know, they're keeping them pretty trouble now that he's returning. How second get Theseventy WW Mike flag in their next to Jeff Pakoras elbow. Zoom. I guess they have a big one. What is the corrugated as Fox sports Going? Todo just zoom sent. The whole thing is going to be. Oh, it's gonna be really where Jimmy Day and you're not gonna have the you know they're sitting out there, and people are banging on the aluminum table in front of the making all sorts of noise, either. And he's got this that he may do that by himself. He's had me coming over to his house, and I just get two hands and started banging on his countertop certainly loves he does love that, anyway. All right, baseballs back the workouts start in full swing Tomorrow, G v P. And then what about practical parking Mason that all starts tomorrow? So they reported yesterday, all had to go through Corona virus testing. There was some Scattering of guys taking a little BP throwing that kind of stuff. But nothing organized..

"I get to do a lot of that stuff with them as well more of a is at the race track, because they don't live in North Carolina through an Indie and certainly they were doing indycar in the early days that I was doing. In as a driver, but they both came over during the infinity stuff and I got to know them both during the xfinity series as well so really unique, just the relationship that I can have all because in a way I've worked with them from the other side as well but in particular Matt, because it's been there longer mentioned the two thousand eleven Darlington race, and it also ties into Matt because he told me this and I wanted to see if it was true, he said that speaking of that interview lane interview that he gave you the Mike Flag He normally we'll do that, he will. Will give that sometimes to new winners. Do you still have that? Do you remember that I do have that? Yeah, it actually was in Colorado for very long time kept our home in Colorado, and actually still spend a lotta time live in their going I was back driving for teams out east here in just recently got rid of that house. I want to say maybe two years ago or or year and a half ago. Give or take a little bit of time, but when we got rid of it, it was sitting kind of in my officer on a shelf. You WanNa. Call it that with some other. Items on display and it came back to north. Carolina has to be honest with you. I don't know I. Think it's I'm looking around my office right now. And I thought I thought I got put in here, but must have got somewhere else so I do definitely still have that, though and it it is, it has met signature on it, and it's it's kind of funny, I get a chuckle out of it because I. IF I had been being complete smarttalk, I would've from a first Fox rays taken and put that on the on the Mike Cause. Cause same Mike flags that will use the logos changed a little bit maybe but but generally speaking the same mic flags. We use now well. It's cool when you get little stuff like that that you can remember things by it is in e I. Guess out that's been. Matt's thing is with the new winner. Always always would give them that and I know how big I are Kellyanne and sometimes I wins as in the case of mine in the Cup series. You're only win or your second depending on where you stand on that, but We're to get into that. You Want WanNa. Save every memento that you can you WanNa save everything from that day, and from that moment I mean I still got the firesuits sealed up with shoes, gloves and I know which helmet was in a that stuff. It means something I mean. The the car itself actually is is still sitting Barney has that intact the exact way? It rolled off the racetrack I think they had to take the motor out and put a put something suffered in remoter, just because it was an RC are motorin and naturally they needed to keep that in the cycle of. Of which motors we ran that year, so outside of the mode resting the car is identical the what it was when it rolled off the racetrack, which is really cool, and he's got that in storage. In those moments, it might not mean something to anybody else twenty thirty forty years down the road, but it means something to you, and and those were those moments and memories the. I think we've all got him. You know the you don't forget about for different people. It's different memories Navy of baseball player. It's a it's a grand slam that he hit or maybe for you know somebody in the media it's..

"People in the news room here the people that actually make of the programming that I hope that you tune into on a regular basis and enjoy and I've got two of those of stars in the room with me right now but don't let that keep you from making a call to justice all around you had called I've got Scott Shaver here in Erica Erica angle are and I want you guys both to introduce yourselves and talk a little bit about because both of you I think of it because I go back to the print days I think of it like people having a beat now you don't call it beats anymore but you both have very different roles that you play here yeah we we kind of call it is I guess we call it a hub a gas you know and things that we pay attention to that we care about we we know you'll care about as a resident here in the bay area and Erica you are is the chief editor of the housing which is relatively new it's so you've been covering that issue for a long time mereka but now KQED is really gonna start focusing on it in a big way because it's such a huge issue that's right I'm so we just started in December we got launched with a very generous grant and now we're getting started on some you know it just reporting on the issues you know you guys might have heard about the moms for housing yeah I was fascinating your generous support helps us get out there I was able to assign a reporter Molly Solomon who has been reporting on what housing and security means what housing is a human right means you she's actually I just finished editing a piece for the web on that right now that I hate you guys this week well that's what I love this is the kind of thing we can afford to do when we have the money to actually have not only you but reporters that are assigned to dealing with what I think when you look at the studies you may know this a Scott if you look at the studies of what I thought upper mind when people in northern California housing is an incredibly important issue and we're devoting a lot of resources to covering it it is and if you like to support that kind of coverage you're KQED give us a call or you can text the word give to one eight hundred nine three seven eight eight five zero or you can put on line as well just go to KCET dot org slash donate and great one of things that I've been working on and it really is and I and I don't just say this because I'm here asking for money and support but it is really a privilege to work at a place like KQED because they give us the time and the resources to do things that I think most stations and news operations just don't have or are willing to give in just one quick example yeah the I I'm the politics and government editor night might team including guy Mars Roddy we just finished a forty hour plus series of conversations with Jerry Brown it which we turned into an eight part podcast in a radio broadcast called the political mind of Jerry Brown that took a lot of time a lot of resources and KQED said do it because they knew the upper level management the folks here Ethan Lindsey Vinnie Tong Holly Quran and Michael is a pain they know that those are the kinds of things keep UT is known for and wants to be known for and they give us the time to do it and that's the same with the with the area that you cover Erica I think people here a four or the an eight minute piece hours of work that when it that that's right a four minute piece takes about a week to produce you know and the reporter has to write the piece the editor has to come and look over at there's fact checking this going back and re writing because you know there's no such thing as good writing on the first draft so it you know that again this is Scott was saying these are resources and were able to do this because you have supported KQED and the journalistic ambitions here at this public radio station by calling us at one eight hundred nine three seven eight eight five zero or go to KQED dot org slash don't you pick a level of support that's comfortable for you you will find all sorts of fun ways to think yourself for doing that everybody who comes in at the five dollar a month level or higher is going to get a couple of dozen KQED decals celebrating every facet of what we do here a fun way to thank you for doing the right thing we literally can't have talented people like this on board committing their lives to covering these areas without the kind of financial commitment I think a lot of people you guys know this don't realize that most of our money comes from individuals volunteering that support and that's going to be important to you guys does it give you I will often proud of saying yeah I give you some kind of editorial freedom that's not that's not baloney right no it really isn't we aren't beholden to the ratings although we're fortunate enough to have a very large audience in in the bay area but you know what I noticed Greg and I'm sure Erica would say the same as when I go out especially here in the bay area but really throughout California and I walk up to somebody who I don't know they don't know me and they see the KQED Mike flag they wouldn't you be surprised how many doors that opens people when they see that it's KQED they they feel like they can trust us to talk with us not take what they tell us out of context or the slanted one way or the other you know we genuinely want to listen and I think that they've come to appreciate if I can humbly say or not so humbly that you know they they look to us for that kind of substantive the context of stories the historical perspective as well as looking forward and what with the you know what the what the stakes are for an election or for a ballot measure for example no I think it's so true we've prided ourselves in doing that for decades and now you know Erica it's more important than ever because there are you know the newspapers which used to have the beats that covered so many facets of what was going on in northern California they're evaporating they are and and and public radio is is trying to fill those those holes you know we're trying to be both the news of record but the storytellers and the people who get to sit down and analyze what's going on and really make that connection with our audience about what is important to you and that's the reason why we're asking for your support today and you know I think here Erica one of things that makes your coverage so special of housing is it's not just about statistics and numbers but it's about the people you know we hear the voices of folks who are affected by housing policy or lack of housing policy lack of construction of housing homelessness and it's the kind of thing that it's hard to get from a newspaper but you hear it when you're listening to KQED in you guys I'm so glad that you guys have been devoted your life to doing that but you know what they can't do what they do here and do such a good job in such a coveted job of doing without the financial support that guess what you bring us if you.

"Which I was reading about his mind my girls were younger yeah you know what in order to to the extent that she's on our side let's let's embrace that and to the extent that she was off and and and directions that we think might be a little too militaristic let's let's you know speak out about them but I don't think that she's going to be a factor in this in this election all over you know you never know in time thanks for the heads up on on on that that's fascinating stuff and thanks for watching this on YouTube all the way over there in Israel thank you John for the call back it is this is coming up on seventeen minutes past the hour this is the Thom Hartmann program we'll be back with more your calls in just a moment as anything goes Friday here in the job market program or we dared ask is Walmart a person and we dare to say chance and welcome back Ryan watching free speech TV in Springfield Missouri a right what's on your mind Hey John it's Brian and thank you so much for what you do normally I'm listening via online because I am a blueberry in the strawberry patch and the opportunity to to to find locally so listen the inner W. C. P. T. or Debbie our dear WTT and in those contrary but today happened we often caught you on free speech TV and notice there is behind you what appears to be a box or a I don't know what it is maybe set of sticky notes when an Air America logo and that kind of got my got me to waxing the nostalgia Air America radio yeah this is they're called Mike where this call Mike flags here and there on the microphone in America yeah very good so and and I've been waxing nostalgic as I said about the the the heady days of Air America in their their top down business model and you know these days if you're going to if you're gonna listen to progressive talk radio or watch progressive talk television you do have some options but you have to do your homework in order to find them and and then make sure that your hello available to watch and that's why I tell people at the end of the show everyday to please tell our friends about progressive media yes Sir what it is in your opinion how much with future of progressive media how do we I don't know that we're ever going to be in in a point where you know where the hand these Malone browsing rooms and and whatnot and their their stranglehold on talk radio but and we go from here how do we get this message out to where talk radio progressive talk radio and and progressive television is is the rule not the exception hi it on the is the thing that really that has really there there's two things that have largely her progress in talk radio aside from the collapse of our American and Arab Americans big sin their biggest sin was that they were under funded that they lost eighteen million dollars in seven years and fox lost four hundred million dollars in five years you know it's like than the markets just weren't deep enough and they could say they didn't last long enough to start making a profit but the other thing was in nineteen ninety six when Clinton signed the telecommunications act prior to that it was against the law for any one entity to own more than a relatively small number radio stations as I recall it was like thirty or forty and and as soon as that telecommunications act was passed clear channel went from being a small regional owner of radio station stoning almost a thousand radio stations at one point there over a thousand and and you know they had an institutional bias toward conservative talk now when Air America was on the air we were leasing we releasing clear channel stations and that's why when you know later on in the life of Air America when it Romney took over clear channel or being capital took over clear channel they started dropping America stations and every time there was a luncheon they would drop their American stations and that was with that also led to the death of Air America but frankly I think that number one we need to repeal or reverse the telecommunications act which I'm not I don't think it's going to happen tomorrow the other thing that could happen is Mike Bloomberg was to take two billion dollars and by clear channel you know we have a chance we have a good chance yeah and and and you know just put progressive stations are owned by cumulus in in.
