"A major residential building in the United States just collapsed to the ground. I mean, I mean, I know of the we've buildings have been imploded and buildings that have been condemned, eventually crumble. I mean, I just can't think of for nowhere. I don't mean like 9 11. When you flew a plane into a building, they just out of nowhere collapsed to the ground. Paul says, even in Venice, when they're at water they don't seem like flowed into the ground anyway. The terrible tragedy and Surfside, Florida, where that condominium complex Collapsed to the ground is that there's all sorts of stories about people that this is going to kill the Florida condo market. People who live in condos along the coast are freaking out. Some don't want to go back. That to me. Is that irrational here? If something happens once every 100 years, I think we're probably safe for 100 years. But because it's a new thing, people now wonder Well, this building fell are all of them going to fall? Uh, to me a rational response to be Well, let's have a few more come down before you start worrying about it rather than think that this is simply an extremely rare occurrence. What happens is we are emotional people as I've explained, and we engage in emotional thinking an emotional thinking always leads to bad decisions. I can think of no area that where this is more true than love. People have an emotional attachment to someone, and they will often make decisions that are terribly irrational. Whenever you do something for short term pleasure, and in the case here of this building, this is a short term fear. When you make a short term decision, you're likely to make a long term decision because there's something well, I just I just want to make me what do what makes me feel better. This will make me feel better right now. Ah, your feelings. That makes you feel better right now, But over the years the rest of your life it's going to make you feel very, very bad. The person who's got an addiction problem on well, I know I need to get off the heroin. But I really want it now. I'll feel good now. No. Now you're even more addicted Three hours later, when you're done, and the buzz is worn off of you. Etcetera. Getting back to the point that I make about keeping this information from people. Well, we can't let them know this. They might not get the vaccine. Yeah, but let me help you out. Public health officials and so odd Why will they ever trust you again? Now that they know you're keeping things from them? Just put out all the information, put it out accurately. How many cases of my Al Qaeda itis either. Have we linked it to the vaccine? Yes, sir. Don't let people do the numbers. The more people get information, the more likely you are eventually to make a good decision. Mhm. Congressman Jim Jordan has a piece that appears on the website the federalist dot com today. He's referring to The latest batch of emails obtained under a Freedom of Information Act requests dealing with Anthony Fauci and The origins of coal bid. Jordan is suggesting Fauci has been lying all along, and Fauci's refusal to answer questions about what he knew about the Wuhan connection Initially Is leading many to the conclusion that this has been a cover up that we have been hosed all a log and that Fauci is a corrupt and dishonest person who has been misleading Assange Covid. To cover his own but and to cover for the Communist Chinese. Let me share some paragraphs from Jordan's column. Recently released emails show that Dr Anthony Fauci new key facts about the origins of Covid 19 in January of 2020, But at that critical time when the country was first learning about the virus, Fauci chose not to share the facts with Americans. Instead, he acted to conceal them on January 31st of 2020. Remember January It wasn't until march that we freaked out over Covid in the United States. That was when that NBA game was canceled right before it was to start and so on. I've told the story in late February of 2020. Last year, I travel to Florida. Some people would Marron masks that was it. Within a month, Everything was shut down. So January 31st 2020 at 10. 32. PM Fauci received an email from a British researcher, Dr Kristin Anderson. Dr Anderson has received millions of dollars of grants from the NIH in the email. In the email. He warned that Dr Fauci One has to look really closely at all the sequences to see that some of the features potentially look engineered. Eddie Holmes, Bob Gary, Mike Ferguson and myself all find genome inconsistent with evolutionary theory. Two hours later at 12:29 A.m. on February 1st. Dr Fauci emailed his longtime deputy, Dr Hugh Washing clause. In the email. Fauci attached a paper written by Dr Ralph Barrack and Dr Jang Lishi, the so called Batwoman from Wuhan Institute of Virology. The paper highlighted taxpayer funded gain A function research and coronavirus is conducted by the W I, D Fauci told arching clause. It is essential that we speak this morning. Keep your cell phone on, Read this paper. You will have task today that must be done. Urgency intensity two hours later at 2 48 am, Fauci said Another email to Dr Robert Catholic Catholic was the Trump appointed assistant secretary of preparedness and response at the Department of Health and Human Services attached to that email was an article that downplayed the lab leak. And attached for an evolutionary origin to Covid 19, Fauci simply wrote. Bob, this came out today gives a balanced view. No urgency. No intensity. Now the point congressman Jordan is making She's advised the 10 30 at night. January, the 31st This doesn't look like it occurred naturally. Fauci, then contacts is complicated. "Mike Ferguson and he was talking about how they were looking at maybe trying triples and doubles supposed to regular for aside curling to reduce the number of people in the shed at anyone time you do you think that's also effective. Measure or does it not matter as much I I I think it could be. Again the the major things you wanna stay away from. I mean I like the way to see that they say the best way to avoid getting the viruses to avoid virus completely. So that means not going to indoor places where there's going to be crowded monitor people. So the if you're going to have to be indoors fewer amount of people is probably going to be a lot better than if you were to have a full amount of people inside of a building. for two hours or however long the the league draws going to be. Are there any other recommendations you'd you'd think of for a cluber or a team? That's Kinda thinking curling again You know. What I asked, I asked infection control people the other day some things that they could do they said. Air Handling is is important. So if you can get your club air handling so that you're maximizing the number of air changes in the in the club and maybe increasing your filtration. Those are things that are going to be important. I think limiting if you're if you're a team that's GonNa, play limiting your your bubble you know something we hear a lot I mean that's just not for teams before everybody limiting your bubble to to the amount of people that you see in. Really you have to get really intimate with everybody in the way that you gotta know every person kind of that they're seeing they have to be open about it and did they opened their bubble a little bit up to for someone who might be more risky and if that's the case then You have to be able to accept that risk that someone might have You know expose themselves through risk behavior, and so if you can minimize that by having tighter bubble and. for your team or for the Group of people you're going to curl with that would always be better too. I think. So maybe not subbing all the time. Played as play with one team and. lets you play, right? Yeah. So I guess the other the other big question everyone has is, when is the pandemic GonNa? End? So, I'm not need depressed a little bit unfair question solvency nobody knows. But what's your sense like? It's just like? The the most pessimistic versus just the new normal and it could go on for years. Some people are very optimistic is going to be a vaccine in the next month or saw that'll be kind of a real game changer. What's what's your sense of? Wet It's GonNa take to end the pandemic and get us back to normal wish at least for curling curling sake. So I think right now what we're seeing if we talk about current state. Research to see potentially the second wave coming everywhere That's where we're seeing the of cases and this was predicted to come around this time actually..

"Of in between and part of it's that the really competitive teams now. Basically not supposed to drink at all and are there to win, and so they're basically once the once their games are down there out of the rink. Now they'll have their drank having a t if you're having a beer, but the kind of gone and off so there's not much there's long-term socialize post-game Trent. Let's put it that way I know. Got His curler still know how to party because I see our friends from Dakota Curling, Club Team Sealand they they go to Scotland every year to I can't remember the name of the the Spiel that they go to but they go there every year during normal times in. We're good time is had by all it looks like. Oh i. mean if you WanNa fight of this, there's definitely ways in places to go have a party in Scotland like there's no There's no doubt about that. I wouldn't say it's it's all like T in shortbread. Put it that way. Not, like ups Southampton now we're very very refined in Southampton. We've never tarnish the roaring game with a pint No. But the thing is it's not A. Part of it's like where the rinks are located a lot of the rings in Scotland are out in the country and so one question they asked Mike was about drink driving laws in Scotland. Is basically down to zero. Now, if you have any alcohol, you're getting a ticket. On the penalties Preece Veer Very. So the the episode that we talked about with the sketch when right? Yeah but I mean I think candidates still point eight or something. For insists link action. On the point of war whatever. So it's it's but it's still like that's probably one drink right? Point blue point four point I think. For his data point Oh four. Point obviously point eight would be possible. Point Oh eight so. It's it can Scotland, is basically nil and so that that kind of came in a few years ago and I see the point was made to me several times in Scotland's if you've got to be careful that if you drink a lot the night before. You Get up in the morning and you get in a car, you might still you might still be over the limit. So it's actually Kinda discourages you from even having a night being. Going up before drinking within getting up in the morning say six seven hours later, and you still might be way over the limit. So. that's kind of an issue to. But as we've said before maybe. Maybe, that's something curling needs in order to grow in in other areas right Yeah pick up. There's other ways of building the social aspect. Yeah I don't think it's everyone's gotta get plastered for current to be a good time but there's gotta be there's like I i. I strongly believe that for. Most people. even. Dream of making it on the Olympics just isn't achievable and so if. It's Mustang. It's Olympics are nothing but I think for a lot of people who are kind of competitive they feel like they've gotta have something to shoot for to justify. The money suspending the time and all that and I don't think it has to be much but has to be some kind of stakes. Right? They've got to feel like they're playing not just the Spiel but a championship or if they're playing a bond spiel, there's something that he can win. That's cool. Be It a prize or cash or something right and they want to have a chance to have fun in some way shape or form outside of just playing the Games. Yup, and so we will. We will keep an eye on this tournament if it if it looks like it's going to go in go ahead, which it sounds like it is will try to preview it. Maybe not in the same to our way that we previewed a reader nationals but here in the US, but we'll definitely give it. Give it the attention. It deserves Jonathan thanks for thanks for talking to Mike and Thank you to Mike Ferguson for taking the time to talk to us in. inform us about the current state of of curling in Scotland is they return to play and get it get a new new exciting termine up up and running..

"I think I mean I've got some other I think that's another I think partly harks back to Jerry's interview where one of the things they don't really do in Scotland for whatever reason is a lot of those events don't. Accumulate points that they don't really tie to the world curling. Team ranking system. And I think there's value for all kinds of teams accumulating points right? You are. You even saying at the start why should accumulate points and try to points chase even appoints or frozen right now ryan. But I think that that's a very low hanging fruit is. Sign those events up to the points to simply registration with curling so that to me is like a very low hanging piece of fruit. I think perhaps. melding the social with the competitive a bit more I think one of the things it's done better in North America to be honest is especially the US the US's best at this is. Basically, Saturday the bond spiel should just be a big party 'cause most of the teams are getting bounced probably two thirds of the fielder out. One thirds go on and it'll probably take it seriously although not always but usually the club should be having some event going on on Saturday night during the last round of Qualification Games where it's kind of a big party to get people owed socializing and I think in Europe, I, think that part of the socializing things a lot less not done as well. I think making it not just. You know if it's a twenty four team. Assuming everyone's equal your odds of winning it or like four percent. So you know assuming you're kind of playing average you're GonNa win one or twenty, times Or Twenty Times enter. So winning a bond spills not You know it matters it's great and there's a lot you know You can do it, but you've got to offer something to the teams that. are kind of less likely to win to get them to come sign up and get more their three games work in southern plus the other thing that's got to be built into this and that that's what Mike was mentioning bring back the social side of it like having a dance dinner isn't it to be anything fancy, but there's something to keep people engaged in the Saturday night. And that was the big takeaway for me was to to hear that from Mike. That was really said to here because of you know getting into the sport here in the US a lot of the the the social aspect in a lot of the traditions that I was taught when I first started curling knowing when you ask, why do you do this? The answer would always be well, 'cause the Scots do it. So it's you know it's sad to hear that at the social aspect at least. At least in what Mike is seen has kind of started to go away there. Yeah I think the post game I still think in Scotland actually the game drink. Is Still, pretty much on whenever planets spiel there. It happens I'd say always are almost our waste and that goes from like the best of I play a team on the program. They'll sit down afterwards in half a chat so that there's none of this. All I'm on team gb not having a drink with you which I think in some ways, the team GB fires in Scotland or a lot more. approachable than even the kind of elite teams in in Canada right so that that's a nice part of it, but I think the event thing is the events often don't have much going on on the Saturday or kind.

"That the teams like that and also I think t I think one of the big challenges is. Is If. You're saying coming out of juniors. Let's say you didn't win the Scottish National Championship when you say you know top five top six teams in. Scottish. Juniors when you're twenty one. What happens to your problem? You're not going to be selected by team. GB, right away. do wander off and do other things. Do you of keep playing in things? What what things are there for you to play in and then what happens to that group of curlers in their twenties right that One of the effects of going so hyper professional and going to play down system is. There's nothing for that Kinda Group of curlers in that age period where making the jump from juniors to full on adults pretty tough right? He was Tyler Tardy three time world champion yet a decent. Kind of season on tour last year. Right. But he certainly wasn't playing in the brier or making slams every week right so what it takes time for a team in that age group to develop the point where they're able to be competing at the slam level. And, if you take away opportunities for those teams to compete, they don't have a chance to develop either. So Jonathan? Basically. What? Was Interesting about this interview was that they want to take it. Beyond just Britain they wanted they WANNA have a European players championship that was that was really interesting to hear. European one I think that's I. think that because they're similar dynamics going on other countries to right I think there's S- particularly Sweden. Sweden's you know it's It's actually got thirty ranks I. Think it's probably outside of North America. Probably the largest curling country, it's probably between Switzerland right. And it systems fully professionalised now but there's a lot of good curlers that aren't going to get an opportunity to knock off Hassle Burger a dean. But Might WanNa play in something else and so this this event could be kind of opportunity for them. Yeah you see that at the Swedish championship every year where outside of a Dean Hassle Burger, it's a pretty competitive event but then you have these two teams that are clearly head and shoulders above everybody else yet, and so it. It's what do you do with those team? So they have something to play in and can kind of growth that that next year. So I hope that there's a European version of this and that maybe Switzerland and Sweden and some of the other curling powers said their teams maybe some of the developing countries see this is an event that they can compete in as well. It sounds like what we need is. Curling's version of the rucker. That would be awesome. I think you'd have to explain what the Rucker is. So the record is this summer basketball tournament held at Rucker Park in Harlem and it was just known for its wear. NBA. Stars of the past kind of honed their skills like Doctor J. played their earl, the Pearl Monroe Steph Marbury played in it Kareem played in it. You know all these all these guys from from the area played in this tournament and Kinda made their names. Made their names before they before they got famous in this tournament, it's kind. It's an amateur tournament. Each team's Kinda believe each the teams basically sponsored by a company in Inter Inter their team in the tournament. In occasion, will occasionally you'll get big games or former MBA guys who play in this every year. So I mean that'd be Kinda cool you. YOU PICK UP A. Pick up pick up one professional onto your team to to go in and try to win the tournament. Are. Are they do they cap the number of pros and the rocker is basically anything goes I think it's whoever is willing to paying it playing it. Can play now obviously, a lot of MBA guys aren't going to play in it because if you get injured, that's GonNa cost you a lot of money. Yeah. So It's true but Katie famously played in it awhile ago I guess a few years. Yeah Yeah Yeah I think it'd be good I think I think yes. Something like that I think there's I think a lot of other sports have a sense of place a lot of their events and curling doesn't really. like you know like in Golf, you have the masters, the Augusta national right you have like. For Water Sport or you have the bowl games radio, the rose. Bowl in college football right like a lot of biases have events that get tied to the venue or the location, and I don't feel like in Curling A. Events where location like that right now, the closest you have is the players at Maple Leaf Gardens, I, think. Yeah I think that's kind of growing as a tradition but it's kind of weird because I really feel the slams Kinda stamp on that by by when they schedule it and then they have been when they added the. Humpty cop afterwards, it almost Almost. or whatever it's called the called. The humpty. Become whatever it's called. The Champions Cup, and then it also feels that the players is been. When it first came out late nineties early, two thousands it was the kind of capstone for the cash feel season. And now it just feels like another plan because there's so many slams in there on all the time right and then the Champions Cup. In, some sense feels a bit more special because he had to win to get into it so. I. Think that's something the slams gotta look at is fixing that that event up. Keeping it the keeping in Toronto. So. What's the big prize for winning the British players like let's let's assume the European thing doesn't happen year one mid hopefully, it happens down the line but let's say this year they can't get the European thing go the European players shift. Egypt going. But what's the big prize for winning the British players? That that's interesting question I think of it doesn't go on to another event. and. It doesn't have a significant monetary prize attached to it. It's hard to explain why would sign up for it. And to be honest I played in Scotland and kind of a Scottish curling tour a fair bit. those events are struggling. They struggled a crack twenty teams these days if they're lucky so. And it's not for lack of good teams or go play spills and say Aberdeen or dumfries a local team. That's good like not like like good for whatever like you you would drop them into. T events or? You know a cash league in Canada and they they'd be they be competitive. They won't be making fools out of themselves. It'd be a good team. You sit down and talk after the game. Let's. Don't see any point in signing up to anything because none of it goes anywhere. They don't see the point in going out and stealing because the points don't get you anything. so There's a bunch of people out there. That are perhaps looking for a reason to curl, and if there's a way to kind of add some meeting in significant playing, you might get more people back out and participating again. Do you think for Scotland. Maybe. It's getting some of the the more well respected names that are kind of outside of the British program to play in that will that will legitimize it maybe make.

"Thank you very much. Thank you Jonathan. Jonathan. What makes what makes this tournament different in? What are they doing anything to specifically exclude the quote Unquote Professional Curler the fully-funded person like lead for Scotland teams like team Mohit. who they are. They're they're professional curlers would what is keeping them from from participating in this event? I don't think anything I think they probably will be busy. And there's I don't think there's any points attached to have no interest in kind of competing in that. I know. The Kyle Smith rank I'm not sure if they're gonNA play in it but Kyle Smith's one of the people on the website who's been linked with the Organization of it. So some of the this isn't I guess just a bunch of differ slightly on their knees right? It's good competitive exactly that I think one of the questions that came out of the Scottish curling decisions, decisions. There's actually A lot of good curlers curlers that would be kind of known to the you know fans of international curling that have played and represented. Scotland in the last five, six years who simply because of decisions that team Gb's made about the squad No, longer have anywhere to play and kind of feel like well, what do I have to compete for? Right? So we're not even talking about. Like spiring. Curves Kinda get to that next level certainly, they're kind of going to include the event but does basically this tiered of curlers who? You know normally would be able to qualify for the Scottish National Championship be quite competitive and potentially even win if they had a good week that that tears also kind of increasingly being squeezed out so. I think that cheer might participate for sure I I suspect the the team gb ones will just be too busy doing other things to to enter. The guys. Guys like you and McDonald who? Used to represent Scotland in other you know there are no longer a part of team GB, but I mean up until a couple of years ago I. saw him entering the Scottish championships is that kind of the deteriorate team that they're looking to bring back into into the fold here? Yeah. I. Think that.

The pressure on ice. Thanks to terminate chump each of Isis. Is is has has been a quite incredible. I mentioned daily are just this summer we've installed you ducting with being pitting a new filter. So to ensure that are out of altruism as clean as it can be in, it's coming tonight temperature's say so the science, the science of colleen that's a good way to the science of cuddling. I think cousin has has changed dramatically and let 'em. From when I started when I first bought the Ice Rink Stan Douglas. Device now the cutler's enjoy is is just just dramatically different, dramatically different all the equipment the people are using his different nice conditions and we all know the debates have gone on invite thoughts so we won't go into that but. The impact. A A say the biggest. The biggest and this is disappointing. The biggest stay change I've seen as high withheld lost the social aspect of it too not not not entirely that still a good nucleus of cartilage hula joy game and enjoy A. Drama after. And Day. Saw Good unfortunately that's that's not the that's not that's the norm many arriving for the Guillaume jumping in the cars and going home monotonous. Shyam. Sam. The that was one of such important part Guillaume and. At My, I think we do. Excuse my language, but we do our damndest to make sure we keep the social aspect of the going as much as you possibly can and I passed I think if we can do that that's when will attack people back into sport. They won't just becoming back for the game the becoming box because it's part of the life. Of the they stick Guillaume for for for a lengthy period of time. So, that's interesting. So why do you think that is I know in North America sometimes kind of older club members will say that drinking and driving laws kind of discouraged people about half a pint after the game in other people would suggest that it's You know rise of other distractions or other entertainment options. Do you think that's why there's been less of a focus on the social social aspect of the game in Scotland? It's a terrible confession, but there's no diaper drink-driving did. have an impact that's probably not socially appropriate to say ninety days but. That's about to the fact. Secondly, I also believe just the pace of life nowadays in the picture of modern day life nor everybody wants the best car in the base tweet. Goodson. The base time thing else. So everyone is just for, but with pace of life to the lifestyles and does not leave enough for leisure activities. Delays activities they their priority. So I wouldn't just blame it on on A. Driving into today said cannot munching drink because in all fairness, the vast majority of cargoes of soft drinks and coffee. And the blast majority device drinks are quite happy with the profit margins of those say those beverages are just as equally as a selling. So that's not so much I can say on it's more people's Titan pressures I, believe A. We've also noticed lace of. I know, but I started covering the station used to go on Dundee ice about I think who's Stated late or something like that eleven o'clock at night at a station. Night trying to get people like to even. Start, stay the night a complete difficult 'cause. They don't want to drive in the darker the of the snow or whatever ails lifestyles have changed I think that's probably one of the basically I can summarize it. So the other thing we're interested in 'cause we've been covering a lot of US curling post twenty eighteen when the Schuster rink with winning the gold on the men's side. My to a big spike in support for curling. US and a lot of interest. was there a similar? Change in Scotland when Rona Rhona. Martin back then. Won. The the goal back in two thousand and two did interesting Carleen go up in Scotland stay the same. What changes for that I did go up with any DIGHTON INSTRUMENT CODDLING It really was same. I I know. And also commentated on the Ama could always Samantha his story of of saying that. He knew he was headed the famous sports moment. Like the football, I think it's all over the and he prepared to pay for road thrown out. Final store would on he got so involved with stone going I shall type to his bike garches done. Good time. The journalistic Saturday at a to to to head off dose assay eves been doing a terrific job as well. Reports in a lot of a lot of journals and obviously has done exceptionally well for for Scottish cuddling. Asked you have many of many of the guys. And I have to say the ranks, Scotland hub hub hub obsolete two main decide there, and they will stanley hold own A. Through the championships. Unfortunately. It didn't last too long. Didn't last too long on Sunday. Olympics when with the Games getting in to the bonding, and that might only be one short children on the news at night at wedding steward of of. Somebody else thrown a store in is to win the game that's not enough to to encourage people into the game a and we have to cart on improving out coverage. Some people say over boring on TV if you're standing in the pulp and stocks, some guys, you know fight take cuddling a because of the Titan we take in the game to talk about stewards and talk about and all that is to it. So I think again the. Look, the bulks locate site the box, and see I we can. We can make a more attractive for for television people who understand cuddling. It's no problem atoll. We know what's going on, but for somebody new to cut link to pick up. The speed of the Guillaume I don't think it really really attracts people in chewed. So this. Wrap up is there any kind of final thoughts you have about what what changes you think curling make? I guess. Not grow the sport he said, but at least tread water for this year and then come back stronger after the pandemic ends. We'll help till the cops to the streets we just have to be so focused on the gosh routes I think. A great deal of developments at the league level a major teams after pay for the Olympics except and there's absolutely nothing wrong. The thoughts at all. However. I did times feel the passage labels being forgotten about. We aren't doing enough to attract people into sports on indeed when we do attract them, retain them getting him into clubs teamster get them. Compete. And likewise BCC as we've already banned should once we hope cutler that with any Wedding the local club leagues After here we need we need to get the moving forward button to a high level and simply because they. They they they don't foresee themselves entering the Scottish anything else like that. We ought to give them something that they can. They can strike for to to keep thought. Compared to said, I'm bishen going. So therefore, it's at both it's a buffet what could the grass roots on day a? Give. The. Middle Good I J developing again. Well thank you very much for joining us today Mike I. Wish you the best of luck with this new championship I. Think you're right it. It absolutely does address a need in the sport. I. Also wish you a lot of luck with. But. Serbia challenging season ahead. But hopefully, the restart for curling in Scotland goes smoothly. Well No. Thank you very much for letting me to. Say A few comments on. Can I just say tepid on a in Canada. Have a great season when you do get back on the Ice Sunday as I keep saying to everybody will we'll win the spot so we'll get they unable. "Okay so I think what kind of Zone a little bit here because it's so as we as you said, you're you're really targeting. I agree it's maybe amateurs can have a bit of a negative connotation, but we're certainly targeting people who aren't funded athletes. I think that's the kind of distinct right yellow. We've talked a lot of on our podcast about. What we find is a weird tension going on all over the world we're wondering if a similar thing going on in Scotland, which is as curling gets more popular in the Olympics a lot more TV exposure and has bigger and better events in the top team seem to be playing at a far higher standard. There actually seems to be less and less play at the club level. In fact, a lot of a lot of places club numbers are down. So you see a similar dynamic going on in Scotland. Tuncer questioned simply a the answer is yes and the reason for that would be a bit more complicated. Firstly, great to see cuddling the Olympics and skate seat teams competing. All all doing. Well, am I envy the TV coverage oven you have encountered. Coming off the plane once arriving ossified heading. I think it's called the stripper something. Ending up in a bar and here's a cuddling on the main TV aloke fire to lay the sweets that I thought I've had. Totally envy your your your your coverage that you get indeed over here all tied to subscribe to all the channels to watch it. And, fortunately, we don't get a great deal of coverage in a is just dumped one, a two competitions however recently am a the being a publications on Youtube as the watch. So Danta, question yes, I also think that. Whilst the money on other things going into into teams them to complete the highest level, which is great. A talk to people into into the sports affiliate I can is that through that process am I wouldn't suggest it's a encouraged more people onto onto club by on Again. I'll put my own hot taught would speak for the country I'll just speak for four for we have a tremendous a junior section around sixty seventy kids they sought to the morning and our coaches are absolutely terrific. They take them through and through the CDs of slums that we know of in Scotland. The under twelve fourteen to seventeen to twenty months. They. End Up competing the country, which is great pecking expedients. Unfortunately, there's dining site because it's the pants driving them into these competitions on those are the would normally be competing European woke license competitions out weekend. So they had away every second weekend doing something. You struggle them to get them into your own competitions, which which has become quite an issue and you find that these people aren't just stopped competing. Numbers was a number of certainly. It's quite hot to quantify a quantified numbers exactly one of the. Shows historically as being a man of Scottish cuddling and I know there was numbers of sets only fallen however not all cutler's members of Scottish cuddling and therefore. Sub Ice thinks may well be may well be growing. are finding Fisher. But I can't say if if if not hogging the microphone informed by can't see as. A covert has brought a unique set of problems in and I knew I rise by kings dining between twenty and fifty percent. Dumped it because we do have an aging population cuddling on couvert his obviously hit the eight, the age population, and some just do not want to take the risks to come back onto the ice this year by biggest the biggest fear of of icing because we've done surveys is that once to the Mr Year that may have lost to the sport forever. So I do think that any. Everyone is going to have a fresh set of challenges to face. So a rink owner what do you think an addition to this championship here you're organizing what other things do you think need to happen to to reverse some of these trends? In my business life I've been really believe in thinking the balks in just because that's the way it's being done doesn't mean the way it's always got to be done. Trying think about what can we do new? The attract people in a tiny little idea I know it already doing and Tanda because probably stealing still a lot of ideas kinda. What I think is only up sweet. Once sweeper will let's make sure we have a competition. To cottage because we don't normally play tipples doesn't mean we shouldn't. A an trying get off the guide to get get get them involved. Tied to talk you into sport is going to be really quite tough. I think because unfortunately a again, I don't fool if it's the same across the water but unfortunately, the can be the stigma hanging riding toward people think cuvette a can can contrive easy at Nicole. Vitamin, that doesn't inaudible. Vitamin. Today we haven't found any scientific proof towards that but but. It sounded the made that get through. And not something we're going to have to combat a cottage. So this coming season I. Think I don't think we can. Really. I don't think we can really make massive strides in trying to grow the sport. I think this coming season is let's Luke. Often what we've got make sure they are safe enjoying the game and time putting the fun back into it so that enjoying it and if we can do that too can then use those individuals, teams and everyone else to today build again once we what the new normal is going to be. That I I. Really. I am an idea steps in a really a As you do in business sometimes is digging deep protecting what you've got a and then look forward in future years to stop building again..

"A one bond of Cutler. We do want to be as inclusive us. We can all be it. But sadly, not promoting it towards a funded playoffs. So such like it will be competitive base, stay a club or we don't really help status but he had I'm not quite shoot if you do. But we don't are Competitive Competitive Style Cutler's phenomena style competition, but to be as inclusive. ECON. So it will include mails include female includes junior's include seniors and one of the key aspect. Is it's not all about competition is to bring the social site of covering back into the game with felt ten shoot as many other of the the social aspect of cuddling van evadne important the. Addition of the game and therefore we want to make sure that we're bringing back into the game and it's very competitive on the ice, but it's fun off it. So you say social aspects. So we have special events attached to it as well like a banquet or Dan. Kind of social activities ESPN withholding a cut limra a muddy field. Cutting. Birth. So But in the capital and we have a we help fade depending on couvert obviously we'll have vet tomatoes facilities died in. Top Top. Class, ice team died in cuddle Edinburgh. Yet will certainly be the attaching on a social events, a threat to competition on. A hopefully, attract quality players who want to come along and also enjoyed weekend. WILL IT BE SEGREGATED BY GENDER? So the immense event women's event or will it be kind of any combination of gender? At say. At the moment and we. Asked we do have the right to two. Main. Things us we the cry at this stage. The original planners will be the man women's teams will compete against each other as will juniors will senior. So everyone is just competing against each other in sections. One thing helping 'em. Expecting at the moment is mixed drinks were not looking to Mixing. Senate. So we will have but we will have ladies as a junior senior lady senior man's Am L. competing against each other. And the other thing I saw on the announcement was that it mentioned that the winners would advance to a European players curling championships so is that correct or? That disconnect two days for that. We've been in discussions with a few our European colleagues and a European Cutler's on. The broad boards of the ACC has been put together a cuddly. Negotiating with a number of countries and with a view to getting the BCC off the in a twenty one, twenty, two season. Civil of eight countries a coming forward over to Scotland initially. Day hopefully, we'll have eight main steams, eight women's teams representing the countries, and again it's not it's not for the elite, the funded players this is. US We keep seeing your good quality a. Dumont democrates the what club but good quality club amateur style players, and that is the train of thought on dates other countries that I'm Judith and I. Just night because we were still in discussions with them however. They had looking qualifying competitions the same as the be the British players coming championship will be and who knows it takes. Often the say podcasts work we we might get counted America joining we can. Playoffs, company jumping ship. Do you know this reminds me a lot. There is an event hosted at the Richmond. Curling. Club in Vancouver I'm not sure if you've heard of it called the Pacific international some similar sounds like a very similar kind of have you heard of that event? was that part of the idea behind this? I have had the event I wouldn't say so much of the ideas but trying to would not trying to reinvent the wheel is such. We'd like to be rather unique can find place however, semi had of the event and. A obviously, the playoffs title in NEOM A has has has has come from Canada more than anything else because you do have that title and a few of your competitions. A we didn't feel amateur really was the right. The right title for the competition to pigeonholing people so that for we felt players was a more appropriate want we can. We can build on that. Especially, in Britain a then around Europe and wherever else a would be delighted when other points should mention as also. But also looking to ensure that we engage a a with with playoffs and spectators advice think Saddam. So we don't just become yet another elitist competition. Therefore, the quarterfinalists eight day teams of each quarter finals will qualify for a British players cuddling tour a for for next season not to it will go around strengths in Scotland a playing a most likely albeit to discuss this with the teams that qualified. To make sure but taken off as much opinion as we possibly can. Likely on a Friday night. Where we can also involve local teams in local ice rinks to participate against these these these teams that have qualified and rob a social event data's wail to local ice rink. So we're bringing the player said, go good competition on the ice and. Hopefully a having fun at the same time and dice thinks that I'm Scotland. So I've got this I realize these questions can be a bit tricky at times. But one thing I know is that in international competition W cf Scotland England. Wales all play separately. The Scots are normally up in the April and Wales and England or in the pool, but they all play separately. But when it comes to the Olympics is normally it is under team GB although the teams are almost exclusively. Scottish so is this event? When it's called, the British players curling championship is it to English. Teams also participate in this or would there be separate English qualification event for the European championship that's still very much up in the air. No English teams teams, wells teams in northern, Ireland students are more than welcome to compete this. It is truly British ship Players Coming Championship had more than more than welcome and we have high dentist from a English teams a on another say already..

"The man bustling nice links name a good number of local authoritative on a sinks and probably local talk to John I should Facing many challenges whilst that might have Lord sources behind them, they to their their operating under very strict Cova drills for the employees are still on funnel. Dialed they'd a few problems to speak. So. The couple things you mentioned. In there that I want to go back to. So the airflow issue I hadn't really heard much about before. So what is it about curling or ice rinks in general and airflow? That's an issue when it comes to the cove safety. Okay I would say is probably the of enticing. Will we find in all watching groups etcetera as anything indoors becoming an issue with Cuvette, and they are thought further your office whether you're Bingo Hall who have for the Your leisure facilitate the flow of fluid ratio. Should I say as is a consideration? On many organizations, our governing bodies are coming I two specifics as one of the main measurements, his the liter, a the the Tosa she at flew the Jehovah of Satay groundwater such as coddling. They might be setting prompted of ten liters. but other halls might be twenty Lee toasted others might be a total of six. So they're setting different parameters thankfully, without discussions with Sports Scott than be gave been able to get a more realistic level. But as I say, have action actually knew what the flu as important for the pressure tasting arrives. Will few and far between suspect that I'm. Not, just stay up to Scotland. So therefore, it's a new challenge. If took my nights, think Saudi Al Juggle hats again will come back to an ice corner. We've installed you ducting to to bring That will create problems because you don't want air blowing over your ice because you're not trying to maintain very, very good quality championship standardise. Day Your humidifier US would be helping to run a constantly up. You're running costs dramatically easily by ten fifteen twenty. percent in season. So you've got to be careful but you take. Strong opinion and good opinion. And leave seventy. And then you health in your risk assessments should also looking other areas to assist with the flow from simple as opening doors in between. Sessions will be I think you call them draws but in between your draws, say Stephen opening the door for three five minutes to to give a flow of Aaron and then you have to start looking at the the flow of. Time will go until the detail on that. Will be all night. Yeah. So my other question then is just in terms of gameplay are they're special rules you're putting in place now in North America there's like three people not mastula similar rules going on in Scotland. Thought quite clear but thankfully, connected to all parties involved as Scotland's a scotch cuddling on association. We would discuss the Titan we arrived at a position as it stands sniping may change because our numbers unfortunately south rice in Scotland again. was stunned to see a few local law diagnosed for. which gives us all gate. Consen- I should say a at this point we're fortunate a an England. I six were given the go-ahead to recomend business. You stopped at setting down the rice I on on. There were supposed to open at twelve noon on the festival August Assad today, and on the fifty first to July bought Johnston the prime minister stood up and said I six for but not allied to open. So within license twenty foot I, wish they had all that is ready to go under told they couldn't open. So Masa Dilemma for showing saying, well, you know country build it. And they had to set open maintaining I just I. Just to about a fourth nine. Thank for the eventually. got to go ahead go ahead. So we will be. Detainment are determined to try and make should've Dustin Hoffman appear. But the downside question tonight clay, we democracy eight people at ranked. Mainly of the other Sports Square Square to. We debated to be didn't feel it was appropriate to come and given the size of holes. I'm displayed. A individuals that I'm the ranks but social distancing executor. So we kept Cleveland like that eight maximum Parang, which is just ideal meeting the Rican play ranks. A on on the defense side week, we only have a one passing sweeping. Is Fairly. Standard the world. Day. May One person sweeping so the Just stunned decide. But I'd mosques up not mandatory. Are the advisedly but as bad the guidelines. And if you're playing are competing in the sport did not mind today. So again, notes. and Go back to four four on to my eyesight K.. A. We will be a cutter Jen out Cutlass Tomasz that'd be certainly will not be making mind today it'll be don't teach individual, and if somebody's particularly uncomfortable come to play on people playing without Tomasz quayle unfortunately, they'll have decisions to make. So the main reason we wanted to to talk to you today was about a new event that's that I saw the promoted on facebook. So it's called the British players Curling Championship, and the the advertisements for I guess March Twenty Twenty one. So you're the chairman of this event as well. So can you tell us a little bit about this event? Yeah Surely Am I a few expedients Cutler's have come together I chaired. There's a good number of addicts cutlass come together with Scotch Champions, etc in involved in the ranks and we just felt that in recent times. There wasn't perhaps enough in college for a Competitive Developing Cutler to get involved in competition and I think since the imagine of funded players A. Vial status undoubtedly assisted the sports to tell secreted to problems at same time. Day would probably if I took a tax a good quality club Cutler's a or or or amateur covers around the ranks are finding it difficult to to find competitions to move on up to. A I'm sure. Make connections to discuss. In a few minutes. At this particular juncture out the need for competition like this. Day It appears to be the collect given the publicity received on the acknowledgments from from the teams that I'm Scotland. The VANYA likely to support the event. So. You're anticipated my next question. So this is kind of outside observer We talk a little bit on our show. Women have been back in May over the the decision to Scottish curling to move to a selection process for next year's world championships as opposed to. The kind of historical way of doing it of having the winners of the Scottish championship go to the world. So is this this new event at all related to that? It seemed like the announcement came. Out right away but a little while afterwards, the announcement of this new event came along that connection then. I wouldn't say it's connect to the such related to such a degree given the there's no hiding the fact that the the. Quite, a objection against the way things went. Got To the Scottish on the result. There is also a strong feeling among strengths in Scotland dictate a if you don't have the opportunity to move onto the discussed championship while they, what's the point to compete in so? That I will stay up late a capitalist, but it wasn't the fuel driver I think that perhaps the drive it was we've been talking for a number of years of of having plan b what applaud C. or whatever. I don't think anything told back the the ultimate movement towards the professional cuddling going towards the Olympic sector. Highway Info. The the resolve that no vs need for something to fill the void. wants decisions had been made in what's have been made. It was an appropriate to to bring this forward and just could I to the cutler to say, well, come on guys come on ladies you know is this something you've wanted to? So let's support day. Let's make it happen. Yes. So you said you kind of looking for a need in the market. I guess is one of the other things that intrigued me about the announcement 'cause because one of the things we've talked a lot of the past on our podcast about is the middle class of curling. If you will is squeezed like if you go back and Canada say generation. You'd have hundreds of teams enter the national play downs for the Brier and the Scotties and today at the provincial level. It's just down to a handful a my understanding similar thing going on in Scotland where. People who are very good at the club level perhaps they want a plane a bond spiel. But Day jobs, they can't commit to the train professionals do. are still looking for something. So is this the target market you're looking Foreign Scotland? Yes. It is very much. So I think the day we've used in a promotional say to clear prestigious event for competitive on developing Cutler's so so we're not particularly trying to target one one..

Save the playing for thirty years now, and the other thing that's quite interesting about you is an addition to being a curler. You also own an ice rink and I think for a lot of guests in North America. That might be a bit surprising but certainly in Scotland, my understanding, most of the rinks are either. Privately owned or owned by a council if you will. So how did you how long have you own you own the forfar ice rink and so how long have you owned that rank and can you tell us a little bit about the facility? Yes sure. I push stirring in two thousand nine from a local suspend a division to to take k four potato sheds and turn them into various sporting activities. I'm not hiding from the law I had to download an APP at the border called the arrive cap and every morning at paintings and I've gotta say. Do, you have covert symptoms I say no. I'm not sure I'm not sure what happens if I step outside the House with my phone like send a drone and shoot me but probably. Probably. So I stay here in terror. I haven't seen another one human being a family friend WHO's dropped off coffee that was very nice of her. And that's about it. In ten days. tweet sophie that you have what format days in quarantine. Format as a quarantine got I. I am nowhere near the woods. I am actually in Montreal. West which is the the neighborhood I grew up in. Except now, there's a giant grow up down legal grow up down the street. Yep. So you're in Canada for a family thing are you gonNa do when he curling while while you're in Canada? I pack my shoes and my curling trousers as we call them in. England. Because you called curling pants that means underwear. So you don't want to call them curling pants right? So I saw that Jerry from curling zone is trying to get people to sign up for the to do sales events, which are both going to be run in Kitchener Waterloo. Pretty close to each other here in October I assume you're going to participate. An why not? I don't have a team. I. Think You I. Think you. And Scott and Sean from game of stones need to find fourth in an inner this two events. will you pay entry fee? Will you sponsor us? How how much are we talking here? uh, probably five hundred bucks maybe a bit more I don't know is that is that Canadian? Canadian. So it's like twelve dollars us. Okay. Yeah. That's good. For Good All right. I don't know Scott Sean want to do it. But led bulbs a lot of logistics that I'm not interested in sorting out. Like I would need a broom that's the first problem. I'm sure share brooms anymore I would need I would eat a curling friendly mask because my masks I think they're fine for like shopping. I don't say the kind of pretty fabric they'd get pretty moist pretty fast. I even know if I brought my stop watch, you can't go curling in a spiel without your stop watch Ryan. You know Israel excuses. Probably. Probably beer because I'm like throwing a stone since March neither has anyone else. I think that I think my understanding, these spells it's like the good curlers are using them to need some competition and they've probably been thrown a Lotta stones and you're just donating money for like. Brought to destroy you like. Two. Aunts. You gotta points chase job because like at the end of it after England cancels all of their championships, they're gonNA go off of Order of Merit and if you've got northern gotta go off of they gotta go off Ken Palm Ratings because I do very well on those. That episode so I'm going to try to lobby the English Curling Association to only use Ken Tom. Rankings. So you gotta go points chase man you gotta play those two K. W. spills. All right. Well, forget some sponsor. They got a gofundme page. Can you get like a gofundme page but like for curling team? I'm sure that happened before like who will curl with me. Tinder for curling. Can. We, develop that APP. So you I was. Busy with life events as well. But you manage to do an interview for us, which we which we have here today So let me get this straight. We've got a pretty good Scottish guest, and then you had to interview them from Canada. But it worked. All right. That's good. So, who have we got Jonathan Tell people who this is so I. Saw on social media that there's a new competition called the British curling. Players. Championship. And it was pretty interesting We talked a little bit. I can't even remember when back in. May about the controversy in Scottish, curling that partly due to the lockout. Trump cards into lockdown and Co. VID. Partly due to other concerns that Scottish curling in British curling had decided for the next season to simply select. The national teams to play at the world championship rather than using the Scottish pearlridge. Ship as the means of choosing the teams. and. this event. I think. Was Not entirely response to this, but it was kind of I'd say perhaps prompted or accelerated by it, and so a new event that's clearly designed for. We talked about the interview I Guess Competitive Club curlers or. People who aren't being funded by British curling so I use the term amateur. I Mike Mike was a bit I think he didn't like that. Germany's talking more competitive club curler competitive Carlos who's not funded I use amateur simply because they're not being paid to curl. Right whereas the the kind of you know team gb the Scottish curlers, the team team Scotland, they're all kind of salary full time. So I think that actually is an important distinction and probably why there's a a widening chasm in the sport if you will. So this offense kind of a new event and I think it kind of touches on a lot of the things that we've been talking about a lot in this podcast about. How to kind of grow that middle class? What's happening to kind of competitive club whatever you WanNa Call Club plus between irs whatever you WanNa call that cheer and so this is an event they're going to try and Scottish curling to. To try to address that gap. So I guess it's GonNa, listen to them can talk after the interview. Joined by Mike Ferguson today from. He's the owner of the four for ice rank and he's also the chairman of the Scottish Ice Rinks Association. We wanted to talk about a couple of things today first of all, how rinks in Scotland or cut of responding to reopening light of the Cova pandemic, and secondly he's organizing a new competition in Scotland called the British players Curling Championship. We wanted to talk to him about that. So welcome to the show. Mike. Okay thanks very much. Yes. Glad to be here. Thank you thank you for joining us. So first of all, we to start off by asking our guests how they got into curling. So so how did you get into curling and how long have you been playing the sport? Getting into covering the family moved by oxygen than anything else I played. Sports before getting into coddling including football or soccer in your language and other sports, and then a married to my wife. Sandra on Titan her father Hopkins in Scotland TV shots of the player on evening to keep fathom ball hoppy I was pushed into the car and taking today think started throwing stones and within a within within minutes. So I was totally totally who to love the game. Just Metropoli, looking back at nineteen, thousand, eight, hundred, eighty, nine, hundred, ninety, that started I, think..

"Personal. rose. on the planet by women by the way forgot again women don't want to go to a wedding showers either Steve. five I'm a woman I hate bridal showers are never would have dreamed of torturing my husband making the ten dollars yeah I don't think I would have won either a small sample why not give the gift. at this point do a market I can get a couple guess he could not say thank you entirely thanks Dave. I like I love golf I've made no secret of that and I go on and on about it to the point of people going to stop talking. but that's not important right now what's important is that you know the MVP P. revolves around the great game of golf this morning starting with Jonathan Snyder director of the freedom of golf I'm gonna get this right to freedom golf association let me go to Jonathan to make sure I got the right Jonathan is that right. yes you will say he isn't and the freedom golf association does what. we were enjoying a sense of freedom this special needs and when veteran community through their inclusion in the game of golf you know basically just have a lot of fun with the game of golf and trying to teach the fundamentals to get more individuals on the course and these are the people that wouldn't otherwise not have access to the game because the bridge is the recent FedExCup you were able to put together several of with Dustin Johnson an opportunity to be around one of the best in again. yeah definitely we we just sat at a very very wonderful clinic at the BMW championship we can't think the western Gulf association to be in that we can share Payne's fronteras and now for for helping provide that opportunity for us also joining us on the phone is Mike Ferguson we have Mike in here as well good morning Mike are you. good thanks for having us this is awesome or after the year and Mike is well he's worked as a visor guiding first time entrepreneurs how to get from concept to launch but you're the first part of the freedom golf association as well what do you want to add. well it you know I join this organization the beginning of the year and I've heard about it before I played in the golf outing a few times and it's a wonderful organization we were founded back in twenty twelve by Edmund sold actually does play EQ Sylvester who had a very successful business career and then sold his company retired in within months had contracted sepsis now he had planned on spending the rest of his life traveling and playing golf. and once we got sensors he woke up you know three weeks later from a coma and was a triple amputee so you lost both legs in it and one of his hands and anyway he he tried to go out and play golf is having a tough time and couldn't find anybody to teach you how to play golf and N. any realize you know there's a need out here for people that have had either physical or developmental problems that would like to play golf and they just don't find the they they couldn't find anybody to do now so he's like well now I'm eighty years old and I got a new mission in life son of found an organization in order to train coaches and we're gonna get people out to yeah to learn how to play golf I love the term adaptive golfers that you're using can you describe some of the challenges that the golfers face like I mean you and you're helping children all the way to adults. yeah you know Johnson runs our clinic so Jonathan might want to address that because he knows all the spelling worries noting this is what he does on a daily basis. we come across everyone with that that from possibly lose in the use of of some of their lands to individuals with developmental challenges as well as for survivors and burn survivors that our country I just there nobody saw that a lot of the time that that is really what it comes down to is just adjusting to their new bodies and that's why we really love the term adaptive golf because anytime you play off you have to adapt to the situation whether it's the winter like climbing Zachary the weather so we the how long we knew we were. last week we try to keep that to a minimum sorry. not a hard hard as game there is to play well and yeah eight did to really enjoy it and to be able to get out and fresh air and to do it especially when you have that capability at one point to be able to accept you know that you got an extra hurtled a speed bump to get over in life and have somebody working with you so you can enjoy the game again I really salute which again you. a recent rise how how how much therapeutic rehabilitation and actually provide. one of our favorite stories are one of my favorite stories is from the BMW we we were invited out there to do the strive to do hold a driving range clinic. in we invite a bunch of kids from front responsible including ours use ambassador and Shriners hospitals previous ambassador Connor. and Connor and I kind of thirteen Jonathan and in another socialize Tracy Raymond. well brought up on the driving range mark Wilson was in charge of everything you used to be on tour for seventeen years and there's a crowd of about two hundred people there and Connor has been to one of our clinics what for a year so now Jonathan and in these days and you know getting better and better and I was thirteen years to compete in in only junior golf association tournament. and you know kind of get this beautiful slang and marks inter mark Wilson interviewing him. and answer some questions kind of just takes the microphone turned around in addresses these kids and talks about how he was you know when he was younger he might have had some hardships in his life he's thirteen I think it's. he was younger and he gives a little motivational speech to these guys about. you know how golf is changed his life and how you so Christopher pretty involved situation and and and now the focus is the setting goals and he he really goes out attacks not just golf but life he's such a positive kid in and doing then tastic so and then there was another kid there who. Tim do he was born with alarms and now we we use that range for him to have some special clubs I can't really tell yet too much about it but you know now he's gonna go play golf as well well we are we helping everybody can play golf Sir absolutely and it's important how do we help you guys. well we've got a a casino night coming up but we'd like to you know mentioned that it's Friday November fifteenth at ruffle feathers so there's some sponsorship packages available in depending on who's listening will we really look like is some people to step up and say you know what Mister fantastic organization and would like to make a donation or you know even a corporation I want to say listen I wanna get behind this as well and in our sponsor you guys for like your program for next year that would be that would be the best outcome that we could cover help ever hope for the best way to get that information and to get a hold of you guys to do it.

Why Do Coffee Drinks Often Have Italian Names?

"Hey, brain stuff listeners instead of an ad today. I wanted to tell you about new podcast. I think you might dig for my friends, Robert lamb, and Joe McCormack, you might already know them from the weird science podcast stuff to blow your mind. Their new show is called invention each episode of invention examines different technological turning point and the people and cultures the provoked the change they consider the origins and impact of everything from the guillotine to the vending machine. Chopsticks to sunglasses. Braille to x-rays and lots more new episodes of invention come out every Monday, listen and subscribe to invention on apple podcasts the iheartradio app or wherever you happen to find your podcasts. Welcome to brain stuff from how stuff works. Hey, bring stuff on Lauren Vogel bomb. And if you can't start your morning without a Cup of Joe, you're certainly not alone. I'm right there with you. But Americans consumption of coffee is up. It's the highest. It's been since two thousand twelve and global exports are up to according to the International Coffee Organisation world coffee exports increased by seventeen percent from October two thousand seventeen to October of two thousand eighteen and overall global shipments were four point two percent higher year over year, clearly coffee has become an important daily ritual for many Americans which begs the question, why are so many coffee lovers? Ordering those drinks using Italian words from lattice Tamaki autos. How did this happen after all coffee doesn't have its roots in Italy legend has it that the great being originated in the Ethiopian plateau and was discovered by goat herder who noticed his goats veritably danced after eating a certain plant. It's spread throughout the Arabian peninsula and adjacent areas before Europeans encountered coffee in the. Seventeenth century, nevertheless, many of the coffee drinks, we know today and popularized by Starbucks more on that in a minute do originate in Italy, and it has everything to do with the invention of the Espresso machine. Espresso doesn't refer to a particular type of coffee bean. It's actually a coffee preparation method, and it was first developed in Italy in the nineteenth century because brewed coffee could take up to five minutes to make coffee lovers. Sada way to shorten the time between ordering and drinking the first Espresso machines were bulky and difficult, but by the early twentieth century Milanese manufacturer Luigi bizarre had developed a single shot Espresso the produced one Cup of coffee in seconds, though. It did take a while for the machines to improve in terms of ease of use and flavor of the coffee produced we spoke with Paul Bassett former world barista champion, he said, the Espresso machine kind of revolutionized coffee to some extent. Everything was centered around the way Espresso was made the way it was consumed as well, he explained that with the Espresso machine. Coffee could be made on. The spur of the moment and was intended to be drunk immediately after being served typically standing at a bar Italian coffee culture grew and Espresso as we know it today became popular in Italy and France in the nineteen thirties, the nineteen fifties beatnik movement and its coffeehouse culture launched Espresso craze in the United States. We also spoke with Mike Ferguson with OEM specialty coffee, he explained early in the specialty coffee movement authenticity meant Italian in the nineteen eighties. Many if not most coffee houses had Italian names and adopted as much Italian as possible into their cafe menu. So the trend continued the coffee drinks, they served also retained their -talian nomenclature because they were specifically made with Espresso the names referred to what is added to the Espresso, for example. But the word Mark Jato into Google translate and you'll get stained or spotted so the drink name refers to the spot of milk that stains the Espresso Bassett said, I think fundamentally Espresso is directly linked to Italy as beverage and the way it's part of their culture. It's been transported all around the world and reinterpreted despite reinterpretation, the drinks with talion names have an Espresso base. And typically, some kind of milk added. For example, a cafe latte usually just called a lot in the United States consists of Espresso milk and milk foam. It's not brewed coffee with milk. Although that's the literal translation to be fair ordering an Espresso with milk and milk foam doesn't sound as catchy the distinction between Espresso and brewed coffee is important consider the Americano which was named for Americans in Italy who sought a drink. Similar to the brood or filtered coffee. They drink at home because it emerged in Italy and is made by adding water to Espresso, it retains its talion title. So this answers the question about coffee drink names. But what about Starbucks use of sizes like 'Grande inventing, which are also talion words, this sizing nomenclature short tall and 'Grande was introduced when ill Nali opened its doors in one thousand nine hundred six and the venue size came in the early nineties ill. Denali was the name of the coffee houses launched by Starbucks chairman emeritus Howard Schultz during his mid eighties hiatus from the company the company's website states. That sheltered been quote captivated with talion coffee bars and the romance of the coffee experience a tradition. He wanted to bring to the United States he returned to Starbucks and purchase the company in one thousand nine hundred seven and that branding now extends to fo- Italian product names, like the Frappuccino, which is a trademarked name and not actually Italian word by the way bonus back to the episode the caffeine in coffee that perks. You up is considered the most commonly used drug in the world. Today's episode was written Vicary, Whitney and produced by Tyler claiming for I heart media, and how stuff works or more on this and lots of other peppy, topics. Visit our home planet has to work dot com. You know, people say necessity is the mother of invention. But that's not always true. Sometimes the mother of invention is advertising. Yeah. Or pure accident. How about ego maniacal delusion? Absolutely. Or just a desperate longing. To be cool. I'm Robert lamb, and I'm Joe McCormick. We're the host of the science podcasts stuff to blow your mind. And now we're branching off into the exploration of invention. Invention is the story of human history told one piece of technology at a time the things we made and how they made us invention publishes every Monday, listen and subscribe to invention on apple podcasts the iheartradio app or wherever you find your podcasts.
