"Floor is yours Mike Conklin well we'll try to get to Mike in a couple of minutes partly cloudy overnight lows in the mid fifties are como eco roof forecast in Rome right now is Seattle seventy two degrees the following program was pre recorded this is an ABC news special bringing America back what you need to know here is ABC news correspondent Aaron Katersky after consistent drops in infections hospitalizations and intensive care admissions mayor bill de Blasio said today New York City once the center of the nation's coronavirus crisis would move to phase two of its re opening starting Monday we've seen consistent progress and it's time to say to everyone getting ready for phase two get on your mark get set because here we go on Monday these two means playgrounds hair salons indoor retail and outdoor dining the city will allow restaurants to expand seating on sidewalks curb lanes and some streets that are going to temporarily close next month to make room New York has seemingly come out of its crisis point as other states appear to be moving into it and for the first time today governor Andrew Cuomo said New York is considering instituting a quarantine period on anyone from Florida though previously dismissive of the idea Cuomo said he has experts who have advised him to impose such a restriction I've made a decision yet but I have had experts advise me of that it is a real concern you're right it could happen gonna mention how Florida imposed a two week quarantine on new Yorkers at the onset of the pandemic Florida and other states imposed a quarantine on new Yorkers if you went to Florida you have to quarantine for two weeks because they were afraid that new Yorkers were bringing the virus to their state chest forward Hundred Days now we're afraid they bring the virus to our state Florida reported a new single day increase in infections today three thousand two hundred seven this is the first time the status posted more than three thousand cases in a single day doctor Reilly Marty joins us now from Florida International University and infectious disease specialist what's going on in your state what's going on is we are now observing the results of the last couple of weeks of people getting together too closely and without taking precautions so that our numbers are rising and they're rising for real it's not just testing it's it's a huge percent increase per you know per testing area well very significant increase for protesting area so over twelve percent positive rate and in addition to that we're seeing more cases coming to the hospital if the CDC says you should be at about five percent I think before you reopen things twelve percent positivity on the testing is a significant increase dissidents and it's worrisome to everyone in the health care community right now the governor had talked about testing and that's the reason but clearly there's more to it than that there is more to it than that I mean because one thing is to look at the absolute number of cases and that in theory absolutely could go up simply by conducting more tests but the percent positive has also gone up and and we're seeing that percent positive going up sheer in Miami Dade which is not a new community of of being tested so it's a community that we've we've been having ongoing tests and now our percent positive is higher and our house our admissions to hospitals are going up again what's the answer what should the response be well I think that leadership needs to be very clear on reminding the population of what we need to do to bring the numbers down with out if we can avoid it going into a lockdown which means everyone has to recognize that we have a serious fires the deadly virus for certain members of our community that can cause long term complications in survivors and that this is something that is preventable by our actions is that a message that just didn't get across at the outset of the pandemic because the virus seem to be hitting the northeast or western states much harder than it did Florida at least initially I think that people were paying attention to the wrong numbers and not understanding the science not understanding that this is simply a sub microscopic of piece of genetic information covered in protein that wants to get from one host to the next and there are basic things that we can do to prevent that from happening and among those things are hygiene our use of facial coverings and our social distancing and if we do that and couple it with identifying where the virus is doing testing of every level of symptomatic patient isolating those individuals testing their closest contacts with their symptomatic will not and then quarantining individuals who are still close contacts that have tested negative we do that we can accomplish having a functional economy and getting rid of the virus but if we don't do those things and we give the opportunity for this virus to have free range then we wind up with wild community spread like we had the virus doesn't care what we believe doesn't care about our politics it only cares about getting from one house to the next and when we ignore that anyone who does more that reality basic science is missing the point and actually can do themselves more harm than good Dr Eileen Marty at Florida International University in Tennessee the increasing cases is likely driven by tourism during Memorial Day weekend when a FEMA document obtained by ABC news said large crowds did not practice social distancing or use masks in New Hampshire there is been a sixty percent decrease in availability of ICU beds in just the last three days another one point five million Americans filed new claims for unemployment insurance not all may have been laid off last week there's still some backlog in the system but layoffs are still coming as the pandemic reaches deeper into the economy and employers appear reluctant to bring back all their workers ABC's Alex stone joins us now with a sign though of economic recovery Alex indications are air travels on the rebound demand is definitely going up I can tell you I flew this week every one of my flights except for middle seats which some airlines are still doing they were completely full I went through the Vegas airport it look like a normal pre cove in nineteen day in Vegas Seattle's airport was pretty busy Burbank that I was in it was busy as well that's backed up by the numbers delta airlines today saying they're looking at August capacity going up still down about fifty five percent compared to this time last year but it's a lot better than the ninety percent decline that that we were talking about a couple of months ago so things are rebounding still gonna be slow delta is adding about a thousand flights in July and August JetBlue is adding flights United had already announced it was bringing back flights American as well sure they back to normal no is it getting better yeah you mentioned middle seats being empty that's by design right yeah that said the planned delta saying that they're going to do it through the end of September at least going into October I some of the other airlines are doing it anymore United's not really doing it Americans not doing it southwest is it's not assigned seats on southwest so they just leave another open so that depending on where people want to see it that they could leave a middle seat open Alaska Airlines still doing it but it's not guaranteed on on many carriers delta still guaranteeing it they say they feel like they need to do it more than anything it's peace of mind you're not even when you have an open middle seat you're not six feet away from the other person and you're definitely not six feet away from the person in front of you and behind you but it does give you a little bit of peace of mind if you're not shoulder to shoulder with that person right next year no matter where you sit on the plane many airlines are requiring masks yeah pretty much every major airline is now requiring masks and they're getting tougher on the masks their people over if used to wear them you know airlines who kind of said well we want you to wear them please wear them now the big airlines United American some of the others are saying if you don't wear a mask if you refuse after you're told you've got to wear it that they will potentially put you on their own internal blacklist and you won't be able to fly on that airline for a certain amount of time and United is the one kind of leading this effort saying if we tell you you must wear a mask and you absolutely refuse well then you're not going to be flying United they won't say for how much time would for a certain amount of time and this is all an effort to try to get people to to wear masks something to the airlines say science and evidence show do actually work in preventing the spread of droplets on board the airline say it's got to be done ABC's Alex stone.

"Do you ever since there's maybe something in the in the archives the conklin household archives that <hes> <hes> you know might make some good storytelling. We'll what i would what would interest me would be to go back and revisit some of these guys and find out what they're doing today and a bunch bunch of the sting players the joe guys from germany over here like in the summer sometimes and spend a week we reunite and getting out of the house where week that kind of stuff and that would be one. I ran in nepal nepal lunch of all places in the casino in las vegas once and and he was standing in the background with me while they were filming that movie <hes> with dustin hoffman off mun where he plays an autistic. He's autistic and his bigger brother rainman yeah rain. They were filming a scene there. There's a scene where he's in a casino or something and there was pot you you know and he's always seem but we're both sitting there watching. I like pot. Oh my heart. I can't believe this. You know he's up in michigan. Now i think but i'd like to go back and revisit some of those guys and i'm i'm sure there's some just as the word then and sometimes he stories didn't get told now they can get told and i've i've. I've often thought about visiting and going back. I love those kind of where are they. Now kinds kinds of stories. Ill pieces of history fifty years ago. This happened back. That's the premise for this book that i'm doing now. <hes> something that happened fifty years ago and i'd like to go back and and right about that you know i see a lot of soccer books on amazon but they're all tend to be very nici. Sort of things and these guys were so cosmopolitan and so international national that i i got. I think there's some good stories in there and we'll dick advocaat would be the perfect example. Dick advocaat coached the dutch in the world cup. He was the hibernia whoa glasgow or one of the rangers are one of those teams in scotland. He went on to <hes> to <hes> you know really become the muni elite coaches in the world. You know i mean gordon hill would be a good when he became a big star at manchester united any burned out. I don't know what happened and it would be fun to mind all right. I suspect that that will not be the last episode we do on the chicago. Sting indeed we are <hes> efforting hopefully soon rather than later a conversation with the great owner of the chicago sting lee stern and that's that's hopefully within <hes> within weeks we look forward to bring that to you at some point in the reasonably near future but mike conklin has been just stupendous appendice in setting the table for this very rich tableau of the chicago sting story and if you live in or have grown up or or used to live in chicago air you're the sting is a very interesting team that continues to resonate mostly with warm fuzzies depending on who you ask and championships in chips plural that it brought to at the time a very <hes> championship starved metropolitan area in beautiful chicago illinois oy. Let's see mikes. <hes> books that we mentioned are available for sale of course wherever you find good books but if you wanna give us a few shackles of love why don't you screwed.

"There i i y i covered this thing eighty two the year after they want at the end of this towards the end of the season in august or whatever it looked like they weren't going anywhere <hes> the the they made me me. The college beat guy in time for the start of the college football season so i did college football for about three or four years i <hes> i caught the illinois. In the rose bowl period. <hes> the early mike wait wait <hes> rule <hes> your era and i did that and then i covered the blackhawks for a couple of seasons and they went nowhere. I mean this was really the dog days and then i started writing a daily column <hes> and i wrote it <hes>. I co authored it with linda kaye late. Linda kate kills me to say that but <hes> <hes> <hes> and i did it with her for two years and then i took it over by myself 'cause she left the paper and i wrote a daily sports column called <hes> odds and ends and i did that for about five years or so five more years and then i went to the ink column kathy o'malley i replaced cathy kathy o'malley on the ink column for five years and then i did feature writing and i did feature writing for about five years and basically it was magazine style writing long features and so i had this rolodex of course that's a term. When i teach i went on to teach at depauw i have to explain to the kids wanna rolodexes young whippersnappers out there. That's what we had before the internet yeah yeah yeah i used to show them all the president's men and a always tell them ahead of time. I gotta warn you. You're gonna see something. That's gonna scare you. They're called typewriters so but anyway <hes> so. I i <hes> in the in the five or six years that i wrote for the tempo section. I was able to pull some of these things back into play because i always liked to feel like i was a translator translator. I was translating soccer and some of these sports for an audience might not know that much about it well. If you take that you know if you take that attitude towards other things the the world is your choice to you know and i love to tell stories at no one else was telling and so in the years that i was in the tempo section like they gave me one of the things i used to write a lot about our the museums cams in chicago the art galleries and stuff and i used to write stories and this is when they were spending money the tribune i go on weeks jaunt in fact <hes> <hes> the pele game in portland. I had a <hes> no for another story. I was at in portland. I had traveled or call me and she said i hear you're out in portland glenn. This was in the eighties nine those in the nineties and she said i am. She's wants to take an extra week. I'll pay for it and just find a couple of stories for me and i actually found that the birthplace of phil knight in the nike hanky stuff gasoline so i just floated around and doing features but it worked out because i had all these things i mean the city you know the the softball and the soccer and the ethnic groups and you know..

"So. I didn't get a chance to kind of soak up a lot but the one thing that i will never forget is getting off the airplane and and i remember i'm because i flew back with the team. I think the back the next day and i flew back with the team because they wanted me to cover kind of what's going on on on a plane and all that kind of stuff and show and i remember and we're all kind of one big block and <hes> and they didn't have their own plane flew. Oh i can't remember the airline that wasn't a charter of any kind. I don't think that as i recall and somebody stood up one of the stewardesses and says we want to warn everybody. Apparently there's a big reception option at the at the gate waiting for those days you could walk right up to the gate and and so you know be prepared and we got off and it was like you had to fight your way to the baggage thing. I mean you know not fight but you had to really get through this thing and people were just going nuts. You know and i mean it was it was fabulous. Though really i mean it was really i mean i'm not a part the team but just as an observer i mean you know i'm writing around talking to people getting all kinds of quotes and everything but i mean i'd never witnessed something quite like that and and and i'm sure it it happens a lot. You know i guess the teams fly on their charter so people can't get access to them like they could hear and i mean even the players were just overwhelmed by this you no and i saw a lot of young people which really was kind of a cool thing to see you know and a lot of ethics i mean you could tell by their language and stuff like that you know and it was it was really something it was really something to see that you know to to to to walk through that maze of people that were out there and everyone was just like you know the people people who were they weren't a part of it. Just you know i mean like stunned. We surprised by all of it. I mean i was. I didn't think it would be quite like that. You know because i had never really been a part of something like that or never <music> been that close to it but <hes> yeah i was i mean they had a really strong following of a core people and i mean i mean it's legendary some of the bars. After the games north north lincoln avenue was and wilson in fact arnold ended up opening a bar there and <hes> i mean there was a couple of zoomed uige neck and all these places they would all go to after the games and and i mean it was it they had i mean they had a really strong following in the like the northern european n._f._l. Teams national soccer league teams in chicago.

"By the time that they came to go to the soccer bowl <hes> there was no doubt but what you know we were going to give him full coverage. We sent a columnist who as i recall and and the columnists start showing up <hes> which is a retali- who a lot of people don't know about it used to be really a prominent sports commerce for the used to love to come out and write about them. They've kind and with throw some stuff in the column once in a while about him a lot of it's centered around. Lee's stern because he was kind of still kind of the face of the team <unk> at the same time and <hes> i think even bill gleason from some time start coming out to me that was the real barometer and you never saw that you never saw that until basically until tola seventy nine seventy eight seventy nine into it then it was also the first year of the indoor game eighty eighty one which was the first sort of real. I guess response to the a._m. A._s._l. Which had sort of grown out of nowhere three years prior so in some respects i guess you also had now more of a year round reason to cover and war if you're lee turn on the front office promote the team and obviously the indoor thing itself caught on even independent of the outdoor but i got to think that that seventy nine and into eighty season with that indoor loop it didn't hurt things in terms of keeping the interest level you know used to do you still gotta right. You're still going to be in the paper and they would never have been in the paper otherwise to and in the off season that that <hes> you know interesting m._s._l. Pretty sure jim walker was the first general manager who used to be the general manager who i think we place clive toy. Maybe yeah or charlie of rain one of the two and the m._s._l. Knew what they were doing with the game that they knew how to play the game indoor shocker and and it was just hilarious the first year or two of the n._f._l. Tried to play indoor and they're getting good crowds and everything but willie never seen a coach so so exasperated after lying changes. I mean you know i mean he'd never i mean soccer's veria sort of cerebral sport where you throw your guys out there and you really don't have a whole lot of control all over what goes on you yellow few instructions or something but this stuff was constant motion. Some of the players really had trouble adjusting to it but but but but the fans that were going were sting outdoor where people so they were adjusting to it too at the same time and it and it really worked and i mean they had some full houses of the chicago stadium. It was fun to watch how how was it to cover indoor versus outdoor right outdoors a little bit more languid and you chance to breathe you can kind of see strategy developed whereas this indoor thing much more gogo hockey type higher scoring i mean how did you and your editors look at this indoor..

"With the sting but that was that was a concoction of of toys right being almost sort of the quintessential to <hes> promoter. Shall we say of the game name <hes> maybe that's a good segue because it seems like that's when some real attempts to kind of shake things up a little bit both on the field as well as perhaps off the field and and it didn't go very well. It seems like those seventy seven seventy eight seasons yeah i. I you know for what reasons. I can't tell you but i mean i. I know that the newspapers tended do not do anything at all very exciting about him at the time when they made some of the played some of those exhibitions and as you alluded to do they weren't all that successful soccer's a different sport to because exhibition games some of those exciting exhibition games. They're not always what they're cracked up to be either because sometimes the star players stay back. They don't wanna get hurt that kind of stuff you you know and they call them friendlies for the most part so that right off the bat that sort of put you in a whole you're silt gets they're playing a friendly with somebody and but toi toi it was a was a really like clive and he was he was a good guy and he was exciting but i sometimes think that he needed a little bigger budget to do the sort of stuff that he really wanted to do and <hes> and i think i think that kinda he was a little hamstrung when he was here <hes> and and he's just totally the opposite of what lee was lee was excitable excitable and clive you know you could set off a bomb on the next block and and you know and he would he would take it in stride and and move right on along and everything but he was a delight to cover too because he loved being around the media and and of course coming from new york you know he was he was really into. He knew he knew what would play in what wouldn't play with the media and he played you know he was. He was great to cover well. He also brought in a new coach. Malcolm muss grove which also didn't go all that well right because i think in nineteen seventy eight right the team. If i have this correct i think they kind of uh-huh in ten yeah. It was a disastrous start in seventy eight and if i have mike my data correct. I don't know it was seventy. Seven or seventy eight the i think the sting had had the lowest attendants of any team in the league so yeah i do you remember of that of that kind of time because i gotta think that it's at around this time and i think i've seen a little bit of bits and pieces that lee stearns probably thinking i what do i have to do and why am i doing this to myself. First of all just to tobacco. Don't put too much stock in attendance figures. The almost all were lower than what they were saying to. It makes it makes the situation even worse. I think <hes> <hes> i don't. I don't think i don't know i can't recall there was thoughts along the line of well lis going to bag it and just fold up the team and all that kind of stuff that never seemed to be factor because one of the things that that kind of went into the strength of the franchise was the strength of the league and and they still were expanding in some cases and <hes> so that helped and i don't know what kind of pooling they would do a resources among owners and teams but so that never really was was quite a factor. You know that oh my guys and frankly. I'm a newspaper guy. If they fold the phone that's the story but <hes> but lee was just kind of dug in his feet you know and just became even more determined you know to to make it go but but malcolm and i don't know that i think sometimes that clive toy came here kind of because i don't know how much lee had to do with that to get his son. Kenny had a lot to have a lot of influence and <hes>. I think everybody thought you know well. If he's these diverse successful the cosmos you'll come here and do the same thing. Lee was thinking thinking more..

"Soccer. We used to play by play but i mean the point being there was very little television and it was almost all print but print carried a little more weight in those days and when they started you know <hes> drawing some crowds because that's that's the first barometer look at <hes> and so when i went i mean i one of the things i always did. Was i always put the crowd count in there and <hes> because i thought that was an important important thing that people people were watching. I got close to the coach and then you had a language problem with many of the players which so i immediately gravitated more towards the guys that could were fluent in english and thank goodness disdain tended to be a lot of brits although two people separated by a common language of course that's the the old the whole saw about that and <hes> but i found the players to be really accessible and <hes> love to talk and you know tell about themselves and all that sort of stuff so it was it was is really not hard to find stories if you're at all a newsman and i approached it that way and like a lot of things i mean sometimes you have to search to find stories. My problem was i had so many good stories that you know i had to sell them to my editor still the same time because they just sometimes weren't willing to allot all that much base to it. So how about this owner the sky namely stirring <hes> i gotta think he was probably one of the first people that you met and all this center and probably unbridled enthusiasm area beginning for sure yeah no li lee was great from a standpoint of a beat guy because <hes> he was <hes> outspoken and it really wasn't between me and him but me has as the representative of the media. I had a different set of priorities and he did his was to always present. Soccer is a positive positive thing well. That's that's kind of hard to do sometimes because there's some backstories stories here that that make that difficult for instance one of the soccer players they had on the team. Maybe i'll keep them nameless. I don't know he was a big star. In germany but i found there was a period in his career where he was playing in south africa for a couple of years and i never could quite figure that out and it turned out that he had been on a team and germany that through a game name so it was part of the relegation process they were trying to help out a team that was below them that if they won that game they would move up to the premiere of the top league the next year and they were discovered gordon so he got banned from the bundesliga for like a couple of years and he went to south africa which didn't belong to fiba at the time they weren't part of the international organization because is all south america of south african athletics were outcasts and you could play there. He go down and play on a pro team and get paid you know so there are a lot of guys at brought a lot of you know supposedly baggage to to to this thing and there was no shortage of stories like then it's also interesting to having looked at some of your earliest columns in the seventy five season right where you can sort of see the beginnings of it. You are the crowd count right. I think one of your first articles you talked about <hes>..

"Fifty four. I'm Mike conklin, KOMO news. How Louis it's going to be a gorgeous June weekend around here. We're going to start with loads of cloud cover but lots of afternoon, sunshine. And because is this time of year in June, the son's pretty high in the sky, it's strong and Brighton. We'll be able to burn through that cloud deck before, you know, it, it will clear out, more quickly than it did on Friday, such that it will be warmer. Saturday's highs low to mid seventies mid to upper seventies for a perfect father, stay in the KOMO weather center, I'm meteorologist you. Donald. In fifty feet. Driving so slowly after a few drinks, I'm taking it slow. You're not fooling the cop behind you. What? Get ready to pay in point one miles. Getting pulled over for buzzed driving could cost you around ten thousand dollars in fines, legal fees, and increased insurance rates.
