"At some point when life gets back to normal and we all start moving around again you may find yourself staying at a hotel and there is a scam going around at hotels that you really need to be aware of. Here's how it works. You check into a hotel you give the front desk your credit card. They do what they do with it. They give it back. You go to your room and then at some point during your stay you get a phone call and it someone who says this is the front desk when you were checking in. There was a problem with your charge card information. Could you please reread me your credit card number and verify the three digit security code on the back? And you know you. Don't think anything's wrong. Sounds legit so you happily oblige and you read your credit card number and your three digit security code. But what's really going on is. It's a scam it. Someone calling from outside the hotel. They've asked for a random room number and the call gets put through and then they claim to be calling from the front desk. Saying is this room. Eleven seventy and you say yes. And and now they've got your credit card your three digit security code and they start charging stuff on your credit card. So if that happens to you you can just tell the call there. You'll go down to the front desk later and clear up any problems and avoid getting taken by some credit card scam and that is something you should know man. That's the podcast today. "Advice. You can use your life today something he should now with mike carruthers welcome to something. You should know die bright in because this this subject interest me a lot. Have you ever been reluctant. I didn't ask for help. I know i have and i'm not sure why i for fear of looking weak or stupid or incompetent. People are often afraid to ask for help or advice for fear of appearing that way but it turns out. This is so interesting. It turns out that it's it's just the opposite. A study in the journal management science found that participants rated others as more competent when they ask for help nope this was especially true when the task was difficult in general people who seek advice from others are perceived to be more or competent than those who don't and interestingly admitting that something was your fault is an effective way to build trust. Even i know people think it does just the opposite people are more attracted to people who appear human and less than perfect and that is something you you should know so much of our lives are governed by probability. Will the weather be goodwill. The traffic traffic be bad. Will you win or lose it a game. Will you get the job you applied for probability and to some degree chance play a role role in so many aspects of our lives..

"What makes a man attractive to a woman? Well, probably lots of things. But one thing you probably haven't heard much about is altruism. Women seem to find altruism in men to be very appealing in short men who display helping behaviors are generally perceived as more attractive than men who do not. But new research dug a little deeper and found a few interesting nuggets men who displayed altruism were found to be more attractive by women looking for long term relationships when it came to short term relationships. Non altruistic men were in fact, more desirable than altruistic men altruism appeared to be even more appealing than physical attractiveness when it came to long term relationships unattractive men who were high in altruism were actually rated more attractive for long term relationships. Than attractive men who rated low in altruism. Of course, this was the result of an experiment research, which doesn't necessarily prove it's always true in real life. But but for some men, it could be an easy way to gain an edge over the more self oriented guys out there, and that is something you should know. Remember if you hear an advertisement for one of our sponsors. That sounds interesting to you all of the links and promo codes for discounts and special offers are in the show notes for this episode. "But you ended tone to it, which is a nonverbal. Hi, I'm Mike Carruthers, and that's the difference. So it it's tricky. But what we're talking about is. You're verbal and nonverbal communication and the words may be fine. But you're nonverbal communication can be sending a very different message is kissing ever appropriate anymore. Well, who you talking about at work colleagues if you're interacting with people, and you have relationships with them, and you know, them you may want to hug and kiss them. But the difficulty with that is that you have to use commonsense. And unfortunately, common sense, isn't that common? Because Mike, I may know you, and I've known you for a long time. I see you. I'm going to hug and kiss you. Now, people are going to watch me huggy, kiss you. And now they're going to come over and think that they can hug and kiss me. Now, maybe all right for you. But it's not going to be all right for them. And you've already established a standard that you're hugging and kissing people. So you have to be very careful. There was a young woman who would hug and kiss her customers. And she was an exceptionally attractive young woman, and when she would go to their offices. She would hug and kiss him. And it was fine. But one night she was at a dinner meeting. And she went up to one of her customers and gave him a big hug and kiss in front of his wife was not. Okay. So you have to use some commonsense. Handshaking? What what's the what are the rules for who sets puts their hand out first, and who doesn't and what if they don't and just run through that. I get more questions on the handshake than any topic. I teach there is a new guideline in the workplace today. And that it is we are no longer trying to base decisions on how men and women interact based on gender but much more on rank or host visitor status. So the new guideline is that the high-ranking person should extend his or her hand, I to welcome the other person. But, but, but but it rarely happens because there's so much confusion around the handshake you give the higher ranking person a split second. And I mean, just a split second. And if he or she doesn't extend the hand you have to extend yours. The key is the handshake needs to take place in the US. It is the proper business greeting, and if you want to be taken seriously, you must shake hands and you must shake hands correctly..

"Many marriages today are in trouble and likely headed for divorce yet, interestingly more often than not, and this is the tragedy of many divorces more often than not it is embarrassingly and surprisingly little that has to be done to turn a very bad marriage into a very good marriage psychiatrist. Dr John Jacobs, author of the book all you need is love and other lies about marriage. And I believe that this this is because people who get married generally really love each other and generally really want their marriages to work and over time when they're disappointed they behave often very badly. And it takes very little positive reinforcement from a spouse for people to get their hope back. So what's the first step to fixing a broke? Marriage. If your spouse comes over to you and says, let's stop fighting. I really love you. I know what you need in this marriage. I'm gonna try my best to give it to you. If you're not getting what you want. Let me know what I could do better. If you take that attitude, and I really appreciate you. And I really glad I'm married you. If you start talking that way with your spouse, it is remarkable how fast he marriage. It looks like it's going absolutely nowhere, but downhill can reverse it at somethingyoushouldknow dot net. IT your important thing of the moment and getting to it as simple as it sounds is difficult in today's world of of a lot of something else's Jones Laughlin author of the book getting to it. When you want to define what it is for you. The first step is you need to stop. We're just show accustomed to working harder and faster, and and and not taking on wait a minute. Why am I not getting to it? And then looking at why am I not getting to you? And if we don't put something in place to try to determine what it is. Then we do spend our day on things that aren't as important when you know, what's important, your it. You have to. Schedule. It we say that you schedule your it's first and something else is lighter. Now that doesn't mean that they're necessarily be I in your day, but they are scheduled. I once you've done that it's beginning to build your day around the s versus hoping that you get it. Even when we know what our it is. It's important to realize that the it's kind of tap on the shoulder. They don't scream it's rarely scream at us. They wait patiently behind everything else. And so I think all of us have a degree of understanding our yet. But just that whole process of how are we going to get it how we're gonna put it into an already overloaded schedule. "So here's the question you have to get from point a to point b and it's raining so will you get wetter walking in the rain or running in the rain well let's look at the science if you run you get rained on from the top but you're also running sideways into the rain if you walk you'll get rained on from the top but you won't be running sideways into the rain so walking keeps you in the rain longer but will you be less wet by doing so no the physics is a little complicated but at any given second your getting just as wet whether you walk or run your speed does not affect how much water you walk into from the side it's the same at any speed just as snow plow will plow the same amount of snow regardless of how fast it's going the only variable is time so the solution is to spend the least amount of time in the rain meaning that you're better off running then walking and that is something you should know once again if you're a new listener in the last couple of episodes and you have a moment drop me a line and tell me how you found this podcast we're trying to figure out where this big jump and listenership came from and that would really that would really help you can email me at mike at somethingyoushouldknow dot net i'm mike carruthers thanks for listening today to something you should know.
