How does hockey reckon with an abusive power structure?
"By the time you finish listening to this podcast. It's likely there will be more stories out there about abusive hockey coaches right now as we are recording this and as you're listening to it. The sport is facing a reckoning. It began with the toppling of one of the biggest domino's in the game. Mike Babcock out as coach of the Toronto Maple leafs tonight. Every mounting losses position became more and more tenuous and tonight his reign lean over. leafs nation is over. Mike Babcock was fired by the Toronto. Maple leafs for the same reason. Tons of hockey coaches have been fired before him. His team was underachieving. He might have been a bigger name than those other coaches but still not unusual then. The story started during the two thousand sixteen seventeen season. Mitch Moore had a private meeting with Mike Babcock and the coach asked then rookie to list the players on the team from Best Work Catholic to worst martyr complied not realizing that that talk within show his list to some of the players ranked the lowest and not long after that it became clear. The stories weren't just about Mike Babcock. Major allegations made against Calgary flames head coach. Bill Peters a former. NHL Her Chemo Lou. who spend spend some time with the flames in the early part of this decade calling for his alleged use of racial slurs while they were both part of the Chicago Blackhawks Organization now players ears are saying publicly things that used to be kept behind closed doors at all cost and the NHL in almost every league below it is realizing that it has a problem problem or more accurately that it has had a problem for quite some time? Now the question is what happens next. What did they do about it? What changes changes in the leafs? They've been playing a lot better since they fired the guy who humiliated one of their best players who thought I'm Jordan Heath Rawlings. This is the big story. Jeff Blair is a senior writer at sports net dot CA. He is the CO host of writer's block on Sports Net. Five ninety fan every day. He has covered a lot of dressing rooms ends and locker rooms throughout his career. Hey Jeff how you doing short. I'm doing well you've You've covered a lot of dressing rooms and locker rooms over the years I was. I was thinking about this the other day when the stuff happened with the Chemo. Lou and Bill Peters out of thinking to myself. I ever seen a locker room. I thought something nothing really poisonous and happen. And I think because unbalanced I spent more time around baseball clubhouses than anything else and initially when I started reporting Winnipeg CFL locker rooms is kind of a little different than hockey. I mean baseball. There have been African American players. There've there've been Latino players in baseball has its issues but it's nothing to go on a clubhouse now and see that the white players are in the minority I mean that's just the way it is and the NFL. When I covered it's the same thing and I don't remember any relationship with a manager or coach or a team I thought was particularly toxic? I mean they're examples of tone deafness. But what I think happens more often than not in a lot of these situations is just the manager coach. Whatever you WANNA call it becomes tone-deaf two things? Well why don't you start then by explaining how we got here where it started with Mike. Babcock in the leafs. Yeah there's a couple of things first of all. I'm a little concerned that people are sort word of mixing. Mike Babcock not you but people in general people were kind of going all Mike Babcock and then Bill Peters. Because here's the thing Mike Babcock seems to have tried cried some Caveman Sports Psychology on Mitch. Martyr So tell us about that. Mitch Monitor the first year. The story is now now that everybody's confirmed Mike. Babcock wanted him to work harder. So Mike Babcock called them into his office and said list your teammates in terms of hardest working to least hardworking. And tell me where you'd put Yourself Yourself Mitch. Marna with coach wants to do this so he goes ahead and does that and Somehow and I I don't know when it came out but somehow Mike Babcock doc essentially went to some of the guys that were below martyring. Say Mitch thanks. She works harder than you. You know this guy's dog in it right now and he thinks that works harder than you and the best line out of the Whole Story and God love Mitch. Martin but the best line of the whole story's Mitch Marnie just kind of shrugging and going nobody took it seriously right. You know it's like that's just that's just babs so I mean their stories. You know you can go. God stories about would coaches used to do for motivating players or trying to catch players airs. I Never Scotty Bowman Scotty. Bowman got tired of his team's missing curfew. So Scotty Bowman would go down. And I can't remember which city this went down to the front desk of the hotel and I think curfew was midnight. Went Down to the front desk of the Hotel at eleven thirty gave a stick to the dorm and said do me a favor when the guys come in get them to sign the stick and we'll we're going to auction off to charity so the next day Scott he goes into the locker eight. These are all the guys that showed up after midnight. Their names are on the stick so I mean stuff like that is you know. That's all part of an old school. Coaching you mentality. Whatever you think of it? Yeah it's and I mean at the heart of the the coach player relationship and this and this is why we'll talk specifically about. Bill Peterson Chemo. Lucas IT'S A. It's a point I think people are missing. I mean at the heart of a coach player relationship. It's a power relationship. I'm the coach. I control the most important part of your career. I control your time I control. How many starts you're gonNA make I control? Will how many at bats you're going to get I control if you're going to be coming in the ninth inning. I control if you're going to start back to back games like Then I control. You're earning power. This is sort of at the route. That's the traditional relations traditional relationship. Is that changing it is in the NHL. I find this fascinating because the four major sports in North America all right now if you look at sort of the players relationship to to power in the game the NBA players leak. It just is players are getting lots of money They make a a lot of money from shoe deals so they're comfortable financially outside of what they're earning contract like Shaquille O'Neal didn't spend any money he made playing basketball. He invested all all he lived off. His shoe deals coaches have no power over anybody in the NBA the NFL's you know you're disposable piece of meat. There's no such thing as guaranteed contract. Baseball's always had a very very strong players association. It's Kinda splintered now and I think we're kind of in an every man for himself air but what's happened in hockey is there has been an an influx of really talented really young players and because of the way the NHL 's collective bargaining agreement is setup. You Essentially Ashley. Now have a bunch of guys who were twenty two twenty three or twenty four making eight million dollars a year under contract for five six or seven years and that's the biggest difference to me. Is that players always used to make more than the coach and this is specifically the NHL players always used to make more than the coach. But they've got more term So if you're Mike Babcock and you've got three years left on your contract you've got Mitch Monitor. He's got six years left. He's making ten and a half million dollars a year. How do you? How do you motivate that? How do you manage them? It would take us. Ice Type. Doesn't matter to him take two minutes ice time away from me. I'm getting ten million dollars a year and by the way I got a job here for years down the road and you say that so hockey ocoee more than any other sport I think is is going through. This and hockey is going to half the data and and and the coaches are going to have to. The players aren't going to have to adapt. The coaches are going to have to debt. And this this gets the Bill Peter Situation and and why I think this is particularly vile you know first of all. I mean there's no statute of limitations and racism so I've heard people will make the case. Well he said this ten years ago three organizations ago he wasn't even with the flames. You have somebody claiming that he. He used the N.. Word that he used a racial epithet. You have that player's teammates backing you up. You have subsequent you have players coming out. Who played for Bill? Peterson Peterson Carolina. Saying hey he physically abused me. You have players coming out and saying yeah not only did he. Physically abused Rod brindamour. Not only did he did. He physically abused guys. But you've got player saying oh by the way we spoke. The Ron Francis who was general manager the team at the time and he didn't do anything wrong. There was something but the Akeem loose. The situation is really. I find it really bothersome. Because what was he supposed to do. You know these guys are playing in the American Hockey League They're not making a lot of money. Bill Peters when he was coaching that team the Rockford ice hawks. He held the future in his hands. so if you're a guy like a chemo Lou and you're trying to establish yourself or you're trying to get your career going going to your general manager and writing out your head. Coaches racist is probably not not a good career. Move and I think more than anything else. What this says is that at that time? Ten years ago that organization Chicago Blackhawks. There wasn't a structure in place. I mean I'm not gonNA say that guys don't yell things at each other in the locker room or on the ice and we we know they do. We know that racial epithets unfortunately are still a part of the sort of the on Ice Onfield Dialogue and sports. I don't think this happens now though like if we were rewinding this Chemo Lou had been Ah. I don't think that happens. 'cause he reports to somebody or he goes on social media then and it's taken care of but it bothers me that people are saying that some people are saying well you know ten years ago and nobody else stood up. It's people have to understand Dan that again. This gets to that that power relationship between the player and the coach. There's no way the player could you know what are you GonNa do. You're going to sacrifice your long term financial future because of this. I mean I'm not. I'm not saying that means. Bill Peters is right but hockey I think more than any other more than any other sport just by the the nature of how players are developed. Kids leave home. Kids go to town cities. They're billeted with people dependent on the structure. They are dependent on on the power structure there absolutely dependent on the power structure. And I think maybe that's what has created this culture around hockey the the NHL is really really trying. I think to find a way and I mean the NHL in general teams coaches are trying to find a way to deal with this the new age the players the the ultimate lesson the lesson from hopefully for this whole thing with Bill Peters is that there has to be every organization has to look at itself often say do we have the structures in

"Down the dock that version of stocks you know couldn't couldn't push it over the line to to get to a Stanley Cup final but it's not so with the prospect I turn to even sacrifice a few standings points now and then in in favor of sticking with the prospects rather than going with that reflect so expectations are lower in Anaheim the digital art in the club is very much in transition I think that there could be a lot of things happening at the trade deadline but I think that most of what the doctor during this year it's hard to solidify is Dallas Eakins the guy to leave them behind the bench and are you taking any calls when it comes to Mike Babcock possibly being a guy who coaches this team again well yeah no I don't I'm not getting any one of us far just a couple days now but I'm not the Mike Babcock about hello although although like the hi please let let the the guys created in the office sold I think that's what the doctor needs daylight I think you were lights wealth of young players I don't think we should throw the baby out with the bath water here I I would give Dallas safety saw all the time HM I think that organizationally I'll just point to you know Cochran rich you can these you know cost is a really really helped player don't come you're gonna have to do something Nick Ritchie was a high tech but if the colts don't come gonna have to do something to make a lot of sense.
Mike Babcock Fired, Replaced by Sheldon Keefe as Maple Leafs' New Head Coach
"Former Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock it not so well the warm home he was relieved of his duties according to Leafs PR and believe Sheldon Keefe has been named the club's new ad to coach so it's not an interim thing it's like they showed Mike Babcock the door his office had been packed yet and shell just steps right into

"Outlet called the break. I gotta check it out. If you love hockey belly van bodies. Been a long time. Scotty what the hell's going on body? I so what did you think of the job canes dead tonight divorce game seven? Oh, I loved it. I didn't think they do it. I did the game the other night on NHL radio. And I saw them get demolished in Washington dot, no doubt. It's been a home ice advantage series. But they looked hesitant tentative. Cautious. Timid all the above and boy today get throttled Mike cap team that played as well as they have on this short playoff run so far. But then tonight, you got Justin Williams there you got real believability in him than love playing for rod Brindamour. Holy smokes. Today showed up, and they kick some you know, what I'm impressed really impressed by that effort now questionable. Call we're not gonna lie to the call later in the game. The park was underneath Morales. Gotta bang bang play. Ovechkin put it in. I thought the puck was loose. The officials call on the ice goal was no goal right away signaling that Ovechkin pushed I guess the goal is Pat into the net but the puck at the back of the net. So little. Controversy. But what I think doesn't matter the call and the ice stands in the caps ended up losing pretty big to the Carolina Hurricanes. I gotta tell you that that call from what Carver high said to be. And then you just said to me because I didn't see it. I was driving in. And I didn't see it's all I'm sure I'll see it at some point another. They're showing highlights right now. But the thing is is that if you both thought that it was a bad call how in God's name. Did they get it? It sounds like they got it wrong. It seems like they did in you know, I don't think the lot league. Even if they go to review initiated it beat her by coach situation room loves to overturn the call. However, they usually utilize what's called a good hockey play pretty general term that the term that they use if they going to overturn something or or say, they call a goal or whatever they're called just a good hockey fancy way of saying, hey, you know, what this way should accounted or maybe not in. I don't know. I thought this one my initial thought process when when it happened was that they were gonna look at it right away and realize the puck was in the back of the net really before Ovechkin made contact with the Pat the goalie, and he may have made contact with a stick. It was not like there was no go 'interference any fan out. There's one Mellon talking about there's no goalie interference vegetables following up on a rebound on a quick bang bang playing front, and he went out the puck after I think it was coups nets. Try to jam it alleged can comes in and goes after it marasmus down on the ice. And I think the puck was loose. But they're official. Didn't see it that way he thought that Ovechkin pushed the pads into the net. I think the puck was in the back of the net though, then the pads got pushed. Yeah. I just thought and I'm looking at it now for a third time. And I you know that that's a goal. That's a goal of. Yes me. Honestly. That's just a terrible call and. The game would have been if you asked me so much better if it was three all than and then they scored again, and again, so it's over. But now they're going to play game seven you Senator earlier, it's a, you know, a home ice edge type of series. I still like Washington in a seven game. Let me ask you this question. Do you the stars tonight? One going to the third. They better win this game. Does I think they're winning back in Nashville? I know they've won there. But I don't think they're doing it again. I tend to agree with you on that. I do think that Nashville is Ben bit split personality like in this series. You know, they haven't power socks. They just can't get it going there over so far they get Brian Boyle back in and that helps him and still they're missing some big physical presence boil helps in that regard. The one thing I will tell you though, is you know, I get home ice for Nashville, the Dallas big boys. You know, the send the bagan there been say Radulovich have been dominant. And even if they're dot scoring in this game. They've got that fear factor that they can turn it on. And then they can make something happen. But I look I agree. Dallas definitely wants to close it tonight to be safe and not take the chance to having to win back and Nash. So Billy javale. What does NHL never get Nessin and check out his podcast on the ad letting the breakout. So let me ask you that was really impressive. I thought the bra. Ruins win in game. Six to force game. Seven back in Boston tomorrow night. Smart. I got two of them one in San Jose the other one in in Boston that will be first break. Getting those games are going to be and it's awesome. It is awesome. I we last year we had a game seven in the same series between the Bruins and the lease. And it was it was it was delicious. Crazy. You know? What? I mean, it wasn't the most textbooks. I'll hockey, but it was emotionally up and down in the Bruins are losing. They get going in the third period on a Tory crew goal in the place TD garden goes ballistic. And they ended up winning a game. That again, wasn't wasn't a Nicasio. But it still is beautiful. If you're a Bruins fan now, you've got this one more year mature leaf team common in. Yeah. You've got Mike Babcock behind the bench. You got John Taveras? The biggest free agent acquisition. You know past summer, you know, going into play for the Toronto Maple leaves his hometown team against the the Bruins that team. That's have there. The numbers in two thousand thirteen regularly in the playoffs. And I can't wait for it. I I mean, I this is what I really truly appreciate doing what I do for a living is being a part of one of these games and watching it and especially for a team that you cover all year. I do a lot with the NHL Merrick. But I do even more with the Boston Bruins on Nessin. And it just like the energy is phenomenal. I get I still I started to Bob inside decide jumping up and down a little bit. When they start doing the anthems and everything you just you just wanna get going. So do you think John Ericsson is one goal when they get eliminated tomorrow night? L enjoy watching the islanders and the next round. Yeah. I don't think. So I think you'll lab -solutely. He's such a nice guy. He probably would say, no big deal. I I mean, I it is Gionta verisign. What's been interesting about what would seen their Scotty? Is it Mike Babcock is used them equally shutdown role? I think as a offense of role 'cause they've, you know, they're going more. I think he's relying on Austin Matthews to do more of the scoring as you mentioned the one he's been going ahead with Chris Berge on an awful lot. And I think I'm surprised that I know a few other people are to perhaps, especially at home that Babcock hasn't gotten them away from that match up a little bit more. Billy Jaffe are dead friend from NHL never did you. I couldn't even bully watching late night and one hurdle head that shorty in double overtime. I couldn't even believe it. Like, I gotta tell you. It's one thing to lose in overtime. No matter where yards another thing that lose on shorty. Yeah. No. I get it. And I know Mark under floor you could tell by his reaction right away. He's like, oh, no. You're kidding me. I will say this. This is not defending it either. But not being a goalie. You know, I got understand. I I understand that the things that make it harder for the NHL level just from talking to them and being around the game so much, but when the follow through from from tamasha hurdles shot he'd the puck didn't hit the stick. But his stick hit the defender stick shaped Theodore, I I wonder if that threw off Mark under Philly flurry just enough just at millisecond Scotty that threw him off. And he didn't and get enough read on it. I think the puck dipped. I just don't think he got a great read on it again that is not excuse. You can even tell flurry was perturbed by not couldn't believe by not making the, but you know, those things happen fast hurdle is the kid who after game five said was his sands in in in San Jose. Hey, we'll be back here. I don't think he was being bravado. Like, I don't think he was being Messier. Like, I think he just said, hey, you know, what we want to come back and play for you guys. Again there by the way, mardi Jones said what almost sixty save is the guy that has been pretty brutal the end of the season in early on in the playoffs. And that was a pretty big comeback. Save effort for him for the. Yeah. I gotta tell you. I can't take him over guy. That's one three Stanley Cups in a game seven. I'm I'm thoroughly with you. You know, it shark tank is still it's a glorious place because it's nothing too fancy. It's tight. It's seventeen thousand change on top and everything and the place is gonna be crazy. But with that said Vegas is used to play into hostile places. They've got one of the best home ice advantage is now she's in the league to I still feel. It's funny. I'm saying this. I think Vegas is battle-tested. Now only been the team for one year. Right. But they went through so much last year. I think they're tested. I do and I love Gerard Galant and his composure fiery intensity. I think that flurry does hold an advantage over Martin Jones. I despite the fact that Jones had that big save or the big game last night say making fifty eight saves. I still think flurry does have that advantage there actually a better team. I think they're deeper. I think they have more dangerous weapons on that team. Now, they got better from last year Stanley Cup. Final run, Billy great stuff tonight. Always love avenue on a bench. Enjoy the rest of the blast. We'll catch up again. Always a pleasure to Yang CBS sports radio. New. Billy, Jaffe checkout is new podcast the breakout on the athletic signed for not day. Here's Chris lopresti, all hair. Sports play. I got in the end.

"Mike Babcock from TM some sports. Our friend of the show. Chris win sending me a message telling me a heads up both king and Omar not getting kicked out of the house. That is very very true. I misspoke. I wish they were both out though. I wish that was true. But they're not just so happens that it appears at least as though king is out of some certain things, but he's not he's not completely gone. That's that's that's that's actually very very important wasn't thrown out. He'll be on some key. He was throwing at us some committees. Certainly she should be as well. So I agree with Chris. Thank you for that. By the way, another story out. Not good news for Donald Trump. Maybe maybe good news. I don't know if Cohen loses, but he's suing the Trump organization saying he was denied one point nine million in legal fees after cooperating with prosecutors that many other subjects were talking about this, Omar situation. Paul Manafort, stormy Daniels lawsuit against Trump on hush money that was thrown out to five seven five three nine six the number to call in. And he will not find a more interactive show than the Vegas take. You're a big part of the show just as much as I am. That's for sure maybe more. So we appreciate all the calls and burnin you've been waiting patiently on hold. We appreciate that. How are you? I'm brian. How are you? Brian doing good. What's on your mind? Well, I I'll be Manafort. I've noticed you've already pretty much decided Trump's gonna pardon this guy. I think there's a good chance of it obviously on making it assumption. I don't know that to be one hundred percent true. But yeah, I I think he will burn. Why why do I think so? Well, because he was he's been asked before taking it off the table. I'm also looking at the fact that Manafort was a very very close friend of his Manafort has not squealed not like Cohen has certainly that's for sure. And based on the circumstance, I'm making an assumption. It's kind of like looking at a basketball game or handicapping a football game. You're never one hundred percent. Sure. But I'm just going with my read on this one burn. And I do think that there will be a pardon. I could be wrong. I could be wrong. So now, we know for a fact.

"Join us Mike Babcock and teams he's going to be here in just a few minutes. We got Mr. Johnny casts from the review journal coming up at the bottom of the hour. A little bit of breaking news as far as Jesse spotlight situation is concerned just gets weirder. And weirder sources on empire on the set are saying that. For thirty minutes. He was this is this is according to people that were on the empire set that small said quote to everyone on the cast. I'm sorry. I've put you all through this and not answering any calls. I wanted to say I'm sorry. And you know, me I would never do this to any of you. You are my family. I swear to God, I did not do this. So he is still denying all this after that. Apparently, he left a set. He was crying a lot. And producers said he had to come back. They said, hey, you gotta come back man because he was so emotional on right now as we speak. He is currently shooting on scene. He is denying it all of it. To everyone on the set of this. Which is to me is just is unbelievable that at this point. You would you would deny all round doing this. Just absolutely positively crazy. This is believable is this narcissism. I mean, what after everything that took place in the courtroom. They read text messages. How do you deny this stuff? I don't understand. How do you deny is that he is denying this? He's going to try to make this as part of his narrative that he is completely insane. And maybe he can run with this in the courts. Clearly, he's insane. The guy punched himself in the face like it was a scene from fight club. Right. Just kind of an extension of all of that. Yeah. Insane person. Who did all that stuff would also do this? I see all these jokes on social media. One of them is a picture of small lead. And it says Jesse don't don't don't beat yourself up over this. Thank you sent me. Four viral means today. This is Alvin. Semi viral main once in your life. This is a four today. This is a bizarre case. And it's so sad. It's funny. Joining us right on the line, by the way, TMZ has done such a fantastic job covering this story. And of course, Mike Babcock from TMZ sports. He joins us every Thursday. Does a great job. But I got to get his opinion on this. I know this isn't he covers the sports angles on TMZ. Does a great job doing that? But Mike, what do you make of this jussie smollet stuff? I mean, the you guys have been getting a lot of hits on TMC because of this guy. You gotta be happy about that. But this is this is a wild story, isn't it? Yeah. We was wild three meats, and you're right. Brian about the sports, but just being in that PNG newsroom it was impossible. Kind of being thrilled with all that was going on. From Wendy news. I broken that early morning. And and thinking jesse's Malek was packed. And it was just the most atrocious sickening attack that you could ever imagine your racial, homophobic, community disgusting. And then just the way things started to slowly turn. I am disgusted by frankly. Just me as a person talking not a reporter. But I'm sure absolutely disgusted by him. I watch the GNA interview yesterday night and just the way he was he was just still so indignant, and and talked about how the people who were doubting him wanted to tear the country apart in separate us as a as a people and just to know all along that he was sitting there, and he was making that up, and he did this all because he wanted more money, and he wanted to be more famous especially given the fact that say he had gotten away with this. He would be a champion for homosexuals and African Americans, and he was going to leverage that to increase his fame. Just as you that that that is that is so disgusting. It's hard even confident. Do you think you should do jail time? Mike. Yeah. I would I would love to see that. I think that's what they deserve. Thank you should go to jail. I think he faces up to three years in jail but could get off with probation beer. Right. I think he should go to you should go to prison a little bit of time. And I think you should also have to pay back the city of Chicago for all the resources that they had to waste just I'm amazed that they were able to to track these guys down and just listening to the Commissioner of the Chicago police today and just all the work that he detected did. And it made me that they were able to track these two brothers down. And then that is such a good. Great policing. I mean, just think how many thousands and thousands of unsolved crimes. Gago, and they could have been working on things that were far more important. And it turns out the payback. Mike them, Mike you bring up such a great point. And and I'm glad you did. You know, the Chicago police department in Chicago is all they take a lot of flack for all the crime that happens there. These guys did such a phenomenal job in this case. And you could see in the press conference this morning. They were very visibly upset at this whole thing. And you're absolutely right. But yeah, we should give them kudos for really doing a good job taking care of this. You know, I brought up a sports reference earlier in the show. You can tell me if you agree or disagree. You remember when Tiger Woods did his press conference in his apology? I think this is going to be very similar. I don't think it's going to be heartfelt. And I'm making a prediction. I don't think he's going to admit that he did this for more money for filming and to enhance the screen own. I think he's going to do. I think he's gonna use the excuse of being an African American and being a homosexual. I think he's going to bring that up. And I think that's what he's gonna do. Yeah. It wouldn't surprise me. It also wouldn't surprise me. If he just keeps on denying that he lied. I mean, you talked to people who actually spoke with him the day before yesterday. And he told them he didn't do what he told them. You don't believe me? I would never do this to I would never lie to you. So, you know, even when everything seems so clear now that this guy made this whole thing, and it was a ruse in a hoax. He's still lying to people. You guys just posted. Maybe we never right. You're right. He was just onset today. And you guys just posted this sort of breaking news where you guys I guess somebody at TMZ spoke with some people on the set, which is which is great reporting. And he apologized everyone behaved he's saying he's innocent that he didn't do this. And it got your point. Jiving four. Exactly, exactly. But then says that I didn't do anything wrong. I'm I'm a victim here. Yeah. Exactly. Apologizing for exactly it. It doesn't make any sense at all. And based on the circumstances. And what was said in the courtroom today in the prosecutors? This guy's one hundred and twenty percent guilty. This is not just nonsense. But anyway, we'll have to wait and see what happens, but you guys have done such a phenomenal job covering this story. Here's a crazy situation that yeah, sure here's a crazy situation yesterday. A big Jim boeheim fan of always been a big fan of his he's fantastic coach he's had his issues with one of his assistant coaches, or if you remember that whole scandal that took place, but Jim boeheim usually this guy that stays out of the spotlight when it comes to stuff like that. He's just a great basketball coach. But this is a horrible situation where apparently there was some sort of car accident and the car accident happened in the middle of the road and behind didn't see these guys, and they got guy got out of his car and killed him in an accident. This is horrible. What what what's going on? What's the latest terrible? They Syracuse plays. They beat up blue ego. And the gym is presumably driving home. And like you said there was an accident. This this got out of the car, and they didn't see him hit him, unfortunately. And as a result of the accident, the guy died cops say they gave him a field sobriety test on the team to make sure that he hadn't been drinking more than drunk or in any way past that, no signs of impairment. They said that he made a call the nine one one right away, he stopped. So he did everything the right way p put out a statement earlier today saying that he was heartbroken as you'd imagine that that killed somebody. It doesn't seem like he did anything wrong. It just seems like just a terrible terrible accident, very unfortunate. It just appears to be that when you're going to get out of your car, and I don't even care if you're on the side of the road. You always have to be vigilant you have to be looking around, and it appears as though it's just an unfortunate tragedy that happens. I wanted to talk to you a little bit about Zion. Williamson of course, everyone's been talking about this injury that he had an apparently now Nike is trying to scramble to figure out what caused this situation what caused this quote, unquote. Shoe fail. I mean what what do you make of this? Yeah. So there I spoke with somebody. I I have a friend who has a relative who is. High ranking guy at Nike, and instead that first of all they want to know what happened there in various by this as you would imagine. But he also said from a business standpoint that they were having meetings this morning, and they were concerned that during the biggest college basketball game maybe in the last five years outside of March. With everybody watching with celebrities in the audience that that this in they're worried that that will affect them signing future. NBA stars guys like Zion, Williamson and other college basketball players. So from a business standpoint day are not only embarrassed. But they are worried that this is gonna hurt their bottom line now. Yeah. Paid two or three grand for tickets to that game. Which is unbelievable. When you think about it? Do you think that considering Zion is probably the lock for the number one pick a knee injury is a big deal. Yeah. He has he's going to the national player of the year. He is proven the no one can stop by the college level. Should he play again this year or not I wouldn't play another minute? If I was I wouldn't either that hurts because I you know, I think I'm a competitive person. And I understand that there's a little bit of light your teammates down. But Niane Williamson it is worth possibly a billion dollars. He might he might actually be you might be a billion dollar athlete in his first five or ten probably five years in the league. And he he might he might get a half a billion dollar shoe deal. I mean, this guy is right. Huge. Right. So how then can you rationalize going out during playing? I don't care if he has an eight million dollar insurance policy today. Peanuts compared that'll be goes into that only goes into play if he's worse than the sixteenth pick, which will never happen. Right. Right. You figure somebody would take a chance on him. No matter what it injury. So I would not play another with I love college basketball. It doesn't make any sense resigned. And apparently Denver Nuggets stars Ahah Thomas is speaking out on this. You guys have this story Thomas is quoted as saying Zion. Sit your ass down. I said it was Bs but use the real words. We're stars in college. They they know it's up now. You would like if I knew then what I know. Now, I would not play college basketball. There's you can't go any higher than one. If you're no, no, you can't. Now, coincidentally, the NBA made a statement today that apparently they've they're lobbying with the players union to drop the age to eighteen. Yeah. I wish they would. I don't think you can go serve in the military. Vital war. Right. Why guy? The craziest part of that is even if it was eighteen last year resign Williamson was born on July sixth. So he would have been seven like. Like that. I think he would have been seventeen years old. Plate. Right. If you if you graduate and you're able to play basketball, let them go play. And if the guy makes the wrong decision, then I feel bad for those guys if they ended up in their career because they think they're better than they are too bad. Why restrict guys who can make a living put their bodies that risk and not allow them to play un-american itself in American and you look at Zion. I mean, no one stands chance against this guy. He is so far above anybody at the college level. He has no business even being in the game at all. I wanted to go ahead. Mike. It's almost it's almost not almost feel bad for the other guys trying to guard him that's bad for the tenders. I'll tell you who else I feel bad for a Colorado Avalanche fan. But if you're just joining us, we'll get to that Mike Babcock TMZ sports had to throw in a hockey story here because we are a hockey town with the Vegas Golden Knights guys. Have a story up there. That is absolutely hilarious. And it's it's worded as worst boyfriend of all time in a puck catching incident that happened at an avalanche game. Can you tell us exactly what happened? I watched this video. But I want you to describe it for us because it's really funny. Yeah. We Wednesday night. The jets game in Denver and one of the players talk the puck with his stick into the fans guy catches it. And he's got his girlfriend sitting right next to his left. And for some reason he gives it to the girl in front of him. We didn't know at all. All. Girlfriend looks so mad so upset and not only did he got her the puck. I watched this thing like three or four times. And I noticed he also elbowed her in the head when he went because. He hit her in the head. And then didn't even give her the puck hitting her gave it to some other girl advice to this guy is later that night. You're you're not gonna score a goal if that's the way you treat your girlfriend you're going to get into the penalty box. That's for sure. No doubt about it. Hey, mike. Great job, man. Always appreciate it. When you catch up with us. We'll we'll catch you next week. Have a great weekend. See, mikey? There you go Mike Babcock TMZ sports. Joining us the TMC is just on everything man, they have hat..

"Two two five seven five three nine six talking. A little UNLV hoops. Let's go to Brad, Brad. Thanks for calling in. How are you? Oh, hey, thanks for taking my call. Call role is so called twice. Brad. That's all right. This was this was so enticing. I call you know. I mean, the night are such a great story. You know, bring a winner here. Look look at the result look at the liquor. The response. I think I think UNLV exactly what you're saying. They need to they need to get another. Coach overpay if they have to I don't know if they can get any input from a cow pari or somebody like that. But junior college transfers one one and done NBA prospects. This place is ripe. There's no excuse. There's no excuse why they can't re this should be the easiest place in the world to recruit. So there's no excuse why they're not getting great players, Brad. And by the way, thank you for the call. Gotta get to some other callers. Brad appreciate that. There's no excuse zero. And this is year three. And if people wanna make it out to be like year one Marvin Menzies awash that's fine last year. They had I mean, Brandon McCoy he was a number ten player in the country. He was a five star kid. Juiston was a high rated four stark enemy. It's not like he hasn't been able to recruit. It's just a matter of development and catering his system to his players, which he does not do. No. And I don't I just don't see him as being the right guy for the job. But again, let's let's see what you guys think out there to five seven five three nine six. Let's go to John John. Thanks for calling in. How are you? John. Hey, thank you for taking my call. Sure. No on firing these guys and things I think they should get rid of Sanchez as well. But I understand that for Titas has a big investment guide. Let him go. Yeah. Well, gestion it would be bring Bobby nine out of retirement here for a couple of years. On the strike narrow let him go back into retirement. Well, we're looking for other. We'll hang on John. Let let let me let me let me address. Let me just address. What what what you just said? John is not coming your Bobby knights not going to be coaching again, number one. But as far as the fatigue can action. How old is Bobby is he he's up? He's up there. As far as what John as far as what you just said about the football program. He has to make a ballgame next year or he's done. I guarantee you. Hundred percent. Thank you. I agree with that. He should have done this year. And you know, what John if he doesn't make a bowl game with the raiders stadium being open to UNLV a big time. Coach is going to want to come here to that's possible. Spousal. Yup. John. Thanks for the call, man. Appreciate it. Thanks. Sure. Thanks John to five seven five three nine six zero two two five seven five three nine six. The number to call. We've got Mike Babcock from TMZ sports coming up here in just a few minutes where he's going to kind of share with us. Tom Brady was asked the question. Are you going to be going to the White House? Find out what his response was. And there are a few few players on the New England Patriots. That have said that they are not going to the White House. We're going to find out who those players are. They do such a great job at TMZ. They really do. They're so awesome. But again in regards to UNLV, we all want the same. At least. I would hope we all want the same. We want them to succeed. We want them to win. We want a reasonable buffet before every game. And after every game you're talking about the media food. Nobody cares. Not everyone's on the media like us. Nobody. Nobody cares. Let's go to Bill Bill. Thanks for going into the Vegas. Take. Our you. Pretty good guys. You know, the thing that I would like to really see if somebody could possibly speak off the record would Lon Kruger. He knows what's going on. He's not gonna come back here. Something could say I'll up seven or ten names. You got an amber here. I got a name. How about his son? I would totally support. Kevin krueger. He was a great player on the floor. He's learned from his dad. He he's been assistant coach. Yeah. I think I would actually be okay with that. I would like I would let I think Kevin would be a good idea. The problem with. She likes somebody like the kids graduating with good care. He is a good example because he's been around his dad and those kids. That's a really good point. My only question on cabinets candy recruit. Well, you got to hire the right guys around. You gotta you gotta hire the right guys in the right staff to do it. But kevin. Here's here's the key word Bill money. He would be cheap. This would be his first job. Usually. I am not for hiring a guy who's never been. He's never. I that's why I wasn't big on Bill. I'm sorry. I wasn't big on on rice, Dave rice. I almost Bill O'Reilly Bill as the caller. I don't know why. So that but I wasn't big on rice because he'd never been a head coach before. But I gotta tell you something with Kevin Kruger. I think it's different basketball his whole life and his father being Lon Kruger. He played here. Just like Dave rice here. I like Kevin to give advice on his dad's coach reverend's dare retires or even when he's coaching right? Not perfect choice. Very good. Thank you Bill. I appreciate the call. I would be all four Kevin. I really would. And there's not a lot of guys that I would support right now. But but Kevin would certainly be one of them. Let's take a quick break. When we come back. What players have decided they are not going to the White House from the New England Patriots Mike Babcock from TMZ sports will give us that answer next. You're.

"Mike Babcock. So like I said it's going to be a good day. Good day and believe it or not a little bit later on. I'm going to talk soccer and not how you think not what you think it's going to be sharp. It's going to be smart gonna be a really good take. That's coming up later on. But I why don't we start with some college football urban Meyer is where I wanna start herb met with the media yesterday to explain his decision to step down after the Rose Bowl. Now, I could play you some clips from that presser. But why don't we be honest about something? There's really only one question that anybody cares about only one question that really matters. Nobody is really interested in why he's stepping down. Because you know, you're not gonna get a straight answer from him on that one. So the only question that really matters is is he going to coach again, and it's a fair question because yesterday was his third retirement since two thousand nine it's a hell of a lot of retirements if you get fired three times in less than a decade. That's. Problem. If you retire though, three times in less than a decade. That's. Well, I've got no idea. What that is. Because that just doesn't happen. Most people don't drive three different cars in less than a decade. And this guy's rolling through retirements like their least in what is a fair question. Given herbs past you knew that was not much of a chance that you would get a good answer. You see urban Meyer has a really interesting relationship with the truth. Let's just say that it's a strained relationship that he likes to characterize as misstatements or failed memories. And then when he pulls crap like that he thinks he's getting over if for some people, maybe he does. But when you look at this guy's track record when you know how this guy operates to me. It's all pretty hilarious or would be if it didn't involve so much denying and covering for some allegedly heinous acts, which is why this following exchange is such classic urban Meyer. A reporter asks. And I quote is this truly it for your football career is this it truly it for for your football career. That's a complicated question. And then I'll try to answer it the best. I can some jumping right there. No. It's not. That's not a complicated question. It's actually a really simple question if very simple, yes. Or no question one that you had to know was going to come up at that press conference and you still start with. Well, it's a really complicated question. The let's not get into that yet. Today, nine one one caller could not believe how ill-prepared herb was for that question. Then again, if urban Meyer was the guy who urban Meyer proclaims himself to be then this whole thing would actually be kinda sad. Right. Because then it would be the departure of a guy who has a great football coach. But also a moral leader a pillar of the community who was being cut down by his own poor health. You see if urban Meyer was the urban Meyer. He thinks he is he has the brain to be the best football coach in the country and a brain cyst deal will not let him compete at the highest level that he wants the tragic irony. There would be so thick. It's almost Shakespearian except urban Meyer is not your reminder. He thinks he is or wants you to think he is. That's why this whole thing. Feels like a big joke. Oh, and speaking of jokes. Why don't we get back to the rest of his answer? Well, that's a complicated question ultra. I answered the best. I can is that. I tried to say that in the statement. And this is home. This is where I grew up. My it's not healthy. But I can't work every day with fear of letting people like Archie Griffin and migrate state of oil are straight state of Ohio on this incredible university down because this is home graduate of Ohio State, and we have the best fans in the land. And I didn't want Lauderdale's got it got it. All right, then. So what that means is you are going to coach again. Right. Because you didn't say that you weren't really nobody's buying that crap slinging around right about now. I mean after the freaking question because then it was asked again will you coach again urban as you sit here. Now, do you believe you will not coach again, I believe I will not coaching. Are you fairly certain? So I believe I will not coach again, and I'm quote fairly certain. So you've got three answers right include the following muddying the waters with it's a complicated question hedging with. I believe I will not coach again, and then hedging even more with being quote fairly certain. I will not coach again, man, there's so much wiggle room. There. You could drive a Mack truck through it come on, man. You didn't even bother trying to sound authentic with it. And the longer that press conference went the less convinced. He was that he was done by the end of that presser. I thought he was going to announce that he had taken the job at USC like somebody asked him one more time if they asked him one more time, he just rip out a UC and yell fight on this us done. He's done coaching at Ohio State, but he's not done coaching. He knows it. That's why he would not answer the question. Question. See this guy can't stay away his body his brain, actually, maybe telling him that he can't keep coaching. But his ego won't let them stop. So he can sign another one of those family contracts replenishes to take care of himself and be present with all his loved ones. And he will he will for a little while until the next great opportunity comes along. And then he will bounce again. Because this is what this guy does. He wins a hell of a lot of football games. He crosses a hell of a lot of lines in order to do it. He lies about it. Misrepresents it. Where's out his welcome? After building yet, another renegade program. And then he retires only to come right back. In other words, he doesn't retire he quits, and then he does come back, and he will again, he will again, he always does. So if somebody's offering me a line or an opportunity to bet whether herb coaches, again, I'm gonna hit that thing hard because there's no way this guy's done. You know, it I know it most of all he knows it or he would have owned that retirement yesterday. But he didn't he never does. And if you can't answer the easiest question ever, are you done coaching. Then you know, it's just a matter of time before he does it yet again. And one more thought I'm curious how do you think that the Ohio State administration fewest right about? Now, they stick their neck out. They shamed themselves. They sell their soul to the devil to keep this guy. And what do you get for your troubles for what you did? The very distinct possibility. This guy is going to coach some other program in the near future Orion day, Ryan day seems like a helluva coach everybody who's been around day raves about day. He might in fact, be the next Lincoln Riley, and maybe they'll come out of this, okay? From a football standpoint. But they stuck by a guy who brought scandal to their doorstep, and they ducks out the back door a few months later. But that's what you get when you deal with urban. Did it in Florida dared, Ohio State? That's where he is. He wins a of a lot of football games. It's a damn good football coach now great coach. But he burns hot, and he'll make up a bunch of crap about how he's there to bowl young men and treat women with respect. Then he'll let us players and coaches. Essentially, whatever the hell they want, and then he'll leave and then he'll leave destruction in his wake. So the next school that hires him, and I think there will be another one had better know that know that I believe I went on coach again, that's not I'm not coaching again. That's not have had to mazing run. That's not I'm done. I'm retired. I believe I will not coach again, I believe coaching again. How certain are you about that? Fairly certain. Yeah. Yeah. I believe he will coach again, and I'm fairly certain about that one eight hundred six three six eight six eight six. All right. Look is more things today and Sammy's coming up next Klay. Thompson you see Klay Thompson go in on the Cavaliers calling them bombs and idiots. Clones. Do not be idiots. But I think it's okay. To talk about bums Klay. Thompson calling the Cavaliers bombs in idiots is not a green light for you idiots to come with bumps smack. That's not what that was. He was not making fun of them for not having a place to live. He called them bombs athletically, professionally. It's actually awesome. The best kind of bumps smack. I mentioned that I've gotta take on soccer. And I'm not who you think I am. I'm not to trot out some tire take about how soccer is not a sport. But rather reason to riot, blah, blah, blah is not in one thousand nine hundred four Maka trot that out there. I've got a very well reasoned. Very intelligent take on soccer. And if you're into the world sport, you're gonna like this take you might not agree with it. We will have to respect it because it's very smart. And if you hate soccer and use want me to talk about people bagging up blood and urine and throwing at each other. Then you're not gonna like this take because that's not what this is. You see like a lot of you. Clones. I don't recycle tired material. Evolve. I grow a change. I'm not saying I like soccer. But I saw something that happened in soccer that I like a lot that story's coming up later on. Mike Gundy goes Mike Gundy, again, man, I love this guy. Absolutely. Love this guy. That story is coming up too. Really quickly. Dear Jim retirement is grand. But already miss things about coaching snowing. The grass before practice watching player scores first TD answering every question with a complete lie..

"Las Vegas. All right. Welcome back to the Vegas. Take. Thanks for joining us sharpen Shapiro. Brought to you by the way, your final reminder tomorrow. We will have Mr. Mike Babcock from TMZ sports joining us also mister Johnny cash's from the review journal, what is going on in Vegas this week and you'll be in studio tomorrow as well. We're gonna get to this com. Capra next up because it's just getting better and better LeBron James made some comments we've got the national association of police organizations, not happy with Colin Kaepernick. We'll get to that coming up here in a few minutes. But joining us right now on the line. He is the owner of sports handle he knows what goes on not just in Las Vegas when it comes to sports gambling. But throughout the country that is Brett smiley bread. I appreciate coming on. How are you? What you guys I'm doing? Well, yourself doing great doing great and pretty excited because we got the NFL kicking off of course, regular season tomorrow. And I was talking to JD a little bit off the air. And he said, Brian, you're not gonna believe the action. Some of these some of these books are taking can you can you give us a kind of an estimate of what is gone on? And are you surprised at the numbers with some of these new sports books some of the action that they're taking not just college football? But in the NFL. Yeah. And we really haven't even gone a true sensitive with just just a preseason and different states are. At different levels, for example, just this past week West Virginia at one of its five casinos begin taking wagers Mississippi. But a month. Now, I don't mean to hedge not answer. Shorter answer is it's it's it's been pretty substantial number so far. And I think it's only going to increase substantially. I think the most telling number will be. You know, the first month in the first month of football New Jersey September which we won't learn for another few weeks New Jersey in the month of August off the top of my head. I think the total handle was about. Forty point six million. And that was just with only about four casinos in read in retail. Wow. And nothing online, right? Yeah. At that time, it was it was purely retail Simpson today on on football eve, which should be a holiday. I agree. Yeah. Now about five sports have gone digital of them, Android only. But it's happening, and you know, slowly. But surely, we're gonna find out how big this market is a bread JD here. Read an article today that estimated that New Jersey would take over Vegas by two thousand twenty one as a sports betting market. What are your thoughts on that? I think it's it's audible, I think if if I were betting we're talking Betty, and I I would bet on it just because the, you know, the population here how closely situated to New York and New Jersey and New Jersey and her New York, and Pennsylvania, but we'll see what happened in those two states. But you know, the average household income hears about seventy two thousand it's pretty darn high nationwide. And. It's just a a very serious appetite that that wouldn't shock me Nevada's five hundred five hundred. I'm sorry. How five billion a year? I maybe takes two three years until you know, more mobile. Available. But I think it could get there for sure. Wow. That's crazy. You know what I think it is Chris Christie. He's just going easiest gonna continue going to the books and those nails money breath. I think that's what's happening in New Jersey. Yeah. Go ahead JT. And then a Mississippi. Which apparently Mississippi Alabama have the most illegal illegal action per capita in the country, which does not shock me. I was in the south this last weekend. And it's it's just unbelievable how how aggressively loyal these fans are down there. They all have their their polo shirts on with like, Tennessee or Florida or Bama or whatever it is Mississippi just in person did about five hundred twenty four bits per hour on Saturday for college football. Yeah. That doesn't surprise me. I know there. I don't know to what extent that they're taking advantage of that out loyalty. From what I read it. He ESPN article by David Purdham, the the house kept about twenty two percent. So I don't I mean, I don't know. But the novelty of it people just wanting to be there. I don't know if they're saving their tickets or whatever. But at some point, well, there's gotta be somebody or some groups taking advantage of that. So Brett when when you go to some of these books in Mississippi, obviously, I have not do they have like sports betting apps on their phone. Can you actually do that in Mississippi? Do they have in game? Wagering heavy heavy established those yet. Well, I haven't been to the I haven't visited the ones in in Mississippi yet. But the way the way it's set up right now is the sports are permitted to to have mobile wagering. But only on premises which really is kind of defeats the purpose, though, doesn't it? Yeah. It's it's silly. So because of that right now, they're just prioritizing getting retail operations off without a hitch. And I think about half of the have their largely concentrated in the lucky and and tunica not far from Memphis input. Waging some of them have integrated degraded. But again, this isn't it it's retail. So maybe those options are more limited. But I think in Mississippi and some other states are just wanting to focusing on getting the operation behind the counter. Right. And then we'll be branching out further. Brad. So all encompassing question. You're we'll say an amateur market where we've got thirty or forty states with legalized sports betting, assuming that Chuck Schumer gets his hands and everything like he wants to like you tried to last week. Is this a trillion dollar a year market nationally? Well, the. I think so you don't have five six years. Not surprised naming the estimates. Have been all over the place de AGA estimates there's about one hundred fifty billion dollars wagered illegally every year. I've seen another estimate that was in national study four hundred billion nobody really knows because all the legal operators and offshore other jurisdictions aren't reporting, but anywhere we're seeing the appetite. Now, I think fantasy football only helps now there's going to be you know, FOX is doing a show and Sports Illustrated has their own vertical. So I think it's a stigma go Dan goes down and handle is going to go up. So I think you'd probably about even money in about five six years that it will be a trillion. You know, I have to mention this. Because Brett you just talked about fantasy football. And I'm watching the US open the other day, and this guy who's not even top two hundred in the world millman beats Roger Federer. I think he was like a twelve to one long shot to beat Roger Federer and then right after right after he wins the match he's doing a post game interview. And he says, yeah, I wanna get to bed because I have to wake up. At seven o'clock in the morning because I have a fantasy football draft. Did you ever think ten or fifteen years ago that you would get to a point where professional athlete right after one of the biggest upsets in tennis history would talk about gambling, and he has to wake up in eight hours to gamble. I mean, it's crazy, isn't it? Yeah. It's really it's really penetrated mainstream. I mean, nobody blinks at fantasy your March madness anymore. And I think as as each state as new Bill that's kind of a road. Then maybe our kids will will. Will realize that we all grew up in a time when it was legal Elliott's outside of Nevada. So back to Chuck Schumer. He's talking about creating a federal regulated framework. Do you agree with that? Or not. No, I think it's the the attempt at at blocking at the state level was not only ineffectual but unconstitutional, and at this point there's already Nevada has been doing fine without any federal intervention. An excise tax. And now six other states have passed laws and probably next year a dozen more. And I think it should be the each up to their own determination, how they want to spend on how they want to have their Jamie commissions, responsible. I mean, they're all established conditions in each state. And they have those relationships. I don't think we need a one-size-fits-all with congressman who have no idea what they're talking about. And not really willing to do the research stepping into this spray. Right. Each state's definitely different. You know, what I think that a state like California or a state like Texas could legitimately do two hundred billion dollars a year. Do you agree with that? California fifty five million people. That wouldn't shock me. I mean, really, no, none of these numbers, which I mean, that's gonna be when California eventually turns. Maybe that's not till twenty one to twenty two. I mean that could go crazy. It's just gonna be interesting to see at that point. What type of what is evolved and the other states, and and how they're just going to handle. Is here with all the. Poker rooms and a lot of the tribal interests racetracks to decide their. Yeah. Well, Brett last question for you. Tell us a little bit about sports for people that are unaware that. Maybe haven't checked it out. Give us a rundown on what sports handles all about. Yes. Yeah. It's worth handle dot com. Twitter at sports underscore handle portal for all things. Sports betting. You know, we've kind of covered the gamut here from industry to. To legislative. I'm the big NFL better. There'll be some content. We have a couple of podcasts. Check out the website tomorrow, you'll you'll see those kind of your one stop shop portal for information little bit handicapping a lot of legislation some other perspectives and resources to helping mixer smarter bats well Brett since you are an NFL guide question. You can you give us any free picks for the game tomorrow or what? Tomorrow. I I'd say. You know, I liked Atlanta when they were still getting three from what I've seen that's down to about one. Yeah. So if you're a falcons, backer went to force it, but I don't know if you're leading eagles. I mean that was probably the time to buy. I don't know if it gets to pick him, but. Yeah. I think it'd be falcons at three or pass at this point. Yeah. All right. My man. Brent? I appreciate you coming on as always we'll have you on again, hopefully soon, thanks so much. Good luck. With your bats. There you go Brett smiley with sports handle the CEO of sports handle. And formerly of Fox Sports as well. He knows what's going on. When you ask him that question. Do you think it can be two billion dollar business in California? You said, yeah. I don't see why not two hundred billion that the two hundred to two hundred. I'm sorry. Two hundred spoke there. Yeah. I mean, that's just and he's right. He he says one that wouldn't surprise me five million people got it just I don't think people truly grasp or understand how big this is already. Nobody gets it. Eventually you'll be able to go to an airport and make wagers. On the team for the city that you're traveling to at those airports kiosks at trucker stops and gas stations and malls hotels. It's going to be just totally out of control. Not good for degenerate like myself, not not good. It's going to be like where can I buy a water? That's what it's gonna be like, oh, there's a gas station right there. Oh, let's place about where can I buy a water? There's gonna be a gaming dispensaries where you can place bets. Kiosks everywhere. It's like I said it's gonna be like where can I buy a water or where can I find a drinking fountain that that's what sports betting is going to be like throughout the country and five years. I have no doubt in. I like how he how he referred to wolf. It's at one it might be a good by kind of like its stock. He was talking about like it was a stock which is great like the wage refund. Exact well, if you haven't already heard JD, Colin kaepernick's, kind of been in the news recently for the last year and a half and for the last few weeks. It's kind of never heard of the garden. It's kind of been brought up. Again, he was his quarterback for Nevada Reno he wants some games there. And then he he made it to a Super Bowl, and then his career just just plummeted to the you know, where but Nike is now doubling down. I guess you could say this capital campaign. They just released a brand new. I don't know if you saw it. It's a brand new two minute commercial.

"Play for his childhood team a dream of his entire life to be a leaf it's that simple i think all this other rhetoric is just fluff there's been to many people talking including him he needs to just admit it he wanted to be a leaf since he was a little boy and he went and did it there you go congratulations i don't think there's any ownership nothing that the owners of the islanders were willing to throw the entire kitchen sink at the guy if the money wasn't an issue years everything they did everything they could to keep the guy in new york he wanted to play he wanted to play for the leaves yeah i don't agree with you on that you don't know anything i'm starting now convinced that you're a rambling idiot and you've never said one thing to me yet that's made a point that i'm willing to accept valid you haven't said one thing to me to make me convince you know what you're talking about i've waited for four minutes and you've still haven't you keep telling me how wrong i am about everything except the problem is i'm right about everything and you're not that's what the problem is mafia you have no salt in this dinner who's right who's wrong between that guy and whatever he was saying to me and what i was saying you are because like you said they did everything they could he just chose his hometown team that he dreamt about playing about since he was a kid i mean it wasn't the money wasn't ownership like oh we don't see them you'll see any angel owner what do you really know if you're not in that markets i think shanahan's doing a good job i think lewis part of that and i think they know that he was doing a good job and he came to take over the islanders this had nothing to do with mike babcock or berry trots this had to do with the giants various wanted to play for the leafs that's it right even if they had fired snow year ago brought in lieu their points somehow and he changed team up that doesn't mean they could add a team that was on the verge of contending as well and you might have no one wants to hear this either but let's face it carbohydrate wanna hear it either but he went from one loser to another they've been a loser for ever and solve the leafs so he went from one bad team to the next i'm not telling you that there are winter they've been a loser for twenty five years okay so i'm saying that kid he did there like this guy's trying to make it out like my rhonda the islanders dysfunction or they're not a good argument what everybody in toronto david saying this stuff about them for the last year and a hand look in the mirror is birthright to go back look in the mirror all you have to do is look at your own crappy organization that's been losing for fifty one years straight here's what the people in toronto we're never going to get and i understand that they're never gonna the emotional attachment that the fans of this team had to this player you will never understand they were terrible forever they took him first overall he was here for nine years it's the best player that the teams had in a long time and now they didn't want to lose and now he's gone to his hometown team and two minutes after he left he put a picture on twitter of him and a maple leaf comfortable go but the only way they can understand is this year's austin matthews leads to go sign with ariza which is probably what he'll do bob steam in toronto you're on cbs sports radio you're the man for well haber huzzah going great hiding out in canada gouging the irs and the tax man i believe that made by your friend listen you're right on the trying to leave their complete garbage and there was no chance traverses going back to the islanders because at the end of this year refused the trade because his contract expires this year in his agent all of a sudden luke come in there and started and you gotta get tourists and california with that big agents back to toronto shot two hundred members of his family his family the church to getting married in the fifty guys they got waiting behind the leafs these guys are deep team is you couldn't refuse it you're right.

"And replicate that and if you do i take one of my paychecks and split it and give you guys half each if not you do a month of washing my car and speed up the other thing if your other two are gonna go whoa whoa whoa whoa where's our half of one of your paycheck listen they can go out and earn it do do we really think we're really thinking my daughter sydney is hurting in that you know yeah by the way stuff that replicate word yeah whatever out no chance and then there's the curious case of very trots can we get tom wilson onto way on the holy smoke eight make sure he finally made it to toronto and then see where he feels about what's going on with berry trots the capitals head coach tendered his resignation from the team becoming a free agent after leading the franchise to its first ever stanley cup on june seven okay so let let let's set is easy as i can hear you signed a deal in two thousand fourteen did trot and as part of that deal if he won a stanley cup a two year extension would kick in bumping his salary by three hundred thousand dollars now he signed that in two thousand fourteen during that time it was a couple of coaches joel quenneville and mike babcock signed big deals monster deals in that time so trots wins the stanley cup kicks in the two year extension but he goes for more he wants a fiveyear extension for more money and as the gm for washington said his representative wants to take advantage of berries experiencing stanley cup win yes and was trying to negotiate a deal that compensates him as one of the better coaches in the league top four or five coaches and basically they couldn't agree on this five years trots wanted and more money but mace basically it was the five years so trots resigned the islanders the only job available so he's probably either either get that or he's going to sit for a year before he comes to coach again but that's basically it wins the stanley cup this has happened before and then leaves the next year i think it's what happened what did you say this morning five times in the last forty five times in the last forty years but usually it's been for guys on the back end of the guys who are retiring because of a late scotty bowman by the way retired after two thousand two because he'd done everything you possibly could the last time an active coach just resigned and then went onto coach again happened in nineteen ninety four when mike keane led the rangers to their first stanley cup since one thousand nine hundred forty and then he said the rangers breached the contract well this is really fascinating because i was in saint louis and ninety four and soon as this happened the blues for office went all in on getting my cane and mike keenan did eventually come to the saint louis blues became the coach there for a few years but the way keenan sort of got out of a contract the rangers were one day late on a on a bonus payment one day one day late so they were one day late and mike keenan held a press conference that says the rangers have breached the contract i have accepted that breach and now i am a free agent it was unbelievable and then the rangers held this press conference saying these are all the things we did for my keenan that we didn't have to do we got him these tickets to a broadway show this kind of stuff but you technically keenan was right technically was right but it looked like a bush league move it was significant i like the idea of accepting a breach zapped your breach tonight except the clippers not as accepting of houston's breach earlier this yeah doc clippers so it's interesting i mean i bury so either you think that berry trots is all in on coaching the islanders which would seem a little strange 'cause they've really struggled and the cats are the best record the last four years when he's been there or does it look more like like he's willing to sit the first and foremost it's one of those hey wait a minute okay i know i signed that the two year extension kicks in not a lot more money in these guys you sign money i don't blame them.

"Yeah they've been waiting since nineteen seventy four you heard it it wasn't a dream but then comes a bit of a nightmare scenario for the coaching situation a week and a half after hoisting the cup buried trots resigns as coach of the capital's the fifty five year old went into the season without any certainty about his future when the franchise last summer opted not to give him a contract extension espn's greg wishing game where we all knew that berry trots didn't have a contract for next season what we didn't know is that his current contract had a clause that if the capitals won the stanley cup there was a two year extension that kicked in problem being is he signed that contract back in two thousand fourteen that's that's before mike babcock made a bunch of money with the leaves before joel quenneville with the blackhawks italy paid him three hundred thousand dollars more than his current salary so trot sat down with gm brooklyn to get a new deal he wanted about five years mclellan just before and the capital's wanna meet that price so berry trots resigns after bringing up to washington so he can't get the deal he wants in dc what's next for him maybe in terms of the landscape of other teams out there well there is one team that needs a coach and it's the new york islanders who no doubt would like to change the conversation in the trajectory of their team by signing a recent stanley cup winning coach obviously trots knows what his price tag is if the seek to meet it maybe that's a that's an option for the capitals they might have the heirapparent right on staff and todd reardon a coach and associate coach of trots is who they didn't allow to interview and other places he is clearly the guy they're going to be looking at to replace their coach probably for a bit of a cheaper rate than what would they would have had to pay berry in a statement the capitals thanking berry transfer his efforts the past four years saying it's grateful for his leadership and what he's done for the franchise bringing them a stanley cup capitals went to the playoffs in all four years under berry droughts including a pair of presidents trophy winning seasons in two thousand fifteen and sixteen and twenty sixteen seventeen and of course the cup speaking of sports with sticks quite a bit of talk as we all went back to the office on monday on the heels of the us open this past weekend phil mickelson the course it self and oh yeah another win for brooks kapka the guys the pti you separate them i mean kepco was great tony particularly the you and i talked in real time about this the bogeysaving i think it was on eleven and the yes that was like simulated dustin to when speed got the bogey at the british open.

"In in the big picture in the face of everything that happened in toronto i'm glad i'm not sure there should have been could have been any other outcome and of course i love game sevens but that doesn't even matter with so many people hurting in toronto right now i'm really hoping that this hockey team is giving them a bit of joy in the midst of this tragedy on monday and afterwards as much as you want to hear what they say about game seven at about the excitement and what what else is there that's better than a winner take all affair winner take all battle in a playoff series especially when you're talking about two teams that have an established rivalry in her party the original six but for me i wanted to hear what they had to say about what had happened earlier and how that affected the team overall and and coach mike babcock took a couple of seconds to address that thoughts and prayers or with the families of the people that lost their lives today and all the people that are injured senseless deaths the say the least changes the new normal a family's life forever for there'd be no mom no dad no brother no sister or whatever it may be you obviously we're fortunate to live in such a fantastic city with great first responders and the work they've done but it's so important that we rally around these people help out and do everything we can we got a fantastic city we can't let this get in the way of what we've got going dragic to say the least i appreciate what mike babcock has to say about a new normal it constantly changes in in our world in two thousand eighteen i'm not sure that there's any such thing as a normal but whatever these families felt like was normal for them changed drastically on monday and if there is a city that can understand it certainly is boston and i'm speaking specifically about understanding hockey in this particular context that's so similar because it was five years ago when the bruins and leafs were engaged in the first round of the stanley cup postseason two weeks after.
