"Hello movie truth is welcome to this week's episode of truth in movies. I'm mike alita. I'm david jenkins strong. And today we'll be talking about soprano bailey. Bones video nasty era horror sensor and nick cage tracking down a trouble hunter in pig also from alex. Proof that working on pig with nick cage and didn't film club for going back to one of the original video nasties nineteen eighty one possession. Opening up on truth. Envy these little white lies. Podcast david hannah. Welcome back to truth in movies. Always a pleasure david. What's the latest at little white lies towers so any closer to hearing about that new issue. We're so close. We're so so close but not quite yet we have to. We keep keeping it in the oven just for that little extra five minutes to make sure it's done on the inside and the knife coming out clean so yeah but yeah it's been it's been a fun one to do really big one on ninetieth issue matt massive effort from from a lot of people involved in this one and Yeah it's a bit like the cover film. It's a bit of an epic. So yeah conway people and and hopefully people will be excited by it. It's a good one. I think it's almost like one of those feel old memes. Were i remember the fiftieth issue. Gosh it's yeah let comes at you fast but thank you for kicking off the speculation though with a hint about what the coverage she may be hannah. What's going on in your world. Any big news view you just to just a small a announcement made last week. Yes i finally after weeks. We say weeks after months of saying. I'm writing a book. I been able to announced what the book is about So it's the latest let law is x. Abrams new york today. How how you would anyway. I'll collaboration with the publisher and is a monograph on severe coppola called severe coppola forever young which i'm going to have to get used to saying even though it just makes me want to sink the The iconic disk disk kind of now is kind of new new romantic thing isn't it. Does it actually featuring. That's that's a good thing because the vibe does yeah definitely does is funny because a we chose that title at after kind of convince myself. It wasn't one of her films stephanie. Nor very exciting. That is out in may next year. And i'm sure we'll talk by lots more on the podcast in feature very exciting news. I can't wait to hear more seymour and read it when it finally comes out heinemann exciting news but got to bumper episode this week. Senior releases of philip lipids always but especial interview as well. So we should kick things off with our first new release of the week with sensor of plot synopsis to censor up top britain. Nine thousand nine hundred five. When film censor unit played by nieve alba discovers an eerie horror that speaks directly to assist is mysterious disappearance. She resolves to unravel the puzzle behind the film and its enigmatic director quest. Will blur the lines between fiction and reality in terrifying ways so david to you. First on this review. This is been position as a as a riff on the video. Nasty era 'cause it set in nine hundred ninety five at the time where horror films being scrutinized and and banned or heavily cuts. That's what the central characters about. What sort of riff is this. It's not like it's making a goal of filled eighties horror or is it. Well that's an interesting one it some. I think that that that question is probably. What makes this film so interesting for me. Because it's sort of eludes easy categorization and i think because it is set in this world of the video nasty and it's it's a kind of very vivid smoke-filled fungi kind of nine thousand nine hundred eighteen not to kind of like you know without putting to find a point on it very very subtle evocation of one thousand nine hundred. He's and yet exist in this world of video nasties and this the video recordings act in which a lot of horror films were banned for that for for being kind of like morally outrageous and and and contributing to kind of hysteria violence and copycat crimes. And you know none of which were ever proven all or given any credence to so it was. It was a real kind of like you know. One of the big kind of like blemishes on on on our cultural history. I think and the film focuses on this character. Enid who is who is a senator. Who does this job of watching films in this disconnected objective way and applying to them the the rigors of censorship and cutting and taking bits out and making them palatable for for people and i guess like i initially suggests that is about the kind of toil of that job and the psychological toil of seeing these kinds of graphic images as as the last bastion of or kind of you know the the of sitting between that the you know the last guard between the public and and these films so and yet but but then it kind of an so. You're in this world and you kind of think. Oh it's gotta be a horror film because it's about horror films and you're seeing these kind of remade clips of these video nasties and really sauce grungy exploitation films and but but it turns out to be something a bit different really and it's it's more it almost feels like a melodrama. I don't really want to say any more without giving giving away. But it's kind of like a historical melodrama. That's more about kind of character being triggered by met mutt by memories and and often searching for for for some kind of elusive truth in her own life. And it's really kind of it kind of wrongfoot shoe in a really interesting and pleasing way. I think yeah i. I'm hesitant boxes in because this is a new rising filmmaker. But i think it's allocation of the era a adjacency to the horror genre similar to something like pizza stricklin films like a barrier and sound studio. He doesn't create a jello film. Enough in the film is seeped with Love of the genre. As i said this is pronto primarily bones debut. She's been around for few years making some great shots on the horror circuit here in the uk. But it's always interesting to get a new perspective on the horon re particularly. Ats as well. What do you make of sensor. Yeah i was lucky enough to watch it at sundance back in january the off virtual edition which was half say incredibly well organized of all the virtual festivals like donald stephanie. Been the kind of the highlight. They ready smashed it in terms of organization and programming. And i was really excited for it being a fan of the the video nasties sub-genre dot general. I find that general Era so interesting. The whole kind of at mary whitehouse ban this filth era..

Honestly it's hot sex shoulders warm hugs. He knows what you're gonna get the generation q. Is now streaming only on showtime. Hello movie treatise. Welcome to this week's episode of truth and movies. I mike alita. I'm adam woodward and i'm lou toss today's show ryan reynolds is an n. P. c. becomes the mvp and free guy this power corruption and lies in michelle franco's new order and in film clip. We're going back to ryan reynolds college days in van wilder policy liaison. Oh coming up on truth in movies. A little white lies podcast. Yes welcome back listeners. Welcome back adam. Welcome back lou lou. I must ask the question you ever been referred to as a party liaison policy animal. Par warrior pie lunatic. But never quite party is on very good actually. I've just remembered something like years ago for some reason because i was always quite good. Maybe not power as on introducing people and bringing people together. A friend of one friend of mine once described me as lot the of south london. I mean. i'm not sure. I've rather any not won't be in collaboration him a lot. Try fantastic. We're happy to be the ryan reynolds. Little white lies family. I'm sure adam. How if you any good highlights unless few weeks cinema for you know not too bad thanks. I have seen a few things which i can't really talk about. One of them being the next next. Lula's cover film which is coming out at the end of this year. Which i'm very very excited about Not too much to report really. We're about to go to print print on the next issue which this goes out would have kind of started that process and that big that big button but yeah no otherwise. we'll good. Do you have a shelf date for that next issue or when we should expect. I should know that keeps changing. It's going to be sort of third week of august so yeah kind of end of next week. Going into the following week very exciting. Can't wait to hear more but first we have this week's new releases to tackle and up. I it's free guy. So let's start with the official line on free guy. Ryan reynolds played a humble bank teller. Who discovers he is actually a background character in an open world video game and decides to become the hero of his own story. One he rewrites himself now in a world where there are no limits. He is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way before. It's too late so lou. That was the line about free guy. The trailer seemed like it was all within the video game world actually in reality. It's sort of inside outside. Video games film right right so so this is it You you rub shoulders being of game game blah blah blah but edged fairly early on failure early on we get into the to the thing where it's like a ready play among thing. I mean that's the let's face it. That's the most obvious. Recent touched on women talking about films really incorporated gaming in a serious fashion and obviously spielberg ready. One bringing and blah blah blah. But some but this does in in a saudi saudi different way ron reynolds is introduced to fact that he's actually in the game by a sunglasses which he picks an odd character and any big signs of conduct john carpenter and certainly satirical whites films will immediately think of that is a reference to they live for those of you sandwiches hopefully Alavi they leave. is pretty in. It sats wear pulling the sunglasses and suddenly you see the world as it really is that why not but anyway of tangent for second when you're watching free guy you already like the fact that it does go on this kind of truman shaw discovery. This this man riyaz actually hold off has been a lie That that for me was really good. It doesn't quite pushed the sat soy in a really serious issue dumb philosophies and he he yeah he does have these moments of introspection and that's kind of condemnation but really about the food on entertainment of him navigating this crazy world and then he gets involved with johnny coma and jodi comber ease the kind of token love interest. She is really cool. Sexy character in the gang up. Molotov gal Offering show i he said native whereas the real player She she's frightened by froze. You'd expect ryan reynolds. What does this kind of regular thing. He actually pricey caught straight known. He's npc an on my heart Very very straight lice. Very clean cut and so on. I think personally when he's gone a little bit crazy. Maybe knows full on so of deprived poll. But when he's a little bit rough around the edges and a stopover more ever eaten through like gal gabby noyer but yeah it really must marketing. This film is is very much. You know truman show plus ready player. One plus the matrix Of century works give away. I've been thinking easy actually anymore. The niece does the ebony moore substance the trophies is. He's in a more relaxed about it. Starts from the sube big action scenes and all that stuff that they jimenez might in it is his body and this is kind of interesting. He bodies code by the and he's cool guy so he's that mentioned it of reviews but like is that kind of running you know a big like him repo man. Everybody's named off through bob or wherever you feel like the characters body and guy. He's the kinda lou jug. The filmmakers making either took two awesome. We themselves you know..

And what's the website for that It's called animus magazine dot com. So later on we're talking about resident evil retribution with video game spin i must ask. This is another question. Animus of course is in the assassin's creed games and the film of the games influence there. I mean i have actually seen the assassin's creed film. I have not played the games. Everyone to actually But no it doesn't come from that is also the that is something in doctor who in well i was informed just comes from the latin word animals which i guess he's also way comes from for doctor who is screen but i mean if people can relate to it in that way to. It's not a problem you know if they come across it thinking it's it's like assassins creed fandom but then find a lot of awesome film criticism. That's not that's no bad thing really exactly. I like to think this probably you know event diagram of people who liked both.

"I so fascinating. This film was internationally huge house hits. You know, it's all these festivals at the Oscars the baptism Soham. But as a very exhausted sized view from French filmmaker going and progressing stories. What we think about that? Can we excuse to pots the power of the film? I think you always kind of enter into that mindset whose view is this who who's is that we seeing these stories through and it is kinda strange French director would make this. Film if I hadn't known I've maybe wouldn't have predicted it because it does set any fail. There's a kind of organic element to I think, it's it's strange. I mean like the same time. It's like, I guess the reverse argument. It's like should be resent the story being told because it is not focusing on poverty and shame and degradation. And maybe the the realities that when not seeing in the film, but yeah, I mean, I don't know. I don't have a definitive answer on that. I wonder if anyone does Kelly would you be recommending this? I would recommend it. I mean, I like this is definitely been on my to watch list for some time. And I was I was pleasantly surprised because I didn't know who directed it. And I just had a feeling that, you know, I wouldn't I wouldn't be unfortunate. I think I actually started out feeling like, oh, I'm quite uncomfortable with this because historically how black communities poor communities have been portrayed in does not always give them the humanity. Our dignity that they deserve. But. I I don't know. I also don't have a definitive answer on this. I just know that I had like it was such sort of immersive experience. I really felt like sort of swept up in it. And I don't think it is all joy, I do think so much of their happiness, and and exuberance is a way of sort of hiding from the daily realities of their lives, and I appreciate how they're framed so often like there's so like beautifully lit. I never felt like I was washing them be like sort of stifled or or or made to be exploited in any sort of way. So I recommend it. I think it's like I would say it's a joyous thm. Maybe read up on the myth of or your before you watch the spell, but it's so interesting. So maybe we don't have a definitive answer to that question. But. Very one just dimension one element of the end. Which is kind of interesting is like. Kind of jarring. This is death scene. Which is. Yeah. Tragedy. Facing you to see. But yet just saying this one place where you can find a Finnish Vance's, and that's on social media. So let's go wash this film, and you wanna solve this question for us. "Well, coming up in truth and movies. A little white lies podcast. It's Mike alita here. In the hosts chairs across from a pair of top tier? Lies contributors bring touch of French class to our discussion class. No doubt is Manuela LeSage, Manuela, and are very unbeatable boy county councils, welcome back him. Nice to be. We'll be talking about new releases very shortly. But first if it's a follow from last week. Now have are the ones who are party B palooza film clip pick last week. I saw it years ago. I think I'm not even show with living in the UK the remember being really baffled because like what is this culture? What are these people who is this, man? The time. The me on rewatch. It was amazing. I watch both both Simone and David last week. It was quite positively received. But we have an Email from Stuart Jones hair DOT and your discussion twenty five people in the last pod reminded me of the time. I saw it and the unusual thing that's occurred. It was a preview screening Manchester pizza hook himself with an attendance. And sat a few rows behind me during the early on in the film producer mountain hamlets his show and swear elaborating joy division for the early. Ramshackle performance of she's lost control. Hook Sheraton outs. That didn't happen in the subsequent scene. Whether to show playing on properly, he said more chiefly last more like it's as this is the only time something like this happens to be my as cinema going. I thought I'd ask the pot. Have you ever attended a screening of a biographical film in the presence of one of his subjects and did they Hackel? It. This sounds quite a question. I don't think I ever have I have. But it was for another Michael the film, he did about wolf Alice. So I was working at the BFI at the time as an usher. And I just kind of sat in on the screen, and I was like, oh, this sounds weird. And all of we'll Vallis and the crew were in attendance. But I don't know that they so much heckled as they cheered every second of the movie because if you know about the film as a fictional storyline. Kind of grafted onto this toll documentary where it's like to act as a playing like a manager in a row D full in love so sexy and everyone just lost them. That was about eight. I don't think there's any real heckling maybe a pot from like members of the band yelling about dissing each other. But it was friendly like. Michael wins has form. Stressful like, if I can avoid seeing the real people, I think it would because all like bio pics general is such an interesting complicated affair. Must be interesting. I've heard stories of you know, screenings of some films or like the countries, especially where the real people turn out to be there. Like, they were not expected and turns really bizarre because they don't like the film things like that. So that's so special. Yeah. That sounds like a good one to I don't think I haven't examples of that. But if listeners if you do let us know by the usual channels outs truth movies on Twitter truth movies at TCL dot com. "This week on truth and movies. It's another fine mess hardy in the affectionate comedy tributes down Ali I've never getting married again. And just going to find the woman, I don't like firehouse here nightly stars in the human bio bio-pic collapse. I believe when he based quoting impart on school days. Hospitals that kissing hold Archimedes on his own in the buff coming up and truth and movies, white lies podcast. Yes. Mike alita here in the host chair says in cross from David Jenkins. White lies. David and welcome back Simone, Hans film critic for the observer good morning. Well, we recording this in the morning of the BAFTA nominations being announced an annual early morning for the prestige film industry, even early morning with the American film industry. Do we have any big snubs big reactions to the bathroom? No so far. Well, the best film list is is quite weird. I'm thanking it's the favorite Greenberg. Black klansman stars. Rogue owners stars stars born which it seems odd missing from that thing. Not what's missing what shouldn't be. There is correct question. Why why is green book there? And what does it mean for the us IRS seems to be coming? The you know, one of the favorites in this conversation this year after Golden Globes over the weekend. Yeah. I suppose they, but I'm reminded of a tweet the friend of the poet Charline tweeted about this. And I still think it's funny. I only have one thing to say about the Oscars, and it's actually about the buffed does or caps. If a British film wins best film than by definition. It should also win best British foam. Exactly. So that way. No. But I guess the big snub is is Lynne Ramsay for you never really here, which is nominated for best bridge foam. But. I'm really sad that one of my favorite films have lost year. Leave no trace isn't on on in the mix scene for the film. Can you? Forgive me as well. It's got lots of notes for acting for Melissa McCarthy, enriched grant deserve it. I think, but I think Mario hell is direction is gray. And she's just not been in the conversation as much she should have been adapted screenplay as well as usual the performance categories screenplay. Kathy's seems to have some more interesting nominations. If street could talk about his screenplay nominated. They Regina king has been snubbed from supporting actress. We'll get onto today. But there's lots of people still love impersonations a as opposed to actually building a character from from scratch, but scratch made as they say in the food industry. I believe they certainly doing America. Yes. As you. I'm not even follow that one through. Willful through is this impersonations bit. Because pubescent film of a best actor stemming only including Steve Coogan playing STAN laurel of a what do you think of that? We'll see momentarily won't we any final comes in the Baptist. It's great since the spite of us is the best animated film and shoplifters is a pa- best foreign language film that might pigs. I'd probably say that Romer I'm big fan pleased to see that kind of dotted around everywhere. I will still be standing star is born and crossing my fingers fit. All if those people are standing for by me rep city. No, I'm not. And I'm actually, you know, not very happy about it being nominated for best British foam with Bryan singer listed in the brackets next to the nomination. It's not really a very good. Look notes. Notes, but let's chrome with what seems to be with Steve Coogan special festive. We have first new release the week. Just stan. Ali..

Oh, coming up, truth and movies. A little white lies podcast. Happy new year. Everyone is twenty nineteen of the year in which the likes of a carer blade runner in the running man were sets. Let's hope that bodes well for the quality of this year's films rather than the social political climate is Mike alita hair in the host share sitting across from her mood and Hannah would welcome back gang. How will your Christmas new brakes, very restorative? What some good TV's and good films and any standouts Hannah. The thing I really watched. That was new the marabout does not I guess watches a funny. These kind of a relative to that because he kind of play. It's I relate to that. It's been kind of like a mixed response. I think is an experiment. It really word to thought field. White herd will really good the out if you haven't already Christmas new year break when all of the lists have come out. So you can scour them fill in some gaps. I watched upgrade Lee one L robo code. Really fun. I watched searching and Columbus John show. Double bill. And then some nineteen Ninety-three the punishment. This was on a lot of end of year lists. But I think with under represented across the board. I watched avengers Infinity war that small film. Indie film, which I'd been putting off. And I think I will not be seeing Benjes and. Captain marvel be back for that. I like rehearse, and so I will watch that this Black Panther the Spiderman reboot they did good. I quite like the standard in films with watched point of us. I haven't seen by that. I mean, we gave really really every year is supposed to be grazed. I still my to watch list. But yeah, my favorite thing. I saw Christmas was the documentary on I player at the moment. So to any process out there listening is just absolutely hilarious from start to finish is like spinal tap meets the office or something about Partridge in. It's so funny. I was into watching it still in my players hit. So check it out bras after the screaming stops cold says, you're funny titles. Yeah. Choice quite turning cheek. But that's twenty eighteen let's forget about that. Let's look forwards twenty nine teen. But before we do we have a piece of correspondence from Callum Smith questioning one of my favorite movies of last year that wrong trae highly allies talk, ten ditch movies issue, isn't so much of the quality of Roma as a movie, but more with the place. It comes from that. It's a movie made by a wealthy man about his servants. However, fantastic Rome is anyone that's within ten feet of film festival knows that wealthy filmmaker makes class deal film about emotionally complicated relationship with childhood servants is practically genre unto itself. The logic goes and questioned this goes against the actual document experiences of modern servants, which are pretty simple. They hate the people. They work for an treated like garbage and not against Roma being made or people. Enjoying can't help thinking how much more exciting. It'll be when someone who's actually been a serve and gets to movie about that. Pompous boss is worth noting that every high profile filmmaker who can raise a budget director movie about disadvantage person could realistically raise at least quarter. Same funding Saprissa movie by disadvantage person. Wow. Calendar a case against Roma. There be made it all any comments gangs. We move on it interesting point about, you know, would be interesting to see a film like rumor being actually made from someone who was. Sirven? But I would just refer people to the interview I did with our funds quantity..
