"They should not be anywhere close to bottom the table. So i'll just keep me talk to larry. I disagree to me. I'm looking at anybody about their leads. Leads up pretender modeling table walls. Who'll in southampton i. I don't love them coming off the draw against city. That's not nothing. it's not nothing. An plus like i think if they play newcastle norwich sentencing for colds. So i got i. I don't wanna put newcastle neighborhood. That long you know cal. Wilson of accident love mike. Love certain like just the the the aura surrounding newcastle as it has been for for several years now just feels negative tax. They have players. You mentioned gal rosen. And they've got the same maxime is one of the most fun guys in the league. Watch i love. That guy really used. He'll stick around bills around. Miguel marrone i mean they got. They got a lot of players that are that are worth watching ages you know. Obviously the fan base hates the the owner The owner probably hates the fan base. The everybody seems to hate. Steve bruce for whatever reason like he's just not sexy enough or whatever it just it's just not a good situation but i don't know how they fix it other than igwe ashley gets the hell out of there harder manager do the takeover you would do it there l. a. short that though short bad i don't know i don't know how apple's you're right. It's basically they're holding battery says for their holding pattern until the takeover happens whoever the takeover you know whoever it may be feels like they're sort of on hold until then in hoping to stick around the the premiership until they don't do that okay quickly before we can preview update s. p. l. "Last year which was definitive. Step forward from the year before it's slow steady. It's maybe not as spectacular as you're hoping but i you know until things changed with type of i think talent that philly can either produce or bring in <hes> i don't. I don't think they're going to like there's no carlos davila on the team except for the fifteen minutes a game that will senior compla- i wrote about philadelphia last week and we get to talk about here. I'm curious to hear your response. My general hypothesis is that atlanta change the league because they brought him three mcgee mccallum our own plus two other d._p.'s and they said if you don't have someone at miguel maroon and or joseph martinez or tito v alba's level. You're done so right now here's a._f._c. If you don't have them with carlos villa your done so if you don't have maximum rallies this basically i would say the six million dollar incoming coming transfer player and then you don't have a chance to really compete long-term. Maybe red bulls at for a year philadelphia but over the long haul you just can't compete and ladera was that guy maybe for the sounders darrelle course obviously joe michael and so the the the hypothesis is that philadelphia and other clubs need to create this churn where they develop l. a. players and they might not have the capital investment right now to sign miguel marrone but you in the beautiful thing about this game is that you can make that capital investment you can turn money over by transferring players out so the long term goal of philadelphia union is they might not plan to have mark mckenzie brennan aaronson anthony fontana awesome trustee to win right now but if they turn those players those three players into a single mccallum our own and then they have the next group of players come through the next mark mckenzie trusty now you have three good homegrown grown players with miguel or brian fernandez or wherever you want to call it so to answer the question for me. It's a successor philadelphia in the long term with the way. M._l._s. is going if if they can somehow turn these three young players into the transfer market easier said than done we will talk more about canadian classic on thursday. We're just running out of time here folks. We have to talk u._s. Preview orlando lose again to atlanta united in heineken rivalry week justin martinez twelve straight games of the goal who else he's doing his thing but the orlando price should have won that game they were the better team doesn't matter that's the kind of record scratching them over and over and over in this particular rivalry landing has an opportunity for their second trophy trophy of the year you see that recovery. They're learning this team because you're gonna coach about <hes> exactly atlanta minnesota tuesday eastern for mercedes benz stadium. We can watch this thing on e._s._p._n. Plus what are we going to say. Does minnesota have a chance. Yes minister chance just plain and simple. If a a depending on the line adrian heath chooses to play you wrote about it. Darling control probably doesn't start more defensive in solid in central midfield and you have have a compact structure and you make atlanta if they don't go in the first twenty minutes and you make atlanta's slowly have to work for it and work for it you have a chance to frustrate them and and i i might be biased because i was there for the semi-final but if mason toy on like that and can score the types of goals he can score and <hes> and score individual moments not needing a ton of build up then you have a chance to the problem is his percentage chance of doing that is much lower than the percentage chance of joseph martinez doing for sure but i'll say this atlanta's gonna play a high line and brag does not come off his line miles robinson's phenomenal at recovering over the top but that's still a margin for error there. What's his game hinge on doyle bobby. What would it be for you. What changes it. Who's the difference maker. What could adrian heath do. What might the board do so one adjustment. The frank de boer made is that he pulled the reins off the conservative passing right one of the reasons. We talked about pre game this weekend. One of the reasons you may conservative passes as you limit transition moments transition. The moments are the sport in two thousand nineteen right if you're good at them or if you're bad at them that can determine he's loosened the reins he's let p._d. Martinez ezekiel barco darlington nagbe and all these guys make more threatening passes says if it doesn't come off we have what we saw against orlando where they just got destroyed in every single phase because orlando is organizing their counter pressing. They won the ball back in every single time. Atlanta tried to move forward. They gave a bad pass away or the orlando came back down their throat so it's finding this balance for them and being smart and not giving bad turnovers turnovers lead to transitions but also being yourselves p._d. Martinez and there's a great article by <hes> on dirty south soccer today about how the guy that takes chances. You have to let him be that guy but also so be smart about it. Who needs this more doyle. Who who will want it more who will value this open cup trophy more. I feel like minnesota would value it more but atlanta needs it more because if you're atlanta and you lose what what's really one of the three or four major trophies at home at the minnesota minnesota united in front of sixty thousand fans or however many is going to be in that stadium. That's an embarrassment so i feel like minnesota would absolutely value it more but it feels like there's much more on the line for atlanta atlanta united minnesota united u._s._o. Become preview. It kills me dave that we're not going to be there. The winter dishes addition unlike any other the david. We've been in the in the mud since the first round of florida's. He's coming in acting like he can go to the file. This is classic. Can you tell me tell me the m._l._s. dot com parachute bro. I just come in and up at the moment. Let's you guys slog it out grinded out and then when it's you know the the bright lights come on and kevin costner's. There's walking around the stadium. I'm there to glad hand baby. Tell me the starting striker for the orange county f c n._p._s. Team will let you go to the open cup. You're not going to chris cortes his mouth. It's all to yourself. We're not playing this game with them. Don't even like there's a line down the middle of this table on one side you guys on the other side people that should be at the open cup final harris auber who is leading the golden boot for tuesday achieved s._a._d. All right thank you. Have you talked to robin frazier. Here's the new head coach of the colorado rapids. He's on the line. Now sees me from denver it's a._t. Not call to the field robin. Welcome extra time thank you. Thanks for having me so <hes> last time we had a job where we sat in a conference room in orlando i think and talked about the colorado colorado foxes for about <hes> close to an hour. We won't do that today but people can go back and listen to it. You're now the head coach of the rapids. Tell me about the decision to take this job. What went into it. <hes> i mean there are a number of things it's obviously <hes> the thing about this group is that there a young <hes> talented group of players who really seem to be hard working and <hes> it just seemed like a good environment to step in and gable to influence as i said a group that that seems to really want to be coached. That's the player group you're going to work with. I want this from personal side man i want. I want to know what it means to be a head coach again again. Why this was the right situation. Your thought process around your name was linked to while ago. I thought this might have happened sooner. Yeah for me obviously a great right. It's really a tremendous thing to be able to from a personal standpoint. <hes> there are a number of things being addressed here one is i've spent more time in denver or anywhere else in adult <hes> just over the years and various things <hes> so this is a place that i feel really comfortable is really excited to have the opportunity to come back here. <hes> professionally i it's great to be a head coach again. Obviously my first go around didn't go the way i wanted to <hes> but it was it provided a real learning experience for me and since then to the other two teams that i've been assistant coach for again just continues to provide provide more and more learning experiences for me at a time when i feel like i'm ready and opportunity came up and the fact that it was in denver just made it perfect. You mentioned being a head coach. You've done it once. That's before one of the biggest things that you feel like you can do differently or you want to change. I think part of it is choosing the right organization to be part of and <hes> colorado's are ever really really good group of people behind. I'm seeing the vision for the club a desire to develop young players <hes> it's. It's all something that's really appealing to. Is there one specific civic part of the game that you experienced and chievo and you've been waiting all these years to get another run at it as a manager. I think soccer wise you're saying yes soccer wise man management whatever that detail is probably both. I don't think that achieve us. I don't think my attacking ideas whereas clear as they needed to be and given the the players we had. I don't think that i probably did enough to make that group more successful than attacking group <hes> having said that i feel like my ideas have evolved a lot since then and i'm excited excited to really put into into practice some things that i've just picked up along the way robin you've obviously evolved since those cheetahs u._s._a. Days but so as major league soccer how has this league change in how would that force you to change a little bit. What have you seen it red bulls and see the league changed leagues changes there. There's more better players more better players. There are <hes> coaches that are more tactically tactically astute. <hes> those are the big differences that you see. They might say more better players. The american players are getting better and better as well well. I think that there has been a real shift in coaching in the last probably four or five years whereas you see american players are more prepared. They're now younger ages and then and then obviously with the influx of money since <hes> twenty eleven the league has just been able to bring it more better players. I i think <hes> the standards are higher. Expectations are higher <hes> and it's just again say what have i learned along the way these are things. I've learned along along the way and how to cope and thrive in that environment when you step into the rapids. Do you have an idea of the way you wanna play or. Are you going to adjust based on the players his at your disposal. Is that question for this week saturday or is that question long-term long-haul long-term long-term definitely have an idea. If i want to play <hes> no question <hes> i ask that question kinda tongue-in-cheek because obviously if you have a pre season you had time to establish average how you wanna play when you have five days with a.

"And what we've have. So is that what you point because you said, like there was just kind of the switch that flips, you know, four or five six years ago, whatever it is where all the stadium started to take off. And it does continue to become more and more popular is there any one thing you can point to. That's really kind of catapulted this whole thing. Well, two hundred million dollar influx on players. I mean that's always going to help. Right. So you're going to get the likes of Joseph Marteen, 'as Miguel Marrone tonight, ta Rossi Carlos villa Brian Fernandez for you're just getting better players. And when you put better players into these new stadiums gave the whole culmination of that comes together. Now, all of a sudden, you know, the football the soccer fan around the world is now watching these games game in a game out. You also have a game. This is something that's kind of under the radar and for our listeners at home. You now have younger players being bought from European teams out of this league Tyler Adams young. American players, Weston mckennie players that are now being bought playing for the. United States men's national team now going to play in Europe. Now, all of a sudden, the ten eleven twelve year olds in our country say, no, I wanna play in Major League Soccer because I wanted then play for some of the best clubs around the world. It's the culmination all that over the last four or five years at his help the sport grow, and I bring it back to the NBA finals this way. Toronto's been one of the best teams franchises molest over the last three or four years they've hosted two cups. They won one of those, and Michelle Beedle and the NBA countdown crew before the game. She said it had a soccer field to it. That's exactly what I saw in game one is that the way that international crowd in Toronto. Brought that soccer flavor to the NBA finals. It's an it's a home field advantage and that is why I think in game two. When you preview this game for Sunday on ABC. I look at it and say you know what the rafters are playing with house money here. They're also going to have that..

"But if anyone watched Atlanta versus FC Cincinnati yesterday, they were slow wound paste, he persists when I say, he Frank de Boer persist with three or four three the here. He is on the disappointing start to the season. They were a little bit spoiled with the results of scores. Law season everybody expected, and it's also normal that, you know, everybody also saw what happened with the Toronto when they played the chambers league last season, and you know, out of nothing we weren't used to play every three games. And so every two days a game. And now in. Thinking seventeen days we play five games or something like that. That's a lot. And and we we also play especially, you know, Monterey is just very good team. It's not the team that you think. Okay. You're going to beat them away. So. We were very close. I think very good results one zero. But again, you know, we have to setbacks in lost and lost time allows nine minutes and our lost five minutes. And yet that's hot, of course. And because you know, everybody gave one hundred percent for it to get a good result. Here's the thing that doesn't sit. Well with last thing to talk about people being spoiled from last season. Okay, fine. Maybe some of that is true to talk about, you know, Monterey being a good side that you can't just assume you're going to be fine, but through but like get hammered by them, three nil. Shots were seventeen five, you know, like the rip them apart mean, that's and I know they've lost Miguel Marrone. And I know that's a really important part of what Atlanta are. But like, you're right. Okay. Fine. No one is saying you have to go out and win this competition. But you can't get your the cream of the crop in MLS. You can't go and get crushed by league AmEx opponent. Also, you can say oh. Oh, you know, we've got called out again. Or, you know, we have this shed you'll that we haven't had in previous seasons. "In heavily rich, and Wayne Rooney and even some of the the younger guys the casual man, you might not know, but it has a lot of talent. I mean, a different league than it was ten years ago even five years ago. So, you know, some of the visiting team coming in or going to be very exciting. I think that that he will get result. You know, soccer is a weird sport in that. Luck has plays a very large doctor because they're still few goals are so few scoring moment. You can if you have an organized back line. And I think ninety has that, you know, counter smartly and and go quickly you can score goals. You can live game. They're not gonna you know that the world on fire. But I think there's an outside chance that they could make the playoffs last season teams got. Points and forty eight point made the playoffs this year. It's going to be a little bit less because the have expanded a little bit. Cincinnati can get forty five forty six points, which is certainly reasonable. If they're a little bit better. I think than people expect you know, you can be fighting for a playoff spot late in even if you don't make it. Yeah. I mean, I think forty gets you in the conversation. I don't think there's any thing about it. But you touched on this just just briefly. This is a team that doesn't seem to be as comprised a team that can create goals. They they they will they will score off the counter, and I'm not sure that scoring off the counter is going to generate you enough offense to keep you in games enough. So you get forty points in one season. I appreciate defense like anyone. But I think you've gotta have creative people up front, and I'm not sure they've got enough of those players. Yeah. I think that's fair. I think that's always a big question. I mean Korngold down but scoring goals is extremely hard. And there not a lot of people around the world who can do it consistently and do it. Well, and those people are very expensive, though, if natty and you're trying to kind of keep costs down, which I think frankly for a long term play, very smart. You're not gonna be able to go out and fight for you know, who's gonna be making six nine dollars year to score a goal in that said Fernando Audie starting forward. He's a guy who has shown that you can score. You know? Darren Matic the guy got beat. He can make some things happen. Bill score goals. They're not gonna outscore teams. That's for sure. But you can win some games or you know, to one company like that one one draws in the road. You can you can make points. You can manufacture by not Davis is our guest. He is ESPN dot com. Soccer writer of what who are who are the who are the high watermark teams in this league this year Atlanta, United obviously had a terrific season last year is that is that still the team with the target. Give me some me some minefields that this team the team in this town is going to run into as the season progresses. I think Atlanta United is probably still the odds on favorite win Cup day Cup last year. They lost their best player who was a guy named Miguel Marrone. He got told her almost thirty million dollars. You're up to Newcastle United, but they brought in a guy. Kitty martinez. The reigning South American player of the year. Year to replace Marrone guys like that don't come all that all that often. I don't think they've ever had a South American renting South American player of the year. Come in Atlanta United. It's going to be very good. The New York red Buller always very good very fit. They play very aggressive pressing style. Kansas City in the Western Conference. I think is going to be very very good p ever meet their coach is one of the best coaches in the league. And he's very good at getting very very good performances out of out of his team weekend week out Elliott the court by former US national team manager. Bob, bradley. Yeah. For last year with the first season. They were a little bit up and down the extension of injuries. But Bradley's a really really good coach. They have a lot of talent. I think they're Los Angeles galaxy day last year as well. They were hit with an injury. But they have bought Abraham of issues. The most fun player to watch in MLS for my money. What sounds like no? It sounds like these are the kind of players they need here in this town. But I know they don't I don't I know that there are few and far between. But I think unless you got a star a guy that is like, you know, the guy on your team. I think the struggle. Don't you? I think that's fair. Yeah. But you know, I it the money issue. And it is the first year team. I think you've seen the last they have their sort of Atlanta United motto where you come in. And you splash millions and millions of dollars and you have to immediately. And then there's the Minnesota United model where you take a lower walk. I natty obviously is taking the slower walk. I'm not gonna get into the finances of how much they have and how much money I would then I think certainly, you know, you don't wanna wait too long. And it is a little pointing to the fans to hear. Hey, come roofer this team. That's probably not gonna make the playoffs, but any expansion team in any sport. You don't really expect great things from them in the first couple of years. And and I think that's okay. I think that's the reality. Noah davis. Check about ESPN dot com. We will visit my friend throughout the course of the year. Thank you so much for your time today. The next MLS team that I coach will be my I would just watching this team throughout the course of its preseason. They look like they're going to have a tough time. Putting the ball in the back of the net. We'll find out. I don't know. We'll see how it transpires that. I in Seattle and go from there. And it was while I was out last night one guy cornered at how are they gonna keep Wiegand would. And all I said, I don't know, man. I said we'll see how they developed this year. "They do a lot of the same pressing stuff that I thought made the red bulls a lot of fun to watch in twenty fifteen and twenty sixteen before the rebels like amp that up to eleven and became poor line on watchable last year. So that, but it's also I care about the US national team. I also care about teams investing in their own culture and their own players. I strongly believe that American and Canadian players who are brought up in professional systems can be as good as if not better than Germans are tinians or talian or Spaniards, and I think SE Dallas believe that too. So I wanna see Paxton call and. His Ferriera and Brandon's Vanya and your favorite player. Brian reynolds. I can't wait to watch Dallas this year. I can't wait to watch. I'm gonna go Minnesota United just pure fascination because that back line has been so bad so bad. And then they go get like who just said could be the complete difference maker, go get Ozzie who has been that guy for a decade, literally the best deamid Melissa's. This is the third year of the third year plan Adrian heath many law goes, it's gotta come good. The got a new stadium. They went and spent the contro- they went out in the market, and they picked up in most veterans got Angelo Rodriguez. It's a valid concern. Maybe remarkably bar fills that whole I like me Geli bar. I think Ethan finley's interesting Kevin Melito hot. Boy, he's been out. Kenny get back beautiful position. I think Minnesota's gonna be very interesting to watch. Because it could be great. It could be middling or it could just be awful taking it off the field. Their home games are going to be fun to watch every single that crowd in that stadium is going to be awesome. I think the clear answer is Columbus new coach new ownership. But. You have the same group of players. So one is what is Caleb porter due to China elevate this or can he continue Gregg Berhalter does. But you take it off the field you take away all that uncertainty from the club. How does it change the mentality of the players? How does it change the their everyday lifestyle? Does that change his team? And then they didn't have time to really build this offseason. So I think they're going to spend in the summer. I think they're gonna make moves because Tim best Pachenko. We're making ten million dollars when Zack Stephan leaves summer a lot of different things going together. And so I just think across the board from off the field to on the field. They're the most interesting team to me. And there's been a lot of talk recently about like who's Tyler Adams doing so well in obviously Miguel Marrone has been amazing through one hundred eighty minutes. Who's the next guy to go for big fee are term might be the one you might be archers really good watch him, folks. Bobby who you watching I'm gonna take their quakes under materiel Mehta omega teams weren't always statically pleasing with Waddell Hora. But they were. Fun to watch.
