tools that a metaverse can bring allows you to create more immersive content Companies are beginning to sell less oil more electrons Research and data on 2000 companies and 130 industry The supply chain breakdown is combining with labor shortages As you see manufacturers continue to dominate or will there be a renewed interest in western manufacturers Bloomberg intelligence with Alex Steele and Paul Sweeney on Bloomberg Over the next hour we will dig inside the big business stories impacting Wall Street and the global markets each and every week we provide into research and data on some of the 2000 companies and 130 industries our analysts cover worldwide Today we break down earnings from the biggest banks on Wall Street Plus even though Apple has returned over $630 billion to shareholders over the past decade the payouts are not slowing down But first let's dig into the media space We've had a lot of M and a over the last several years big media companies getting trying to get even bigger to compete against some of these technology companies It's bringing Keith that wrong enough and BI senior media analyst So Keith one of the deals was Warner Brothers which was part of AT&T got spun out of AT&T merging with another pretty good sized media company discovery communications so now we have Warner discovery at pithy name Talk to us about this new company here Warner discovery How does it fit into the big media landscape Absolutely Paul and thank you So Warner brother discovery is created really a new media heavyweight in the media space This is the second largest media company after Disney in terms of revenue And really the aim here was for them to not just kind of merge their linear TV assets but to really go after streaming in a very very big way And if you kind of just look at the portfolio of the two companies it's a very very complementary portfolio So you have discovery which kind of specializes in reality TV in nonfiction content And then with HBO Max you really have a brand name in terms of scripted dramas and originals And so now you really have this very complementary portfolio which can kind of go after the big streaming players that are that have already kind of gained a lead or whether it's Netflix or Disney but this definitely this combination definitely offers a unique proposition to consumers Yeah it's interesting A lot of content you think about Warner Brothers one of the leading studios in Hollywood plus as you mentioned all the great programming that discoveries and all their cable networks have But again the big issue which I know you've been writing about for the past few years diligently has been this kind of change in the media business from one that was based upon cable systems satellite dishes One that's now streaming based Where are we in that evolution And will it ever be a really good business for these media companies You know a lot of the focus now has really shifted away from just simply streaming subscriber growth And now kind of scrutinizing the earnings potential of these businesses And I think the general sentiment is now veering towards a realization that maybe the new business model yes you can achieve subscribers scale but it is going to come at the expense of profits and what we've seen is if you look at the traditional cable business it has generated over a $100 billion in revenue every year for these big media companies and also a very very healthy EBITDA margin 35 to 40% EBITDA margins The problem with streaming is you're really kind of trading those analog dollars for digital pennies and so yes you can get scale but then the streaming wars have now kind of almost evolved into these spending wars And you have all of these companies spending something like a $150 billion of a $150 billion just to kind of feed that streaming beast if you will And what that results in is obviously a huge losses and it's going to take a very long time for any of these companies to kind of even break even on the streaming businesses It doesn't sound like an environment where these stocks can perform You want to own these things What are people thinking about this media space now I think what's going to happen is investors are really preparing for a shakeout of obviously you have Disney and Netflix which are kind of heading the streamers but Amazon and apple are also kind of quietly sneaking in and trying to get a stronger and stronger foothold Of course with Warner discovery I think we have a very credible top tier streaming player But again there's a lot of nervousness in the market right now not just with a general slowdown.

"miguel cabrera" Discussed on Effectively Wild: A FanGraphs Baseball Podcast

"We are in no way impugning the devotion of a's fans or their commitment to baseball or calling them fair-weather or anything like that is just, like you said, this is what happens when you drive seemingly in intentional wedge between your team and the fan base and then hike up prices as part of the privilege. So it's really too bad because I don't know, like we've talked about this before. I've only been to a handful of games that whatever it was called at the time. It wasn't RingCentral? Yes. Someone else suggested that they should call it ringworm. And now that it is currently infested by kids. So I've only been to a handful of games there, but one of them was the a's we're playing the Yankees. And so it was a well attended game because the Yankees were in town, but it was not as if the only people there were Yankees fans, like there were boisterous, ace fans, they were into it. It had a great vibe. You know, like people were there to see baseball and they cared about it and they shouted down the Yankees fans and it was just, you know, I was like, this is a great, this is great. This is a great baseball atmosphere. And so it is just so discouraging that, you know, when you are gifted with that with a fan base, it clearly wants to care about your team and does care about your team to disregard that prior sort of emotional investment because you're not willing to make a financial one. It's just really a bit just a shame and they deserve those chances are better. And so the people who play for the a's right now and the people who work for the as, you know, and are trying to do their best to put a winning team on the field despite just wild budget restrictions. Everybody involves your deserves a lot better than what they're getting. And it's a real problem. Yeah, the projected payroll according to raster resource 50 million for the a's which is the lowest in MLB. So I don't know what the endgame is here. I mean, if this is what ownership wants so that they can say, well, fans are not supporting the team and therefore that strengthens our case for leaving or for prying a ballpark out of Oakland and they can argue, oh, it's because we have this old ballpark that is infested with feral cats, which granted, I mean, just because it's old doesn't mean that it is necessarily infested with feral cats. I haven't read the Wrigley is infested with feral cats or that Fenway is infested with feral cats, so that is not necessarily a product of its age. But that ballpark has problems and despite the vibe in the atmosphere noted, like sure, they could use a new ballpark. The conditions under which they are expecting to get it and not just the ballpark, but also the whole real estate kitten caboodle. Kit and caboodle, but in this case, perhaps all right, you get it. So I think is that expression kit and caboodle? Have I seen that wrong my entire life? Yeah, it's not kittens, although in this case, it could be. I mean, but you say kitten caboodle. To signify the and the joining makes sense. So. I don't know what to say. I wouldn't say that ace fans should be supporting this team in this effort and the lack of investment that ownership has made it in this payroll. They should be voting with their feet and with their butts being on the couch instead of in the ballpark. But does that just further the aims of ownership? It's like a lose lose situation sort of. So it just, it sucks. It just generally sucks. Yeah, it genuinely sucks. And I get that when teams relocate, they take baseball from one place, and they put it in another place that didn't have it at that level, though it's not as if there isn't baseball in and around Vegas, but setting that aside. I just hope that if the team relocates that we are able to hold on to what I don't know, I don't know. It's just really too bad. This is a storied franchise, you know? This is like, and they have great uniforms. And all this hair, you know, and they have smart people working for them, and they have good players. And they used to have a lot more of them than they do now. It's just, it doesn't have to be like this. And I wish that we had better mechanisms in place to say, like, we can kind of rework all of this so that we have owners who are in a position either, you know, even if we take the ownership group there at their word where they can't afford to spend more. Like even if we believed that which we don't, but even if we did, we should be able to demand that they do spend more. Like we've talked about before, there are only 30 teams like we are unfortunately lousy with billionaires, like surely we can find someone else who can buy a franchise and say, look, we're going to we're going to really commit to this thing and sort of pay back what we have already received in time and treasure from the fan base. And we just don't have that. And it sure feels bad. There used to be Ferro cats at Shea stadium and I'm looking at a story here from 2008 before the mets moved to city field and there was someone in organizer for a local group called neighborhood cats that claimed that there were 20 to 40 cats who called Shea stadium home, although a parks department spokeswoman claimed that there were only a couple of cats and that when they were caught there taken to a shelter. So there is a history of feral cats at ballparks and perhaps old dilapidated ballparks that will soon be abandoned anyway. Worried about the cats more worried, I guess, about the franchise just in general. 2703, the number of announced fans at that game. That is lower than the number of hits that Miguel Cabrera has recorded in his career has that for a segue. Oh boy. As we speak, he's still sitting on 29 99 after he had three in his previous game the tigers are playing as we speak. He is zero for two thus far, but maybe he'll get to 3000..

"The cubs then on october fifteenth. They absolutely just the cubs and they do it again. On the fifteenth as well winning both of those games by outscoring the chicago cubs fifteen to nine losey or they win that last game by a score of nine to six to win that record and now i mean the i mean the championship series is one of the most infamous series in. Mlb history on one side. You have the marlins the miracle who had just a few months before we're in the cellar of the end of the nfl and on the other side the chicago cubs who were the lovable losers. Who for a very long time. We're just so close to victory. They jumped to a three to one lead including two out of three in miami and they were sure favorites to take the series when it shifted back to chicago but in game five an absolute stellar performance by josh beckett brought the series back to chicago and back to wrigley were the home team always has the advantage and with the cubs needing to win only one game and having studs like mark pryor and kerry wood on the hill in those games most people thought the marlins hopes were over and game six. The cubs enjoyed a comfortable three to nothing. Lead with one out in the thinning when it all fell apart in the marlins went on to win. The game tying the series. This was the steve bartman incident. And now you can't really blame bartman for the cubs loss entirely in the series. But i mean in. There's still a lot of baseball left. But i mean like it's it's definitely infamous in. It's not necessarily yet but we'll end. We're gonna end with the world series right here and i know got really nerdy about this team but it's a really interesting team at nfl. I find it to be very very interesting. So yankee stadium. Obviously it's a massive stadium game one at yankee stadium. Marlins win by a score of three to two in front of fifty five thousand in new york. They would lose though the next game by score of one to six in front of those same fifty five thousand fans to tie the series at one to one and then go home to play in miami now the yankees would win by a score of one to six as well in front of the sixty five thousand fans in miami to to bring the marlins down to one to two in the series but following eight four to three twelve inning victory. the marlins then went on to win the rest of the series outscoring the yankees by eight four scoring sixty games or six runs in game five to bring this to bring the series to and actually to end the series in miami. Send it back to new york. Giving the marlins a three two lead and then on october twenty fifth of two thousand three eight to nothing score the miami marlins won the two thousand three world series. I mean it's it's pretty amazing. The the world series marked one hundred anniversary of the annual event although because it had not been a world series played in what would have been it. Second year of one thousand nine hundred four the cancellation of all postseason play as a result of the strike in one thousand nine hundred ninety four. It was the ninety ninth world series played. Josh beckett went on to win the world series. Mvp this was joe. Buck from Joe buck quote from him during the during the world series. Trying to win it all again. Slow roller right side beckett. Picks it up tax kasahda in the florida. Marlins or world champions the marlins have stunned the yankees shocked new york and this improbable team improbable. Ride the end up on top winning in six games over the yankees. And that's gonna do.

"So it's two thousand and three right. I was only like two and three years. Old during the two thousand three season for the marlins. But jeffrey loria was definitely not. He was the new owner second ear into his tenure. As the owner of the miami. Marlins if you i really encourage you all like i literally. He has no idea that i exist. But david sampson is. I'm a big fan of the way that he breaks down the business aspect of baseball because he was the team. President for the miami marlins. And he was jeffrey loria stepson. Ask for a while as well. But he was the president of the expos. And the marlins of until. I believe around twenty seventeen but that you in three florida. Marlins season was the eleventh season for major. For the major league baseball franchise in the national league. The marlins ended up playing the yankees in the world series. And it was. It's a bridge series. If i do say so myself. The marlins became just the second team in baseball history to win a world series championship. Despite being ten or more games below five hundred at some point in the season the marlins at one point in the season were twenty were nineteen and twenty nine. The marlins wouldn't get back to the postseason until last year in twenty twenty. It was really amazing but the the one of the big reasons that this team was so good is because they pulled off some major major moves in the off season. The most impressive was going and getting draw. Rigas the ten time gold glover they also traded for catcher. Charles johnson. Outfielder preston williams. Both of those guys came from the colorado rockies for four their leadoff man want bear on november sixteenth of two thousand. Two charles johnson was traded by the florida. Marlins we vic darren board. Pablo zun a- in preston wilson to the colorado rockies for one mike hampton and cash shortly thereafter hampton was traded to the atlanta braves for tim. Spoon bake bar. Margaret spooning bargar. She's me they also signed some pretty good I mean obviously they padraig is was a free agent signing. They also signed kevin. Laura from the red sox and they also Signed todd holdsworth and matt trainer as free agents that year. So they're opening day. Starters you had josh beckett on the bump. You had louise castillo at second base. Not the luis castillo that we know with the reds two different. Sto actually you also had one encarnacion and right field. Alex kansallis short todd hollandsworth and left. Derek lee was at first and mike. Mike lowell was at third base. Quantier was in center and yvonne. Rodriguez was at the dish so they ended up in the season. With a record of ninety one in seventy one ten games back of the braves for first but they did end up playing very very very well and so they got off to a very sluggish. Start jeff touring. The manager was at at the start of the season. He was struggling out of the gate and the tea and let the team to a sixteen twenty to start adding to that. Their three top pitchers were mark redman. Aj brunette and josh beckett. They all had eat they. All of those guys had endured injuries that season but beckett and redman were able to finish the rest of their two thousand three season on may eleventh tour. Borg was fired and replaced by jack. Mckinnon mckean who was a seventy two seventy two years old and began his major league managerial career in one thousand nine hundred ninety three with the royals and these guys in miami absolutely love this man so some midseason acquisitions. They traded for jeffco nine. Who was a first baseman. in exchange. For a couple of flavors they called up dontrelle willis from the mud. Cats they also called up ugueth urbina right. Handed pitcher decided. They didn't call him up. They traded for her beena from the rangers in exchange for adrian gonzalez and two other minor leaguers. They also signed aaron small an called up miguel cabrera. And that's the that's the. That's the biggest reason why i wanted to Why i wanted to bring in irc talk about this team. Specifically is because mickey was honesty this. The first team was on so padraig. He didn't play very much but he did play in eighty seven games for them. A wasn't a starter but he did have twelve home runs. Sixty two rb is he hits you. Sixty eight that season and had eighty four hits in his three hundred and fourteen at bats. He was he was definitely the guy that played the most out of every platoon flare rotational player He played in or mike. Lowell was the starting third baseman. Mike lowell led the team in home. Runs with thirty two. And rb is with one hundred. Five louis. Castio led the team in average with eight three fourteen average and the lowest average on the team out of their starters was todd hollandsworth. He was hitting two fifty four on the year healed but he only played in ninety three games. Derek lee was also on the team. Eric lee played in one hundred and fifty five games that year at thirty one home runs in ninety. Two rb is very very big for him. Pudge rodriguez hit almost three hundred just underneath it. Actually with eight to ninety seven average he also had a five. Rbi's on the year. They this i mean. This team had a ton of of the same habits on its talent like it's not it's not like they didn't have any talent but starting pitchers most guy. The guy who started the most games was a tie between brad penny and coral pavan. No both of those guys started thirty. Two games bevanda went led the team in innings pitched with two hundred and one but brad benny mark. Redman and dontrelle willis. All had fourteen wins on the year. Josh beckett had a three eight record. Carl bravado led the team in losses however with thirteen losses yet twenty five total decisions for 'em. He had four thirty-three average josh becky even though he had the least amount of starts out of their rotation that year. Aj brunette only got five or four starts before he was shut down for the rest of the year but beckett in his twenty three starts in twenty four periods is led the team in strikeouts with one hundred and fifty two which is really really impressive. Especially when you consider john willis who was apr any all star. He had one hundred. Forty two strikeouts in twenty seven appearances. Air twenty seven. Yeah twenty seven stars mark redman only had one hundred fifty one strikeouts in twenty nine starts that six more starts any. Didn't even have one less strikeout than the josh. Josh beckett was a stud back in the day that's not even a. It's not even a real question if we're gonna be really honest so during the season though..

Marlins jeffrey loria david sampson charles johnson baseball todd hollandsworth jeffrey loria stepson josh beckett colorado rockies Rigas gold glover preston williams vic darren Pablo zun preston wilson Margaret spooning bargar todd holdsworth Aj brunette louise castillo atlanta braves

"In the chase for your next milestone three thousand hits would look like not that long ago a milestone that would take close to a full season for cabrera to end up reaching. It ended up falling that season-long expectation six weeks before the the tigers last game and obviously miguel brera would have loved to have done it at home or in miami where he's from but that doesn't always happen so he hit his five hundred in toronto right and in all honesty. That really couldn't have been a worst plate better place. I guess you could say other than at home homemade at an in detroit or at omen miami. I mean it's pretty awesome. Would like he just missed hitting it. Wednesday night Or pat this past wednesday About a week ago now sending a fly ball to right field warning track off angels. closer russ rice l. a. glaze. And he he almost was able to do it at home and the and the tigers fans were all there watching him but unfortunately he wasn't able to get that one out but shohei ohtani said after that game back this past that past wednesday. I believe it was on the eighteenth of august He said show it said. Obviously he's a great hitter and one of the greatest of all time and he's a wonderful person i've dealt when i've dealt with him he so respected in the baseball world it i it would have been okay if i gave up his five hundred th homer personally. I want to see it happen soon. Cabrera emitted felt the pressure. You went eight homeless games after hitting his four hundred ninety nine home run in baltimore. He went four for thirty one cents. That drive when he stepped to the plate. Sunday with one out in the sixth and add a one to nothing. Detroit deficit grope last week. In detroit was tough. It was the first time in five six years. I see a crowd like that excited with a lot of energy. He said it was nice to see a lot of fans. It was nice to see energy backing comerica park. There was a lot of things going on in my mind. Because i want to do this in detroit but it's tough to hit a home. It's tough to hit home. Runs over there like it is. That's a pitcher's ballpark. It's really hard to get one al in in detroit it really is. That's there's a reason why like when you have when you look at the pitchers over there. They typically have lower eerie. Er just because it's it's tough ballpark to hit home. Runs in matt started them off. Though with a pair of ninety four mile an hour singers and with a one count they did try and change the speeds and try and get to cabrera chasing off the plate with the change up but cabrera's opposite field swing and swing. The he's been working on all you're trying to ingrain which the swing he said was inconsistent. It connected when miguel cabrera was asked if he thought it was gone off the bat. Cabrera said no. I don't think so when i hit it. I say come on get up. Get up something like that. But i play commerical. Parks every fly ball that too. That part is out. I'm glad i hit the fly ball there because if i hit it at comerica park. It's going to be two outs. So like i mean. It's like he's really happy that he was able to do there. And stack asked definitely back him up because that ball would have been an out in twenty seven of the thirty. Mlb ballparks commerical bark. As one of the exceptions the four hundred foot drive just cleared the fence and landed in the underbelly of the rogers centre with the tigers. Bullpen catcher. tim rims quickly retrieved it. It was cabrera's first home. Run in toronto since september ninth in two thousand seventeen. And oh my gosh. He is so so awesome. And we're gonna and we're gonna talk about his actual is actual career now Like just over not not just focusing on that home run. But now we're going to talk about his entire career. And miguel cabrera was born in maccarone aghuar state and venezuela to the choose parents. Miguel in georgina cabrera. Miguel cabrera was signed by the marlins in nineteen ninety nine as an amateur free agent in came up through the farm system. Teaming up with feature major leaguers adrian. Gonzales in dontrelle wills willis excuse me. He began his professional career in two thousand at shortstop in the gulf coast league after batting two sixty with ten doubles two triples. "How amazing his career has been in terms of sort of meaty media landscape. You know. I think if it was mike trout. Who did it. Who is also. I think flirting with it. That year would have been. You know the biggest story in sports and it felt like you know. Cabrera was getting his do In terms of just like what a absurd baseball talent he was in terms of hitting for power and heating for contact But maybe joining both the huts clubs. I mean i say this. He'll be obviously a first ballot hall of famer. But i do think there is a certain amount of like. It's hard to imagine but underrated nece considering how much he's accomplished. And how much of a like historically great hitter. he's been even in this. You know sort of latter years where he's obviously not been the same player in the same. I think could be said about potholes holes as well. Yeah i think you're right You know. I think there is maybe a certain sort of bias Against latin american players that you know the media just doesn't tell their stories the same way. And i do think also. He was a victim of sort of becoming the guy that like. If trout was the avatar for the new school that that i think a lot of younger fans wanted to see gain ground in gain the upper hand as how we talked about baseball cabrera by definition sort of became the vehicle for sort of the old school and the older sports writers. The ones that were pushing. The you know the triple crown by definition those stats have all sort of been downplayed. I think is the right term. You used it earlier by us. Sabermetrics types and their reasons for that. We don't have to get into the reasons around that. But i do think that sort of like you saw takes around that time like is the triple crown. Even that important. It's just an arbitrary collection of three metrics. And it's like okay. Come on like you don't have to throw out the whole arc of baseball history in just to make a point. You don't have to downplay this thing that again. Miguel cabrera did for the first time in forty five years just to sort of win your argument over which metric should be used or whatever i agree and i think it's still well not perfect. It's still a proxy for getting on base and making contact hitting power and driving in runs..

"You guys listening in. We're doing a word association game here. We are onto the national league giving you guys and update on the standings but also kind of touching base on where each team currently ranks in this year. Right so what word goes best with what's going on with the organization so let's start out with the national league east and the last place miami marlins they have lost seven straight games. Three seven in their last ten. They were swept in a four-game set by the reds after being swept by the braves so to the hottest teams in the national league taken out on the last place marlins they'll now face off against the fourth place nationals coming up here over the next couple of game so they'll look to. They'll look to right. The ship there in miami but for the marlins i'd have to put annoying right i mean pesky maybe a better word. So they've been unable to build off of last season surprise trip to the postseason but they remain a young team capable of being a thorn in the side of contenders. There were respectable. Twenty two and twenty six against the rest of the national league east including being six three against the new york mets so a division race. That's going to go down to the stretch here. Although atlanta has built a bit of a lead which will get to hear briefly. But the marlins could certainly be a thorn in the side of these coming down the stretch is they have a handful of games remaining that could help decide ultimately who wins this division in fourth place. You've got the washington nationals. They are three and seven in their last ten. Losers of two straight fifty three and seventy overall they lost two out of three to the brewers over the weekend. And of course will face off against miami coming up here but for washington. I mean they're just stuck right. They hit the reset button at the trade deadline. They moved to max scherzer trade turner a bunch of other veteran pieces in their roster tear down but the reason they're stuck is because they still owe patrick corbin three years. Eighty three million dollars. Stephen strasburg five years. One hundred and seventy five million dollars. I mean strasberg's recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome surgery which can be extremely difficult in corbin as six point zero four. Era in twenty three starts this year so in over two hundred and fifty million to two guys who have given you absolutely nothing this year just is not a place you want to be at least some other teams rebuilding don't have payroll and could add some teams but washington seems to be stuck with two guys there for at least the foreseeable future so hopefully strasbourg and bounce back. He certainly fun to watch when his game is on. Obviously the world series. Mvp just a few years back but my goodness those contracts do not look good at this particular time next. You got the new york mets to win eight and their last tent they were able to salvage the game sunday against the dodgers snapped. The dodgers nine game winning streak but the mets man they continue to fall sixty one and sixty three now overall. They'll face off against the giants in the next couple of games. They lost two out of three to the giants last week. So they're tough. Stretch continues here. But for the mets. I have obviously a disappointment right. They seem to be an overall dismay lofty expectations. Coming into this year. New owner steve cohen added lynn. Door added other pieces. And now you got steve. Cohen's take shots on twitter at the team's lack of productivity. I mean lindores had the worst year of his career and the mets have absolutely plummeted from first pace down to third place in this august. Tailspin that they've been and so the the mets are gonna right. I said that a few weeks ago on here and here it is. It just seems every year something comes up in new york just ultimately cannot close but speaking of not closing you got the second place philadelphia phillies sixty three and sixty one. Four and six in their last ten. And for these guys. I mean what better word than rollercoaster to describe. What's going on winners of eight straight games then going on and going to and four on a road trip and three and whatever four and six in their last ten after winning these eighth straight games. I mean this team went from four and a half games out all the way up to first place and then now five games out in this division here so this is just an average baseball team that has put its fans in an absolute rollercoaster over the past couple of weeks now all the way back five games from the red hot atlanta braves and speaking of the braves winners of nine straight games. Sixty eight and fifty six overall. I it seems that they figure things out in atlanta. They are now against. We'd been the orioles swept the marlins swept the nationals. These schedule does pick up here in the next couple of weeks gets a little difficult for them with the yankees. The dodgers and the giants given themselves a five game cushion by taking care of business certainly has been impressive and my word for the brave says they were able to fortify thinks they called for reinforcements right rather than throwing in the towel. Kunia went down. They saw an open race and went for it. Acquiring layer divall rodriguez. Rosario peterson and all of these guys have absolutely contributed to the hottest team in the national league here in august with the best record one of the best records here in the national league in my goodness atlanta looks to be primed to win another division title here in the nfl east for the national league central in the basement. Of course you have to start with the pittsburgh pirates. The pirates are three and seven in their last ten forty four and eighty overall. They did take two out of three from the cardinals in a surprised weekend series win and it will now be the battle of the basement as they'll face off against the diamondbacks here over the next couple of days but further pirates. I mean what other word can use besides abysmal. They won twelve games in april. But they've won only thirty more games here in three and a half months. I mean my goodness. It's just what happened right. They traded away. Adam frazier tyler anderson. Richard rodriguez they've hit rock bottom. They have a two and fifteen record in august with a minus fifty two run differential. So this team is borderline unwatchable. I mean you could use the word. Unwatchable as opposed to abysmal. If you really want it to because the pirates my goodness just a triple eight team here playing in the major leagues the chicago cubs there. Two and eight in their last ten fifty four and seventy two overall. They were swept by the royals over the weekend. They'll now face off against iraqis a team that they could beat a couple of times here but for the cubs. I mean it's gotta be reset right. They crush the reset button at the deadline. Obviously shipping off a bunch of pieces. Rob rizzo bryant. Kimbrel all these guys so man. It's time for the next chapter there in chicago and sorry to say to you cubs fans it could be another long rebuild their if some of those prospects don't pan out in third place. You got the saint louis cardinals. Sixty three and sixty six and four in their last ten even losing two out of three to the pirates over the weekend. They now have the interleague matchup against.

What do you guys want to hear more about. What do you want to hear less about. I would certainly be very grateful for you guys to do that as well as be a friend. Tele friend sheriff's with one of your buddies out there. Click that share button. Send this video or this podcast out. No video here yet. But send the podcast out to one of your buddies say. Hey check this out. Kevin's playing word association. What word would you put to your favorite ball ballclub out there worth where they currently stand here as. We're almost through the month of august. So twenty twenty one coming around the home stretch right the final turn for you horse fans out there so it's going to be a lot of fun here with both wildcard races heating up and a few teams getting hot out there. So we'll do this across the standings here as well starting out in the american league here for segment number three looking at the american league east and going from the basement up right the baltimore orioles like we talked about losers of eighteen straight games. My goodness gracious what What can you say if you're a baltimore fan out there. They've lost eighteen in a row. They'll now face the angels at home here as again. They're trying to catch those toward one. Thousand nine hundred sixty one philadelphia phillies for the record twenty three consecutive single season losses. But the word. I'm putting for the orioles is it's a waiting game. So it's a word or a phrase right. It's going to be a couple of words for those of you already saying. hey man. that's more than one word. It's going to be a short phrase. Alright so it's a waiting game right. The orioles are poised for their third one hundred loss season in the last four years. They've shown very little indication that they're ready to turn the corner and starts really contending. But adly rush mond and grayson rodriguez or finally knocking on the door of the big league level two of the top prospects within the organization in cedric mullins. Really looks like an emerging star. So he's really the only guy currently at the big league level that you could put a lynch pin in and say hey it looks like rebuilding maybe coming to an end. We got cedric molins. And all star out there in centerfield next on the list and fourth place. You have the toronto blue jay sixty four and fifty eight three and seven in their last ten games so it's been a tough stretch including losing four out of their last five. They lost two out of three to tigers over the weekend and things don't get any easier when the white sox come to town so for the blue jays. I have close but no cigar again. They've improved this year. Things are looking better there in toronto and the the expanded postseason in twenty twenty. Got them into the playoffs with a thirty two. And twenty eight record after three previous straight losing seasons in their remaining relevant once again a handful of games out in the wild garp headlined by vlad guerrero junior boba shit and upstart pitching staff bargain signing of robbie ray but they still may be a year away from true contention so i would say close but no cigar to all of those blue jay fans out there hoping to make the playoffs this year in third place now is the boston. Red sox seven games out of first place. They are five and five in their last ten. So they've kind of righted. The ship a sweep against the yankees are being swept by the yankees. Really drop them down in the standings and man my sane for them is danger will robinson because things have now. Look good there in boston. They had a half game lead in the american league east. On july thirtieth. This was the same day where the front office traded for kyle schwarzer and a pair of middle relievers but that has quickly evaporated to seven games and they are trending in the wrong direction. So danger will robinson for all you red sox fans next in second place you have the new york yankees man talk about hot ballclub right now new york nine and one in their last ten winners of nine straight to get to seventy two and fifty two on the season swept red sox followed that up by sweeping the twins with their fourth game on sunday being postponed due to the hurricane here in the northeast and now they travel to atlanta to face off against the braves one of the hottest teams in the national league so yankees brave certainly one of the best match ups here early on in the week but for the yankees i have the quote it is alive right to quote franken stein. He is back are rejuvenated. Reinvigorated whichever synonym you wanna use. But they are alive and my goodness gracious since adding joey gallo. Anthony rizzo starter andrew. Heaney i mean this team has certainly turned around. And they got the best record in the american league here in august and our right firmly in that playoff talk now but still in first place the tampa bay race seven and three in their last ten so as hot as new. York's ben only able to game two games. In the american league east in the raise at seventy seven and forty eight now have a short series against the phillies here. Another team that scuffling early on here in august and continuing through august but for tampa bay. It's unconventional greatness further race. I mean charlie. Morton moves on blake. Snell moves on tyler glass now now on the injured list so ryan. Yarborough is the only pitcher on the staff is thrown more than one hundred innings. The team starters ranked twenty eighth in the majors in innings pitched so it's very unique. Approach down there in tampa bay to building a staff but once again top. Ten in the majors team. Era it's all coming together and it's working for the tampa bay race transitioning announced the american league central in the basement and the central. You have the minnesota twins losers of three straight fifty. Four and seventy overall as they were swept by the yankees. They'll now face off against the red sox as life doesn't get any easier for minnesota. And i have them at a crossroads bone thugs and harmony. Reach.

"It is monday. August twenty third and we got a great show lined up for you guys here today. A lot to talk about across major league baseball first. We're going to dive in and talk a little bit in detail about the career of miguel cabrera. Who hit his five hundred home. Run here sunday night. So we're going to do a little bit of an appreciation segment for miguel kind of dive into some news notes trivia. Whatever you wanna call it about me. Miguel and talk about. Who's next for the five hundred home. Run club then in segment number two. We're going to get you guys up to date with the latest across baseball news notes injuries updates all the good stuff that happened during the week. We'll discuss and then finally in segments three and four. We're going to break down the updated standings but we're gonna put a little bit of a twist on it this week instead of doing it per one segment. We're going to do it in the last two and we're going to play a little bit of a word association right. Where does your team stand here. In the month of august. What is the best word or set of words. Great a little phrase or a little same that describes where your ball club is right now. In the month of august transitioning into september kind of what word best describes your ball club. And i'd love to hear from you guys when we get to that part of the show. Let me know in the comments all that. Good stuff after you guys. Listen if you think. I was right on with the word association that i attached to your ball club out there. So let's dive right into it here today like i said monday. August twenty third on sunday. Miguel cabrera became the twenty eighth member of the five hundred home run club. He went yard in the sixth inning. Took a one one pitch downtown. From left-hander stephen matt's sending the ball over the scoreboard in right center field. It was a four hundred plus home run tied the score at one and then the tigers went on to win the game five to three in eleven innings so i out shout out to the fans in toronto. The fourteen thousand six hundred and eighty five fans at the rogers centre gave him a standing ovation and as well as a curtain call. So just shout out to the fans in toronto for one the greatness of the moment and sharing that with miguel cabrera so just a fantastic scene there as micky again reaches a five hundred home. Run club twenty eighth all time but it did take him some time from number four ninety nine all the way to number five hundred. He went thirty. One at bats between the two home runs which was the longest stretch or excuse me third longest stretch in major league history behind harmon killebrew. Who went forty three at bats between four ninety nine and five hundred and then jimmy fox when a total of sixty one at bats between the two home runs so cabrera the third longest stretch between four ninety nine and five hundred but certainly well worth the wait for maguy and cabrera now in his nineteenth season in the major lakes. I mean you can look back all the way to his first season and you knew that he was going to be great during his time with the florida. Marlins at the time his rookie year two thousand and three his first major league game. He hit a walk off home. Run to dead center in the bottom of the eleventh inning so homerun number one came in game number one and then five hundred nineteen seasons later. So man it's been a slow trek to five hundred here. Recently for cabrera. He had four hundred and forty. Six home runs. After the twenty sixteen season he had thirty eight home runs that year. So you're thinking to yourself okay. it's probably gonna take two years. Thirty home runs. That gives him five hundred in six. So you're looking at twenty eighteen especially because in twenty sixteen. When he hit thirty eight it was the tenth time that he had reached thirty home. Runs out of the realm of normality. For maybe two top thirty in a year but he hasn't hit more than sixteen in a season sense injuries in age. Have pretty much. you know. Put a damper in his power output but his five hundred home run was also his thirteenth. Here of twenty twenty one. So he's been pretty much paste at about fifteen home runs per year which is why it took him some time to go from four forty six all the way to five hundred but carreira also one of the best all around hitters of the five hundred run plot his three eleven career batting average ranks fifth among the twenty eight players. Only nine batted plus three hundred and their career in three eleven puts fifth on that rates. His career adjusted batting. Average is nineteen point two percent better than the league average which ranks behind only ted williams and babe ruth among the five hundred home run club members he also won batting titles in two thousand eleven when he hit three forty four two thousand twelve when he hit three thirty two thousand thirteen when he hit three forty eight and then two thousand fifteen when he hit three thirty eight. The only other right handed hitters with five hundred plus career home runs and they plus three hundred. Average are manny ramirez. Hank aaron willie mays and frank. Thomas cabrera's four batting titles also ties ted williams for most among members of the five hundred home run club. He's also the only member of the club who was born in venezuela so the first venezuelan to reach five hundred home runs. He's won two home run. Titles leading the american league with thirty seven back in two thousand and eight in which was his first season with the tigers after a trade from the marlins and then again in two thousand twelve when he hit forty four two thousand twelve was also. Miguel cabrera's triple crown season in which he became the first player. Since carl your strengths. Keep in nineteen sixty seven to lead his league in home runs. Rbi's and batting average. He won the first of back-to-back. Mvp that season where he beat out. Mike trout and back to back years to win the award. He also has forty one homer games in two three homer games. His two three homerun games came against oakland. Back in two thousand and ten as well as texas back in twenty thirteen now diving into some next level stats on megi. His most victimized team he has fifty ohm runs against the cleveland indians. So indians fans out there listening have been saying man. This guy's been killing us for years and that's absolutely true with the lead of fifty and his career against the indians his most victimized pitcher he hit seven home runs off of phil hughes fill. You spent a lot of time in minnesota so in the division there in the american league central as megi s ad hughes's number to the tune of seven career home runs. He also has seven. Walk off home runs the first one in his first game. of course. coming. Off of al levine. So seven walk off home. Run certainly an excellent statistic as well for miguel cabrera. So what's next for maguy. Well it's the three thousand hit club. Three thousand hit club has thirty two members so he's already a member of the five hundred home run club with twenty eight. He can become the thirty third member of the three thousand hit club. He needs one hundred thirty four or you needed one hundred and thirty four at the start of the season. He's not quite there yet. As he's at two thousand nine hundred fifty five currently he did have one stint on the injured list earlier which slowed him up a little bit but he is still signed through two thousand twenty three so he's got two more years on the contract. Which makes you think that he should reach that. Plateau that mark here early in twenty twenty two there are only six members however of the three thousand hit slash five hundred home run club and those members are hank. Aaron willie mays our pull's eddie. Murray alex rodriguez and rafael palmeiro. So miguel cabrera certainly gotta go down as one of the best all time hitters across the sport as again he sitting for average as well as power which is certainly very impressive so Three thousand probably going to have to wait till next year but ultimately it does look like he is going to reach that mark cabrera also obviously his best years there. Twenty eleven through twenty thirteen. He had three straight american league batting. Titles that's just absolutely insane. Let's see believe it or not. Roger hornsby is the only other major league player right handed hitter in the live ball era to claim three consecutive batting crowds. Now back in the day nap la- holy in nineteen o one thousand nine hundred eighty four as well as honus wagner.

"Today that's geico dot com before we get out of here tonight very interesting matchup here in detroit where shohei otani who is is is hands down the clubhouse leader for mvp with what he's doing with his bat with what he's doing with this pitching and all that pitches against the tigers and miguel cabrera. Who was going for his five hundred home run and it's interesting. To see these. These two superstars at different stages of their careers. Obviously i don't know if you saw the play last night Where otani got a single and was on first base where cabrera was playing i and cabrera stole one of his banning gloves out of his pocket without without otani knowing and and otani only realize it because he tried to shoved in his pocket and it fell and he saw it on the ground. They had a laugh then the next time he got up and he. I don't know if you walked. Or you gotta hit or whatever but he took his batting gloves out and gave them to the bat boy before he went to first base so we wouldn't get ripped off but it'll be an interesting match up between the two of them and ironically these two teams which are way way different in terms of talent on their roster have fairly close to the same record. The tigers are actually only five games under five hundred fifty eight sixty three and the angels still earn five hundred at sixty sixty one. Does that say more about the tigers or more about the angel. I think more about tigers. I think they're they're. They're you know exceeding everyone's expectation to a degree without question. And you angels. They get past. Trout hasn't played in months and other things. But i by a vote a margin of fifty three to forty..

"That's crazy last year. There were plus twelve. Zaidi's first year there are minus seventy. This was the organizational priority. And the reason. I think it was so astute is because when you play in that ballpark you have to have guys with big big raw power. You can't like if you're going to build a team to hit home runs. You can't afford to have a punch and judy guys that are gonna you know. Run into sunday. They might another ballpark. He's built a team at big power and has built a pitching staff and guys that can keep the ball on the ground in some cases or benefit from a good outfield defense. That is what he's he's leaned into that. So we decided we're gonna outta homer opponent and we're gonna win that way. They're like the prototypical twenty twenty one team because not only do not see the when you look down the roster what. It looks like he was an average baseball faith but in baseball. Right now you can do that. Well you're gonna homer and you can and you can limit Your opponents doing so. You're gonna win two Games and that's exactly what the giants are doing. It's a remarkable story but his team building. I think it has been shrewd and in this particular. Sense have been brilliant. What are you got a gal. Cabrera future hall of famer i think miguel cabrera has gone from being someone who we all sort of agreed was a i search future first ballot hall of fame. Type someone who's been wildly underrated now. Obviously the career archies taken such that over the last five years. He's been about a league average. He's been about a replacement level player. He's obviously been paid a lot of money during that span and collected a lot of stats. But he didn't hit a five hundred run sometime later this week..
