"This is native America calling. I'm Shaun spruce. Native Americans officially won citizenship in 1924, but voting remained a right that Native Americans had to fight for on a state by state basis for decades to come. He was among many tribal citizens who returned from fighting for their country and questioned why they, as citizens and war veterans, continued to be barred from voting. "miguel" Discussed on How I Built This

"Just Friends. I know and we'll talk about this in a bit about what you're working on now, but would you ever start another business with Adam? I don't think that I would primarily because it doesn't support my own journey. I put myself into that second position because of a lot of insecurity and things that I thought I couldn't do. And so being around a person who is very much an alpha is very much like the person who wants to be at the center wants to be in control. I don't think that would be the right fit for me for my own growth and my own potential learning, but if I was just looking to like, I don't know, make money, which is not what I care about. Then I would say probably he's going to continue to be quite successful. All right, we're going to take a quick break. We'll be back in a moment more from Miguel mckelvey, his decision to leave the company he helped found and what he's working on today. Stay with us. You're listening to how I built this lab. Hey, welcome back to how I built this lab. Miguel mckelvey cofounder of WeWork is our guest. So Miguel, you stayed on until I think June of 2020, when you announce your decision to leave, we work. That was like right at the thick of the pandemic, right? You were in New York, I think, and first of all, you had 6 months as sort of, you know, the 6 month period after Adam left kind of staying at the helm of the company in the leadership position, massive downsizing already, and then COVID happens, how did it affect the business? Well, first I'll say, I mean, that entire process of downsizing was incredibly difficult and painful and my heart goes out to every single WeWork team member who left the company at that time because it's just incredibly hard to go from the optimism and the view of the future that we held at the time to being out of a job. And I can't discount in any way. Any factors that affected people like that. So then add COVID to that, I mean, we were an incredibly social company. I mean, our business was to build these communities of members and so many of our team members were people who loved to be surrounded by people. I love being surrounded by people all day. That's just my way of being. So for all of us who were like that, it was just crazy hard. And then, of course, it also affected the business because people weren't coming in. And I think the hardest part for us was that we're a little bit different than, say, a big company with our headquarters, where they could just say, okay, well, we're going to shut down our headquarters all of our workers will be distributed and we'll figure it out. The position that we were in was that if we have one member who needs to come into the building to get something, whether that's a, who knows what, a FedEx delivery, or a hard drive that they left in their office, we absolutely have to be there for them because we can't lock them out of their place of work. And so it put us in a very complex position where it's like, well, the world is saying shut down the world is saying, don't be open, you know, if you're not essential, you should be closed. And we're actually facing this position where were the empowerment to all of these small businesses and entrepreneurs and it was very tough, very tough. Miguel, the story we works rise and then troubles has obviously been something of a cultural obsession, right? There's been a podcast. There's been documentaries. There's now an Apple TV series, have you been involved directly or indirectly with any of those projects? No, I haven't. And I think a lot of the reason for that was that I was always trying to make sense of it myself. And I don't really feel like participating in someone else's agenda was helpful to me in any way. So I really wanted to do a really, I guess, deep and thorough process of trying to understand what happened to me and what happened to those around me. And so, you know, rather than working on or with those projects, I actually went into my own way, which was working with multiple therapists and other practitioners that really figure out what happened here and what role did I play in it and how do I learn from it? And that's the way I engaged during that time rather than participating in all of that other craziness. How do you feel about being portrayed in a dramatization of your of your life? Well, the first thing I noticed is like the guy they have playing me is wearing a striped T-shirt and I've never worn a striped T-shirt like that in my life. So I'm a bit like, well, they got that part wrong, you know? It's weird. It's super weird. At first I was like, I'm not gonna watch that show. What's the point? It's all been said before. When I saw the trailer, it flipped for me a little bit, and I said, you know what? Instead of brushing it off, I said, I'm gonna watch it. And I'm gonna see what it feels like. And the thing for me is that, you know, what really hooked me was that I saw the things that I created and that our team created on screen. And when I saw the logo that I made, you know, wherever, way back in 2011, on this incredibly high production show, I said, there's something to that to my work to these things that I actually designed myself being portrayed in this way. And it.

"In the chase for your next milestone three thousand hits would look like not that long ago a milestone that would take close to a full season for cabrera to end up reaching. It ended up falling that season-long expectation six weeks before the the tigers last game and obviously miguel brera would have loved to have done it at home or in miami where he's from but that doesn't always happen so he hit his five hundred in toronto right and in all honesty. That really couldn't have been a worst plate better place. I guess you could say other than at home homemade at an in detroit or at omen miami. I mean it's pretty awesome. Would like he just missed hitting it. Wednesday night Or pat this past wednesday About a week ago now sending a fly ball to right field warning track off angels. closer russ rice l. a. glaze. And he he almost was able to do it at home and the and the tigers fans were all there watching him but unfortunately he wasn't able to get that one out but shohei ohtani said after that game back this past that past wednesday. I believe it was on the eighteenth of august He said show it said. Obviously he's a great hitter and one of the greatest of all time and he's a wonderful person i've dealt when i've dealt with him he so respected in the baseball world it i it would have been okay if i gave up his five hundred th homer personally. I want to see it happen soon. Cabrera emitted felt the pressure. You went eight homeless games after hitting his four hundred ninety nine home run in baltimore. He went four for thirty one cents. That drive when he stepped to the plate. Sunday with one out in the sixth and add a one to nothing. Detroit deficit grope last week. In detroit was tough. It was the first time in five six years. I see a crowd like that excited with a lot of energy. He said it was nice to see a lot of fans. It was nice to see energy backing comerica park. There was a lot of things going on in my mind. Because i want to do this in detroit but it's tough to hit a home. It's tough to hit home. Runs over there like it is. That's a pitcher's ballpark. It's really hard to get one al in in detroit it really is. That's there's a reason why like when you have when you look at the pitchers over there. They typically have lower eerie. Er just because it's it's tough ballpark to hit home. Runs in matt started them off. Though with a pair of ninety four mile an hour singers and with a one count they did try and change the speeds and try and get to cabrera chasing off the plate with the change up but cabrera's opposite field swing and swing. The he's been working on all you're trying to ingrain which the swing he said was inconsistent. It connected when miguel cabrera was asked if he thought it was gone off the bat. Cabrera said no. I don't think so when i hit it. I say come on get up. Get up something like that. But i play commerical. Parks every fly ball that too. That part is out. I'm glad i hit the fly ball there because if i hit it at comerica park. It's going to be two outs. So like i mean. It's like he's really happy that he was able to do there. And stack asked definitely back him up because that ball would have been an out in twenty seven of the thirty. Mlb ballparks commerical bark. As one of the exceptions the four hundred foot drive just cleared the fence and landed in the underbelly of the rogers centre with the tigers. Bullpen catcher. tim rims quickly retrieved it. It was cabrera's first home. Run in toronto since september ninth in two thousand seventeen. And oh my gosh. He is so so awesome. And we're gonna and we're gonna talk about his actual is actual career now Like just over not not just focusing on that home run. But now we're going to talk about his entire career. And miguel cabrera was born in maccarone aghuar state and venezuela to the choose parents. Miguel in georgina cabrera. Miguel cabrera was signed by the marlins in nineteen ninety nine as an amateur free agent in came up through the farm system. Teaming up with feature major leaguers adrian. He earned his way into the futures game during the all star weekend in seattle with gonzalez and he ended the bad at the end of the year. Batting two sixty eight with thirty extra base hits sixty six. Rbi's and distinguished himself as having the strongest arm. In the mid west league entering the following season cabrera was once again promoted but this time to the jupiter hammer heads of the class of the high class. "In seventeen fifty three miguel hidalgo e kostya was born near guanajuato mexico. At the time the name of the country was not mexico but rather it was called new spain because europeans from spain had settled in the area and claimed it as their own but most of the people living in mexico or from spain they and their ancestors had lived there long before the spanish arrived and conquered their lands. Miguel was the second son of cristobal. Hidalgo kosta ana maria gogga mandar via sin. Your miguel's dad was an ambassador government worker of the hacienda or town. When mcgill was growing up his family was fairly rich so he had it good easy life. He was considered to be a real person which means his ancestors were spanish. He had loving parents and fun with his older brother. Jose joaquin when mcgill was twelve. His father sent him and his brother to the city of viadana lead to go to school. Miguel studied religion and after completing a lot of courses on various religious topics. He became a catholic priest in seventeen. Seventy eight after he was a priest. Miguel hidalgo became known as father hidalgo. He returned to his hometown university to teach philosophy which means the study of how humans think and theology which means the study of god. Now the miguel was an adult and a priest. He was able to travel and meet people. He lived to learn and was particularly interested in european ways and thinking. This was not the normal path for mexican catholic priest and the eighteenth century most pre-state and their church area and spent their days praying. But miguel was too curious about the world and to social to stay in one place and not ask questions and learn new things. This is the best way to learn new things to be curious and asked lots of questions even though he was different for most priests at the time. Miguel became the rector of a church of san nicolas in seventeen ninety. Unfortunately though the other priests in the area did not like the way behaved so he was only in the role as rector for two years. Father hidalgo moved on to lead the churches in the towns of kalima and then send philippi torres smoke and later. Dolores besides stunning. He also grew grapevines and olive trees in the church gardens. Uganda pottery making studio or art area and taught himself to make pots. He had many hobbies to keep his life interesting. Father hidalgo was also very giving and showed compassion for poor people in the towns where he lived. Compassion means concern for someone suffering. He put on classes to teach the people skills they could use to make money like carpentry. Or woodworking and blacksmith thing which means to make things out of iron or metal and because of his interest in learning and philosophy father had dogs became very involved with a small group of educated people that lived in the town. They had gone to university and learn about politics and government and they weren't happy with the way that spain was controlling their country. Remember at this time spink controlled mexico and didn't let them vote or make their own decisions in eighteen. O eight a new spanish leader named joseph was put in charge of the spanish territories including new spain or father hidalgo. His friends lived the people there did not like the new rulers as they were mean and greedy so father had doggone his friends plan to remove the spanish rulers from being in charge the spanish rulers learned that there was a secret plot to take over so father hidalgo and his friends had to speed up their plans and dolores father hidalgo climb to the top of the church where he lived with all his might ring the church bell. This was the signal that their fight against the spanish rulers had began then he went outside the church and waved a banner of the virgin. Mary of guadalupe. This was september sixteenth eighteen ten and became a famous event of the greeter de dolores or cry of dolores. This was the beginning of the mexican. People's fight for freedom. Father hidalgo second in command was a military captain named agnosio day. Together they lead a group of krill and first nations men into towns and cities near where they lived. They gathered more and more in the towns and cities and slow. The size of their group grew with each town. They moved through. The group took control of the spanish government and replaced it with their own but unfortunately as the group grew bigger. So did its problems. Father had dog goes goal was to take power back from the spanish but the group of men that became his followers for more and more violent and the church was not happy about what they saw happening. They removed father had dogs from his role. As priest and member of the church. Michaela was no longer called father. Hidalgo anymore but that didn't stop him. From his mission of removing the spanish from power and his country michaela's followers continued to move through more cities until they finally arrived at mexico city the biggest city in mexico there. The spanish were ready with their army. Gunshots rang out. Smoke filled the air. A battle broke out between the spanish army. And miguel's army soon mcgowan is army had to retreat her move back to safety into a city called guadalajara. He formed a small government. The declared that they were in charge. One of the first things has government did was declared an end to slavery and promised return lands to the indigenous people. These were very modern ideas for the time. In january eighteen. Eleven mcgill and his men gathered at calderon bridge outside the city of guadalajara to meet a small spanish army for battle. The spanish army was well trained and well armed. Weapons were fired. The spanish had a better army and miguel and his soldiers had to run away after. This loss is friend. Captain lendvai became the new leader of the group of rebel fighters but some of the survivors of the battle followed mcgill north to join a group that was setting up in a city that is now known san antonio along the way they were captured by the spanish army. The group members were put on trial and found guilty of fighting against the ruling spanish. Miguel and his fellow soldiers had fought bravely but did not survive to continue fighting with their countrymen but the revolution that he started continued even after.

"Look at color. Just look at color colours. Perfect what are you gonna. I mean like who's going to you know maybe color relatively you can have some problems. Certain colors like don't what great together. But like you know what. I mean if you see shade of green you would it be out of your mind. If you're like look at that malfunctioning. Fucking color there you know. That's the that's the that's the story. Maybe that's the dim ear. It's just a bullshit story. Yeah yes saying. Yes to the moment as they say. Or what do you call it what we say in. Aa acceptance is the solution to all my problems. But i agree one hundred percent. But i also agree with carl jung and marketing and edward burne as and all that that what we are dunkin or miguel is a small fraction. Or we think we are in the rest of his giant iceberg of shadow. Material trauma complexes you know powers that be know this from edward as to steve jobs in marketing. And we all know you don't market to somebody's consciousness you market to their unconscious because that's who's making the decisions in life when we go shopping. Scientists said we have already made a decision. Five seconds before conscious mind has made the decision. They've tracked part of our brain so what we are is ultimately a construct and if this concert wants to enjoy the present fine. But i believe i want to understand the entirety of whom he is vast ocean of Unconscious just as i want to explore the mind of the true god and i think that's my goal is and that's why i respect narcissism because i'm not going to accept that this little fragment this thing this iceberg over the water is all miguel will ever be insane with duncan duncan is this divinity and there's so much going on yeah when you and your wife are fighting or meyer while i fighting. I think there's about forty people fighting at the same time. There's my wife when she was ten. There's me when i was fifteen. There's me who got hit by my drunken alcoholic dead. There's me who got rejected prom. There's my wife and her you know there's a lot going on. We are legion as we lead. Throw me in a fucking pigs please. Over the cliff. I'm ready says means. I think he's doing therapy are legion swarm. Oh miguel. thank you so much for this. I what a joy to to get to ask you all. "Low level disney. Where the thing trying to be disneyworld is never going to be disneyworld. But it's trying to be the creepy fair. Whatever that's what we're in now but this is something that i was thinking of and this is something that really gave me the chills. Have you considered or have the nas. Ticks written anything about the possibility that we are the dim urge. The reason we're here is not because we're soles. That have been trapped within matter but that we are the dragging thing and the only way to protect the rest of whatever. The rest of everything is from us is to keep us mesmerized and internally trapped with our own narcissistic interaction with our own identity. I mean what the hermetic say as above so below what happens in heaven corresponds on earth and philip k. Dick was the one who said. Yeah you may think of arkan's but we are the true arkan's we give our consent. We dilute ourselves. We project outward some of said the. You're just simply are human faulty way of seeing god. As soon as we change our attitude on what god is then we see the real god but of course that takes wisdom so that is definitely possible. I mean we could be. We could be. Maybe we sent ourselves down to play a role in a video game. You know our cells are up there. And we've said okay you're gonna forget miguel and dunkin are gonna forget who we really are and they're going to be down as meat sacks in this dimensional this video game on a podcast for point so that's another possibility well as still always tell people if you will these days when people ask nassir said sink of a simulation theory as elon. Musk and neil degrasse. Tyson said again. Nobody in western history really talked about simulation theory except the nostitz two thousand years ago and probably plato in with his allegory of the cave. And then change that too. And then mix that with cosmic horror lovecraft. What does it say. We're not alone in the universe but what's with us is far more powerful probably indifferent or made us in wants to eat us and if you step too far from the road if you explore too far if you ask too many questions go to high in the sky. These giant supernatural things these lizard people. These are guns. They're just going to eat you even if we're already they created us and we're already there food combine them and you've got a good model for narcissism except nas. Decision is not nihilistic. It's more christian ext existentialist we. It's almost hopeless. But at the end of the day we have the power if we wake up. But this is what i want. Really wanna get to. Which is that part of it. I'd be this. This is of all the of all the aspects of nozzles. Confused me the most. It's the noces part. this is it. Enlightenment is this is no says equivalent to eastern ideas of enlightenment. Well i mean. There are parallels between buddhism and ostracism. That's pretty apparent illusionary world. How the self is almost a noble reincarnation. A deep sense of introspection noces to start with is is somebody said wisely. It's not the result. It's what brings a result with neo. Takes the red pill that's it that's knows he sees the world as it is and morpheus says you're the one but he's still got to do the work you still have to do the rituals to bring about your divine spark in reconnected with the alien god. So that in communion you become fully divine and what's interesting. What miss what's misrepresented about the nas ticks. People say well. they're just spiritual bypass they wanted to do. These rituals and fly away to beyond the universe and commune with god and forgetting no. They want it to be transformed into fully humans to help the world one as one scholar calling us that we're christian body shot fas to be fully human is to be fully divine. The nonstick said. And you're not fully human unless you're down here helping others. They believed in healing. Good works trying to wake others up like you know. Hey man can you wake up. Let's let's let's do these rituals so no says you. I'd say the entire process but at the end of the day that feeling of ecstasy pure joy that's indescribable. That's there's no name for that. I mean salvation. I dunno somebody now. These rituals this is. I'm not familiar with any nas tick rituals. Or what does this look like were they. Were they taking. Some kind of psychedelic is key on the illusion mysteries. This wrapped up in it. Yeah good point if you look at. the rituals. Many are very similar to what we know of the mystery. Religions that idea of ego death like the freemasons where they bury you in a coffin. Or as you go down to haiti. I don't know if you've done your wasco but one of the first things about ayahuasca. Is that every fear. Every insecurity has gets thrown at your face a thousand times. You wanna die you feel like you are in the pit of a grave and these rituals by the nas ticks. Were like that. It seems that you're going down to hell. Demons are tearing you apart and you're able to withstand but it's all ego death it's your ego just being torn apart when it's completely torn apart than these rituals which they probably reenacted would send you up to heaven in through this star portal and in the rituals that we know there were joint moments. There was drinks Some church fathers said when the the nas stick like this guy. Marcus magician. He would put like some herbs and it will change and they would drink it and the women would just change their the there were stoned and so then you go through these rituals where you sort of awaken in their consciousness. Yeah there were there were consciousness or their bodies or cons. They were an state of consciousness. And then you would have these ecstatic flights again. When i did iowa sky did leave my body a few times and but you'll be armed with these passwords because to the nas takes. It was like a video game every level of heaven or the dimensions. Some of them had like three hundred sixty five dimension each ruled by narcan. You had to give this arc on your password or a magical word so you could then go and make contact with the supreme mind and come down and be more fulfilled or individual. It'd each time now. That's just one rituals cause some nas sticks as propose the nas sticks were so there was such anarchists that they divided into lodges something that the religion started with ancient egyptian priests who were kinda disillusioned with the roman empire who brought these ancient mysteries to like dissatisfied jews or pagans and they started talking and doing these rituals that's how narcissism started because the ancient ancient egyptian mysteries do have a lot of nonstick elements. And of course they added their own ideas but these the the important thing is some scholars of said in that confuses people is that first comes. The noces is like oh my god. I realized there's something wrong with the world. I feel something stirring. But what am i gonna do about it. Well i need to find the rituals or the people that can facilitate this noces. So therefore you have a very Group or Catalogue of ritual some nas. Ticks would do sex magic others would do sacramento practices in rome. Others would do Dancing or mystery..

"Miguel. I'm so excited to have you on the show. Thank you so much for being here how you doing. I'm doing great. Thanks for having me on you. Know is. I've been preparing for our conversation today. I find myself in a wonderful predicament. Which i have so many things i wanna ask you i. I don't know where to start. So i guess i'm going to start with the most boring mundane but i think essential question for folks. Listening aren't familiar with pasta system at all. Irv only vaguely heard of it. Can you give us an extremely brief history of nas decision. Because i'd rather get into the philosophy. And i know the philosophy and history intertwined but it'd be nice to have a little background to use the diving board that we're going to jump in to the subject from woo. Yeah that's Let's see the elevator pitch. I'm trying to sell you on these evil heretics two thousand years ago. That's whose philosophy seems very more relevant than ever. I'm sure as we'll talk about. I guess to start as a good baseline or foundation. We'll tell your audience. Think of the movie the matrix that right there is a modern pasta. Gospel of any of your audience likes philip k. Dick nostra's isn't hugely influenced. Him and of your audience likes the ideas of karl yune. You've gotten ostracism. Have you on something even more. Modern starting to realize a matrix matrix is getting kinda dated for like zuma's and so forth. But then think of the lego movie or the tv series westworld or the recent film bliss or something like that but in short the nas sticks were a movement that started or actually i would say gain maturity about two thousand years ago and Sort of branched out into two ways. One is the pagan her medics And the other is the christian mystics probably both started in alexandria egypt That great metropolis. Where all these ideas sort of student so much speculation. We got the neo. Platon is mystic hellenistic. Jews just coptic christians a great but the nas sticks really caused a stir in the nassan christian religion because they posited that we lived in a simulation as my friend gordon wide said the nas ticks. Say we lived in a false world because that idea definitely appears in the east here in the west. And i said no. The idea is not false. This is a faked world. We are trapped in a world it's been coded on purpose to keep us. Humans here the concept of the prison planet and we are here because of something that we have we have something call a divine spark as the nas ticks called a two thousand years call it the sold human consciousness and this sort of divine spark fuels the vary in some text the very universe that we live in and who trapped is here the nas ticks they had varying ideas. The hermetic really were more positive. That matter just fell in love with this divinity and brought us down and here we are sort of understanding each other. But the christian mystics had a lot of harsher grim they foresaw like there was this called pre cosmic cataclysm and basically in short as scholar. Stephen davis said godwin crazy and became us part of his essence mel into the universe and was coveted by these Solis mechanical beings that they call the damage in his arcand. And the nas ticks associated the damage. With the god of the old testament. Because it said there's no way this dude is the father of jesus. This guy is bad news but they also associated the. You're with other gods like zeus or saturn. Over cyrus and trapped our cosmic devine's are divine spark your to feed on us so us as humans. We had a duty or for some of us. Human the ability to wake up and realize that we had a shot of divinity assured of eternity within us and we could basically awaken this cosmic divinity like neo in the matrix taking the red pill and we could commune with this As they call it. God above god Some of the nas. Ticks called god above god abraxas. Who makes an appearance in the midnight. Gospel yes so this and so we could be awakening by the teachings and facilitation of this nas. tick reveal. lower. Like morpheus in the matrix morpheus. Job is to sort of help neo sort of get himself to becoming the one we can all become the one. The nonstick saw this nonstick reveal her as often as jesus didn't see jesus sort of saving us from our sins but waking up to our true nature to be able to escape the wrath of the arkan's here in this simulation but they had other nonstick reveals. Mary magdalene sophia simon. Mehta's some nas take saw. The buddha and zorro asteroids nonstick reveal irs and they could facilitate which you might call our noces. A central point of the nas sticks. Which is this direct experiential knowledge in connection with this god above god this higher consciousness but also would and also revelation of this false world that we are trapped in and this knowledge always seemed in their texts like this ritual this astral travel ecstatic ritual. One thing about the nonstick says they were ecstatic shamanistic movement. You had to bring yourself into an altered state of consciousness but at the same time it's also a mode of self knowledge. Self knowledge is very important as once again that scholar. Stephen davis said My salvation is the same as gods psychotherapy. If i save if i go in and touch upon my divine spark and get rid of all the deprogramming and the false layers of who i am and made contact with my inner god. It's the same. As of i took some shamanistic outer journey beyond the stars so no says was very important to the nas ticks. i think that's a good summary. And yet i'm breakdown to other things. Like divine spark reincarnation how they deconstructed techs other things you might wanna touch upon. But it's a it's a good summary of who the nas ticks. Were is the best summary. I've ever heard of narcissism. Thank you for the listeners. I know there might be a lot there for you to unpack like i think you probably gathered from it why i love narcissism and it will probably be perpetually confused by it. So here's a really blasphemous question for you and i hopefully after hearing your description of narcissism people even get the question you've heard of the game. Fuck mary cal. No i have not so. It's like fuck. Mary kill if you had these toys you had these people to choose from. Let's say donald trump the loch ness monster santa claus. You gotta fuck one. Mary one kill one. What do you pick you know. So fug mary kill the demi urge abraxas sophia. Which one do you fuck. Which one do you marry. Which one do you kill while you wanna fuck sophia. You.

"Whatever it's would you feel the same way or or is there something different about it being doing it to produce food. It is a bit different because you're working with live animals. You know it's not just the a product whatever you call it. It's you're feeding extra cows. They have to get milked. It's it's a lot more sense of responsibility and more important. I would say and food safety to. I guess i didn't think about that. Probably there are saw software systems and whatnot. "What's the next form that you're supposed to file. And what time do you file that. And where do you submit it and it should be this hard to just follow the rules and trying to do it right. The system is broken. What do you see the future on that here. Any good signs that that might be getting better or Politically it's still such a difficult. Yeah no it's. It's something that going to be solved overnight. Obviously yeah it's gonna take a couple of years if then to to fix that so even with all of that pressure and knowing that they're facing all this difficulty it was still worth it to your family to come here. I think so. Why why. Why did they knowing that they were facing this challenge. Why did they still want to do it. Just just I guess we just had hope. Yeah hope that We would have a better life here. Yeah because you know. Mexico's it's where i'm from. It's hard to find good paying job and then you have the the drug cartels down there too. Yeah it's really unsafe. So which one is somewhere. We're working be safe. Have a family not have to worry about somebody. Trying to mess with that totally. What did it feel like when you finally got all your papers. And that was all done and he didn't have to worry about it anymore. What did that feel. I it was. It was a huge relief I even got to travel. I have played for events parole. And i got to go to mexico in two thousand sixteen to see my family on ice. Yeah my dad's side of the family so that was just that was amazing just after not seeing them for so many years. Because that's the other thing if you're undocumented you can't know visit crazy. How many years has it been since you saw them So i was sixteen years. Sixteen years that you hadn't seen your family over there Crazy what was that. Like to walk in the door and see them again which is just got a shock on my spine. It was a it was great awesome. How much family do you still have in mexico quite a bit. Basically my whole dad's side. Yeah yeah and all his brothers and sisters and then obviously all my cousin. So it's yeah it's quite a lot. Yeah those two weeks weren't enough. I'm sure are you going to go back anytime soon. i would like. I'm hoping once this corona just goes away in get back to normal exactly so every day just computers and tech. Gogo yup for you. What's it like working with The employees on the farm. Do they like the tech. You know because a lot of people who have been around farms farmer's farm workers you. Those kinds of people aren't really in detect. Usually i know like my dad isn't too bad. A lot of people of his generation working on a farm. You just get it done the old way. Is that a challenge It is a challenge. Because you know most of them are not very tech savvy and just the language barrier because it's oliver softwares in english and everything so a challenge but little by little. We start teaching them. You know they start understanding once they really fully understand it. They love it because it makes their job easier. They have so much information.

"Updated. I mean no system is fully one hundred percent secure. The only way makes them just curious to lock in a closet power and the internet. That's a cure but then it's useless right so it's just trying to stay ahead of them. Stay stay ahead of the bad guy. Yeah yeah and that's what so many people have been telling me to. I remember even in college. It's like yeah. If your if your computer's hooked up to the internet like they can get really But i have antivirus software. That's not gonna which scared me and it still scares me. Because i don't know i'm not near smart enough to the kinds of stuff you do so did you. But you didn't work in farming right out of college did you. With that degree you were doing other things. So actually started working here when i was eighteen. Oh really yeah so. As soon as i graduated from high school i started. Cbc and So my stepdad. Such you the manager here okay. So he's the one that got me started here. And i was doing the dirty staff just basic. I was working three hours a day. Probably like hey you're in school for it and ever. Since it's kind of over the years kind grew into a full time position here And yet probably ten fifteen years ago. There wasn't enough work in. It farm but now with everything being controlled by something that's digital yep then it has to be. So what else do you do on the farm though you do. Just do that stuff or so. I'm starting to do eat somewhere. Like bookkeeping in the afternoons. Yeah kinda wanna transition into a new role as well expand my knowledge and learn other areas of the business as well so we're slowly working on that too just transitioning number to some of that you get to help with the cows or out in the field at all not very often. I guess the only time i would get thirty s like if like a feet truck you know the some have to work under the load cells took the wiring because i this what measures the weight right and you have to make sure it's accurate you. Could you wanna make sure you're feeding the right amount to the cows. So the actual truck that brings feed. The cows has scales. But you know how much they're six load sales and in that goes into an indicator and that translates electric signal into wait. So that's that's how you know how much you're you're feeding propen. Basically wow cow. So it's crazy. 'cause people talk you know we've talked on this podcast a lot about like making sure cows federate now have the right nutrients and super healthy and all that. But that's what makes that happen because all of that. Those good ideas are for nothing. If you don't know what's actually in the truck that you're bringing to the cows so it all rests on that and then when it crashes or a wire gets pinched or something miguel.

"Doing computer stuff. It stuff all the time here on the farm. Like what kind of stuff do you do. So basically manage all the software From dairy com which her management software dairy plan got the meter sore gates easy feed which the field management software we got the feet trucks. The mixers other devices in that the network all the computers the devices Even like security cameras got got to take care of that Or entrance gate. Security gate are feel system pretty much. Everything has a computer in it. I'm the when you call. It's a lot to keep track. How do you remember all. Because i'm sure there. They all work a little bit differently. Yeah a they all have their different programs so hover logged notebook. I keep down the issues. Have that day and i prioritize it so i know what happened to get done that day. Yeah so what's the biggest problem that you have to face like internet going down. I guess the biggest problem would be Like a software crash You know Those are unexpected. And they're usually like the toughest to resolve. You sound like you can just reboot the computer in your back to normal something we have to call like Support companies and. They have someone remote in if i can't solve and rice part of the worst and those really happened saturday at five pm just when you wanting to go home and have a good time and then you're stuck fixing and computer but it's better than having to get the wrenches out. Oh yeah that's for sure fix like a machine. What do you need all of this. It ellis tech for on a dairy farm. Like how does that fit. Because i think a lot of people think of dairy farming. It's like milking cows feeding cows harvesting crops. Like that's all stuff you do by hand tractors or but more more. There's a computer involved in just about everything on amar right. Yep what's the benefit of having all this computerized stuff what's the need for it. So the basic need is to make everything just a lot more efficient.

"It's Miguel Benz on a k a dog Scott Miguel we've sat on a patriot duck boat parade float together. Oh, yeah, we've done podcast together. So it's very great to have you back on the show. My friend loved loved your work Evan you killing you're killing. Thank you. I appreciate that. And and for those that don't know the story the media have a float or a a duck boat. I should say wage in in the parade every single time the Patriots won the Superbowl and Miguel and I were lucky enough to be on the duck boat following the win over the Rams and Super Bowl 53 that's definitely wage to five favorite experience. Yes on the beat Miguel and I know that you were pumped to be on there too. I'm I'm I actually like a fan I was like acting like a fan. I was going crazy. I was I was so happy. I've never thought it was one of the best days of my life the be on a on the the the be in the duck boat parade right in front of the players is just awesome sauce. So many fans come out I must have took over. 300 pictures, you know that day. It's it's awesome. It was awesome. It's I've said this before I'm I thought I was I've been more than lucky to see one live is Super Bowl winner winner have them see six in my lifetime is is more than anyone suspected. I just leave it alone like that. I I I was eating breakfast my mother the other day and I could hear in the restaurant some guy saying it should have 1:10. I'm like, I I don't know what you're thinking but the pictures are made it look so easy to win Super Bowls that somebody actually could say that they should have one ten and and but I'm not happy with sex. I think that's a good place to be happy with and yeah, I remember the beginning part of the of the parade. I tried to keep my cool tried to sell reporting. Orion professional and every opinion and not lose my mind but by the end of the parade the atmosphere just kind of took you over and everybody I think was was into it in terms of life and everyone I think came out a little bit there as the parade kind of went along and it was a day that I will definitely never forget. Right. They're up there with covering the Super Bowl in person was probably the best day of my life. So I'll put that as as number two, but it was very close number two, but we're going to sit here and and hash out. Hopefully the next Super Bowl champ for the page. It's obviously coming off a seven and nine season. They will not make the postseason. We all know that but Miguel we are having you on because you are the perfect guy to tee off the entire offseason and I think that everybody wants to start where we always seem to start with the Patriots in the offseason and that's what the salary cap especially after Bill Belichick's comments over the last couple of months saying that they were really a month. By the cap this off this past off-season and with the 2020 team, I think that the cab now is more part of the conversation than ever with Belichick putting that sort of thing in there as well..
