"Why, from the Annex Wealth Management Studios, This is Wisconsin's morning news. Here's your host, Jean Miller. Back in the saddle again. Good to see the crew. Last time we were all together. It was not here. It was at the golf course for the WTMJ Classic a week ago today doesn't feel like a year ago does that was that was a lot of fun. Good time, thanks to everybody who came out, participated all of our fans and partners and all of our teammates that were there too good chance to see everybody all at once, but no more living in the past. We look ahead to what's going on today. Janu did a road trip and we're going to hear the results of that road trip. You went up to Fox Valley, right, Nina? Neenah, Wisconsin Construction Company there, called Myron's Construction company has been holding an event called Built like a girl. For the last several years. They have, um girls who are going into high school on their on their job site and give them an opportunity to work with some tools. And drive a crane. Did you get to drive a crane? I did. Did you wreck anything? No. Because they had someone watching me. I didn't see anything online or in the papers all his gun and Milwaukee. Woman cousins green. They say Yeah, I know that that's again. Wait, Will you that will be coming up at 5 51 this morning. We're checking with Craig Gilbert as well. A new market University law school poll, just reinforcing what we know about politics in Wisconsin and most of the news. Is that good? He'll be live at 7 21 on the sporting front. The Reds and the Brewers renew hostilities still a big league for the crew, but no lead is big enough at this point in the season. Yeah, for sure. 7.5 games is what the Brewers carry into this three game series against the Reds, and it's It's exciting because they can maintain that lead and potentially stretch it out. It's also scary because if you have a bad series, all of a sudden it's down to 4.5 with a month to go, right, So it's another gigantic series an opportunity for the Brewers to Push ahead towards the postseason. Yeah, we get to that point now where I'm almost every game is going to feel like a playoff game. For the most part, the Brewers have a very tough stretch. They play a lot of contending team. I mean, you could be 25 games out, and that's certainly a worse position to be in a position we've been in in Milwaukee far too many times before, so I will take this 11 times out of 10 5 13 sports is next. "The first Midwest Bank State Street studio. This is w m. D P W S, a, D h D to Chicago, ESPN 1000 pinch. Weighing in a ball popped in the air down the left side, high fly ball near the line and over near the stands, and Dominic Smith will run out of room is that fades out of plane can be a tough time in the evening, twilight kind of settling in here, and I really had to concentrate. Keep the eye on. I think about the outfielder who's running dealing with the wind. A little bit bytes have not taken full effect yet it fortunately for dumb Smith, it was out of the field of playing. It's different when it's Between the lines and you lose it You're holding on for dear life. Here's the pitch swinging a bouncer foul third base, and then with banks off the railing, guards that camel well down the third baseline. Um, go over, pick that up and toss it into the stands. Nothing in two. Sanchez, who flied to center, his first time Oswald deals that's outside. It's a Yankee team that's made the playoffs each of the last four years, lost to the raise in five games in the division series last year, But 12 swang in a miss and a strikeout look like a change up pretty good one third with two down. Bring up Giancarlo Stanton Yankees leading three, Nothing or the last of the third single gas, Justin where to look up a number. So of course he didn't called up Sarah lines and, uh, we got the number because that's how it works. Right. He's smart man. First offering is in for a strike. So Giancarlo Stanton hit 59 homers in 2017. And then came the Yankees. So starting in 18, what percentage of their games he'll want. Is in for a strike have both Stanton and judge starting the same game. They played 466 games prior to tonight. Pitch foul tipped into the net of James McCann struck him out 40%. That's it. 188 of 4 66. We're at the end of three in the Bronx and the Yankees lead the Mets. Three Nothing. This is Sunday night Baseball on ESPN Radio and the ESPN APP presented by credit card..

You know, we've moved on from me pretty quickly like I'll see you right away Like Owen from Sam Donald to Ryan Tannehill. Like like, What is that? Engage thinking? My God. All right. Our first Mike McCarthy will be fired. Conversation will be in one week one. It's always weak one. Come on, Cowboys. Don't think this is gonna help. I don't think we'll have a conversation this year. The cowboy's gonna be good. Tampa Kissing. Looks like they're in week one. Let's say it's like I mean, just smokes him. It could be a high scoring game to take the over. Right. Let's say the cowboy defense. They're gonna be young. Not great. Tom Brady looks amazing. Everybody's back. They have a big party cowboys get absolutely annihilated. You don't think someone somewhere is gonna be like they've got to make a coaching change. I'll go with one, of course so much could be done. Take, but I don't think yeah, nobody says to me legit. But how many heartaches are legit takes when I lose the first game, people gonna say he should be first. Why? I said we want, especially because of who they're playing on the stage. "The first Midwest Bank studios in downtown Chicago High doing this morning, Brian. I'm wearing my pet Boyle Hawk sweater and I won't be first in line to get in the United Center for the game. So how about that? Just in time, Toc the boys wrap this this season off What better way than that better. That's true. That's true, would like to have seen it a few weeks ago when they were taking on Nashville and, you know, kind of the season was hanging in the balance there, but it will be great to finally see some fans. 1901 West Madison tomorrow Mother's Day Night and on Monday, by the way, I think tickets are still available. Go to Blackhawks. Calm for that slashed tickets. Do you think that'll bring some energy to this young? Blackhawks lineup here is they finished things up against the Dallas Stars? I would think so. But I would hope that because they are young hearts, they would bring their own in energy. And I know Jeremy colleges talked about that, and We've seen it at times and we've seen them in the last couple weeks. Not bring the energy to start games, which is a little bit concerning for me, but We always have to remind ourselves how many are playing their first games their first season and how many teams the league are like the Hawks. What such a youth movement where you just injecting every since, like every game, someone's making their NHL debut. It really was the story of the season and it's the youth movement. They said that it was going to be about player development. It's going to be about giving young players opportunities and high leverage situations and they delivered on that. Nine players made their NHL debuts this year. Eight players scored their first NHL goal with the Blackhawks this year every night. There were seven to sometimes nine first year players and then they were sprinkled in with 2nd and 3rd year players. It was By and large First through third year players along with the brink. It Cane and Duncan Keith and maybe kinda Murphy and, uh, don, but everybody, I mean, it was. It's a young team and for the first half of the season They surprised the NHL. They went what? 13 7 and five They had a stranglehold on the four seed. They had a 10 point lead on Nashville. And then here, the last 30 games. They've only 1 10. So is it the rookie wall? Was it A favorable schedule early on it was it teams figuring them out that I'm sure a lot of that plays into it. But at the end of the day is the rebuild. And you put this this Twitter poll question out. Is it ahead of schedule? Is it on schedule? Or is it behind schedule? I would have to say it's it's ahead of schedule. I I think what I saw this year and the young players that emerged on a consistent basis. Like the Brandon Hagel's of the world. Show me that They are. Key components to what could be a championship team down the road. Now they still have a lot of work to do. They have to sure something's up defensively as well. We'll get into that a little bit later on Mark Lazarus from the athletic Charlie Mellie Otis. From NBC Sports. Chicago will join us. We'll break down the season will look forward to what's gonna happen here in the off season. But how did you vote on that? Where do you think the rebuild is that Brian? I think ahead of schedule but with the caveat that again against teams with winning records and against the top teams of the division You really didn't have much to show for yourself and you know that's going to be the litmus test or or the bar. They after judge yourself against your ways away, right? But That said, You've got a couple prospects in Europe. It should be over here next year that you have high hopes for. They still need more size. We talked about that weekend week out here on the hockey show, My Cartman. I liked what I saw from him the other night. I mean, And Jeremy Constant said. They're crying for size and physicality, so they need to get more of that pet. But You're just looking at the NHL dot com listed to the top 250 fantasy players. Based on past performance and overall upside for next season. You know, obviously you're going to get Cain checking in a 13 Yakub. A leak of first ought to drink. It's 42 on the list of the 250 Kubelik. 1 31 Doc to 22. Tapes isn't on the list because he hadn't played this year. I assume that's why but you know you have Lincoln at 1 54 are other Twitter poll question is What he expected. Who will be the number one goalie going into next season? Because also, hold onto your hats this week has been all about Delia. Yeah, And you know what? What a story. It was for him to finally get this opportunity. He comes in relief on Monday night. And halfway through that game and goes 19 for 19. Starts on Tuesday and then gets the win on Thursday, and I thought he was fantastic on Thursday night, so it's going to be interesting. You know Kevin Lincoln and started this season off. Was not only in the Calder Trophy discussion, hey, was in the visitor trophy discussion halfway through this season and then Went on that six game road trip. That's where he struggled. That's where this team struggled. And, uh, you know, he found himself. I think here the last few weeks of the season, it'll be interesting to see I would imagine calling Delia will get the start tomorrow night against Dallas. And I would assume they will give the final start to Kevin Lincoln in an opportunity to play in front of the United Center fans on Monday night, But are you You think you're overreacting to what you saw from Colin? Delia, Do you think we're We're overreacting to what we saw from from Kevin like it in the first half of the year. Where do you stand on the future of the crease here in Chicago? Well, I'd like to think it's a good problem to have. If Delia has emerged, I mean, You know, you can say it's an overreaction in a short sample size small sample size, but the guy I've been out for 3.5 months. And to come in in the middle of game and stop on 19 shots and then look at the high danger chances he had Thursday night in the first period alone, 11 I mean it terrific stop right, And so you like to have competition at that spot. And I like the way you're thinking. I think he's going to start tomorrow. And I think Lincoln and certainly is earned the final start in front of whatever crowd you're gonna get the United States Senate in the final game because he has been You know, he's been a nice revelation this year when you didn't even know he was in the mix. Really? And he ended up being the star work between the pipes. So what do you think of the rebuild is that I had a schedule on schedule or behind schedule. Who do you think will be in nets starting for the Blackhawks? Next season and.

"I know it's easy to be a Monday morning quarterback, but he brought up a good point when we first discussed it on Monday where he said, if you're if you're Aaron Rodgers, why do you not go over to Matt the floor and demand that he gives you the ball in that moment? After that, third down play when it seems like there was miscommunication, Why not take that moment and own it and say, Give me the damn ball? Is that what we want great players to do? Whiny Keyshawn, The only guy that says, Give me the damn ball. I think that you've got that trademark. But, you know, I think the issue with that was your coaches have to make those decisions. That's what they're there for. I think it's the communication and making sure everybody's on the same page because after the game Erin mentioned he thought there was four down territory. I think everybody in the stands thought it was gonna be poured out territory. But when you didn't get any origin was 4th and 8th a map. The floor made that decision, And if there's not a pass interference call, it would have worked out. You've gotten the ball back to your quarterback. With a chance to go win the game with just a touch down, so I understood it. You don't have to agree with it. But as far as Aaron goes, I think every player wants the ball wants a chance to make that play. Especially somebody as great as Aaron. You're gonna want that opportunity now. I don't know. He mentioned with unpacked Max yesterday. You know, they kick Mason and the entire special teams have come out then you'd have to use a time out. And that changes the whole dynamic. So I'm sure in his mind he was taking. Let's go for this, but you also have to say You can't burn a time out. There's a lot of other dynamics that go into that. There's no doubt it's been a complicated relationship between the floor and Roger. Since it began, it has been wildly wildly successful to the tune of 13 and three in both seasons Floor's been their NFC championship. Both seasons. The floor has been there, but Aaron Rodgers. It's seemingly not enough, and I think most people tend to agree he needs one more chip. Mark 11 chip himself. You can hear him on will deign Tash on ESPN. "Carm, there's gonna be a limited amount of opportunities for each individual to make the biggest impact in the play in the game that he can with those plays that are going to be there for him to make. You need to capitalize last week, Balls hit defender's hands going straight to the ground problem. You can't let that happen this week. Okay? Capitalized on your opportunities. When you have a chance to make a play, Please go about the business of making place. And those are the keys to a bears victory at the Superdome Bears there yesterday. Those were written out by the way. Those were great keys. I love this 73 37 thing. By the way, it's gotta happen. Carmine needed 73 37 it. Zack lost. You mind if I ever get the coaching boom on the throw that down there like that? 73 37. We have to score touchdowns. We hold people the field goals, right? Dann Wieder are friends said Done deal done deal, he said. He just asks that he come in studio in the summer when he can work on his own base town. We don't want to see the pasty games. Yeah, no, I think it was like December when he did the last time you know, years ago, Dan Wieder declared on our show, he said, Guys, listen, They're not. It was August, he said, because they're not getting cool Mac, he said. If the Bears trade for Komac upcoming I'll do the shirt. The show with my shirt off in the first Midwest Bank states first Midwest Bank State Street studio. Easy for me to say and so sure enough, they, of course acquire Cool Mac and Dan paid off the bed like that. You're acting like I said it was in December. A couple years ago, Dan came in. Took his shirt off, sat downstairs with us in the studio right there in the window, and people were walking by going Weiser guy without his shirt on in that studio and someone on Twitter said. It's very easy guys get Dan did declare I'll do another show with no shirt on if the Bears trade for Watson, so he said, done deal. This one is to me even more unlikely than the Bears acquiring Hello, Mac, And I thought that was unlikely. This is A million to one shot. If you ask me, I just think they're too many things that go into it. And the Texans, quite frankly, would be nuts. I don't care how upset he is. Would be nuts to trade to Shawn Watson. Don't think it's gonna happen. You're a couple more things since we're on your keys, and then I want to highlight of something if we have time here, too. I just want ask one more thing since we brought a leader and he had mentioned yesterday in his visit with us that you know the Saints play a lot of man. I think the Saints played more man purse snapped than any team in the NFL this year. This is like that kind of defense better suited for taking away with the Bears like to do so much with their little sort of boot action with Mitch right now, get him out sort of cutting the field in half. Does that matter? One way or another. Is it easier for Mitch to diagnose? Zone and make plays off that is it harder against manner does not really matter. You're talking about bootleg actions. Specifically, bootleg action is predicated upon being able to run the ball. If you can run the ball, whether they're in a man in his own, you should have a chance to go ahead. Lost somebody to sleep. Okay, You should be able to all right now, as far as the man defense in a zone When you get an overreaction in his own to a run, it creates natural voids and windows in his own. So I'd say Be easier. Easier to run that bootleg action. You know that that kind of reverse action where you taking three receivers one into the flat, tight and crossing and then a wide receiver even is the deepest crossing your third option. I think that would be easier against his own that it would be against the man. Okay, but it's not impossible against me, All right? And then there was a lot of mandible. Yeah, You've got to be able to run the ball can't run the ball. I don't think it's gonna make a difference. We're gonna run in the ball, one of the all time great NFL playoff highlights. Is 10 years old today, 10 years ago today It was one of those weird situations. We're going to see it this weekend. Seven. I want to say it was Pete Carroll's first year in Seattle. It might have been maybe a second year. Seven and nine. This is pre Russell Wilson. Remember, this is 2010 to 2010 seasons. So this is 2000 January, 2011. A seven and nine Seahawks team wins a bad division and hosts like a 12 wins Saints team or something. Drew Brees and the Saints and Champagne to the Saints. They go to Seattle. The 12th man is rocking. Seattle wins the game. Matt Hasselbeck throws four touchdowns, but the true highlight The Beast quake it Moved the Richter scale. The crowd was so loud That U S Geological Department. Whoever does that survey registered something on the Richter scale. We call it the beast quick. Crowd silent now, as opposed to when the Saints had the ball. Look at this one quarter run. Marshawn leads still on his feet,.

"Assistant coaches with us on the first Midwest Bank hotline. Darvin Good afternoon. I don't know how you guys doing Good. Hey, I want to start with a question about a guy. We don't talk a lot about Bobby Portis. Double double for Portis last night 16.7 of 11 from the field 10 boards. What is Bobby Portis his role on this team. You know, just to come back, come off the bench and provide that scoring points for the second unit and values a versatile player. He's someone that can play alongside Gunness and You know, basically everyone, that's enough starting lineup so being able to acquire him get by our reserves again. Part of the ingredients of having the championship ball club is You know, you know you started your sorry five has to be you know, well equipped to compete the fan scores. You need that as well off your bench and hey, definitely fits that mold. Darvin, you put in the wrong era, man. You used to be out there hoisting threes. If only you came around a little bit later. Yeah, man. It would have been great, but I'm right where I need to be right now, at this moment, feeling good and then healthy with a good team. There is a lot of new faces here, and that was a big question I had going into the season at what point would it look like this team is starting to click? It certainly feels like from an offense of perspective. The chemistry looks like it's developing rather quickly. Yeah. You know, we've been blessed in that in that regard. We knew it would take some time with, you know he's being nontraditional circumstances due to the pandemic, where Normally, guys, we have the opportunity to play in different programs and who have opened Jim Precursor into our training camp. But none of that was able to happen this year. So I'm trying to you know, we had a few different birds with one stone in terms of Trying to get these guys, you know, conditioning, upto quality level trying to implement our system. We change the bar, spacing a little bit and also get the new guy's acclimated to the team and the different attitude tendencies that they would have to know that they teammates who've already been here possesses and One of those things where you know it's a work in progress, and we were happy that we have enough talented players that were able to win as we're learning on the fly. But we're quite pleased with where we are right now, Darling, What's your role with a guy like DJ Wilson, who's minutes are inconsistent. He has weeks where he does have spurts and flashes and then weeks where he doesn't play quite as much What's your role with a guy like that? Who's minutes are a little less consistent than other players. Well, you do have to encourage those guys keep playing to keep working. You know, you never know. You know, God forbid, you know Andries happened. Different things happen all the time that that change changes up the rotation and individuals were implemented into those rotations. So the biggest thing is for him to continue to be a pro continue to work hard like you done the whole time. You know, our coaching staff has been here. He's a great kid. He brings great energy to the team. He's all whether he's on the court or not. He's always on the sidelines, supporting this team and giving them feedback on what he's saying from the bench so because me and will continue to do what he does, and You know, hopefully at some point, you know he'll be able to get on the floor and really help us But he's helping us and a lot of different capacities right now, as it stands, and you know, hopefully one day you'll get a chance to really be active out there on the course. No, darling, if you can best describe the last 48 hours and what we've seen around the country and here in the state, how has that affected the team? I mean, if this is, you know, based on, you know, our team being predominantly African American. We have a lot of African Americans within our organization and that front office who's coaching staff. Sadly, man just realized that you know, here we are in 2021. You know, we're still seem to be functioning within a Jim Crow system on bond. You know, we're all human beings first. And the just the lack of empathy, the lack of acknowledgment of the longs that been done specifically the after American people and and more specifically in regards to our dealings with the police. The white police specifically, you know, it's It's saddening, um And that's a tough job. It's tough on both sides because they have to protect and serve and they have to make life changing decisions on the fly. But having said that We really need to have would have you need to have a coast. Uh, laser like, focus conversation about policing in general, um, different procedures. Uh, scenarios and, you know, a guy gets shot walking away from the police officers. Shot in the back seven times Square lives in front of his kids. You know that those type of things should not be happening and it regardless of who's wearing the badge, you know that comes down the bath releasing, and then You fast forward to, you know things have happened in with our government. Everyone did a great job coming out, making their vote counts and, you know, Still, there's a stronghold that wants to see someone that's been very divisive and separating people within this country remained in office. So we have a lot of work to do. And you know, I'm definitely ready to do my part. But It's just said this hardening and hopefully things will get better. He is Buck's assistant coach. Darvin Ham. "D. C. B for a lot of years, used The Journal Sentinel's Washington bureau chief. He is Craig Gilbert joining us live on the first Midwest Bank hotline on WTMJ. After a day like none we have seen in modern history. Not since 18 14 when the British dropped a match on the capital, If we seen an invasion like we saw yesterday is Congress was set to do the perfunctory ratification of electoral College votes. Craig Gilbert, Were you surprised by what you saw yesterday? Sure. I mean, you know you can look back and say, Well, you know, we should have seen the signs. We knew this crowd would be there. If you're following social media, You know, there's a lot of kind of radicalism out there. Um Yeah, but you know, it's kind of unthinkable to think of to imagine. Um you know what a large crowd of people storming into the capital sun think about a couple of many levels, But one of them is just the idea of the capital could be breached like that. And also the idea. You know people like me who spent time I haven't been to the capital in months because of the pandemic, But I've spent a lot of time in the capital a times on a daily basis and people that have worked there whether you're a journalist, a member of Congress. Staff member, You know, people have a reverence for this building on You, you the fact that wild stuff Happened yesterday. And things kind of went haywire is not in itself a shock, but But what actually happened last night was a shock. Yes, well, and I think shocking to Craig is that the Capitol Police just seemed so woefully under prepared for this. Yeah, And you know there's gonna there already. You know, people, I mean, people are raising that question. There's gonna be investigations. This is going to be looked at really hard. I mean, we're seeing a lot of different video. You know, Some people are seeing the video and say asking, you know, um, You know, the police seem too friendly with the protesters, and then you see other video where they're just overwhelmed and threatens, um, and it's just Going to be a job to sort through, Um particularly, you know, the sort of failure to anticipate a threat on this scale. When we all knew again, the grab was gonna be there. I think part of it again is a failure of imagination. The fact that You know, Probably people couldn't imagine. Um, again, the building actually being stormed. Journal Sentinel's great Gilbert is live on the first Midwest Bank hotline, not WTMJ. 13 days from today, where we saw that mayhem where we saw that chaos in that same spot, Joe Biden is to raise his hand and take the oath as president. How is that ceremony? Gonna look, we already it was to be reshaped by covert. But after what happened yesterday, can they even execute an outdoor inaugural without having to worry about something untoward happening? Well, I mean, I get into the whole question of okay, This has happened. And I think the nation you know, by and large has, you know, recoiled in horror. But what What else happened? I mean, you know, people are wondering if versions of this can happen in state capitals around the country. Um, you know what happens when Joe Biden becomes president. And what form do these demonstrations and in this case, it was a riot. Not a damn it. Stop the demonstration. What? In what form to these? Things take. You know when Joe Biden is president Ahn do so. That's all you know. These are. This is all part of you know, it's all uncharted, obviously. And, um, you know, we can only hope that you know. It institutionally will be prepared for this and that on, but it doesn't You know, it doesn't take on the worst forms that we saw yesterday. Briefly. Craig only have you for a little bit longer. But what happens to the Republican Party moving forward after yesterday? Does this change anything? I mean, we've got some people disavowing their their party memberships and cases, others. You know the question where this thing is going. Yeah. I mean, we've seen this sort of cascading series of events during the Trump presidency. And many of these events you know, have prompted the questions like the one you just asked. I think this was a tipping point for some people, But you saw this really? Big sort of contrast between the Senate and the House in terms of the Republican caucus and how they handled the question, particularly after the riot how they handled the question of whether to try to overturn the election results in some states and only six and seven senators in the case of Pennsylvania, Arizona voted in the end, six or seven Republicans. The vast majority of Republicans voted against overturning the results, and many Republicans were openly condemnatory of the president in language they've never used before. And the House strong majority of House Republicans, you know? Followed through with their votes to overturn the popular will of voters in Aaron and these two critical states and so in the house, you see a different, you know, kind of Republican party and so going forward, we're gonna you know, we have sort of those two examples to ponder if we think about Kind of where the Republican Party goes, I was you know, I was stunned by the language that some high ranking Republicans used against President Trump. I mean, it wasn't whether stunning and some level under the circumstances, but it was language they've never used before. So this is going to be a big open, critical in fascinating question to watch going forward. Journal Sentinel's Craig Gilbert Live on the first Midwest Bank hotline. A belated happy New Year, Sir. Thank you so much for your time, and I hope we call on you many times is needed through the rest of 2021. Absolutely. Take care of, say, 27. Steve's graffiti is next this week on WTMJ.

"In Kenosha last night after the D a rules that there will not be charges filed in the Jacob Blake shooting. Tony Bedrock of our staff was there both in the summer for those protests, and he was also there again last night. Tony joins us live. The first Midwest make hotline on WTMJ, Tony. Thanks for getting up early forced, I guess. First question obviously is comparing contrast what you saw last night in terms of intensity crowd size everything and contrast that with what you saw this summer. Good morning, Jean. I think definitely last night. We didn't quite see the numbers that you're used to seeing in August, which was maybe in the hundreds of thousands last night, just a couple of dozen people in the immediacy of the decision. Still had people marching through the streets, led by members of Jacob Legs. Family is most specifically his uncle and his message was the decision was felt like a slap in the face. He wanted people not to get this courage because of the decision. Leading them through the streets marching really the message saying that their fight is an over. They plan on taking this to Kenosha and beyond. He mentioned that they plan on leading marches in Washington, D. C. We're about mid month. You really take their message to the elected leaders. That's November because they're not giving up yet. Tony. I'm curious. Do any of his supporters. Jacob, like supporters acknowledged that he had had previous run ins with the law. He did have an outstanding warrant. Not that this justifies what happened to him. I'm just wondering if that is ever acknowledged. Not in any of the messaging that we see that will be taking it through the streets coming together. Really? They focus is completely on the blame of father's arrest in Chesky they wanted charged with attempted murder. They said he had no right doing what he did, and it's really just kind of Emphasizes a systemic problem that they continue to see. Is that really in the messaging that we here and it's really they keep the focus on what the officer did wrong, as opposed to Won't take a Blake might have done wrong. WTMJ is Tony Bennett is live on the first Midwest Bank hotline on WTMJ. Tony. What was the police president presents like Were there any counter protesters? And it seems some TV interviews with some of the folks on the streets last night. He said that they were sure that there were members of the proud boys watching them last night as they were protesting. I don't know how they would know that, but That's what the some of these folks were saying. Did you see any counter demonstrations or anything like that? I didn't see anything. Get intense degrees A couple times in August Won't mainly the people I was Following is it seemed like they were walking through the streets. They had police presence. I guess you could say, just controlling traffic a couple blocks down. They get my cars and tried a corner off or follow blackout traffic so that these protesters could take it to the streets. Close to the Civic Center park. That's where a lot of these demonstrations kind of got heated in August. You see some onlookers, people standing by vehicles, but as far as anything face to face your intensity with protesters and counter process, there's nothing of that. Like Things relatively calm has opposed earlier this summer. Team chase. Tony Bedzyk was there in August for the protests in Kenosha. He was there again last night watching the demonstrations. Peaceful ones last night in Kenosha, Tony. Thank you so much for sharing what you saw. You're welcome. You bet a 25 wtmj. Steve's graffiti is next, Your Milwaukee.

"Um, but the other thing is, you know, we we need to continue to watch it. You know, nobody's crystal ball works very well and we don't we can't predict we can't necessarily predict the future. Except that we could say very reliably something Something will change. Um it's interesting because we got to one of the questions that came in on the text line. From the 262 says, Can you ask Mary to help me understand what messenger RNA is? And how it works in the cove? It 19 vaccine. Can you give us a little vaccine one on one in that respect? Of course, Okay. When yourself. Or a virus that infects yourself needs to make more of itself or your cell is just doing the business. Let's just go with the virus infected, so let me go with the simpler I lied to start start my explanation again and make it very streamlined and simple. Um, and you probably remember this from high school biology. When you're sat when, when a virus infects a cell. It grabs this the machinery of the south and uses it to make more of itself. Or virus can replicate. In this case. It's just the m R N A, which is the link between the genome of the virus or the genes of the virus. And making proteins. In this case, it's just messenger RNA that codes for the spike protein on the virus. Despite protein is that maybe the dominant part of the virus to which our immune system makes an immune response? Should you get the infection? So this spike protein M. Marny, which gets ourselves to make The spike protein itself and it justice, the protein. And then your It'll get displayed on the cell that takes up that Emma Rene when it's given as a vaccine. And our immune system will recognize it as a foreign protein and essentially make an immune response to the virus without the virus ever even being there. And then the M Arnie just gets degraded and goes away and you didn't have an immune response to something to which you have never been infected with. Mm. Amazing How many of those terms you're right. You do have flashbacks Toe high school biology Classic. Oh, that's right. M r n a the little lamb and then her name. Yes, Yes, a little. And then Eric exactly it and you know it. It is the last active biology remarkable. Dr. Mary Handy. Joins US professor of pharmacy at UW Madison, the pharmacist herself, and she's kind enough to spend a couple of segments with us so A quick break When we come back, Mary, I'll toss a couple text questions your way as well. Um, then I have a question about if if this is going to be And annual shot. I mean, is the coronavirus shot going to be like the flu shot? It's that time of the year, Everybody get your flu shot. Get your coronavirus shot, Or is this Ah one and done. Deal. We'll get to that. And why it is still going to be very important to wear a mask. Even after you get the vaccine Doctor Mary Haney, our guests for a little while longer here on Wtmj stick around. So back to the first Midwest Bank hotline. Our guests this hour, Dr. Mary Haney, pharmacist Professor Pharmacy at Madison. Okay, Mary. I had this question thrown at me, and I was one of those room like you know what? I don't know. For sure. It seems like an obvious question. But I never considered it. Maybe it was so obvious. I haven't given much thought. Is this gonna be a one time deal? Like I'll get the vaccine whenever it is. You know that that my turn comes up, hopefully in 2021 on and then I don't need it again. Or is it going to be like a flu shot? Where It's just an annual and annual occurrence for the rest of our lives. Okay? The answer to that question is we don't out and won the first. The first problem. The first question that needs to be answered in order to be able to answer your question is how long this protection from the vaccine last And we can't speed up time. It's in the plan to follow people on their and their protection that is confirmed by the vaccines. You know the people who put perspective in the clinical trials well, though we continue to follow and to see if their protection wanes. On then the second question is really back to. The question we've already talked about is mutations or changes in the virus that escaped vaccine, the vaccine protection convert, so we need to answer both of those questions in order to be able to answer your question about Am I going to need to get the vaccine again? So those things will be will be studied. And we have people looking, you know, examining and trying to answer those questions so well, No, but we don't know the answer right now. Kind of related to that nine Tuo texture says when it is said, You know, reports in the news that there are so many doses of the vaccine does that include the second dose that a person gets? Because we do know everybody who gets it is gonna need a second dose. Does that include the second dose, and when somebody does have their first dose is the second dose. Like already set aside for them. The answer to that question. The Question about how many doses is all about. We need everybody needs to. So when a ninja visual is vaccinated, the second dose is set aside. Yes. So everybody who gets as you get as you get vaccinated. That's how it how it how it's done. You get your first dose of your guaranteed your second dose, so please go back and get it. How long in between again about the fighter vaccine is 21 days and the Madonna vaccine is 28 days. So either three weeks or four weeks and most and immunization providers, people who are vaccinating will essentially try to set you up to come back making appointment to come back for your second dose. They'll give you a card. Tell you when to put that when to put that on, Take a picture of it. So if you happen to lose if you're not going to keep in track the paper you can keep track of your phone. Take a photo of that card so that you have ways to remember when to get back to your vaccine. Get it in your calendar. Because we know that protection from two with two doses that vaccine is really good. It's like when I go to the dentist, and then before the hygienist lets you leave. She's like, Would you like to make your six month appointment Now? You go sure, And she writes it on the card. She hands you the card. You stick it on the refrigerator. Huh? That's exactly what we're gonna do it. Remember this is it six months You only have to keep track of it for three or four weeks. Right? Right. So it's you know, it's it's a pretty quick, pretty quick turn around. And you know, as as I was thinking about it yesterday, or if I could think about it today, I guess it doesn't matter when you know there's people already. Who are really getting close. There were about a week away here in Wisconsin from people getting their second dose. Um, I came across an article. I forwarded it to you this morning. I think it was from ABC news some of their medical staff, and it was entitled why you still need to wear a mask after getting the covert 19 vaccine. The layout about you know, six or seven different reasons why you have to still wear the mask during And after vaccination, But why is that important? Even after you get the shot?.

What to watch for in the first Biden-Trump debate

"Debating Democratic presidential nominee drove by in their first face to face in the campaign, joining us live on the first Midwest Bank hotline. CBS NEWS White House correspondent Peter Mayor Peter Thank you for joining us from what we understand Joe Biden's been holed up with his briefing books and doing Mark debates in such President Trump Not quite as intense in terms of preparation from what we understand it is that is that true? Has he been boning up? Yeah, That's what we're hearing from the correspondents who are covering both sides. You know, Jean, this is the 2020 World Series of politics, but you know there's a pool every day, but the one that caught my eye is a political morning council pool that says 86% of voters say their minds are made up on who they're going to vote for it and just 14% say their minds could be changed. But you know that could be very crucial number and you have to know that both of these candidates are going to have Wisconsin on their minds. On that debate stage over in Cleveland, Peter what is the best way for the candidates to go about it? The president will tell his achievements. Joe Biden will talk about what he would do going forward. Yeah, You know, I think, Jane, you nailed it. There are risks, though. For both of them. Biden's going to need some thick skin to stay focused in the expected face of harsh attacks by the president on Biden. Sons, hunters foreign dealings with Now you have these New New York Times revelations that cut into into that, you know, saying that Trump was heavily involved. At least his businesses were heavily involved in in links to Russia. Biden allies would tell you that he can't afford to let those kinds of attacks on his son set him off. They hope by will stay focused. Above all. They hope he won't lose his cool. If Trump goes for the kind of personal insults that he likes CBS NEWS, White House correspondent Peter Mayer joining us live on the first Midwest Bank Highland Peter, There has been this Back and forth about President Trump saying that Joe Biden is on performance enhancing drugs. He wants a drug test and that Joe was slow and other things and Joe Biden saying, Come on, let's just go. You know, I'm ready for him going to show you how slow I am point being that President Trump has set the bar very low for Joe Biden to the point where some experts were seeing if Biden It is just merely average. He's going to look great in the eyes of some voters who maybe haven't made up their minds because again, the expectation set by the president is so low. You know, I've been covering these debates Jean going back to the Reagan era. And I can't remember the expectations being set this way by one candidate against another in Trump may have set a trap for himself by constantly raising doubts. About Joe Biden's mental state and jabbing it. Biden with Sleepy Joe tag, So the question over the debate stage tonight will be did Donald Trump lower the expectations on his opponent's performance? In this crucial face off. After all, Biden served eight years of VP. You know, he's had 30 years of Senate debates more than 30 years and and then all the debates he had this year, so You know, Biden has to be on his game. That's for sure. Tonight. Too Blunt these attacks from Donald Trump's Peter Fox News. Chris Wallace is going to be the moderator for tonight's face to face. And he says he is not going to be active is a fact checker during the debates, But how important is it for him to keep both of these men on time and to cut them off if they're not answering the question? Oh, I wouldn't want to trade places with my friend Chris, would you, Jane, You know it. Answer your question. I think it's very important. And as we saw in the 2016 Trump Hillary Clinton debates You know he His tactic is to constantly interrupt and try to keep his opponent you know, off off their topics on DH. Speaking of topics, Chris Wallace chose the topics for tonight. The pandemic, the economy of the Supreme Court, integrity of the election, race and violence in cities that hits home for Wisconsin and so many other places and the Trump and Biden records. So the candidates, of course, they're going to try to choose their own topics, a cz they go at each other. CBS

Summerfest announces new three-weekend format for 2021

"New announcement. About what Summer fest 2021 is going to look like and we're joined right now. In the first Midwest Bank hotline by summer fest, CEO Don Smiley, Don. Good Afternoon. Good afternoon, Jeff. How are you? I am Well, thank you. Okay, Let's talk about the big news. What Summer fest. 2021 is going to look like and then we'll kind of explore why That decision was made, but so what? It's gonna look like Sure we're we're changing the festival format. The three weekends versus 11 days, so we'll start on June 24th and work 24 25 26. July, 123 and July 89 10. We will eliminate two Sundays, two Wednesdays and a Tuesday. That's five days. So what the essence of this is and and what we discovered through? Surveys and focus groups in in in in and data mining was that our customers want Mohr national bands. Earlier in the day. Can so We're going to take the expenses from those five days that I just gave to you and we're going to reallocate them to the weekends. Where will have local bands up early, but well, you you can picture a national band. Being on the Harley stage or the Miller stage at 5 P.m. and then another headliner at nine or 10 o'clock that evening, so it's an effort to go after more quality. Versus quantity and really fish. When the fish are biting, more people are more apt to be out on the weekends. Thursday, Friday Saturday with disposable income And And in using their energy entertainment dollars on those days versus the five days that I gave you, which, really when it came right down to it, they were really weak and that is W e a K. There were weak days for us, and we were spending a lot of money to produce those days and our money can be better spent in reallocating tow three weekends done. This is just in some ways respects. The logical progression in number means. Summer fest originally was always Thursday through Sunday, 11 days and a number of years ago. You made the decision. To to drop that first Monday because of a variety of things, including, I think week attendant, So this is really just kind of a logical progression of that I would imagine. It is. I mean, you know when you look at Theaters and restaurants and so on. I mean, you find a lot of businesses closed on Mondays. But when you're running a music festival The expenses are are are significant and Whatever you can. Maximize those dollars on different days. We concluded that that's the way to go. Even though it's too less days we're gonna have we're gonna have better bands and we're gonna have the bands that our customers our fans are looking for is still at a very affordable price. We're still gonna have free gated missions. We're still gonna have promotion days. We're still gonna have Children's fast day. It's such a It's such so none of that's going to change. We're just going to camp up. No pun intended thie the quality of the of the bands that we signed and on top of that on the fringes. If you will, pre summer fest in post summer fast, we're going to do a lot of shows in the American family insurance amphitheater in the beam, O'Hare's Pavilion will probably do more shows. And those two buildings that in the history of the festival So there's going to be a lot of activity in that building. It was too bad we couldn't use it the summer Ah, it turned out beautiful. And I'm referring to the reconstruction of the amphitheater. So and I know we're not alone there. I mean, you know everyone's hurting, and that includes sports and in restaurants and businesses alike. We understand that, but we had it. We have a scheduled board meeting this morning. We went through all of this. It was a unanimous decision. And so while we do understand that there are Maur. Important things going on in our world today and in people's lives have changed because of coded and also social unrest. This is just one of those things that we had to get out there and get on with it for the planning of 21, Don't just so I'm clear that this is not a one off plan for 2021. This is this is the plan for Summer fest moving forward is that correct? We'll see. I mean, I'm not going to sit here and tell you that You know that This is a perfect plan. And if if it works if all of the data That we considered in making this decision plays out. Well, then it will be a nine day festival going forward. I mean, you know who's to say that there isn't a show on Wednesday night prior to the opening Thursday, and who's to say this might turn into a 10 Day festival? I mean, you know, everything changed with Kobe. Everyone's life has changed their personal life, their social life. All businesses have been affected. And and and we're not on an island here, so we really believe that we have to be flexible. We have to be creative. We have to be able to pivot when when it's necessary, and that's exactly what we're doing. We lost $10.4 million in 2020. That's Before depreciation by not operating summer fest or any other shows down here or the ethnic festivals, So that's quite a mountain to climb. To try to make that money back and start replenishing our reserves again after we put $10 million of our own money into the amphitheatre, which was a $51 million project, so You know, I have, really, I really couldn't tell you what the future holds. I can tell you exactly what 21 is planned for, And if for some reason we run into a fork in the road In 21. Well, then we'll make a decision. At that time when you mentioned the ethnic festivals. Does this new schedule for summer fest proper, have any Will it have any impact on any of the ethnic festivals and they're scheduling No. The ethnic festivals would have the same dates as they would have had in 20 Got it. One of the other things in your announcement today for the nine days of summer fest. It looks like eight of the days are already booked for the amphitheater, and it looks like you've got just a a killer lineup coming there. I can give them to you if you're interested. Sure. Okay. On June 24 we have Khalid 25 is Luke Bryan 26 is Justin Bieber. July 1st Dave Matthews. The second is blank. 1 82. The third is Halsey. The eighth is Stapleton and the 10th his guns and roses. So we have one day to fill July 9th. Actually, it's filled but we can announce it. Yes, and we have some other shows sprinkled in around those dates. Already. So I think that's one of the things that people need to recognize as well and in part because of the partnership you have with with live nation now, the summer fest grounds. There's even outside the parameters of the run of summer fest that the summer fest grounds we're going to be utilized, probably more than ever in 2021 with big shows, right? Yes, sir. That was a great deal We did with the Frank Brothers, which is the live nation partner here in Wisconsin and That will provide more more shows more opportunities it required. Um, the reconstruction of the amphitheater. If we didn't do that, we wouldn't be any more shows And you know, there are some shows that we won't get there. Some shows that just play that, you know, they just want to play indoors and will will not get a shot of those. And There's plenty of venues in town for for those bands to play indoors and then and then we're going to get a shot at at bands that want to play amphitheaters. So we feel like we're in good shape. They're in and we're set up for the future, and I'm sure there's going to be some traditionalists who look at this and say, I really I really missed that Tuesday's show or I can't believe they're doing away with opening day Wednesday, but This is kind of a new reality that you're dealing with in a festival. Look, Let's just, you know, get this out of the way. I mean, we know we're not going to get all the votes and we know that there will be you know, there will be some that don't agree, but you know, we're going off a day out of I, You know, everyone's entitled to their own opinion. I love that. I think that's passion. That's like arguing who should hit second or third and play right field or second base. I mean, if they're not talking about you, I mean, then you really have a problem. So You know, everyone's entitled to their own opinion. We're just going on the facts. We know what our attendance is going back. Years. Um For Thursday, Friday Saturday and we know what kind of revenue we do on those days and we know exactly what the expenses are so for us to set this up. And get it ready for future generations and replenish our reserve funds. This is the move that we need to make. Got it done. Smiley Summer fest CEO. Thanks so much for spending some time with me this afternoon. I always appreciate it.
