"Different things so hoste time under jewish ideas would be an angel and under jewish understanding. Angels do not have free will so they only do what god commands them to do in other words sucks. Yeah exactly right. So for instance. Wendy angel came down to wrestle with jacob. You know he was. He was assigned to that. Nothing else. writes Angels only new things that are approved of by god so in other words in the idea of job. The the adversary. His job is to challenge. God in other words god has created something and told him. Gimme gimme some pushback in. Oh i that you're going to be my opposing counsel. I would argue. Let's make it worthwhile. Jobs story is terrible. I mean should have already known. He knows jobs artemis he sees them. I mean it's death and destruction for sure. Job story is is a horrible horrible strikes highly degrees with me. I absolutely terrible but actually it is a polemic against the german renamo writer who speaks about You know good will come for you. Know the good people and Badness happens only to the wicked people and the job author is like no You know should happen so the region for it is is applying again the fact that these two things bannon is is just amazing in any case so everything that has the time does in. The story of job is authorized by god So again this is a big distinguishing from the idea of a fallen. Angel which god has no control over or the decimal any any of that right now and The the real villain in the book of job is god time. Who's just doing. God's will god is a terrible terrible Character in that story who creates death in And destruction and then when job has the spa to ask why god says. Where were you. When i was leading the world a little nothing or whatever like you mean nothing to me like. They're six so always a good. You know picker upper Beth really important to To distinguish those two things within judaism christianity. However i will say that in later rabbinic literature second century to sit century. We're talking mishna. Talmud midrasz on occurs again Again this is not in the Torah or tanakh canon. It is in rabbinic literature and say you know. Take that as you will. Certain people will take that as divine other people say no. They're just stories madrid. Read between the lines and so there's great stories about our patriarchs in in you..

"Would usually about half as long as the canoe which rests upon the water parallel to and a few feet away from the side of the boat and is connected with its gun well by elastic rods or play x sometimes these are covered or partly covered by allied platform and there are many variations inform but the idea in all cases is to keep the boat from overturning. In many parts of the world logs could be obtained large enough only for a narrow bottom or hollowed keel and the remainder of the boat was built up from planks and pieces. Ingeniously pegged a knit together with tree nails rattan and cords made a vegetable fibres that tightened when wet the midrasz surf. Boats are a familiar example in civilized waters of boats made in this way which have great elasticity and out of them have developed without much. Change the swift prowess of the malays and the junks of china korea and japan one device for stitching. These boats firmly together was the leaving of ridges on the inner side of the planks or pieces through holes in which there could be tied to each other and to the inner framework without making a whole reaching the outside. This system seems to have been earlier than the use of tree nails of similar construction. Apparently where the boats of the egyptians and other people's about the eastern end of the mediterranean and the red sea which as far back as three thousand years before christ had reached the size and capabilities of true ships making as we shall presently see extensive sea voyages pictures of them remain in the very ancient tombs and show that the planking consisted of pieces about three feet square which were laid on overlapping by shingles on a roof and fastened to the framework by wooden tree nails. The phoenicians and their pupils the greeks and romans improved on these methods in various ways at last substituting iron copper and bronze nails or bolts. Which would not rust for the wooden pegs of their ancestors. All of these boats and those of all western europe of which the best outside the mediterranean were. The viking ships differed in one essential point of construction from oriental ships. Instead of making the shell of the vessel and fitting into it a framework of connected braces as the malays and polynesians did and yet do. They laid a keel. Bending it up or setting into it stem and stern posts at the end and inserted along it sides curving upright timbers well styled ribs which swelled out amidships and narrowed in forward and aft making a skeleton half the shape the hull.

"The pakistani army launched this massive military operation against the northwestern tribal regions of pakistan. So dak in two thousand fourteen. No there is a lot of terrorist attacks in pakistan by these hardline groups and they had this massive counter-insurgency Close to the border of of afghanistan in a pushed. A lot of militants into afghanistan made a lot of them Fled and these are the groups that essentially become the islamic state's local franchise in afghanistan pakistan now As far as like sources the most extensive report i found on them is from the afghan analysts network. According to local residents the first groups of pakistani militants arrived in nangarhar from following operation by the pakistani army that year they moved into afghanistan often with their families apparently to flee military operations by the pakistani army calling themselves refugees in search of shelter they invoked support from the local communities in nagdar who deemed it their moral obligation to extend a helping hand to their past two brothers escaping violence in their hometowns. So i guess what ends up happening is gradually these refugees. Many of them were oppressed civilians. But many of them were not just oppressive aliens who were in pursuit of humanitarian aid. They start pledging allegiance to pakistani militant groups. Right now here. I'm going to go on with this report. And i would want to confirm this part of it hoping to use them against pakistan. The afghan government started to woo some of these fighters. Now that's interesting. what's what's funny about. This is that we know that that you know the vice versa to be true. So pakistani intelligence tacitly supports the afghan taliban. So i mean like i know. We've talked about as a bunch but like why why. Why does pakistan support. The taliban specifically well for one pakistan has an ideological interest in towel. Ben pakistan was created as a muslim nation and islam was glue. That was supposed to hold the country together. Pakistan has a lot of different ethnic and linguistic identities just like afghanistan just like afghanistan for example. There's a little country call the bangladesh. Bright dangle dash was formerly part of pakistan but the bengali speaking community broke away so that loss made the pakistani government paranoid about their western territories with You know the reason why they are paranoid about that is because in the west there is very large Pashtoon speaking populations so that's why pakistan established all these midrasz in these territories to teach this strict brand of islam in the hopes that islamic nationalism was suppressed pashtoon nationalism and You know if you don't recognize the duran line then you have a pashtunistan in the middle of both afghanistan and pakistan people. Don't even really you know dental care about these borders right and it sounds a lot to me like like the kurdistan issue..

"Shit like that All that was brought under government control because they were all a threat to their ideology. Right you can't have people learning how democracy works have people criticizing the government in the paper. You know so. They shut down newspapers. They you know we started keeping records of who's going to religious services They also burnt books and shit That weren't supportive of the revolution. Which once he starts in books burned you know. Just bad sign And you know they started swapping out teachers from the south to the north now. I could see the taliban taking over the news media pretty easily. And i think they're kind of already are right there. I mean they're holding press conferences and shit right so i think they've they've got that unlock the makeup of the taliban like i said before his is just mostly young men An uneducated minute. That's not entirely sure how they would replace things like teachers. I think that would be very difficult for them to do If they were to do anything that would just try as you said to force people into these midrasz and they would need probably outside help to get those funded But if they were to succeed in that that would be obsolete disastrous for the future economy and more so for the you know the kids remember forty. Five percent of them are under the age of fifteen. So there's that now. I could talk a bit more running a little bit long. I can summarize a few additional points big differences between Vietnam north vietnam and the taliban that obviously the the the enemies are are a communist regime. And they you know they basically communist the entire economy so they confiscated all private property in the nationalized. Every business and it backfired really quickly because things like collectivized farmers and not really having incentives on production caused everything to fall rapidly so much so that they were gonna famine. That's probably not going to happen with the taliban because they're obviously not communists in that respect but something tells me that that that the taliban aren't exactly The right people for the job of running a government..

"Welcome to still me. A podcast formerly known his heart to heart with michael our purposes to empower members of the bereaved community over the years. I've said many times that we are distillation some of those who came before us as such we owe it to them to fashion and hold onto their memories as we remember our loved ones so they will become known to those who need them now for the first time while they're no longer with us it is our obligation in our opportunity to keep them as alive as our memories of them and to share them with those who never knew them in life in today's program loss putting the shards of our lives together with evan. Kent we'll see the unique example of how this can be done to music song and storytelling our guest. Evan can't earned his doctorate in music education from boston university in two thousand fourteen. His doctoral research examined how music jewish summer camps in north america assists the development of jewish identity for twenty five years. Evan was the cantor at temple. Isaiah in los angeles. He is currently on the faculty of hebrew union college in jerusalem where he teaches liturgy and sacred music. Evan was also a member of the editorial committee for the new reform high holiday prayer book. Bescot hannah fish evans. One man show shards putting the pieces together has been presented in jerusalem. Prague and throughout the united states charts has now been presented virtually due to cover the nineteen. We're not singing acting or teaching. Evan is an avid runner. Having completed a dozen marathons many half marathons and ultramarathons today. We'll discover how a person can use music to deal with loss. How did one man's epiphany affected decision to move across the globe. Our stories about our past have to do with who we are now. How can listening to another person's personal history help us to understand our own grief or loss and our identity. Evan thank you so much for joining us on the program thank you. It's really great being here. Thank you for having me. Please tell me about your passion for music. Have you always lived music. What made you choose to earn a ph d. music. I've always loved music. I actually started out life as a violinist starting playing in third grade and eventually then started singing but my road to earning doctrine in music and music. Education was actually really. Because when i knew. I was going to be moving to israel when that was sort of part of my plan i knew that i would be teaching at hebrew union college. I knew that based on the israeli academic system that having cantor in front of your name gave you a certain amount of clout or cachet but earning doctorate even was more important here in israel because of the way the academic system is formulated but it also was a lifelong all to sort of devote myself to music to music education and also to Research i think i'm just a naturally questioning person. Always looking for answers are always looking for questions which is of course very jewish occupation and my doctoral work was really sort of the combination of lots of aspects of my life of looking looking for answers and finding more questions we have almost the exact same routes in music only ama- total failure. I third grade had the same violin in scratched up the same. Probably we probably use the same books happily for music. I went in completely other of the way in music is much better for but i think music is also better for it that you stayed with it. And that's something. I think as the program progresses we're going to appreciate that more and more. Tell me a little bit about your theater experience because it all sort of ties together that way. My earliest theatrical experience is that in a preschool preschool. Graduation i sang. I'm a little teapot brother. Michael michael i don't know anybody else who is actually verse song. I'm a little teapot increase graduation. But it's you and jennifer is where it's and thinking well. This is sort of cool I i done other theaters sort of nominally through grade school. And then i have to say that. It wasn't so much theater but it was the act of performing the act of singing of playing of being unstaged. But the actor sort of the feeling that you get when you're you've you're giving something to an audience and the audience is giving you something back. And i'm very fortunate that i ended up as a singer and then as a cantor and now as an actor in storyteller because it is also part of the same hole where you are sharing with an audience and feeling that sort of circular energy that you get when an audience is with you in the moment of performing. I think that's probably one of the reasons that i'm sitting in front of my confront right now. My roots in communications actually started in college for real and doing radio and this is a very similar thing but a lot less scary because radio is live now i know that you really embrace storytelling and that is an important part of your one man. Show why don't you tell me a little bit about that. And how storytelling his a significant part of your own life. I became very aware of the power of storytelling. I will tell you the first time i really became aware the power of storytelling was when i was a i when i first took the job at temple isaiah in los angeles and this was nineteen eighty eight when i began my twenty five years of as being a camper there at the synagogue and once a month or maybe twice a month. I don't remember at this point I worked with a group of volunteers that we would prepare brunches for patients who were day patients at at the county hospital's Mostly getting infusions and things like this is the height of the aids pandemic and standing around the tables in the temple kitchen and preparing meals and listening to people talk about their families and about their own lives are is really a form of storytelling. And i realized that these stories that we were sharing are really just sort of combinations of stories. That generations of of of my family had told standing in kitchens. My grandparents my great grandparents and that was really. I think the first moment that i understood the power of sherry each other's stories There's a very well-known doctor out of out of harvard. Who wrote a book called the kitchen table wisdom and it's really about the power of the stories that we share with each other in the power of these stories through the generations these stories in my own show in my own show which is entitled shorts are true to life stories. That's the kind of storytelling that i do. In jewish tradition we really have three or four types of storytelling. We have a tom unix stories. We have midrasz stories. We have folktales or folklore and then the fourth category sort of true life stories and those are the stories that i tell which are stories.
