"For today's intro, monitor staff writer Harry brunius speaks about his recent reporting and his gratitude for a special monitor editor. Here's Harry my cover story about letters of gratitude, which you'll hear in today's daily, became unexpectedly personal. Not only were those who shared their experience with me, so enormously generous and kind, their stories also happened to echo some of my own. So when I began to write, I felt I should compose my own letter of gratitude to them. And to you, my readers, but there's someone else I'd also like to thank. The editor who assigned this story, David Clark Scott, who had devoted 42 years of his life to the monitor, and had just taken on a new role as cover story editor, passed away the day this piece was due, this project was our first opportunity to work closely together. Ever supportive of his writers, Dave did some reporting of his own to bolster the story, we wanted to share his final dispatch with you. When 5th grade teachers Susie winterbottom needs a morale boost, she reaches for a green plastic box she keeps near her desk. Inside our keepsakes and thank you notes from students that she's collected over a decade of teaching. This past spring, an unexpected thank you note arrived as the school year drew to a close, had Mary Kay good elementary school in middleborough, Massachusetts. The note was particularly timely because this was a rough year for misses winterbottom. And many other teachers, we went from being heroes during the pandemic to having parents tell us we're not doing enough to help children make up for lost time. She observes. Test scores show many students in the United States fell behind during the pandemic. And teachers felt the pressure to help them catch up. At the same time, students social and communication skills had atrophied, they'd forget to raise their hands. They'd blurt out answers. Misses winterbottom says, it was exhausting. But then a letter arrived that boosted her spirits. It was from a student who had been in her class 6 years ago when she taught third grade. At the time, she was a new kid, feisty, too cool for school, recalls misses winterbottom, one day, the student was fooling around during a test, and knocked over a handmade glass container that had been a gift from misses winterbottom's daughter. It shattered on the floor. And the girl ignored it. She didn't clean it up. She didn't say, I'm sorry. Nothing. The letter was a much belated note of apology and a recognition of misses winterbottom's kindness during her first year in town. You were definitely one of my favorite teachers from elementary school, she wrote. Misses winterbottom says, I had forgiven her a long time ago, and I just never expected the apology. And she adds, it's these little sparks of gratitude that renew the feeling of why I do this job. It reminds you that the person they may present to you, stubborn, resistant, or just plain uninterested, well, it doesn't necessarily mean they aren't recognizing the care that you're giving to them. The letter is a reminder that is found a place in misses winterbottom's green box of classroom treasures. This is Harry brunius, reporting. Now, today's stories. Our first story

But i didn't always write about people like me. You know i right about people not like me at all. I find that extraordinary when you have often. You have male protagonist. I'm slightly labeled that sort of you know middle middleborough to which. I didn't think i am particularly tool but i can't complain. 'cause whiny writers are not a pleasant sight. 'cause we have an amazing life if we can get away with it all the writers. I know think that somebody's gonna come and feel our caller. And say you really think you can get away with making up things in presuming people are going to pay for them. You know it's an extraordinary thing but it does seem to me that you have been cheated completely differently as a novelist because you are a woman that there are a lot of men who were writing similar themes and books who's public perception of them is entirely different. Yes it's it is true and it's not is not really fair and A lot of male writers quite you know lauded male writers if you strip away their name. They will be writing quite novel lettuce. You know women's magazine novels. Actually but you know there are other grant. I think men. A lot of male writers take themselves pretty seriously and then the world takes him pretty seriously..
