"And the arcane rule 5 and military list rules that are going to dominate the headlines all spring. That will definitely come up at some point this segment. But I guess I'll start here with more of a bigger picture question because last year's Phillies as we all recall caught fire in the playoffs won the pennant took the big bad Astros to a 6 World Series game. So in a sense, they would have to win the World Series to top last year's results. But they were also at 87 win team that squeaked into the playoffs by winning a wild card that didn't exist the year before. So how did they view their task this off season that they look at themselves as a pennant winning team that, hey, we're just obviously going to get back there or did they see that they were a team that barely got there in the first place? I think they saw them as selves as a team that was legitimately a playoff contender. And I understand why they looked at the season as having two different parts. It wasn't even too different halves. It was like two different a third of the season and another two thirds of the season. And you think about it. I mean, an opening day, they had DD Gregorius playing shortstop for them, Matt veering slash Google Herrera was in center field. You had Jerry's familiar pitching the 8th inning. You had Corey canable as the closer you had Brad hand as a high leverage guy. I mean, they had a very different team at the beginning of the season last year than the one that they finished with the one that got them into the playoffs and then through the playoffs to the World Series. So I think they looked at it and also a managerial change, of course, which was a big point in the season. But they looked at it as a team that went 65 and 46 in a rob Thompson and then just streaked through the playoffs. And they're like, this is a team that can content. We have a roster that is most of it is star players in their prime. We have a couple of good young complimentary players around them. Let's go out and spend some more money and put this thing over the top. And of course, they go out and sign Trey Turner for $300 million and that should give you an idea of how they view this roster moving forward. Yeah, I think that when we were at this point last year and we were assessing the Phillies, I jokingly said that I had no notes about their decision to construct a team seemingly entirely out of designated hitters. Notes emerged. And you could see some of that course correction unfold during the season when they traded for marsh, and then obviously bringing Turner and so sort of a related question from just a fielding and defense perspective. How do they view themselves now and what kind of lessons did they take from what might have been a little bit of a wonky roster construction last year? I think the way they look at themselves now is they are way, way stronger up the middle defensively by a lot and they are still really concerning on the corners, both in the infield and the outfield. I don't think it's any secret. I mean, look at I think just up the middle look at it. I mean, you have arguably the best catcher in the sport behind home plate. And really, I think what's going to come into play more is his arm this year. I feel like catcher's arms are going to become something of a focus again with the possibility of more base stealing and also fewer ability to hold on hers on, et cetera. And then when you move Bryson stock over to second base and add tray Turner at shortstop and I know it doesn't always great as an elite shortstop. But the combination is two is probably one of the best better defensive double play tandems they've had in a long time. It's way better suited to be at second base and shortstop where I think he was probably more average, second base. I think he can be a plus defender there. And in Martian center, his it's a big upgrade from what they had at a beer lane was probably miscast as a center Fielder, more of a corner guy and then Herrera, you just never knew what you were going to get from a Dubai around center field. They had Mickey moniak running around there a lot at times last year and it was just okay. Marsha's good out there. So they're way better up the middle. The corners are the corners. I mean, it's not good. I think they're just going to plow through it. I mean, they hope at some point, Bryce Harper's playing right field again. And Bryce is not always a plus plus defender and right field, but he would be obviously an upgrade over Nick Castellanos, but hey, let's just remember all the great catches in the castings made the playoffs, right? There were a lot of big free agents available this off season in a lot of short steps specifically. So why was Trey Turner the guy that the Phillies targeted? For one, I mean, I think it's about the fit, both on and off the field and to fit on the field is that he gives them something atop the lineup, but they really haven't had in a long, long time. I mean, even with Jimmy Rollins was banning a top he ordered for the Phillies.

"He was also a Hall of Famer, but most of his career was in the 19th century, so the Phillies, they've been shorthanded in the outfield and they've been trying to find solutions there and they traded Mickey moniak for Brandon Welsh and they released Herrera and Bryce Harper is not quite back yet, although should be pretty soon. Anyway, Nick meton, the infielder, played left field on Wednesday of this week, marsh left the game and maitan came in on Tuesday after marsh departed. So it was the first time meitan had played outfield in the big leagues and he played less than one game's worth of innings in the outfield in the minors, but he played okay on Tuesday, he made a diving catch and a catch in the corner and Philly's interim manager rob Thompson said he looked like Ed delahanty out there, which like I can't imagine. People were thinking that. No. First of all, who knows what Ed delahanty looked like out there? He last played in 1902. So we don't have great game footage of the out and left, which is just interesting that he would go there. It's almost like showing off your knowledge of baseball this time or Philly's history to just drop a delahanty like that. I Googled best left fielders in Philly's history, which I wasn't sure whether that post would exist, but it did. There's a 2020 MLP dot com Philly's top 5 left fielders, and this is by Todd solecki. And he actually excluded at telehealth from the ranking on the grounds that he played too long ago, basically. So he's like, you know, that's not real baseball. So he excluded at the end the original Billy Hamilton just because they played so long ago. And so he had sherry McGee at the top of the list to play not that much more recently than Adele hante, and Greg kuczynski, pat Burrell, and Gary Matthews. Now, some of those players, you probably would not want to comp from a defensive standpoint, you know, if you said that you looked like pat Burrell out there. That might mean you looked like a good hitter or just a handsome guy, but probably not that you were a great glove. Anyway, I'm impressed by rob Thompson dropping an Ed delahanty and also it's perfectly timed because we're up to 1892, which was at Dallas first star level season for the Phillies. And also, he was a star on the 1900 Phillies, whose sign stealing scheme was alluded to on the LastPass blast, so there we go. I managed to tenuously connect these observations. The actual past blast here comes as always from Richard hershberger. Historian, safer researcher, and author of strike for the evolution of baseball. And Richard reporting from the saber convention writes two reports connecting baseball of 1892 with baseball of today. The first comes from sporting life of February 20th, 1892, discussing John Montgomery's spring training plans for the Brooklyn team. Words arrangement for his spring visit of the Brooklyn team to Florida exceeds anything that has been arranged for several years. Last spring, the Brooklyn's and Chicago's had to pay $700 between them for the use of the St. Augustine grounds, the club was compelled to pay $3 a day per man for hotel accommodations. This year, ward gets the Ocala grounds free of rent and the Ocala people secure hotel accommodation for the team at $1 a day per CAPiTA. The city also furnishes the entire team with round trip tickets for the trip down and back. The grounds are in good condition, well fenced and have plenty of seeding capacity. Richard writes, this is the earliest example I know of a direct government subsidy to attract a baseball team. It is only spring training, but a portent of greater things. So if you want to look at public funding for ballparks and so forth, maybe this is the first example, 1892, given the team a steep discount and free travel to come down and play spring training. So that's precedent setting. The second one comes from the sporting life's Pittsburgh correspondent in the May 14th issue. This is our second straight or almost second straight pass bus we were talking about hotel pricing in the 1890s. This is big. But may 14th, this is a little bit different. The refreshment receipts are big, but all the proceeds for this go to Harry Stevens, who has put up $600 for the privilege and will make 6 times that amount through his hustling, one day recently, this stand took in $76, and you know there is a great profit in that line. There are good many kickers about the price Stevens charges for his liquors, but Harry meets them by saying in a pleasant way, now you surely can not expect a meal with a baseball ticket, will pay 15 cents for a lemonade in a bar room and never make the slightest kick. And Richard observes there are two connections with the present day. The obvious one is the complaint about inflated ballpark prices. The less obvious is the person of Harry Stevens, he was a real go getter rising from steel mill worker to selling scorecards to holding the refreshment concession in many major league parks. Harry M Stevens incorporated survived his death in 1934 until it was published in 1994 by Aramark corporation, which sells overpriced stadium food to this day. All right, thank you to Richard and to all of our stat blessed questioners and researchers and I guess that will do it for today and for this week. All right, before

"And the other NLEs team. Kind of like what the Phillies did, actually. So how about that? Picked up Noah syndergaard for getting louder. That's not a good sign. For Mickey moniak and another prospect and then they got David Robinson another go around for Robertson with the Phillies from the cubs. How about that? Pitching prospect. Then they picked up Brandon marsh from the angels too, like the angels were like everything must go except for tani. And then they also got Sosa from the Cardinals. So kind of like these moves. And marsh, like getting a marsh has not hit that well. You struck out a ton, but he is a good defender. He was recently a top prospect. And so the Phillies have needed that better than having a double Herrera out there for multiple reasons, so to get marsh to get Robertson who has been lights out this year and to get kindergarten who is not like flame throwing Thor peak. But is still an effective mid rotation guy, it seems like, you know, nice work for the Phillies, I think. Yeah, I quite liked their deadline. You're right that marsh has not hit, I think he has like an 80 WRC plus or something right now. But the thing about Brandon marsh that is different from the other guys in the outfield for the Phillies is that he is an actual outfielder. Yes. He is not a DH, pretending to be an outfielder, and I think that I think they're going to enjoy that experience. I think they're going to be like, hey, you know, this brand of marsh guy can play some defense. Yeah. At least he gets to keep his hair, presumably, so that's nice at least. The Phillies as we speak are tied with the Cardinals. Yeah. The race for that last wild card spot, so I think they got better by more than the Cardinals did for whatever that's worth. Obviously getting Harper back would be the biggest addition that they could make, but they've played pretty well even in his absence. So they have kind of rated the ship there and they're trying to be better. So I like the work they did there at the end. So we've hit on all the teams, I think, that made a lot of moves and we've talked about some of the teams that made no moves very few. Right, and I guess the only other teams that were kind of caught in the middle somewhere where the Red Sox, right? Real weird deadline the Red Sox kind of a confounding deadline. They traded Vasquez. They also traded for Hosmer and excited for Tommy Pham. That was interesting. I guess the Hosmer is that like the equivalent of the schwarzer move from last year because I don't think that's going to work out as well. I mean, I don't know, they were kind of a bubble team and I'm okay with them like not trading big pieces away and trading bogarts and all like they have a chance and they're the Red Sox. They can keep those guys. They could sign guys. That's fine. But yeah, the moves that they made, like some subtracting some addition at the same time, like not a clear direction there, not sure what to make of that. Yeah, I mean, I guess. So it's not that Eric Hosmer was free, right? Because they did send a prospect to San Diego to help balance that deal, but they're not really paying error Cosmo or anything. Right. So he's basically free. And I don't say that to knock J groom. It's just like, it wasn't an exorbitant package that went back and forth. So there's like that piece of it. And tiny fam was like giving away for practically nothing. I think that was a player to be named later as the other side of that deal for them, right? So like, you can't get a Tommy fam and Enrique Hernandez has been hurt very much of the year and French Cordero is bad. And so like, okay, but then you move Vasquez and doing that has inspired some of their other players to be like, what are we doing? Again, I think that you want to try to avoid moves that inspire like that degree of Clubhouse Discord, and they were all professionals, but like when Xander bogarts is like, what are we? That seems not the best. That seems like something has gone wrong. So it was just kind of a weird deadline for them. I think that, you know, if we're looking at the AL east, it's like, obviously, the Yankees from the Yankees were a playoff team. You heard it here first folks. And then I think that the Blue Jays will Blue Jays their way and that seems like it's going to go fine. And then the rays keep hanging around despite the fact that their entire rosters hurt. So I really liked that Peralta pick up for them. I think that's going to end up being good. Although they did make some 40 man consolidation trades where they gave up guys who seem like they might be something just because they have to clear 40 man space. So that's suboptimal, but they were going to have to do that in the off season anyway, so whatever. The J's were linked to a lot of guys they didn't get, and then they ended up getting a few. They got Zach pop, who I will always remember for being the first major leaguer we met in meet a major leaguer, so they got him from the Marlins as well as Anthony bass, and really, if you're the Marlins and you have Anthony bass, you have to hold on to the guy named bass and also I got rid of fishman. I know they promoted and then demoted Jake fishman. Fishman and Marlins, come on, marwan, so what are you doing? Questions about their deadline beyond that, probably, but also like if you're collecting fish themed guys. Yeah, you got to get all the fish guys. Come on. Look, we will take trout's contract. I'm just saying. He is a fish man. Yeah. The moments ended up not trading Pablo Lopez. I think they need to rejigger that roster at some point. Really? Yeah. So they didn't do much at the deadline. But the Blue Jays, they got best they got, pop, they got Mitch white from the Dodgers and then hilariously they got muirfield from the royals who I assume will indeed be getting vaccinated. I think the Jays don't have a home game for about ten days, so he has a little time to get the jab and have that take effect and not miss too much time when they return home. But there was like a very smooth bit of finessing on that question because I think they were asked about that and he was like we're getting to know him like that's between him and his family and it's like look I think we have made our position on whether or not people should get vaccinated clear but you know you have to like manage people, some of whom might have beliefs that are not in accordance with yours or certainly not in accordance with your roster requirements, but instead you're like, it's between him and his family and then you can have a soft conversation. Instead of being like, he's a dummy. We're mad about it. Yeah. I mean, they must have some. Well, he said, right? But if he was traded to a contender rate, which is pretty obvious that it's like, yeah, if you're a winner, I'll think about it. Right. He doesn't sound like that. It's rude for me to do my goofy guy voice when doing these things, but that is how it feels. Yes, and the other team that was kind of like, uh, which way are you going? The Giants, right? So we talked about a couple of minor giants moves.

"Been a while since our last meet a major leaguer and we have a whole lot of new major leaguers to meet this season. We've talked about the big ones, of course, many of the top prospects who have come up. But there have been 56 players who have made their major league debuts so far this season through Thursday's games and many of them are more obscure and that was the original intention behind the segment, which we started last season just because there are so many major leaguers now. There are more than ever, primarily because of pitching and maybe there will be fewer now because of the changes to IELTS stint length and the option rules and all of that. So that should reduce the shuffle somewhat. But as long as we have giant bull pens and pictures cycling in and out, we are going to have a lot of major leaguers to meet in a lot that even people like us who are pretty plugged in are just not aware of or couldn't tell you anything about beyond their names. So let's get to it I guess today we are actually not introducing you to pictures. We are going to go with the para position players. Would you care to go first? Sure, I would be happy to go first. This was actually a suggestion to us from Jay, a Patreon supporter. So thank you for pointing it out. And I'm going to introduce us to Phillies center Fielder, Simon musiani, who inauspiciously was optioned to the miners today. Oh no. Moments before we started recording. But he is still worth meeting. He has a pretty, he has a pretty remarkable story, so here I'm going to start by reading from a piece by Matt gael bet the athletic was at a hotel in reading Pennsylvania when his phone rang last Thursday. This piece is from April 11th. So that the Thursday before April 11th. It was Jorge Valencia, a fellow Venezuelan and Philly assistant general manager he had life-changing news who played all of 20 minor league games last season because of Visa problems was going to the majors because Mickey moniak broke his hand during his final at bat of spring training. I couldn't believe he said through team interpreter, and I was like, is this for real? Are they really calling me up? And we're going to spend some time talking about his profile, but I just like this bit to close the section of this piece that gel broke. After the news was delivered, miss yachty called his parents in Venezuela, my mom couldn't believe it, he said, my dad just started screaming. And the Visa problems from Uzi Adi were very meaningful problem. He effectively missed two years of stateside development, right? Because we had the pandemic in 2020, and then his Visa problems last year kept him off the field for most of the season. And here I am going to read from our prospect report on Museo di where he was ranked 19th in the Philly system prior to the start of the season. Visa issues kept musy audio off the field for most of 2021, but once he was activated in late August the Phillies put him on a fast track, he played one game on the complex than three at Lowe for at high and four double-A before finishing the season with 8 games in triple-A. That monthlong whirlwind makes for a minuscule sample upon which it seems unreasonable to pin many drastic changes to the center Fielder's report, the component most lacking is still his power production, which is 5 of his 21 hits going for extra bases in 2021 and none leaving the park. He'll occasionally show an incredible ability to rotate but doesn't do so consistently enough for him to build around it. He can rip his hands through the zone and get the barrel on pitches inside and he can spoil tough pitches on the edge of the zone, but most of his contact is in the form of ground outs and line singles. That said, during the fall, he laid off the outer zone pitches he wants typically Squibb into easy outs, where enamored with the rotational athleticism here and want to see what happens when he gets to play a full healthy season. So he was a 40 future value prospect entering the season. He's sort of renowned for his bat ball skills, but as the report here notes, not much of power hitter, although his speed has translated into pretty good defense. So he was brought up in addition to the moniac injury audible Herrera was on the injured list, the reason he was optioned today, Museo di, that is, is because rare is making his return from the aisle. He debuted on April 11th and his big league production so far is interesting because he hasn't hit all that often. He has mostly been a late game sort of defensive replacement. He had a pinch running appearance. So he came up on the 11th and his season stats, you know, they're not much to write home about. He is so far hitting one 43 two 51 43 with a 27 WRC plus, but that isn't all of 9 played appearances. So this is a guy who will probably get more consistent development time in the miners for a bit here, which is probably something he needs given the amount of time that he has missed, but before he was optioned, he was just, he was having a great time and he said, it's pretty good that I'm playing with Bryce Harper, Alec baum, DD Gregorius, players you see on TV, I'm playing with them. It's amazing. And so we hope we see you again in the big league soon moss seems like he just plays with a really great spirit and vibe. I love to play baseball when I can't do it, it's stuff on me. So we hope you see you again soon. Yeah. Simone mos yadi. There you go. He's only 23. He's only 23. We're back, left handed hitter. It's not a bad thing to be a pretty talented defensive replacement for the Phillies. No. One would think that that could play. Yeah. I know they just traded for an outfielder Dustin Peterson for the viewers. And he's at triple-A two. So I guess we'll see how he was not playing a and maybe he wasn't even playing B and I know they traded Adam hasley to the White Sox during spring training too, so they were super shorthanded and they've been relying on Matt verling a lot too. So maybe it was not the plan, but it became the plan in he became the beneficiary of that. So that's nice and he has some fun stories to tell. He wouldn't have expected it based on how often he played in the minors last year. No, it's like really, it's really an incredible thing. He had like, he just had so few played appearances and that he would be in a position where, you know, even want to understands what the roster constraints that they had in the injuries that he was probably being thrust into the big leagues before they would have otherwise had him on that developmental trajectory, but that he was at least playable enough in center and speedy and able to get that call is great. So he'll go get his work in at double-A and I imagine we will see him back in the big leagues at some point because as you said, the all vibes thing. Who knows how long it'll last, Ben. All right, well my guy is on the Toronto Blue Jays and he still is, as we speak, his name is ghost cake cat..

"There are all these bones and kingery is in moniac hanging around here who like, if one of them could click, that would really help quite a lot. And I know people are maybe excited about Mickey moniak, spring. He has a 1285 OPS in spring training, which is fun, although I will note that he also had 1000 plus OPS in spring trading in each of the past two years in fewer at bats, but that's something that has happened. So rookies, I mean, we mentioned start rate and is not veering rookie eligible. I don't remember how Ricky eligibility works. But he's around as well. Hey Matt feeling is ruche eligible. You like either of them or anyone else? Yeah, I mean, I think it having just mentioned bomb like it was interesting that that was a bit of a positional battle, but I think as Meg said, I think it's pretty likely we see get some time at short and yeah, it's exciting that he will be on the roster for opening day and I think that one should be went to watch out for. All right, well that's the Phillies. There's definitely a lot of reasons to watch this team. It should be frustrating at times and fun at other times. So I'm definitely looking forward to this Philly season. It will be unlike any other season that we will see this year, I think. So that brings us to the Marlins. They were also active. There are a lot of active teams in this division this winter. Do you have a favorite or best Marlins move? So looking like big picture long-term, I think it's hard not to pick extending a sandy Alcantara because that's I think a really good step toward blocking down this young rotation core, which is very exciting and fun to watch. But I also really liked picking up Jacob stallings at catcher to talking about how good this rotation can be in, especially a young rotation, having him there to manage his staff, I think, is really exciting. And so that one, I think, might be my favorite. Yeah, that's a good pick. By the way, I should mention that the Phillies have kind of overhauled their player development department. So maybe things will get better there as Nebraska said, we need to be better at getting players over the hump and producing good players from within the system. I agree, Dave, the Philly's definitely need to be better at that. All right, back to the so the strength, I guess the strength is probably what we've always talked about with the steam right the young pitcher. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's hard not to, yeah. Yeah. There's a lot of it. It's fun. I mean, there are pictures on the staff who have already been great. Like, I'll counter and Rogers. I mean, people have projected our counter to make even greater strides I've seen according to stat cast. I noticed this because my colleague Zach kram pointed it out the other day. But Alcantara had the worst framing support of any pitcher. He had the most runs last two framing according to baseball savant last season. So with Stalin's hopefully that will not be the case, even though maybe stylings is a more elite blocker than a framer, hopefully that'll get a little bit better for him. But Trevor Rogers has already really good bubble Lopez. Eleazar Hernandez, they're so many guys here. Jesus, I guess the question. I don't know whether we're stepping on any breakout picks or anything here, but that's definitely one of the storylines of the season. How much will you get out of him? Yeah. And obviously 6 do Sanchez who does not seem to be close to returning from his shoulder surgery. So I just, I have no idea what to expect out of him if anything or when, but there are so many good pictures here that they've already traded a little bit from that depth, but they could continue to if they want to supplement the lineup still. Yeah. Yeah, I can't wait to see what this player does group can do with lizard, which isn't to say that like, you know, Oakland's not like bad at that, but I think that there's just the opportunity here for him to take a step forward with the combination of what they're up to and good health and yeah, and if 6 or 6 inches can ever figure out a better fastball shape like look at. Weakness? I appreciate that they try to fix the lineup some Jorge soler. They tried. You can't say they didn't do anything. They did that do enough for dirt cheaters taste seemingly. Yeah, weird. Because what we're saying, this rotation could be so, so, so good. And it's like if you could just do a little more here to give me confidence that you could at least consistently be a average ish offense. I would feel so excited to watch this you and instead you haven't quite done that. I think it admirable job of trying with what seemed like it was not very much to work with. Financially, but yeah. Yeah. Garcia, obviously Garcia is a good player in Jorge soler. I have no idea whether he's like the very not good player or the very good player who he was like within last season. I don't know exactly what to make of him and Stalin's obviously helps you a lot. Defensively at the very least. So it is an improvement, but yeah, they were linked to Castellanos and Marte, who, of course, was a Marlin in the not too distant past. And someone like that, I mean, yeah, it seems like they could use a real Big Bopper, but I believe in aspects of the lineup, I guess. Is there a breakout pick either on the offensive side or just yet another pitcher who could take a step forward for you? I think luzardo is such a good pick because I really do think that, you know, working with this staff, I would be really excited to see what we get from him if he can kind of fit in with the rest of this rotation. But other than that, you know, this steps on a rookie, but I'm talking about this lineup and what we might see. Can you curious to see what Jesus Sanchez does in the outfield? He does have some power that is other always missing from this lineup and I would like to see maybe we can get something from him there. But yeah, breakout wise, you know, I feel like it's hard because pitching staff is already so good other than luzardo that you can't really point to much there. And then the lineup is what we've discussed it is. So is it too late to predict well, I don't know if I'm predicting, but to hope for a jazz Chisholm break out sort of for him to elevate past what he did last year, which wasn't bad, but was not like, you know, he was a below league average header and the defense was only so, so. So maybe we could give some hope to just hold my suppose? Yeah, I think so. He's one of those players who in my head because he is so much fun to watch even if he hasn't like fully put it together that he has already transcended it in my head. Even though you're right, he was not a leak average hitter, even though he felt like one to me. Right. But very much felt like one. And so that's a great point. This close. Yeah, it was close. But not quite there. Yeah, no. His highlights are as exciting as anyone. And I guess it sounds like a cliche, but consistency that's kind of important for him, but also plate discipline and strikeout to walk ratio. He struck out close to 30% of the time last year and walked less than 7% of the time. So that's an issue, but he does have speed and power and it definitely wouldn't surprise me to see him make a step forward. He's only 24, so yeah, I could see it. And I'm with you on Sanchez as well. I could see him having a 30 Homer season. He hit 14 and 251 plate appearances last year. So clearly has a lot of power. So yeah, there's that..
