Reflections On Atlanta Braves Legend Henry "Hank" Aaron
"I could talk about the dignity in the class of hank. Aaron the man the you've been being for an hour easily but i'm a numbers guy and so let me tell you what i did. After hank aaron died i navigated over to his page on baseball reference. And i don't know. I just be held the majesty of this man's career and it literally gave me goosebumps. The more i looked the more. I realized he was beyond great. He was at some other level. He wound up with nearly thirty eight hundred hits. And that's a lot of freaking hits. It's a thousand more history chipper jones. It's two thousand more hits than mark. Maguire it's more hits than johnny bench and hank greenberg got combined and they're both in the hall of fame so i think about all those hints and i think about those seven hundred fifty five homeless because that's two hundred more homes than mickey mantle. Two hundred it's more homers than edgar martinez and duke snider hit combined. And they're both in the hall. But the more i dug i found other cool stuff to hank. Aaron had double digit home run seasons at age twenty and age. Forty here the only three players who did that. Willie mays ted williams hank aaron. That's a pretty good. Start on a mount rushmore. Would you say and all those home runs. He hit for all those years. This never struck out one hundred times. Then there's total basis crushes. Everyone who ever played in total bases six thousand eight hundred and fifty. Six total bases isn't just a record. It's seven hundred. Twenty two more than stan. Musial was the next closest player in history. If stan musial had hit another one hundred and eighty home runs. He still wouldn't catch i karen and total basis. That's a lot of total basis. That's incredible hitter hank. Aaron was for two decades. So is it possible to be one of the greatest players who ever lived and still the underrated. After looking over hank aaron's numbers. I think it is my name. Is david o'brien cover the braves for the athletic. And there's only two guys that i've ever felt this aura around them and that was mohammed ali and hank. Aaron and hank aaron. How's interviewed him. The first time at spring training. I remember approaching him and it was just You know i've done this for thirty years. And it was feeling. I've had unlike any other athlete that i've ever approached but then he immediately just he smiled and was so warm that that fear or intimidation just as melted away. And you could not believe that you were talking to this. Superstar is genuine icon living in atlanta for twenty years You can't overstate the importance of hank. Air to this city and this region the south. I grew up in the south and hank aaron being a black man being the greatest one of one of the two or three greatest players of all time and to do what he did in the south and then living in atlanta and seeing hank aaron you know mementos anchor and tributes and see his name on buildings and streets and that kind of thing. I would argue that. There is no athlete. That is more important to a city than hanker and wants to atlanta. He was such a huge part of how the culture of the south has changed. I mean this is a city where you feel fide of being so much black acceptance here. Thanks a huge huge part of that. He helped pave the way for all these other black athletes and entertainers wanna come here to be here. Brian jordan know it was an all star with atlanta. Bryant said that The reason that he chose atlanta was hank. Aaron and was a boy idle here. He said a black kid growing up playing baseball hank. Aaron was the guy but it was an opportunity for me to meet my hair. The hope the opportunity is given so many kids today. Amazing dominique wilkins. Said hank was a big reason. That he came here was one of the first people. It's probably one of the most instrumental guys into getting me here in atlanta. But one for god like hank. I wouldn't been here. Was hanker went to ted turner and said hey you need to get this kid by any means necessary. He said people should give the roses while they're alive and that he's glad to see him getting them now but he said hank should have been put on a pedestal decades ago and he was right What are the things that i remember him saying is that you gotta set example for people to come at you. And how do you do that. You do the right way you doing about being Have miltie you do it by just doing the right thing and the right thing a lot of times. It's hard and a lot of guys. Young guys don't know how to do the right thing. As far as how they present themselves to people and how they get back to people so to give back experts that i've learned over the years has become from erin trampling. We don't see that much of that anymore today. And he lived in the same house that he bought when he came here in. Nineteen sixty six from the

Can You Train Yourself to Become Ambidexterous?
"The. World is made up of about ninety percent of right handed people and ten percents, left-handed people folks who are truly ambidextrous, those who use their right and left hand equally well make up a negligible sliver of the population, but is ambidextrous, inherited or learned, and if learned, can it be learned as an adult? We spoke of email with Dr Sebastian. Auckland Berg a professor of psychology at Ruhr University and BOCOM Germany. He said a little bit of both. And this is determined by about twenty five percent, genetic factors and seventy five percent, non genetic factors like environmental influences. It clearly runs families, so it is somewhat inherited, but learning might also affect it I think amdex steady for a specific task. like hitting a tennis ball with the racket is possible, but full embiid extremity for all tasks is unlikely. Handedness being the skill in comfort, a person feels using one hand, or the other is considered a complex genetic trait, and since genes are involved hand, preference develops before a person's even born, but like other complex traits handedness including ambiguity extremity doesn't have a simple pattern of inheritance. Yes there is a greater chance. The children of left-handed parents will also be lefthanded than righties, but remember the chance of being a lefty is just ten percent overall, so most children have lefties are still right handed. An identical twins are more likely than non identical twins to both be either right or left handed, but many of both types do have opposite hand preferences, and that's before we even talk about whether a child's handedness is allowed to develop naturally or whether parents and teachers interfere. Hand dominance typically develops around age three and fully developed by age four to five, but it can be influenced by insisting a child uses their other hand, or by happenstance for example when he was four years old, former major league baseball pitcher Billy Wagner broke his right elbow and spent the summer in a cast. In his memoir Wachner victory recalls being a natural righty at the time and already mad for baseball, but for the next six weeks he threw only left-handed when the cast came off, he was in for a surprise when he tried throwing with his right, the ball went nowhere had lost not a strength of coordination for throwing with his right arm and gained it in his left. Wagner wrote. I was a natural righty then and still am I do everything right handed eat told tools right start lawnmower everything except pitch. Wagner wouldn't be considered ambidextrous though he's certainly managed to have an incredibly successful career working with his non dominant hand. Baseball is full of players who switch hit meaning. They hit equally well from either the left or right side, and are comfortable, facing left or right handed pitchers, some like hall of Famers, Eddie Murray Mickey Mantle and Chipper Jones were successful, but they like. Wagner weren't truly ambidextrous. Which is something? That's very difficult to do, but why the? Lindburg said headedness is something that is generated in the brain, not the hands as such. The half the brain contra lateral to the hand is better in controlling fine motor movements for example, the left brain hemisphere in right handers. The strength of this preference varies between individuals. Some people have a very strong preference for one hand, and resulting from that greater issue in using the other for specific tasks, so it's the brain that sets the barrier. But if the brains, that's the barrier. The brain can also remove it. Take the case of Billy McLaughlin. McLaughlin is an award winning guitarist known for a unique style of play, placing both hands on the Fredbord, Originally predominantly a right handed guitar player, but in the late nineteen nineties despite having a record at number seven on the billboard. He was struggling with control problems. He was missing notes when he played an experienced muscle spasms to the point that he was unable to perform. Finally in two thousand one McLaughlin was diagnosed with focal Dystonia, a movement disorder, causing muscles to contract involuntarily, though advised to find another career McLaughlin opted to teach himself to play left handed and he succeeded. So this begs the question. Can we teach ourselves to become ambidextrous as adults? A two thousand seven study found that as we age, we actually become more ambidextrous without even trying in part because the hands that we use more loses. Its dominance of the study was small. It included sixty participants all strongly right handed according to the Edinburgh handedness inventory, the participants completed various computerized dexterity tests, which included line tracing and aiming task and tapping the youngest group average age, twenty five years performed all the skills proficiently using their right hand, the Middle Age participants average age fifty years performed well using either hand on the gaming task while the two oldest groups average ages, seventy and eighty years performed just as well using either hand on all tasks except one. However overall performance appeared to decline with increasing age especially for the participants dominant hand, leading researchers to believe that quote, we become more ambidextrous as we get older because dominant hand loses its superior dexterity, and becomes more like are weaker hand. Some people have wondered whether attempting to become ambidextrous could strengthen the brain and potentially slow or fight the effects of aging or dementia Allen Berg said that's a myth, while it is true in general that brain training is a good idea when aging research has shown that what at strengthened is what is trained, so if I trained to write with my non dominant hand, this would affect the motor brain areas of the contra lateral half the brain, but not the areas involved in memory. Thus a specific memory training would make more sense in aging and dementia.

"And you know after Brooks and frank hit. The home runs in the first inning. I said boy. We know we have a chance to win this game now. We had a good ball club. We had won ninety seven games only three more than we had one in sixty five when the twins as you mentioned went to the world series but they want to. Franklin's over its forty nine home runs two more in the world series is the MVP triple crown. But Motor basket. Came in and you know Mo- We have picked up for twenty five thousand dollars on a waiver wire and he had a great arm. Great Command great breaking ball and I was sitting there at age twenty going. You know. They're having a little trouble with a High Fassulo and on that particular day As I mentioned a pitch my first shutout you know my command was pretty good. The fact that Willie Davis made two errors really three years on to fly balls in an errant throw. You know I got enough runs where you know again. It wasn't a one nothing game. Which is what happened with volley bunker be coasting and game three or when the guy came back the Don Drysdale one nothing in Baltimore on a Frank Robinson. Home run so you know? I think a lot of times you you know. If you're pitcher like I am and you just go out there and compete and the stars were aligned. That day you know again because of the errors in fact it and who knew that I was going to be sands last game because he was coming off and just well typical. Colfax the The year you know if you go back in you know from sixty five to illegal you know maybe the early sixties to nineteen sixty six when he went on twenty seven games. What you remember about getting word that Sandy was retiring Was it a surprise for you? And did you ever get a chance to talk to sandy about pitching against each other that game? No but you know you mentioned the fact that you always you know you always Kinda pitchers with starting pitcher and you know on on the Monday before The first game is Tuesday. I think maybe the Wednesday game was the game that I believe. That's the day that I ended up pitching. I know it was game too. I remember taking you know. Shake hands with Sandy. But you know again when you grow up in southern California for forty years and you go to dodger stadium and You know people say well who you know. Who did you want to emulate? I wasn't left handed so I really couldn't be saying he coca. That could be done Drysdale. Who you know made every right handed hitter. They got into the box uncomfortable because he was very much like Bob Gibson. You know you again you go on your your rear end you know. Colfax you know. Sandy was more genteel. Probably I mean I probably was more of a right hand version where you know. I only think I hit thirty nine batters in maybe four thousand. Not that I couldn't pitch in I just. I was more of a kind of a vertical not horizontal pitcher like Drysdale it gets into whatever and Sandy was the same type of Guy. But you know anybody that you know. I mean I I you know I knew about the perfect games and the no hitters. I mean buster. Who Sandy Koufax you just like. I said you don't want to embarrass yourself and you know again i. I don't think anybody anticipated number. One the Orioles winning in nineteen sixty six because she mentioned dodgers. You know they'd beating the they'd be the The Yankees Sixty three. There'd be the twins the real good ball club and sixty five and then all of a sudden they're planning the Orioles and again. Why is we had a good team? You know we went ninety. Seven Games I think that everybody thought that their speed and especially to their pitching would dominated. And it's just amazing that one team in four games only hits one twenty five and that was the padding average for the dodgers against the oil pitching staff and sixty six. Yeah still by by by the numbers the worst performance for any team in world series history. You mentioned no no no no. Let's rephrase let's rephrase it was about reform of any so you mentioned you hit You know how few batters you hit during your career. Your manager Earl was was not in line with the thinking of a lot of other managers who believe strongly in retaliation he was. He was kind of ahead of his time. And I remember a story. We mentioned bike Messina early in his career you got. There was a huge dust up between the orioles and the Seattle Mariners and Mike hit bill. Hassell men because he was told to and then he got hurt in the subsequent brawl. Mike told me after that he said I never would do that again. how did you? How did you feel about about earls handling of those situations in the way that he viewed the whole question of retaliation? Well I played for from sixty nine through eighty two and the only time I ever remember him telling anybody to told anybody was the game. That in nineteen six Reggie Jackson came out. Remiss five Five weeks You know twenty nine runs a kind of cost us dependent because you know he held out him. You know you wanted a five year deal. The Orioles really didn't have much force on it because he would've signed for a lot less than he ultimately would sign at the end of the year as free agent with the Yankees. But we were. We were playing duck Alyssa stitch. And you know somebody tried to drop down. And you know doc you know. Look into the DUGOUT and yells. You know the next one of you so and so's I'm GonNa hit you right inside the head and Reggie got up on the third day he says you WanNa hit somebody get me. Well next time up got hit him right in the side of the face. The right between right below the jaw Maybe a little bit underneath the year and they brought the EMC truck right out on the field and they They took Reggie to go to hospital. And I go out to pitch the cop the ninth inning and I have a four nothing lead and Erlichs me as I'm going up the steps that he says you know. We can't let that happen now. That's the only time ever heard him ever do it? And as it turned out you know. The first hitter was elrod. Hendricks he'd been traded to the Yankees Along with the Rick Dempsey tippy Martinez Trade. And whatever and I'm not gonNA throw it the guy that common no hitter so I actually hung occur ball and they'll rats live out to deep centerfield for the first down. Here comes Mickey rivers and trying to hit Mickey Rivers. Because anybody that ever saw me play was marvellous player. But he was always moving. I mean he was like you know the guy you know the arcade bear. You're trying to get with a rifle when you're a kid to win the win price. Well definitely four pitches to nick him in kind of in the not ribcage but really got his uniform and of course he goes down to first base You know Because it's four nothing plays Bu Powell behind him and then This would be no Eddie. Murray hadn't been I'm not even sure who was playing first at night but anyway played behind him. He steals second base because they give him the stolen base. Roy White done single in. Now it's four to one so I I lose my shutout. I ended up getting two outs. We win four to one. We go to Detroit early in the morning the next day and they macphail when I mean walk into my hotel in League scale phone rings and it's like hey how's the family. How's the weather by the way he said I read in the paper where you you said that you were protecting your team that I said. Yeah I said you know. Ask The empires doc yell from the Mount Everybody here. It didn't hurt in in the MEZZANINE. Anyway he says that's GonNa cost you five hundred dollars and is so so for you know hitting the one guy that Earl Weaver. Gopi to hit. Which was Nikki Nikki River? And I didn't hit him in the face. I mean Nick them in. The uniform cost five hundred dollars. I got the Joe Cronin Award because I did a lot of work with. Cystic fibrosis. Got Invited to get the award at the place. And I'm sitting next to Lee and he goes by the way he says you know. I'm never going to five hundred dollars so I said Oh. Yeah I'll send you the check. Well I forgot about it all winter and I get a telegram from the American League Office today before going to Pitch Opening Day in Baltimore. You see if you expect pitch you know tomorrow. I need to get the money. So that's that's the Earl Weaver Philosophy you know but Yeh Grand Jackson came over eat. Somebody UP IN SEATTLE EARL. Ran Out to the mound. He said take a look at our third. Baseman is our third baseman better than theirs. In Bucks at yeah and he goes labradors shortstop right around the field because early one. Anybody her you know he just realized that if we had really good clubs if you played on you know you play it and you didn't get hurt and you didn't let your ego and you know get in the way of good sense. We were GONNA lot of games. And that's why Earl Gotten Hall of fame and we went to six world series. I looked it up by the way you were talking. Lemay was your first Baseman For that particular game I WANNA ask you about pitching to to to various hall of famers and what that was like I. I looked up your numbers against Mickey Mantle. He was one for fourteen with seven strikeouts against you. The one hit a home run. What you remember about Pitch Nam? And what was that like as a young pitcher the first time well you know we put on all shifts now and I mean. I'm I'm not sure I'd be a big advocate. A lot of the chefs. But I think the first time I'd say Nikki hit a ground ball to my legs I go you know you know. I kinda hung my head and the aperture you show who you know ends up in. The hall of fame is playing shortstop for us. In sixty five you know catches it throws them out the the one hits you talk about happened in nineteen sixty six. I believe in you know Mickey was at the end of his career. You know in the sense that his knees were pretty much much better hitter. What he was facing lefthanded pitching getting right. And then of course I was right and so I got this. Just ride the on him so I strike him out the first time afternoon. Game at the stadium and He comes up the next time. I think maybe the bottom the six at the bottom of the seventh inning and each baron. Who was catching said Nick. Choking up he says yeah. I'M GONNA try to get that high fastball and I go to balls and no strikes on them and I look over and Guess. Who's on Deck Roger Ramirez now even at age twenty buster? I was smart enough to know. You are not going to pitch around key but the two you know with the two nothing lane onto and okay. Now you're GonNa try to give them some hit well. I talked a little bit off to try to throw a strike and there used to be football spotters. Box done the third deck just to the right of where the bullpens were both ends and back then were up there shoot and right field and up to shoot the you know the visiting team. Buffy Willie is splintered the box I mean it. It didn't go as high wasn't a game like you know. Robert Redford and the national in the national but it was close enough. And that's the only Nikki Mickey ever got off me but you know. I saw him hit his five hundred runoff. Stu Miller and at the stadium and somebody tweeted you. Know what are you doing now? You know your social distancing yourself. You're washing your hands trying to get some exercise you know probably watching more TV than you really need to do but somebody. I tweeted the other day. They said you know Mickey Mantle or did you grow up I said is that when Mickey Mantle. I mean I grew up in New York. I was adopted at birth I love the Yankees. My Dad just like billy crystal talks about city slickers he. He took me to the stadium in nineteen fifty four was a Tuesday night. It was before color television and when I walked up with that. You know up up up the stadium ramps. It was raining that night and I think Allie Reynolds pitch for the Yankees and make our C. Pitch for the Indians. I didn't like the Indians and fifty four is a beat. The Yankees would lose for the giants in the world series but that was my first time and then ten years later I came in and relief of a Frankie Bettina after. Fill.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred insists league isn't juicing the balls
"Good point September jar gassed he joins us longtime baseball insider I thought rob Manfred did a good job today talked on a couple of different platforms MLB network on radio also at the podium about the baseball's not being Jews he had to do that it's an integrity issue and he's confident that that's not the case even after Werner landers comments what was your big take away on that topic I have a proposal and I know the commissioner pretty well and I know he won't do it so I'll give you my proposal I say that on Friday when the sport resumes use last year's baseball take last year's baseball but I know that there's enough of them out there take last year's baseballs and use them for two weeks exclusively at the end of the two weeks compare the amount of home runs that are hit to the number of home runs and hit the two weeks prior to the all star break and then we can have a definitive conversation I have asked outside best general managers are best players are vast reporters what's up with the baseball since everyone has a different theory it's the cover is different the insides different delay things different that this is different I've heard a million different things and no one knows definitively and I'm not expecting anybody to know and what man for it you know and I've been very critical of Manfred and you know I'm not trying to say this to plug a podcast but on my sports to French podcasts he has been accused of being involved in the Cuban player trafficking issues he's been accused of allowing David or to use to associate himself with wanted criminals even he's done a lot of things on his watch that I have been very critical of it might gonna sit here and say without a shadow of a doubt there's something going on with the baseball there's something going on with the way the hitting is going the launch angle aspect of baseball has crossed this game and I told you these numbers twenty eighteen baseball had eleven thousand less balls in play in two thousand and eight we're not talking about the nineties the eighties the seventies I don't want to hear an old man saying who's better when Willie Mays in name Mickey mantle were in the game but that's not the argument the argument is this board is drastically different than ten years ago Manford should

"But that has served to really protect us and really buffer us with the cash flows coming in much much higher yields than what you could get incomparable maturity treasuries. So it's really been a blessing for us to be able to do that. Furthermore, the floating rate ones now, which our own large amount of our capital. Ten fifteen twenty twenty five million of our investors have own these and it's a large chunk of our capital. We've you that rightly or wrongly as quasi liquidity we could sell those tomorrow. And certainly there could be liquidity issue someday, we go into an OA timeframe. But the point is they're all investment grade. Rated the yields are phenomenal. We're getting paid wonderfully. But if we could find really compelling opportunities, we'd be happy to sell them. It's interesting. I love. Chatting with my discretionary, fundamental managers. We wrote a book on thirteen f investing and the managers that I really am drawn to or the ones that have holdings that are not your traditional kind hedge fund hotel holdings, but the ones that I look at and I'm often like I'm never heard of that or they're slightly different. You know, hearing you talk about this reminds me of the old green black book you too can be a stock market genius that talked about spinoffs and all sorts of different investment styles. And it's fun to listen to you talk about those. There's a couple of the things I wanna talk about otherwise, I could just talk stocks day. And we might have to do that. Against time. But for Quant like me, I could listen to chats about this for endless amount of time. You mentioned buffet being a early influence as well as Berkshire being a longtime holding you know, as the crew gets on and their years. I think Charlie's in his mid nineties. We go to the listeners if you haven't been to Omaha, but even more intimate would be the daily journal meeting here in Los Angeles, which I think just recently happened. So gotta wait till next year highly recommended, but current opinion about the state of Berkshire as well as -pinion on the company in the stock in this day and age holding fifteen percent plus in virtually every account, and so we're not budging. And that's a great question. Charlie just turned ninety five January first and Warren, Mr. buffets gonna turn eighty nine on August thirtieth. So certainly those are issues I think he's done as much as humanly possible to prepare it for the future, the businesses very different than what it was when he was the driver. With the public equity portfolio, and the look through earnings valuation model, the reason we haven't sold it, even though certainly there's no one on the planet. I mean, Mr. buffet is unique there's icons in different industries will Chamberlain in basketball. Bill. Russell, Michael, Jordan Gretzky and hockey's got more assists and anybody else has total points. Not even counting his goals. He can go on and on and on Bill Walton and college basketball and Babe Ruth in baseball Mickey Mantle the irony is, I think Mr. buffet is not an icon in just one sport. He's an amalgamation of all the people. I just mentioned. So there's no one gonna come around again like him. He's unique he special. He's totally irreplaceable. He's tried to to to help the firm thal for some of that by buying many businesses. Burlington, Northern etc. So the wholly owned companies today. Mid American, which is almost wholly totally owned. But all the companies today are really the driving force in. Berkshire. And I wish he didn't even have much of a equity portfolio or stock portfolio. But he hasn't been able to find opportunities. But the reason we haven't sold as one I think there's incredible. And I think that's obvious today. There's enormous underlying value in the businesses that Berkshire owns, and I know he would never want it broken apart. And certainly we're not proposing that, but I just think if you look at each of the individual businesses, they're just worth enormous amounts of money. I think it'd be complex to do anything because the ownership in different insurance subsidiaries and so forth. But we just think the underlying value is enormous. The second thing is which we try not to think about a lot..

That's not first ballot. But he's young. I mean, he was so he was in the MLB at nineteen. Trout's only six months older here. Mclovin. Mickey Mantle you guys are that bars. But that's a great player, but there's gonna be more than one hall of Famer and rather have Mukhi bats Bryce Harper as a right now prices not included. I have to as a fan Bryce Harper. But he's a lefty and he hits ridiculous home runs. As if I was GM. Probably Mookie Betts Greyfield or to Aaron judge Bryce Harper. I'd have to look at numbers. Maybe. Right. Are they the same age? Yeah. They probably pretty close there. Christian yelich or Bryce Harper. Price. Harvey's says have as many years a proven done how the track record yet. He could get hot and sustain it. He's got to stay healthy. Yeah. That's a factor. Yes. If I'm if I'm spending that money on an everyday guy for you to come out and see nobody's gonna come out. And, you know, watch Bryce Harper limp around on crutches or something. So you guys don't think he's headed hall of fame beginning of his career just start show early accumulate huge number. Yeah. Is he going to win? The playoffs a lot more than trout. I mean almost every year and who's got a better team to wasn't like set for last year team is they spent you got MAC. Sure tsar. So you got the best pitcher in baseball. At least arguably they've spent money they got a, you know, the nationals had a really good team. That was a really good team. And a lot of young talent in Harper's healthy. They're good team. What he's not. They've they've not threat. Yes, pawn. Yeah. But harbors had seasons with where is healthy with five hundred at bats where he hit two forty three and two forty nine. We're not saying he's Anna Kournikova were just saying the the star power and the production don't match yet one season. It did. The rest of the seasons were good two seasons. He just got hurt in the second. Well, but that season that you don't get full credit for it. If he wasn't going to the Phillies, would you be defending him this much McClay by favorite player to watch and baseball by at least one hundred fold like trout, I would never tune into Harper. I try and watch sports, and he's really, okay. But that's thrilling duty hit says lefty homers. His swing is. So pretty he's really really fun to watch. I you know, how I like lefties dead to none died. Williamson Bryce Harper. They we we could debate production and all that stuff all day. That's fine. But the guy's a star. There's no there's absolutely no debate to the fact that Bryce Harper had whatever star quality is he has that in despite you know, he's a brand. Absolutely. He's the old Dell Beckham junior a baseball in my opinion that is such perfect now Z because I'll watch Odell over guys even Tonio Brown to me. Odell Beckham more exciting. Tony exciting. Yes. Yes. Absolutely. Absolutely. Most home runs at citizens Bank ballpark by non Philly players David Wright is number one on that list. A lot of states or purple, and if we hold the side the gerrymander districts, what advice would you provide to try and win that great purple middle? It's something that for some reason. The two major parties have not employed. Systematically, it's something called the convert communicator, which is what somebody who used to believe the other side and now testifies Ono. And then I realized or I saw something or this happened to me it could be for example in healthcare issue. I you know, I was in an opponent of this. And then I got sick or my son got sick. These are always interesting because I ended up finding out a lot about people that that I wouldn't have found out otherwise and let me start with what's the most important thing that people don't know about your background. I had a chance to play minor league baseball instead of go to school really was a center fielder. And I wanted to be Willie Mays or Mickey Mantle and the the scout. It would you would have taken a very different path on your career. I had tremendous accuracy as a pitcher in high school, and I could throw a a wicked fastball. No breaking ball can't throw curve, you're done. So similarly, but that's interesting. I know what will you a decent hitter? I was a good hitter. And I get a jump on the ball. But I I couldn't hit a slider. So tell us about some of your early mentors who influenced you either academically or professionally. Yeah, you know once. Again, I I've got academic mentors. I'm not sure how good the Bengals. I feel like the Bengals are better than the dolphins. Yeah. I keep wondering how they're using Ryan tannehill and what they really have then because the Bengals have pretty bad defense. They kind of dominated them. I was watching the bills game just, I mean, Josh Allen. He's he's got nimble feet for being a guy that big any any does. Burt Reynolds, star of "Boogie Nights" and "Smokey and the Bandit," dies at 82
"It Burt Reynolds movie star who played it for grins dies at eighty two. And they talk about well right here. The ex-jock jock from Florida starred in deliverance and boogie nights. But preferred making such populist fun fair as smokey and the bandit the Campbell run and starting over. That's that's kind of what he always loved doing until much later in his career. And he was the biggest box office star in the world at one at one time. Yeah, this is well written. I read part of this again, this is Hollywood reporter Reynolds who received an Oscar nomination when he portrayed porn director Jack corner in. Boogie nights. Nineteen ninety seven was the number one box office attraction for a five year stretch starting in the late nineteen seventies for five straight years. Wow. Half a decade, and obviously before and after that still enormous, but I mean, number one for half a decade. He died this morning at Jupiter medical center in Florida. According to his manager. This is a little sad though, beloved by audiences for his brand of frivolous. Good old boy fair the playful Reynolds rarely was embraced by the critics the first time he saw himself in boogie nights. He was so unhappy he fired his agent he went on to win a Golden Globe. But lost out in the Oscar supporting actor race to Robin Williams for Robin Williams role in goodwill hunting, and they say it was a very bitter disappointment for Burt Reynolds. And then he had said this. This was later in a memoir called. But enough about me Burt Reynolds says I didn't open myself to new writers or risky parts. Because I wasn't interested in challenging myself as an actor. I was interested in having a good time. As a result. I missed a lot of opportunities to show I could play serious roles by the time. I finally woke up. Up and tried to get it. Right. Nobody would give me a chance. Yeah. So he wasn't entirely satisfied with his career. But it's just so funny because my God he was like the ultimate movie star required for quite a while. And he was married to Lani Anderson. How many times was he married? Didn't he marry Sally field or were they just an item? I can't even remember, man. I can't I don't know. And you said he was married to Lani. I believe you. I wouldn't have known if he was only dating her. Messier divorces in Hollywood. Did they I think they did? Yeah. I didn't remember any of it. But. And it's weird that he hated himself in boogie nights. I thought he was I thought it was good in boogie nights. I guess he did maybe just didn't like the rule. I dunno. I thought it was good. I thought he was kind of like a like a tragic figure in that movie. I remember a funny thing. Now, you know, these are like these old Hollywood stories. So who knows if this is true? But this this is what I once read that both. He and Clint Eastwood. Were under contract for so many movies. And this is like before they were huge. They were not movie stars yet. But they were under some small contract for so many movies from the same studio, and they both get called into the office by this big shot at the same time. And he was tearing up the contracts paid them off whatever it was a small thing. They weren't they weren't big movie stars yet. And the way that they were both let go the story had it that he pointed. I at Burt Reynolds and said, you you can't act and then points at Clint Eastwood and said, you your Adam's apple is too. Big. You're out and he gets rid of. And the story was that they walk down. All I want this to be true. They walked down the hall. They get into the elevator. They're both quiet for second. It's only them and Burt Reynolds says man, you're the one I feel sorry for and Clinton says why Bert says, well, I can always learn to act. You can't do a damn thing about that. Adam's apple. Typical always a jokester. I hope that's the true story. But freaking knows. All right. Well. This is like one of those deaths where wow, it was huge name. "The other thing we talked about a little bit the yankee uniform things the big kerfuffle over that with the nicknames i don't think it's a big deal at all it's not as if they are saying now permanently yankees you're going to have nicknames on their uniforms now the blue and a different colour and they will wear pinstripes anymore is talking about a week and it's a clear attempt the major league baseball the make money and the secondary thing or maybe the primary thing is to appeal to younger people who like to abbreviate names my you know we we take the first initial and the first three letters of the last name a rod things like that and that's kind of a millennial thing that has caught on and nicknames are a big tradition in baseball you know we always had nicknames of splendid splinter the hammer and hank aaron and mickey mantle the commerce kid let's go back a ways but you know you've got all those things going so it's you know it's a bald attempt to make a lot of money and that's what that's what businesses do these days try to make a lot of money phones are opened by the way eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six the other thing the sniping with the mets and the yankees and it's it's really funny both teams are trying to portray the other as cheap now the mets obviously if you're met fannie mae have a history rj the wealth as all spend money they got caught off at may of all this kind of stuff and you know that so it's easy for the yankees to say yeah well the mets coulda gotten better players from us negga from cleveland but they were cheap they didn't wanna pay part of the salary then the mets turn around and go well you gave us now not great players plus you expected us to pay part of the salary so you know we're not idiots klapisch as i said reported that jeff will pond told alderson after he had set up the deal don't trade with the yankees we don't want to do this we got subway series coming up we don't want duda were you know.

"When he came up i saw an old there slower mickey mantle played more free space than center field in the world very late sixties and early 70s also i cannot speak a directly myself i'm not quite old enough to be able to say i remember mantle when he came to the big leagues i wish it good but i can always go mostly big if he when he was way during earn career but not about later for the no i and it believe it or not and some people i got some yankee fans who hate me for this because they knew i grew up met guide to my father started work implemented 1960s do that but a friend of mine it was his birthday class made a mine i had already taken into amid game he and his father took me to mickey mantle day the day that they had the ceremony for mickey in his last season and the like and it stood for me forever as the longest standing ovation i've ever seen in my life and i reject a we little kids or seemed like went on forever and ever ever and our neighbor but it was great and i was in the stadium that day so i was there for mickey mantle day but that's the mic i remember i didn't see him play centerfield he came up in the fifties i didn't start watching baseball told nineteen sixty nine by danny would still play and some centerfield by the early seventy the mood pretty much time to first base the injuries have taken their toll on them still when he hit it when he caught it right when somebody made a mistake he could still hit the prodigious home runs in the i'd one of the the prettiest our swings ever certainly that i've ever seen to land and i would still say that today but i i can't speak to mickey mantle and what his arrival meant to the yankees what kind of player he was when he was young now now good tick off some more yankee fans because i'm gonna pointed out just a fact jack and you have to deal with it i've been blumenauer semi praise of erin judge today gifted before if you been listening to me here on a fan.

"Seven seven three three seven six six six six let's go to joe in new york here on the fan joe yes sir good morning richard morning joe uh i was hoping you could clarify something for me and it is a simple question about mickey mantle like you like i'm batting average i believe was to ninety eight about five hundred thirty six home runs i'm not sure the rbi but there's a lot of guys who had better lifetime fat then you and i'm just wondering why the great i mean i'm not denigrating the cannot believe me fair but i'm just wondering why you know because guys have better fat why is he elevated above people okay well first of all i play for the anc he's and he played when the yankees were every year in the world series waning winning winning winning also he was let's face it he was a muscular very handsome all american looking guy which helped he had a lot of charisma so plane in new york with all the charisma elevated him in a lot of people's minds plus he was a great player and there was a book about mickey mantle by jane levy several years back and the dispute was weather openly maize was better hank aaron was better mickey mantle and she had some saver metric people analyze mantle's numbers versus their numbers and they came up with you know back back in the day with mickey mantle was home runs rv is batting average and and this saber metric people do war winds above replacement all you know all those things and they proved that mickey mantle was better than the other two now that's that is caused for some dispute because i think a lot of people will go well willing as was the best player ever all around player and hank aaron was my favorite and certainly a lifetime career more home runs and a lot of people say well he played longer there's some merit to plane longer taking care of yourself which mickey obviously didn't do when admitted in his later years you didn't take care of himself but mickey you know if you wanna go by saver metrics.
