Los Angeles Angels Suspend Pitching Coach Mickey Callaway Over Alleged Lewd Behavior
"The angels have suspended pitching coach. Mickey callaway in the wake of a report by the athletic in which five women accused callaway of lewd behavior. Major league baseball on the angels are hoping to wrap up an investigation relatively soon perhaps before the start of spring training that is according to a source to espn.
Angels suspend pitching coach Callaway after misconduct report
"There is an ugly story floating around today involving the angels pitching coach. Go ahead okay. So this was reported last night. Pay the athletic. Mickey callaway is currently the pitching coach for the angels. He's been suspended and the reason. Why is five. Women have accused him of lewd behavior. All of these women are in the media so this is very similar to the story that got jeered porter fired as the gm of the mets last week. The story from the athletic is very detailed. And i'll just read from part of the story. It says calloway aggressively pursued at least five women who work in sports media sending three of them inappropriate photographs and asking one of them to send nude photos in return. He sent them unsolicited electronic messages and regularly commented on their appearance in a manner that made them uncomfortable. In one instance thrust his crotch near the face of a reporter as she interviewed him in another. He told one of the women that if she got drunk with him. He chair information about the mets that one paragraph and i would encourage people who are interested in the story to go to the athletic and read it. If you hear that one paragraph you think well this guy. It's going to be like jared porter. He'll be fired today. Yeah he has not been fired today. And the reason for that is that in california and i don't know if this is different than in new york but in california you are entitled if you claim that you didn't do these things and he does claim that he didn't do it right then. You're entitled to an investigation before they can fire you so He since calloway has denied all wrongdoing that under california labor law. He's entitled to an investigation before he has terminated so the angels have suspended him so he ended up the team's not meeting right now anyway so we don't know when the baseball season's going though but mickey callaway is probably not going to be the pitching coach. The they're probably be some due process here and then they'll eventually fire him and the angels won't have a lot of time to go out and find a new pitching coach. We don't even know when the baseball season is going to start right. Baseball players union wants to start at the normal time. The owners want it to be pushed forward a month so spring training and march as opposed february players wanted to start in february on time. And there's a big disagreement go figure a big disagreement between the players and the owners in major league baseball right so we don't know when the baseball season going to start but back to this. Calloway story It is what i've learned. And what i learned in when we reported that cheered porter story is this is. This goes on with all sorts of female reporters in all sorts of sports. And i. there's no other way to handle this then to develop zero-tolerance people aren't getting it. I can't imagine ever sending a what was it. That porter sent forty one unanswered techs. And now this guy. Mickey callaway desert to five different female reporters. The these people are trying to do their jobs. What are what are you not getting here. I think anybody who did with jared porter did or what mickey calloway did meets professional help. They need it. Didn't need to go to a psychiatrist. And and so. You agree by the way this investigation. That means you're trying to dot. Every i and cross every t they wanna make sure they've got a rock solid case. Get all the evidence together all of it together and say here's the case why you're getting fired. He suspended he ultimately will be fired. There's no way am if this story is one hundred percent accurate. We have no reason to believe it. Isn't it seems very well sourced but i mean you're you are innocent until proven guilty in this world so he should have a chance now but wait. Wait what if you look at the story. And there's proof of the phone and it says in the story lays it all out like the in this story itself there's proof of screenshots of these text messages and appropriate text messages and they said that they saw the lincoln messages and they saw the emails. I mean just from our point of view without doing any type of investigation. Don't you think that that right. There is enough to be like okay. There's plenty of proof here to show that at least you know. But you've gotta your own investigation. You can't say all right. The athletic to the investigation. Let's run with this because right now. It's the athletic versus mickey callaway. Calloway's denying it didn't happen but can't the angels say we don't want somebody that's being accused of that by multiple people on our team whether it all you got gotta be careful if you fire somebody for 'cause they and somehow this is wrong but if it's just a moral thing it's a character clause like the you know like the whole thing he's going but he's going to be fired he's going to fire all they want is to say here's the case. Here's all the pins. Mickey lewd deny it yet lindsay wing differences and make if they've suspended him now and they're in. The plan is to fire him as soon as they carry out this investigation. So he's not around the team. He's not employees he suspended. He's out the bad look for them not to just fire them right off the bat because like saying that they need to have an investigation is basically saying that you know there. There's if they're prolonging the inevitable like you guys say like that's what they're doing basically what the difference that they fire him today or in two

"If there's an injury, which is like, totally confirming, the report will not confirm it or just the Mets. But baseball is one of these weird places where the general manager, we would agree has more power and important then the manager. And yet it somehow frowned upon that the general manager the. The boss who can fire, you would tell the manager, what to do like as if the manager as Mickey Callaway as if mother bleeper, spewing. Mickey Callaway has earned the right to not listen to his bosses. Well, let's you said he's a second year manager of little accomplishment. If you're talking about a fifteen year manager who's won a couple of championships. The that's a whole different situation who's taking the lead from a former sports agent who's now running a team. That's correct. I don't think that has to do with a lack of respect to because I mean, this guy's coming from the agency world. So I imagine it does something to their dynamic. I don't know what the hell's going on there. But I love the fact that used to be tempting bows, agent because, you know, it's a point he just going to call them up. And now apparently he's making you know he's calling the shots. So he's going to tell them, you gotta play Tibo everyday. Mike. Can you just play the sound of Mickey Callaway returning to apologize because this is the guy who's using mother bleeper and then not apologizing well enough? And I don't know if somebody what, what did Brodie van wagon and send him back down to apologize, again the initial apology, wasn't even an apology. Just him stating facts like Billy Morton wants punched the guys. I didn't punch any should've seen what it was like in lebatardshow bloated two thousand back way back in the free wheeling days of two thousand seven this was commonplace. Just real quick. You know, I understand that get some feedback that, you know, I wanted you to know that in my, my meeting, Tim, I apologize for my reaction. I regret it. I regret the, you know the distraction. It's calls to the team like I said earlier, something that will learn from, it's something I'm not proud of. I'm not proud of the distraction. I'm not proud of what I did the temp for that. I'm definitely sorry, such a constipated apology. That is absolutely someone who's apologizing for reaction and not an action. I like the start of it was got some feedback. I gotcha. I got some feedback, and I've reevaluated this, but you understand the concept of, of feeding middle managers, this kind of power in a way that they would object to someone like their boss Brody van wagon to tell them, what to do Jason Vargas. His opponent. He was laying. Dan school. Greg, Cody on the ESPN radio..

"Also be abundantly clear when i say this mickey callaway is not a very good manager i don't think that is but i think that mickey callaway is a very decent person a good man and a good baseball man probably in the wrong city probably in the wrong league and probably in the wrong position on he's a manager yet even though he is one you know what i mean i think it was too big of a transition from a pitching coach in the american league when there's no double switches in the just the nuance of the game is different to all of a sudden managing in new york with all the intangibles that the nationally present all right so i could very easily started this show and turn this into a oh my god you know not mickey's gotta go jason the one guy who should know better probably jason vargas has to know better relaxed jason take it easy there's a couple of reporters that i know and one of them's an old school guy while the matthews who i love and if you're a big boxing fan you know wally if you ever pulled that now used to work with while the back of the day if you ever if you ever pull that nonsense wally wally would confront that have been wally would knock them down i mean there's certain guys i don't know the what is the name healy what mike he'll be right from the from newsday a not immersed in the day to day local scene i'm a national host i really don't read newsday quite frankly i don't have any need to from what i've deduced i did certainly check in f._a._a. earlier you know and even people who do this daily they don't really know much about him because he's relatively new to the scene in this in this in this aspect but those who do know mounts for being very decent guy so the root of this issue apparently is he said i'll see you tomorrow to mickey callaway this was after you know mickey tough loss i get a three run bomb nine question Tough loss. No question. but i thought everything kinda simmer down and then when mickey was leaving this reporter said i'll see you tomorrow now some took that as and i i'm going to give the reporter of the benefit of the doubt as i'm giving mickey for just having a bad day mickey shouldn't be fine or penalized or apologize give me a break do anything wrong again is a little different he should know better make lunging at a reporter commute break but the reporters in the eyes of some again which i would agree with it was a way of him saying hey i'll see you tomorrow i don't know if you'll be here tomorrow because you just got your pitching coach fired and i think we all smart enough to know that you're next and again i'm just again deducing connecting dots you know these are the storylines with the mets i don't think it was said in a flipping arrogant condescending derisive way i just don't and if he said it that way then maybe he deserved to get stuff to maybe i don't think he's that kind of guy 'cause people who really know him bouncers character and you know i trust those people who were speaking about this gentleman so what does this really mean i think it's that big of a deal i really don't mike your new york die miss something there well i think i think you have more closely with the vargas thing right i think the problem is when your manager and you're the leader of men and you act this way towards a reporter and then one of your players lashes out and has to be restrained and held back from tacking the guy had he just said m effort or called him whatever you call them calloway but that's all he did vargas his actions are separate but that's what you had had that been the only thing you know what a cared is because vargas went after him now mix calloway looked like he i don't want to instigate you let the match tensions but that's not fair why i know what you're saying when you're the manager it's your job to control your players to an extent and if they're going to feel like they have a free rein the latitude of talking about a culture it's a culture to feel the freedom to do that route that on even in a very passive way drop that on calloway's doorstep i mean generally speaking when you know whether it's a college coach we talk about his program whether he had any knowledge of certain things you should have when you're a professional manager you're managing egos and you're managing millionaires and adult men and you kind of have to know how to control them by doing it the first time mapping the guy the first time yup fine to come back afterwards and do it again and get him out of here were you doing your instigating your guys to be pissed off he's not he's not old guy he's a kid i think probably twenties maybe thirty he's young yeah yeah so you're you're you're kind of nudging your guys maybe not to lunge at him but to certainly take action in some other way okay i i want to get into this what hit a different angle coming up here one eight five five two one two forty two twenty seven i think at the root of all of this will definitely take calls because a couple of different ways to see this and you can obviously.

"So I don't know who else to credit. Other people are also saying that just so you know what, what is going to be around? Yep. You know what Tim, making honestly? I mean, he could have been fired opinion ended eight lifted. He's a great human being. You want to. Nice. You want to hang out and have a beer with. But you know what? Dick between the Mediterranean. You know, the metro always going to be second class citizens. They're not going to spend the money. But every so often they're going to have. One. Spent enough money this off season. Point. All right. So look at is that have had success with. Right. But when you know you had you had right? And Bobby Valentine guy like Mickey Callaway. That caught up in New York. The guy can you imagine a midway somewhere? He doesn't have a cool that nice guy but he doesn't have a clue. He's deal with deal with always going to be pretty iky. He doesn't have to buy it's like he just I mean, you gotta show a little bit of. But you don't. Based here. On the ice. And that's why I'm overpaid. Several us lazy. That's all I got him. Have a great night. Here's the thing. I don't like name calling. I know I'm in the minority on that in this world. We live in. I understand it. I don't do it. And I actually wear that with pride. I don't love it. I don't love it at all. In fact, it really bothers me you could've made the same point and said the name Robinson canot and made just as strong point as it was you want a manager fire during his first season during his first season, you wouldn't fired and you want him to give the right answers. Okay. I, I actually thought today he gave some pretty good answers. I think he's giving some decent answers this season but managers today and coaches aren't gonna throw their players under the bus. You think Pat Shurmur criticizes the giants as post game press conferences? The giants won five games. Heynen criticizes players in post game press conference, no coach or manager is going to do that now. And again, this goes back to kind of the old school, the old days that everyone that some people, especially a lot of callers here wanna have return, we've moved past a lot of that. And again, if you think a manager is all powerful, and making all these decisions himself, that's just not baseball anymore. It is organizationally decided. What the lineup is, or perhaps, when a certain player should take a break. A day off. Why Wilson romo's can't feed the catching of Jacob degrom to Nido because as Mickey has said, we'll, sometimes you need Wilson to, to catch three or four days in a row, three days in a row that might that might upset that plan. It's not just on the manager. I understand the calls for Calloway, and you know what for forty eight hours. You'd feel good about it. And if the Mets won a series, right afterwards you you'd say, oh, there you go. It's hard for me to believe that that would fundamentally change the Mets are. But if it would that would be a move. They should make. Heyman Puma here with us. And I'm sure in the New York Post and others have said that. Callaway will survive at least the short term. Short term meaning tomorrow. Let's go to Ray. In Rockville centre. What's up Brian? Hi, kim. How are you? Good. How are you? Quick quick comment. Mickey Callaway quick question. I, I agree with you, that it's not doesn't bowl to the manager, especially with at Olympic. However, a lot of people are saying that the Mets are not motivated. And to me, that is a primary role of the Magara with one of the motivator. My question really has to do with physician in baseball called the D H the Boston when the time of poppy had the position, Oppy was the D H, the Yankees tend to use it as a place to rest, their players, do you think there's a strategic difference in how they use the thing?.

"And cesspit as you're not going to be a competitive team next year so there's a lot that the mets have to soar through or or at least explained to the fans what the heck is going on as far as this goes in and here's more from callaway and Again he wasn't aware of Cessna's his comments but was asked about assessment it's getting this. Surgery soon or whether the organization thinks he should wait I think we just need to continue to have, him reevaluated you know by the by the experts that know you, know everything about what he's got Yeah, and then the team wasn't worried about his heels coming into this we thought his heels were in a really good. Spot coming in or we wouldn't have activate them so you know. He was good, to go we had obviously numerous conversations with him and the people that were working them out and he was in. A good spot as far as what the doctors have advised. Yo or or know about it I wasn't in the room if he got some kind of advice so you. Know be tough for me to speculate on anything at this point and. Is more, than a few beat, writers tweeted, today and that's don't make, their medical staff available, to the media so this really Mickey Callaway is the conduit to. Get the kind of information of what the organization is thinking and he. Apparently is in the dark on all of this right now so again, the Mets got a you know sort out some of this but it is It's alarming if you're a fan. And his team, and obviously this isn't anything. New there have been issues for years as far as injuries decimating the team to, the lack of communication about them and I think you'd get a window into even within the organization there is a. Lack of communication about what is what's happening here so all we. Know is desperate, says he's thinking about a surgery though cost eight to ten months to fix his heels and that might be able. To prevent him from having the the quad and hip flexor. Problems that have cost him so much time over the last couple of years so there's some good news in. There that there is a fix but what is that fixed the Mets. In agreement, that he should have, that kind, of fix it kind of, feels to me Like Carlos BELTRAN, back in two thousand nine, two thousand ten off, season remember, BELTRAN went out and had knee surgery against the teams wishes and I. Missed some time in that two thousand ten season but he, ended up having a longer career maybe because he did? Have, that surgery in the Mets you, know we're, not police about that don't they had, a plan in place that he. Could work through it over the course of the final two years of his contract to instead he just went. Out and got a fixed so is similar assessment this isn't saying. He needs to have the surgery wants to have the surgery to. Say he's thinking about having the surgery, so again you try to make sense of what's happening here but you need more, from the Mets to determine what's going on and by the way today the Mets get the Yankees they get sunny gray really struggled especially at home for the Yankees. In ERA over aids at Yankee Stadium you like the way the, pitching sets up in this? Series which the gram going tomorrow night for the New York Mets. But have a heck of a Time today now Matt's is thrown very well for the Mets. In recent months but Jared, familiar is unavailable out of, the bullpen because the, Mets are, working on a trade and we've heard the Oakland Athletics all of last. Night's we'll see what happens there but Seth Lugo through fifty, six pitches last night and Robert Salman through forty four? C., gotta think if a million's unavailable Lugo and gas would be as well and. The Mets. Are going to. Be without three of their best relievers and I'm going. To be trying to iron this one down if they have a lead late, with, Anthony Swartz act Jerry. Blevins and you name it out outta that Mets bullpen so they'll, be playing shorthanded today and that will certainly be something to keep an eye on as they get later in today's game all, right we'll come back tell you what's hot drive, around the majors much more this is Mets on deck with people Carthy on the voice of.

"The pieces to win right now no i don't i think it would behoove the manager though mickey callaway actually call it like he sees it and i understand that it's july i understand you need to work with these players for the rest of the season you don't wanna lose your team and had them to new out but in all these updates from harris allen and the cuts that he plays of mickey callaway have you heard a negative one and it's not because harris doesn't wanna play the negative cut it's because there's not that exist and mickey callaway is never negative about his team and in a place like new york if you don't call it like how it is you're going to be called out and you will quickly turn into an enemy and that's what micky calloway's realize the first two weeks of the season we were genuflecting to mickey callaway oh mickey could do no wrong what a selection and then when you suffer some adversity and you don't recognize that adversity publicly that's when you put yourself in a hole that it's going to be very tough to dig yourself out on and there's gonna be a lot of people pouring dirt and sand into that whole against you so when you look at the mets and we try to determine who they are going to keep in who they are going to trade i believe there will be some traits but i'm not convinced there's going to be players that are brought back that are going to be part of this core for the future now if you trade degrom you would anticipate and you would demand that you get people back that will be on this team in the future but it doesn't appear and a lot can change from now until the deadline if they get blown away by an offer they get blown away but right now is because we sit here on this july six it does not appear that the mets are gonna trade the grammar syndergaard right now how much you gonna get back for zack wheeler or steve matt's i don't think you're gonna get a whole lot back because they have been healthy so maybe the mets traded frazier you won't get anything back that's expected to be great for top frazier maybe they trade drubel cabrera who's had a nice season but you're not gonna get a shirt thing back for a gerbil cabrera maybe if you get a fortuitous bouncing you have a prospect that was looked at as an out to be and turns out to be very good so the mets i know there's a lot of intrigue with what are you going to do and who are you going to trade who you gonna keep but i don't think a lot of moves are gonna make this deadline is going to impact the future just like last year as well what you know about the mets though is this a terrible baseball team right now and there's almost no reasons why you should continue to watch them other than your just addicted to the team and you'll love the team and its baseball so you're always gonna watch it then you get into the yankees and it's the complete antithesis the yankees are a bright story the yankees are a great that story and you know what the expectations were before the year and they even got and grew greater with the additions of two young studs and glacier tours and miguel and do heart and now torres suffers the first adversity of his career with the hip and i know we had the surgery in the offseason to overcome that in the minor leagues but now there's a different part of the body and he suffers a hip injury and you won't seem until after the all star break you just hope it doesn't linger the yankees though wind up is so ridiculous and they had so many prodigious home runs at a record setting pace that i don't think they miss a beat i don't standing i remember all the panicking that went on at the yankees earlier in the year not worth it bad trade aaron boone doesn't know what he's doing and i remember i was in late april those are.

"You used to be anymore and mickey callaway new skipper for the team after replacing you know terry collins who had been there such a long time it seems like each and every day we're getting something different out of mickey callaway on whereas team is at you know i think that overall when he struggles the balls just up a little bit and he is missing that sink that makes him a really good pitcher so you know when he gets the ball up they're getting hits you know the kind of singled him to death and then the walk and it just didn't quite get the ball where he wanted to also the mets lose to the appearance ritz they've now lost back to back games both of them by payer franz air at city field and i mean it's not like pittsburgh you know lights the world on fire anywhere so when you look at a pittsburgh team this is a team that's below five hundred but the mets now i mean fourteen games below five hundred after being ten games above five hundred if you do the math on that you're talking about dropping twenty four straight if you will eight five five three two three four nbc is the number but you look at his drubel cabrera i mean here's a guy who's in the hardy your order here he is a second baseman you know a hell of a hitter but wilmer floor as and the mets have some talent there but but who's the big guy who's giving you your pop i mean todd frazier he's on the down slope of his career you know built his name with the reds and the white sox and goes to the yankees and just you know crosses over the river frazier's hitting to seventeen on the are like a devon maserati go but it seems to me like some talents on this roster but maybe as a bi level area look the mets are based on pitching we know that wasn't just a few years ago that we were talking about them being the next solid awesome rotation you have the dark nights and what matt harvey was able to do harvey's not even with the team anymore harvey and noah syndergaard thor right without those long blond locks flowing that he has aaron jacob degrom that's that's a that's a talented trio that you have you got zack wheeler when he came over from the giants i believe that was when they rented a player and tried to get carlos beltran for the stretch run you never panned out in san francisco later went on to win a world series and we saw him on his way out with the astros last year mere shell of himself but still was able to get a dump but the giants gave up a very talented prospect in zack wheeler so it's been about the pitching for the mets and that back into the bullpen when you look at swore zach when you look at a familiar as well but familiar i mean didn't get anybody out he gave up four runs all of them earned on three base hits as well how does he already move up to three and a half which is where you'd like to see a starter if you talk to pitching coaches they'll say look give me an er of four or less and i'm ecstatic with that because how good these hitters are in the day and age we live in with major league baseball that's that's really about all you can expect but out of the bullpen you'd expect a little bit better simply because they don't rack up as many innings but wheeler there is a fine and capable starting pitcher as well but there is some talent throughout the course of this roster and jay bruce who has had some issues you know playing and delivering this year for the mets after signing that deal coming over you was excited like everybody is in march and april and especially the way the season starts out in april and jerry seinfeld's go into the games we're told getting excited falling in love with his mets again and then here we are and that's right now just just a disaster to be able to watch in this certainly a team that doesn't need the off the field news with sandy alderson but certainly again we're thinking of sandy alderson our thoughts are are going out to him eight five five three two three four nbc but he has taken a leave of absence from the team citing health reasons but it's mostly including the recurring bout with cancer and of.

New York Mets on Matt Harvey 'partying' report
"Pitching the next night in san diego out of the bullpen gave up a home run in that game certainly not ideal optics there for matt harvey and his general manager sandy alderson with his thoughts i don't think it was in this case but the other thing is matt has to understand that people always notice what he does and we were talking today it's like a borderline pitch in his case it's all it always gets called a strike you know as a as a hitter take that pitch don't take that pitch seems like he always it's always called the strike and probably learned something from it sandy are you upset by that report usually i get it i get upset if the report is unexpected so i guess short answer is no the not unexpected behavior for matt harvey according to the gm sandy alderson in sandy sounded like someone who's had to do a few too many of these kinds of press conferences about is one time star pitcher now pitching out of the bullpen with a five point seven six era and fed up you know talking about it and while it might not have been a major problem in this case it is part of an ongoing issue with matt harvey now mickey callaway was a little more open about it in terms of had a conversation with matt harvey but remember sandy's been through this for years and years and years this is the first time the mickey callaway is don't like with something like this remain harvey and you'll remember back in the off season the mets consider dealing harvey at the winter meetings and it was calloway as well as dave islands who thought that you know they could get matt harvey pitching well again and they wanted him to stick around they saw some things they liked on tape we haven't seen that in games thus far and you know another strike against matt harvey on with this issue we'll dive more into your own assessment is being back in the starting lineup tremendous news for the new york mets coming up preview this series a little bit but every tuesday night we have a chance to chat with.
