"Democratic campaign operative. Who told me that if money can buy you an election. Tom Style would not be pulling it two percent. Obviously you need more than that. But money's necessary to stay alive. Stay afloat and that's what these candidates are struggling with including Buddha. Judge Luther a lot of money in the month of January. We know that there is the story that there is a sort of boot blue funder for him then started giving money to vote so there's sort of a mutual beneficial to the problem. I think the change about Super Tuesday. That's been the most significant has been because it's also got Texas in it. Those are hugely expensive state to advertise right and their campaigns that have been organizing the whole time in those states but the Bloomberg changed things. I'm not excusing. What warranty. But but the President Thomas. Dyer moved from both got people interested. Candidates not heard of MUNCI- early in that process of Mike Bloomberg meant that the first candidate people were seeing for months in the in Texas California and to California. Was Mike Bloomberg. Yeah so yeah they. They've not been there organized earlier than him. He's opened a lot of campaign offices. I was on the trail with him in Texas about a month ago and he has rallies people show up to them but they have. They are all going to be disadvantaged by Mike Lindbergh's money that said they are fairly competitive in Elizabeth Warren. A lot of polls taken. Now we're before debate gaps. You probably is weaker in those polls than she might be right now she was competitive with Bloomberg and Texas. Despite all this despite not running an ad she's originally from a neighboring State College Houston she had. She had that but it really was. It was the problem here has been Joe Biden. The front the front runner for most of last year did not have the Resources Hillary Clinton did. And in these states I was able to blitz Super Tuesday's soon as basically the same point the race to happen. He is not is barely able to. That is the real distorting effect here that he might be less competitive financially in these eighteen. Made less money in in January and Elizabeth Warren Jeffs good month either Vice President United States. That's a little bit Bloomberg at so much money. Then he's running. Trolling ADS AGAINST DONALD TRUMP. Saying he failed running casinos here in Nevada. That's how much money he's throwing around. He's lapping the field. I think in terms of money spent their billboards around town mocking and denigrating president trump. And look this is the this is part of his appeal to Democratic voters. Frankly I've heard Democratic voters at rallies of figures like people to judge and even Bernie Sanders say. They liked that. He is so rich and that in the words of some voters. I spoke to mean enough to take on trump. They like that. He's denigrating him. Not the not the kind of pose a outrage that Hillary Clinton had how dare you sir. It's more like the emperor has no clothes. Mike Bloomberg's message. Can you explain Tom Steiner? Because Tom Sorry said has been flooding South Carolina with lots of money. He's been putting a lot of money here out in Nevada. It is helping him that much but he is sort of resonating a little bit in South Carolina but isn't necessarily the thing that buys you. It was a combination of He. Invest very early in in blackout region South Carolina even in Iowa. Last time I covered with him there was in Waterloo. One of the few Parks via with big black population. His event was was focused on black issues. He had hugh literature reparations literature. He did that in South Carolina. He did importantly in a in a state that we're not taking very seriously because they looked at the calendar they said Joe Biden's got a lead. They took a nap winter. Whatever else yeah I get to come back at the end so at the end it feels like Bloomberg is going to make him. He's not playing in the first four states so it matters like three days after South Carolina. What he's able to do there is there is there is doing more than spending in the. Super Tuesday states. The organized there it's an advantage and disadvantage right. He's not on the ballot in Nevada and South Carolina. So if he if he took a pummelling in that debate which we know he did at hurt him here he can say. I'm not even competing here. So the big question for my Bloomberg. Is that Kenny? Poor tens hundreds of millions of dollars maybe billions of dollars by Super Tuesday. Yeah try to overcompensate for that poor performance and that kind of the beating took on that debate stage yeah I don't I mean he is building an extraordinary organization. He's picking up staffers. All over the place There being compensated pretty generously according to reports so he is formidable enough if he's from middle of that and.

"Is a distinct difference for sure. Congressman Danny Heck. Thank you very much. Thank you very much for joining me. Now he's earns then John. Thank you for joining me now for more on. The latest attack on our elections is Vera. Bergen Groin Washington correspondent. Time magazine as well as Glenn Kirschner former federal prosecutor. Who's now at MSNBC legal analyst and it's bearing Bryant. I'm GonNa Start with the pronounce your name correctly. What do we know about the extent of the attack from Russia? That's taking place right now. And how much of it is level is aimed at boosting the sanders campaign? And how much is level that boosting the trump campaign? Well I suppose we don't really quite know that yet. We just know that they're really you know that. They are actually interfering on behalf of candidates that they prefer and you know I would be very careful with what is out there and it kind of assuming greeting a lot into their motives and assuming that we know not only who. They're trying to boost but the reason why they're boosting them us. We learned in the two thousand sixteen election as well. It does occur to me Glen that you know the way that Russia has sort of played. This in the past and France actually did a great job of repelling. It is that they tried to go in and help the far right candidate but also trying to boost the far left candidate but the goal was to keep the far left scattered right to keep the left fighting so that they could get the candidate they wanted. What are you see out there as the nature of the threat? If it's a two pronged strategy from Russia you know joy it seems like the real concern here is if we go back to the Mullahs report volume one. Everybody just seems to accept his Gospel. That well you know I guess Bob Muller found obstruction collusion. But it's important to note that even during the Muller Investigation what Bob Muller and his team were able to uncover at one hundred forty instances of contacts coordination between the trump campaign and Russia. And frankly the only reason he was unable to make a conspiracy at least in part was because of the obstructive efforts undertaken by trump and company to keep a lid on that incriminating information. So you know this is more of the same and we now of course have potentially have an acting director of National Intelligence Rick Grenell who reportedly has no intelligence experience whatsoever in job that actually requires extensive intelligence experience and joy. This is just the I'd like to say it's more of the same but the same has been so dangerous because apparently Mitch. Mcconnell is determined not to let any of the House election security bills. Actually come to a vote so what we have is. Russia running roughshod over are free and fair elections and Donald Trump. Doing nothing to stop it. So it's the president continuing to dismantle our government brick by brick really. It seems like for the sheer joy of destroying the government. Because it's not like there is any ideology behind it. It's just really seems to be for pure destruction sake and is there any reporting of movement on any of these bills. I mean the Senate could easily put a an election security bill on the floor. It's hard to understand. Why Mitch McConnell the Senate Majority Leader would not do that if he had any interest whatsoever in stopping a foreign adversary from invading our elections even if that help would help his party basically say. There's no did these bills. They are debate them and say that they wouldn't actually necessarily improve. You wouldn't really make the elections any safer and and you know really what I think is important to remember as well is that ultimately what they what. Russia has been clear that it wants to undermine faith in the election in the elections and democracy among Americans as a whole. And whichever way they can get to that whether it's attacking candidates or we now after the two thousand sixteen election after having spoken about this for four years. You know. Clearly that has taken a tour of Americans believing what they read. Always thinking that somebody else's behind you know things that the hearing about certain candidates and so you know there doesn't seem to be much movement in a lot of these elections security bells and it does. I think that is something that would really really help with the sense that you know that these elections can't be trusted. And that's we. We know that that is the number one thing that Putin and that the Russians have really saw to just. It doesn't matter how the chaos is just to kind of instill this This questioning of the democracy itself and Glendale you know how much more I mean. The sort of worst case scenario is that you have a president who's willing to openly seek foreign help who tried to strong arm foreign help from Ukraine. Who got away with all of that because this political party is locked down by side and then even if laws were broken in attempting to get four and help you haven't attorney general. Who will do anything about it? Because he's locked down any investigations of foreign interference in his own office. Is there any other entity out there? That can protect American elections. It Mitch McConnell won't do it and William Bar won't do it and trump won't do it. Sadly I think the answer might be no joy because traditionally when the executive branch was involved in crime abuses and corruption the Department of Justice and Often the FBI would take the lead would be investigating executive branch crimes but because bill bar really does believe that the president is above the law. You think back to the old Richard. Nixon David Frost interview where Richard Nixon said if the president does it it is not illegal that seems to be the approach that not only Donald Trump is taking but the bill bar is supporting. So I have to agree with congressman. Heck when he said pretty poetically that the cold blooded clear eyed remedy to this seems to be November and the elections but as you say joy that's only if our elections are free and fair. Yeah that's a big. If at this point Vera Bergen Berggruen. I think I've got.

"Of crazy ten. We hear former CIA chief. John. Brennan tweeted quote. We are now in a full blown. National Security crisis were trying to prevent the flow of intelligence to Congress. Trump is a betting a Russian covert operation to keep him in office for Moscow's interests not America's not only our house and Senate Republicans doing nothing to beef up our election security even as their own elections now seem to be in the sights of Russian interference. They are essentially stripping away our defenses just last week. Russia Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn blocked three election security bills the same week the intelligence officials briefed Congress about the Russian threat but this could not come surprise because Senate Majority Leader Mitch. Mcconnell and his team have been protecting trump from day. One as the Atlantic's Adam Serwer writes quote. The Republican Party is slowly transforming into a regime party one whose primary duty is to maintain control of the government at all costs the benefits here our mutual by keeping trump tower. The party remains in power. Joining me now is one of the members of Congress who was in that election security briefing last week Democratic Congressman Danny Heck of Washington and Congressman. Thank you so much for being here. I want to get right to that meeting. Thank you sir. I want to get right to that meeting what I'm interested in knowing about your Republican colleagues and I know that there's limits on what you can say about what you all were told but what seemed to be. Their response was their response in your view. One of saying this is threat. We take it seriously or one of saying we don't WanNa hear this. This could hurt Republicans. Don't tell us thanks for the obviously as you indicated. I can neither confirm nor deny anything that went on in that meeting. And I'm not one to characterize the utterances of my colleagues within classified setting however the past three years have been instructive enough. Have they not after all? We're really in a same song saver circumstance here. The Muller report clearly documented that the Russians interfered in our elections in furtherance of Donald Trump than candidates election and I have said repeatedly over the last three years when asked do I think the Russians will be back. My response is back. I don't believe they ever laugh. And so that is what it is. Furthermore is outrageous as this is violative of our national security. The fact of the matter is the plain fact of the matter. Cold blooded clear eyed fact of the matter is the remedy is November November. If it's a.

"Cross want to bring forward some witnesses that did not testify during the hell's process and that would include the acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney the former national security adviser here John Bolton and some of their top aides they did not testify in the house because of course the White House was blocking them from doing so this is essentially the Democrats trying to say to Republicans let's go she let's try and talk about how this process can play out but it's Republicans who will control the process in the Senate must like we saw the Democrats do in the house yes the gas is not happy about that she should sure instead of talking to me he spoke publicly about what our trial may look like and said he was taking his cues from the White House it was very partisan very slanted very unfair very unfair it's not fair not fair there so McConnell once Golden be better was Michael but whatever we'll go with this guy and I don't think hold really wants to do it like here's the thing he won't say no if you force him he'll gladly come but he's not going to be the first to make a move right and I don't know if he's gonna spill anything that would be really detrimental or not right they had a contentious relationship at times but other times of the day minded each other so you don't know right with bold bold maybe maybe he is I am very funny yes fully crap so they want him they want Michael Duffy so C. director for national security office of management and budget and Robert Blair see your visor to Mick Mulvaney Mick Mulvaney himself now will that happen probably not because why well because the control is in whose hands this time it's now in make your baby's hats and Mitch maybe say you know what what I have already told you will get we're gonna do this right where are you guys you were going to do this we're gonna do we've heard enough we know what we're all voting we're gonna roll with this way we're gonna go over the evidence is already represented in both committees in the house and then we're gonna vote maybe we'll call one or two but outside of that we're not gonna do anything spectacular we're not going to turn this into a month long trial this is what it is she guys his have to deal with it that's how I know but that's what he says he wants to do for trial I think trump would be fine with that stupid you guys want to bring all these people great if they're going to come go ahead by the way we're gonna bring in fighting we're gonna bring in a son we're gonna bring a potentially people from very small right we're gonna bring in Adam Schiff we're gonna bring in several other people so are you prepared for that and all this because they want to see if they can sway public opinion and they're not going to sway it doesn't matter the public's opinion this made up and very little of it has to do with truth on either side most of it has to do with the stain on the other side for the people they're coming for trump over the people that are protecting trop that's the reality three two three five three twenty four twenty three ads have been to show your Twitter feel free to tweet at me and and no matter how much I I try to tell people this one of the big things that this is about long term is that court Scotus right they could be hearing a bunch of stuff next year some of the pertains directly with the president they did rule on something today almost people who sleep on sidewalks or other public spaces cannot be prosecuted for a crime that is with the nation's top justices decided by leaving in place a lower court ruling the case stemmed from a Boise Idaho ordinance that made it a crime if someone was homeless and they slept on the street when no alternative shelter is available an appeals court ruled that the ordinance which find in jail the homeless violated the constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment the justices without comment or dissent decided to not hear the case leaving in place that ruling it impacts several western states struggling with homelessness a result of increasing housing costs in income inequality which is not even a quarter of the story but I think we know that right like there are people out there that are living in areas that they should be living in because they can no longer afford it and they're stuck between a rock and a hard place let's not pretend that that's not real other people out there that are trying and they're playing catch up and in the struggle but the majority of what we're talking about those people sleeping on the sidewalks and a lot of what's happening it it's the in places like Portland in places like San Francisco Los Angeles Seattle we're dealing with drugs and mental illness and does city still left the answer the question of what the hell you guys gonna do Los Angeles on a billion dollars at it and you've created what more homeless people right you think you you've also told everybody that comes here don't worry no matter what you do you wanna crap on the sidewalk go ahead right you want to shoot up in front of people knock yourself out you want to steal from cars it's okay as long as under a grand nobody cares we're not going to prosecute you we've allowed this to go on and by saying too many of these cities Hey go ahead you know we're gonna show you how compassion we are all you're doing is making it worse that's not compassion right that's a compassionate all you're not helping them at all you making it worse and you may get worse for the taxpayers and the people they have to fight with I grew up in in in Long Beach in the LA area it is what it is now is just awful in certain areas this park I used to go play soccer out right across from beach I wouldn't go there at all anymore it is so nasty and it's not a single father down and out honest look it's not it is not that it's not a it's not a mom who's escaping something you know it's it's it's not that it's not a family that's that's just in over their head they've had some bad luck and then you offer many of these people they're out there the opportunity to have certain spaces Hey you can move in here you can do this but there's rules and you know what they don't want they don't want rules attached to them are there people that are out there they're struggling yes we all know that they want a hand up in an opportunity but there are too many people out there in these areas they're addicted to drugs and they have mental illness sometime it's because of the drugs have mental illness and sometimes it is the fact that they've had metals for a long time and they're no longer treating it and now it is so far out of whack sad but true three two three five three twenty four twenty three at Javits shows your Twitter feel free to tweet that made this needs to be looked at I'm not gonna lie idea it was disturbing to say the least and you ask yourself what in god's name were you thinking west point says during the army navy football game some cadets in some mid.

And a great way to test out new speakers, what kind of speakers, do you remem? Wow. Alpine. I l alpine or Blaupunkt there's only two alpine three ways. I they're not sponsors folks, were they I actually because the car small actually put the tweeter is in the air conditioning units. Because again, I wasn't using the air conditioning bents because we had no air-conditioning doesn't put a Twitter in air conditioning. I ask you, ladies and gentlemen, who doesn't do that. They're still there. I still have the car the see that that that that buzz came from the non audio file part of my staff that. Values air conditioning more than music. The tweets facing you. That's exactly is non directional treble is directional who have to have facing. Listen to the man. Okay. Listen to the man still have the car ninety nine thousand was my next question with twenty seconds left. Tell us the story about the miata still haven't nine thousand months. Why are you once a great automobile? Where is it? It's only driven by little oh, man. On Sundays go to church in South Carolina, South Carolina. How many miles ninety nine thousand what are you going to do in? It's one hundred thousand I'm gonna put that album Beck in and listened to it one more time. I knew the answer the question lays gentleman, that's the host perogative. I major Garrett we've been at Martin's tavern and Georgetown, having a fantastic time. "I major Garrett. Welcome to Martin's tavern never been here before Georgetown, haunt of legendary status. We are back in the dugout of Martin's tavern. Why do we call the Doug well because lots of important things happened here over the years Lyndon Baines Johnson when he was young congressman studied at the feet of Sam Rayburn, then the house speaker those who were involved in drafting the legislation that would lead to the new deal also met back here, an m Stanton Evans, a leader of renowned in the conservative movement from the nineteen fifties also gathered here with fellow like minded conservatives to plot. The end of the new deal all it happened here at Mearns tavern not only that JFK proposed to Jacqueline Bouvier in a booth nearby here. Richard Nixon had a booth here. Lots of famous people and boy, do we have a famous guest this week and their beers. Really good. That's the voice of Mick Mulvaney, acting chief of staff to the president of the United States mic. Great to see. It is good to be here is going to see you good to see you. So what is the difference? In the Trump White House from chief of staff and acting chief of staff, none as I tell people short of Mike Pence everybody else in the administration is just acting because the president can remove you at any time for any reason. So it doesn't really make a difference. Now for some folks. I mean face it. He had some cabinet, folks. He didn't like and there's been some White House personnel turnover as well. Yeah. Now, not much not not since I've been there. In fact, I've actually had a couple people come to me right after I took over in December and said they were leaving. And they've since come back and said they'd like to stay. So things of I think going really really, well, I five months if I say, I love this job. Why I'm I we deal with everything at being yesterday was two days ago is Tiger Woods and around. Sanctions. I mean, come on. I mean, it's just for somebody like me with the broad set of interests in a really short attention span. This is a great job did John Kelly like this job. I don't think he did John is John is a great American and just one of the finest your predecessor chief of staff. One of the finest men I've ever known it not only four star general, but in my mind, even more so a gold star father, he's given more to this country than I think any anybody else could ever imagine..

"Because I came up the other day in the in the private meeting with with with the big eight as they call the leaders in the house, and the Senate Republicans Democrats was that he was willing to agree. And he mentioned this at the rose garden press conference to take a concrete wall off the table that that that is that if that is not evidence of our willingness to to to to solve the problem. Okay. Because again, what's driving? This is the president's desire to change the conditions at the border, and if he has to give up a concrete wall replace it with a steel fence in order to do that. So that Democrats can say see he's not building a wall anymore that should help us. The president no longer wants a wall that he wants a fence the president is going to secure the border with a barrier. We say it that way. Comfortable saying, no, not gonna have the wall. And by the way, Mexico's never painting. I think he said yesterday it was going to be a thirty foot high still he actually tweeted a picture out of it two weeks ago, we told the Democrats this week. So this is what we want to build. Do you think this is a wall actually under the way the law is written right now, technically, it's not a wall? But if that's not evidence of the president's desire to try and resolve I don't know what is moving. I think we ran over time. The current chief of staff you have given up your title. Let us know when you do it has always a pleasure. And joining me now is the house majority leader democratic congressman Steny Hoyer of Maryland, congressman or meet the press earth healing to be with you. All right. Let me start with that last. Mick Mulvaney, said just now you heard him the president is taking concrete wall off the table. If that's not if that's not evidence that he was trying to compromise. Then he'd know. What is do you take that as a as a good faith offer? It is an offer he made an it'll be discussed. But the fact of the matter is you used Mick Mulvaney is quote, but you've got Senator John Cornyn who says I don't think we're just going to be able to solve border security with a physical Barry because people can come under around it and threw it Lindsey Graham said the porta wall is probably not a smart investment. Mike McCall, the chairman of the homeland security committee in the last Angra said you have to understand too that a thirty foot concrete wall is a very expensive proposition. And there are a lot of other things we can do be doing technology wise to make it a smart border. That's more effective and more cost efficient. So this is not a democratic position. This is a pretty broad position that this does not make sense what we ought to do is open up the government. I and that's what we're gonna do. We pass legislation last Thursday that. Would open up the government. I would hope that Senator McConnell would take the responsibility as the leader of the Coequal branch of government the legislative branch and send this to the present. That would open up government which start serving the American people. Do you regret not taking the deal that vice president Pence offer the ask for two point five billion? And maybe you could have said here's more money for border security, you guys call it border security, and all this, and you would have reopened the government will look we were ready to take the deal that the vice-president offered and Senator McConnell took that offer. He passed a Bill or I'm talking about. He didn't earn steno. Senator McConnell did pass that Bill in the last congress. He sent us a Bill and the Republicans in the house of resumes rejected the Senate bills the Republican bills. And when you say have we compromise we have voted for and are prepared to vote for Republican bills. These are all the Republican bills from the last congress. And as a matter of fact, Chuck as you know, we're going to make every effort to open up government next week. We're gonna offer. Bills to open.

"And a long time at least not this level so we had jurisdiction over some of the claims the occ had some over others and just we just decided to do together yeah but the premise of the question sir is that the pb under under mick mulvaney has in your own words not been extremely active oh i'm sorry i'm sorry i thought you meant the legal structure no that's that's that's that's actually not true all i said that is that i wasn't going to push the envelope we weren't going to try and be overly creative and go after folks who might not be breaking the law i think anybody who would look at the facts including those that were admitted by wells catania that they broke the law so no i've said for the very beginning we were going to enforce the law that's exactly what we've done today about how you're running the place you said to the house financial services committee the other day you said listen i haven't burned the place down we're just doing a new way of regulating what does that mean what does that look like well there's a lot of discretion in regulations regulations are a lot of times very very great mind congress's pretty sloppy i say that having formerly been in in congress sort of paint the big picture with a big brush but don't get down into the details and they leave that to the to the administration to the executive branch and there's a lot of discretion down at that level and i'm going to exercise mind differently than my predecessor would have that means i think i dismissed one lawsuit out of twenty six that we might not bring as many lawsuits as he did but that doesn't mean we're not enforcing the law i'm a bureaucrat now and that means that my job is to enforce the law and i'm gonna do statute tells me to do but i'm not gonna go beyond that and that's the biggest difference between the previous leadership of the bureau but you've delayed enforcement of some rules you've dropped lawsuits against payday lenders you've you've stripped out some protections of fair lending provisions i guess the question re large is actually i if i.
