"Good morning america. this is the case. Roundtable trump castle keys sunday morning. What's going on in our country. Well i got one smart guy with us today. His name is mick mulvaney. He was the former chief of staff to president trump before that he ran the office of management and budget. He was a congressman. He was a special envoy void to ireland. What else can you ask for a good morning. Mick mulvaney how are you today or josh. How are you sir. There's so many things happening in our country. I don't know where do you wanna start or it's a busy week for sure. Well let's talk about supply chains. i We're in do you right. We are and it's not get any better. And here's here's why john I administration made some big news about two weeks ago with this announcement about extending the hours at the port of long beach and that was great. That's wonderful but that's about one out of a thousand things that they need to be doing Just fixing the port. Ours is not going to solve the problem. Because you've got so many other places where the federal government is involved with the supply chain The end of things that can go wrong at are going on right now so I was excited to see by. That's most at. But i've not heard anything in the last two weeks the federal doing other places. And that's very that's very disturbing. I understand this is not a problem on the east coast. I understand governor. To safeties in. Florida is yelling and screaming is bring those ships on this side and will unload them and the problem seems to be on the west coast california washington state and oregon. And they're trying to hold up the entire country. What says that you yeah. There's actually some wonderful stories. You could find them at a local trashy. They don't get a lot of nashville coverage about how they're One of the difficulties in long beach is that they haven't do automated terminal. That is upset that you leaders because it doesn't hire as many people was an effective work slowdown which also what read about is the fact that despite the fact that the bite administration is amounts of two weeks ago but extending the hours. The hours actually haven't been extended yet the agreement in place. The hours have changed noticeably yet. So again there's all sorts of things could go wrong. Governor centers is a great governor. I know very well. Serve in congress together. He can help a little bit but face it. Those goods are waiting off of long beach or trying to get the salt lake. City going through jacksonville. Miami is not gonna be knocking to be a solution. There's so many things that can go wrong at a supply chain That That it's know vehicle. We we have what we have. And it's nice to have governor step up like the santa's i know. My governor in south carolina is helping out his trying to help as well. But you really got to have settled on lead on this. There's only so much the state governments can do. I understand price of toys to lovely four hundred because it'd be interruption of the cycle because the price of oil has gone from forty dollars to the middle eighties low eighties. There's a problem in our country. Inflation in food. Inflation and clothing inflation in gasoline has occurred. Where do we go from here. You know they're trying to say that. This is a temporary problem but mick mulvaney..

Mick Mulvaney Says The President Has Changed

"Former white house. Chief of staff mick. Mulvaney believes something is different about the president. I wrote a piece in the wall street journal. Six weeks ago saying that. I thought the president would leave in a presidential manner. I really did believe that at the time the stories i told to back that up. We're true. I've seen the president be presidential before and i know that he has the ability to do it. He did it every single day. I don't know what's different if it's different about him. Now if it's different about his advisors mulvaney on fox news sunday

"With another video statement last night, a good video statement and naturally is being attacked for the video seven, which is a good and sound and thoughtful in the right words were used inside. Um, I would say, as opposed to the statement from day before yesterday, which was lackluster. We'll just call it lackluster day before yesterday but yesterday came out with a statement would probably would have been better if it had been issued day before yesterday in place of the one that was issued day before yesterday. But but never mind that because he's still being attacked at Bare minimum. Even his friends they're saying too little too late. And by the way, there have been a significant number now of resignations from the from the Trump Administration, not the White House proper necessarily, but from the administration. And we've got Mick Mulvaney, who was, you know close actually counted on special envoy Northern Ireland. At this point, he resigned. Stephanie Grisham, chief of staff to the first lady resigned, met Pottenger, the deputy national security advisor. Some of these, it already resigned while we're on the air yesterday, Um Sara Matthews, Deputy Press secretary resigned. Uh, Ricky Nikita, is it Nikita? I'm gonna go with that has resigned. Might be Nikita. White House Social secretary resigned John Costello, and this is apparently all over the president's conduct of the events on Wednesday. But I'd like to hear from them each individually. The timing certainly would suggest that that is the there's a cause and effect going on here. John Costello, the Commerce Department, the deputy assistant secretary for intelligence and security, he submitted his resignation. Ryan Kelly, who NSC senior director. For European and Russian affairs. He resigned. Betsy DeVos, the edge education secretary, has resigned. She's an interesting woman and her brother is Erik Prince, and I'm right about that. I think that's right. Erik Prince of Blackwater and Z Systems and all that stuff, Great American Patriot and Elaine Chao Elaine Chao, the secretary of the Department of Transportation, has resigned. Also. And I haven't seen a lot of like letters. I'm resigning in protest because of this, But it's being taken that way in. The timing would suggest that that is, in fact, the cost Elaine showers, of course. Also anybody The wife of Senator Mitch McConnell, who is for the moment, at least the majority leader in the United States Senate. And, of course you know the story. You know that this ridiculous story about the Democrats. Dave labeled Mitch McConnell cocaine. Mitch, You're familiar with this right? Cocaine, Mitch and you know, But you know why the cocaine Mitch label, you know, you remember this story, Michael. Michael remembers the story because he's got a memory. Unlike anybody in the news media, you should run a major news organization. Actually, Michael, you should be CEO of shakes his head. I don't think so. See, Elaine Chao is she comes from a very wealthy family. Her father is a very successful businessman. Chinese And, um, any owns, among other things he owns controls many businesses entities. One of them is a global shipping conglomerate. Elaine Chao's father. And as the man who runs this global shipping conglomerate. As you might imagine the ships go around the globe and 11 of the ships. One of the ships was found leaving. Where was it? A port in in South America was on the northern border of South American. I can't remember which port it was, but a lot of cocaine comes out of there. And one ship that inspectors law enforcement went aboard the ship to inspect the ship. And they found that aboard the ship. There was a a container with cocaine that was being smuggled out of the country, and they intercepted that shipment of cocaine and then you know I don't think they arrested anybody. But they took the cocaine. They seize the cocaine. So the left I saw this summer, the Democrats and the media, but I repeat myself. They saw that. That's okay. So wait a minute. What's the connection here? Um, Mr Chow. Welcome, Mr Chow. Because I don't I don't know is his actual name. He He owns a company and they have a lot of ships. And on one of the ships coming out of South America's Somebody tried to smuggle cocaine and his daughter is married to Mitch McConnell. So Mitch McConnell is cocaine. Mitch, right? That's the connection that we have her and that's the kind of stuff that they do on MSNBC. And I'm sure it's been said on CNN and they all laugh up there corrupt, ignorant little sleeves and and pretend that they're doing journalism or something like that. It's pretty amazing, but that's the thing that's the thing with them. Christ. Everyone knows that. In reality. He's just the turtle. Everybody knows that. And I believe it that there is all right. So let's go to Chuck. Because the lane shot she she resigned in all that stuff. Um Now the president and again for people that are joining him. We have no phones We have. It's no lines Friday, no lines Friday because we had no lines to call into because her entire phone system is broke. She is a bit out. She's a broke Now the president, United States and the president's speech last night was What was that about a minute and a half long about a minute and a half? Was it Was it longer than that? Wasn't that one was about two minutes. Okay was about two minutes long and and I can't actually play it all for you comfortably right now, with the clock being what it is, but I could if we went to break early, So why don't we do that and I'm gonna play for you what.

"Cross want to bring forward some witnesses that did not testify during the hell's process and that would include the acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney the former national security adviser here John Bolton and some of their top aides they did not testify in the house because of course the White House was blocking them from doing so this is essentially the Democrats trying to say to Republicans let's go she let's try and talk about how this process can play out but it's Republicans who will control the process in the Senate must like we saw the Democrats do in the house yes the gas is not happy about that she should sure instead of talking to me he spoke publicly about what our trial may look like and said he was taking his cues from the White House it was very partisan very slanted very unfair very unfair it's not fair not fair there so McConnell once Golden be better was Michael but whatever we'll go with this guy and I don't think hold really wants to do it like here's the thing he won't say no if you force him he'll gladly come but he's not going to be the first to make a move right and I don't know if he's gonna spill anything that would be really detrimental or not right they had a contentious relationship at times but other times of the day minded each other so you don't know right with bold bold maybe maybe he is I am very funny yes fully crap so they want him they want Michael Duffy so C. director for national security office of management and budget and Robert Blair see your visor to Mick Mulvaney Mick Mulvaney himself now will that happen probably not because why well because the control is in whose hands this time it's now in make your baby's hats and Mitch maybe say you know what what I have already told you will get we're gonna do this right where are you guys you were going to do this we're gonna do we've heard enough we know what we're all voting we're gonna roll with this way we're gonna go over the evidence is already represented in both committees in the house and then we're gonna vote maybe we'll call one or two but outside of that we're not gonna do anything spectacular we're not going to turn this into a month long trial this is what it is she guys his have to deal with it that's how I know but that's what he says he wants to do for trial I think trump would be fine with that stupid you guys want to bring all these people great if they're going to come go ahead by the way we're gonna bring in fighting we're gonna bring in a son we're gonna bring a potentially people from very small right we're gonna bring in Adam Schiff we're gonna bring in several other people so are you prepared for that and all this because they want to see if they can sway public opinion and they're not going to sway it doesn't matter the public's opinion this made up and very little of it has to do with truth on either side most of it has to do with the stain on the other side for the people they're coming for trump over the people that are protecting trop that's the reality three two three five three twenty four twenty three ads have been to show your Twitter feel free to tweet at me and and no matter how much I I try to tell people this one of the big things that this is about long term is that court Scotus right they could be hearing a bunch of stuff next year some of the pertains directly with the president they did rule on something today almost people who sleep on sidewalks or other public spaces cannot be prosecuted for a crime that is with the nation's top justices decided by leaving in place a lower court ruling the case stemmed from a Boise Idaho ordinance that made it a crime if someone was homeless and they slept on the street when no alternative shelter is available an appeals court ruled that the ordinance which find in jail the homeless violated the constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment the justices without comment or dissent decided to not hear the case leaving in place that ruling it impacts several western states struggling with homelessness a result of increasing housing costs in income inequality which is not even a quarter of the story but I think we know that right like there are people out there that are living in areas that they should be living in because they can no longer afford it and they're stuck between a rock and a hard place let's not pretend that that's not real other people out there that are trying and they're playing catch up and in the struggle but the majority of what we're talking about those people sleeping on the sidewalks and a lot of what's happening it it's the in places like Portland in places like San Francisco Los Angeles Seattle we're dealing with drugs and mental illness and does city still left the answer the question of what the hell you guys gonna do Los Angeles on a billion dollars at it and you've created what more homeless people right you think you you've also told everybody that comes here don't worry no matter what you do you wanna crap on the sidewalk go ahead right you want to shoot up in front of people knock yourself out you want to steal from cars it's okay as long as under a grand nobody cares we're not going to prosecute you we've allowed this to go on and by saying too many of these cities Hey go ahead you know we're gonna show you how compassion we are all you're doing is making it worse that's not compassion right that's a compassionate all you're not helping them at all you making it worse and you may get worse for the taxpayers and the people they have to fight with I grew up in in in Long Beach in the LA area it is what it is now is just awful in certain areas this park I used to go play soccer out right across from beach I wouldn't go there at all anymore it is so nasty and it's not a single father down and out honest look it's not it is not that it's not a it's not a mom who's escaping something you know it's it's it's not that it's not a family that's that's just in over their head they've had some bad luck and then you offer many of these people they're out there the opportunity to have certain spaces Hey you can move in here you can do this but there's rules and you know what they don't want they don't want rules attached to them are there people that are out there they're struggling yes we all know that they want a hand up in an opportunity but there are too many people out there in these areas they're addicted to drugs and they have mental illness sometime it's because of the drugs have mental illness and sometimes it is the fact that they've had metals for a long time and they're no longer treating it and now it is so far out of whack sad but true three two three five three twenty four twenty three at Javits shows your Twitter feel free to "It's become part of the fabric of the average American family. Republican congressman Peter King of Long Island, New York telling ABC keep ObamaCare in place, but make improvements at adjustment. Some members of the GOP wonder why President Trump will take on the Affordable Care Act at all at this time with more. I'm joined on the KOMO news. I by ABC's Mona cars are Abdi on Capitol Hill and the decision by the president wanted to revive the fight over so-called. Obamacare has some of his own party riled up. What's the latest does? Have you heard from Peter King bear, we've heard from a number of Republicans have said they would like the president to hold off on repealing until there is a solid replacement in place. They were blindsided by the president's move. You know, he says he wants the Republicans to be the party of healthcare. But at the right now, we don't have a good idea or a good indication of what the replacement would be the White House has said that healthcare plan is on the way in coming months. Big debate. About replacing ObamaCare is about protections for people with preexisting conditions. That's about fifty four million Americans now have protections under the Affordable Care Act and one thing that Mick Mulvaney. The president's acting chief of staff did say is that the new healthcare plan will include protections for people with preexisting conditions. These House Republicans are continuing to be asked about this back home. There's obvious concern about their standing with voters, and they need to come up with some answers here to Ray again and go back to a lot of them were blindsided by this. I was coming off the report, I think the president was going to ride his victories as he saw it for a few more weeks, but he did pivot to healthcare. Would you Democrats saw a win? They now control the house. There have been multiple attempts to overturn the Affordable Care Act through congress that have failed when Republicans control the house, but now even harder because now Democrats control the house, and even though the president now going through the courts. This will be a lengthy process. And by the time if it is repealed and replacement is about to the implemented. It will be well into the twenty twenty election. Mona house. Democrats are preparing subpoenas this week over the Muller reform unredacted report, what's the latest there. They have scheduled a vote to authorized Jerry Nadler to issue. These subpoenas subpoenas would be for attorney general William bar who right now has the full round three hundred page report. He has said actually last week. Democrats gave him a deadline of April second which is tomorrow to turn over the full unredacted report. He already indicated that he would be missing that deadline but said in mid April he would likely turnover. The report with reductions, but Democrats are not waiting the house. Democrats have this vote scheduled for the day after that deadline that it looks like he will miss and from their day are also subpoenaing five top former and current White House advisers. All right, Mona thanks so much Monaco's are Abdeal with that report from Capitol Hill from ABC news. Komo news five eleven nineteen now and has we check more on the legal troubles are Michael avenue. "Of staff. Mick Mulvaney, says Americans will not lose coverage. If the Affordable Care Act is struck down. Let's talk about pre existing conditions because it gets a lot of the attention and rightly so every single plan that this White House has ever put forward since Donald Trump was elected covered preexisting conditions. Every single plan that Republicans the house voted on in the previous congress covered preexisting conditions. Every single plan considered by the Senate covers pre existing conditions. The debate about pre existing conditions is over president. Donald Trump has been adamant about one point this week, quote, the Republican party will soon be known as the party of healthcare. How exactly that will come to be and whether it will be a blessing or a curse for Republicans in twenty twenty is still unclear. Authorities say a South Carolina college student kidnapped and killed after mistakenly getting into what she thought was a rideshare car had wounds all over her body arrest warrants released Sunday morning, say twenty one year old Samantha Josephson had numerous wounds to her head neck face, upper body, leg and foot. "Or five point seven he's going to do whatever he can to secure that border. Yeah. Mick Mulvaney, talking about the border and tonight this me rally in El Paso, and there's going to be competing rally. He believes there's a crisis. Several people over the weekend. I don't believe there's a crisis. I believe there's a manufactured situation that has gotten. Worse because of failures by both parties to act on it. But for America is there this horrific crisis where we're gonna fall apart. No. And all of these things could be sorted out. Again, e-verify across the country start hammering businesses to get caught start finding them. And then shutting down overnight magically you'll find that the wall is fixed. It's fixed. Wall of laws. That sorted out. Problem solved. But you, and I both know that's not going to happen you, and I both know that. So what do we have? We have a situation where come Friday we could be in a similar situation where we could find ourselves heading into another shutdown and potentially. A state of emergency declared and then lawsuit after lawsuit. After lawsuit after lawsuit which even if Trump, let's let's as I was trying to explain some of these bringing even if Trump gets what he wants moneywise. Right. So meaning the Democrats, which it's not going have. But the Democrats say, hey, here is x y and z for you to build your wall. They're still going to be lawsuits filed because certain places along the border. Nope. You know, then you're going to get into eminent domain this. There's going to be shoes. Along the way. So understand that this is not a situation that is going to be just solved immediate. She's not going to happen. Like that. That's why I said it's gonna take years and years to find out how well if we put barriers along with everything else all of this stuff works. It'll be years before that data comes out doesn't mean we don't try to do something. But I think without actually saying we need to enforce the visa laws and be more diligent in finding out who's overstaying their visas because as of now if you go look at the recent numbers over the last several years to the three people that are here illegally right are people who overstayed their visas. They're here and they're overstaying their visas. And and again, those numbers can be skewed because we know who's overstaying visas compared to who's coming across. And when it comes to we all know when it comes to things like. Drugs. They're coming through the ports through the mail things of that nature because you wanna get you wanna move weight. Right. That's what you want to move you. Walk to move. Wait. Large amounts. So they're bringing large amounts through that direction. Right. Maybe even the ocean and several other ways three two three five three eight twenty four twenty three at Chadbensonshow is your Twitter. You can tweet at us. Love hearing from you. It has been a nightmare in Virginia to say, the least I let's start with the Lieutenant governor Lieutenant governor Fairfax who is you know, they were supposed to start articles impeachment that maybe they were maybe they aren't as morning at least one lawmaker says he's pursuing impeachment for Lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax after two women accused Fairfax of sexual assault Vanessa Tyson claims Fairfax forced her to perform oral sex back in two thousand four and Meredith Watson says Fairfax raped her in two thousand while both were students at Duke Fairfax claims that both encounters work in central and is now calling for an FBI investigation. Yeah. He wants an FBI investigation. And they've already said they're going to delay the impeachment hearings because you can't impeach somebody's not technically done anything wrong. Even though there's women who are accusing him told people afterwards there. There's some some serious. Unlike the whole thing when you look at Cavanaugh. Where it was he was guilty based in the court of public opinion on somebody's like, well, I think some happened to me I think this is the time and not quite sure these women are pointing out every step of the way of what's place. Still have been convicted. So there's that. And remember he thought he was going to be governor. He did. Because of yes, the man the myth the legend Ralph Northam who by this is sat down with with with Gayle king and is just. He's a boob. The best way to describe. It is a guy who's completely out of touch in so many ways just just just kind of a dirt is a great just a great way to describe this guy. I'm not going anywhere. I have learned.

The the White House has asked various government agencies to make a list of programs that would be severely impacted by the shutdown. If it continues into March and April. According to the Washington Post acting White House chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, wants that information by Friday. That's the day the shutdown will reach five weeks in length. Whereas they go into the background the president and house speaker Nancy Pelosi are deadlocked. Pelosi by the way, not allowing Trump to deliver the state of the union address next week. Which prompted the president yesterday to say, he's working on an alternative plan. This extends into March April there, there's undoubtedly a whole lot of people. There's already a number of in the likes of the TSA workers and whatnot. That are calling in sick not showing up for work talking about financial hardships. This could really begin to get ugly. "The officials saying prudent management means planning and preparing for events without known end dates as oh Embi continues to manage this partial lapse in appropriations unfunded agencies are being asked to continue to share with O M B an ongoing list of programs that could be impacted within the coming weeks. So the White House the office of management and budget here confirming that Washington Post report that Mick Mulvaney, has asked agencies to send them a list of all the programs that could be disrupted if this shutdown continues there that includes things like the federal court system, the payments of benefits under the department of agriculture to people who are on federal assistance. And all the rest of the programs, and the vast federal government bureaucracy that might be impacted here Melissa so programs as opposed to agency functions like the SEC, for instance. Sure. And all of that. I think is what the White House will be concerned about what does this mean? For example, there's been some discussion about the IPO market, and the the White House wants to know, it would seem what all of the unintended consequences of this government shutdown could be how all of that could play out, and it's asking the federal agencies for their guidance on the most high impact programs that that could come into play here. Basically, the White House was trying to figure out how bad it could get and this continues into March or April, which is a very long time from now. Well, Amen, thank you Ayman Babar's in Washington DC, if it continues until March or April, I mean, this is concerning the government shutdown. We haven't even gotten to a legislative agenda yet. It's more concerning that we're thinking of what the ramifications over how much longer we can go with this not what do we do to get the solve both sides of the aisle. I it's absurd that we're now investigating. Ramifications of how we have to deal with this. I've just trying to they're trying to put people's mind at ease too though. I mean for us when you get that paddock set in that it could go along as shutdown in history. And then you get a panic. Oh my God. What's going to happen? I think a lot of this is probably just trying to soothe the public saying, okay? It's not the end of the world. We'll get by on this. We'll try to figure it out. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing for them if they're sort of entitlement programs those programs people want to have some answers there. I'll let's get more on this as well as the markets bringing Jonathan GAO at the chief equity strategist for Credit Suisse Jonathan great to have you with us. Good to be how much bigger of a risk to the markets. If at all or the economy is the shutdown at this point long long term. It's not a big deal and one of the things that we're focused on is not what happens in two specific programs, but the people get their tax refunds people spend that money, and the people file early are they put that back into the economy. You also have workers who are who are not going to go and get a paycheck. So we're really looking at the consumption, I kind of disagree with the point you're making this is to sue. If you listen to the point bay by the White House that if this goes on for the whole quarter that you can have a zero GDP first of all debt is an absurd thing. You know, GDP is expected to be three percent this quarter and to wipe out three percent GDP. It's almost the opposite. It almost seems as if people are trying to turn up the heat and and fight this out. So, you know, it's I'm not sure a bargaining chip. Almost me. There are some concrete ways in which an investor is impacted by this in that is you have less data to go through seat. Leeson did report today on Lynch about the whole list of data that has not been released because of the government shutdown and much of that data is an input into calculating GDP. So when the fed meets on January twenty ninth it will have less data on which to be data dependent. Well, you went to the feds pant plan is nothing there..

"There is no method is just madness. Well, there's the more madness that I want to share with all of you in this fourth week of government shutdown. We're currently in the fourth week of a government shutdown. In fact, government workers have now gone past a pay period without getting paid. However, we're getting some more insight into the negotiations, and what happened behind the scenes, and how Donald Trump actually spoke down to his current chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, now there are no winners here. But I will say that I enjoy hearing about Mick Mulvaney getting. Address down by Donald Trump by anyone because Mick Mulvaney is a terrible human being. But with that said, here's what happened. So Mulvaney, tried to negotiate a compromise sum of money and said that if Democrats weren't okay with five point seven billion dollars for the border wall and the president wasn't okay. For one point three billion dollars. He was trying to say we should find a middle ground. So this is how the negotiation starts this negotiation happened on January fourth and at that point. Trump interrupts him and says, quote, you just eft it all up mic in the middle of the rue glossy brochure in the room. Nice. Okay. Okay. Look if I'm in a business meeting, and what are we doing negotiations? And this is small time stuff. Right. We're not talking about the whole United States government and the showdown at cetera. But we're not talking about billions in house. But if I'm to business meeting and one guy yells at another guy on the team you just after all off mic. I think okay. These guys are clowns. Okay. Total and utter unprofessional clowns. In two. I think they didn't do any homework. They didn't bother talking to each other before the meeting. Did of course, they did it Jake. He doesn't want to sit through national like intelligence meetings. He doesn't want to sit through that kind of stuff. He wants picture books to explain how our government works. He doesn't even know how the government works. I mean, of course, they don't communicate with one another. Of course, they don't know how to negotiate he is not a master negotiator. If he were a master negotiator. If he didn't know how to make good deals if you were a good businessman. He wouldn't go bankrupt six times. So I for that rent. But I mean, it's just it's nonstop chaos within his administration. So if you're an effective manager, you would have a strategy going to talk to the other side. Hey, guys, I want five point seven billion Dave offered one point three what's a strategy. So now, I'm going to say this, and then make you say that and then, you know, maybe by Cheever's well at this point, he's acting. She was staff and other aid might say something else, and we're going to get to a point landing point where we can become. Here's a range of where. Hey, I'd like to get the four point two. But you know, what we'll take it if it's three point five so and maybe even do a good come bad Cup. Whatever it might be right. You have some strategy going into the meeting. Instead, they do no work. No preparation they blunder in. And then Mulvaney for the first time in his life says something reasonable like, I don't know. Can we meet in the middle? You want five point seven. They want one point three how about in the middle, which is actually fairly reasonable thing to say, and then Trump lose it. Well, why didn't you tell talk to him ahead of time and tell them not to say that right? If you didn't think that anybody might say, hey, why don't we meet in the middle that didn't occur to you? It's unbelievable. Right. And he's he's Trump is frustrated with Mick Mulvaney, because Mulvaney, had offered Democrats. The original some which Trump seemed to sign off on originally. But then he got bullied by the Ann Coulter's and the rush Limbaugh's the world on television and on radio, and then he decided to completely change his mind. So instead of taking personal responsibility for his lack of communication for his lack of being an effective negotiator for his inability to stick to what he claims he wants he's decided that he's going to take it all out on everyone else, including Mick Mulvaney, in front of Chuck Schumer.

"Because I came up the other day in the in the private meeting with with with the big eight as they call the leaders in the house, and the Senate Republicans Democrats was that he was willing to agree. And he mentioned this at the rose garden press conference to take a concrete wall off the table that that that is that if that is not evidence of our willingness to to to to solve the problem. Okay. Because again, what's driving? This is the president's desire to change the conditions at the border, and if he has to give up a concrete wall replace it with a steel fence in order to do that. So that Democrats can say see he's not building a wall anymore that should help us. The president no longer wants a wall that he wants a fence the president is going to secure the border with a barrier. We say it that way. Comfortable saying, no, not gonna have the wall. And by the way, Mexico's never painting. I think he said yesterday it was going to be a thirty foot high still he actually tweeted a picture out of it two weeks ago, we told the Democrats this week. So this is what we want to build. Do you think this is a wall actually under the way the law is written right now, technically, it's not a wall? But if that's not evidence of the president's desire to try and resolve I don't know what is moving. I think we ran over time. The current chief of staff you have given up your title. Let us know when you do it has always a pleasure. And joining me now is the house majority leader democratic congressman Steny Hoyer of Maryland, congressman or meet the press earth healing to be with you. All right. Let me start with that last. Mick Mulvaney, said just now you heard him the president is taking concrete wall off the table. If that's not if that's not evidence that he was trying to compromise. Then he'd know. What is do you take that as a as a good faith offer? It is an offer he made an it'll be discussed. But the fact of the matter is you used Mick Mulvaney is quote, but you've got Senator John Cornyn who says I don't think we're just going to be able to solve border security with a physical Barry because people can come under around it and threw it Lindsey Graham said the porta wall is probably not a smart investment. Mike McCall, the chairman of the homeland security committee in the last Angra said you have to understand too that a thirty foot concrete wall is a very expensive proposition. And there are a lot of other things we can do be doing technology wise to make it a smart border. That's more effective and more cost efficient. So this is not a democratic position. This is a pretty broad position that this does not make sense what we ought to do is open up the government. I and that's what we're gonna do. We pass legislation last Thursday that. Would open up the government. I would hope that Senator McConnell would take the responsibility as the leader of the Coequal branch of government the legislative branch and send this to the present. That would open up government which start serving the American people. Do you regret not taking the deal that vice president Pence offer the ask for two point five billion? And maybe you could have said here's more money for border security, you guys call it border security, and all this, and you would have reopened the government will look we were ready to take the deal that the vice-president offered and Senator McConnell took that offer. He passed a Bill or I'm talking about. He didn't earn steno. Senator McConnell did pass that Bill in the last congress. He sent us a Bill and the Republicans in the house of resumes rejected the Senate bills the Republican bills. "This Sunday shutdown politics. President Trump insists wall, not he'll you can't really do the kind of job we have to do on less. You have a major powerful barrier. And that's what we're going to have to have. But now he faces new democratic house to the speaker of the house, Nancy Pelosi extent, you this gavel? And the new speaker. Does he have any doubt that we're not doing a wall? The president is talking tough descend said he'd keep the government closed for a very long period of time months or even years. Absolutely. I said that but as grasping for an exit strategy, my guest this morning acting White House chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney. House majority leader democrat, Steny Hoyer and Republican Senator Susan Collins plus impeachment politics. Pelosi says Democrats should be careful about impeachment talk, but will should be able to stop her new activist member also gender politics. No sooner had Elizabeth Warren all but announced for president. Then we began to see stories like this somehow suggesting Warren like Hillary Clinton is to unlock -able to win then bait over different treatment women get on the presidential campaign. Trae joining me for insight and analysis are NBC news Capitol Hill. Correspondent Casey Hon. David Brooks columnist for the New York Times, former congresswoman Donna Edwards and Matthew Kahn, Nettie editor and chief of the Washington. Free beacon. Welcome to Sunday. It's meet the press. From NBC news in Washington, the longest running show in television history. This is Chuck. Good Sunday morning. And welcome to our first meet the press of the new year, the government shutdown is now in its sixteenth day. And well second year tying it for the third longest in history and the problems for everyone are piling up. Literally, though, national parks are open. They are not staffed which means a lot of places are beginning to look like this. In addition, the federal food stamp program, which services thirty eight million Americans faces severe cuts and some one hundred and forty billion dollars in tax refund. Your money could be frozen or delayed for Democrats who were once willing to provide funding the goal now seems to be deny President Trump of victory any victory and for the president the wall has become a symbol. It's no longer just about keeping illegal immigrants out. It's about keeping his base in Senator Lindsey Graham made that point clear on FOX earlier this week if he gives it now that's the end of twenty nineteen in terms of him being effective president. That's probably the end of his. Presidency. We have critical players from all corners of this drama, President Trump's acting chief of staff whose negotiating for the White House. The house majority leader a democratic negotiator and a moderate Republican Senator who's up for reelection in twenty twenty who's caught in the middle. It's a staring contest in which neither the president nor the Democrats and incentive to blink. Because each views this shutdown as a political winner and necessity for them. I'm very proud of doing what I'm doing. I don't call. It a shutdown what the government shutdown in its third week. President Trump is digging in descending keep the government closed for a very long period of time months or even years. Absolutely. I said that I don't think it will. I am prepared. President Trump said Friday that if Democrats don't give them five point six billion dollars for a border wall. He can use emergency powers to divert Pentagon funds. We could call a national emergency and build it very quickly. And so another way of doing it. But if we can do it through a negotiated process. We're giving that a shot the president's latest threats come as he is boxed in and grasping for an offer that will not alienate conservative media and the political base. He needs for fights ahead. You gotta stay. The course you can't back down. Now. The president's base is now deeply invested in this shutdown. The president has taken a stand and it's time for the Republicans to do the same in December the president. Checked it a short term spending Bill passed by the Senate after it was panned by immigration hawks. We set out a number five point six billion very firm on a number still some Republicans who face tough reelection fights are pleading with the president to end the shutdown wall or no wall. Let's get the government open and have a debate that the American people can be proud of. Meanwhile, some allies of the president floated a short term plan to grant work permits to so-called dreamers in exchange for the wall funding present the five dollars. We need for.
