"Presented by the American petroleum institute. Hey, good morning playbook. I'm ragu manavalan, a few things we're watching. On Wednesday, January 18th. Scott Wong and Kyle Stewart from NBC News did the work on putting together a comprehensive list of where all the antagonizes who slowed Kevin McCarthy's extension to the speakership ended up after committee assignments were settled on Tuesday. A few of the notables representatives Andy Biggs, Dan bishop, and Matt Gaetz, kept their seats on the judiciary committee, representative Lauren boebert, who, like Biggs and Gates voted present on the final ballots, want to see on the oversight and accountability committee. In addition to keeping her seat on natural resources, representative Michael cloud won a spot on the coveted appropriations committee and representative Byron donalds, who was nominated to run against the McCarthy for speaker and flipped to him on the 12th ballot, was awarded a seat on financial services, as well as a spot on the house GOP steering committee, which doles out panel assignments. And Florida governor Ron DeSantis is getting prodded to jump into the 2024 presidential primary field from an unexpected and distant camp. Michigan Republicans, as Politico colleague, Alex eisenstadt reports this morning last month, Byron posthumous, the Republican floor leader in the Michigan state House, flew to Florida and hand delivered desantis a letter encouraging him to run for president. As Alex writes, while the letter doesn't explicitly endorse desantis over former president Donald Trump, it illustrates simmering discontent with the former president among Republicans, following a series of elections that saw the party get bludgeoned at the ballot box. The 2024 race for president isn't the only jogging occurring these days, Senate primaries are starting to come into shape for more on that. Here's playbook deputy editor Zack Stanton, an editor, Mike de bonus. We're only in January 2023, we are some 22 months from the next election, but we have already seen some significant sort of movement in the 2024 political landscape in Ohio where senator sherrod Brown is going to be defending the seat and what is increasingly a solid Republican state. Matt Dolan, the surprisingly moderate Republican businessman and owner of the Cleveland guardians baseball team. He's entering the race according to NBC's Henry Gomez. He reported Sunday. That's an interesting development in this race. Obviously he will not be the last Republican to enter this contest, but definitely interesting that someone is staking a claim to that to that Wayne early on. And then we also have my own home state of Michigan. Where could we how could we forget attack? How can we forget Michigan? Where longtime incumbent Debbie Stephen now has announced that she is not going to seek reelection in 2024.

"Trump has made this state maybe his biggest priority in the midterm elections this year In addition to Cromwell he's actually endorsed more than a dozen other candidates here who are running in November and he made it clear at that rally a couple weeks ago that he wants his supporters specifically in positions where they control the voting process Remember this is not just about 2022 This is about making sure Michigan is not rigged and stolen again in 2024 Remember that but miles this tease up the question Trump lost Michigan in 2020 by more than a 150,000 votes How much sway will his endorsement hold in the process That honestly is the biggest question heading into today's endorsement vote The race for attorney general specifically sets up a really stark divide within this state's GOP On one hand you have this Kalamazoo lawyer named Matthew to pernod who's never held elected office and who is fully bought into the conspiracy that the 2020 election was stolen And on the other side you have a guy named Tom Leonard who's the former speaker of the Michigan state House and he's considered a much more establishment Republican candidate I talked to Jason rose the former executive director of the state party Really what we're going to find out in this outcome is what the direction of the Republican Party is in Michigan for the foreseeable future If Matthew duper secures the nomination I think it will demonstrate that the maga wing of the party is in control of the party Roe was really skeptical however about just how viable these more far right choices who are expected to be selected today could be in the general election in November And pierce miles perks thanks so much Thank you Clinton versus Trump Trump versus Biden the really contentious campaign is for the new minister of the Arroyo unitary universalist community church in Southern California Gain a potassium local restaurant critic and donkey owner is recruited to join the search committee Even though she attends services only irregularly but she thinks it might be a good idea for her next book Author of the new novel search to read a section in which Dana takes minutes of a committee meeting Charlotte called the meeting to order let Chalice Jenny read poem by angelou Week three minutes approved Belinda demoed how to fold surveys in fourths for the order of service in thirds for mailings Discussed while folding how people could fill out more than one survey Belinda why would anyone want to Jenny I do 20 surveys so we get a woman except filling out even one is two boring Belinda That's why we'll be lucky to get even a 60% response When done folding Charlotte produced mailing labels to near rebellion but it only took 15 minutes Adrian Another great night on the search committee Jenny grown and Michelle hunter for the novelist and James beard award winning food writer by the way joined us now from altadena California Thanks so much for being with us I'm always happy to talk to another James beard award winner So am I Let me put it that way Okay it's a search committee for a minister but oh I mean millions and millions of Americans will find this landscape familiar right Surveys seminars workshops I like to think that anyone who's ever done time on a committee will find something to relate to in this book Does Dana however find that she cares more about this assignment that she's kind of given herself than she thought she would Yes she comes in rather cynically She's just finished touring for her latest book She's getting pressure to come up with her next idea The search committee comes up as a possibility It's a yearlong commitment involves a series of procedures that will give structure to her book it involves people It involves recipes and eating So she decides she's going to use it as her next book which is a little cynical but as time goes on she finds that she cares more than she thought she did and she gets into quite a battle towards the end I say that's with respect Unitarian universalists are a distinct group In the religious landscape of the world they can I hope I say this correctly they can have ambivalent feelings about God Well they certainly can a Unitarian universalist can believe anything It's really whoever you are wherever you are on your spiritual path You're welcome We get vignettes of the number number of the candidates that the committee considers One of them by the way is a wiccan how did you feel about these characters I recognize you created them but they had to come from somewhere inside of your experience They all sort of came out of different facets of Unitarian universalism that I've looked at For example there's Perry who is actually an ordained Buddhist monk There's naive who as you said is a wiccan and she's a self identified environmental warrior And then there's sort of just a fantastic preacher She's such a good preacher that her churches keep getting much bigger than she even wants them to get And there's more too I wonder if anyone in almost any kind of business will as you suggest recognize this whole territory this landscape of committees and seminars and groups and declarations and mission statements and I will call it blah blah blah That sometimes drowns out which really vital Exactly I mean people have a common goal and they also have personalities And those frequently come into conflict with each other Their recipes in the back I by the way particularly want to try data's escarole salad with favas mint and pecorino While recipes in the book it's a wonderful added value for novels And I think novels might do a little better in today's market if they added recipes But tell us what they're doing here Well this goes back to the James beard award because I won for feature writing with recipes And the with recipes part always amused me because in one way it seemed a little bit like a pulled punch It's a feature but it has recipes meaning how serious a feature can it really be On the other hand it's like an added bonus like a cracker Jack prize Oh it's a feature but it has a recipe and for some reason I just always thought it would be fun to have a novel with recipes that would sort of maybe provoke the same oh the same feelings I found myself wondering why doesn't Ulysses have recipes You know Well actually I got partially the idea from my second novel James land I went to a book group and they cooked the food that I'd mentioned in the group There's a chef And it was so touching And fun Michelle hunter and her novel is search "Beep long beep Long Beach. A man wrote the Bible. The horse what she was. If it's a legitimate race. It was slut, right? Cooking can be fine. This weekend, miss massages. I told you those are never fun in my line of work. I've spent years warning about worst case scenarios if the modern Republican Party got its hands on the Supreme Court. And I was really hoping I was doing it in a preventative way. More than a predictive one. But it turns out that I was too optimistic. And now we're seeing all the shit that I've been warning you about this whole time. Take, for example, GOP state representative Mary Elizabeth Coleman from Missouri. Her state already enacted one of the nation's strictest abortion laws back in 2019, which is forced thousands of women to travel all the hell away to neighboring states like Illinois to obtain constitutionally protected medical procedures. Well, she wants to put a stop to that, too. And she's using the extra legal spy on your neighbor enforcement method to do it. She's crafted a new provision that would allow Missouri citizens to sue a resident. If they traveled out of state to obtain an abortion, so legally traveling to legally do a legal thing could get you sued. Now, this isn't a law yet, but she's attached the provision to several anti abortion bills that have already made their way through the committee. And even if they don't pass, just the threat of these laws can have a chilling effect on both women seeking abortions and abortion providers. That's why they kept crafting these laws even back when the scotus was still taking constitutionality more or less seriously. And of course, the pitchforks and torches enforcement method is designed to get around the most obvious problem of how the fuck anybody could keep track of this without installing people at the state line to check your fucking papers. But somehow, the Mary Elizabeth Coleman didn't earn the title of my least favorite Midwestern Republican state legislator this week. That one goes to Republican candidate for the Michigan House Robert Reagan. Now, to be fair, the point he was trying to make wasn't a bad one. He was on a live stream with a group of nut jobs buying into Trump's lies about the 2020 election being stolen, and he's trying to dismiss their calls to action. And that's the kind of point you think would be easy to make without alluding to your daughters getting raped. Let alone soft peddling an endorsement of it. But that's why you're overqualified to be a GOP candidate for Michigan state House. After explaining that it would be too late to act on their grievances even if they were true, he explained, quote, I tell my daughters, well, if rape is inevitable, you should just lie back and enjoy it. So yeah, kudos, by the way, to the only woman on the panel a Republican strategist that called him out on what a terrible analogy it was and what terrible advice it was. But luckily, Reagan's daughter doesn't strike me as the type to take anything lying down. She responded to the controversy by tweeting out quote if you're in Michigan in 18 plus, please, for the love of God, do not vote for my dad for state rep. Tell everyone. So at least his inability to give sound advice is genetic. Anyway, after quoting that asshole, I need some mouthwash, so we're all wrapped things up there and I'll hand you back over to Noah heath and Eli. Thank you, lucinda. Next up in headlines, we actually have some good news. Hate pastor Greg Locke is facing consequences. Now, okay, most of the consequences are pretty minor this week and he is in fact a plague spreading bigot who deserves a very long list of truly terrible things that I did brainstorm, but Andrew vetoed every single one. This is actually a fun several hours of texting between the doors. Lots of itchy scenarios. I was like the theme of my stuff. But the actual consequences were still a small victory, and we're going to take it and we're going to talk about it. In response to his very literal witch hunt that he's been doing lately, Locke's global vision Bible church has been dealing with an influx of rosti voicemail and roasty physical mail, including, according to Locke, actual evil witchcraft, this is serious. Stop sending us witchcraft. They got some hexing in the mail. Crystals and stuff. And he's convinced he got hacked by like witches. And I'm pretty sure we.

"Um then we were. We are more fearful than we were. Um we have gone down a wrong road and is there any way that can take us back to the right road that is pervasive on social media. Why has it been easy to overlook or minimize the reality that our policies in the wake of 9 11 have caused great suffering to great numbers as you mentioned earlier of innocent civilians in places like Iraq and Afghanistan? I think that there is, you know, because we're myopic Americans, Although every country is myopic in the same way, we just have broader economic and military reach. Um, I think that I think memory comes and goes in waves. I do think that, um, if you know, I said this before, and maybe it's a It's a crazy piece of optimism. I think the kind the time will come when we will manage to get all the parts of the story told, But the drones are invisible to us the misery of people 6000. And miles away, is invisible to us, even when it's reported. It's remote. Um and, uh and a great war was unleashed. You know, a massive international military activity was decided on September 11th and happened. Am, and we're going to be living with that for a very long time. And early suggestions that, um the attacks themselves might be a good reason to look critically at our foreign policy were deemed so toxic Lee unpatriotic that they really just didn't happen. I think that there I think the idea of a methodical evaluation of domestic and foreign policy did take place. I think people were trying. I think you got buried in all the noise. And I don't think I'll try to put this is Paula as delicately as possible. I think both the right and the left have to look at the role in this in terms of coming up with oversimplifying grand narratives that there are always desperate to prove, and eager to prove, as opposed to finding a sort of measured way of not blaming the victims. The people who died the country that was attacked while simultaneously recognizing that a reasonable and moderate response might have contained some dramatic changes and how the US represented itself. Internationally. What do you see? Is the through line between 9, 11 and 1/6 the day that US citizens stormed the capital. Um, For starters, the pervasiveness of conspiracy theories. There's no question that they were, um there were conspiracy theories before 9 11. But 9 11 really was like a workshop and conspiracy theories for the Internet age and a lot of the same people who kind of cut their teeth on 9 11 conspiracy theories, you know, worked their way up to election for Conspiracy theories and covid conspiracy theories. That's certainly part of it. The spread of misinformation, I think massive and understandable and widespread mistrust of the US government, um but manifesting itself. Unfortunately, not in a kind of joint bipartisan effort at reform, but on turning against each other, Um, is certainly part of this as well. Um, but there's something more concrete here and I would recommend your view your listeners might take a look at, uh, essay by Michael and Tana conservative, Um, conservative speaker and politician. In the Claremont Review of Books in 2000 and 16 called the, uh, the flight 93 moment. Where he basically said in flight. 93 is the is the plane that went down over Pennsylvania 9 11, and he basically said that the election of Hillary Clinton in 2016 was a flight 93 moment. We're conservative conservatives ought to charge the cockpit or die. Um it was an extraordinary way is kind of re situating 9 11, as if to say that if you lose an election that's like Al Qaeda taken over the cockpit of your plane that a foreign Please speaking, but his language was so Love between just saying conservatives. You've got to jump into action to actually saying no Extralegal responses are now appropriate rush that cockpit. Um the idea, though. That's what Patriots do that You knocked down the doors that a Democrat and power means that your plane has been hijacked. Rushed the doors. Take your chances. Maybe you die. "And we start with people in Detroit. I know that Trump's team spent a lot of time questioning on they did not raise evidence at all about the veracity of the election results there. So what are you hearing from Detroiters? Yeah, so I talked to Detroit. Her name's Brandon Snyder. He had the civic engagement organization called Detroit Action. He went to the City Convention center, where votes were being counted in the days after the election, And if you'll recall a couple 100 Trump supporters were there many of them chanting Stop the steel! And Detroit is a majority Black city. So Snyder puts the blame on former president Trump for trying to silence black voters and for someone to try and take that away. You know, someone who has not been a friend of you know black communities. You know is really, really, really frustrating or really, really hurtful and yeah, so looking at what's happening this week, he says that Trump should face consequences for trying to undermine the election. When it comes to Trump supporters. I know there's been some news about some of the state's top Republicans. What have you What can you tell us? Some trump supporters are following the lead of the state's top Republican Mike Shirky. He's the Senate majority leader here in Michigan, and news reports dropped this week of a leaked video. It was of a meeting that Shirky had with Republican leaders at a diner. One of them recorded the conversation and in it, Sharkey says he doesn't think that it was Trump supporters who stormed the U. S Capitol building that it was a hoax and that it was all pre arranged. To be clear. That's not what the evidence shows. But Shirky stood by his comments in a hot mic moment on the Michigan Senate floor on Wednesday. So I went to a diner this morning where a county GOP had a breakfast and the Republicans there. A lot of them agreed with Turkey that the right at the U. S Capitol was a hoax. I talked to the West Naka Curie. He's a Livingston County commissioner. He was wearing a red Michigan for Trump hat, and he said he wouldn't go so far as to call it all a hoax. But he did call the impeachment of farce. Let's take a listen. It's unconstitutional, even if it were constitutional what they're charging President Trump with incitement is far fetched. These air just a few quotes and I don't know. Is there any pulling out there that can give us a sense of what's going on? There is yes. So The Detroit News published a results published result from a poll this week that it conducted of 600, Michigan residents. 50% of them said that they were for impeaching former President Trump and 45% said that they were against so that shows you just how divided the state is when it comes to politics. But one interesting fact out of that poll was that 70% of Michiganders said that they think Trump bears at least some responsibility for what happened at the U. S. Capitol. Why else do you think Michigan is significant? In this moment? What can you tell us about the rest of the country? Yeah, I think a lot of observers point to Michigan as this sort of bellwether state that what happens here is sort of reflective of the national political scene. And in this case, it seems you're really true. It came up in the impeachment hearings when representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the Democratic House impeachment manager. Who's leading the charge for impeachment, said that the siege on the Michigan State House last spring quote was a dress rehearsal for the seat on the U. S. Capitol on January 6th..

"The United States Capitol that day. Some do appear to have engaged in pre planning and premeditation, according to the Justice Department, including small bands of members of violent extremist groups like the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers, But many, many more people. Scott, who attended that rally showed up later at the Capitol and went inside people who have since expressed regret for their actions and say they got carried away that day. I don't think that the Democratic House impeachment managers would say that the idea that some people engaged in premeditated action eliminates the possibility that many other people followed president former President Trump's instructions that they went to the capital even before he stopped speaking. You think I'd point out is that what the House impeachment managers case seemed to suggest was that were argue for is that former President Trump engaged in a pattern? Of engaging his followers using rhetoric designed to rile them up with lies about election fraud in that uncertain occasions before January, 6th They took action. They took action at the Michigan State House. They took action to try to pull over or Carella Biden Harris Campaign bus and Texas that former President Trump. New people sometimes acted on his words, and he should have been very careful in part as Jamie Raskin, the lead manager, says, because he was president of the United States, and he took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution, The Congress and his own vice president, Mike Pence, who was in danger that day. I think we are carry your line faded out there on us a little bit or faded out on me a little bit, But I want to turn to something else, Which is you know there. Bruce Castor brought up a couple of things that David shown, and Jonathan Van Ramin had not brought up and one of them. Was the phone call that President Trump made to Georgia's secretary of state Brad Rapids Burger in which he asked him to find 11,000 some odd votes, which would help him win the election. The impeachment managers say this phone call is evidence that the president was doing the wrong thing Much in the way the phone call to Ukraine's leader was evidence of him doing the wrong thing. The two previous lawyers earlier in the day didn't bring it up. What was Yeah. I was making about that phone call. Castor was pointing out that that in part that former President Trump was simply trying to engage and lawful activity that would have would have based on his concerns about election fraud, which we know did not take place in a widespread manner and then his own former attorney general Bill Barr said would not have changed the outcome of this election. Worth pointing out now? Well, this is now the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation by the district attorney in Fulton County, Georgia. So while this what we're watching now is an impeachment trial, not a criminal proceeding. Our local prosecutors are looking into this kind of looking into what they say was a NatElec to influence the outcome of the 2020 general election in Georgia. That's pretty serious stuff moving forward. Carry that call and the and the way that Trump's defense framed it today. I think it's too another big disagreement in the way that both sides have been framing things. And that is what we're in a lot from newscasters, saying that when President Trump was urging people to fight specifically on January 6, But they also noted several other examples. He was just issuing them and urging them to take part in the normal political process and get ready for the next election. I think it's worth taking through some of the many different steps that the president took her called for from the moment that he, uh Lost the election. As far as you know, news outlets like the AP were concerned through the Electoral college voting through that certification of the Electoral College. I mean, just to mention a few of them. There's that phone call pressuring Brad Rapids Burger. Several other things as well, including, you know, supporting a Supreme Court case of Of some states, asking other states most to essentially thrown out. It's got their number of public steps. You don't have to take the house managers, word for it. First, there were something like 60 years 62 lawsuits, which went nowhere. The Supreme War didn't want to bother with them in in. In fact, Trump appointed federal judges often dismiss them out of hand is some somewhat frivolous We had that we had Trump Former president Trump leaning on members of Congress and senators to try to do his bidding. We had allegations that President Trump was going behind the back of the acting attorney general at the time of the Justice Department to try to gin up other actions for the Justice Department and potentially the Homeland Security Department to take intro and Scott all of that seemed to fail. Putting all of the emphasis on Vice President Mike Pence, and that day, January 6th And with much more to talk when it comes to that, and the pressure that that Trump put intense that day, we're going to take a short break. "Dr. Joel Ostro is a professor of political science specializing in Democracies how they're created and how they fail, And he's continuing a conversation with us right now, about to the health of our democracy in the United States, especially in the wake of What happened last week at the U. S Capitol, where you had crowds chanting Stop the steel because folks felt that the election was stolen somehow. Based around Wrong information, made up information and of false narrative has been created in this case about the election, but I feel like there have also been other false narratives throughout. I mean, you could sort of pick your Topic. If it's the topics about race with black lives, matter or other issues of policy, and like what we saw on January 6th. It's like, no, we don't like the outcome of the election where we've Were glomming onto this idea that is made up and we're going to go with it, because that's what we believe even though we don't have any credible evidence to support it. Um, to see that on such a level. I mean, I know that it's been there. I know that people have done that in the past, but to see this culminate with that event at the Capitol. Was was pretty astounding. And you think to yourself well as they chant Stop the steel that that is made up. It's false, you know? It's not that all Republicans are bad people. However. If you're in an organization If you're in a crowd. And all around that crowd are people with swastikas and bowed in wacko conspiracy theories and calling for insurrection. After attempted insurrection, weapons Don't you have two choices? Neither you support and continued to welcome more of those. And you are that Where you leave it. I firmly believe that the already is an institution of Republican Party. And not regain legitimacy because it has embraced Trump, who is just a tool of all of this right? I've been trying to describe it has been a quarter century in the making. It's McConnell Throughout the eight years, the Obama administration Look at the file language that men used Lindsey Graham doesn't get to say now. I want no part of this. He helped create it. He is it. Hence. Days or the Georgia run off elections. Which means what was it Four days before the insurrection. Listen to the speech he gave in to it. It was every bit is inciting violence is Ted Cruz's speech of Giuliani's speech that Trump's You know, our Our Democratic system is built on checks and balances. And I want to ask you You look at you look at democracy is how they're created, how they fail. And what we've heard, you know is that boy over the last four years, five years our democratic system, those guard rails have been tested. It's sort of like the biggest stress test that our democracy has ever endured. But I want to ask you. Do you think that these guard rails? These checks and balances are holding up effectively Have they worked effectively or are they in need of some strengthening the guard rails? Or not. Separation of powers in the shared powers in the Constitution does the formal institutions Guard rails that make all of that work are more Cultural norms, political, cultural nuance, and those are the ones of tolerance and for parents that I was talking about. So it may sound I have an intolerant tone. Intolerance. Of intolerance is not in the car. I have no tolerance or not she'll to I have no tolerance for fascism. I have no tolerance for the club and I have no tolerance for the Confederacy in its symbols. I have no tolerance for insurrection against the Constitution because Any American Hold certain truths to be self evident. And I want to see the preservation of Political system based on popular sovereignty, and we, the people. In North America. And prevent to happen. We need to have Tolerance and for parents and the Republican Party long ago rejected both of those Explicitly openly. Publicly is a matter of strategy and policy and platform. Over and over again until That has become accepted the standard. What can we do here? What? What can we do as as a people in this democracy? What can we do if we're having this conversation and Clearly you are. We're doing an analysis here, and we're sort of talking about a few different things in our democracy and then the weakening of it. What can we do? Going forward? Well, you know, there is Um, modicum of hope here. Because what is required is for people of courage, like a former student of minds that they are heartfelt Ex the day after the instruction About abandoning all of the political activism and organizations in the Republican Party basically say, what have I done? And we need good people, not the elected Republicans, who continue to quote themselves listener too scared to think of business from a good people. Like this student like a couple of county clerks, like like that House member in the Michigan State house just before the instruction. And you know people from the Lincoln Project and other other lifelong Republicans, who no longer hold office who have left party. I'm talking about rank and file party members. Me to create an alternative and the deal. Legitimize the extremism Look We know we've always known that about 30% of our population supports white nationalist white supremacists, extremism they had to live in the cracks. Michigan State House, Senate close over 'threats of violence' during Electoral College meeting
"Looked for a time earlier today. Like things could get ugly in michigan. The state closed its house and senate office buildings over what they said were credible threats of violence during today's electoral college meeting and then republican state representative gary isan suggested he and other republicans would disrupt the electoral college vote. He also predicted there. Would be violence prompting this. Can you assure me that this is going to be a safe day in in lansing. Nobody's gonna get hurt no. I don't know what we're doing. Today is chartered. Here's it been done after. Gary isan made those comments michigan. Republican legislative leaders pulled him from his committee assignments. Meanwhile the scene in lansing was thankfully ultimately cau- just a dozen or so pro-trump protesters showing up outside the capitol a chilly day and when he grow group of republican electors tried to enter that building michigan state. Police turn them away. Half of those call was much an often from holding or ignore taking part of your process. Anybody else thank ben check in inside the democratic electors about the people's business where they elected joe biden. Starting barnes. has the tally been completed. Yes lieutenant governor. The elected unanimously cast. Sixteen votes for joseph r biden. I'm joined now by michigan's democratic secretary of state johnson benson earlier. This month had her home surrounded by angry trump supporters. Some of them harmed who falsely accused her of allowing the election to be stolen. But start secretary of state with your your top line on. Today i was. I was a bit worried when i saw the news about closing the house and the senate but it seemed like things went smoothly. How do you feel went today. I think it was a great day for democracy. Chris was really a reflection of all the work that went into this election to ensure that we were able to have a high turnout election In the midst of the pandemic all the work that's happened. Since the polls closed on november third to ensure the votes were counted accurately it securely and really this was the the end result of a long and winding road that every step of the way we work to make sure that the voters well was heard and democracy was protected. We have seen now. Obviously there were arrests of a number of individuals who have been charged with allegedly plotting the kidnapping or execution of the democratic governor. Gretchen whitmer You had people outside of your house Some of them armed a protesting. There were concerned today in arizona. As i understand it where the leading of the electors was moved to an undisclosed location. What does it do to democratic governance and democracy when this sort of threat of violence hangs over the activities of folks. What you know. I started my career in the south investigating and hate crimes all around the country and was really instilled there with the strong sense in an acute awareness of just how much oftentimes does have to be preserved in the potential for violence that that could engender to ensure that democracy does prevail. And so that's never been lost on me and many of us including my friends secretary hobson in arizona. And it's something that we're actually acutely aware rows and willing to with to endure in order to ensure that our democracy is protected. A lot of people have said to me this year. Did you really sign up for this and my response is absolutely. I absolutely signed up to put everything on the line to protect the will of the people to protect our democracy. None of us of course predicted all of the turns of events that have occurred since the polls closed But that said we're ready and will continue to be ready. We'll continue to stay safe to ensure that our democracy and turn is also safe. Something i've seen a in many states across the nation in reaction is a real circular logic from republicans in which after touting or tolerating or even endorsing these blue to chris conspiracy theories now pointing and saying well people. Are you know. There's a lot of concern and using that as a predicate for restrictions on voting. Well we're gonna have to shutdown mail in voting. Well we're gonna have to take another look at this. Well we're gonna have to do voter. Id and signature matching all these things. How much you seen that michigan. Do you think there's going to be a battle now about ballot access. The uses these conspiracies as a kind of weaponized tool. Yeah sure it again. That's also what we've seen. Throughout the history of our democracy people create a fire and then create an idea of what needs to put that fire out and often times. Election administrators are stuck in the middle and that voters are are stuck in the middle. When i believe needs to happen is we need to one come together and actually listen to each other and try to heal this. Divide right now but to do so. On the basis of facts and data and truth we all have to be working from the same set of facts here. Facts and truth have actually been unequivocal undeniable throughout this entire process. We had a high turnout election michigan. Five point five million people voted in the midst of the pandemic. It was secure. The results were accurate. So we can start from there. We can find ways to improve the process moving forward making data driven decisions but we also have to do is acknowledge the impact of the conspiracy theories in false information that has been spread by many actors throughout this process and correct that before trying to solve for any potential issues. Moving forward right michigan secretary of state jocelyn benson. Thank you so much for being with me.
