"I am joined by our next guest, Major General Paul Rogers, the advocate general and the director, the average in general, the Michigan National Guard and the director of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. So a K a. My boss. Welcome to the show, sir. Good mornings and that I'm happy to be here. Happy to be a guest, and I appreciate everything you do to get the message out for veterans and military. Appreciate that, Sir. I will say that you know you. You run some excellent senior leader meetings and so many times we're having a brief out to you, but I get I'm excited that I get to put you in the hot seat today and ask you questions about the great work that you're doing in the state. So thanks for joining us. I'm so this show today we're talking about national military appreciation month and armed Forces Day. You know the guests they are. Viewers or listeners have heard us some of the information about the history of that today and we've spoken with this outstanding, uh, future veteran today as well. We'll talk about that in a little bit. But I would love to hear your thoughts on the importance of recognizing service members and honoring their service to our country. Yeah. You know, I want to start out first by again thanking you for this opportunity to represent the servicemen and women who call Michigan home, even those who might be on active duty and are not within our state, but especially those who served with in our state. We have all branches of the services and then all components. Reserve National Guard and some active duty a small contingent of active duty here in Michigan. So you know to represent them and be the voice for what they do each and every day throughout the year for our nation, and then for our state is an honor for me. So thank you so much for including me in this broadcast. You know, it's your question. Um the men and women who choose to put the uniform on our very, very select group of citizens and sometimes non citizens. Those who seek citizenship are are members of our roles if you will know, and this is their path to getting their citizenship. But these young men and women joined the military because they want to serve something much bigger than themselves. They want to contribute to society. They want to contribute to our nation. They do it for many, many different reasons. They do it for personal pride. They do it because they had family members. They do it out of a sense of duty. They also do it because of the benefits that are afforded them, whether it's health care or educational benefits. They do that also what's common across all of those groups, and all of those motivations is the willingness to serve selflessly. To put oneself before you know Tonto before the needs of others to support the needs of others, you know, to offer themselves their time and their talents to support our nation and to support our communities, and that's why I think it's important to recognize him take a moment out of our year. To stop and just remind ourselves that less than 1% 1 1/10 of 1% of Citizens of Michigan and 1/10 of 1% of Citizens of the United States choose to serve in the military. So it's a very small select group of folks and to take a moment of time to just stop and pause and thank them for their service, and their sacrifice, I think is very, very important. You know, that's great information. Sure, sir. We did talk about that with the National Guard member that we spoke with earlier today and just the pride and knowing that you're part of that small percentage of individuals who've chose to honor your country. I mean, that's that is great in and of itself and And you know, you talked about the group of men and women who serve Can you give us some perspective of how many people are serving? And is there a cap like an other people join? I mean, is there cap as to how many people can join the National Guard? No, there really, isn't you? No way have what's called the Force structure. We have a certain set of units both in the Air Guard and the Army guard And they do have an objective strengths. The number of people who make up that unit but we have the ability to accept folks with many different talents, very diverse background and we actually seek that diversity, but we're not I wouldn't They were kept by numbers were always seeking people who have that commitment to serve. You have a lot of pride in being an American. We have a lot of pride in being a Michigan dir and you want to give back to their communities. So so we eagerly recruit members of our society, members of our community and quite often we refer to ourselves of the community based organization because members from a community can choose to join a unit in their community and continue to Live in their community throughout their their adult life and careers, And that's what makes the national Guard so special. It's your neighbor serving in military and giving back to the nation of giving back to the the local community, so there is no cap. We have the Air National Guard at three different installations of Fidel Pena in Selfridge and then in Battle Creek, But the members come from across the state. In fact, from across the country, some people travel in to serve on that weekend duty with their unit and then the Army National Guard has a presence in 41 different communities spread across the upper peninsula and the lower peninsula. And we have our memories. Our readiness centers in 41 of those communities and again, those communities draw those units draw from all of the surrounding counties and townships from their membership. So there's a lot of opportunity, great opportunity and it just comes down to what is your passion? What is your interest or their career objectives that you have, and we can find you a home that matches those career objectives and helps you achieve your goals. That's great, sir. So for all of you all that were asking those questions out there. There's still an opportunity for you to join. So if you have prior service, or.

"Member of the I. C. Frank Beckmann Show News Talk 7 60 wjr. The show Everybody We want to go to Washington right now and check in with one of our Congress. People there. She's she's a rookie in Congress, the Republican from Romeo, Michigan's 10th district. Lisa McClane is on the other end of our line. She is on the Republican side, as I said she has written a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. And she wants to be briefed about the Michigan National Guard being redeployed to Washington, D. C. Let's find out more about that now from Congresswoman McClane is on the other end of our line. Good morning to you. Hey, Good morning, Frank. How are you? I'm good, but I've got to tell you my first reaction when I saw this story was you're kidding, right? Yeah, Why do we need the Michigan National Guard Back in Washington. Well, that's the same question that I'm asking. So you and I are on the same sheet of music right here. Um, and I don't know. Maybe we need him there. I don't know is it is the key is I don't understand why the lack of disclosure I don't understand the shroud of secrecy, especially since we're having so much trouble back here in our state distributing the vaccine. Maybe these National Guard could be more helpful distributing the vaccine or whatnot. But frankly, it's all about this disclosure is if there is an imminent threat What's the harm in letting us know what it is? I mean, I have to protect my staff. I have to protect my family. I just don't understand the secrecy. And and that's what you're getting right now is is just silence when you ask any questions. Who you've written the letter did. Nancy Pelosi the speaker? Have you gotten any response yet? Congresswoman McClane? Zero. Hero. So from a party that talks about unity and really want to, you know, do bipartisan efforts and unify the country. I don't understand how the secrecy Help, and the lack of disclosure is helping do that. Mm hmm. And so you know, you've been appointed to the House Armed Services Committee. I understand, as well as the Education and Labor Committee as well. And I know that's going to keep you very, very busy, but not so much that you're ever gonna lose sight of what's going on with Corona. No. I mean, I believe in people do I do I respect the coronavirus? Absolutely 100%, but I don't hear it. And I believe in the people, not the government. I believe that political people collaborating together innovating together. I believe we can figure out how to do both. I believe in this word called and I believe we can figure out how to open up the economy and keep the people safe. I believe people can figure that out. And are you in favor of people using their own judgment in doing that, or should there be more more government involvement in controlling that behavior? I believe in individual liberties, and I believe in people and I think there should be less government involvement. Government needs to stick to figure it out how to get the vaccines to the people. That's what they need to spend their time, hon right now. Um, I believe that people can make good informed, educated decisions. Well, I tell you what, it I find difficulty in arguing with you on this one at all, because the Michigan National Guard in Washington D. C being read deployed. I'm with you. I don't I don't understand why we need them. There we've got We've got enough Guardsmen and police officers in D. C. I would think to take care of the capital the way it's always been taken care of. We We do We do. We absolutely do. And what is almost alarming is, um why? Why? No disclosure. It kind of makes you think that Is this just a style over substance or symbol of realism over substance. You know, if there is a credible threat, I want to be the first to noble because I gotta protect my staff. But this proud of secrecy doesn't make any sense at all. And then you and then you double down with wanting to keep a fence around the capital. I mean, Frank, this is the party that wants to tear down, care down our border wall and open up Americans. Americans to threat, But this is the same party that now wants to build a fence around the Capitol Hill to defend themselves. Well. I say this a lot. If it wasn't for double standards, I don't think we have any standards at all. Which is it? Yeah, And this is not just a 4 ft high fence that we're talking about it. No, no, it's not for the people's house. It's not very warm and welcoming for the people. You know, on the actions of a few should not speak for the actions of everyone. Let's deal with the issues at hand and deal with the individuals at hand. Um and take care of the issue were America, Frank, We're better than this. Come on, let's get back to work. By the way. How tall will that fence beer? Is it? You know, I don't know the exact but it's tall. I can tell you that you need to be about 10 ft. But don't it's tall. All right. We'll go with 10 ft. That's that's tall enough to keep anyone out of guarantee of that leased in McLean. We we appreciate it. And, hey, there's one of the question I want to ask you and that is about Joe Biden. I just mentioned the president has withdrawn the spending cuts that President Trump made during the final days in office. 73. Spending cuts all reversed by Joe Biden. And this is this is some stunning stuff because it's gonna total about $27 billion. Where's all the money coming from? I have no idea in the issue is that it's not there The death that we are putting on our kids and our grandkids with absolutely zero conversation about how we're going to repay that. Is baffling to me. What do you love to go to the grocery store by a bunch of groceries and then just send the bill to your neighbor? I mean, we have got to start looking at how we're gonna pay down this national debt. It's scary. Oh, indeed you are You old enough to remember the rock group Bachman Turner Overdrive by the way, Bto bto younger than their big hit song, which was You ain't seen nothing yet. Yes,.

"You don't know if it's going to and you have to make sure that reporters safety is his first and foremost. Can you tell us a little bit about what? What the build up was around Lanting over the past couple of weeks and then leading up to Sunday. Sure, you know, I think it's maybe one of those situations where news organizations are a little bit in a situation similar to the police where you you're not necessarily expecting Anything huge or dramatic, But you really have to prepare for that. Just in case So, you know, we certainly had a large team of reporters in Lansing on Sunday. I mean, I'm here already. But way sent some some reporters and photographers from Detroit just Make sure we had everything covered. And the main reason I think was because of what happened at the U. S capitol on January. 6. Where this You know this. Terrible. Um This thing just completely. Went out of control. People were killed. And you have the prospect of of people ransacking the U. S capitol, which is pretty amazing, and you know Certainly we weren't expecting the same thing that happened here. But there were you know, the FBI had put out bulletins and there were concerns that there that there could be there could be trouble. There could be armed protesters, and and so we wait. Just make sure we would be ready if something like that happened. That's the thing the FBI is monitoring chatter. Social media sites are being monitored and people are on their talking about getting together and showing up, and there's a lot of Angry speech in some cases, and so you you have to prepare for the worst. If you don't have the people there. You can't scramble and get him at the last minute. We saw what happened in Washington, D C s. How did Lansing look different? You know in the past Week versus you know, several months ago. Well, First of all, the capital has been pretty much locked down. You really can't get into the building unless the Legislature is in session, and certainly the Legislature was not in session on Sunday and They were scheduled to be in session tomorrow and Wednesday. But they really won't be and that's you know, for the same reason that there's concerns that this this There could be trouble right up to Inauguration Day, which is Wednesday and possibly beyond. But I think Wednesday is kind of the Cause when, uh most people are hoping that this will die down. So, so that's one thing the building's locked down. That's unusual. Um, On Friday, they put up a 6 ft. High fence around the building close to the buildings. You still have access to the Front lawn where most of these demonstrations take places. I mean, this is really not a sturdy fence at the temporary fence. It seems to be, you know, it's something that would be sort of a crowd control situation that wouldn't you know people wouldn't People wouldn't be able to just sort of, you know. Run roughshod towards the doors or anything like that, Um, you know, Per perhaps it's um, partly symbolic. And then on Sunday we had, you know, huge police presence. Michigan State police. Um, with a lot of You know, armor and and guns and and also the Michigan National Guard. The governor activated. There was Large number of Humvees and other military vehicles parked behind the Capitol, where you know most people would not have seen them because it's not on a street where you can drive by. It's kind of a It's kind of a walkway of pedestrian walkway between government buildings that were closed, but A few of them were also blocking streets and Lansing. So Kevin it was it was something I mean, I I've been here a while, like covered the rightto work demonstration, which was You know, certainly, In terms of large numbers of people that were there were mounted police there were you know, there were some punches thrown at that That was in 2012. But in terms of military and police presence, I think Sunday was the biggest I've ever seen at the Capitol, and it may be made it be the biggest that there there's been at least in recent history. And it's not feeling if you if you don't go.

NPR news. I'm Audie Cornish, and I'm Mary Louise Kelly will next week's inauguration Be safe in light of the mob that stormed the U. S Capitol last week. Joe Biden says he is not worried. I'm not concerned. About my safety, security or the inauguration. I'm not concerned, but set that against the warning the FBI just issued. The bureau says it has received information indicating armed protests are being planned at all 50 State capitals and at the U. S Capitol, which, of course, is where Biden's inauguration will take place outside on the West steps, so What needs to be done now to prevent more violence and to keep Biden and everyone else in attendance safe? Well, it is the U. S Secret service that's in charge of security for the inauguration. And so I want to turn to Mike White, who was head of the Secret Service's presidential Protective Division and work the last four inaugurations. Mr White. Welcome. Thank you, Mary Louise. I want people listening to know your experience with this is not only firsthand it's it's recent four years ago. After Donald Trump was sworn in and paraded towards the White House. You were just steps behind him. How confident are you that this inauguration will be safe? Mary Louise. I am extremely confident in the safety and security of this event, even given events of last week. I don't mean to say that it's not going to be a difficult and complex endeavor. But I know that the men and women who have dedicated themselves and are very committed to making sure that these events that take place surrounding the inauguration will be safe and secure. Well, let me invite you to get specific. What kind of things would be on the table in terms of making sure that next week goes considerably smoother than last week. Air you're talking different. Barriers, different parameters. Just more feet on the ground. More security officers, all of the above, You're going to see a new increased presence of law enforcement officials. You're going to see Around the clock, real time analysis of every intelligence stream that they could get their hands on increased covert surveillance that takes place. Social media platforms that are monitored much more closely. For until through those open source dialogues. You're going to see the perimeter set up. I know it was very involved in the 09 inauguration for President Obama and things like bridges into the city were closed. I would imagine those types of plans air being looked at and considered. May I ask is you watched events unfold last Wednesday at the Capitol Understanding? I'm sure you don't want to put blame on anyone in Capitol police or anybody else, but What struck you as that could have been better? That's not the way this means to look at the inauguration. You're right. Mary Louise. I'm not here to Monday morning quarterback Anything. I think the Capitol police officers that were on scene that day did the best they could with the resource is they had released. That's what I hope. I think people got caught flat footed in preparing. I think there was adequate intelligence that something like this could occur, and I don't believe that proper. Attention was paid to that to set up perimeters that should have been pushed. Out several blocks away from the capital to keep people from getting that close and overwhelming that Capitol police law enforcement Agency What's the biggest question on your mind as you look ahead to next week? I will say in the last inauguration, I was walking steps behind the president on that day, and at that point time, I was very concerned about something that may come at us from the air, a drone or an aircraft or something like that. And we had rehearsed and we had plans and we knew how we could get ourselves out of that situation. I think for that agent in charge that will be steps behind this president. I think it's going to be a different Type of threat that they're more concerned with. And I would imagine that's going to have to do with these protesters in some way, impacting checkpoints or overrunning a security perimeter toe work their way in closer to Ah protective venues..
