"You have a lot of siblings two older brothers and we look at small house like Kinda outside a town a little bit Like you had to go through a farm and up a hill and in our house was up there in a little neighborhood and yet two older brothers who I desperately tried to hang out with all the which essentially just men all right. You can hang out with us if you do whatever whatever like we need you to do so like street hockey or something. They'd be like well. You can play if you play goalie Which meant I would wear all the winter coats and they put me in front of goal in any phase protection at all or I wore like like a Jason. Who's the guy is that Jason Jason Myers? I don't know no Michael Myers the rubber mask okay then. Jj and I was wearing Jason's the one with the hockey man. Yeah some yeah and it was very smelly in plastic. But you know was was was just a Halloween mask it was. I don't know where they had gotten. My brother's actually played ice hockey too but they never volunteered. To let me wear their pads arrayed. You'll get cooties on them. And what is your folks. Do my mom worked in like an insurance claims. She has one of those jobs. If you ask me still if you asked me now I'm like our she's some reclaim some office. May Dad worked in a bunch of retail Steph just retail stores. Anyway John Wanamaker to toys arrest really have a choice when I was too old for it to be fun for me. Yeah Toys R. Us was always worked. Yeah well my dad was just a not that but also manager boy. Let's move. Ooh What was it a funny house where it was funny house growing up or something brothers were fun and funny you know like I was My brother used to do this. I don't know if this is even a good story to tell. But when I was little my brother you're in the right place or not sure whether it's farting was always very funny in my house. So my brother would be like if he had friends over. He'd be like come if you have to Fart. You have really funny parts so far. I was like come downstairs where they sleep over. I fart and then I'd run up stairs training performer and with special skills. The special skills column on your resume ready made unless I almost made it to juilliard. But and then go into. We're pretty sporty. Though right it was kind of a jockey family. My brothers played Ice Hockey. And I was really the sportiest of all of us Oh really yeah I played. I played everything I played. You know like early. You know when you're young. You play everything but I remember. I played baseball Mean three other girls. Were the only girls left in the baseball lead. They were like you guys got to move to softball. It's boys only when we were like well we won't fall but then you know I played soccer and then I got pretty serious about field hockey and track and then I ended up running track in college to a really. Yeah I also danced A day of tap jazz ballet on competitively recital. Yeah Yeah in. The van was all this stuff was all this stuff that was sort of like motivated from inside or or were you kind of. Yeah I really liked that you know like I think you know the fact that I gravitate towards track the most. I was also. That was my best sport. But also it's individual you know. I was at my best event was high jump and I think Hijab explains everything you need to know about me. Which is you jump into. Even if you win the me. They still raise the bar until you get out So you always leave on a loss being like so even if you want you can still be like. Yeah but I didn't get the last. I guess you know it's like never good enough event. There's necessary failure. Yeah Yeah like you have to fail at some. Yeah you have to fail to end I you know. I don't know I feel like that's kind of said what about who I am today. You're not failing out there. I guess that's coming down the road. You know that that Hijab but you know it's good. It's motivating it's helped me. Does it lessen as time goes on I mean? I think it's always like wanting the next thing kind of you know working towards the next thing which is good for Standup Yuccas. Yeah you do especially when you go back out on the road. You're like okay time to raise the bar. Yeah and it is. The standup is very much like a shark. Kind of life of you've got a building. There's always gotta be because you can't. You can't sit on old material. You can't be a band and play the hits you know. Yeah Yeah and like I remember. One Time Rock told me he goes He was like well. You know you're specialist just an advertisement for your tour and I was like yeah and it just like it's just like yeah. You have to do a special you can tore but then you have to get new materials so you can talk for another special and then it's just a hamster wheel right right. Well you're on it and enjoy your nuggets So you would then you went to college What did you say? Where'd you go again? I I read it but okay. I went to marry in Virginia and I Studied kinesiology which is the study of how the body moves. I want to be like an exercise. Physiologist like remember the old gatorade commercials where they'd have people running on a treadmill like those things. I wanted to be the guy running that experiment with the clipboard. Yeah right testing. The athletes and I loved clipboards paper CLIP head over here. My God what are you can still get us one in your act. Yeah Yeah Yeah but I wanted to do that. And so can use ya'll kind of like the major. That gets you into that kind of stuff which is really cool. Like I mean I took I took anatomy dissect it a human wow Which was really skirmishing with British permission and I could not McCain. Yeah and that was really cool and also Bros Because you know you're cutting up a human but I remember my my anatomy teacher. He was so used to it. Like it's definitely smells of Formaldehyde. When you're in there and my anatomy teacher was so used to it that he would eat sub while he checked our work and I was like. Is there really no other time of the day you could be the dropping shredded lettuce into a body cavity? I'm like there's this is only an hour of your day. Your set dinnertime or something. That's gotta be like fucking power move or something or some weird or you know something weird. Yeah did you each get your own your own body or to Jeff share we share there was like the two groups of five and We each had our own bodies each. Yeah I I had a guy and in high school I had a an anatomy and physiology class and we had rabbits no no had cats and yeah they we had formaldehyde cats. They came in plastic bags and We it was one cat per to students and I Like we all got our cats. We had to start like the first step was to skin the cat. Oh I skinned hours like my partner. The Young Woman that I was partners with just like you go. Hey you do it. All and I was pretty fascinated all of it but I skimmed it really faster like within minutes for taking up this. Yeah no no skin like take off the for you to remove the pelt yet. No basically so I did it really fast and everyone else was kind of just starting having no and there was no sort of instruction it was just like and now remove the pelt and everybody had me go around and I removed the pelts of all the K maybe twelve cats islet spent that whole day or that whole class. Going around and skinning. Everyone's caveat have some previous training or this new I. I grew up in the country in my family like my grandpa was hunter but I never had really. I'd never skinned anything. You know I mean it just I think I guess and well I you know I from a little as a little kid could cook so it was very very similar. Like breaking down a chicken. You know it's all kind of intuitive. You Know Mommy but I yeah so I was like I became. That was like assertive. It was sort of impressed by it but then also kind of like off put by how good I was at skinning. He ever shocked to find out that was his skill. You had. This is worry them or were you know I was more kind of I know I. I listen if I'm competent in anything. I'm happy incompetent. That by finding one thing you know I'm thrilled. You know I- This says a lot about I think again my personality and also why I'm often single bit when we got an sorry. This is GonNa go she out when we got to the penis. All the guys in my group were like because you have to cut it and you're supposed supposed to cut it long ways. Yeah Yeah I and well. Of course you're not gonNA cut it into into stakes little But in the macaroni all the guys were like no way. I don't WanNa do it again. I'll do it. No Yeah I mean look another guy in the Iowa's like and now the balls cross my life now but you didn't end up in kinesiology no I am. I was a class. A nerd in college. One of those people who I just didn't not only didn't it a I wanted to get the best in the class. I studied all of the time even like I was on the track team I lived in Girls Track House and we'd we'd have parties there and I would. I might Saturday. We help you lived in there eating literally the well. There was a house on campus that we call the track house. Oh I see oh the track growth lived. I lived in that house in like sometimes you have parties but on Saturday nights if I had a test on like Monday or even Tuesday I sit in my room why there was a party in the house and I study like he'll nerd and I get like I get a very high if not a perfect score on the tests and So I was kind of burnt out from school. I did like a thesis was really obnoxious. I was insufferable. I still am but in a different way and But I what was insufferable about the thesis. Just the fact that I wanted like you didn't have to do a thesis. It just like if you wanted to graduate with high honors. You could do a thesis. You could write a the biggest term paper of your life. Indeed it voluntarily. Oh God what what what. You're not a nerd. Your Dick Yeah really like why. Why did I do that? Sexual Looking back. I'm like what was I. Whatever I'm wearing of you. You know it all worked out but I was really burn out after school. I didn't I didn't want to go to graduate school right away with like I can't take anymore. This study so my friends. The other girls on the track team. A couple of them had gotten jobs on Wall Street and they were like get a job on Wall Street wall of in New York for a couple of years and I had never taken a business class and they were like well. That doesn't matter. Wall Street loves people. That are smart and We'll do any They loved smart athletes because they think athletes will do anything to win. Says a lot about the mentality of Wall Street. Yeah Yeah and I think also athletes are using to use to being used to doing what they're told. Yeah used to having a coach that says this is how you have to live and this is what you have to do and following that routine. Yeah and it's almost military training about it. Yeah Yeah Yeah they will give me tasks then I would just do. I wouldn't even question it. But they i-it's I went in an interviewed and I got a job at bear stearns And I got the job like a couple of weeks before graduation and I started at bear stearns in July. Two thousand seven. You don't remember bear stearns It collapsed in March of two thousand eight. I do remember that it was the first bank to fail It was just the right size to fail. Apparently two biggest just right it was cute. It was a cute snugly size could fail not too big. Yea got bought by J. P. Morgan Is a little fun gossip about the building? The bear stearns was in was originally supposed to be a J. P. Morgan building it Three three eighty three Madison Avenue. But if this building has this hexagon all on top. And it's the chase low if you look at it was originally supposed to be a chase building. But somehow bear stearns got it and then J. P. Morgan bought bear stearns immediately turned it back into J. P. Morgan building. They moved on to bear. Stearns people out it immediately just like no. It's our building. Get Out Yeah I worked at. I work very stirring. It was them before it collapsed. It was like I wore a suit. You know like I was really into this Wall Street life for like a couple months and then I realized I hated it using me up. What what was your title. I can be completely self-sufficient with just those two things so and you know. I think everyone feels lucky right now that they have more than just their immediate family to talk to. Yes yes no. I know it is I honestly. It is kind of Nice to reserve a couple people. That aren't immediate family. Who you trust to be quarantined too. So you can kind of have a slightly larger circle. This quarantine really makes the case for living in compounds. Several different families would also also just. I mean it's kind of a bummer. But like especially being in L. A. When I do go somewhere it's like a it's like you know it's like the fourth of July weekend or something or it's you know emptied out right. Yeah or like you know Yom Kippur or something. It's just there. Nobody's on the road. And and there's there's part of it it's really great in this part that's creepy and scary and weird you know and apparently the air here hasn't been hasn't been this good in like forty years. It's crazy how like clear and beautiful. It is yeah you don't have to worry about. The animals are taking over again which yes yes. Apparently in Thailand. They like elephants are back to crossing the street. I saw a jellyfish in the canals of Venice. Well they can die. I don't care about them troubling thing. I'm sure they have purpose. I keep telling myself and I think that this is not unusual like come on. You know you've you've seen you've sat in front of cops for three hours like you've done that like maybe you should do something a little more productive than three hours of cops but then it's like yeah but there's a lady with an SS tattoo. That just shoved her boyfriend's cocaine in her vagina and she had no idea what it was he just said put this up. Hugh and she went. Okay let's get you a girl like that. Come on no shit. "Seals are cute if I was up. Here otters rape branch. You've got good time you don't have to have a stance on everything you can just like some things. It's okay you can find bad information about everything out there. You can look it up on your phone that was made by a child and you define bad information about every single thing out there but you'll make yourself miserable to woke back to sleep a little pictures of Joe. I'm being like he seems like a fun guy. We look at pictures does seem like a fun way to hate people. We can't wait to have them cancelled and because of that we get mad before we get logical like me. Liking otters could have very easily turned into Michelle Wolf loves rape. I have a fantasy but social media has made every opinion valuable especially if it causes controversy like right now it's tweets and instagram but before that it was blogs and before that it was manifest. I personally love manifestos because you know when someone writes one of them. They're fucking crazy and that's all you're you're dany. Manifesto blogs are write blogs our conversation. No one wanted to hell with you. Even when you're at your computer is like I hope I die. So.

"Put this is good one talk about jokes. I'm your host culture senior editor Jesse David Fox each episode IV a comedian. Come on to listen to one of their bits and discuss how they wrote it and how it fits into what they're trying to do with their comedy this week's guest Michelle Wolf. I A story for me so last summer I produced a charity comedy. Show with Pamela from top chef. I know I it's true We've done to and counting and Michelle. Wolf was scheduled to perform coincidentally right issues about to go on stage. Chris Rock who was not scheduled to perform but was invited by Padma showed up. I asked him if he wanted to go up with a force casualness no. He said he just wanted to watch so while. Michelle was on stage. Chris sat on the backstage steps and just listened periodically. He talked to no one in particular. About how good. Michelle's new material was when she was rapping up he changed his mind and joined her onstage. I mentioned this because this sort of thing isn't a one off for Michelle Comedy Legends Lover. Chris Rock Dave Chapelle Jon Stewart have all handpicked to open their most important shows and I get it last year. New York magazine asked me to pick a comedian. Who will blow up in the twenty twenty and I said Michelle? I don't know what being a big comedian means. But I've done this long enough that I can feel when people have both the drive and ability to destroy the largest audience as possible and Michelle is one of those comedians. She is a force to be reckoned with and boy did the political establishment on both sides of the spectrum. Try to reckon with her absolutely killer two thousand eighteen White House correspondent performance. Where she told you so hard it almost ended the Dang thing she went directly from the dinner to renting her short-lived Netflix. Talk show the break. Whose title was meant to suggest a break from the political comedy that dominates late night however as she admitted she felt compelled to be political after the heat from the dinner when that run ended. Michelle was happy to return to stand up. The she loved most only to be greeted with new fans expecting a different sort of act. The joke talked about this episode which opens her recent Netflix special joke show is her attempt to reckon with this for a new path. Forward where her comedy is defined by who she is and what she says and not the reactions to it. We play the joke a few minutes into the conversation. After first establishing the context in which it was written and performed so here is Michelle Wolf. And I'm here with Michelle. Thank you for being here. Hi thanks for having me I know that the seeds of this joke were planted in two thousand seventeen by thought it'd be useful to establish the context in which the joke and entire special was refined which was coming out of the White House. Correspondents Dinner and your Netflix. Show the break. you've discussed the dinner so much Saying it was just a job. You'RE NECESSARILY POLITICAL COMEDIAN BEFOREHAND. But you were tasked with rain political jokes and you did not trying to appeal to the people in the room but an audience at home and famously. It was a big deal. I actually really liked Sarah. I think she's very resourceful. Like she burns fax and then she uses that ash to create a perfect Smoky Hill. Like maybe she's born with it. Maybe it's live. You went from it immediately into production on the break which you said you're very proud of.

Haven't you could have dinner with three people dead or alive when you've never met. Are they all at the same dinner. Yeah Yeah I get along. Yeah Yeah Queen Elizabeth the first. Or what was that okay. I went to a Renaissance Fair Dr when I was a kid and It was Queen Elizabeth and Mary Queen of Scots. I'm a big National Park Fan. Donate to the national national parks and and Yeah the Grand Canyon Sedona Band. You've been a big fan in Texas actually. Never have What's next would what's what are you working on now? I knew our that. I'm going to tour with really excited about starting when when it really gets going in January I'm going to be doing clubs clubs for the first part of the year to Kinda just try to make it as good as possible and then move onto theaters. Yeah I'll be everywhere growed which is in my favorite thing to do look forward to writing a couple of things and cool. We'll see if you know whatever those take ten years you know commissioner. They can find it on your scrambled. Michelle is a wolf dot com slash tour or my instagram. Michelle is a wolf where my twitter. Michelle Michelle is. I locked all those too early. Well well you are just so fun to talk to you and the specialist so good People check it out. It's called them joke. Show how did you come up with title. I really wanted to people remember that it was a comedy show than it was all jokes because if anyone would get mad at anything anything I could be like I told you it was a joke of can't say I did not nothing in. There's I took seriously I always say don't bring your baggage into my joke. Like a lot of people that will hear something and then they take person on. It's not about you. You know like I mean I do and sometimes to joke about women where I'm like. That's so bad joke. Yeah I know that's not me. Yeah so it doesn't matter jokes show. Well thank.

"How'd you make the transition to stand up? What was your stand up? Well some people at the pet Encouraged me to take a they wanted me to audit this. Stand up class type by Tom. Shillue and They were like. Hey if you'd be like the person who does like the time I'm in gives the light for everyone You can take it for free and I think that was their nice way of saying You you'd be better outstanding than yard Improv. You're more of a timing thing. Yeah and we must have known. You're really clocks. Talk to the second by the way you were here exactly true. Totally accidental but Yeah I just I started doing it and I had so much fun and I was like. Oh I think there's something here I remember very early on Comic Sean. Patton told me If you're not doing stand up every night you're not doing it. And so then I just believed that and I did it every night. I mean like like a nice still do it almost every night. Yeah go the seller almost every night. It's like being in the gym like on the on the weekends. I'll be on the road and you'll do hour-long set on the road and you five shows six shows sometimes Depending on how you sell and you sell uh noticeably different in different parts of the country. Yeah I mean there's I sound pretty evenly and I try to go everywhere. I think there's this idea that like I don't really check twitter that often. I think it was advertising a show for Albany and someone was like. Oh look you've got burns. Oh better the correspondence center that now you have to play Albany. New York Albany Deserved Entertainment Hill. You know like what do you think I should only do it in New York in La me of entertainment. You know. I'm going to Lexington in January and I've been there before and it's a good comedy club and it's just like Oh why why not go to Lexington attract certain Bill Burr. You mentioned bill. Burr is one of the top communities he goes everywhere. Chapelle goes everywhere like everyone. That's really good at this goes everywhere because you need your jokes to work everywhere right when you find stuff. That's universally funny. That's the best great so you don't. I'm having problems like when you wrote for the daily show Seth Meyers. You are okay with other people saying your funny material. I love writing for other people because you get to think in their point of view And kind of just like put a little bit of yours into how they would say it Irate jokes for Seth Still from time to time and I I now do it to a point where I'm just trying to make him laugh or other people in a room laugh because this isn't the best rate jokes. I know you'll never say I like. I like thinking other people's point of view writing for Trevor. You know I wrote for rock for the Oscars and I've done some stuff for other people here in the good when Chris Rock or Seth Meyers wants to say you're joking. Yeah I mean when I got a call from. I'd never met Chris Rock and I got a voicemail from him being like. Hey this is Chris Rock and I was like yeah. It's definitely is like I can do that. Good of an impression. I WanNa talk to you about something. Give me a call back in like I'm hosting the Oscars Handlebars recommended Yale. And he was like. Would you like to write and I was like Yes of course cruising and funny. I just assume Chris Rock is so funny himself that like I forget that he needs writers for stuff like that definitely for stuff like that and now like luckily enough like he's been come like I definitely like a mentor and like I mean. He gives me advice anytime I need it. Like he'll watch stuff and give me notes like he's cool. It's like it's unbelievable. Unbelievable like I can't believe like they're still times when I'm like this is crazy. LIKE THIS IS A. He's a legend. What'd you live? I mean he was on when you were watching. I mean it's it's it's unbelievable in in like I've gone on tour with him like all over Europe together I did we did Wembley and Oto. Holy Shah Yeah. Yeah so you're still an active around. You're still running marathons be- besides the the just mentality that you have that fits with that. Does it what does it do for you when you're done with something like that. Like how do you F- feel when you're done with something like that. I think one of the big reasons why I do it in general is is because you just want to see if you can. Yeah you know. 'cause you're like I I don't I don't know if I and fifty miles before I did. I had no idea if it was possible. And afterwards you're just like. Oh Yeah I'm very capable that's interesting gives you a real sense of like proprietor or restaurants. That just like you're like oh I can do whatever I want anything and not like a crazy way which is like like you so much of ultramarathons. It's not about being that physically fit. I mean you have to be fit but like the longest run the I ever did before the fifty miler was. I think one day I went out for like like twenty two miles and then the next day I did like ten So like that combined weekend was thirty two miles. They're like if you you can do that. You'll be pretty good. The rest is mental. And you find that to be true then once you hit that like when you were doing the fifty mile when you hit that thirty mile mark you like I love. It literally happened at my all thirty two there. I felt okay and then at mile thirty two mile thirty to forty two. I was positive I was going to die like oh the longtime to the hill and the hill had sand on it. Look at the Sandy Hill and I was like these pieces of I was so l.. Angry you running on the Sandy Hill. We're like an and I. I felt terrible. I remember we stopped at one aid station to get like water and some food and and people are running. The aid station had brought their kids and their kids were running around and playing and like the joy of children never made me angrier than in that moment where I was like i. If you don't get your smiling and laughing asses away from me. Swear like angry old guy LaPorte sports. Yeah I was just like oh how can be so free shut up. This is a light fun question. Are you religious do you think about. Yeah you know I go back and forth you know I did not grow religious at all. I'm not really religious. A more like a Meta tater hater which was mostly what he's running running. Yeah you must go into you have to go into some sort of spiritual state but I have some friends in very good friends of mine who are very very religious people that like you know I listen to them talk and I'm like that's not bad Yeah get avoid with that with really no no my degrom Kavak. My mom grew up methodist and then we just never went to anything. I think my oldest oldest brother was baptized. But the other two of us aren't So I was GONNA go to hell in. US Matter Oh so you can kind of say. Yeah what is your most commonly used Emoji when she say. Do the one the hand over the face a lot because I mess. It's up everything in my life but I've been doing a lot of like Yeah Yeah I find it very handy. Yeah it's very. I think I don't know I did this again. If you could so professional athlete if you could be one would be in tracker. Would it be You mentioned field hockey. No I would love to be like Jackie. joyner-kersee Kersee You know she's the best athlete I think. Have athletes are the coolest. Because they do everything did you watch. It's the Olympics. When it's on do you get an watched track all of the time like I seek it out because you have to because it's not just like a normal channel but I've I'm a huge running. I Still Watch. I love the long distance events. I love the steeplechase. Fifteen nine fifteen hundred dozens. But like I like the sprints too I love every event event no event is bad I really the eight hundred fifteen hundred five thousand ten thousand. I really liked certain. ESPN yet to find him on. Like sometimes TMZ it's like NBC Sports Network Sports Gold Olympic Channel Back up cable but yeah and I I follow the There's this one track cup. Call the Baron Track Club. They're out in Oregon and I've become like a big fan girl them. They've got some some amazing Distance runners and They're just like I love watching them compete. It's so cool and now follow all of them like you know I'll watch like NCW stuff. And then I seen some of them might go from stand out college people to professionals. In like a Groupie I'm a Groupie mccracken groupie. If you have snack food for the rest of your life what would it be. It's such a white woman thing. I probably have pirate's it's bootie. I love to eat snacks though than meals. I'm a snacker love like I mean. Give give me some meat and cheese. Give me some olive. You know like I love to pick on the oysters all day. Yeah Yeah Yeah your standard snack. That grows Peres. Fortunately there are two sponsors. We're.

"I love old stuff the colonial which is a weird nerd. Look at the drummers. Yeah Yeah and they also add kinesiology. What I wanted to major in the offered offered me visit and I went and that's where I ended up. I didn't know you could major in that. What got you interested in that? I really wanted to to do I was. I couldn't figure out what I wanted to do. And it's so weird to ask a seventeen year old like what he wanted to do. The rest of your life but I Love Sports but I was realistic. Realistic and new track was like a lot of money and track. I saw so much track and You know me jumping five. Six high jump was really going to get all the money it but I wanted to work with athletes and I googled a bunch of stuff and I found kinesiology which was like. Oh that's exactly what I WANNA do and to study at how the body moves. Yeah and how. Everything's connected to interesting but I took an anatomy class where I dissect it a human whole my God. What was that like crazy and beautiful and also the smell of formaldehyde? To this day makes me picture the body. The body was it's did you see the face of the body faces covered and then we dissected the face And you have to cut into the fate. Yeah they they the the professor would open the skull but like you open this call. Yeah the brain we have both a man and a woman we dissect it actually. I was the one who cut the penis. But like lengthwise this way Very comfortable the split open does it. Do you have a hard time now. With sausages and hot dogs. The professor might agree professor at for Anatomy but he would come in with like a sandwich and he'd been dissecting body for so many decades that he would just be eating casual like while we were dissecting in But yeah I mean it was really cool. There's like there's some tendons is in the body that are just like they're beautiful. They're like this pearly white. It's like you can't even believe. Some of the muscles are like Sartorius. It just goes across your thigh so you cannot visualize when you're even looking at somebody now you can. You can visualize. It's kind of like if you go to the bodies which I've never done but Yeah I mean I got to do that I got I took exercise size. Physiology classes motor control. I worked at a lab was a cardiovascular physiology too so this whole time do you have emissions to are there do. Do you still harbor like ambitions to go into Showbiz or is it still a thing that you're like people don't actually do this. I was like people. Don't do this. I I was obsessed with school like I had to get like the best grade in the class. Like I did an honors thesis. which you don't have to do but if you do you can graduate with honors which is just a dumb way to spend your senior year wondering what were your your brothers that? I'm an insufferable overachiever. Who I think I mean if you really want to get down to the nitty gritty? I think that if I you know Find Love in doing doing well. I'll be good enough. If I get the best grades in every class is like you know that kind of stuff you know that will make me feel good that yeah exactly and now I just get it from audiences and I. It's interesting that you brother's don't have eh because y'all group in the same environment. Whatever that came from it probably happened to them in some? Yeah I think I was just I mean the one thing me and my brothers all having communist and as we all run alternate marathons really is it must have something to do with how we were brought up just the back. You're like Yeah Gal do this seemingly impossible feat when you finish ultramarathons that do you have this sense of accomplishment. Are you filled with a sense of self worth. I filled with a sense of. I have to get the shoes on our Bathrooms AH yeah. I'd love some food like salty. ULTRAMARATHONS FIF- fifty miles anything above marathon. So they have fifty fifty miles house hundred K.. Hundred Mile my brother just did one hundred miler from that starts in flagstaff and ends at the Grand Canyon and oh I paced haste him for the last twenty miles of it My other brother pays him for the middle. Like twenty six or the I guess. The third Three fourths of it. Whatever that means you're just run a long run with them and Given courage man yeah just like I mean we were under at time mm crunch so I was like I was like I was like listen. There's no way we're stopping because there's we have to finish like there's there's no other way out of this you can just forget about stopping and I'm going to go the pace. We have to go to finish so you have to stay close to me. We why. Why is that because there's a cutoff time If if you don't finish in a certain amount of time you have to stop running they'll give you a did not finish DNA l.. Even if let's say they do give. You did not finish but you know that you ended ended up finishing it says it on the paper. Y No paper that you didn't. It's that mentality. Did your parents thing about grades or like my parents could not have been more lackadaisical about my education. That's so weird like I. I remember there was a time I wanted to do in for freshman year. You could either do earth sciences or biology. Biology was kind of the more advanced one and I wanted to do you that my mom was like I don't know if you should and I was like I was like i WanNa do it. She's like maybe not put so much pressure on yourself so it was all self induced interesting interesting. Yeah I mean I was a hijacker jumps to tell you everything you need to know about my personality and high jump you jump until you miss it so even if you chump your very best they still raise it and then you leave on a failure. Oh my God it's like your best is still not good enough. So did you then have to go into medicine as you're doing all this what I really wanted to do is I want to get either GonNa Medicine or get my PhD in exercise physiology and and like be one of those researchers who does tests on athletes Like we'll get like a gatorade institute or something along those lines were at had an investment bank after that. Yeah so I got a little burnt out in school and I needed to take I was like I can't go right back into school. So yeah for a while. I was googling if I could pair somewhere like me maybe I'll live in France and via nanny and I knew I needed to make money like I didn't I didn't. I was at the time in Virginia and I was like these student. LOANS ARE GONNA. I'M GONNA have to start paying these real soon and I have no money I need. I need to make money and my a lot of the girls I live with who are also on the track team. They were like well. We got jobs on Wall Street. You should get one too. And we'll all live in New York Eric for a while and they were business majors and I was like wow. I've never taken a business class. And they were like no no. They don't care as long as you got good grades. And they love of athletes because athletes will do anything to win with riven. Yeah Oh my God that's so that's interesting so I had good grades. I got an interview. Bear your stearns and They called me like twenty minutes later while I was still in New York. This is the third time I've ever been to New York and I'm like wandering wandering around the city and they called me and they offered me the job right out of college. Yeah I was like five. It was like a week before graduation. Will you must. Yeah I mean in terms of like that Athlete mentality. You must have totally fit the psychological mold Yeah Yeah so okay. So then from bear stearns J.. AP Morgan more wet. Wendy then when do you make a leap to U. C. B. Improv classes. What what's compels you to do that? So I got a my friends in high school came to visit me In the winter of two thousand eight probably late February. So and We went to taping a vest and now We stood in line to get standby tickets for the rehearsal. And I I was watching. It was like how did these people get here like there has to be a thing you do so I googled a little to all of them. And the almost all started an Improv. Except for Fred I think he was in a band which makes a hundred lawyers But they also an Improv. So I just signed up for an impromptu Google Improv NYC and started taking classes at the pit in UC CB at one hundred twenty six. Three the one. Yeah but yeah my first Improv Class I was just like Oh this is fine. I just let's do more of this and then eventually after a couple years turning to stand up. Is there room to be like in the Wall Street world as you're only picture it from like movies where they're like cells. Is there any room in that kind of high pressure world to be funnier to exercise your comedy. I actually had. I was lucky enough to work with some very nice nice people at the bank. It was like one of those things where because I was there. When bear stearns collapsed I started in March of two thousand and eight and it collapsed in March of two thou good timing? It's great another thing I'm interested in But I had bosses that were really for the most part. Really Nice in very supportive like this. My One boss John he would I promoted meet like kept trying to get me to like do more and more stuff and was very supportive. But then he was also very supportive of me doing Improv. Love and then there was crazy people to remember Wall Street Wolves of real hardcore. Yeah it's been trying to get wolf of Wall Street to be my nickname. Ah Yeah there was some crazy bosses there. I remember there was one woman she would come out of her office. First of all she was going through a divorce but was yelling on on her phone about her ex husband all of the time and we all heard everything and then she would start to brag about all the new you sex. She was having with this other guy and she'd be like and the people next door had to complain and like we're all just like she's in her office. Her door is closed and we can all hear it. We're all sitting in a cube farm. You Imagine how loud the sex me of course you can hear neighbor. The funny thing to Brag about loud sex. We.

"As discussed last time I recently met Sarah. Michelle Gellar the vampire slayer you are so proud of you. The Vampire slayer this is buffy the insomnia slayer it is the most comfortable comforted arrive every it is that again. It is the most comfortable comforter I ever used the cloud comforters covered in ultra breathable eucalyptus fabric. That keeps you at the perfect temperature. And that's naturally yes the scam so as you're sleeping you also get a nice. It's true you're you're always right in the middle you're never too hot. Never too cold in the thing and I often em. I've I've noticed I don't know if it's just my internal temperature. Thermometers gotten weird over the last couple of years but sometimes I wake up in like sweaty and I can't regulate the temperature in the open the window and it's too cold. There's is such an easy solution to this problem. The buffy used the cloud comforter. It's soft it's softer than cotton and buffy slaves. All those problems. It's sustainable. It's hypoallergenic. "Slightly and with always is my. It's my at times bragging host but very very rarely I'll break for you. You look really good. You've got a beard and your your hair's all Akimbo. Can here be Akimbo. I've got the I don't Care Luke. Yeah the holidays you have a devil let myself go but at work. You're interpreting as a good thing. I don't care what I look like. But it's like I don't care what I look like. Maybe because I just saw a couple of pictures of hunks on Instagram I was what you know. How every year let me clarify? Let me explain Ryan Reynolds posted a thing. Every year they do like a joke with Hugh Hugh Jackman and Jake gyllenhaal arguably three of the Honky is hung around. Who is the third one? Who's the second one Jack? Huge huge huge Ackman Mall Hawks and they have a thing about Christmas sweater. I'd be people probably know what I'm talking about. I don't really know the INS and outs of it. But I know they post these jokey photos so just looking at photos of those guys and they have that kind of looked like disheveled or they've had so you're saying I fit right in with one saying maybe I know you're saying that maybe thank you. Thank you Why are we talking about hung's we were supposed to be talking about the White House? Oh yeah why are we. Bomb was sort of a honk. Well we've the sort of well. I don't think a traditional hunk. No but if he wasn't I president and so powerful he wouldn't be considered a hung. I bet if you took a poll of women human because you can't separate you can't people can't imagine not knowing him as president now at this point is it sexist to only take hunk poll with women. I think hunks hunks are men right. Yeah female hungry but men can be. Look I'm talking about hung's on we. You acknowledge that gay men would be part of that poll and straight. Yeah that's true. Well remember we were talking to somebody the other day who couldn't acknowledge We were talking about Ryan gosling talking to a straight man about writing and I said you know and they didn't know who it was and I said you know he's really handsome actor and he goes I don't I can tell I can say well. Back Obama all right speaking of still speaking of So why are we talking about the White House talking because our guest today is a comedian. Who I would say rose to? National prominence founded ascended to national prominence when she emceed the White House correspondents dinner a few years ago. That is a humid- headlines. Doing so she did more more so than any every year. The comedian makes some sort of headline meaning they. I think this was a bigger story than I can remember to from any other other. Yeah there was another one but this is years ago. I knew controversial. She said things that people were up in arms about and was talked about about for many weeks after it wasn't just like the next day's new which always happens. This was like this was stuck around for a while. And then you guys get into it. You guys talk about. That's right so I guess as Michelle. Shell will help you know getting there a very funny comedian. Michelle Wolf though. She's you know we could have also talked about gingers that we know Tom Because Michelle's also Known for being a ginger she is but I think to reduce her to that. I know I wouldn't is somewhat unflattering because she is an extremely funny Canadian. Yes I know I for the most part I would say. She is operated behind the scenes. Wouldn't you say yes. She writes a lot of rights for huge. Like she wrote for Chris. Rock Rock and She opened Louis. CK for a long time. That's how I was first introduced. Wrote for daily show to daily show Seth Meyers so she. She writes Zan has written for all the grades. You saw her at Louis. CK Show at Madison Square Garden. Show me yes. That's right saw her. Oh that's right and I remember number being very impressed because often at comedy shows the or music shows or any show the opening act is something you can kind of take. Yeah but I remember thinking. Oh this this person all I want to hear more about the same thing and meeting her. I was struck by how different her presence in the room. And you'll hear it in the interview. She's east her voice is different and I think she talks about this. She does the last name that I have a hard time pronouncing Wolf Wolf. Yeah but we'll get and you hadn't met her so this is your first. She was I have we talked about this. She was exactly on time and we were. We were recording. Who Cares doesn't matter? So she has a new specialized schlatter second special It's out enough flex right now. It's called joker go and I highly recommend it. It's extremely for a really really really fun. So good and it's like hit after. Hit It yeah. It's the first thing. It's the first since that watching her live. It's the first thing that super specialized alight seen or two and since correspondents dinner and I was who cares no matter. Let's get to the show. Let's take someone who does make sure I'm okay. That's a good idea. So without further ADO ADO ADECCO DOA Towa you over over that further. Avoi- this is my conversation with Michelle Wolf Sweetheart Dan. This episode of Life is short is brought brought to you by the simpsons on Disney plus. The Simpsons is one of the longest running and most award winning series in history and you can stream the first thirty seasons of the simpsons and and so much more right now when you subscribe to Disney plus in the US blooming. ooh You stood up in a room full of people powerful people and make jokes at their expense and funny scathing jokes to a room full of like for the most part unreceptive powerful people. You seem like a really normal nice personnel. What did that feel like? What was that like to do that? I mean it was one of the I don't even say cool but it was like one of the it was just like an such an interesting moment because I felt the whole night. I was like I knew what I was doing. And I knew I was like I was like they have no idea what's coming And 'cause even the the woman Margaret who yeah she The we you did a sound check and she was like. Oh what are you wearing tonight. What your gown look like? I'm wearing a suit and she goes. I'm wearing pants to like my little. Stick it to the man and I was like Nick. You have no idea what's about to happen even qualifies as sitting into the man. I I guess we really get that old Victorian man of them but it was really like I Standing there and like I. I knew exactly it was going to happen and I was so excited to do it. And I've never been calmer in my entire life yes sir mm-hmm and like and you know my friend Mark normies another Combo. He's I mean He. He texted me somehow. Gave me the best advice I've ever ever gotten Right before something but he texted me. He goes remember if they're cringing. You're doing wow did you must have felt like you were killing. They were like I've never normally you know as comic audiences they start to like when they get quiet. You start to get a little panic. And as soon as they got quiet I was like sit in What great advice? Whatever what what a great it was perfect one time mark? Norman really comes through the courage that it take to stand up in front of people like that and it was clear that they were not at all open and during the dinner thing like made me so like. Oh Oh this. Is the exact right thing to do. Is The guy who owns CNN. Jeff Zucker that's his name but he stood up and saw Kellyanne conway from across the room and he goes Kellyanne and she comes over and there's just like warm embrace and I was like. Oh I'm like everything anything I'm about to say is one hundred percent. They deserve all of it. Because this is a guy. CNN is like on and on about how bad they are like and then as as soon as he c- Kellyanne. I was like you guys are making so much money together. And you're having a great time but the same corrupt multi while we league like everyone in America is just like being like read this stuff from them Yeah the joke about. CNN was credited you broke it but also again like to go. After and even-handed I would say like you go after Rachel maddow and MSNBC SMBC But like you said all all in the same room together all embracing each other in our feeding people Sometimes misinformation or I. I think there's not really a network right now. That does a good job of providing news hug straight boring. I don't mean boring as the content of the news is boring but like like this when we were growing up. That's what I'm Peter Jennings and Dan Rather in the and it was all kind of delivered in this authoritative but yeah kind of boring during when the opposite of my voice. Well Yeah you make your voice but I actually. I'm now struck meeting you. By how non Abrasive your voice is and I know. That's the thing that you are known for this thing that people recognize about you. And you've you yourself comment on it. But at what point did you begin to play. Okay with your voice In terms of performance it's not intentional on stage. I think I don't know if I'm trying to be louder or like just how it is it. Just that's how it is on state excited to in real life like if some back I'll get like really I I don't know but like yeah if I'm just a normal conversation it isn't that you have a show right now. on Netflix Go joke show It is so oh it's so I found myself really Enjoying the perspective that you had about female topics you talk about getting your period Korea and giving birth and you do it just as a male audience member in a very accessible way in a way that And I wrote down some examples of what what I'm talking about because I'm not really articulate myself proud when you talk about a period for example you said a period should be called bloody tissue falling out of whole and I love that idea that like we have these cutesy terms for it like that time of the month but the idea that it was there. There's something very accessible about The we talk about these things And very truthful logic based do you ever felt like nervous about going too far with with like the White House. Correspondents dinner where you ever worried that L.. Should I'm I'm dismayed. Cross a line there. Couple jokes at the For the correspondent because I also practiced it at the comedy cellar for like a month to whenever it was I started the beginning of that month and I was like all right. So you remember this woman, Michelle wolf, who was the comedian at the correspondents dinner, the White House correspondent sitter who attacked Sarah centers. Now, Miss World was given a show on Netflix, but it was canceled. I think, in a month a month, they canceled their show. Here's what she said at the dinner roll. I actually really liked Sarah. I think he's very resourceful like she burns facts. And then she uses that asks to create a perfect smokey. Like maybe she's born with it. Maybe it's lies. Probably lie. And I really sure what to call Sarah Huckabee Sanders, you know, is it Sarah Sanders? Is it Sarah? Huckabee. Sanders? Is it cousin Huckabee? Is it anti Huckabee? Sanders like what's Tom? "Say very quickly. If you haven't seen Hannah Gatsby a net, Annette flex, go watch it. Go check it out on admit, I put it on a week or so ago, watch the first five or ten minutes and then got caught up with work and wasn't feeling particularly compelled to come back to it just based on that opening. But then I kept reading. People were saying, including our own writers wired, you have to go watch this. You have to watch the so I finished it and to call it a comedy special is a little bit of a mischaracterization because it's not entirely comedy. It really has this amazing nuance and depth to it, and it really reaches this very emotional crescendo where. Gadsby really reveals a lot about some of the traumas it for past and speak openly about some of the basically like socio sort of political issues that we're all dealing with today and social issues really. And and it's just a, it's a, it's a heavy watch, but it's it's good. You should watch it. That's my watch comedians in cars, getting coffee, Jerry Seinfeld thing. I've seen a couple. Billy Joel Wore Star Of David At Concert To Tell Trump 'Nazis Aren't Good People'

Protest what the president said listen are there any particularly memorable moments for you particularly in this residence was the night I where the, star David after the Charlottesville incident? You don't usually get political now I don't think it's right for me to get up on a soapbox because, that's not why people are there but you had to do something I. Had to do, something that night the president said there's some good people. On the Nazis aren't. Good, people it really, enraged me actually my old. Man his family got wiped out they were slaughtered and now switz- him and his. Parents were able to get out but then he was in the US army during. The war Ryan fought with Patten how? Can this shot out by Nazis my feeling is there's a difference between wearing a star of David during a concert which I think is Completely understandable and You can agree or disagree with what was said or not, said in Charlottesville and you can have a quiet protests. In that way he didn't make. A political speech he didn't alienate all the people or half of the people coming to the Madison Square Garden to. Hear him perform so I can defend that that. Is, not abuse, I I mean I don't think it's. On a par maybe we shouldn't have played that because it doesn't really connect with what we. Heard from Comecon what we heard, from comic con what we've heard from people, like Michelle. A weekly show called the break which premieres a net flicks may twenty-seventh Michelle, I wanna play a clip from your recent HBO special nice lady, and this is about not wanting to be married or have a child. I don't want to have a baby or a family. I wanna career. That's what I want. And another. The lot of people out there that are like, but Michelle, you don't have to choose. You can have it all. Women can have it all. Yes, stop saying. You act like all is good. All does not mean good. You've never left an all. You can eat buffet in fairly good about myself. Crabbing putting in sitting really well together. I share him glad I went back for spirit. All is not good, and even if we do try to have it all, even if a woman out there definitely wants it off, we've put up too many obstacles in your way to make it possible. It's like, oh, congratulations, you're having a baby great couple things. We're going to need you to give that car accident of a body back to work as soon as possible because this is America and we don't think you need time to recover. Also you should breastfeed. It's what's best for the baby, but don't do it in public a pig, doing the old janitors closet underneath the bridge with the rest of the breastfeeding trolls and donate the take time off from work. When your kids are sick will think you're not dedicated also. Why are you such a bad mom? By the way, your salary is just enough to cover the cost of childcare. We don't hear exhausted. Let's Michelle will from her recent HBO comedy, special, nice lady. So so I, I think I think you're serious about not wanting to have a baby. It'd be in a relationship to send people think there's something wrong with you when you say that. I mean, yes, but I. You know, I don't know. I'm just different than what people I think want me to be or what one a woman to be in in part of your comedy special. You say, you know, having a baby is the coolest thing your body can do, and so do not have one. It's like me being a bird, but saying, thanks, I'm gonna walk. Did you ever want to like just physically experience, childbirth? Yeah, actually, I, I think that's like I mean, I genuinely think it's like extraordinary. It seems very neat and you know, like I'm a science person, I love science. I was, you know, I was a G major in college. That means this the scientists studying the science of body movement. Yes. Yeah. And I am, you know, I wanted to go and exercise science. I'm fascinated by the human body and what it can do. And I do think there's something really cool about being pregnant and having a baby. I'm just not sure I want the rest of that. You know the the, the lifetime after that part of it. So I wanna play another excerpt of your recent comedy, special on HBO code. Nice lady, and this is the part in what you're talking about Hillary Clinton and you say that you voted for her, but you understand why some people don't like her. And so here you are on your comedy special, get not liking Hillary, but the one thing that I think is completely unforgivable is some people would be like, well, you know it it is. I just can't listen to her. She has such a shrill voice and it's like, well. Your boy. You're a person with a shrill voice, and there's nothing you can do about it. The boy because it's done together outside. I wanted to be shrill that if I suck the helium out of a balloon in wouldn't change my boy at all. That may be one hundred percent. Real thing that happened to me.
