"Do that millions of dollars a day to to have people in these detention camp these detention centers. But we can't make sure that people that are working hard every single day are able to take care of their families. I think that we can do better. Bush that was the day after. The election the day after Alexandria caused Cortez was elected and. And you weren't. But. Those words seem truer today. They don't seem like a conversation that was two years ago. Right, it's still the same the same today and the thing is. Kobe nineteen like could it right in our faces like? I. Let me Tell You I. feel vindication. It's like I've been saying this so long and people weren't ready to hear it or they knew it but they didn't want to accept it. Now we see why that was necessary. In the conversation I just had with Lena Maxwell and Angela Duckworth. We talked about Michelle Obama saying that she's feeling a bit of a low level depression that apparently a lot of, Americans, are feeling Angela Duckworth talked about doing the things you can do about her teenage children going out and organizing to work at polls you have two kids you're a single mother when you get elected to Congress, you'll be the second single mother in Congress these struggles are real for you but your way of dealing with injustice is to is to run for office. Because somebody has to represent that voice. Let me tell you I will get the way that it fell every single time. Now, I received my paycheck and I looked at it and I knew I didn't have anything from it. I was going all over to bills or the Monday before I would get paid I. Knew I was happy on Friday I'm getting paid but I knew I didn't have anything left over and I knew I still wasn't able to put money to the side for my student. Loans and put money you know having money left over to save in case something happened a in. So yeah, I went back to school I tried to better myself went into nursing but then that was still this winter we stopped struggling you know. So that's why I'm running for office because other people go through what I've gone through this fight doesn't have to be this way that we should have. We should be able to have a better quality of life I'm done survive in Saint Louis. Live. How do you feel about the fact that we seem to the Republican cars today in the Senate of Said, they're worried about the debt and other relief plan and what it'll do the debt we have endless money for corporations for loans to keep interest rates low to do all of those things. But for poor working people who for no no fault of their own out of work facing possible fiction facing foreclosure losing the six hundred dollars a week federal benefit. All of a sudden folks are worried about debt. I now I don't understand is you know we're talking about hard working people the same people that were the essential workers that showed up when other people were staying at home the same people that put their lives on the line. The same people we lost people you know, I, I have people that are close to me who track the covid nineteen as essential workers, and then who had their bosses calling them saying, are you done being sick yet you come back to work you know because you don't have paid leave you don't have this. We need you back at work. These are the people that we don't WanNa take care of you know I know what that's like I know that is such. A is such a hard way to live. It's that's why I need to be in Congress to advocate for people. But those people because those people are meet, you know those people are the people next door. You know. We don't have paid leave on a national basis in this country and we don't have universal healthcare something that every other major democracy needs you. Maybe people weren't ready to hear it. Then do you think they're more ready to hear it now? Absolutely you know when we see that you know hundred over one, hundred and fifty. Thousand people died and you know so many people thirty million people right now don't have enough food insecurity. You know when you get hungry let me tell you I've been hungry when you get hungry and you don't know where their next meal is coming from when you don't not only today but you don't know where it's coming from in a week you know that changes, things and people. are seeing right now with so many people being a possibly forty, three million people possibly being evicted coming up soon people are seeing that now we have to make things we have to do things differently what about somebody who's been victim before somebody who's been hungry before somebody who can speak about being low-wage uninsured best meet I can speak about it and I can push forward the thing. Being somebody who's been there I know all the all the holes in the ways the way the system is built and So I'm not I'm not willing to shut up. You know I'm GonNa fight for people who are like me. Good to see you again I'm glad for that pressing conversation that you and I had two years ago because like I said, it feels like we might have had that conversation last week congratulations I look forward to many more conversations with you. Unemployment claims top 1 million for 20th straight week

"Two, million Americans filed for first time. Unemployment benefits is the twentieth straight week where more than a million people have filed for jobless claims. Recent polling shows that sixty nine percent of Americans believe the country is heading in the wrong direction a new report from the Bloomberg Misery Index. That's actually a real thing. It tallies inflation and unemployment outlooks for sixty countries reveals that quote the United States is projected to see the worst reversal of fortune this year in a ranking of global economic misery underscoring just how much havoc the pandemic has wrought America fell twenty five spots from the number fifty spot to the number twenty five spot that puts us behind countries like Russia and Mexico on the economic misery ranking. And yet, Donald Trump seems content to say it'll all go away. Not, pushing Republicans to come to a deal with Democrats to extend enhanced unemployment benefits and the moratorium on indictions. He's blaming problems on in states on governors, pressuring states with spiking cases to reopen their schools and spreading disinformation actual disinformation about the virus including claim about children. That is so dangerous that facebook and twitter both took a down they hardly take anything down. and. Today he twice claimed without evidence at a vaccine. We'll be ready before election day only to be fact checked by Dr. Anthony. FAUCI. We're trying very hard to. "That's bill five g dot com On this Monday, I am thinking about Michelle Obama telling the world she's fighting a quote, low grade depression. Mrs Obama says coded race relations and the Trump Administration are all bringing her down. Now I've met the former first lady a few times. She was very nice to my young daughter and gracious to everyone when I was present, and I do feel her pain on the pandemic and racial strife fronts. Those things are debilitating. No question. But the political angst is confusing to me. I mean, what did Michelle Obama expect when fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton lost the election in 2016? Donald Trump is a hyper capitalist who's corporate tax cut resulted in higher wages for working Americans of all races. President Obama had run the economy as well as President Trump has Hillary Clinton would have won. So I hope Mrs Obama can stop worrying. And be happy. Because politics is always depressing. If you think about it too much. Take it from me. The nation as a huge decision to make in November as the two parties right now are light years apart on just about everything. And the presidential debates will be very important this time around. Now this The average score..

Hollywood's Good Looking Debate

"There is a great Hollywood debate igniting as we speak and we need to talk about it. So it started with this tweet from one of the executive producers of one day at a time asking what male actor is the perfect level of good looking. But also seems fun funny and Goofy twitter collectively seems to think the answer is Paul Rudd. D You guys agree with that? I do. Agree with I. That is like the perfect. He's handsome. He's attractive. He's not intimidatingly attractive. But he's cute and he's also has a lot of personality. So he's just like he's he's Fine look you know what I mean like he's not like the sexiest man alive, but he's got something. Out. Here. Beers. I think he is sexy and especially when he did a man and he was only like chicken breasts, Barroga's leading up to it with all training. Okay. He turned to ninety Zadie looks going on. Who would be your picks? Yes and who did you pick? You know what is going to have to go down a rabbit hole. So follow me here. My pick was Chris Threat back in parks and rec days where he was a goofy and hard. But didn't know he was hot before he got around all hank, we'll see. The hottest NF heiress God is at that time and you know the minute he got hot s. she was like wait what. I didn't sign up for this. This is not what I wanted to go back to the. Keep on eating your Rama noodles like do not get on this diet. So. Unfortunately. The Globe show inevitable like it just happens. No matter what and it's. It's so welcomed by the person that's going through. But the people surrounding it is like I did want this. I chose Zach braff. I don't know. He was the that popped into my mind. Don't you think that makes sense like he's definitely sexy, but not overtly sexy, and he's just he has more of a specific luck. He's not liked so like he's kind of on that call ride. Oh this. Never, thought that he could. Kind Kinda. See when he's in a good suit like right there in the nice tie women minute. We were we supposed to pick someone that wasn't like overtly beautiful, but just like attractive, like has a thing. It's. Assignment I guess. So everyone just. Zach Braff to be employed. That's when he is at his sexiest is when he's consistently employ and that hasn't happened for quite some time. So he's not that sexy anymore. Why? Don't they every time I do see that graph weather that Craig I saw him at the Hollywood bowl, he always had the hottest girl with him.

We were like okay. Alexander Hamilton okay. That's nice cute. It's it's. Always say that Like. I was part of the production team that did the cast album and. Apparently. I missed the email of him pitching it to me. So I told him I found the email after the record and I read the email. and. I told them there's probably I would probably said no I'm fine. I'll sit this one out because looking at this. Concept. I was like. Says the chance of being a little corny right. Yeah, but somehow he warned me through. Absolutely. You you and your husband art true chicagoans. To the bone and probably one of the most touching things that shocked me during your administration. Was the the letter condolences that you sent to Chicago House heads when Frankie knuckles. As the way and always wanted no like as a trueblue Chicago in. Are you a house head like? Have you gone to any house parties to see? Any of the Gods of House Music DJ. Ever, yeah I was. I was old by the time house. Music was like a big thing in Chicago. You know everybody has the Music House music. You know, but by then I was out of clubbing. Out so I never got to experience. The going at the club is being all up in it, but you know you couldn't. You can't be in and out of Chicago without knowing barrels. Right you know what about stepping. Are you a good? Husband good steps. You know I love to step Barack. Is You know he can? He can do it, but you know who loves to step with. ME IS SASHA my youngest. Oh, she! Oh, yeah, yes, she. She gets such a huge kick out of me leaning her through the so that sorta one of the things that we do when we're at a party together or where family event. She's like Ma. Let's debt. Let's step. but you know we never had the time Barack and I. Never had the time to lake. Do the step classes because that's what couples do in Chicago you go you go to Kennedy? King College where you're taking the step, glad. So we never, we never trained INSTEP. Can I say I just sort of? It's Kinda just a box you know and if you've got like a rhythm and you've got the right song, you got a little, you know. A good step in song it just comes but I I grew up watching it on on TV and parents doing it, so it's almost like I can imitate it, but I've taught Sasha had a step and that's. She's my step in part. On I will say that The party that. You guys grant me permission to. Dj. I'll say that. I was holding back for the first. Hour, so because like okay. I'm at the White House. I can't be to look at the house. And oh boy little did I. Know that you all speak the same vocabulary musically so? For, you know how important is it to also embrace because that's the thing I. Just never seen I've never seen like. Parents wholeheartedly. Embraced the music culture of their kids like normally parents, I know. Roll there is up in the air and sh-. Kid, you know that sort of thing. Whereas you. Guys were out partying. Your daughters at you know the the last week of the White House, Party. His jaw dropped like. So I mean, how important is it to you to to bind in also understand like the music. They like ours. They like like you know who chance the rally. Yeah, absolutely I mean I I. When you love music, you love all music and if it's a good song. If it's got a good beat, you know I. Can t tease my kids about how good their favorite artists are compared to the great sal play that game with them, but I can appreciate a good whatever it is, you know and I and I love that time with my daughters. I love to let them teach me about what they love. and against Sasha is my more musical child. She you know she. She's got her room set. Candles lit you. You know colored light bulbs with a certain sound, and it just depends on what her mood is. You walk into her room and she could be playing classical music, or she could be jammed the scissor or you know you always surprised by her taste and that reminds me of the how I grew up. You know my grandfather was a jazz lover, but he respected my mother's music. He respected our music and I think that's just love music. You're open to just something that feels good so there I I love sitting down with Sasha. and just telling her. Tell me what's good. Tell me what you're liking now. Okay, she'll say I just heard you. You'RE GONNA. Love this and she knows my taste. This is a new artists. You're GonNa Love Them I. Think you know she's like I think of you when I think of this artist so in that way they keep me They keep us both on on point I. Don't know all the artists names now. I confused the you know. I just recently realized that what Migos wasn't just one. Year then. I kept saying you know. Let's meet, WHO's. Right right, let's meet him and they're like no mom. That's not just that's group. And then I found out. Okay. Well, then who who are they Yes, I'm not all down with it, but when when I'd like a song, I like halfway. I mean your daughter. Share music with you like you know. Music my parents and that might be grounded for two weeks so. I'm saying. Yes she's like. Don't do that that I try not to be judgmental with the music because it's like. That's how I felt about social media throughout the presidency. The question is if we're GONNA reach kids. We have to understand their language. We have to know what they're hearing. If we want to get young people to vote, we can't get them to vote. Just talking our language, so we had to figure out well. What is twitter and what's Vine? And what are the kids listening to? And if you're busy judging it you? You can't communicate with them so I. Don't want my kids to feel. Shut down because their music isn't what I grew up with So I think it's very important, but you know stuff I, don't like I. Don't like and I will tell them if I think an artist is crap. you know and we'll have debates about it. so I i. think that's a good conversation for families have go okay..

"Favorite. TV Show Oh God I have a lot of favorite. TV shows. I love blackish and Brownish and all the issues I love I love comedy. I started watching Shits Creek on Netflix hilarious. It's kind of the takeoff on like modern day. Take takeoff greenacres for young people. That was a show that was on a long time ago long long time ago. Yeah so I like comedies. I Love Marvelous Mrs Maes now now I like that too. I love TV. I love watching. TV I probably watch too much TV. I would have that. I'm listening to myself. I Mrs Kennedy told a story along time ago. Watching a congress wife sneaking silverware from the in her bag at the White House so I'm wondering if you saw any weird behavior you witnessed it at a White House event. Oh God yeah people you know because people usually are nervous when they come to the White House so if there's a party thirty people usually over drink because they're nervous right because they don't know what to expect but you can see and the drinks at the White House are strong. Aw So we have seen some people fallen out and ways. That and I'm not gonNA mention any names but we've seen some spanks and some Some stuff okay. WHO's fun to sit next to at a state dinner? Stephen Colbert was a fun dinner day. Because he's so cute and charming any smart so he actually knows what's going on so and he'll say things in your ear that are like stop it. We're not supposed to be laughing at this time. So he was. He was a lovely dinner date and I. I don't think he knew that he was going to be sitting next to me. I don't even think he understood why he was invited. So tells the story he's like and then it looked up. He looked at his wife. And he's like I'm sitting next to Michelle Obama and I was don't embarrass me so I like her. What's the last new thing you mastered? The last new thing I mastered mastered. I don't know okay. That's hard the last new thing I master I don't. I'm drawing a blank. Thank here maybe I need to master something. I'm just started yoga and there. Are you like it. I do I do because this is something I need because I'm getting old so I got to be flexible. Touch my most important thing. The older you get the more important is so there are all these crazy. Yoga poses that you know like we with the day before yesterday yesterday and they were trying to have us do something where Chin was on the ground. They kick their legs up and I was like. I'm about to talk to Oprah. I cannot have a bruise Jin that I have explain the people because I'm trying some stupid yoga pose. I was GONNA ask question was what is the last thing that you did that made you feel genuinely old. Aw Oh any conversation with a young person. Here's one disc personal sentiment. I have a Godson who just got his permit and his mother sent me a video of him behind the wheel and dad just trip me out because I was like no one should let that little boy Dr. He's on the road. I mean he was the kind of kid like the girls would go over his house when they were little and they come come back with scratches on their face because he was a wild little boy when he was little and I would come home and it's like Oh you must have been at we. Call them boots. You must have been Bucci House House because your face is all scratched up. He's driving. That made me feel old seeing the young people in my life becoming like this. Yes watching watching them out in the world buying groceries having conversations about lifelike. They know something that makes you know the thing about young people people though. It's like their baby comes out. It's like my children can be all elegant and saying interesting points and then I get a facetime because somebody doesn't know how to get out of there do they cover and I'm like oh you're still a baby because you don't even know how to do laundry right yet. So but that kind of stuff makes me feel I was asking earlier. Julian was out and she was talking about her. Superpower is dance what is yours. I don't have a hard time thinking about it as a superpower but I I hope it's making people feel seen in. I hope that that's my superpower that I make the people that I come in contact back with feel seen and heard especially young people. I hope have that power to make them feel relevant and whole into delivered to them. What I didn't have when that was that when I was that age of of importance and relevance events in the world? I hope. That's my superpower. I hope my superpower is empathy. I'm I try very hard even in these times to understand and what people are going through when they're angry or hateful or when they're doing things that just don't feel right. I tried stand in their shoes. And say way there's got to be something. There's got to be a context that I can understand. That helps me see how you see the world so that I can connect with you on some level and I think that's one thing that's missing in all of us you know just the ability to stand in somebody else's shoes and understand they're paying their hurt. Their fears their loss into see them beyond their anger. I think empathy is your superpower and I'm also wondering like every time we see you I've seen you out since twenty sixteen. You looked like and so. Does Barack Obama like you really discovered what living your best life means. It seems like you all took living your best life to a new level have you. Yeah I mean we're we're happy people but I did you get happy happy. You're Oh yes the White House. Yeah Yeah I mean look. There's it was an honor to serve. I mean it was. It was the biggest privilege of my life to serve as the nation's first lady and I will I will continue to work to try to be a person of service to try to make sure that my life means something to somebody else but those eight years were heart art hard job and it takes a toll so anything after that. It's like they looked really happy. And it's like yeah because it's not. That is not bad so yeah we are happy people. But why wouldn't we be. We have our health off. We have each other. We have a sense of purpose. I mean there are things to complain about. He and I but we the two of us. We don't have anything to complain plane about. That's why we believe we go so much because to whom much is given much is expected so I cannot sit up here and complain about my life. What I'm worried about are the lives of the people who don't have a voice the people who don't have jobs and people who don't have healthcare the there's so many people who are struggling with things? It is a hard thing to me the look at the life. I've been given an complain about anything so I know you don't do resolutions. But we're here serving the commitment contract for a better vision for ourselves. Do you have a vision for twenty twenty and beyond do you see it and for us as a people know for you jello. Mommy Oh for me okay. Good that's easier it for me that the next phase of my journey of becoming is is is really continuing to make sure that what I do has meaning and purpose to somebody outside of myself so my vision is in particular is is to keep helping young people to find and build and support that next generation of leaders to help them understand a broader sense of values. I used that they can operate within because I do think that we are short on that right now that our leaders are not paving a path for what we want our kids to A. B.. I'm sorry to say that I don't want to make this political in any way but I think young people are hungry for something and it's time for them to step step up and to take the lead because we're getting older and we need to move out of the way for them because they're gonNA have answers that we've never thought of so. My the hope is that I want to empower young people. I want to empower the next generation of politicians and community activist teachers and doctors and lawyers. And I WANNA be a part.

"Three sixty I'm colonels and I am sitting on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial I level of Dr Thomas Jefferson's vegetables correct to have the roasted chicken boost very well done editing all about timing I tried to get a little bit away from the actual subject must get sick of your voice right the L. Three sixty could anderson let's start by saying wow again the let me just take a minute that's Michelle Obama last year the National Gallery at the unveiling of the official portraits of her and her husband in the suddenly famous painting of her her skin is gray and she looks very serious a little intense and she's wearing this geometric print dress against a background that solid Robin's egg blue but I'm even more proud of the extraordinary woman artist who made this portrait possible Amy Cheryl Cheryl had been just for artists known as much for getting a heart transplant a few years ago at eight thirty nine ads for her paintings but once that picture became public people suddenly a lot of opinions about any Cheryl and her work many of them complained that the portrait didn't look sufficiently like this smiling electric telegenic Michelle Obama they adore I'll take the criticism because there's no way in the world I can make a painting that made the millions of people that are invested in her emotionally every other time away happy as tough as that must have been Gerald's work is kind of a case study in how to appreciate art in the digital age that is in real life looking at the actual thing I got some emails from people who said they didn't like it and then they went to see an in person and then they emailed me afterwards and said it made me cry and so beautiful I can't you know so it's it's I mean paintings into viewed in person which is exactly what I when we made plans to get together and talk we decided to do that at the house earn worth gallery in New York City Chelsea where she's having a solo show called the heart of the matter the exhibits in a huge white loft space and consists of eight huge portraits of non famous black people so this one which I see is called Hanson is indeed handsome young man looking straight at us as in all of your portraits he's wearing a short sleeve polkadot blue shirt with white pants unflashy optional pose just hanging out just hanging out monochrome what color is that creamy gray yeah it's Nice background Bonilla Gray skin which all of your people have yes lately or in the last decade or so yeah since I found myself really found my artist sick DNA say that yeah so that wasn't until you're thirty something mid to late thirties yeah I guess I'm Ali bloomer so so the the finding your DNA in terms of this straightforward highly representational style and the grey scales skin will all happen at the same time yeah I mean just trying to figure out what kind of art painter what kind of paintings I wanted to make for the rest of my life you know and that's I started thinking about that in college and and went from kind of self portrait like Frida Kahlo Salvador Dali paintings to this but it took me a long time to get there you know does that feel in retrospect or at the time like going from being young being grown up yeah yeah kind of it does yeah let's look at the drive a close group work because of scale and because you started doing things us that aren't just monochrome it's called precious jewels by the see this is there's this guy there's a beach there's a there's a real their people on piggyback yeah it's these there's two paintings in the show that are the largest paintings that I've done this far in my career for one main reason it's just I have a bigger studio now so something I've wanted to do for a long time and just didn't have the space for it and also just had to really consider what it meant for me to move away from the individual paintings are loosely call them portraits into something more with more of a narrative I guess so I deal with that by having I think well I think for the most part my horizon lines are going to be low lower so there's still there's a lot of a lot of blue sky there yeah so it still affects you the same kind of quiet they're not that she might fill in the individual portrait but a lot I do worry that like well this is going to be too likable to cute to something like that now I don't and I guess the main reason that I don't is because you really don't get to see images of African American in these kinds of scenarios historically speaking like within the art Canon and so that was the impetus for me to make the work in the first place was just thinking about you know what kind of work I wanted to make within looking at the work that was being made around me and thinking about what was missing and for me that's what was missing oh the movie big fish was also a huge inspiration is it really got me thinking about those kinds of narratives and convert frivolity Burton yes Tim Burton and so yes they are simple and beautiful and light and I like to call them a resting place and I think that's that's why it's important the idea again of the colors of the clues these people wearing sometimes they're old fashioned sometimes they're modern and bold very but the clothes ones is drawn to the clothes because they're graphic and colorful especially given the the monochrome of most of the backgrounds of the skin in color yeah so are you Hark low this one of your subjects they do put a great amount of got into it I mean because it is like a huge part of the painting because there is nothing else there's not a background they're not standing on a street corner or anything like that so all those things do you take into consideration to make an interesting painting good for you yeah you want to be entertaining I like painting beautiful paintings and oh that's yeah all these decisions that I make aesthetic first and then all the discourse and you know all that other stuff becomes comes afterwards but it's not like I go into the studio thinking about words and wanting to say this with this color do this with bat you know it's just like I see it I think it's cool and I work with it and then you know let the art historians write about it or have your own like Oh look what I was doing yeah a lot of a lot of that for me comes a year or two later will you're you're you're doing not what Tom Wolfe accused artists are doing which is making the painted word don't start with a theory idea here's what I'm going to do to enact my dairy yeah it's backwards and the great the great skin came that way yeah it came because I thought it looked cool and and then in hindsight look back and I I thought you know maybe I was subconsciously struggling with the the work analyzed knowing that I was painting black figures and that that in itself could be turned into a political statement ah wanting to try to steer the conversation to a more universal experience and it's not that the work can't be employed in that way it can be employed in many different ways and mean many different things to different people but I just didn't want it to be sequestered to that one area making a little more generic in some ways or universal interesting have you ever painted a sort of a white person with gray skin now the interesting you know it wouldn't be interesting really yeah because only black people can be have grand skin no I just don't pay people because want because there's millions twice before white people painting white people I mean if you think about how many painter's there were you thinking about art history from cavemen the president you think about the fact that the first black art show was probably in the early nineteen hundreds guys have so that is that is a political act though I knew it is it is it's a reclaiming of time yeah and it's an now I feel like it's my obligation in a good way to because I'm a figurative painter is because I do have that power to assert those narratives that you know into the I can't that were that were there before shall we so did you always think oh I'm going to be painter because you know coming of age did in the nineties right yeah I mean you know painting was yeah for your whole life but did you say no painting my thing yeah for the most part yeah I mean my my parents tried to convince me otherwise for about three or four years about arts in general yeah but are not about the medium oil paint will they didn't even know that was you know it's just like they're just buying stuff that was on a list that my art teacher them for me to buy you know so my parents were born in the nineteen thirties so nothing you late yeah so to become an artist was like what do you mean you want to be an artist it does not hard you're gonNA make money I'm not even sure that they had even been some museums up until that point you know they went to see plays and other stuff but museums weren't this is Georgia yeah even I mean the only my mom has been to a museum because she had to come to see me you know it's not it's not like it was part of their culture growing up I mean I grew up in the south and Mobile Alabama so assist Sinoe obviously they lucky that they weren't lynched near extremely religious PINTA costume literature is not pentecostal it's like don the Nava it's called the worldwide Church of God I'm I think they're still around it was non denomination and also we were kind of Jewish because we kept the Sabbath we we like kept all of the holy days of the Old Testament so David Toma Passover days of eleven fees Tabernacle Yeah it was able to live so there so it's it's not I wouldn't call it fundamentalist religion but it was just strange in the sense of like you couldn't tell birthday he couldn't wear makeup like there was those kinds of things that were a little bit extreme so it wasn't just the normal parental thing saying hey art how are you going to make it was probably that added to it right I mean yeah I mean I think for my parents.

"First of all Michelle Obama tells an amazing story she does she does. She tells a great talk show story. And and she told these stories that were in her book, and she told one story about the day that marriage equality became the law of the land, and they lit up the outside of the White House in rainbow colors, and it was and it was really moving, and it was special and people came out people came out to really celebrate that in front of the White House and Michelle Obama was watching it on TV in the White House. And realized that if she just went outside how she could actually also be there. So you talk about in the book all so the night that gay marriage pass. And this is a great story. Yeah. One of the interesting things, I bring it up to talk about just how a bass different one bay could be in the White House during art ministration and the day that Barack and I went to the funeral where he, you know, famously sang amazing grace we were at that funeral but we flew back in that same day. Marriage equality was passed and. Thing. And we're in the White House. And when you're in the residents there's so much bulletproof glasses. Sometimes you don't hear what's going on outside, and we were having dinner, and we were listening. We knew that there was celebration happening. But we didn't realize that people. Thousands of people were gathering in front of the White House at that time to celebrate. And my staff was calling me everybody was celebrating people were crying. And I thought I want I want to be in that, you know, also we had worked to make sure that the White House was lit up in the LGBT colors. So the lighthouse it was so beautiful beautiful. So we had made that plan. And I was sitting in watching it on TV and realizing I'm living this I said I have to break out of this. I wanna go outside, and I wanna be a part of that celebration. So I had the bright idea I'm going outside. Okay. So I tried to find some partners. So I went to Barack office. And I said we should go outside. He was like they've got too much stuff to do. I can't go out. And he's like, you know, I can't walk outside come on. Let's get out of my office. I go to me said you want go to Sasha. I said you want to come outside with me and see the house, it's colors. Let's celebrate. She's like, no I'm wanting game than women. At went to Molina's room. And I said come on go with me. And she says, okay, I'm down the me and Malia, and we're trying to get out of the White House and realize that it's not that easy to get out of the White House when you're in it, but we were determined. And I said, we're not listening to anyone we are going to walk out that door you and me. So you come out of the residents and there's an elevator and there's usually an agent right there. And when you come out, they whisper, you know, our codenames they're moving and I'm like day, they know we're moving like, let's not take the elevator. Come on you. Go down the stairs. We rushed down the stairs. And you can see the agent thinking. Why are they running? He doesn't quite know what to do. So that he starts following us run faster run faster. We go down the steps, and we go to the front door the north portico door, which faces Pennsylvania Avenue, and I'm just thinking I'm gonna walk out. So we go to the door and the doors locked so now, they're many people behind us the uniform policemen. The usher who's in charge of the house, and they don't know what to do. Right. And they're like a ma'am where are you going? I said I'm going out. I'm going I'm we're going out. We're going outside and they're watching because they're calling in more people. She's trying to get out. She's trying to get. Lead like she's pumped up. She's like we're gonna do this. Mom, you get out with the doors. Locked in the usher says, ma'am. If you walk out there, you will be on camera in front of the nation Nyman ripped up shorts, and you know, a t shirt and no shoes on no makeup. And I thought you have a point. I don't wanna I don't wanna be on that clip looking like this..

Kevin look who already has idea my pitch, I Own own it. it. And she's just smart. She's lady who just understands how it all works. Cool. Couple bet. She's an awesome. Oh, yeah. And the kids are cool from what you can just tell those kids are cool and talking about her daughter's date picking the daughter of story at the prom on the white at the White House. You got to listen to this. So in the book, you talk about malaria going to prom is. I just can't even imagine. Set the state. Yeah. Go ahead. You know, their whole lives were spent trying to have a normal life, go to soccer matches and birthday parties and sleepovers in have kids come over with a security detail. So then prom comes and me. We ask can I please ride with my date in his car. Because at that point they had never driven in another person's car for security reasons, they have two kids could ride in their car, but they couldn't accept a ride from someone else. So everything in their lives is now a discussion we have to pull insecurity, we have to talk the chief of staff talked to the communications director, and we decide my thing was to get a ride in the car with her prom date. You know, I mean, come on people. So she gets to ride. So he comes to pick her up. Poor kid. And. He's got to come through the official driveway that dignitaries. Come when we are. When state visits happen around the the south lawn that long driveway up to the front door of our home, which is like the Dipper room. We're coming down the elevator. Because we're in the elevator me and Baraki in me. And she's like just be cool. Please don't embarrass me. She looked beautiful. I mean, oh it. She just was vision is a vision Brock's. Try not to cry and he's trying to cool and we greet the young men in the nights tux. You know, God knows what happened to him getting in because I tried to make security note. He's coming don't hassle him. I don't believe make sure his car is clean. If you know what I mean because dog sniff the car said, I don't want him to be embarrassed. So I was I said, I don't know to kid, but you know, he'd beats picking up at a different house. I had met him. But I didn't know him. No. So he comes in, and you can tell these a little nervous, and we shake his hand take picture, and they get in the car, and they go off and then like three cars follow. Like them, and then three cars with men with guns and Barabbas like this makes running for a second term, all worthwhile. My daughter is being followed by men with guns. I'm good. There's also a segment on the Michelle Obama show where we put together a tape piece that showed the impact that Michelle Obama has head on this country. It was it was the one thing. We didn't tell Michelle that was happening in the show. So Ellen starts to intro it and Michelle goes, wait. What what's happening? I didn't know about this. And we roll the tape really fun. And it was a beautiful tape is really cool, and you can see that on our show..

Kevin and co Kevin. Kevin. Running it something. Going. I'm almost I'm ready to get to Michelle, Obama speaking. I would like what I would like to say is we all got richer as much as it has been to be together for sixteen years. None of us would be able to do it. We do without our families at home without the people who are really the reason we get up in the morning, and and do what we do. And it's my wife, Julie. And my daughter Sara, and my daughter, Katie, we find a way to make it all work, but it's not always easy because we have to be here a lot. Yes, we do really long hours. I am very very grateful to my family at home. Drains. A lot of our time. I was gonna say an to Ellen. I mean. Our lives have changed because. Yes, we all have so much more as people, and I feel just more fulfilled in sixteen years than I did sixteen years ago, and and materially we obviously all have more. But I think we've all become more charitable because we're around. Well, I think that's right. I mean edged hordes little but speaking for me, become more charity. So I'm a giver. Oh, gosh.
