Google Plans to Expand Its Campus Which Might Become Unsafe

"Google is expanding its campus in the san francisco bay. Area the companies. Planning to build offices as well as housing and greenspace near the shoreline which is at risk from rising sea levels. And that's raising the question of whether building there should happen at all. Npr's lauren summer has the story as a city planner in silicon valley. Michelle king. here's all about one of the biggest headaches in the bay area housing. Oh my goodness housing. Here is extremely expensive. Sunnyvale has very high cost of living in may the median. Home price in sunnyvale. Where king works was one point. Eight million so the city is looking at a different kind of housing higher density. That's walkable transit and greenspace. It would go into a part of town called moffett park right now. It's just offices lots of low rise buildings with wide parking lots one of the most sustainable things you can do is put people where they work and put people where transit is so. This is a huge opportunity. This isn't just sunnyvale vision. It shared by one of the largest landowners. Moffett park google over the last five years. The company has quietly bought more than seventy properties. Here worth almost three billion dollars. Jeff holtzman is google's director of real estate development for sunnyvale. We're incorporating sustainability into everything we do in our developments and we're doing it to support our employees but also the community and hopefully the environment. Sunnyvale is in the process of rezoning the land to allow google to build new offices and housing and just to know. Google is one of npr's financial supporters. And there's one more detail the city is looking at. This land is on the shore of san francisco bay which puts it right in the path of sea level rise sea level rises already happened. I we've seen about a foot over the last hundred years. Christina hill as a professor of environmental planning at uc berkeley. We're standing on the edge of the bay where a high tide is coming in. Hill says sea level rise will make these tides even higher by as much as seven feet by twenty one hundred. But that's not the only problem there's also seawater in the soil under our feet the groundwater and as the c rises that to- of saltwater under the soil is gonna rise also

Bryan Cranston on new TV drama "Your Honor"

"Bryan cranston. The star of amc's breaking bad returns to series television for the first time since that show left. The air in a new showtime miniseries called your honor which begins on sunday. Cranston plays a new orleans. Judge whose life is torn apart after his teenage son gets into some sudden and very serious trouble are tv critic. David be cooley. Has this review bryan. Cranston had played the goofy dad on the fox sitcom malcolm in the middle then. Redefined himself brilliantly as walter white. The meek high school chemistry teacher in breaking bad. What made walter break. Bad was the sudden news that he had contracted terminal cancer leading to a series of increasingly momentous decisions. In the new showtime miniseries. Your honor cranston returns to series tv playing another character who gets some sudden life changing news. This time he plays. Michael desio a compassionate judge in new orleans and a single parent raising his teenage son after the death of his wife a year ago in an unexpected tragedy. On the day of that saturday anniversary the sun adam played by hunter. Doohan experiences an unexpected tragedy of his own after leaving flowers at the convenience store where his mother was an innocent bystander. Shot by robbers has an asthma attack while driving away he searches for his inhaler on the passenger seat and as he takes his eyes off the road he slams into a motorcycle driven by another teenager. Adam after returning home tells his father what happened next. Where did this happen. Okay okay so would be the new hospital. Then the emeralds. Taken to what in new orleans and i don't know well the police must have sex. Overweight drove away before the tried to can give you called nine hundred time to try to at least yes or no please. I could breathe okay. I got you guys. This ten part series begins like the. Hbo mini series the night of following a young man. He descends deeper and deeper into a horrifying spiral of accidents and consequences that engrossing 2016 mini series was created by peter moffett who adapted it from his own british series. Moffitt is the adapter of your honor as well but this time he's not working from his own story showtimes. Your honor is his new version of a twenty seventeen. Israeli drama called ca- votto which has the same basic plot and is available of sample on youtube but for this adaptation for the united states. The location is changed in new orleans and other elements are given an american spin from police brutality. To local criminal activity one thing stays the same though. And it's thing that makes your honor so gripping from the start the father doing the right thing as both a judge and a citizen escorts his son to the police station to turn them in with an explanation but when he gets there he sees the father of the victim and recognizes him as a powerful local mob boss. All of a sudden the judge realizes that to turn his son in would be to signed his death warrant so from that point on. What is the right thing to do. And how many people does he have to enlist or deceive to do it. There's a certain flavor of breaking bad this because we're essentially put in the position of sympathizing with and rooting for a person who's breaking and avoiding the law but that's not a complaint because breaking bad may be the best tv drama series ever made and bryan cranston once again crafts a marvelously nuanced and empathic performance. And in your honor. He's not alone. The executive producers in addition to moffitt in cranston include robert and michelle king the talented creators of the good wife. So both the characters and the legal twists are fully drawn hundred. Doohan as the judge's son has the same relatable acting skills cranston and needs to since he carries most of the show's opening our and other riveting characters and actors abound michael stool barred from. Tv's fargo plays. The mob boss and hope davis plays his wife as very fierce and involved sort of carmela soprano to his tony and while margo martindale from justified in. The americans doesn't show up as the judges mother-in-law until episode four. Wow is she worth the wait. The writers on your honor include moffitt himself and the directors include clark johnson. An actor and director way back on homicide life on the street and edward. Berger who did a marvelous job directing another showtime miniseries patrick metros showtime provided only four of the ten episodes of your honoring advance. Each one. both impressed and surprised me and made me hungry to see the next cranston's michael ziada is smart enough to think on his feet and almost every scene requires him to do just that to avoid exposure endanger and to protect his only son whatever the repercussions to others the series title. Your honor isn't just the judge's work title. it's also at the center of the show. When it comes to your family would you do to save them. And what effect will that have upon your moral code your relationships with others and your honor

"All right a couple of POPs Phil I better now about the training more today even though I do TV podcast. I do like to read although all been telling you about stuff that I haven't read out there and I haven't read everything and this is something else. I haven't read although to be honest when it came out. I wasn't the target audience. Percy Jack Percy Jackson books written by Rick Reardon came out. I think in early two thousands and it's a fantasy series a targeted for young adults teens. Young adults although I have a lot of friends who are in there who all ages. I'll put it that way. All ages who read fantasy so I don't WanNa pitch it all anybody but I'm not that guy so I don't feel bad about telling you I didn't read these books very popular though and I know the Rick Reed and is an excellent writer. A Percy Jackson series is currently in the stages of development at Disney. Plus Rick Reardon. I just mentioned he bathing announcement yesterday. I'm recording this on Friday yesterday in a video on twitter alongside his wife. Becky Rick followed up with a statement which reads in part quote. We can't say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live action series of the highest quality following the story. Line of the original Percy Jackson. Five book series starting with the lightning thief in season. One rest assured that becky and I will be involved in person in every aspect of the show and quote. Why am I bringing this up because at well I'm GonNa say it again? This is original content. Not Find it very interesting that Disney plus not only got rick reardon to license this these stories allow them to produce this series. I'm sure it was quite lucrative but they also gave him what sounds like creative control which is good. It's always good when the author can say. I'm backing this. I'm involved in this and so Disney they're trying to come on with them original content. My my original criticism of them was that they didn't have allowed the original content other than the Mandal Laurean. They are quickly filling that gap. They also released another statement along with it. It was a press release statement from Disney. It says perseus. Percy Jackson is the protagonist of Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series. As the series begins Percy discovers that he is in fact a Demi God the son of a human mother in the Greek God. Poseidon so talk about some good genes. Percy seems like he was born well on third base in addition to the lightning thief. The series is comprised of the books the Sea of monsters. The Titans Kerr's the battle of the labyrinth. In the last lesbian reardon has also published a companion book the demi-god files as well as the Demi God diaries so it sounds like Disney has a lot of material to work from the seems like a really good investment. If it's popular which probably will be. I will be interested to see how they handle this one because HBO is set the Bar High for prestige well produced television and this seems like the type of material that could be really done. Well now they may not have to go to game of thrones length but Disney does have the capital. They do have the special effects. Were wherewithal to make this something something that I might even watch because I probably wouldn't watch it unless there was some type of spectacular value to it the the plot probably into adult enough for me to want to really you. Divan. Like I did. On game of thrones but if if it's something that's you can't see anywhere else I might do that so Kudos the distance and here's some more breaking news. The good fight it still has some punches left the throw. Cbs All access. Which I said last episode is actually going to be changing. Its name in. Its look within the next. Six months has renewed the drama for season five while also conceding that the currencies in will have to be curtailed to only seven episodes due to shutdowns caused by in nineteen the seventh and now final episode of season four will debut on the service on May twenty eighth season four was originally slated to last ten episodes but the abrupt pandemic related halt in mid March as four show runners Michael Michelle King to rethink their plans quote. It's been weird not to be able to finish. The Four Seasons said the Kings. It left the story in an even more absurd place than usual. So we're thrilled that CBS. All access wants to bring the good fight back for an additional season. And we know what story were planning to tell. It's like getting the answers to the. Sat ahead of time now. I haven't watched one episode of the good fight and I never even watched the good wife which the good fight was a spin off of. But they describe it here so. I'm GonNa let you all know what to expect in season four because season four of the good fight finds the central law firm Riddick Bozeman and Lockhart navigating a very different landscape after they lost their biggest client CHOGM. I've no idea what does and their founding partners name was. Cornish riddick. Bozeman Lockhart was forced to accept an offer by a huge multinational law firm S. T. R. Laurie to become a small subsidiary. Say That fast. Suddenly all their decisions can be second guessed by the giant firm that is literally on top of Them O. S. T. R. Laurie initially seemed like benevolent overlords. We Find Diane Lockhart and that's Christine Morand skis character. She's The star of the show and her colleagues chafing at loss of independence while simultaneously investigating the emergence of a mysterious memo six eighteen. Okay I don't know what memos six eighteen says the mysterious but I know people who lawfirms and who were partners in law firms and trust me. Anybody would be upset. Putting in that work to become partner just a subtly be low man on the totem pole again or have to answer to someone. Atop top addition to Baranowski the good fight stars. Cush jumbo now I had looked at because I I don't watch the show and had never heard a cush jumbo and I thought that cush jumbo might be a man first thing and it sounds like the name of a wrestler. Be Quite honest with you. But it's actually a very attractive British actress so I'm not trying to clown her name when you hear Cush Jumbo. That's the first thing that comes to mind in this corner with at three Hundred Fifty Pounds Chris Jumbo also stars Sarah Steele Niambi. Niambi how come on you have to have like a weird name but stares steals Pretty Plain Michael Boatman Plane Jack Zach Greiner. Well that's a fifty fifty. John Larroquette haven't seen him in a while. Audra McDonald brilliant actress and Delroy. Lindo excellent actor Hugh Dancy also join season four and a recurring role while they have a very nice lineup of actors. I like all of them. I like few dancy and Hannibal. Almost any of you watched Hannibal. But that's when you should stream if you can. The good fight remains one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed original series on. Cbs All access. And we've seen a tremendous response from fans this season said jewelry McNamara executive vice president and head of programming at all access while we all had hoped to provide audiences with a ten episode fourth season we among others have had to adapt to the pandemic. Although it's a shortened season the incredible cast and crew helmed by the incomparable Robert and Michelle King have produced a phenomenal seven episode. We can't wait for viewers to see the remainder of the season and are excited to bring subscribers even more of the timely gripping storylines the kings bring to life next in season five. And there. You have the good fight shorten their season. That's the way they adapted to it interesting to see all the way people are adapting to these shutdowns. Some PAT pushing their seasons back splitting them up but they decided to go at a different way. Cbs All access is trying to beef up their lineup. There's some news I'm going to share with you later on the show about another show that they're creating they are trying to beef up that original content everyone is. You cannot be slipping right now because there's way too much competition out there and again. Hbo is like coming on like a great wide Dorsal Fin. Just cresting the water. And you'd better stay in front of it because if not the ripped to smithereens. Cbs All access knows and they seem to be trying to stay ahead of it. So I all props to them. It's interesting to see how this thing is gonNA shake out next. NBC hopes 'free' makes Peacock stand out in streaming era

"Peacock formerly pulled back the curtain on its launch plans with a two hour presentation to investors these presentations becoming so frequent. We had Disney and Apple Apple. TV plus an HBO. Max and peacock is the latest one and then whatever queasy eventually going to probably do. What did you think of the peacock presentation and we can get into some of the actual facts afterwards but sees how it ended about twenty minutes ago? Yeah no definitely becoming accustomed to the rhythms of these presentations which are a little a bit like Circadian Rhythms. Because they put you to sleep very very quickly Yeah it definitely. It is worth noting that these presentations are of course for investors and people of that ilk and not really and truly for people of our real. So it's not supposed to entertain us when they talk about concepts like like our PU. I don't know what are who stands for but I love saying are Pu but yeah they you know they've basically they've they found their various themes and they repeated them ad nauseam and so the key theme that they wanted to go with is Is Free and so free and that was what I was able to take away from. That is that this is going to be free. except I'm probably GONNA end up paying for it. Yeah basically. If you're a comcast subscriber the service is free. It will have ads on it for free. And they made a big point of saying that episodes will have a grant of five minutes of advertising per hour per hour which is interesting and if you're a comcast subscriber and you

Can pop culture fight climate change?

"There's no question climate change is real. Even if one in ten Americans doesn't yet believe that so what what role can Hollywood play addressing climate change and offering potential solutions with us now is elaine low. She's reporter with variety who recently wrote wrote about this topic. Elaine welcome to the show. Thanks for having me John so it doesn't feel like climate. Change is a neglected topic in Hollywood from documentaries. Docu series to narrative narrative stories. Can you talk about some of the most recent examples. We've seen climate change touched on. I think more indirectly than directly in ways you may not even think about like for example the last avengers movie or the second last avengers movie avengers Infinity War you know people don't think of that as a climate change deep but then wipes out half of the population sort of a Nico terrorist moved try to wipe out half the population in an effort to save the health of the universe so we see it trickle in in ways like that you know less so indirect ways. I think the last time we saw a more direct addressing zing of climate changes of movies like the day after tomorrow which was all the way back from two thousand and four or you know any inconvenient the truth which was not fictional and probably I think the only time we've ever seen climate change address in a nonfiction way that has really brought audiences at theaters. There's also a very popular streaming series called our planet that is up for a primetime. Emmy lead us into a little bit from our planet all across our planet. Crucial connections are being disrupted. The stability that we all life relies upon is being lost what we do in the next twenty years will determine the future for all life on earth. Uh there's a quote attributed to Samuel Goldwyn but it actually comes from the Playwright Moss Hart which is if you have a message call Western in union. It feels like documentaries are pretty much on the knows about what climate change means whereas narrative films are trying to figure out how to incorporate that ATM message. Is that something that Hollywood is struggling with now because it doesn't probably WanNa make narrative films that feel too preachy. There's certainly an element meant to wanting to go to the theater and be thrilled right and are you going to be thrilled by listening to a lecture on the climate crisis or you're going to be thrilled. I I see a fifty foot soon. NAMI overtake Santa Monica Beach and I think that's kind of where you see more disaster movies at the box office and more nonfiction documentaries on the smaller screen. Aura shows like our planet you know I think there's an element there of perhaps perhaps wanting to see what will actually resonate with viewers at the box office in and some people don't necessarily believe in climate crisis at all well you know I I I think there's a risk of dividing your audience there so it feels like narrative films and documentaries can point out how real climate changes but what about solutions and let's start first with what Hollywood is doing. Are you starting to see some green practices on sets or in production companies. What are the town itself doing. I'm sure there are a lot of different ways that the industry is trying to combat the climate crisis. There are efforts on the corporation level and there are also efforts on production reduction level. I mean I was talking to Michelle King. One of the CO creators of evil she and Robert King also created the good wife in the good fight and on their set you they have won a production assistant. That's dedicated exclusively to echo training and will make sure that things are composed. It'd and that biodegradable utensils are used and that when all said and done and the set is wrapped that they will donate any decorations and furniture that they have have leftover two organizations like habitat for humanity in an effort to reuse those things so yeah. There's there's definitely an effort in pockets of the community and I think it's more just about seeing more institutional change at this point. Is it fair to say that network television is maybe taking a little bit more of an aggressive approach right right now. Programming wise sure you look at our planet on Netflix where you have a walrus throwing itself off a cliff. I mean five ten years ago. Would you have had David attenborough narrating seen like that you know about this walrus trying to fight for its own survival because of the terrible impacts of climate crisis you also have shows like you know a climate reckoning in the heartland which is a CBS original. It's a documentary on the impact of climate change on farming in Nebraska you have Leonardo DiCaprio's documentary documentary on. HBO This year is on fire trying to find you know never before seen solutions to the climate crisis so I think on TV in particular learn more so than on the big screen. You're you're seeing an effort there to document this crisis to show people really the ramifications of our behavior as a society society and how we're impacting the world around us the last question there's obviously a moral argument to address climate change and there's been a lot of debate about the financial financial argument about addressing climate change in terms of how Hollywood sees it. How are they figuring out why it is good business to go green well you you know when I was talking to Michelle King on evil and the chief procurement officer at CBS I was asking. Is there a financial disincentive to go green and he said You I know maybe ten years ago that would have been the case but we've found now that we can actually go green and make that financially beneficial for us in actually potentially save money in some areas so it's not necessarily an effort that winds up emptying. Hollywood's pockets with going green and making making money can go hand in hand

"An uncanny synchronicity to this character. I watched this. My my eyes welling up in tears as I watched this. It's so of the moment, let's just brilliantly written, but it really puts intelligent liberal minded people who believe in the liberal democratic tradition and society in their country, puts them in a workplace and lets them bump into each other and mix ideas and make intellectual arguments that are complex and not strident. But that this woman, this this Diane character for having fought the good fight all her life being a woman who probably followed Hillary into through Wellesley and championed her and had to you know, knock on the glass ceiling many. And finds herself. At this present moment living in a country where we're backsliding in terms of women's rights. It's it's a marvelous role to play and it's a marvelous show to be on because the writers just kind of take us into the belly of the beast, and let us live in that world and this past. This past season really had especially Diane trying to. With her great rationality for seven years. You saw her on the good fight being the grownup in the room or the rational one or the voice of reason. And to see that character not able to cope to see that woman. I I can't process this. I'm going crazy. I can't turn the TV off. But I feel like I have to bear witness to this. It's a very very interesting to watch. And I said to Michelle king head writer last week. I said, you know, we're going to we're going to have to just go right into this again, given what's happening. And I she said yet, we're you know, that's where we're going to be in season. Three is following the women and the good fight was supposed to be show about Hillary being president. Instead, it was about Trump being president which obviously transform the show. We thought that pilot the days before the days after the election, and then of course, we had to rewrite the the pilot because the. Sumptious was Diane was going to retire because there are no more glass ceilings to break, and she got she gets the house in the south of France. And then she loses her money, but there was a speech at the very beginning where she's talking about, you know, there are no more glass ceilings to break, and it was written as a line thinking that Hillary Clinton would be the president. And so that line was taken out and we had to rewrite the the episode. So now, it seems like Diane got that house in the south of France because she didn't want to state. Every element of it. Just changes context. This seems like a good lead into from civil. Let's go to clip from civil. Sinn pain for everyone at that table. Oh, we haven't had that since just to. Federal my prodigal son is returning just in his coming over thanksgiving. That's wonderful new. He come back. It's been three years simple. Without a word, you a number ninety left..

She was confident and collaborative. But always sure of where she was going. You know, now the women running the show. So what difference? Do you think it makes having a woman in charge? I mean, it's everything I mean, first of all women get shit done. And if you add mom on top of women Amman get shit done. I mean, nothing is worse than some dude. Who doesn't want to go home versus women women wanna get in there. They want to get it done. And they want to go home, and they want to do the other things that they do in life that are equally if not even way more important who have been mentors for you, male or female mentors. Just weird. You learn how to do this. I just collected mentors along. On the way, Michelle king who I worked with on. Good wife gave me this really really great piece of advice that I took into starting the show where she said when you start to do interviews always make sure there's a man in the room. And I thought that was really odd. And she said because if the person comes in to interview with you, and they never look at you. And they only talk to the men in the room, but you're not going to tell you a lot about what the relationship and what it's going to be like going forward. And it was the best piece of advice ever and Lawrence set in on quite a few meetings that I did for the show, and there were a few moments where we saw it and Shannon. I just by melted across the table. Like, okay. This is happening. Right. And it would just look at each other. And it was like, okay. Yeah. And it was just like, okay. You know, polite. My mother's daughter kept dick moving, and then they were gone, and it was like, John. Yeah. Unreal. That it was like, I just sort of collect them if I loved you once I love you always. So even if it's from twenty years ago, you may hear from me, and I'm like, hey, let me take you to lunch because you did this this and this for me, and it's helped me in this way. So awhile moment for me in in. It's a movie moment, but wonder woman, did so well commercially had a female director like it just felt like again as a consumer that was like a wow moment because for so long. I think we've been told women can't carry movies women directors. They shouldn't have the big, budgets, etc. Etc. Played hooky from work one day to go see it, and we were so excited and just watching it. I mean, I just saw at the end. So you want to support something like that? Because it feels weighed in important untimely lake you must but watching it. I was like this is a fucking amazing movie. Like, this isn't a movie just to support because you should write. This is a movie that is at and it was it was just such a wonderful romantic comedy. That felt like it had an amazing message. It was so well written well acted well directed, and it just felt I loved it last year Black Panther came out, and that felt wonderful to see this big superhero movie wonder woman, and then in TV it was the shows that delved into specificity of different worlds that had not been opened before whether that was master of none which I loved Atlanta, which is just brilliant insight. I think that almost everybody have I remember sitting with Lauren and our other partner, Kristen, and we were talking with the line producer for the show. And he asked a question. There was silence. And then I looked up and Kristin and Lauren we're looking at me, and I looked Hymie and I was thinking well who's going to answer it. And lauren. What hand gesture like, it's you when I was like yet is and it was just like this moment of like panic, and then elation so before you were show runners, I know you were both writers as well. Can you talk a little bit about what it was like as a woman may be new show in your case as a woman of color in the writer's room? Well, I started off on a show that was at four female leads call women's murder club. And my first bosses were Liz craft and Sarah Fain who are still really good, friends and mentors. And so it was the perfect entry into this business, frankly, and I went to other rooms that had female show runners when I went to good wife, it was Robert and Michelle king. So I had an experience of having shows that had female leads really strong women in the room. So I didn't have that. Really bumpy entry point, you know, there have been points here, and there where you kind of have to remind people while the the women on the show have a point of view. And we talk about that. Can she not just be the wife wringing her hands at home wondering what her guys out doing? They're out in the big bad world. But I think that it wasn't up for debate in the room. And then I made a decision early on to not go to shows where I thought that that was a problem, and it was a bold choice in a certainly crazy choice. Sometimes when I was broken needed to go on. But if the offer was coming from a place where it was known to not be that friendly or to be combative or just to be an awful room than I turned it down. So I think I entered a little later than most people. So I came to the decision making with a little bit of life's too short. And did you think that's a pretty rare experience that you had? Yes. My agents were furious. Yes. When I said, no to a couple of things with the Sunday afternoon, call which you rarely get and they're like walk me through your thought process. And I was like he's a jerk. I'm not gonna go work for him. I entered the business in my early twenties and definitely had a lot less choice. So I kind of lucked out with a great first experience that was that encompassed everything that a writer's room is, you know, it was fun. It was dark. People laughed people really cried, including me it was..
