Notre Dame fans are going to be up in arms about the way this team has started this season. After last year, making the playoffs. There's no question about it. And this was a team that wasn't expected to take much of a step back, But they had to certainly replace quite a bit specifically at the quarterback position. They had to replace a lot, But this is Florida State. Almost lost of Florida State took it to overtime, and then now Toledo has a chance to beat him. "I've been looking forward to this. Joining me now is my friend Pastor Darrell Scott, author of the book Nothingto Lose Pastor. You said this morning. The GOP is failing. It's something badly when it comes to black voters. Tell me what you're talking about. Well, uh, served that the GOP usually, um, select or back. Candidates that reflect the party. Two. The community. Rather than Select or back candidates. That Um, reflect the voters in the community. And, you know, I got that idea from there was a couple of years ago myself in my business partner, Quinlan, there was sitting down with them. Uh, Republican donors there were very, uh Generous to the party, and we said to them down. This was going into 2020. I think we met them around 2019. Or is it was 17 going into the 18th? We said, Why do you guys always get behind these stuff? Certain Button black candidates that what one like They got a stick up there behind way, said they do not relate to the community. They don't They don't have the connection. They don't relate to the community. The black voters in these areas that you want to talk. They won't support them. And you know what? He said that I found very, very enlightening. He said. But those are the ones that we can relate to. You understand what I mean? He was. He was a very rich, very influential, buttoned up older white guy. This has been a lifelong Republican, he said. Those are the ones we can relate to. It was the black candidate that Um, uh, You know, he went to college and nothing wrong with him. He had a white wife and nothing wrong with that. And you know, he was a stuffed shirt looking kind of corporate looking guy. Got coming than the election. By a guy who was in and of the community that They were running in. And had more of a connection to the man on the street and when he said, maybe said, But those are the ones we relate to. And I think that his statement was reflection of the party as a whole. When you look at the Republican Party in the candidates we get behind. You know when, when it's a black candidate. It has to be a certain height of black candidate. Where's the Democratic Party will get behind candidates that were not only in the community, but we're also up the community. You know, I see a lot of these. These, um Can. It's out here That will say what? You know, I was born in a certain area and I was born in the hood. And I made it out of the hood and I went here and it's one thing to be in the hood. But it's another thing to be up the hood. What you guys came. What is the difference? You have no connection. What is? I'm sorry to interrupt your Patrick. What is what is the difference? Because I look obviously I'm not from the hood. I'm his white is snow. What is the difference between being from it or being of it? Like, what does that mean? All right, let me e Let me make it. Say it this way. When I grew up, I came up and I was out in the streets for a long time until I gave my life to blue and got out of the street. Now there were guys that were in the same neighborhood as I was. And when my friend like in the first grade and second grade, they never did The things that I did. They were never part of that community Street culture. You understand, And so they were in the community. They were in that culture, but they weren't up the culture and so they couldn't connect with the man on the street. These were the guys that they get the right thing, and there's nothing wrong with doing the right thing. But what they did they were raised up to say Hey, Go to school and get out of here and get his fly away from here as you possibly can. And so the one gentleman I'm thinking of in particular here, not we're best friends and Kim dine 1st 2nd grade third grade. But he didn't do the things that I did, in fact, his pants on me, you know, do something. One time I went out and play with me anymore. At least not in front of death. Now, Here's the thing. He went off to college. He actually was a member of Bill Clinton's administration for eight years. After the eight years he was assistant secretary of education under Bill Clinton administration came back to Cleveland Rampant Mayor. No, of course I'm gonna be on this side because he was my friend. Since we were 11. People in Cleveland didn't connect with him. He came back and said, Hey, I did what you guys said. I raised up and I went to school and I went away to college and I became a part of the President's administration. Now I'm back to Michel Mayor and the people of Cleveland with a man. We have to see you around here in the last 15 years. You think you're gonna come back and leave that just because you did that? Just because you made what you consider to be a success. And that's what happens. You have. If you look at the candidates that the Democrats have even let's go look at Georgia. Let's look a flawed candidate like Warner. People in the community knew one that he passed in the church in that community. People in community knew one that one that could point activities that he had in the community that Kelly Lava can point to. Okay, I do now, I do. I understand it very well. And look. There's no ability to Republican Party doesn't even really want the campaign to the black community. And that black vote. The black vote is the sleeping giant that has woke up and it's not going back to sleep. If you don't campaign in that black community. You're not gonna get that black folks. You're not gonna win the election. No, I don't see what you're saying. And there's no ability. There's no ability like relatability and everything in politics and business. "We were just getting done talking about the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and their 31 14 lost to Alabama today in the Rose Bowl. Man on man. Are they gonna bring a Brinks truck to the Devante Smith House house or what? Not Only do they need to bring a Brinks truck, but they probably bring need to bring a hardware store trucks. I think I think he's winning the Heisman on Tuesday. Like that guy is just I'm mean. I didn't watch much of Alabama until maybe a couple weeks ago in the S E C championship game, But watching Devante Smith during that came and then also tonight. That guy. That guy's got himself one heck of the future ahead of him. No doubt about it. And you know you were also mentoring Tyron Williams and what he was able to do tonight. Have a touchdown 64 yards, but you know when they were marching downfield in Tommy tremble got hurt. That was also a massive blow, at least to the offense. Itwas like Tommy tremble. Does everything that off far as being the key, tight end blacker and and being the guy that they can also get out into space. So when he went down was almost like here you go again. At 18 T Stadium, playing in a college football playoff semifinal, just like they did two years ago when they lost Julian Love their pop corner against constant When Julian Love goes out the entire game plan changes When Tommy Trouble goes out. You brought up the massive expectations for Ian Book this year, and that's what they were massive does does he end up living up to those expectations? They look. Justin Fields Ohio State, They look at Trevor Laurence. They look at other quarterbacks Kyle Trask in Florida and say, Why can't even book beam or like quarterback eight year seat? Mac Tone's that Alabama? He's not that type of quarterback and it's it's something where it's okay. If the guy's not going to go, it's not targeted. Have a 10 year NFL career and be a first round NFL draft choice. At the end of the day? You could still be a really good college quarterback. It's for Ian book to do what he had to do at as a quarterback at the University in the rain, probably one of the most, if not the most scrutinized position in college football for him to go 30 and five in his career as a Turner. People are gonna look back next year or a year year after that, in 2021 or 2022 think you know what Notre Dame had a really good when he and focus the quarterback? Well, let's talk about the future because you know you're more in depth and recruiting than most. Where do they go from here? What happens next? At the quarterback position just in general. I think that it will. We'll start the quarterback position. I think what Brian Kelly really need to look hard at is to bring in a graduate transfer. Maybe the kid from Cincinnati. Maybe, like a one year die because Tyler Buckner's the Future like starting quarterback, but he'll be a freshman next year, and he's from California. So if he didn't play high school Football Hall this year take expect. Tyler Buckner's as much as he's heralded and thought of to step right in to become the starting quarterback at the university, right. I think it's a little hard Think to pine is is more of a bad career back up. They've got a look. Maybe outside the box next year at a quarterback then when we talked about earlier, too, they just need to fight still position. Playmakers, guys you can put on the field and feel like you know what If we need to make a play, I can go toe. This guy. That guy or a guy like Michel mayor who's just gonna continue develop a tight end. In a pro across like I can go to different guys to move the ball down the field to not have to rely solely on the Kyron Williams to pick up first downs and touchdown. Did you end up being surprised of how this year went again when we were talking on the Fourth of July? That was just when the Ireland trip was getting canceled, were like you know what the hell is going on? Really mean? That's that's what everybody was thinking. I mean, were you surprised even after Notre Dame had the covert scared too? Are you surprised? We're talking right now about the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day? Yes, you know, like I don't We do. The defense was going to be really good. And we do maybe the offense if they could find some some different playmakers. The offices line, one of arguably one of the top two or three offensive lives in the country. When I was surprised about was after the covert scare, like I don't think there was a team. In the country outside of Alabama. That took this college football season as seriously as Notre Dame like Marine has a scare and father, John Jenkins, the university president. Was this close, just pulling the plug on everything. Sending the student body home, sending the football program home and say We're not going to deal with this. If you guys are going to take it seriously. There was not a program in the country outside of Alabama that took this more seriously and said, You know what if we want to go to the college football playoff? We wanna Max this season out. We've got to follow all the protocols and do all the right things. And basically put ourselves in the bubble for 12 weeks. No rain was able to do that, And that was the result of it like they were in the college football playoff because they took the cove it and all the protocols and everything else that went along with it. Seriously. That's it. We're not gonna let this affect our season. Other than that weak force cancelation, right? Never really did it Didn't. "Nick Saving, who was coaching up until the very last moment, even getting A penalty at the end of the game, showing his wear, making sure his guys weren't gonna let up because he wasn't either. After the game, he cooled down a little bit and talk to their Allison Williams. This was a team victory and you let him start to finish finish what stood out to you about the way your team was able to control this game. Well, you know, I was really proud of our players. They worked hard. You know, we didn't come here to finish here, so I was really proud of the way we came out to play. We didn't finish the game like would like, you know, you'd like to take the air out of it on offense. I've always got something and I'm complaining about, But anyway, it's a great team win. You know, we played well on special teams offense did a good job. Throwing the tempo of the game and defensively we got enough stops toe be able to get off the field when we needed to. So I was a great team win, and these guys have really earned the opportunity to play in the national championship game, so we'll see what we can do with it. You mentioned your defense and Notre Dame presented some different challenges for your team. What was the key to holding them to just 14 points? Well, I think that way played really good team. Defense Way got some stops when we needed to weigh controlled the quarterback as well. As well as you could do it. He's still got out of there a couple times, but we're trying to make him run sideways way Did we had success when he was able to step up didn't have much success. So there's a lot of things that goes into playing winning football on. A lot of guys have to do their job to do it on. One of those guys was romantic. Smith. How do you begin to describe the impact it has on this game? Well, he does a great job. He's a talented guys, a hard worker. I mean, does everything exactly right. He has a great understanding of what he needs to do to be a Make plays, and he makes them every chance again. So we're very fortunate to have him and he's had a great year. Yes, he has. And there is coach Saving referencing is on sportsmanlike conduct once again, just trying to light a fire under a squad even though it was an easy when I want to talk about a couple of things, and I want to start by talking about Mack Jones. This is something that was mentioned during the TV broadcast and something that Joe Andre and Holly were bringing up. You know, this guy wasn't sought after by anybody he'd originally committed to Kentucky at the last minute. A powerhouse SEC program came in swooped him and he chose Alabama. But he knew to a tongue of Milo was there. New Jalen hurts was there He didn't back down. He looked good enough that another tongue of Iowa ended up transferring to his brother. He's a Heisman finalist is well, Devante Smith deserves all the praise he gets. He was outstanding today. But it's the quiet Mack Jones that I believe makes Alabama run like a Mack truck. TRAV your thoughts on Mack Jones, maybe one of the most unheralded, considering he's Alabama's quarterback of maybe savings, Best team ever not getting the shine a lot of his other predecessors have gotten, but he seems to be as important to the tide as any one of the 85. He's not just a game manager. I think a lot of people expected him. Could be a placeholder for bright young this super recruit out of California, But he actually has become a playmaker in his own right and Zubin that I think is not just unexpected. It's a bit shocking for some people, because let's go back to last year in the Iron Bowl against Aubert to untangle Vilo was injured. So in his place is Mac Jones. Back. Jones throws to pick sixes in that game, and I don't think anybody would have imagined that in the wake of that he will come back and become a Heisman finalist. It's not just that he has Devante Smith, and for part of the season, he had jail in water, and he has not yet started about all that stuff helps. But Mack Jones made so many plays where he was being hit in the mouth by a free runner up the middle, and he delivered an accurate past deep down the field to one of those guys covered. That's what playmakers do not game managers do. Mac Jones deserves every bit of praise that he's getting, and anybody who suggests that he's successful because of the guys around him on Lee have half of it right because they're all so successful because of Joe. That's a great point because saving had been hesitant to play freshmen quarterbacks until Jalen hurts, arrived on the scene. He looked great in a lot of people said Hey, Bryce, Young as you mentioned the super recruit. Do the same after especially kind of up and down finish to the season for Jones, But he didn't just grab the job. He put a stranglehold on the job, played his prep football in Jacksonville, Florida wasn't talked about a ton like I said, took a trip. Maybe the Lexington decided the best place was T town, and now they find themselves 60 minutes away from savings. Latest college football playoff National championship. The other quick thing I wanted to mention here is it just has to be asked, And it's so cliche because you know they've shown a couple of defensive lapses.
