Bitcoin's New Governance Challenge

"All right, Friends, well, as it is Bitcoin conference week, I thought why not do an LRS all focused on Bitcoin. So today we have two essays both sort of grounded in the recent feast bikes and both really focused on what happens next and more specifically what sort of additional emphasis on layer twos we might need as a Bitcoin community. The first piece was written by coin desk Michael Casey and is called frogs, fevers and fees, Bitcoin's new governance challenge. Michael Wright's this is why we can't have nice things. Just when we thought we'd learned our lessons from the blow ups of FTX, three arrows capital, Celsius at all, meme coin fever strikes again. Crazy crypto casinos are back. People are making ridiculous gobs of money from tokens based on a frog image, while others stand to lose massively as a rational bidding takes hold. At this time, the fever is not only infecting greedy human minds, but messing with the functioning of the most valuable blockchain in the world. The ability to create tokens based on the new BRC 20 standard, which was enabled by Bitcoin's taproot upgrade, has fostered a variety of new Bitcoin based meme coins, many mimicking those released on other chains that have recently experienced wild price movements. This past week, for example, the Ethereum based Pepe coin rose almost 5 million %, then lost 50% off its highs. This follows the creation of the ordinals protocol, which gave rise to Bitcoin based data inscriptions that function as non fungible tokens. These use up a lot more data than a basic Bitcoin transaction, which means they're driving up Bitcoin fees. Bitcoin miners have lately been earning more from transaction fees than from their routine 6.25 Bitcoin block reward, and that means if you want to send a small amount of Bitcoin on chain, it won't be accepted or you'll have to pay a prohibitively exorbitant price for doing so. I can hear Elizabeth Warren's anti crypto army snickering. These crypto Bros are so obsessed with mooning into lambos, that they're destroying what they claim to be this technology's core purpose as a better form of money and value exchange.

"All right friends back with another long read Sunday. And today we are exploring really the themes that we've been exploring pretty extensively all of this week and pretty much the week before it as well. And so we're going to kick this off with another piece from Michael Casey from coin desk called this crisis will define the future of money. I think the title of the piece is pretty self explanatory, so let's dive in. Michael Wright's ten years ago, a strange new digital currency called Bitcoin caught my attention for the first time as its price surged during the Cyprus banking crisis. Local authorities had infuriated Cypriots by slapping a 10% tax on withdrawals, unwittingly encouraging some to warm to the idea of bankless digital money. I'm not alone in seeing parallels between the past week's events. Again, Bitcoin's prices rallied on speculation that stress among U.S. and European banks will open people's eyes to the leading cryptocurrency censorship resistant, intermediary free qualities. But if this is Bitcoin's cypress moment, the context is very different from 2013, with crypto now embedded in public consciousness, negatively mostly, the industry faces its biggest ever test, one that involves an intensified struggle with the financial establishment. The community now has a narrow opportunity to seize the day and define the future of money. Echoes of 2008, 2009. Recall that the Bitcoin blockchain was born out of the chaos of the 2008 2009 financial crisis, with Satoshi Nakamoto's immortal timestamp on January 3rd, 2009, inscribing a headline from that day's London times. Chancellor on the brink of second bailout for banks. That crisis highlighted how our dependence on banks to run the plumbing of our money and payments leaves the entire economy vulnerable to mismatches and banks investments in liabilities, which can undermine their ability to honor deposits, and it showed how the largest banks whose interwoven credit exposure create systemic risk exploited their too big to fail status. The idea that governments would always bail them out to protect the economy, to place asymmetric high return risky bets. It showed how Wall Street and other financial centers in effect hold our democracy's hostage.

As the fed and federal deposit insurance commission scrambled last weekend to put a funding plan in place so that thousands of startups with deposits at Silicon Valley bank would meet payroll this week, we got a flashback to September 17th, 2008. On that day, two days after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the reserve primary fund, used by companies to manage their cash reserves, quote unquote broke the buck. We fear that failures at similar short term money market funds would lead to widespread chaos in the economy wide system for paying employees in commercial contractors. It's not only the familiarity the striking here. It's also the cause and effect. A direct line can be drawn from SVB failure to the policies introduced in the wake of that prior crisis. In 2009, with a divided U.S. government unable to agree on fiscal solutions to revive growth, the fed launched what would become a multiyear quantitative easing program, delivering a surfeit of dollars that left Silicon Valley's venture funds flush with money that they poured into startups. Those companies deposited the funds at SVB, which in turn made what must have seemed a conservative investment choice at the time. It plowed the cash into long-term U.S. government bonds and mortgage backed securities. The problem was that in January 2022, once the fed finally acknowledged that its easy monetary policies had stoked sustained inflation, it started aggressively hiking rates. This tank the bond market and lumped massive losses on SVB, which had made the fatal error of not hedging its interest rate risk. Now is fear spreads to smaller regional banks, depositors have fled en masse into Wall Street's too big to fail institutions, making them even bigger.

"Of Bloomberg surveillance, Lisa bramwell, and Tom keen York John farrow regrettably off today here is history is made in the United Kingdom. Joining us now, John micklethwait. He's editor in chief of Bloomberg news, and of course a student of this with as many years at The Economist and John, I'm going to go to a single sentence from your colleague and crime. Adrienne wildridge, you've written so many books with Adrian steeped in history. Wald ridge. There are no parallels in British history. What is the Michael Wright parallel this morning? Well, unusual for me to agree with Adrian. But yes, I think he's completely right. There are no parallels and indeed that you begin to have to look to places like Italy and the fast turnover of prime ministers there. And it's one of those moments where basically it's possible to feel quite sorry for Liz truss, but slightly as guy pointed out that everyone else has probably lost even more, the Conservative Party had lost a great deal British people have lost a great deal in terms of much higher mortgage rates. You could even argue that the Labor Party their inheritance if they are eventually going to take over has got immensely more difficult because there is just less room for things. Britain is now we went over the edge. And when you go over the edge with the markets, it takes a long, long time for the markets to forgive you, and you can already see the Tories have rowed back on quite a lot of the more extravagant promises they made. But the market still don't trust them that much as we can see in the yields. So I think in general, yes, it is technically I think she's the life she's the shortest since canning, but by any measure you're not really looking at modern British political history or looking at places which rightly or wrongly are sometimes being perceived with more rapid turnover leaders. You're saying the UK has gone over the edge with markets, which is a pretty dire tone and understandably so because of what we're seeing in markets is a general election enough to begin to restore some of the credibility, some of the stability is Jeremy hunt, a technocrat, the person to do it or is this something that can not be righted for months and potentially years to come. Several things in that number one guy Johnson is completely correct. Nobody in the Conservative Party wants an election because it's like a football match that you're losing 5 nil at halftime. You're generally going to want to play the second half of any to see if you can recover a bit at the moment they would get trounced. And so it would be like turkeys voting for Christmas. So that's really being parked in one area. I think that so it's a less the Conservative Party pulls itself apart so much that some rebels begin to say, look, we'd be better having an election. I don't think that's going to happen. I think in terms of what the markets are going to do and what the way in which Britain is perceived in the world, I think you did see notwithstanding my earlier comments. You did see a fairly robust reaction to Jeremy hunt coming in and taking a more grown-up approach to what things do. What things you do. But as you pointed out now, I was saying earlier, it's very difficult once you've lost that basic trust to get it back. If you look what Johnson what Jeremy hunt did, he actually renounced not just the stuff that the markets really hated the kind of top rate tax cuts and other things like that that took it into much heavier territory. He also renounced a degree of the energy price cap, which the markets had sort of forgiven Britain for earlier. But once you lose that trust, you lose that ability. So the Tories are almost back in an earlier position. So I think it will take a degree of time. And one very interesting thing is that it's very hard for any government now to do much outside of fairly wide parameters. If you look at what labor wants to do, look what the Tories probably will do over the next couple of years. It's probably quite similar. Right now we have a headline. I feel like this is something out of a Hillary mantell novel. The leadership of France saying quote, mister Macron hopes the United Kingdom kingdom can regain stability as soon as possible. Our executive editor in terms of Brexit non stability is David Merritt. He joins us today from Washington here in our special coverage of the resignation of the prime minister David thrilled to have you with us as you are steeped in our coverage of Brexit. How much is this resignation of the prime minister linked to that day when Brexit occurred? Thanks, Tom. Yes, well, a lot of commentators are looking back in history to that moment in 2016 when the chaos really started to set in and we've seen since that vote, David Cameron, of course, resigned the morning after that vote in 2016 and we've had now three other prime ministers forced out of office and it's great to hear that bit of sledging there from the French president talking about the need for stability. But it has been a sort of accelerating process. And Brexit, we all lived and breed, didn't we, Tom? The turmoil, the twists and turns. Boris Johnson claimed that he'd got Brexit done, but obviously the after effects are still being felt. Many commentators talked about the extremities of the moves in UK markets of recent weeks being also linked to the fact that Britain was untethered as it were from the European Union, made it more exposed to some of these effects around inflation and the like that are going round the world. That is one lens on it, of course. The remainer voters still have a large voice in Britain, it would be fascinating to see, though, now who emerges from this leadership contest, are we going to see somebody who wants to start to reforge some connections back with the European Union. If they can actually try to kind of end the in fighting and the Conservative Party Brexit has not gone away, Boris Johnson did not get it done. It remains an open argument in Britain and you're seeing the facts of that still. David, to that exact point, you're asking about who the leadership will be. Well, one just removed his name from the running UK Chancellor Jeremy hunt will not stand for Tory leader that, according to the spokesman from his office, how much are we looking at something that is a UK story, David, and how much is this as we were just hearing from John micklethwait? Does this represent a sea change where a government can not get away with certain policies that they could in the past because of the interest rate regime because of the bond vigilantes coming back? Absolutely. The theory in the trust camp for the campaign was always that Britain has such a large and stable economy that the bond market will readily absorb all this extra debt to pay for they got away with it for the furlough scheme in COVID. They probably would have got away with it with this massive amount of spending to supplement energy bills, but they tipped it over the edge to borrow extra money just to cut taxes. And that

"About our power rankings sorry to derail this? Because our power rankings come out on Mondays. And we vote as a staff, Utah. Sliding, man. Believe the boss. 5 in a row, four in a row now. Two and 8 in their last ten, I believe. Good stuff. They don't have to go bare and they don't have to have a Mitchell. It's not the Utah Jazz. But it's out silly, but it's just going to be the brackets in both conferences going to be interesting. The east, I sent you this text. I don't know if it was last night, but the seating in the east is gonna lead to some really crazy stuff. I mean, those top 6 teams are separated so, so closely. I think there's a two game difference between Brooklyn and a 6 seat right now. Which is wild. Some team is going to end up with the one seed and is going to regret it because they're going to get Brooklyn or Milwaukee in the second round or something insane and be like, you know, how did this happen? Yeah, the seatings are crazy. Real quick, I just want to finish my plane and then touch back on that if you want. So Denver is 28 and 21 and Philly is 30 and 19. So Philadelphia is two up in the lost column. And I just like don't even like when we talk about it again, if Philadelphia finishes first, which is possible, they could. But Denver could also have the same record and be like fourth or third or whatever in the west and so I don't know. I just think it's really dumb. I think which is an easy choice as the MVP and there are a few NBA dot com's official MVP ladder that Michael Wright does an excellent job on. I think yoga is still number one there. So shout out to him and shout out to that placement. But I do just I like this email from Alex because it was addressing something that was on my mind that I actually wanted to talk about and was timely and so wonderful. And I think I hope I didn't spend too much time. No, I think listen about it. We're with you, man. Let me put it this way. And beads not a shoe in for MVP. There's a lot of season left, but we will be we will certainly be pushing the jokic narrative as long as we're hosting this podcast. Always. Unless unless something changes, but for now, I think we both have jokic as our MVP. I know. Marcus smart just playing with glass in his hand. He's like, plus a hundred in the last three games, we'll see what happens tonight. Okay, let's move on to this email from Jonathan, which you'll really love, Rohan, and I also loved it. Jonathan writes, hey Michael, Chris Rohan, and Shelby. Love the pod. My question is, if you take the best player off of each NBA team, who wins the finals and why is it the Miami Heat? From Jonathan, who says PS need more Shelby? I agree, Shelby is the greatest. We all need more Shelby. Shelby doesn't want to be our friend though. So much we can do about it. Okay, so..

"So the volatility of JC Jackson's game that we saw at times last year where there was a lot of boomer bust. It was either a pick 6 and one direction or a touchdown in the other direction. And there was a lot of ups and downs with JC Jackson's game last year. He has really leveled that ship. And now he's just a consistent cover guy. Man zone can still ball hawk, but can still shut it down. I think his attention to detail and to film study has really helped him out. He talked about that earlier this year that it was really trying to lock in on that grind with the film study. I think he's really rounded out his game to now, not just being a pick magnet in a touchdown interception magnet, excuse me, but also being able to shut guys down consistently down to down on top of that. Yeah, so I think we don't have enough information yet to answer this question. And it's going to come down to and here's the thing. I don't think there'll be enough information by the time they have to make the decision. So to me, I think they franchise. I think they franchise them and then. There's a really good year in theirs for corners who maybe you need to give a year or two, right? Josh jobe, Kobe Bryant, Michael Wright. So if you franchise JC Jackson draft one of those guys, then in 2023, and of course, guys can sign extensions, but he projects to be a really strong free agent cornerback cornerback free agent here. So you use the top 60 top 90 pick on a corner this year. You have that guy play behind JC Jackson for a year and then hopefully that guy pans out and then Jackson moves on off the tag and you bring in somebody else, right? Basically what they did, I made this comparison before, but they have Revis in Malcolm butler. And Revis was the clear Revis was clearly a number one in ace corner. Like he wasn't just a number one. He was an ace he was a shutdown corner. Yeah. Now compiler was very good. He was the number one, but he wasn't quite that ace. So what did they do? They moved on from Revis. They strung butler along with team control devices like tags until they had a chance to go get another ace since Stefan Gilmore. And in between,.
