"Show. I welcome Bob Zimmerman here on the surface of the planet earth, and we're going to worry a little bit. Bob is the author of Genesis now available in audio form. That's Apollo eight. The great success of December of nineteen sixty eight. However, he is also the author of universe in a mere the story of Hubble and Hubble needs our attention now because there's trouble Hubble, Bob, a very good evening to you. The trouble on. Hubble is put it into the safe mode. What is the nature of the problem? This is this is the this is probably been nemo systemic problem that Hubble has had since its launch after it was repaired gyroscopes that they use to keep the telescope oriented precisely they have six on the spacecraft. They have had three in reserve for the last few years to try to last they only need three to make sure it's pointing accurately, and so the three three others have been you just put in reserve not running them to try to preserve them to last as long as possible. So the three that will running one failed. And so they said actually, I should correct. Michelle to the six gyros they had four that worked and they had one in reserve to no longer work. So they had three good ones and one in reserve. So the three gyros that will working one failed. And so they decided we'll turn up the backup one. And they turned it on. And it wasn't running properly. And so they turned it off again that leaves just stay humble with only two gyroscopes it. It can do research with even one gyroscope, but it cannot point precisely in the same manner and produce the same kind of shop images can do science. But it can't do the shop images that make famous and so at the moment while they trouble shoot, the gyroscope that they hoped would work. They've put the spacecraft into safe mode to try to preserve all the gyroscopes while they figure out what the issue is. You know, I wrote about Hubbell back. Yeah. In oh eight and at the time, I said, it's the telescope that will not die. I predicted. Then that come the time when they wanted the orbit the the they're going to send up a space of robot attached to it with engines to bring it down. I was predicting. Nope. They'll they'll send up a robot to fix it. Incentive into a hierarchy. It and keep it going. The question is gyroscopes jobs have been the big problem. They've replaced them all several times on shuttle missions. They are moving part that failed with time. And this has been that problem. They might be able to get the telescope functioning for a period of time with one or two gyroscopes. This is kind of similar to what they did with. Kathleen, it sounds like a Kepler replant. Yes, it's very similar, and so they can do some research, but with hobble it's unlike Kepler Kepler was with a very small optical telescope designed to look for a very specific thing. Huddle is a much larger optical telescope designed to as a general observatory for all astronauts do all kinds of research, and it was designed to look at the whole sky up in space. And if if they go to only one or two gyros they're gonna have to limit where it can look and it's going to limit it to its possibilities. And it won't I I'm pretty sure the images will not be shop as they were before. And once again, they can do good science with us. What fuzzy images strongest did that up until Hubble was launched with fuzzy images to the atmosphere, but we could be looking at a loss of of the optical telescope of. Any real note in space, and there is no optical telescope in the works to replace it is point. I I I don't wanna wear anymore. Right. I'm gonna stop worry fresh fresh positive here. Bob will come back to Hubble as we come back to curiosity as we come back to Oppy. These are wonderful little robots, and they need our attention. So we'll come back. We want to go to honoring Apollo eight. They're finally getting around to it. Bob you've influence them. I think Bill Anders more than anybody else in defend influence, and this is the the he was one of the three astronauts on Apollo way back in nineteen sixty eight the first mission to go in orbit around the moon, and as you point out. I wrote a book the first history of that mission. Genesis starve Apollo eight about America's great triumph to win the space race in the sixties. What happened is when when he was in charge of photography. And he was in charge of basically putting together the maps that they would use his guidance navigation guidance as they will coming in around the planet, and he was in a very unique position. He could recommend a lot of names to go on the on their maps to help astronauts of this mission as well as future missions Apollo eleven to figure out where they were and when they should do things. And so he picks three big craters. Just on the other side of the moon as Borman Lovell and Anders. And you know, what's the tradition is the explorers get to name things. Well, the international astronaut Michael union that group of plus shirt, stuffed shirt. I thought on is names they refuse to accept his name's back in the sixties. And so what did he do? He's been fighting them for years to try to get some of the names that he and the other astronauts picked for the Apollo in the Apollo missions. What happened this past weekend? I was at an event in Chicago honoring the three astronauts. They got together who was a big dinner at this museum of science and technology, a fundraiser for them they announced and I posted this on the web page the day before where the picture that they have now named to craters which were in the U during the in the earth famous earthrights picture, the Bill Anders took these two craters are in that image one is they named eight homeward. That's actually an honorable man. But Borman was involved in this negotions. He didn't want to create a named after him. But eight homeward that crater was the one he keyed on when he was navigating and firing engines and the other crater they named was. Anders earth rise. It's the bigger crater in the earth rise image, and that was to honor the earth rise image itself that he took a third a third feature on the moon was officially named mount Maryland, this is a mountain that Jim Lovell pick named it after his wife because it's a mountain that is a key landmark for the Apollo eleven landing, and he named it on his own, and they have finally officially recognized it kind of is corrects the injustice of decades ago where they didn't name things as heat as the astronauts picked the U is power game. And they like to control the names of every boulder in the universe. They don't really have that. Right. And eventually that's going to dissolve away. People in space will use the names that he's astronauts picked without question space exit Vandenberg why Bob what what are they need Vandenberg for? Well, they need to space for today. Vandenberg they'd be more than one to stay sports. But they need Vandenberg right now is because you really cannot do Sola synchronous orbits these orbits around the polls Kennedy because you'd have to fly over populated. Territories. And the west coast spaceport has been used by literally for a half century by the military and private enterprise to get satellites into polar orbit. And so now SpaceX has been flying out of Vandenbroucke for years, but this past weekend, they had their first successful launch from Vandenberg where they landed. The first stage on land at Vandenberg, they'd built a land landing site literally right next to the launchpad literally within sight within fifty four hundred two hundred yards of it. And they brought that that first stage back it was blocked by first stage, which is the first that finally ration- their this is their gold if they get it to land right next to the launch pad. They can turn it around and maybe launch within twenty four hours that's their goal. And so they had. That success? It's part of the you know, the racist. Spacex keeps moving forward. John agrees assigned for the future. Nasa delay S L S. Why do these things seem familiar, Bob? It's an endless story. Well, there's there's a there's an inside story that is not confirmed yet that I want to add to this last year. Congress gave Nassar extra money to fly extra missions of an interim upper stage for S L S, it would not produce as much past Housel of rocket. But it would loud them to fly a few missions. They needed to fly before before they had the final interational out the most powerful upper stage. Well, it appears now they're slowing down development on that that upper stage that final upper stage, and they're putting more money and scheduling WalMart, she's with the interim upper stage, which isn't as powerful, and there's even hints that they're going to discontinue work on that more powerful upper. Stage. This is only after maybe five years of work on that more powerful, upper stage spending lots and lots of money and they've just decided they can't afford to build it. So they'll go with the cheapo small stage. During this. So I in the road put this up on behind the black and they quote, the vice president and program manager of space launch system for Boeing, and he makes this statement. There has been a slow down on the exploration upper stage work, he also said that we underestimated quote, the timeframe involved somewhat. And I call that probably the biggest understatement ever in the universe because SOS has been basically under construction since oh four in some interational another and it's not gonna launch its first manned mission until twenty twenty three. And it won't even be with the most powerful rocket. So we have commercial crew news as well. Bob is this also disappointing. It's disappointing. But it's not as absurd Lhasa this week released. An updated scheduled for the dragon and install lying test flights. These are the cap privately built capsules to bring people to I s and that meant stay sex had to delay. Its first manned test flight until June. The they didn't take the time between the two missions is the same. So it was just because the scheduled essentially at ISS they had a delay and a Boeing schedule pretty much stays the same. So there's been a slight delay. There won't be any commercial crew launches this year. But with that right now, it looks very clear that they're going to all be happening next year. A NASA says we're now going to be giving updates on schedule on a much more frequent basis because we're really firming things up for example, the Boeing flights. They'd give very rough up proximate periods like mid twenty nineteen that now saying clearly the first unmanned two in March twenty nineteen and the first flight manned flight in August twenty nineteen so they really. Framing these schedules up. We should look at SpaceX. I unmanned in January Boeing's first unmanned in March SpaceX I man in June and then bowing manned in August. Every other month is like the Gemini program back in nineteen sixty s it'll be very exciting this year. John fisticuffs set space force headquarters, we have two different directions. Bob, have what are they going to settle this? Is there a tug of war team that's gonna show up and turf war within the bureaucracy? You know, Trump is pushing for a new space force. And so the military bureaucracy is putting forth all kinds of calls about what they should do. I'm not sure either plan is a good one both of the one of them from the agency from the military itself suggests creating an agency that they say is smaller and will be more lean Mike Griffin. Who is forming Nassar administrative who's now been put in there secretary of defense for research, and engineering Mike, and he was basically fit into the space area. It's he's supposed to be there to deal with military space. He's proposing a different idea which would create a new space agency for the military with a staff of one hundred twelve people, and I have to say when reading just initial report, it seemed like he was more bloated than the other. I'm not sure which is right. The one thing that Griffin was doing that the military propose air force. The secretary have had their Wilson L. She's in charge. So Griffin was pushing more the threat to transact- transition the military to using private commercial assets rather than building own and but his apparent love to build his own empire. Here might work against that goal. I'm not sure which works..

"I remind you all that you can travel to lunar orbit with the story of Apollo eight. Genesis by Bob Zimmerman, my guest and colleague Bob Zimmerman wrote this book some time back, but it is now an audio book. So you can listen to the triumph of NASA. Twentieth century NASA as navigated. I think that's the term that we should use for the Mon circumnavigated the moon and read from the bible on Christmas Eve as earth appeared earth rise appeared in the distance. Now, we come to other planets in our solar system in debate in two thousand eighteen and long long time. Now, we've defeated those who wanted to demote Pluto, but they're still at it out there. These people who want to redefine planets baba, very good evening to you. The I what is that. And what power do they have to tell us? What is the planet, and what is not? How much power they have. But they try to exert it to the international astronaut Michael union is an organization of astronomers and scientists planetary researches as well. But mostly astronomers, and you know, I don't know century or call the community decided they've gotta have some kind of organizing organized naming system. So that you know, everybody or names everything their own name. And then you've got multiple names gets very confusing. So the astronomers uses international organization to set up a system, so that the star names and galaxy names, and maybe asteroid names would have a system in some rule, and I use savages that well in this twentieth century, the U decided it really wasn't just simply doing this for strana mors. It was going to do it for the whole world. And it was gonna it was gonna be the people who are going to determine the names of everything. Everything down to the rock boulder. Mini crater. In the entire universe. And they they made a decision at oh six that actually was in rejecting their own committee's recommendations that they were gonna define planets in a way that would exclude Pluto is planet and a lot of planet. I I have not met really almost any planetary. Scientists who likes what they did the key to the definition was that any planet that exists has got to quote, clear its audit of other objects, which is an absurd statement and every planet tracks scratch their head as one comment on behind the black pointed out today that Jupiter's not a planet because this Trojan asteroids within its orbit it doesn't glued. It's all. But really, we've got nearer subjects. This is not a planet designed to get rid of Pluto. And there's reasons why it's complicated. I wanna get into that. What I want to say is though that scientists have not never accepted definition. No one else. Does it excludes exoplanets? You can't call them plan a stupid definition. And there was a paper on a peer reviewed bureau viewed science journal acres just this this end of August that basically slammed the they went through all the astronautical literature, and they could find almost no references to the need a planet clearing. It's audit. They say this fundamentally this is used definition, quote was eroneous literate literature review show that clearing orbit is not a standard that is used for distinguishing asteroids from planet has the claimed. This comes back to the simple fact that this planet period definitions bad, this is not the first pick in the last six months that have stayed the same thing. Planetary strana want to change the definition to something quite simple and practical, which is if a planet if an object is lodge enough to become spherical the gravity forces into shape. It's a plan. This means the mall would be a planet. That's okay. It would mean to you might create a secondary definition to what planets you'd have to decide what the diameters, but that's what they want you. It's just clinical, and it should be dumped. There's no question of that. And the moon as could promoted to a planet would be a good thing. Bob because it's an outlier for the moons of our solar system is very large. And that's actually, right. Hey, look, John there a plan there are moons around Jupiter Saturn that a larger than the traditional planets like mercury larger than that. And tell me. This is the planet. We treated like a planet. We have to and Pluto when it was seen by new horizons clearly a planet. It's got active geology, even though it's so far the son the so little energy there. So, you know, it's it's an excellent. It's again, the definition planet, though, extra planet is a planet. It's gotta be changed tests. What is test? Bob was the launch by a national that new exit planet. Space telescope was essentially designed to do what Kepler has been doing but much better covering much more of the sky, and it was launched this year. And after getting commissioned and set up it has begun its work, and they released this week their first batch of exile planet candidates, they expect to find as many as ten thousand lodge planets, though, its main goal is to find at least fifty world's no more than four times. The size of the earth is I? Set of batches has seventy three objects in it. Lisa candidates. So we should say they say between five and twenty percent will be false alarms, but others might not be. So they'd be confirmations. And this is just going to be taken to be turning turning out these candidates now for the next decade. I would say we the limitation. We've had so far say was Kepler and others is that Kepler was only able to observe the stuff that was close in because it needed more years to study is tests going to give us more years. So that we can get the smaller planets just to make it clear to the audience these they're looking to transients these are things moving across the face of Staw as it orbits the star. And so if it only goes at once every year, you've got to look at least three years to see the transit happening three times to really get a firm. Planetary candidates for something like the earth at an earth orbit. So most of the planet sexual planets that. Keppel found were or inside the over the mercury. They would you know within days or months co by tests have somewhat similar problem. It's looking for transient. So it's the same kind of thing. But you know, it's it's designed to work for a long time. And you know, it's just a matter of time. We just have to give it time to work. And this is you know, I think the design a tests will last longer than Kepler. We go to Jupiter. We have a pro but Jupiter probe doing very well. And now we're studying Jupiter's magnetic field, which Bob you characterize weird. But then again, everything about Jupiter is unusual everything about every object in the solar system is weird. That's what makes me so fascinated with all of this stuff. Juneau was designed not so much to take pretty pictures. They have a camera, but that's not it's focused. It's designed study. Environment of Jupiter as well as it's it's magnetic field its core, its internal workings using a variety of sensors. And so the most recent data from Juno has revealed that Jupiter's magnetic magnetic field actually acts like it has three polls. You know, like a ball magnet. That's kinda split at one end. It's got an office south pole. But it's got another one near the equator. So think of a ball magnet would have a polity Chen. But if you take one of the ends kinda split it. And then bend one of those ends off it you'd have actually to one end. And that's what they've got here today at any of the understanding of exactly why. And anyone gives you a definitive consensus answers. Why we don't really, you know, it has a clearly to do with the size and the gas nature of this class giant. But we don't really understand this. We have it it expresses actually, the the limitations of our knowledge having to do with magnetic field from selves things like the son, Andrew, we don't really understand why they form and how they form structure with compass. Designing accomplished for Jupiter is going to be a challenge. I look focus won't work. Uh-huh. This week of practice, even as we speak. Hi, a booster to is gonna do address rehearsal of its landing on right? Very you grew. It's not gonna land. This is just a dress rehearsal. Maneuvering near the the object, but has a fleet of Kini mini Landers. It's got to that name Minerva. And then it's got it's got three, and they maneuver I'm sorry, and that's another one called mascot and two of maneuver, the two of them maneuvre land for land is going to go down on September twenty first and then the mascot mini. Lander will go in and October third and then in late October is going to try to land and grab it sample sometime later, the third maneuver us land will go down. This is just part of what is going to be an incredibly busy planetary fall season..

"We're going to go right to the phones. That was a really good. Our I thought despite with Jack had to say, Jack, you're always welcome to call the program. I thought those were three really good calls. Obviously, elizabeth. A younger sister did a great job as did Stephen Braintree and Jack and Cape Cod. And Jack again, I understand your passion feel free to keep calling a program. I want to get right to the listeners on the line. The reactions we are gonna talk this hour about Nike's decision to select Colin Kaepernick for their new ad campaign. I'm sure some of you have seen that ad campaign. Many of you at this point. I've heard about it. We will the it used to be Nike used to be the line was just do it. If you remember now with Colin Kaepernick believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything I have a different nominee. That's that. That Nike should have considered. Not Colin Kaepernick a washed up NFL quarterback. But I'd suggest Pat Tillman, and we'll get to that. And we'll continue this conversation with the call us on the line six one seven five four ten thirty triple eight nine two nine ten thirty going down to Virginia Beach, Michael in Virginia Beach, Michael we've had some tough conversations before recently. Let's try to have a good one tonight. Go ahead. Well, I liked what Jack had to say. Your last caller. Here's the problem. We have this sales pitch been given to us for many many years that a legal aliens, our family people. They're they're wonderful. There is good as the best Americans. If not better, unfortunately, they have a much higher Qu'ran rate than Americans. And that tells me that they are being purpose. Fully sent here by a foreign power for the purpose of doing harm to our society, which for which foreign power, do you suspect Michael well, more than one foreign power. And and I'm just curious. I've never heard that theory. I'm curious which ones you you suspect. Well, just Google. Zimmermann telegram by Bogart telegram was discovered by British intelligence in nineteen seventeen which said that it was from tiger will help to that the head of Mexico saying invade invade invade. And I will reward you with four of the five south, western states. You think that it's and I'm just I am not going to argue with you tonight. I just want to give you an opportunity to clarify. You think that Kaiser Wilhelm about one hundred years ago? Urged Mexico to invade the United States either during or at the beginning of World War One. And you feel that that conspiracy continues to this day absolutely never stopped and the region. Woodrow Wilson, changed his mind. He had sworn that. He would not take America into World War One. The reason why was because British intelligence the the forerunners of Christopher Steele allowed our intelligence agencies to find out what was really going on. We won't know what's really going on with Trump, and we won't know what's really going on with Mexico until Michael unions, h is in the White House. Well, it is good to know you're running Michael keep us posted. And we'll certainly will have you on as a candidate. Thank you so much for your call is very illuminating tonight predate the call. Thank you. There was a lovely call six one seven to five hundred thirty triple eight nine two nine ten thirty Norman is in Pennsylvania. Norman, you have a lot. I don't know if you can top that call Norman. Hi, Norman, just like you say that the jets ten trillion percent, right? I saw the lady on Rachel was Tucker Carlson tonight. So I got a chance to see her twice. Oh was she realized that he was a. Real quick before you have a comment, and I'm gonna leave the illegal stuff to someone else on your radio. Did you hear what John Kerry Coulter president yesterday? I have not Agent Orange. I witnessed it on the TV myself. Now, I assume Mr. Kerrey called him Agent, Orange, sir. Again, I didn't hear that. I will accept he did. And I would suspect on Kerry's awkward attempt. That's a fact I didn't dispute it. I could I just make my comment on. I'll be quiet quiet, but just to finish my comment. I would suspect that that is John Kerry who is never ever going to be a standup comic making an effort at an unfortunate effort at a joke. Leaking the color of Donald Trump's here. But that's I assume, but but obviously a labor shortage for words. I know what it was about with McCain. Hey, I moved from silly to Pittsburgh. How did eighteen years ago? Can't get involved in that that was what the discussion was about the funeral. The reason I moved from silly eighteen years ago, it was because of the crime and all the basic people I saw that I didn't really care for not to be a racist or a anti-semites, which I am neither one or the other Jewish people committing a lot of crime in Philadelphia. I don't know. I'm just laying it out that I don't have a problem with either of those parties implicating Jewish. Okay. Who committed the crimes crime in Philadelphia is always going to be there? Hey, there's crime in Pittsburgh now last evening, just for example, just to give you one example, sir. The smash and grabs in the north side where the north shore is the stadium area is rampant. And if the lady will keep that in mind, if Rachel if Rachel seems to think, and this was mentioned with Carlson that she doesn't have a real care about theft and robbery. Now, do you know that the stores in this country us shrinkage percentages for prices, if the shrinkage is very good and low prices are very good. And by shrink is I assume you mean shoplifting. Right. She doesn't think that's a big deal. I got that impression from her. I didn't have a chance to question. But I know that that you're adding that for your audience, sir. She had a number of things, I respect her points. But that was one of the few to be very thoughtful, very intelligent, very reasonable. Obviously. She and I disagreed on a number of issues, but I don't have to insult either guest or phone call. I know that when we disagree. That's what Norman I don't know. How I think you've called before? Sandy six years old. I didn't ask you your age. I said, I think mine I've called you. Yeah. You're a great guy called before. And I you know, what the purpose of this program is the programs to try to be balanced conversations going between people have different viewpoints and different life experiences. That's all. So look, I appreciate your call. And hope you continue to call. Molly would be alive. If it wasn't for Tippett's, mostly, you know, Molly Tibbets is the woman's name. Molly would be alive. If it wasn't for Rivera. If that guy was not in the country. We have other cases styling case Matthew Denise, if you've listened to my show, you know, I agree with you on the case with Jack to I apologize for your loss. Jack, take care, sir. Have a great night. Norman six one seven two five four ten thirty. Triple eight nine thousand nine hundred thirty feel free to continue this conversation. And also at some point I'd like to get some comments on the Nike decision to basically lionize. This quarterback. I don't even know if I want to mention his name, I obviously I will at some point Colin Kaepernick. The slogan. I'm gonna play the slogan for you. Because we we did publicize we're going to do this. This is the the slogan. In. It's a shortened form. A Colin Kaepernick voice believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything that's an NFL quarterback, Colin Kaepernick. He didn't sacrifice much in my opinion. Because I don't think his time in the NFL was was going to be of great along duration. He was on the downhill of his career. But if any of you know, who Pat Tillman was you know, what I'm gonna say the other side of this break because I'm gonna explain to you about an ex NFL player who did believe in something and did sacrifice everything. And if Nike had any. Courage, or if Nike had any integrity. They would be highlighting Pat Tillman much before they would highlight Colin Kaepernick six seven two five four ten thirty triple eight nine two nine ten thirty nightside.

"It was twelve years ago this month that the word pizzas was eliminated. Not in general. Of course you can still use it in conversation or on the phone when you're speaking to a pizza place. But it was struck name. It was ripped from the monarch. We used to use to remember the order of the nine planets in our solar system. My very educated mother just served us nine pizzas that has mercury Venus, earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus Neptune, and Pluto. Poor Pluto, as you know. And as I'm sorry to bring up once again in August of two thousand six, the international astronaut Michael union, redefined planet hood. And Pluto. Poor Pluto did not make the cut. A lot of scientists were angry about it, and apparently they still are judging by the planet. Nine kerfuffle in twenty. Fourteen astronomers suggested a mystery planet was out there beyond Neptune affecting the orbits of some distant small planets, a quote, massive perturb in scientific parlance, and despite its inferred, enormous nece no one has actually found the massive perturb yet that found name for it though planet nine and some scientists are not at all into that in a letter published in the planetary exploration newsletter this week, those scientists argue that I, they're nowhere near convinced that Pluto the former planet nine should have been demoted at all. And second quote, given the incredible accomplishment of the discovery of Pluto by planetary astronomer, CLYDE w, Tom. Ombu in nineteen thirty..
