Scott Spencer: An Ocean Without a Shore
"Guest today is a writer that I wanted to talk to for more than twenty years, and somehow he has slipped through the cracks now. He has a new novel. It is Scott Spencer. The novel is an ocean without a shore. I personally feel it's the book for the time we're living in. Inadvertently, he's written. The book for a person who was suffering the Song Tude of pandemic. Then narrator is a man nicknamed Kip. His real name is Christopher and he discovers. That he has lived his whole life. In Quarantine, can you tell me about the? Yes and Brazil thanks Michael Great to hear Your Voice. KIPNIS Kind of south impose prison because she is in love with his best friend, but he's not out to his best friend out. And he sort of maintains this. Distance. Hoping that something will happen that will. Everything, and that his dream of of of the long unrequited mobile's suddenly be Hinz, and it just goes on and on and on what's he spends a year in the two years, not being open to his friend about his sexuality, it just becomes more and more difficult to get out, and before he knows it decades go by, and he's still in the same situation still waiting, presenting the happen so. Waiting for his life to begin. He suspects. and. I suspect that his suspicion is true. That there are many others like him who never came out of the constant who have lived a life of restraint and lying. Many of the people reading the book, saying Oh. This is not a character for our age. But restraint. Fear desperation. Are qualities that exist in all ages just because there was gay pride doesn't mean that all gay people were able to March fourth, and this is a novel about a person who found himself in the prison of deception. What made you interested? In this extraordinary character, he grew on me. I wanted him to narrate this book because I was really interested in seeing daddy's who'd been a previous look of Minos, interested in seeing him from a different angle and I I thought that that would be kind of you know nick, caraway type of narrator who is they're not there. But. Once! I began writing in his voice. I became more more involved with him. Attached to him, and it really became his story. Not Telling the truth about yourself is something that we all cope with to one degree or another and. It's something that I've personally struggled with not so much in terms of my sexually, but other aspects of me that I don't shame. Shame about didn't WANNA. Do Somehow shift your movers sins such a way that I will be accepted in the world that I lived in. So that sort of section. Interest me, and in also seems to be very very dramatic and I'm also interested in in people who are a little bit left behind by history and Kim's very left behind by his tipples, living in the postal law world, but can't. Be Apart of it. Well. Scott Spencer, I would say that just about every gay person has some point of his trajectory, or another has got to get over. Gov a deep love for a best friend who is not gay. This happens and it happens, and it happens again.

Long term relationships that I've been in and they've been with men. I wouldn't consider myself bisexual because I've dated more than just minimum. Dated a man that her vagina. My Dad caught on pretty quick I think he just felt the energy, and he would like kind of tease me the same way that he would tease my brother's. Girlfriend. It's like restoring magazine woman too hard. You know you'd be like Oh you like her. What do you guys think about Paris? Being so open? Good for her. Go ahead go ahead. I was a positive and I'm going to be the negative Nancy over here. I'm still choking on my water now. I just think like first of all I mean. I haven't watched. Jackson too closely I think she's stunning, first and foremost, but I just feel like this goes with her whole vibe and her whole aura. She's GonNa live whatever truth she's GonNa live, and if it turns out that she wants to be with men and women more than men and women than I feel like she's going to be open about that I don't get a sensor vibe from her at all. Right percent and you know what I do love that she's being open about this because she can influence people to be open more open and more, you know open minded. But I also at the age of thirty two I regret being open. About are so open about my sexuality I wish I could take some of those things back in processing them. Go back and processing and then Kinda. Reveal what they were what they meant to me as an older person. Because I feel like you know when you just let it out that much, and you just let it out. It almost takes away from authenticity that that relationship or that experience was to you. Does that make any sense? I guess so, but then innocence. Sometimes it helps you process when you say things out loud, or when you have these honest conversations with the people who are close to you, and yes, she is saying it for the world to see but yeah, I feel like it kind of just helped her actualize what her truth is. In my opinion on IT I. Go ahead. Go ahead. No I just think people. Her Age ranges well like I think they're in a generation where they want to be as truthful and his open and honest about all of their experience as possible so i. just think it's almost you know that's just kind of what everyone does. When we were younger, it was like Oh. They're looking empowered. Group I wish I was confident when I was that age though their own the guests they are empowered group, but they're also a group of one uppers like Oh you having ninety. I have anxiety and. For my like my personal, whenever I'm trying to come up with my favorite of anything of all time, just like my own little sort of a personal. I limit myself to only things that were released at least five years ago. That way I have some hindsight that I can sort of. You know you're absolutely right. There's recency biases in play for sure and the. Okay, we you. You say Yo exclude things from five years ago. No. It's no. It has to be at least five years old. Probably reflects on your in order for it. For me to consider it one of the best of whatever of all time, yeah, for example I have a playlist that I keep updated of my favorite songs of all time. They're called God tears songs, but I won't allow any song. That's less than five years old on that playlist. Okay I think that makes sense. I think the Oscars actually showed work that way. We'd have some perspective on things at that point. That's a great idea that's your. Of. Tina. Do you notice when we do a game of the year? Stuff that our staffs tends to think about things that just came out especially for music. That's when I really noticed an. Fresh on your mind. Exactly, it's also holiday season right so all these games are out, and it's just like I've never been able to separate that out. At the Santa, then towards the end of the year, we have more time to like finally. Catch up on some game, so it gives people an opportunity to play the stuff early in the year that they had. To not throw. Our whole came on the air system under the bus SAM.

"Tell you as if you needed any more reasons why you should go see. or at least go on the Internet, so you can see. Like grandma. Bomb! My guest today on the podcast is actor Michael Toe and Michael I wanNA. Thank you for getting the ball rolling on this whole episode because you reached out to me, because you just had a film released. That has happened during this whole shutdown called lucky grandma and Let me. Tell you want your hair so bad in this in this movie I described it on rotten tomatoes as like a lopsided meringue on the top of your head, but. I mean everything about what you brought to the role of little Hansel was just so so spot on I. Just want to thank you for allowing us to have this conversation. Thanks well I. APPRECIATE IT and looking forward to speak with you today. Well, so talk a little bit about what lucky grandma is and the challenge of a film coming out. During the shutdown when movie theaters are closed. Sure so lucky is a movie. It's kind of a dark caper. Dark comedy movie that won the at and T. untold stories script competition. It's written by say Sealy in Angela Chang and they submitted for the competition that was kind of like a one of those TV. You know narrowing down teams, and they had the pitch on on video, and that sort of thing, and they end up winning the million dollars. To make with Tribeca, and we premiered at Tribeca in two thousand nineteen last year. We did the we. We went to La and London Macau. All over and we were supposed to have our. Full release this August and this is supposed to be nationwide in theaters, nationwide and of course Kovic happen, and so all those plans were scrapped and we ended up having are. A virtual theatrical release and was that happened. This past weekend may twenty seconds twenty six, so we have we now open. To than to the country so three, so it's been. It's been exciting. Yeah no I know that there were some other films that were supposed to premiere like. The theatrical live version of Moulana right we tighten time on, and that they they just postponed the whole thing. I don't see them releasing adversely, so do you? Do you know what was behind the decision to not still hold on until the theater's are open again. No, but not specifically. There's a lot of different things going on with it, so you know lot. Even that's really that was March SOC- in March and then all of a sudden now now they have you know because they you know this is a worldwide release, so all of a sudden now they have. Their now moved down to the end of July, and so that's it's. It's one of those things where they're holding off on Asia, and Asia opens, and the cold off in the US so with with us I think it was partly that if you know if it was just going to be a US release going to maybe by the. At another to delayed another year you know that that piece of it and We got our distribution and with. With our distributor data opening up. Well we try to do it as a virtual at this virtual release, which is kind of this new new format that that was born because of Covid, and where you, they team up with theaters across the country, and a portion of the proceeds of every ticket bought goes to the theater that you watch it through. And then the other portion goes towards the film, and then another small portion goes towards a charity we've. Doesn't it a Chinatown charity? To to help out, so it's it's been interesting in some ways. I think it actually gets our movie. Out To more people now you know this way, so it's but either either way it's. It's it's been. It's been really exciting. Yeah, now, Tell tell the listeners a little bit about the plot of this movie. You probably do a much better job of. Describing it without any spoilers than I would so give us the gist of this. This is a very unique story as far as my experience with film, both culturally and even the age demographic of the Star and the setting all of that. Sure so the the movie is really about. Grandma want grandma and that's play by Chin. Who is eighty six years old? Originally the the character was supposed to be eighty. Ties actually older than the character itself. and. It's about this you know. She just was widowed, and was kind of left with very little from her husband, and and has of worries about you know her independence now and takes all her money, and takes it off from the bank, and and the little that she has in Ghost, the Casino and have. You know has her ups and downs there, and and then on Herreid back from the Chinatown bus from from foxwoods, see see comes into a a bag full of of money and she she takes the money, and it's it's you know. Of course. The money belongs to the gangs local gangs and. Elise onto this. Dark comedic. Kind of adventure which she comes into your this eighty six year old is in the middle of this gang. This gang warfare. Why a lot of our listeners remember tie site in especially as Auntie Lynda from joy, luck, club, years and years ago and you know. I was telling my wife, my family wash it and it's a rare day when our twenty one year old daughter. You know who so jaded. And her mother and father that when the movie ends in, the credits are rolling going. That was a fantastic movie, okay? So so that was a winner that was winner. Especially during the you know. Our daughter is sheltering at home though she should be away at college, but She's kind of out of her mind and moments and for us, you know she had never heard of the movie in. You know sometimes. Hey, let's watch a movie tonight and said I've got a movie. Let's squash lucky grandma Gina. What's it about? And I kind of gave her the gist. You know like what you just did, and she doesn't know any of you actors at all, but she was just carrying long as as we were too, and it was touching. It was funny And again as a Chinese American family. There's so many I. Call Them Cultural Easter eggs in this movie. That's that we're right. We're not used to seeing these things. Right and say see. The director was saying that this is like an Ode to Chinatown. Yes, and you know this is kind of talks about the cut. You never see movies kind of based you see movies that may be used Chinatown as a as a backdrop or kind of I. Or a gag, but this really takes place in Chinatown. It's if it's you know you see it from the view of of of the residents in Chinatown, which rarely ever. Hear or see about in in in Hollywood. You kind of see the back kind of the back alleys. You see the the The food stalls and. And the the you know the shopping and the groceries, and the the you know the you know the different meeting places with people from the you know the Mahjong places to the to the. Social clubs down the stairs and into the small room and opens up all of a sudden to this. This this gathering area, so yeah, it's really A. It's an Ode to Chinatown and something that I haven't really seen in in in this kind of in this way. Yeah, clearly, you guys show lease. It looks like to me. You shot this on location in new. York City's Chinatown. Is that correct? That's right and the casinos at foxwoods Oh. Okay, and you know getting from that Chinatown with this. What eight hour bus ride! To this foxwood place which I hadn't heard of before it also introduced me to this. Subgroup of Chinese gamblers because you know here here in the valley in Los Angeles I. See these buses leaving Monterey Park. Right and I'm not into gambling. I'm not chinese-speaking, but just that subculture was so interesting to lucky lucky lucky. All this stuff. It was eye opening for me. In the East Coast. It's it's. It's the big unit Bulgaria. Do these buses come from Boston? Rhode Island New York new..

"Very much for joining us glad to be here the country continues on the road to re opening many city are actually closing public roads to make way for restaurants and people in order to allow for people to properly social distance some public roads are being closed to allow these restaurants to expand their seating arrangements and provide more space for residents to run walk and ride for more on how cities are making room we'll speak to Michael R. S. transportation reporter at The Washington Post it's been a really quite interesting I talked to transportation and city officials around the country for the story and they basically said that they were trying to do everything they could to help businesses open up especially restaurants where it was too dangerous to have people packed inside it said one solution was to sort of help everyone get outside and that even includes on public streets that have been closed down that was done in Tampa in Florida it's being considered in Washington DC because he got into the places around the country and the idea is just can we do anything creative in this sort of awful period to try to help some of these businesses and also it beyond the issue of restaurants you have people just needing to to exercise these officials say sidewalks in some places crowded cities can be too narrow sort of cars buzzing by so they're trying to find ways to address that one of the special said about some of these proposed ideas it seems like they are getting a lot of support at least to close the roadways and what not really anything to do to get people out there and get the economy moving again interesting to talk to the folks in Minneapolis and what they were able to sort of cut through some of the bureaucratic problems that usually come up when you're trying to do anything in government and they were able to stitch together even in just the city of Minneapolis thirty eight miles of protected both ways for walking for biking for rolling people with disabilities just trying to find ways to sort of take this awful situation and see if they can't sort of ease people's discomfort.

"This is a cultural issue about race coming to its own and how it's going to present itself perceive itself and that's fascinating When it's like all right we can't blame slavery more. What the fuck are we gonNA do with ourselves now and they were asking themselves this question to see that you know how they handle this a hundred years ago to me is very fascinating and I know everyone talked to. I mean. This isn't a profound statement. People find history fascinating. It's a generally interesting subject to learn about. You know people past how things handled in the past. It's just so there's so much there. Yeah yeah one hundred percent all right. Well that is our that. Is Our episode for today. Michael in this episode about your favorite topic which is you. What was your favorite part My favorite part of this episode was That was good You talking about talking to the police. I think that is such an important thing. He's our important for people to realize that even if you're full pro-police which there's many reasons to be I can understand some of the claims people make are just so even on our side are soap. Sorta their face like. Was You talk about it? You start to laugh. You're like I can't believe people would just take two seconds this and not realize it. Well you are part of the problem all right guys. That's our episode for today. Thank you guys for listening will be keeping these up as long as the government is keeping us inside piece all right guys. Thanks so much for listening to today's show before we leave. I just wanted to say you know. A lot of people are always asking me about other libertarian. Podcasts that are out there. Which ones do I recommend ye? I know a lot of times these days. People have a lot of time on their hands. So I wanNA tell you about the peddling fiction podcast. It's a funny and Informative Libertarian. Podcast from Roth Bardy and radical. I checked out a couple of episodes. I think you guys are really going to like with Johnny. Feta has to say in his most recent episode he explores the Fed intervening in the stock market. And how the market is somehow going up while investors pulling out. I really think you're going to enjoy his podcast. And it might give you something to do while. You're harassing Brian. For whatever thing you think he has gotten wrong. Which is usually my fault. Anyway CHECK OUT. The peddling fiction podcast. This is a lying politicians. Worst nightmare destroyer of Keynesian economic fallacies. The link is right here in the episode description. And we've got a short trailer that That we're GONNA play for you right now. Anyone claiming that America's economy is in decline is peddling fiction and Libertarians are better Democrats than the Democrats and Republicans than the Republicans Republican President Republican controlled. Congress presided over the base expansion of government up to that point. Mr. What's going to happen? When they realized that social security is nothing but a racist sexist. I mean how badly do you have to screw something up before we finally conclude that government can't solve this problem? The free market is the ultimate expression of democracy. I do the show two days a week. Free Show you sure you don't WanNa see some evidence to back up any of their claims before you get us into another war. Their entire existence is exploitation. Everything they eat everything. They drink the roof over their heads. It was Paul Trade for from thefts at the threat of violence. Isn't it interesting that education system run by the government? Somehow churns out a bunch of people favor. The government everything. That's the type of accounting that would get you thrown in prison if anybody else where to do it. But that's how the federal government operates.

"All right let's get back into the show so even when you were working at the Cato Institute you still were basically you know on a Republican. You weren't yet a committed Republican liberty personally friendly surveys like I thought okay. This is going to be a mechanism a means to an end like it is possible or likely. I would say likely that a Republican President Congress is going to do a good job of pulling back The growth of government look. They just kill socialized healthcare. They just respond to shut the government. This is going to happen. These people believe that they impeached Clinton. You know they're holding therefore they're not fucking joking around and yeah they were. They were totally joke. Around was a total farce. Is One of the really sad things about the. The story of America is really. You know what we've done especially in in me in your lifetime is just what's happened in the twenty first century to this country. I mean we really just blew the twenty first century. Forget being anarchists and all the moral problems we can have with America going back. I'm not even talking about morality as much as I am. Almost just from a business perspective like the bottom line like we went into the year two thousand with just you know being the most successful country that's ever existed and what we've done in the first twenty years of of the twenty first century is really been to like jeopardize everything it's just been you know. I mean even this is why we're living in this world of like Sanders and trump. You know these like populist movements on the left and the right because even like average person can just look around and go wait a minute so like we can't win are wars. We can't balance our budgets. We can't protect our borders. We can't have a cohesive culture. We can't like the very basic things that you expect countries to be able to do where failing at all of them and it's and I really. I put like the majority of that. Blame on the moment that you're talking about in the year two thousand when the Republicans take the Presidency the House and the Senate and this is like look. This is how we're starting off the year two thousand with complete Republican control and they just we had the most disastrous eight years. The last two were not all Republican control. They had it up to two thousand six. But those six years. If you want to just say of Republican control Just I mean on every level and absolute disaster. So it's interesting that that was the moment that you kind of your Belief that that things might change if Republicans everything. It was really such a such a terrible time for the country. Oh yeah it was unambiguous that the data lady the first thing they do is Medicaid. Part d whatever it was like what? What are you talking about you people? I remember very vividly ninety six. When Bob Dole was running against Bill Clinton and Clinton says Bob Dole was going. Bill Clinton was the government to increase it. Eighteen percent increase a twelve percent. Whatever the number was and I'm just like are you fucking kidding? Me Like this is a it was just and while he's doing that they're saying that he wants all people starving in the street early at that the nation of just like this is not for me. Yeah well there's something you know. It's funny that you mentioned the Medicare Part D prescription drug program thing because that's that's an important distinction because even if you were to grant the Republicans which I don't at all but even if you were to grant them though like nine eleven war in Iraq had to happen all the military budget build up and all of that. The it's still that still doesn't explain the outrageous growth in domestic spending. The no child left behind in the Medicare expansions in the every single budget of every domestic program. Going up So yeah it was it that really was I. I think I opening to a lot of People a lot of right wing people in America and part of the reason why I mean. Obviously it's it's years later but part of the reason why in two thousand sixteen a guy like Donald trump is able to become president So what so happens to you after this period so now you're kind of disillusioned about the Republican Party. You've been exposed to a lot of libertarian Literature and been around a lot of libertarian people. So what was your next step in your intellectual journey. It was it. I just full blown. Enter at that point I mean it. There's Hannah in there. Yeah I mean I was a hardcore libertarian. Already I would say but I mean at that point especially seeing the war state is just like I I by twenty sixteen when when when he came on. My blogger fee already identified as anarchists But I think became a significant bit earlier. Also they're pulling the supreme court like who Bush's putting up. Its kidding me. And what's his name? His Attorney General I forget the guy's name. He was a former spence. It was space anyway. They had Greek statues in the Capitol building. Any cover them up because they were naked. Like these classical statues and I'm just like you. People are just authentic just pathetic you have no problem killing incarcerating your own citizens but like like a ancient statue of beauty of the human body. This is a problem for you. You were not at all what I'm about you've always I remember I think you you're the one who said your definition of a right-wing is was the that question about people being better than others right. It's IT'S A litmus test. Yeah so so. Just tell people what that is if they're not familiar. Sure I think we're in a bit of a delay but that's okay The Litmus test says it's an easy way to tell if someone is Right wing or left wing if you end already cringing at the comments. But that's okay ask. What do you think some people are better than others and someone who is right wing? We'll say yes and someone who's left wing will give a speech and it has happened worked for me successfully one hundred percent of the time if he doesn't need to hear so would you. Do you consider since me and you would both answer. Yes without without a speech to that to that question. Do you consider us to be right. Wingers I think by most definitions. Yeah although I would consider myself to be very left wing. But there's several different ways to define the terms so I always I kind of like I mean I understand. Different people have different definitions right leg. You're saying there's different ways to understand these terms and certainly there's a lot of people There's a lot of people who consider me a right winger. Although the hard right-wingers would consider me a left or a liberal or something like that But I always personally. I kind of like Walter blocks just third leg on the stool I to me. I really do think that that libertarian. Anarchists are. It's just almost like you. Have this right wing left wing thing and we're our own different thing so I was doing on and I think that's cheating. Yeah I UNDERSTAND. I understand that you you a lot of people do want that but even someone like you to to describe you as right wing to me just seems off particularly as you mentioned with so much so much of your cultural views on things. Just it doesn't seem accurate like it seems like it's not cheating it is actually fair to you neither left nor right wing your own branch because for very obvious reasons. Both of these terms have achieved a boatload connotations in public discourse and as mechanisms to dismiss preemptively. What a person is say. So and I talked about this in my book. Like if you WanNa Talk About Mussolini and Fascism. Right which he achieved a decade before Hitler was in power. You can't because as soon as the safe fascism Like right away. There's all these kind of Gatien's not inaccurately because this is where it goes. You really make sure not down that slippery slope but again when you say right wing it has. And that's that's that's the other thing becomes funny that you have these boomer cons like Hitler becomes potato like it. They'll think I'm right. Wing Hitler's bad. There for Hitler's right right and then they'll have the rationalization as to why the left you'll be like you're crazy. I'm left Ray. Left brings good. Hit was obviously right wing Blah Blah Blah and people wanted to find these terms as whichever one I am. It's all the good stuff and they are. It's all the bad stuff and it's like it would be really nice if we kind of have the teams separate so easy but right wing and left wing have both many positive connotations and many negative connotations in many definitions and it always amazes me..

"America's next enemy is look at who were funding right now. Problems are open government way to work. Hey what's up? Everybody let this be your part of the problem for the next hour or so. This madness is continuing I. Of course I'm joined by my great friend. The the wonderful hilarious and thought provoking Michael Malice. How are you sir? I'm great very good. You got some new headphones for this one. These are might noise canceling headphones. That my buddy told me about a wear them to the gym. Remember the gym and notice anyone around you at. I thought with the like retentive a DJ. Oh yes very good. There we go. Dj's another class of workers who haven't been able to do much recently. It's IT'S WEARY. Keep thinking of like New People or you're like. Oh yeah they're completely screwed over. It's like the ones you think of like a car kind of obvious. Yeah yeah any anyone who counts on anything where people get together which is a whole lot of people anyway so for this episode. I thought we would talk about your favorite subject. Which is you and I thought I know I was thinking about it and I was like you know. What should we do next time? And then I was like you know. There's some things like that I don't know about you. I think would be interesting to ask you about On on the show and we can all Learn about them together. Because I've so I am pretty sure the first time we met. I think was at your debate with Tom Water. Yes so you debated Tom on the legacy of Hamilton something I forget exactly what the resolution was Alexander. Hamilton is a hero for the cause of Liberty Right. Okay and this was the like the precursor to the Soho Forum. Gene obscene was running debate series. But it was before he created the Soho form and they had this debate. It was like at a library. It was really cool event. They sold it out and it was like packed is really great debate. Very interesting and thought provoking is it. Could we got two? E mails from the venue complaining. That there were too many people at a closed down the entire series. There was like one or two after US John. Lott and it was done. Oh yeah that's always a that's weird complaint. When the venue complains that you sold too many tickets rear cross like well. That's kind of our goal is to sell as many tickets as possible so they can't be like it's like if you were a band and afterwards they're like you rocked too hard like well. I mean this is what we're trying to do here. So maybe we need a new venue. Because this is this is really the whole point But so we've known each other and this was how. How long ago was this? When did this happen? That twenty six tortoise it had trump tweets. It must have been twenty fifteen. I think the background making fun of Tom. Oh that's right. Yeah yeah that was great tweets from trump. That you Doctored up or at least I think you doctored up perhaps you actually trump to tweet them out but a we've known each other for about five years and we've been friends And but there are some things that I don't know about you that I was curious about and so I was curious. What like when did you become interested in like the philosophy politics and you're not super political but the stuff that you're kind of known for now like were you into the stuff as a kid did it. Did you not care and figure it out later in life for like? When was your first interest in philosophy? Well my first interested in politics was there is a show on Tv in the eighties called backs of life and Michael. J. Fox played Alex Keaton and he was the only person on TV. Who looked like me who I could relate to any extra really funny. 'cause WHOOPI GOLDBERG. Got Her start in similar way. She was watching. I was Diane. Carol has called Julia and the wilby turned to her mom and said look there's a black lady on TV and she's not a made and this was kind of this mon for her and it. Was that way for me with Alex Keaton. A because he was small he was smarter than everybody. She was a bitter wise ass and I couldn't watch the show. I never could watch it because they made a cloud at him and I resent it. It really bothered me so because he was those the show. The whole premise of the show is his parents were hippies but their son Alex. Keaton was basically as Reagan Republican. Who was driving the parents crazy? So as a result of this I thought it was a Republican. Had literally no idea what that meant literally none is. This is middle school right right but then I found that if you say your Republican to like your teachers in New York City Brooklyn This bother step and that is something. I enjoyed from a very early age. A contempt for authority Hatred these Mediocre Mediocre People. Expect you to seek their approval. A things like this so when I got to High School. A friend of mine. Who later was my roommate. He gave me a copy of rush. Limbaugh spoke the way things on a limbaugh limbaugh now. Very much symbolizes kind of boomer con. Ben Shapiro kind of situation but will people don't appreciate this is what Ninety-one Ninety-two limbaugh was. Probably the first one he was Jon Stewart for Republicans. He was the first one to use humor and sarcasm and condescension aggression toward the other team and no one really it to that level before and he did really really well. I remember vividly. There was a clip. He made of this is years later. Jenner late night show and had Ted Kennedy Introducing Bill Clinton and he goes and I wanted to Clinton and Clinton slander But he just say they slowed.

"Blah so it kind of divided up some five thousand dollars kind of divided up to two thousand and then on my birthday ten thousand dollars cash to people following me so I thought that was so cool so cool. We connected that he wanted to do something with Jerry. I think it's equal so I didn't really get to delve into it too much with him because I don't WanNa like. Obviously he knows his own charity. But if you guys don't know it's Bret michaels life rocks in basically you can go to Michael Dot Com and you can donate and the money goes everywhere in one of the things that I so. He does a lot with that. They kill physically. Go like give toys to kids at Christmas. He like. He'll physically traveled to countries to like help. The kids there and stuff And one of it was really cool. Is Kids with juvenile diabetes. They use the money money. The money goes to different different charities and organizations but they'll use them the money to take kids who have juvenile diabetes to camps where they can learn to manage it and to control it and I always have those interesting. I knew Brett was diabetic. He talked about that a lot. I just can't imagine like five Anson's throughout the day and then he gets up to work out like not. This is just an hour-long me like saying how great Michael I WANNA be with. Someone and I mean is hardly because he has now. I don't work out and eat like shit but I wanna be with someone that does work out. Because here's the thing you'll know me too. I'm morph it. I'm not saying I'm just saying in general I'm wharf into the person that around and or vice versa into each other and they've never been someone who's like really into like working out like if I had a if I was around someone that like worked out every morning like yeah probably work out every morning too. I was a little bit. I know you bring up days. And every fucking podcast. I'm so sorry but what the fuck whatever But he kind of did he would. He would go to the gym in the morning and then I started getting a personal trainer going to gym in the morning too. And it's kind of like our theme like get up half sack's okay. Let's go work out. I'm the only bitch gets a fatter from having a personal trainer. I swear it I would go and get so hungry afterwards and I go get like cheese sticks Arby's and then I would go home and sleep which is like awful. I go eat mozzarella sticks. Just pass the buck out like anyway. I know you know. I wish I could have been more of this. Trish more relaxed. I was just so excited and nervous rather about a couple of things. I was nervous. 'cause I'm actually really sucky with the technology even though my job is online and online stuff like I thought. Oh what if I can't hear him or if it's like choppy like it happens all the time with me and my wife isn't great shop. And then he's in. He was in his guitar room for those listening to the Audio. Here's a room with a bunch of ours and it's the room that you always see him in on like tick talk or his website and so it was just a real and it just happens quickly like all of a sudden he popped up and true story true story. I had tickets to go see him on the same tour I was like I'm going. I had I had a full roster of concerts of summer. It was new found glory. I was GONNA go see Bah in Green. It's going to go see my chemical romance MC I had tickets all four nights to their shows and I forget in like those not going to happen. I know that's like like yes and I totally agree like health and safety a thousand percent. I WANNA get sick. I want you know what I mean like. Of course but yeah and then and then it was poison Motley crue Izhak. There was another one but it was. I'm the eighties hairband purse. I kinda was at was actually thinking about this now while so I before. Maybe it was because of the first season rocket. I don't know but when I moved to Hollywood. My goal is to be people Anderson. I wanted to do a sex tape. I wanted to be a blonde bombshell. I wanted have big fake tits and I wanted to be entertainment. Somehow I kind of achieved all that Rockstar has been so I'm just getting But I was in a phase where I was a fucking groupie and I wasn't I wasn't a Groupie for any old. I was a groupie for eighties bands. I can talk about this on the podcast a little bit. What then WHO's still listening? Because I don't really talk about it. It's not like I dated any of these people long term so I feel like I can freely talk about this. There is being called faster pussycat and I again. I use the term dating very loosely. I definitely was just hooking up with all these people is love I would like. Hey Yeah I wanNA fuck like I need a little more substance which I love it. That's what he said at the beginning of our interview and he was just kind of need a personality. 'cause I was so my head was in the clouds. I was just so discombobulated. I'm like trying to because I consider myself to be a really good listening because I love people and fasteners much about I was just I was like I was literally like my little puppy whenever he comes into my house like he's everywhere like a new person comes in he'll p. on like that's how. I felt I was. I felt like I had to actually even though I went to the bathroom. But but when meet these guys off my space he's Eighties Rockstar? So there was a guy named Jamie down from Pussy cat and when he was in faster pussycat so weird to when I worked at a strip club. Godfather is in Canoga. Park actually met like a girl that he was de. His girlfriend was working there at the same time. It was ten years ago. I don't know where he is now but he looked more like Steven Tyler back in the eighties. They'll have the eighties hair which I thought eighties rockstars were really beautiful. They were really pretty. Tommy Lee always had a very pretty look to them. Vince Neal Bret Michaels was definitely the prettiest I thought I and I'm not saying that truly. He was like the prettiest looking he had vince. Neal ask five like they have a similar survive but Brett's face was just so much prettier. Beautiful his is anyways so yeah so. Tamie down leasing or fashion. I got kind of looked like them back in the eighties. But then his my space page where I met him he more Marilyn Manson vibe which I was also kind of like into years. Louis Yeah Love Tannock on this. That's how I was feeling And yeah the sex was not with him but he was. He was he was sweet. He just was smoking. Oughta cigarettes and Drinking I don't know why all these people are hooked up with Agrippa with another guy named Sylvia. Rhone he was the drummer from skid. Row He was like the second drama from skid row. I don't think he was. The original drummer skid row was pretty sick that was a pretty lit I think. Hey roseberry I'm not gonNA lie. Actually if you go back to my early youtube videos I think dancing to like slave to the grind or something is a dancer brand. This is restored because I had a strip stripper playlist and I used to dance to sunset. Boulevard what does this song Hollywood hills it was a bret michaels. Go that far and they use it in the rock of Love One of the Pretty Kitty Justin black and just Gigi Hill. Abi Or she'll go daddy and don ring is like. Please let me enter dues myself. I'm GonNa get you up like there's no one else. Sunset Your Sugar Daddy. Right was if you WANNA go that far it was a good song beanie amy. It was really. We basically did a remake of hot for teacher where liquid a teacher and I was the one in Horny for that teacher. And Yeah we David Lee. Roth just kind came into our we cross paths. And we're like. Hey you WanNa intro the song I did. And he's like yeah and you know what to wrap this all up kind of goes with breads message to just kind of go for it. What did he keeps saying? Like bleeding yourself like it. Believe in yourself because that's too cheesy on the cool the way he said it. Bet On yourself. Yeah just bet on yourself I can do it you know. Just do it and you'll find a way like hey you'll find a way and I thought that was so inspiring. I think that's so cool the whole conversation. It was a mixed like Oh is all fucking hot but also like oh my way to me. My Dad like what a fucking cool dad he would be rape. I feel so honored. I feel so blessed you to everyone who made that happen like Yeah this was. This was cool. I other than that like. Yeah some may say it's unconventional way. I redid the whole thing so I love playing basketball. I'm not great at it but I love playing not. They're not shooting was great and then next thing I know it was a I got to go karts out and because I was in complete orange for two weeks I was literally by myself doing this and we were working and the next thing I know kids are here. "Like you are the the first person of this thing. Whatever I don't know look it up on urban dictionary so it's the og of the PPC PC. Oh I want a Hoodie that says oh gee of the PPC therapy great coffee game. Using I'm using the OJ. He see Coffee Mug today. That's apropos. That's another word Angela. Apropos nose at me and it means appropriate. Yeah I got it okay. All right so they're having a riveting conversation in this meeting May WanNa know what time we should bring out the cake. One Yawns Away Pantheon Pam says one o'clock to which Angela immediately says one thirty and then Pam Yawns. Yeah and then Angeles asses her yeah. She's like I'm sorry. Are we boring you will you know? There's in a deleted scene. I improvised the line where I said not Phyllis yes. Do you remember that high? Do I did and we all laughed. We used to laugh a lot when we did these. Ppc scenes will. They would let us go. They would give us a few lines and then they would just let us go and we would improvise the most boring like conversations like on purpose. We'd be like well. I don't know guys how I feel about paper plates. I mean which size should we get? So we get the large Oval One. No one gets oval who gets an OVAL PAPER PLATE. No one I think we get the square ones square paper plates. We would like we would do for so long. That's because Great Daniels loved the PPC. He loved our mundane banter so much he loved the dynamic of it and so he would let us. Just go on forever. I loved it. Yes it was so fun well then Dwight enters and he tells us that Michael. Once tricked handles for his cake. Yeah he gives us a list a list of SURPRI yet. Micheal would like and this is one Angela tells dwight that this is a closed-door meeting. Michael Ones Trick Candles. He wants a stripper. Gram and Angeles like no now. It's a closed-door meeting and then there's this sort of odd like stair off between Dwight and Angela and Pam's like what is happening yes. I have a fan catches. Well what this is. A fan catch from sexually woke. This person wrote in to say Phyllis is breaking at four minutes. Nineteen seconds when you talk about the stripper. Gram I did not notice this. The first time I watched it and I saw it gets a little smirk and I think you could think it was. Phyllis the character but Angela. We know Phyllis and I think this was a real phyllis smile. I'm sure it was. We laughed a lot in those scenes so I love that. I'm going to go back and look for that. That's so cute. I also want to note that when rain comes in and out of the door. John is not at his desk in the background so he bailed on some background work way to go. John Way to be sneaking get out of that I know I guess what was he. He was probably playing Madden football in his trailer with Brian with you and their downtime when they had scenes and they would yeah they were so loud you remember they were so loud they be like get at get them all right so at four minutes. Thirty five seconds. We now have this phone. Call between Michael and Jan and Michael's office. Yeah and Jenna. Did you catch who is in the room with Michael Ryan Ryan is sitting there for the whole phone call? And the call is so awkward. He's like hey I called she happy birthday and she's like it's not my birthday and he's like Oh. I thought we had the same birthday. And she's like no and then she's like Happy Birthday Michael and then she's like are we being filmed and he's like nope not at all and then he says jam just feel free to say whatever is in your heart and then doesn't she just like hang up clerk. Dial tone and they'll Ryan is sitting here and I have a little something to point out you go and watch the deleted scenes. There is a beginning to the scene. And that is that Ryan. The temp has been given the task to tie those balloons in Michael's Office. And so this is where the balloons though him and Michael are in his office. Ryan is tying a balloon to his chair and then he's like can I leave and Michael's like nope. Thank you so much for telling me this because I was wondering where those. Dang balloons come from because Michael did not walk in with them. He must've somehow ordered Ryan attempt to get them. Yes and then this Khalid of seen as the proof he makes them stay in for the phone. Call Oh God so miserable I feel so bad for Ryan that scene well the next Cena's very cringe as well because michaels in the kitchen and he is just hovering over this box of doughnuts waiting for someone and then win. Stanley comes in. He's like Oh my gosh. Somebody must have brought in doughnuts for my birthday Michael. We saw you carry that box in. When you arrive my buddy Michael Michael Michael Michael Michael. I have something to point out here. So you know and Booze cruise you and Jim. Look at each other for twenty seven seconds of silence right. Yeah twenty seven seconds. Is that right? Twenty seven seconds. That's right okay. I want you to know how long Michael stood with his hand on that coffee pot waiting for someone to come in so he could act like he was putting himself a cup of coffee. Act Surprise there were doughnuts for his birthday. He stood there for ten seconds of pure silence. Wow now if you think about the TV show you guys. That's a long time to leave a character just sitting there waiting for someone to notice him. That is so true. That's amazing. Ten seconds. Ten seconds he stood there looking around waiting for someone to walk in and then we'll and then later when toby comes in. It's so sad. Toby sees the doughnuts and he finds out it's Michael's birthday and he gives the most just upbeat genuine genuine happy birthday Michael. And then Michael is so me. Michael's like you didn't Burrell. Yeah I guess I'm not going to remember to give you a donut. I know he's such a third to toby. Toby so nice to him. I know so also happening in this episode. Is everyone kind of learning about the fact that Kevin's waiting for these skin test result? So like gyms in the in the break room and they're talking about it and Kelly over. Here's Yeah Kelly you mean Mindy Mindy over. Here's that is a mandate kaeling talking head when she's like. Oh my gosh. I never thought about death. Until Princess Diana's funeral which was so sad and then she pauses. She's like that. My sister's like oh it's such a dark it's such a darn talking head so dark. How many got through that. She almost didn't I want you to know look at six minutes. Five seconds mindy is so about to laugh. She's holding it together. Well then. The Accounting Department is discussing Kevin's possible. Skin Cancer Angela. And you are. I mean Angela. Martin is a real downer. She's a little bit of Debbie Downer. I mean Oscars like you know what? I'm sure it's going to be fine and I'm like don't give them. Also you don't know that is that pragmatic I think. She is You know I yeah. She's pragmatic she doesn't need to see the rosy picture she's like just give me the stats the what are the stats on this. The stats are. You should be worried. Yeah that's what the stats say. So next up Michael. Gets a delivery. Oh Miami he thinks that the woman is his stripper gram. He's so excited he's Giddy. He literally says here. We go and then hands alive made me laugh so hard. He's like. Oh this chair has arms. Is that GONNA be alright that line? That made me laugh so hard. He's like it'll be fine. You'll probably you'll walk around. It improvised that I feel like he improvised that. I don't know I don't know but I bet you're right I do. I wish I had the script for this one because I would look it up but I feel like that feels like that feels like something you notice in the moment right because they just pulled the chair side and it had arms and I think he saw it and he said it. That's that's what I it feels very much. Like a Steve Improv moment. Well I do want to just give a shout out to this guest actor Susan Foley who played the delivery woman. I thought she was great shoes. Fantastic shape played at super straight super. Real made it very very funny. Her confusion was not overplayed. It was perfection. Well-done Sousa and then we just find out some sad back story of Michael's Childhood Janai. His childhood breaks my heart. If so we have this birthday party. When he was seven he was so excited. He said they got a pony and cart and the pony gave him a rash and his mom rubbed Yam on him for three hours and then he missed the party. He said it was his worst birthday. We'll this is a runner and some of them got cut out but Michael had this runner throughout this episode of all of his worst birthdays. Comparing it to this one so this guy had a lot about birthdays. Well he's GonNa get pick me up from Dwight who's going to play the recorder for him while he eats doughnuts. Dwight is playing billy. Joel which is a runner on our show. We're constantly going to the Billy Joel Music Library on the office. I don't know why that is the longest time But of course Dwight Calls Him William Joel and then Michael is lamenting how he's being treated in the office and he says I bet Luke Perry's friends don't treat them like this and he references this poster that this is what the delivery woman was delivering. It is a poster of James Dean. Not Of Luke. Perry that his mom sent him for his birthday. That's what his mom sent him. Now do you think that his mom meant to send him Luke Perry or she meant to send him James Dean and Michael Just mistook it for Luke. Perry which which one is Michael? A fan of or neither isn't just Michael's mom was like I don't know what to give him. I think Michael is probably a fan of Luke. Perry and that's who his mom thought it was. That's what I think. I think like that story. I don't know but I I mean I feel like that's something my mom would do or my sister when you're at Christmas. My sister got me a Green Bay packers baseball hat. Yeah and I was like I don't I don't get it and she was like well. You went to Baylor Green and gold. Same colors I was like. What same colors right? Same call right so I feel like that could be sort of a mom moment. Angela one year for Christmas. My mom got me from I. Guess a local art fair in Saint Louis. "I do nothing wrong. Oh Susan the product of anyone who walks up to you and says hey lip tarred get out of here. Get the fuck out my face Susan. She's trying to be funny. I think that's the other thing. I don't think you know how to role play people in the south because this is what Susan. There's no telling me citizen bullet. Hey Hollywood are you vote in different out there Hollywood. You guys got some fruity tendencies out there. Hollywood that's the that's the South Susan. It just took one but I think that she's trying to be funny. I think that a lot of people don't understand a lot of times. People are mean to you. They're usually trying to be funny and they're just bombing because a joke that doesn't land is in either an insult or ally right so a lot of times. They're just trying to be funny in bombing. You're right so what should I do. You do it to me okay. Hey big shot. I can't believe I find you. Funny out there wait now you just walk into that is actually the one thing that i Hansen your whole life. You might have been funny. How they get you on them show what they do? That's what my family does always like. How did this happen? I mean you would never funny. This is so weird you a never would have seen this coming or my family in Texas will I'd say Jesus did it. They'll be like well. Thank Jesus is watching over. And I'm like Jesus didn't do any of this. I see I worked really hard earned this. Jesus had nothing to do with this like I ended up having to fight over like trying to share credit on my career with this. which is Lithuanian? That's a no win situation but I just think you have to just laugh laugh. Just laugh. They're trying to be funny. Hey live towards yes. That's it and then just so you're so funny. Just ask them questions. That's the other thing people that are old. They're just trying it'd be funny. They're trying to relate to you they're trying to make you laugh. Just ask them questions. Put it back on them. How are you doing? What's going on with you? Where do you plan to be buried plot yet? Do you have cancer now. You Might WanNa think about how you treat people. That'd be a good idea. Your thoughts about that. Your daughter still pregnant. I just think that we all go home with a specific set of expectations. That our family is like trying to hurt us and and we make it worse than sometimes are just. Don't go home. That's my advice. Yeah if you have truly bad family. Don't go home but my thing is I do want to work on. This and I agree with you that when I go home when I know that you deserve when I go home for the holidays I do think that I wanna work better on being better this I I flick something work better on being better this sometimes I feel like I'm doing this service to my family. Because they want the best version of me and I'm there being Moody Little Brat you are you are Bratty Addi. Say That you're ready. I can say I'm Brandy 'cause I've been Kinda Haha. I'm so earth weight but my producers are telling me do. We need introduce our guest and stop bickering Michael reports here. I'm excited experience. Love Him so much and I think it's important to have guests on like this because I I just I think we're at this point. Where people if they disagree with each other they just don't talk or they don't go on each other's shows are everywhere in this echo chamber? Where a bunch of people that agree with each other doing this circle jerk work in podcasts? And they're just like agreeing like Michael. Sometimes I agree with them sometimes. I and that's why we're good friends. Well rounded person. He's just like he says what he means. He's not pandering to anybody. Anybody don't have to agree with him. You don't have to be pissed off if he says something you don't like he just he. I I respect anyone. WHO believes what they say and has a strong strong opinion? Even if I don't agree the funny so there's the pre-christmas exercise even if you don't agree with everything. Michael says this exercise in tolerating an opinion that is different than in yours. Just it's funny just laughs very funny Michael rapaport get in here please. You'll get the I. Don't rolling yes. The reason why I don't wear headphones is because I'm looking looking at you and I could hear you like if I was in another room and sound engineer.
