'cause you know working with a company and I was Ed is is true is definitely true and then it just dawned on me on my own right walking distance from staples center some light. Let me go ahead and pay homage and then walk over to a welcome to staples center and at the time it was just like twenty people. Whose guy would you know people upset you know? And then by the time I left it was like a thousand people like within our within like two hours thousand people there just in front of the staple center and it would just chilling like those. Those are really hard days of work like when someone that the era body love and then they pass they die or whatever situation goal on and there's no celebrities to interview. But so I'm just I'm going to report a mode you know I'm almost like I bury my feelings. How feels capture the moment? Everyone's morning inside. So I gotta take pictures and video of caption people just bawling on our is our people just mad upset and just captured that moment and Japan just more people coming more people come on like pro people really love is. Do they really really. I love him. So yeah it was one of the moments when you hear one in your celebrities die or so many your heroes die like where were you when JFK. Where were you went to were? You wouldn't trends. Where were you when people pass? Where were you when Michael Pass? Where were you whatever? Whatever so just to be in that moment and being in news? 'cause you gotta put yeah put your personal feelings aside and then you gotta like document the moment and I'm like this really really tough so there's also only a handful of people again like this that at least for me that I seen his whole career and I think that's probably where you go. I remember when he got drafted. I remember when he wanted the dunk contest his rookie year. I remember when he wasn't playing but everyone kept talking about how good he was. And the impact on businesses, which we were just talking about the impact of the road diet in mar vista on biz twenty businesses closing because of the Rhode Island Venice boulevard there in the west side of LA. Let's go to Pete combs now ABC reporter in Panama City Beach, Florida for the latest there on hurricane Michael passing through Pete. Welcome back. Hey, it's good to be with you. Thank you. Now when we talked to you yesterday. It was just the aftermath of the storm. And you'd said it didn't seem that bad pass through really quickly. But obviously you've probably gotten a look around in the last twenty four hours. Yeah. A lot more of a look around that I had win. The storm initially passed away in about an hour before dark to check it out. Oh, my God, the devastation. Here is incredible. It is heartbreaking the amount of structure in here is unprecedented. In my experience. What I have seen here is every building I have come across in the Panama City area has been damaged or destroyed. Trees are snapped off in half. I've seen power lines down power poles down some of the industries, but even worse is in the residential areas. Where people may have hunker down during the storm, even though they were told to leave. I see devastation all along the street the houses have been damaged and there are trees down blocking the street block after block after block. And when you look at it that way, you realize the tremendous efforts search and rescue teams now have before them they're going to have to cut their way into the street. Dow maybe a block and then cut away from the street over. To the houses because of all the down. Trees didn't go in the house. Check to see if there's anybody there see if they need help if they do get that help, and then repeat the whole process over again and go to the next house. That's how bad it is here. And I tell you the only word I can think of right now is heartbreaking. You know, we talked about this. The winds were the big deal when it came ashore. I mean upwards of one hundred and fifty miles per hour. It's been reported. So that just that just obliterated certain structures. I imagine. Yeah. You know, the only thing that I guess if you could say there's a silver lining in lighting in this. And there's really not much of one at all. It's the fact that this storm did not linger. Imagine if this had been Florence this entire part of the Florida coast would have been grounded dust. Yeah. What is their effect of flooding? Or is it mostly just the winds just tore stuff down? There's been a bit of flash flooding here. The storm search here did damage some buildings along the coast itself, but really this is a wind event and the wind here did incredible damage I've seen trees twisted on their trunks. Not just not just split off their trunks twisted, and then thrown to the ground a lot of houses have trees on top of them. And that's again going to be a major challenge for search and rescue teams. What was it was a lot of people did evacuate in Panama City beach or not? In Panama City beach, and in Panama City itself, we're talking perhaps fifty to seventy percent of those who should have evacuated actually did the rest appear to have stayed. And that is the big problem now because you know, they told you that you weren't going to get any help. If you stayed if something happened during the storm emergency responders wouldn't come out wouldn't help you out you'd be on your own. Well, now that the of die down those very same people who stayed they may be hurt. They may be badly hurt and they made beat some help. And they're not gonna be able to get it for some length of time because it's gonna take that long to get to them. Hey, one more thing guys. And this is probably important if you have friends or loved ones here, and that is the Verizon phones, don't work. So if your friends or loved ones have rising, foes, those phones are out and there's no telling win they will be back. So if you're calling them and saying, hey, are you okay? And you don't get an answer. And you start to really work up a big sweat about it. Hold on. It's the phones. It's likely your friend, your loved one is okay. Just look out for the problem with the phones. Imagine most of the power is still out there electric city. All of the power is still out here. No power in cases. No phone. No gas people are lined up now at the Sam's Club off of airport wrote there in in Panama City beach, sorry in Panama City, proper and they're going in like water two at a time and basically coming out with water. There are charging stations that have been set up by battery makers to help people charge their phones because they don't have any place to do that at home the military is here, I'm seeing the national guard. I just saw about three busloads of national guardsmen, actually, a lot of military aircraft a lot of coast guard aircraft. And as it turns out the coast guard is actually surveying practic-. Exactly. What is standing and what is not? And what is not seems to be in authority right now. And what's the deal with FEMA? They on the scene there yet the federal government. Absolutely famous here. I've also seen rescue teams brought in by FEMA from as far away as Texas urban rescue water rescue a lot of people are here on behalf of the federal government, and what I can tell you is the need here is so great that. It's just sopping it up like a sponge, you could throw a lot more people at this place, and they will and it's still gonna take a long time to get to everyone. They need to get to to assess the damage to assess the injuries and to figure out what needs to be done to put Panama City and points east back on their feet. Pete combs ABC news reporter for KFI. Thanks for coming on. Thanks for having me guys. Right. He's in Florida there in the area of Panama City. You also heard that that was a place called Mexico beach. These are some of the most devastated parts, it's the Florida panhandle that got hit yesterday by hurricane Michael which again very quickly but had such strong. Winds reports were hearing about up to six people have been killed and moved up through Georgia now is affecting the Carolinas. Some people I'm reading were in their homes in the tree fell on their home and killed him. I thought maybe people are outside. But I guess this storm is so powerful they had that affected the tree crashed right through the home and killed them. Right. We have more coming up, John and Ken show. But right now, a news update from Debra Mark to men in Tennessee have been indicted by a grand jury for allegedly raping a nine month old girl in filming the attack.
