He would be open to making a one race comeback. I have thought about a little bit. I missed the driving part a lot. I miss the people. I don't miss the schedule but something like that would be a lot. I had the chance to go. Do some testing in the sim for daytona. That was really neat so towards the end of my career. I really enjoyed the courses. So if i were going to do something they'll probably be on road course or nascar by chance. Change the package where there was down about thousand horsepower. Claim that checkered flag, not a lot of great people around me. Keep me pushing and we had a great offseason to prepare. My Rudy's come in and done a phenomenal job, and he knows how to how to push the right buttons with me and you know, I know exactly what he means when he says that, so I just had to go to work, and luckily we had enough car there. At the end behind Byron and Reddick were Martin Truex Jr. Kyle Larson and Kevin Harvick completed the top five. "Okay. So let's move on to the road course at daytona. We have to go very far. We're still at the Daytona race track. They're just moving some combs and stuff around so let's see who we got for good picks for for the weekend. Now i'm looking back at the I'm i'm not even looking at the rolex twenty four the races or anything. I'm looking at last year's race at this track as well as the clash this year. All the guys. That ran the clash. This year are fresh and Again last year we had a race here so we have a little bit of data to fall back on now so now you would think i would pick the nine cars first guy but i'm not. He's my second guy we're gonna go with the seventy eight cars. My first pick. He had awesome. Run in the clash. He kept coming from the back to the front. He did finish their place here last year. And you got a couple of bonus points in the second segment. I believe it was. I believe he can take that checkered flag on sunday. Okay so now we'll take a look at chase elliott in the nine car. He's got stage points at this track in both stages last year he won this track last year and he's been dominant force on road courses. So you can't pass the nine car chase elliott for the daytona road course and then finally the last guy wanna look at. He won last week. The number thirty four michael mcdowell. The team morale is at all time high. It's his first win and he's not some road course racer. He finished tenth year last year. And using the thirty four car will also help. You spread your allocations. For the rest of the season michael mcdowell. He's on my team. Okay folks well. That's all i got for you this week. I'm hoping this Get you kicked off to a good start.

"It's funny. You say that. I'm on my way up the door. Sport tonight Flying in detroit renting car driving through the snow tooth or sport it. It's been planes trains automobiles. I'm my sponsor bombarded as it's been lear jets trains automobiles since Since the way man it's been so crazy it's been absolute owen. Yeah but you wouldn't have any other way. I bet it's just been it's just been fantastic. And what a race. Yeah let's show. I didn't realize that it was as crazy as it was until afterwards i went march. Three plays like that wasn't insane race. So i knew up front like that that we had so many lead changes and it seemed like nobody keep the lead longer than like a lab. You know it was just back the back end. I thought that this was one of the most entertaining racists and recent history for the truck series. I honestly thought that the that the trucks were so stable this year with side skirts that it just made for some amazing racing. I mean back and forth. You couldn't hold onto the lead but then you could make heck of a run on the outside getting back again. It was just lots of commerce goers and it seems like in past years the issue has been. You could get to somebody but not necessarily around them. That didn't seem to be the case for you or any of the any of the guys. Now you you can make some crazy ron's and you can make it work. Well i mean roper. Caught me off guard going into turn one of the last lap pools downright for where did you come from. And i thought i had the inside line. I thought i was in the catbird seat and then Sure enough he he gets run me. I was upset for like half a second then. I realized wait a minute on second at daytona on the last lap. That's actually not a bad thing. So lost the lead little upset but then it worked out great. I had my tv behind me. Matt craft and he was pushing us pushing his boundaries. Push him up bardi tundra. We made it to the front but if it wasn't for him i don't know if gotta get the win. I gotta get him a huge club. You had some big wins in your career. You've won at your home track of kentucky. You've one at darlington but you said this was the biggest one of your career and obviously speaks of daytona is the biggest part of our sport. But how long have you dreamed of this moment. Because i read somewhere that you used to play daytona on video games when you were a kid. Oh yeah heck yeah. Who didn't right. I mean we're going around all these cart races and we'd be in the middle of indiana or out arkansas wherever racing cars and we you know me and my other buddies that were all competitors with at that age. Our ten years old nine years old and We go into their trailer. we'd be playing this daytona game against each other than we go out on and race cards against each other. It just brought back so many memories right so long ago. I've had this goal. In my mind that i wanted to race at daytona and wanted to get a win there and to know that you know we. We did it. That was i. Don't know it. Just it's it's almost like validation to right because there's been so many ups and downs in my career since since i came out canaan series and you know. Now we've we've got a few wins in the truck series. I've got a really steady team behind me now and it just it seems like things are going great and it was a little bit of allegation for the fact that hey i can win on superspeedway now like we know how to get it done. The thing is you could do everything right and still not get a superspeedway win. Anybody who's been in racing. We'll tell you that. Sure you've known that yourself but i'm curious about the way. This thing has all unfolded for you. Now because you've any anybody who's been in racing those this to you have some high highs and some lows. What have you learned about kind of keeping that even keel. And how will that help you going forward. Yeah i so. I think it really came to me about you. Know two thousand and nineteen started working with tj majors and he was coaching me on how to kind of just become a better big picture driver. Somebody that can see everything that's going on in the race and still see this whole season at the same time and Two years with him. And now i've got tj belt behind me. Coaching me and he you know he's a. I raced against them last year. He's a driver right so I've i've got some really good people behind me coach. Me and i didn't necessarily have that. I and i'll tell you it's made all the difference in my career and i think a little bit of age two. I've gotten older and slow down a little bit Just mentally just trying to take everything. And i thought like. I've got just a better outlook on racing as a whole and the experience helps a lot too right. I've been the trucks now for a while and at this point i feel like i know exactly what to expect when i go into each race and i set goals for myself on trade so i i go in there and i told myself exactly what i need to. I need to be here on each stage. And i don't need a pressure to be in this situation it. I've seen it now. Everything's coming a little bit easier to me. I guess all right well. Then congratulations on a strong talking to the season. Look forward to seeing you at daytona. This week and i know you'll be chomping at the bit to get back at it when you've got that little mobile for vegas congrats and thanks for your time man. Thanks so much. I appreciate.

"Number of star set out last night after teams marched on so chris the player that set out last night that is most crucial to his. Team's success is you can see from the graphic. We didn't even put k. Deal near a lot of great players sat out and it was tough because without any of these stars. Their teams aren't winning the championship. But i'm gonna go with joel b. as the most critical guy who is team success. Nb we all know having a great season the sixers are one in five without him. One in five. I said earlier. The lakers four without anthony davis the sixers lose five out of six games without embiid they. Their net rating is sixteen points. Worse when joel embiid is not on the floor. So he clearly distraught makes the stars to drink. I should say with the philadelphia seventy six. Yeah i'm with you there. When you look across the league a lot of great players but joylin be impacts this team than most guys because of what he provides on both ends of the court and he's arguably having his best season as a pro. And so when you look at that you need him to be healthy in on the court. When you're going up against those elite teams in this nba and with joel embiid sideline. It just takes away a lot and we saw last night in a loss. What- been simmons had to do but they still lawsuit greg my name. Oh japan's account but this right here you got it wrong. It's all about. Kevin durant the next three games. Okay other brooklyn nets. Have the lakers clippers in phoenix. Coming up here. The boy breeze right past past the canes. They're going to need catch. Kevin durant day. Easy money sniper to potentially get back in the lineup. So maybe he misses the game phoenix. But you're gonna need them if you're going to get any type of person lakers clippers or if that took make a run for a championship. You don't do this without the unicorn. Baby you gotta have correct okay. We're just over a month away from the trade deadline. Kyle lowry one of the names. That could be on the move. But chris the biggest name to watch at the trade deadline is yeah me lowery certainly a good when. There's no doubt about it. But i'm gonna go with andre drummond i in cleveland. We know he's sitting out right now. They can move in but with his contract. He makes twenty eight million this year. He won't be easy to deal. You know because the team may feel like they gotta resign or you just got to put together a lot of money to match that salary. And here's the thing. If he's not traded then he could hit the buyout market. And that's what team like brooklyn is waiting for you. Bring andre drummond in. There really helped the defense but he's certainly helps your rebounding which gives you more possessions. And he is a big body. So now i've got deondraye jordan. And andre drummond tha bang up against a guy like joel embiid and other big men may meet in the playoffs so i i'm watching a german. I got beyond. I'm hoping he doesn't get traded. So he winds up in brooklyn on after being bought out for me is blake griffin and as a as a michigander born and raised in a pistons fan. Like do you hate to see stuff like this. But the team both the team in blake griffin dave from breed. He's going to be sideline. he's not gonna even suit up until they figure something out a scenario that best suits them as an organization moving forward and blake griffin as a player so When you look at what he's been able to do over the course of his career we know his his stat line. We know who he is and when we talk about big names there really isn't a bigger name than late ryan fellas on. I'm not mad at shared on. I'm not mad at what you're saying but this is all about bradley. Bill and i know what you're saying chris. Bradley bill is not on the trade market. And i talked to some front office execs. They said no he he. He's being looked at but in all reality. Guess what guys washington. That situation and washington isn't getting any bigger better and the one thing that we're gonna agree on right now. The championship is somewhat wide open with. Anthony davis is kevin durant coming back off of injury and bradley. Bill could be a piece. It may take multi team deal. That could get a desperate team. That's willing to throw the house. Maybe like miami or houston. Is somebody like that. That wants to get a mixed or golden state. That will make a play for radley bill so right now he's not on the market but we know this thing is not gonna last too much longer with bradley build in washington. All right we get tonight. A six game slate in the association including the bucks blazers and pelicans so chris the players. You're most looking forward to watch tonight are believe it or not. I'm going with. James hard on loving watching james harden at point guard his dimes. Obviously still giving you twenty plus points shooting. Three f- running for office to perfection. But here's the deal. They are facing phoenix tonight. And that means. James harden could be matching up with chris paul. I know cairo beyond him a lot too. But these two point guards. They played together in. Houston it didn't in well. We all know that when they split. So i wanna see them go at it. I think heart is making the case that he's the best point guard in the league and i wanna see what's ep three has to say about that. Okay chris. i like where you go on. You like where you going. Because i'm going in that same game. James are devon booker. And when you look at the book man you can book him forgetting buckets. Every time he touches that run averaging about two points over the last four games this instant night out. And he's been doing it all all of his career. We just haven't had the opportunity to watch him gonna watch and so. That's my guide that i'm going to watch the book man. This is all about my. My main man unto coupon i thought he'd be competing for his third. Mvp they lost three straight up there. Milwaukee yes you heard me three straight big toronto up on back to back and this is a hungry raptors team that was playing a mediocre basketball to start but his making a push with a sense of urgency to jump into the playoff race and they have but may god is gonna have to figure some things out he can over the tickets. Some ellsberg two-time. It'd be remiss if we love it. I love it as real world. Ryan was the back in a bit. We got the daytona. Five hundred champion michael mcdowell. He joins us next first. Things first sunday on fox the nascar cup series returns the daytona as chase elliott. Looks defend his win at the fourteenth. Turn racecourse all. The action starts sunday at three eastern right here on fox and the fox sports at speaking of daytona fresh off of crazy daytona five hundred. Finish champion michael mcdowell. Joining us now. Good morning mike lynn. Congratulations thank you guys so much. It's unbelievable i mean you. Just call me a champion. Can you believe.

"There's definitely a disconnect there in it makes things difficult from the media perspective. Certainly but as you mentioned that the road course added certainly a wrinkle to speed we at daytona. I love your idea. I think the more times could be on track. The better run the clash on the oval and then doing another exhibition race on the road. Course why not but talking about now looking at nascar returning next week to raise again on the road course at daytona international speedway. Now you've got the surprise winner of the five hundred michael mcdowell conceivably could make the playoffs for a motorsports. Give me the thirty thousand foot view. Stevie on like where things stand after race one. I mean i know it's early. There's twenty five races the regular season. But now you've got mcdowell position to make the playoffs she's ask are heading back to daytona the road course race that could be another x factor where things stand so. I believe there are ten teams. Start the year. Saying we're gonna win a race now. We hope to we're going to now. I'm not saying guaranteed to in kabul barely. Didn't want it. You know it happens to everybody. But you gotta take your chase. The odds kevin harvick's brackets us joy. Lagana people that have a winning streak and one of them maybe will fall. Short of the majority are gonna win. Race it's gonna be in the playoffs nine. Ten eleven winners nine gallon that list. No offense to mike mcdonough front row. Pretty confident no one had as a guaranteed win for this year. That's why you race because it doesn't matter what we think happens on the racetrack. I believe with the addition of all the road courses. We keep saying how great that is for. Chase elliott will remember from aggie mcdonald and make the playoffs. Stay in the top thirty points. You can build a better season other than the dirt race at bristol which is a huge question mark for everybody now my gall a very talented road course racer can go gobble up points that these road courses. That will help him stay in the top thirty points. I believe you say it could happen. I would be shocked if meghan mcdonald's not in the playoffs i believe he has the ability. I don't believe we're gonna see sixteen winners. What happens last year. we had jimmy johnson. The outside looking in i mean look at. Lowe's teens austin dillon. Can he win a race. He did a year ago last year. Was cole custer kinda wanna raise wasn't in the top fifteen in points so so the twelve to eighteen th placed group that will slowly identify themselves here. Six eight weeks man. I do not wish to be one of those guys in august right because you you basically just took racing for sixteen spots no rain fifteen and by the way the spot that was taken off the board was done by a first time winner was done by someone that nobody had in their brackets and as the seats at the table. Fill up you know. Do i think it's going to affect any hamlin. Kyle busch jason satellite but where. Where does that way stop. Is it ryan blaney. Or does he win a race. no problem. is you know cooler. That william byron is it william byron. Is it alex. Bowman is who isn't going to be fortunate to lane in the first twenty five or twenty six races and now they're points racing and they're less points seats at the table so it was a real win. A shocking win throw another. I mean bubba. Wallace would be another one. We had a chance to possibly win that race. Sunday unfortunately ends in a crash. Now maybe the pressure is on a little bit because not only. Do you have all these road courses coming up in the regular season. You've got the bristol dirt race. It seems to me that this really sort of emphasize the fact that the playoffs this year really could be a little bit different in terms of the field because there are a lot more wildcards than sixteen races. That don't evolve. Dirt road courses superspeedway. Would you got six. Who twenty six hundred sixteen. Pretty quick right like just like that. So bubba wallace. I heard his interview. I loved confidence. i know. He says he's gonna go out or hopes to go out. I'm not sure how he worded it and win. Mulberries i'm not gonna say he won't or he will. What i will say is the same thing. I say to every athlete. That tells me what he's going to do. Good luck show me and that's not route like i. it's the same thing to chase his defending champ. Do i think he can win. But show me you have to win. When i interview chase before the rolex. What did he say. Because what i did last doesn't matter i'm not gonna raise them easier because i'm the champ love that approach i. I learned a lot from a much younger driver about how he approaches. This doesn't surprise me. Him and alan guston are just grinders. Don't believe anything owed to them. And i don't think bubble wall feels that as well. I think he knows he has to go perform but look sundays are hard. I say that all the time. The best quote. I think i got last year. I want to say it was called custom. But i might be right so nobody you know me if this is the raw. I think it was cold but i man. You're the deep end of the pool this year and he's defending the pool in the deep end of the pool. I know which way to swim. The company like the ocean. You know which way the shore is back. There he goes. These guys are so good. He goes if you're in ten or fifteen or twenty or twenty fifth or thirtieth like waiting for a mistake then mistake like they. Every one on sunday is so good at what they do. There are more funded in less funded like i'm not gonna say everyone's equal so maybe you can run inside the top thirty no problem because of funding but then when you get to about twenty fifth okay let me write menu. What's our job every year. We didn't do it because kobe. Let's go to the whiteboard. The whiteboard pretty competent. You didn't have michael dallas are. Your guys is wrong. Whoever you had on the white board. That's how i look at this. We got that whiteboard right outside the studio here by the way so maybe i should invite you back down. We can even though we're one race in. I don't think it's too late to sixteen names up there now. We one locked in freebie. That's that's like what they call that. When you go casino match-play i'll give you twenty five eight. We're going to give you free money so you can lose some.

Chase elliott kevin harvick ryan blaney jimmy johnson william byron alan guston Wallace michael dallas sixteen races aggie mcdonald last year sixteen spots sixteen winners Ten twelve august Sunday twenty five races michael mcdowell alex

"There was a lot of guys who may be good one so it like you said you've had experience with this before your time crew chief you've also had experience win the daytona five hundred. After really lengthy rain delay. This was twenty twenty. One was very similar to dale junior. Was that six hour delay. Which essentially had sunday At again the red flag came out at three twenty eight. pm eastern. They didn't get back on track under green's Nine thirty eastern. What was that like. Do you think for all those teams they are in. does it. Impact the flow of the race did impact what we saw in the final one hundred eighty five laps when they finally went back to green six hours later so i think it did on sunday because the accident happened before the delay. You know you go to a speedway racing you know you're going to have a big wreck but lab fourteen down but that's cold water on your face right. You're like oh my goodness like i kind of knew it was coming but this is like this has changed dramatically. What we thought was going to happen has changed dramatically. And i think that's some of the style of racing you saw i think he saw some pretty organized racing single file racing thing. What happens is when you take forty car field down to. We'll call it thirty. Maybe twenty six twenty eight non damaged cars then we had an oddball wreck with a flat tire with the twenty maybe had a flat leverage. Take out two or three more a very small field of cars in that field of cars or some new teams some smaller funded teams. Who have kind of done day came to daytona to do which was hey. We survived a couple of big ones. We're going to get paid pretty well. That money reinvested and try to have a better year. That's that's the business racing. Congratulations i think that takes a little energy out of the pack. You take a look. Everyone there is not you know. They're not a pack of right some guys around riding around in tenth going. Oh man we're ten. This is grace. Hope nobody doesn't anything silly. And some of the people that are taken out like you know you look at eric. Merola you look. I think there's a lot of exciting around the forty three. I mean there are some names that ryan blaney that you just expect to be pushing some of the moves and i'm going to pick on dale junior denny. Hamlin shot to lead. You know they have this ability to control the rates. And i don't mean that by leading it it's it's it's different than leading it right. It's it's it's they have this or about this confidence about them. The speed about them that kind of uses back through the top five where they're all like lama to follow him in the nets enough. Then it's kinda like crowdfunding mentality right. Well if you put your dollar their output your dollar now now we got the game stop thing all over again everybody believes in denny hamlin so he just stays up front right because because he has an by the way. Why should you believe in the last two three the last four. I mean the guys proven he can do it. So they'll have the same thing as as crew chief. I didn't get it. You know we would be out there leading. I'm like wow just following. i can't explain it you know. They're watching the war texts. Will i have this. Speeding leading daytona. I can't explain it. I can't tell the fans why. Because i know in my heart of hearts of second through tenth round the bottom. They go by the leader but they don't run the bottom. I just don't know why it happens but it happens. And i think to your point and your question it goes all the way back to lap. Fourteen huge accent. Then you sit around for six hours where everybody can look at time scorn and it starts to soak in every driver looks look that guys out of the race this guys out of there and it does change it a little bit different kind of daytona five hundred with that six hour break. That changed things and made things feel a little bit weird generally a weird week. I speed week in daytona. From what of course. Nascar is accustomed to with the pandemic restrictions with the different schedule with limited practice. You were in daytona this week so i just wanted to get your thoughts. You were there up until race day. What was it like being around the speedway this. That's so i went to daytona. Because that's what i do. I went to daytona. 'cause i miss seeing cars on the race track because i'm a race fan and it was the weirdest week i think i've ever been a part of i wasn't allowed not essential. It's not the nbc's half of the year. So i don't have access to the garage. I don't have access to the teams drivers. I watched the one fifties from the grandstand side. It was fun it was great. It was exciting. It's daytona did a great job. I felt like it was organized. New where i could be where i couldn't be in the things like that but it was just a different feel i was. I was happy to see that. We're fans there. But i came home sunday morning. You said i saw the weather. And i was like i wanna see this whole thing and i'm afraid with some travel stuff. I might not be able to. So i came home and watched it from home. It was a just a different feel. I wish it would have been a normal year. So i could've seen what condensing the week. Felt like you know. Because they. The road course. On tuesday qualified on wednesday which the cars were impounded for thursday. No on-track track on friday. You know it was a it was kind of a condensed week. I'm a fan on condensed week. I actually think daytona speed leaks still exists in turning into a big fan of the road of course being the second race. I know what happened because of the pandemic and all the different reasons but maybe one more thing that we've been delivered with a bow that we didn't expect to get as maybe speed weeks was a great idea but you needed more than one marquee event. So maybe we should kick off speed weeks on like a thursday run the daytona five hundred on sunday. And maybe we don't wait till the next saturday. Maybe like a friday or maybe it is friday. I don't know you know. Maybe we moved xfinity series and all the openers after the five hundred maybe the daytona five hundred is the first race after you have the tools in the five hundred cup cars on sunday and then maybe a wednesday xfinity raises saturday sunday cup race on the road course. I don't know maybe you give them snow birds up in new york a reason to come to florida for ten days and it's not just for the great american race. Maybe we throw a road course in. Because you know if. I didn't want to stay down there in just a few days. Trucks and expanding. We'll be on track of the road court so i'm gonna get some value out travel time but it was i. I'm still struggling. You know me. I'm a socialist. Talk more than me. And i'm struggling not being able to walk through the garage of the coffee. My hand seeing all the guys that i that i am fortunate enough to cover and i get the call friends. I i struggle ing b. Your i missed that face to face interaction. There's definitely a disconnect there in it makes things difficult from the media perspective. Certainly but as you mentioned that the road course added certainly a wrinkle to speed we at daytona. I love your idea. I think.

"And i believe that even as great as that move was the ford makes if there are seven toyota's denny hamlin's daytona five hundred 'cause they roll back out there together and even the fords that are coming they probably can side draft with them and keep the length so pitstops a very difficult. And and you you have to cycle through them correctly. I thought they did a great job. He just didn't have enough help. I will say. I thought danny. And i'm gonna i'm a big denny hamlin fan. I watched him closing laps. During one of the best drives i've ever seen when back about daytona five hundred's right like like town wise. He's his in elite category. But i will be critical. I thought he got too greedy towards the end of that race. When the fords were coming. I thought there was a whole to get in and like worth six and he made a move to get another spot got hung out and it took him all the way back to eleventh. Does that make a difference. I don't know but he went from eleven to fifth on the last lap could have gone from i for i don't know that's the only misstep saw danny hamlin make really all day long. He was saying steve that he was surprised. The chevys didn't earlier that he kinda got stalled out around eleven or twelve. He worked his way up to about eighth with five or six laps to go and then he thought like okay. I can make things happen here as he put it in the energy zone. A chevy will pull out chaso pullout austin. Don't wanna pull out with him. And i can make something happen because i'm going for my third straight daytona five hundred win. Did you see that. Were you surprised. The chevys didn't go earlier and waited too long. The last left shop. And i actually think it comes down to a lab car so if you watched the cars who was in it. There was like a three or four car. Pack that was coming from behind. Maybe six or seven seconds back now. The energy works is the leaders. Are one of the top at about forty six tens and those guys are coming in like forty five fifty. What would they much like a wave of water when they catch that pack. They're gonna drive energy through that front pack but normally they catch that they go to the bottom and the guy three cars up. Pull down pull down. Pull down now you have a to wide lane as they catch the pack as silly as this may sound catch lap car in. I don't know who it is but it forces them to run elaine higher. Which now they can't like they kind of got two things. I think early in the pack and he has knows all smashed in and the second thing is a couple of lap car where they just couldn't take the big dive to the bottom and dr two cars in it almost stalled out what i think was the icebreaking run with four five ago and i think that was going to be the run. They were gonna drive the energy. The energy was going to be felt. And danny or some of the other chevrolets would pull down and we'd have this race to the finish. That kind of i think changed it. And i'm within ham. I'm shocked at the six v six seventh-place card didn't try to do something to to go. Obviously they felt like they couldn't or didn't have enough opportunity. Because i don't wanna to win the race and they would have made the run but nobody really took going back to the green flag pitstops so the other thing that i was surprised at is no one broke ranks. So the other thing i will tell you is at greatest kevin harvick and those guys pitted. If i'm behind those ford's oh. I'm coming with them. They there who said what. I don't care what manufacturer told me to come. I'm seeing. I know. Danny hayman's fast but i know how toyota's there are. Yeah we'll man. I'm seeing kevin harvick. Joey logano brad kozlowski. If i'm any of those chevrolets behind those ford's rolling down the backstretch. And i see heaven harvard. Hang a left boy. I'd be on the radio. Get on wall boys. I'm coming with them. And as a crew chief. I would have been instructing dr ramin. Listen to me we are going to pit with whoever the first wave it's if it's denny hamlin in the toyotas come with if it's the fourth you come with them the first wave on payroll if we're one of the back cars you normally can pit and chased so those guys have to be a little conservative not to run each other over getting on pit road if you're ten carling's back on the racetrack. That's huge ten positions. But you could sometimes chase those ten car lengths getting onto pit road and role in with them so i would have pitted with them and then i would have gas only to make sure even if they took two tires would leave with them and that would have been strategy call. I would have had to kind of employ there in the closing latin now. Maybe my phone rang on monday. And they were happy manufacturer somewhere these great. But maybe that's why i'm better on the tv boost following directions. Nate so what would have been that guy. jim campbell. online. One wants to have a word with your listen. You win the race. Jim campbell. Line one congratulated. Thanks mess it up. Who branch two walkout on. But you're right. I mean as a crew chief that the way that race was folding those stevie like it almost you said it like a crash if you wanna be pitting earlier you don't want to be putting later so you knew it was kind of unfolding in single file around the top. Not a lot of wrecks already. Been the big wreck. I think you're right like why wouldn't more teams as especially if you're toyota and again to go back to your point earlier. They're kind of boxing already. They've only got three cars left. The only had five to start with why not do. Essentially you're having to do with the other guys want even dominated the race that point with the number eleven two hundred any hammond. But it's almost like you have to do it right. Yes but i will say play five times over. and if those toyota's leave on denny hamlin's bumper. Are they a little better and they hold the fords up more if we have to go in the toilet miss it. Do they look like geniuses. Like you know what i've learned about raising it's all. It's very easy in the tv booth to tell you what somebody did wrong. And it's even easier on monday. I've been down into the whirlpool. I've been on top of the pit box trying to you. Know it's kinda like studying for your. Sat's you can study all you want. But then at some point you have to sit down they hand you a test and you only have a certain amount of time you have to perform and it's kind of like the sat's can guess what does not really subject. We don't even know what's going to be on the test like it's not a chapter of a book like hey you better study everything from green frank probability to cycle time on to tires to. Oh who you're going to race against o. But just remember all the big names that you normally against iraq so now you're racing against guys that you don't maybe know their their tendencies and don't forget the twenty three who had a loose wheel. He's kind of at the back of the pack. A lap down. There are so many layers to this onion. We're trying to peel away. All i know is denny. Hamlin ran long left. Pit road the main. He had a big gap right if he coulda pulled three teenage with them. Would that have been enough. You know i'd have to go back. I didn't look at pitt cycle times. Dissect it that much because there was so much other stuff to talk about. But it's It was it was interesting thing you look. I asked myself if they don't feel the after that bad enough for the yellow because it was it was severe needed a yellow right away. I mean it was catastrophic. The to up in the air who wins at the line. I'm not a quarter mile to go mcnall kind of had to run. But if you look at it. And he's back there lurking jason's lurk in and there are three wide. You know there's a lot of craziness that can happen in the closing laps. Three car was in that mix as well. There was a lot of guys who may be good one so it like you said you've had experience with this before your time crew chief you've also had experience win the daytona five hundred. After really lengthy rain delay. This.

Jim campbell five kevin harvick eleven danny hamlin jason Danny hayman three fifth jim campbell monday Three car two cars two tires Joey logano brad kozlowski three cars second six laps Nate two things

Ross Chastain goes through McDonald's drive-through during Daytona 500 rain delay

"The rain delay yesterday and i think he got pushed out on social media. Ross chastain had the wherewithal to drive across the street. Mcdonald's outside of the daytona international speedway and ordered launch or. I guess it was dinner. The in for his crew and the reaction that he got from the person behind the drive in window was a shriek of joy when they realized it was ross chastain and he ordered all of his crew mcdonald's and took it back over to the track. Well played ross chastain. Not only take care of spots took care of your crew and jeff and you can't ever do too much for too

"Oh man you're talking big money over the years. My friends public address announcer in that when they're talking about jock sharar raddatz lead. You can remember his name. I can never remember his name. Art go back but you remember. He won the pole. Yeah so politically incorrect. We cannot say we cannot even say it but it you know he's made like thirty dollars off so armee that being said it is time for green flag. I have questions when you agree with the The question that i give you you will give it a green flag in here. This brad gillian. Oh that's you'd never hear that. Would you hear this very said then. If you disagree you will give it a black flag in here. This no the other dairy go. I was the white flyer black. Alan did question everyone. We're going to start this time around with alexis eric's and mc dowell now eligible for the playoffs will make it past the round of sixteen alexis. Oh man yeah. I you know with with only one race in the books. I'm going to have to say black flag against michael mcdowell and obviously we know he's an accomplished superspeedway racer but there's only a few of those in the mix here this season and and obviously if he is now in the round of sixteen but it's gonna be a tall tall order to get out of that. How about yuli. let's lag subjective. I mean first of all you're going to need to collect. A bunch of playoff points with stage wins throughout the year. I don't see them doing that. let's also not forget what the first round of the playoffs is in darlington. Raceway and richmond and the bristol night race and no disrespect to michael mcdowell. That's just simply not where they've been performing their best. What about jeff hammond. I'm going to say green flag. I think right now list. Don't underestimate sometimes the year. We may be looking at and the fact that you know again. How can you drip I feel like some of their shortcomings has been financing things that they haven't been able to get in the past. I think they'll be able to get this point on. I think it's going to help..

"Welcome back fast. Talk doug rice with alexis. Erickson and of course brad gillian. It's always a thrill when we get to talk to a race winner. It's even bigger race winter and just happens to be the daytona five hundred. We're going out of the coca cola. Zero sugar call in line and talk with the winner of the daytona five hundred. He drives the love's travel stops board and he scored his first ever victory. And of course. We're talking about michael mcdowell. Michael i thanks for your time. And do you realize how the world has now changed for you and how you're going to be perceived not just in the garage but by the public in general by the events that took place yesterday no i. I haven't really thought about that. I'm just so thankful to have won a race now in the cup series and into daytona at the daytona five hundred. That's just so amazing. And it's just a humbling experience and yeah is awesome michael over the years. You've really been no stranger to being at the end of these races in contention in in surviving the superspeedway races. A lot of people are calling this an upset victory But as far as i'm concerned you're pretty skilled superspeedway race or a lot of it is about making your own luck. He just talk about your race yesterday. And how you guys were able to survive till the end and had yourself in contention to win. Yeah you know i. I absolutely think that there's you know you need so much to go your way to to win at daytona talladega but at the same time like you said we put ourselves in in position to be in that top five coming into the white flag several times so You know i. i agree with both. I don't feel like it's a fluke. Because i feel like we've we've shown speed and we've we've been in that spot before and we just haven't executed on that last lap but at the same time you know i i don't look at it a as a favorite you know. So it's it's it's a little bit of both but you know for for our team front row motorsports to to win the daytona. Five hundred is is. It's just huge and it's it's miraculous and it's awesome and we're gonna soak every minute in. It's it's like words done. Describe it michael. I always talk about how as the daytona five hundred winner. I it's worth so much more than the prize money. That's paid that day we talked. You're in the playoffs now. Which is huge. You now know right after the first racer and the playoffs. But you're in the all star race in texas not only this year but next year you're forever going to be in the busch clash as long as you're a full time driver. Assuming those qualifying rules don't change this one win here today. Get you so much more. I mean what do you think about the fact that all of these other events now some of which you may have been able to participate in some of which you may have not been able to participate in now. Your name is going to be on that entry blank. Yeah it's incredible it like you said that the perks that come with you know not just winning a race but winning daytona five hundred like you said it's just awesome to know that We'll be in the all star race and not have to You know race our way into the open and in to To to run in the clash. And you know. I've watched the clash every year. And just you know it. You know to be one of the top twenty guys that gets to do that. It's amazing so it's cool. I mean there's no doubt about it and just today going through the whole ceremony process and You know riding your name in the concrete and and the trophies in the watch in the ring and all the things that come with it. It's it's humbling and it's just it's amazing and and i said i can't describe other than how thankful and grateful i am to bob jenkins for giving me a shot in into love's travel stops in our partners. I mean this is a dream come true and and we all know it and we're going to soak it in well. Michael know by now that you've had a chance to recount the last of the race for a lot of different folks but if you could walk through that for our audience here on. Prn that'd be great. What went on from the time you saw the white flag till you came back around and took the checkered flag. And kinda sorta thought you'd won the race. Well you know so much. I mean i felt like coming to the white that i was in a good spot You know working. Really well with brad keselowski and in our fourteen joey and kevin and you know i felt like we are in a very strong position but you never know the lack lap so you you know going into turn one know. Brad started dragging his brakes a little bit. I knew is gonna to up. Run on joey and I got push from the nine and gave bradtha pushing. We had a lot of momentum and took that momentum and you know the next day no brad spinning out to the right and joey spending out to the left and i just i literally went right through the middle and I saw chase elliott coming on my outside and and through a you know a last ditch block just trying to keep them behind and they said caution out and when they said caution out. I thought i was ahead. But you just never know and you know that was the longest you know sixty seconds ever just waiting for nascar to tell us who won the race and you know so much goes through your mind of man. This this might happen i might actually won the daytona five hundred It's i can't explain it. It's it's for me. Just.

"These teams have to have short memories. You go to the daytona. Five hundred it can be elation. Like it was for michael mcdowell or you can be one of the many cars that loaded up a piece of your car and left daytona but you have to forget all that because we're back at daytona in less than a week on the road course albeit. But that's when the real season starts i feel like i would agree. And there's no question that if you're brad. His laskey enjoy lugano teammates racing for the win at the end that stings. If you're chase elliott and you're the runner-up finisher that stings. Because you went down there for one reason and that was to win the daytona five hundred and we can look the last lap crash and make a lot of the fact that it was two teammates. The fact of the matter is brad. Kozlowski made the move to pass. Joey logano for the lead. Joel llegado move to block. Brad kaz laskey and drove across his front bumper and it caused big wreck. If we didn't make that move he was guaranteed to not win the race. Joe is not going to just settle and watch his teammate. Drive on by them. And that's why you get what that is and it doesn't matter whether it's teammates are bitter rivals. You're going to see that at the end. Alexis this time the pinski meeting zoom meeting and not a real i was gonna say there's thirty nine people that left yesterday with broken hearts because they didn't end up in victory lane but i'm not sure anybody bigger than brad has lousy after that incident. You know this is a rice has alluded him for quite some time and he was so close he could taste it and unfortunately again. It just didn't happen for me. It gets out of the car. He spikes his helmet frustration. I'm sure Was just through the roof. And you think about us teammate. Joey logano yes. I'm sure he was just frustrated but he has daytona five hundred victory so You know you gotta feel brad. And i think it's probably getting to that point in his career that he's going okay. I don't have an infinite number of these races and opportunities left to grab that trophy and with each one of them slips by and this may be an is best opportunity on record to have grabbed that trophy and to let it get away. Yeah you spike the trophy you spike the helmet at the end of all of that going on coming up. We had a chance right before this show started the chat with the daytona. Noose found in Bubba Wallace's garage stall, NASCAR says

"Now? Mike Greenberg Bristol with you this morning. And as I said right off the top of the show, I would have loved to have started with any of those today, and we certainly will get to the mall, but we begin with an absolutely despicable story coming from the world of NASCAR. In this developing story, a noose was found in bubba Wallace's. Stall at the NASCAR race in Talladega Alabama yesterday less than two weeks after Wallace led efforts to push NASCAR to ban the confederate flag NASCAR announced the news last night well after the race had been postponed due to inclement weather, and said it was launching an immediate investigation here. was there statement late this afternoon? Nascar was made aware that a noose was found in the garage stall of the forty three eighteen. We are angry and outraged, and cannot state strongly enough. How seriously we take this heinous act! We have launched an immediate investigation and we'll do everything we can to identify the persons responsible and eliminate them from the sport. As we have stated unequivocally, there is no place for racism and NASCAR, and this act only strengthens our resolve to make the sport open and welcoming to all while himself tweeted a statement last night, which read in. In part today's despicable act of racism and hatred leaves me incredibly saddened, and serves as a painful reminder of how much further we have to go as a society and how persistent we must be in the fight against racism. As my mother told me today, they are just trying to scare you. This will not break me. I will not give enor- rely back down. I will continue to proudly stand for what I believe. In Allah Marty Smith is covering this for us in the scene in Talladega. He joined us an hour ago. The News in Bubbas garage stall was actually seen by a member of his team. Darrell Bubba never saw it. He never saw it personally and win. That team members saw it. He alerted NASCAR. And Nascar immediately had a meeting of its senior executive staff, and they made the decision that they were going to remove this person from the sport as quickly and rapidly as possible. This was not a situation where a fan might have meandered in on this because there were no fans in the garage. So what you're looking at is you're looking at team members. You're looking at officials. You're looking at potential security. You're looking at maybe cleaning personnel that have access to these garage areas. Again! That was Marty Smith with US earlier. Lebron James among many who posted messages about this. He tweeted sickening Wallace, my brother! No, you don't stand alone I'm right here with you as well as every other athlete, I just want to continue to say how proud I am of you for continuing to take a stand for change here in America and sports at Nascar. I salute you as well. Well Sprint Cup driver Michael McDowell added. God help us the level of evil. It takes to do something like this is disgusting. This is enraging and heartbreaking all at the same time Dale. EARNHARDT Jr. tweeted simply a hope of a wins it tomorrow again. The race will be run today. It was delayed by weather yesterday, and as I bring Steven A. and Marcus into the conversation here I'll. Repeat that the area in which this was discovered, there were cameras all over it should be. Relatively easy investigation for the NASCAR officials to conduct, and we are standing by for any information live from Talladega Marty Smith will bring us anything as soon as there is any further news with that thought in mind, Stephen. We've not yet had a chance to say good morning to you I. I just want to give you the floor here. What are your feelings and thoughts as we see this story developed from last night? Well I. Mean I think that for me? Personally I'm a little bit different than the kind of sentiments that have been expressed by a lot of people, because obviously you find this reprehensible and disgusting, and it's incredibly sad, and we get all of that but there's a forgive the the figurative smirk that might end up covering my face or draping my face because to me. Me It's just folks displaying the ignorance, and the more they put it on display, the more it enlightens a lot of people in White. America about what Black America has been telling them about for so many years decades spanning centuries for crying out loud. This is not new. This is something that we've known existed for all time. This is something we know we'll continue to exist. And there is no way around it and so this there comes a point in time where you have to accept that reality one of the things that I would encourage everybody to go watch. If you get an opportunity, you can go on Netflix. You can watch that documentary thirteen by EVA do vernay along with others, sensational job of address mass incarceration in the United States, of America one of the things they highlighted. Is that under the Nixon? Administration where you're literally talking about you know White folks that are hippies and you associate them with marijuana and you associate black. Black folks with crack cocaine, and as a result of that will ultimately galvanize folks in your favor, because they'd be scared to death, and you'd be hearing words like law and order ad, nauseam that was in the sixties for crying out loud in two thousand and twenty, and we're hearing the same thing now. You just have to open your eyes. You have to pay attention to the parallels you have to. You have to pay attention to the correspondence. That's taking place right before your very eyes throughout history, we have had people that have been adroit at light laying low. Controlling the narrative, manipulating the narrative switching things to their favor, all in an effort to maintain or to retain power. It's something to kind of thing that has been taking place in. Usually they've been incredibly skilled at remaining in the dark and saying it's then it's not us, it's them. It's not us well guess what are coming to light more and more in this day and age I find that a cause for celebration, not a 'cause. You know to be saddened by anything. The I find these to be. Beautiful tops as difficult as it may be the fact that I nation appears to be becoming more enlightened than ever before and ultimately as a result. We're coming together. I find that to be a huge plus not a minus. If the ignorance has to show itself, and if the ignore, it has to showcase themselves in order for this to happen coming out of the dock to me. That's of course was celebration Marcus. Stephen. That's what I alluded to earlier man just come on out. Show us who you are, so we know how to deal with you and everybody. That's four. Right knows how to deal with you. Look listen, this is. There has been. We've been having this conversation for a long time. I mean we had this conversation we had. This conversation went capped kneeled about police brutality. We talked about racing all of them and man you. You look if you look around and social. There were people literally Oh twitter last night. Say A BUBBLE! Did this for attention? What what are you talking about like? It's not. It's not unfathomable that someone could do that. We sold Jesse's me. Make reference to that because people can conjure up things to create narratives to make people overreact. That's why saying earlier. Estimate I'm not doing this emotional. Rollercoaster I'm getting off of it right like I'm nuts and bolts to was going on. There is progress that needs to be made in this country I'm focusing on that progress that needs to be made. That's what bubble wireless is focused in on a by making his statements in Nascar. That's a lot of athletes are focused on a lot of people in society in general of focused on making sure that we draw a line between racist people and people that one good for everybody. That's the bottom line. Look for as much as this is egregious and the things that have transpired for low type. I grew up in the south light. It's not. An uncommon for me to see racist people are know what it looks like or even even be surprised or shocked about certain things that tend to happen. The bottom line is this. I'm often emotional roller coaster like if you racist just be that come out publicly and be that enlist separate that and you be a part of the minority port society that we want to get to, and we think we already are at so all of that being said I'm with Steve Day like in this bringing a lot of people to the light, and the hateful ones are fighting their battle because they see slipping away. Score you're not GonNa hear me say this very very often, but I wanNA give major major kudos to a Lotta. White folks out there in America because if it wasn't for them, protesting and marching with black individuals if it wasn't for them, you know engaging in the kind of of of you know resistance to whatever level of oppression we as black people have been feeling this nation I. Don't think some of these folks will. will be coming out I. mean listen the back. In the day. They used to wear the sheets and used to cover the identity and their faces that we didn't know who the hell they were by virtue of that now. Some black people, a lot of black people will tell you they exist in corporate America. They could be the very people that you're working for the very people that you're talking to I happen to be. Be Blessed we happen to be blessed to not certainly not have that at this company is because we've seen the actions on the part of our executives. And what have you over continuous basis? Elevated level of sensitivity that this place has shown throughout the years deserves to be commended. There's always work to do. There is no perfect place. Make no about it, but I'm incredibly proud to be a part of the Walt Disney and And specifically the ESPN family in that regard having set all of that I'm in the minority, because the reality is vast people, there's a vast number of people of African. American descent in the United States of America that feel subjugated I wouldn't go so far as to say enslaved, but feel subjugated by bosses in corporate America people that say all the right things when the cameras are rolling, but behind the scenes they engage. Eight your and the conduct. Subjugation that they devote their voiceless. They don't have a voice in that regard, green. Marcus knows exactly what I'm talking about. And so because of that because of these times that we're living, what we're seeing is a populous within the United States of America that sees the dramatic shift, and there's so appalled, and and put and taken aback by what they see transpiring that they can't hide their vitriol. They're coming out of the dock because they're being forced out of the dog. We as black people. People have to appreciate the fact that couldn't happen without a vast number of white individuals in our society standing with us and saying you know what we see where the hell you coming from. If we didn't see it before we see it now, and we're with you, so you have that other segment of the population saying wait a minute we lose some of our own here. Some of our own alternative guests and the poor in this noxious. We gotTA speak up and as a result. Of the dock again I find that a cause for celebration doesn't bother me at all. If we wore, we wore. Let's get it on. I liked that. I want to leave it there for the moment again. Marty Smith is standing by Talladega. If there is any further information on the investigation, we will have it for you immediately, meanwhile, Steven as going to stay with us here for a few more minutes, and we'll get some football conversation as we go his feelings about the Dallas, cowboys have been well documented. This should be a very big day in Dallas. We will talk about it and why and then Lebron and other NBA players have until Wednesday to decide whether or not they're going to play. What should we expect? Woge will answer that question as we continue this out. GET THEM ON ESPN. GEICO. GETS YOU ACCESS TO LICENSED AGENTS? Twenty four

"Didn't get a lot of practice in so my cave. You want me to suck this. I'm going to need to like be able to practice and So I started calling all the manufacturers that make us different rigs but we were two weeks behind. Because you know we we just behind instead of people that already dot up all their inventory. How the Larson's home? The everybody in their brother had bought out everybody systems and so. I couldn't really find anything could find anything. Turn key race engineer at front road. He had already ordered some pedals wheels for himself and he had a computer at his house. And he's like well just dinner. Sow Sledge's welded chassis. And we'll see we'll just do it ourselves and All easier said than done but yeah the front row is my my thirty four crew. Did build a chassis and We got everything set up and right before everything got shut down. We were able to get to my house and finished building a house worth realign the glitches and things like that but by Friday of last week I had one set of her house and was able to practice a little bit more and we ran. Texas stood in. Now that I've had more time hopefully run better bristol than I did it Texas so but yeah really thankful that they're able to do that and one of my house mall shut up and so however long. I'm stuck here I'll be able to drive another funny thing that you tweeted was when it came to Texas. You said well if I flip virtually it won't hurt and I appreciate it the humor in that but it made me think. Obviously that was a moment. Many people will always remember. Is it something that fans still ask you about? Oh yeah all the time. Yeah I mean it's for sure it's something that fans remember and Yeah it's just one of those moments that I think that you know I certainly won't forget and and most people that watch during that time or were there don't and you know it doesn't bother me either. It's not like there's like two sides of it is one is it doesn't make. It's not embarrassing for you know. It's not something that I'm like. I don't WanNa talk about because if you raise long enough you're gonNA crash in a normal. You don't do it by yourself but it happens and the other side of it is that you know to me to be able to walk away from it and to still be here whatever. It is thirteen years racing. doesn't define my career either right like if I'd be everybody's highlight but I lost thirteen years after that off of being able to do my job well and get the most out of whatever situation I've been in so doesn't like haunt me or or make me feel embarrassed about it or or I don't WanNa talk about it right. Yeah it's good. You just take it in stride right. Yeah Yeah all right Michael. Let me get you out of here. One last question circling back around to our real racing when we get back on track whenever that may be do you know when I don't I wish I did. In my optimism. Optimism balloon has been popped really. Yeah so when we get back to racing when you go from competing for a couple of weeks competing for a month and then you have an unexpected hiatus. Do you think you'll have like some rust to knock off or will it just be like kind of coming out of the off season? What what do you expect? The feeling will be like when we go back racing after an unexpected and an undetermined amount of time. Unlike where when you have an off weekend or you have off season. You know you can prepare you know when you're going to be racing again. How different will it be to jump back in a car after something like this? Well I want to answer that question. Nearly so our sport definitely has a lot of confidence in him as a big equation and that happens throughout the season. Good race last. Wants to change all those all those things get better salts. Rust Call Rust. I think that we've lost along with them. That feel that you want to build up on those things asked Palestine and go into the off season and you start fresh. But I don't think you'll be rusty. I mean we we go the you know the entire off season and are able to to turn on the light switch and go so. I don't feel like it will be a lot of just getting the skewed that there's a lot of CEO and just not just communication and just flow of practice and everybody will have to work through that again. You know but yeah yeah same for everybody and so we'll see. Who Does the best? It's GONNA be interesting isn't it? We're all going to be Ready to go back racing and it's just going to be interesting when we finally get to do it. Absolutely well Michael. I appreciate the time today. I've enjoyed our chat and good luck with the virtual learning and I hope everybody stays station. Thank you all right as I wrap up this episode. "You know making sure that those guys understand that. Hey we get you want this for you and your group but this time to fix the other half of the field young and so I always try to make sure that there's a little bit about about. Do you think. Overall the sport is good about something like that. I've heard that a few times when you talk to guys on the other side of the garage so to speak. Are you start going further down the leaderboard? You know they say the same things you know. Sometimes people need to remember that we have to look at not. Just what's good for the bigger guys? Or what their opinion is. But you have to remember the guys that are doing it differently. Do you like Nascar better over the years at understanding and listening to those folks absolutely. I think it's changed tremendously. Yeah I think just the dialogue in general is way more open now than it's ever been and that's been a process that's happened over the last four or five years and you know some of it was forced early on West. Rta and some of those things that kind of squash month insane and driver councils and all that stuff. But I feel like now. It's more of a working relationship. Then it's ever band and there's a lot of communication happens and it's pretty good on all those fronts and yeah. I think that you know when I first got there is kind of like. Hey you don't talk and don't say anything was the information that I got now. It's different more lot more dialogue happening for sure. Yeah one more thing before switched some. Ira Sing Talk. Because I'm very curious. Get your thoughts on that is I. Wanted to ask kind of another broad question. You of course have done open-wheel Grand Dam Arca a little bit of everything in Nascar. What is your favorite Carter? Dr Or maybe you're the fate of one of your most favorite races that you've gotten to compete in. Yeah I would say in two thousand five. I got to do a few champ car. Indycar races and Yeah do those cars and in that time in that era. Were just awesome you. They were fire breathing. Dragons young close to a thousand horsepower and turn with charged and no track. Trolling Electron IX. That goes has ship but it wasn't a paddle. And so yeah. So those were the purest fastest coolest thing I've ever driven for sure and I guess a couple of race in Australia. Surfers Paradise and kind of a fun fact He. I've made my gave you the same weekend that that will power. Willpower had a pretty successful after that. I think I'd beat You Buy yes. We just do that those couple of weeks that I got to do. The INDYCAR deals a lot of fun. I raised Mexico. City in Indycar in a prototype are one the prototype operation than randy which was a cool weekend. So that's probably long memories and appear driving aspect of an indycar without much. Power was a lot of fun. Fire breathing dragons. I believe that's unique all right so let me get your thoughts here on some. Ira sing stuff. I know you've kind of been thrust into the fire as I'm sure many others right now that this has come up. Did you have any experience before like had you ever run? I racing before. Yes Sir I have and I. I wouldn't say I have a lot of experience but I have a decent amount. It was a long time ago so when I first got into Nascar you know being a you know road race open-wheel Sports Car Guy. I didn't know any of the tracks. Didn't know ovals at all I hadn't been to any short-track hadn't done any of that so I got into. You know just whatever we want to call it. Online racing virtual racing and there is I racing came on the scene maybe maybe a year or two after I I started but I you know so I had a lot of time. That was before kids and everything else I had to set up at my house and I would play at five or six hours a day but that was twelve years ago right so A law has changed since then and obviously Irene since a tremendous job I answer super impressed with the fact that they have on vehicles in your son people on a really great job with it boom it. You know. It's something that is not easy to get the speed really quickly and the level that were turned to against the guys. We're trying to do with say yes. So it's definitely been a challenge in you know it's a little bit of a mix like. I'm excited that I have something to do and Cerez and I'm excited that we get some exposure for sponsors and our sport and keeping Santa Getting all. I think it's really good stuff. But the other side of it is is a tremendous time commitment to be good at it and people talk about well the level playing field and you everybody has the same color in one hundred percent true but at the same time the guys that are successful right now the guys that have like thousands of races and enduring it consistently for love or secure. So there's these little nuances to it that make it a challenge. Just like him. It'd be a challenge if you're were a virtual racer in the Ashley had to go unload at Bristol for the first time and drive a real car so it's definitely something to put a lot of time to which allergy to do away from it does have a family her long things happening. You have a lot of commitments as a driver already phone shop and climb out for interview Ian Sponsorship Obligations To. He'll keep playing for four or five hours. Be really responsible were now. It's easier to do because we're stuck here. The sponsor aspect is really really interesting because especially with those races being picked up by Fox. It still away for the sport and for the sponsors to get exposure and I think was really unique is At front row you guys have been able to bring on sponsors and I believe if my understanding is correct. You're actually bringing on a sponsor for Bristol as we talk this weekend. The Bristol race is that correct well so think that it is unique in. We've had love's travel stops the car who these folks two weeks. Obviously there are private sponsors majority of the season when you wanted to make sure that we could give them as much as exposures can't especially with Hanging anything going on the release fat but only been working on Schuch Lewis with Celsius over the last few months in something that hopefully will turn out just to virtual awesome but a real sponsor which were working really close later date but says exciting. New Boys Bristol into yet suggest during a news new sponsor into the sport and to have a survey more than anything. It's just it's a great starting point. It's an opportunity for the And be able to get exposure and help build their brand built the product using the teen years. And so it's something. I've really worked hard on because of such a big supporter. What they're already doing it healthy lifestyle just living fit and take care of yourself in having energy and that focus so to really good brand for us to be partnered with and we're excited to you. The car this weekend at Bristol super excited that I've locked into the race. He's to real tough on the qualifying. Yeah well hopefully will continue to grow this relationship and partnership poured a few more things for you. Michael one of the things again that stood out with this whole. Ira Sing thing. Is You posted on twitter? That front row actually made you your own rig right because you weren't able to get one. How did the how did that go? What goes into making a rig. Look yeah a lot of work. Yes Obliquely the whole story. So you know the the team. Coming up Auditing foes Cosette. Like this happen. He needed the police. I'm like yeah sure looked of familiar. Regan will be really go grab. It wasn't that easy. We borrow David yellows on rig the first week and I just went for his shall at his shop sewing basically got zero practice year. Just because of the fact that they're shoplift shutdown just like At the time it wasn't mandatory but they were already shut down and so I had to have somebody come. Let me in you know. Do all those things and I had to have somebody babysitting me the whole time. So it was you know. I just.

"Over there in the McDowell household. How are you spending your time now? Yeah we're good I mean it's it's challenges the probably the the homeschooling the schooling virtual schooling. Whatever you WANNA call it is probably the hardest just because we have three kids that are actively doing it from eighteen. Whatever you WANNA call in. They have eating conferencing and they have you know all these different things going on. And so there's a lot of noise and there's a lot of things happening am all at once. That part's figures. Challenging was just through all the school union coming to organize all the conferences and virtual chance and setting up. I feel like an IT person here lately you sound everybody connected and getting everything functioning and being able to turn in assignments and obviously it's a cross us to for the rules well because this is the first time they've had to do it so we've been lots of hiccups in lots of trying patient times. I it's funny you bring that up because I have a much younger sister who is also doing the virtual learnings. I was GONNA ask just kind of how that's gotta be so weird for everybody. I can't imagine it's one of those things where it's like. Oh parents are suddenly remembering how much they don't know it's been a process for sure. Well again I appreciate you taking the time. I'm sure that the first four races at this point probably feel like they were a year ago. Probably feels like it was many many moons ago. Yeah definitely I mean. Even though it's only been a couple weeks feel feels like it's in a really long time. Does anything stand out from those four races? Michael was we look back real quick as we look back at Daytona. Fontana Phoenix. Does anything. Stand out from your team. You guys have going on over at front row kind of how you started the season. I think that you know. Probably the thing. That steamboat racing. Always your last one right. You know. It's one that matters. So Phoenix was good as far as building and build some confidence and get back on track and so we were excited about just trying to create that momentum and and keep the moment going that we have. Daytona was okay. Went fine got a decent result but not the result we wanted and then Vegas. We had a mechanical failure in kind of all starting to spiral a little bit downhill and then being able to have a little bit of a steady nice round. Get a good finish and kind of build off of that so here we we were ready to land and silent about it and obviously just like everybody. We're adjusting to our new normal now phoenix. Of course there was a lot of excitement over what was old is new again when it comes to the package. How did that feel from your perspective kind of going back to something that was similar to what we had a few years ago in two thousand eighteen yeah? I thought the racing was getting. I thought the Taller fof was in. There was more side-by-side racing and I thought that the you know the truck did a good job with the PJ one and felt like it had its place and it worked well and thought the racing trout kilos was pretty good. We had a little baby issue early on in fights crackle way back to get back on the left and the lucky dog spot and we were able to do that. Where in the past him? You just get stuck behind people and you couldn't pass and you could really Make moves and we were able to come back to room. Get Lucky dog in against you'll get back on task cars at the end so there is more positive more opportunity for sure definitely seemed like it was a good direction for our the sport to go as they tried to kind of reevaluate the short tracks and the road courses. Do you think that they kind of hit on it and and went in a direction? Yeah absolutely you don't think the proof is in you just the race that we had at Phoenix and obviously we'll have more to kind of compare and judge off but yeah I mean I'm very confident. This is the right direction for both. Of course Jansher retracts. It definitely will produce a better show than what we had at. Those places like front row obviously has a little bit of a different. Look this year with John. Hunter now being full-time and the truck program with todd both those guys are young near the veteran. Now of the program. Does that seem? We're to you. Do you like being in that position to be able to help the younger drivers if they come to you. You know part of my kind of my racing history and background was always been intervening coaching. And and that's kind of how I was able to get through the first few levels of motorsports early on so that's kind of ingrained in me working at the ball and run school as an instructor and then helping guys that were younger than me. Come up through the different series so that part is fun. I enjoy it. You know right now. I'm not doing a whole lot is probably the reverse. It's the young is trying to teach me how I race and so yeah I'm on the opposite side of experience right now. Yeah before we're done talking. I'm definitely wanted to throw some stuff your way in general though when when you hear veteran when people consider you like me consider you a veteran when you think about how you've made starts in the cup series for the past thirteen years I mean. Does that stand out. Does that feel weird? Does it feel like you've been around that long Yes and no so definitely definitely have been around that long and there's moments that feel like that but you know a lot of those. I caught four or five. Years was starting parts just trying to hang on for dear life outdoing forces at Containing for you really pointing putting in full seasons swatted. Those were per shells. Sydell feel like the last five years or maybe it's been more. Maybe it's been six whenever I went full time with L. Afar since it's felt more like you know real and full-time experience but all those races before that still played a part in that you're able to learn a lot and and probably more than anything just mental innocent work that game. You're just putting a lot into it. Truly make the most of every moment knowing that for a long time. I didn't even have a shot at those. So at this point as we're talking with racing on hiatus your number is kind of a nice Round full number. It's three hundred and twenty five in the Cup series. Yeah what would you say has been your biggest accomplishment or maybe your best highlight so far in the cup series. I mean my island. Having three run on twenty-five START I mean I hate to say that but if you if you could zoom out and look at my whole journey it's been extremely difficult one to stay in the sport and so to me are the biggest accomplishment in regards to the fact that I'm still here and still competing and I'm in a better situation now than I've ever been. It's continuing.
