"So much more unmanned TV so the ones that you didn't hear. I loved Denver Wilson's with Houston. That was amazing. I still will go and YouTube that shouldn't watch it. It's great. Deborah Wilson Deborah Wilson's Oprah also also fantastic. I mean, I got to say the other thing I saw it in rehab was after I was will sasso's and I forgot who he did it with, but the making of the song you are the love of my life is one of my favorite things. Alex borstein. And the two of them are a, both talented singers. Yes. But also just really funny people. Really funny. And they played fictional singers with some one hit one. They had a song. There was also it was kind of behind the music on one song and literally the only lyric in the song in this duet of these two people was you are the love of my life. You are the love of my life. And it was like, but it went on forever with just that. I thought that was hilarious. And Alex borstein also an amazing actress. She's the greatest. All of them. Moe Collins. Stephanie weird. Stephanie weird. Nicole Sullivan. Barrels. They were like, okay. Jordan Peele. And the list goes on..

"But also we've never cared about the backdrop of showbiz to us. It's always been about the relationships of the characters and the awkwardness of life. Yeah. Well, I know you I mean, one thing that I bonded with Michael over early was we are both giant fans of cringe comedy of things that make us cringe and or any situation. Like we will recount stories all the time of times when either we made somebody cringe or better, we were fortunate enough to be near some thinking. Well, that's something that Michael we bonded over that too is like the joke that fails in front of people. Would you tell that joke? There's nothing better to me than a swing and a miss. Yes. I've told the joke where it's just crickets and then three seconds of crickets and then you hear someone go, oh my God. That's the response. You're like, yes. Well, to me, I always think this is horrible right now, but my Friends are going to love it when I tell them how badly I wiped out. Yeah. I shouldn't joke. You have a joke in your eyes very much like a joke. I did in real life. So it's better in your act, but in my real life there was a dude we were at a preschool party, just on my own, I didn't have kids yet. No I'm kidding. But with my kids. This is a fan. But I was there. And there was one dad who kept show like, I guess his daughter was like a ballerina and was like, which is a weird thing. Limber for exactly. For a dad to do. It looks like moms to show pictures of their kid. This guy was really on and on about his daughter. Look at this, look at this. And I looked at it and I'm used to being in a comedy room and not around civilians. No rules. No walls and no one's there. And so they're passing look at her right here. Look at her he's like sort of obligatory. Yeah, she could get she seems gettable. And it really died. It died such an extent that later my wife heard about it from other things and I was told they didn't have me back. Because it's like not everybody has does what you do for a living. A lot of people live normal lives. They're not comedy writers searching desperately for comedy. Everywhere in every situation desperately for the love their father never gave them? They just tell everyone. Like the rest of us feel numb to everything..

"Hey, welcome back if we were away. Okay, here's the thing. Our advertiser just I don't know whether we put it in anything there. We may not have. But I could just put Bud Light in it. I don't know. I can't not pee in an hour. I don't know. Let's talk about prostates. Sure, we're about the same thing. I think we are about the same age. I never need an alarm clock anymore. That is the one thing. I don't know if you're dealing with this at all. Maybe you're more fit in your prostate is in better shape. But I have to say like it's about fitness. I think your prostate just you could be the most. You could be an Olympic athlete, which I am. Certainly in the sarcasm Olympics. But I don't know if it could be, but as a board member of a prostate cancer. I don't want to lady Nelson. Both of our dead side of it. So there you go. There you go. I mean, I was actually at a party recently with some people in my own age, which is unusual. That's weird. I know. And good for you, by the way. Yeah, it was gross. And this change. And we really did get I found myself and with no irony at all bragging that I think this came out of my mouth. Yeah, last night I had the greatest night sleep. I only got up once to pay. I was hoping that you were going to say this came out of my mouth. P, because my prostate is so out of control, I piss out of both my mouth and my face. This is why I that's free for the Modern Family room. This is why this is why I completely tanked my mad TV audition. You pee out of your nips. So, you know, look, there's a lot of stuff. You'll be back and there's a lot of stuff we can talk about in between your ten glorious years at mad TV and where you are now. I know you've directed every single show on television, but I want to hear about nobody's, which is your current, incredibly funny show on TV Land. That you direct and showrun and star in? And right. All of these things. I act in it and I write on it in a direct it. And yes, I produce it along with a bunch of other old friends who write and act and produce on it as well. It's a kind of a weird but in private family thing. But in private, you said it's all me. So I just like during the break. Nobody's buying Michael McDonald. Yeah, but you guys we were rolling. I'm Michael McDonald joint. No, it's truly it is like a dream scenario where we've all been around for a while. People that you've known for a long time, that you think are funny and like, and you get to make a TV show with, and that is what it is. And Melissa McCarthy and Ben falconer are involved. They executive produce, Ben directed the pilot and both ban and Melissa in addition to producing act on it as well, and many episodes. And we all knew each other from the groundlings. And they were the ones who asked me to come on board and it's been truly a blast. In the three main nobodies are Hugh.

"And I was in a room with them on 28 or something. Kevin find someone, by the way, for me. I have my lunches with him and he's like a mentor to me. Yeah. But they're laughing and they're like, wow, and they recommended me to somebody. And it's like, wow, that it's good. Okay. Well, I'm going to ask you a question now. How did mad TV come about? How did your at the how long are you at the groundlings before like you start to work outside of the groundlings? I had been at it, I don't know, I got into the growlings. I got into the groundlings the weekend of the LA riots. 1992. Was that why they rioted? Apparently. They did not care. They were upset about Rodney King's beating and also my admission into the groundlings. No McDonald's no peace. I remember that. So I had a rough time. I couldn't get I would do shows at the groundings that we get decent write ups in the paper or whatever. But I couldn't get an agent I couldn't get work at all. And I so you didn't have any. I couldn't everyone else. Everyone else I knew had agents managers, whatever. I couldn't get any traction anywhere. And then I started writing really shitty Roger Corman movies. Oh, you worked in that in that camp. Yeah. I had a meeting with him when I first came out here too. That's amazing. Yeah. Because he held out so many people. But I beg to differ with the portrayal of him as the Sarah Bernhardt of whatever. Oh, really? Yeah. He was like, okay, go. No. He was no saint. Blade and hire me. Yeah. But I will say, it was an opportunity in that if you wanted to work for free more or less, you could learn. And so that was kind of my but I thought, oh, I'll never be an actor because it's just not happening. Maybe I'll be a writer director. And so I wrote and directed a bunch of shitty movies. We have to have a film festival all night. And then the minute I decided I wouldn't be an actor and dedicate myself to being a writer director, that's when acting where it came at me like a train and the lesson is give up. But I swear to God, I tried and tried and tried and nothing happened, and then when I stopped trying then it happened. Desperation is not sexy and in any way. Any time you hear a chick that's like, I've just been looking for a boyfriend looking for stop fucking looking for me. Stop it. It's true. I still live your fucking life in this life will happen. It is, when I don't give a shit, you give off a vibe that it's something about it that it's like the other person wants to win you. Yeah. It's like, but to this day, if you asked me to go in tomorrow for an audition for something, I would probably fuck it up. The minute I have to audition for something or prove myself in that way. It's probably DNA shit. I don't know, but now it doesn't matter. I was going to offer you a part of my own family, but I guess I can't now because of that. No, you can offer it. Offer only. Oh, your honor. Now, that's what you're thinking. So what happened after, so what was the thing once you stopped giving your shit? I got an audition for mad TV and SNL the same week. Wow. Oh my God. And I should add, I'm sorry, a sitcom for a network, which I'd never been offered a series regular potential, I should say..

Welcome to doing it with Danny and Jenny. Yes, I'm Danny. I'm Jenny. This is our third podcast. This is episode three. This is it. Season one, well, it would be one O three in TV parlance, I believe. I believe that's what it's called. Season one at three. I think it's off to a really good start so far. So far, we're here. We've got Dewey and birdie here, guy. Hey, and just for those of you who have listened to the first two, Bertie is not farting. Well, don't say it. Don't say it. Okay. Because once you say it, it's all over. Yeah. It's all over. It's all gonna be over, but we have a guest today. Who? By the way, it's a big, this is like, those of you listening, this is the one you'll be saying to your friends. Listen to it when they had the first guess. The star power. The house right now is off. It's a chart. The charts. The paparazzi are in front of my house right now. Yeah. Well, Jenny, would you like to introduce the friend? I can't say friend of the pod because that's what the podcast. He's a friend of us. He's ours. He's our friend. He's our special friend. Actor, producer writer. Does he direct at all? He directs. Yeah, he's a director. He's a drinker. He's a big smoker. Smoker. Yeah. He's an asshole. Yes..

"The running of the All Star race in Texas. This is NASCAR live Race Day. Now back to Woody came approaching the start of the 37th NASCAR All Star race at Texas Motor Speedway, where it is very hot. Steve Post his track side with the Daytona 500 winner. Yeah, That's Michael McDonald. He is the winner of the Daytona 500. He is looking forward to the All Star race here tonight. As he is set to go. Michael will start in the 11 spot loves travel spot the bright yellow colors on the Ford Mustang. Michael an All Star here after winning the Daytona 500 that Daytona 500 things still paying off pretty well for, isn't it? Yeah, it's paying off. Great. I mean, this is you know my first time in the All Star race and To get to watch. The open was was fun, you know, And you didn't feel that pressure of having a race your way in, but definitely starting to feel the pressure now of racing for a million dollars and and hopefully this love's travel stop Ford Mustangs fast and we'll have a shot at it. But But, yeah, it's exciting. The have these perks of winning the Daytona 500 knowing that you get to participate in cool events like this, the running the All Star races. It's pretty awesome. So we're excited for tonight. What did you see in the open race? What types of things? Did you did You notice about the racetrack at this point? Yeah. I mean, obviously, it's hot and slick. And, you know, the guys are lifting quite a bit. Even with this new package with, you know, the reduce horsepower So Yeah, I think as a night as it cools off a little bit, you know, you'll have a lot more throttle time. But the P J one looked like it started to come in pretty good there towards the end and see like it was the dominant line. So you have options and and that's always good. And, um, but I think that watching it Definitely showed that these cars right now are still slipping and sliding around and pretty slick. We'll see what happens. Best of luck, Michael. Thank you Appreciate it. There we go. Michael McDonnell at Daytona 500 champion and Kim Kun, you're with another champion of the Great American race, and that would be Kevin Harvick. We'll see if we can track him down. Get a word with him. It looks like he might be trying to find some shade. It's a hot one out here, Kevin. Looking at what you saw during the open. What do you expect for tonight's race? When was that on? You watched it. Come on. Oh, I was just kidding. Um, yeah, in track position You want to be in the front and looks like tires don't mean a whole lot. I think that'll probably be more of the case as the sun goes down, so Hopefully, our Busch light Ford Mustang is running fast and get some track position and see how it goes. Good luck. Thanks. That's Kevin Harvick. He will take the green flag in the 12th position this evening. Steve Post were dodging drivers getting in and out of that. I think everyone is trying to keep cool. That's for sure. Kurt Busch taking a big gulp of water down here, Kurt, this heat preparation for it. And this slippery racetrack. Just what does this mean as a race car driver ready to go for a million dollars here tonight? It was kind of gas it up and go. There's not much to think about with the conditions. That's where the team is already prepared. The best way that they can for it looked like the race settled in towards the second half. With the heat cycles on the tires and the spray getting a bit more activated. So for us we're all out there for a million bucks. I hope you're in the right place right time to dodge if any of the wrecks happen. And then just ultimately do our job through the stages to give their best track position and starting position for stage five. You don't want a teammate in the open. You want everybody in the All Star race. We understand that you had a teammate in the open who went from the back to the front. What types of things does that bring to you guys with a little bit more insight into what you're going to face here now. It was great to get Chastain feedback and the way he raised from the back to the front and just just see his confidence keep continuing to boost Take a lot of pride and helping the kid out and it's great seamen and all star race and have a chance to go for it said he's racing with his heroes. I think you're one of those guys in that knee. Maybe I mean, I'll call myself a teammate to Ross. But, yeah, it's really need to see his enthusiasm. You're a hero. That's for sure. Kurt Busch ready to roll here today he will start in the 13th spot, Woody Okay, Steve. Thanks a lot. An All Star winner back in 2010 and Kurt is making his 20th All Star appearance tonight. That has come with six different teams. We'll be back with more from Texas next. There once who set out on a great quest to find the perfect Coca Cola flavors at his family's request. So he went into a convenience store and grab the Coke, cherry, Vanilla Coke, cherry.

Nearly all states expanded early voting opportunities and mail or absentee ballots. The number of ballots cast already is close to half of the total votes recorded in 2016 early vote. Expert Michael McDonald, the University of Florida says that in Texas, the tally is already more than 80% of the total vote in the last presidential election in states that released the information, Democratic voters have run up a big lead in mail ballots. But in Florida and other key states Republicans air now outpacing Democrats and in person early voting, MacDonald says the U. S is on a pace to see at least 150 million votes cast in a 65% turnout.

Absentee-Ballot Expansion Promotes Early Voting This Year

"Early than ever before, way more at 2.5 weeks before Election Day, Some states are already up to a third of their total turnouts from 2016. That's being driven by absentee ballot expansion all over the country because of the pandemic and a surge of in person early voting, But not everything has gone smoothly. We've seen long lines in Georgia and Texas and tens of thousands of mistakes with mail ballots. Joining us now to talk about all of this is NPR's Miles parks who covers voting. Hey, miles high there. So just how big has the early voting this year? It's been huge, more than 17. Million people have voted already, according to this database compiled by University of Florida professor Michael McDonald, and it's hard to really overstate how unprecedented that is. You know, it's about five times as many people who had voted at the same time in the 2016 cycle. Target smart. This data firm that works with Democrats has done some analysis on the initial numbers has been significantly more Democrats than Republicans, which isn't that surprising when you consider you know the sort of rhetoric President Trump specifically is used about vote by mail, But there are also some other interesting trends. You know, we're seeing more than seven times as many African American voters at this point now, as opposed to 2016 Which seems to be driven by this increase in early voting access in states with higher black populations like North Carolina, Georgia and Virginia. That's interesting. Well, we have been seeing pictures of these long lines at many of these early polling places. Can you talk about how smoothly the vote has been going so far? Yeah, There's clearly been some hiccups with in person and with vote by mail options, it seems like computer problems have contributed to a lot of the in person delays that people have seen photos off in Georgia. The database used to check people in was slowed down because of all of this traffic on the website. There were similar stories in Texas Houston Public Media's Elizabeth Tro Vel spoke to a voter named Renee, who spent nearly four hours in line going to three different precincts. I cry. I frankly think it's a form of voter suppression. There's no way there should be a glitch on the first day of early voting. No way and then you're gonna tell me I gotta one place and they say it's the printer. Come over here. This is the printer. Then they said the main system I've just never seen anything like this ever. You know this is a tough problem for election officials. Obviously, no one should have to wait that long to vote. But we also knew the pandemic, combined with potentially historic turnout would be in some problems for in person. Voting and lines do usually get better, I should say after the first couple days of early voting the wait times in Gwinnett County, Georgia, for instance, which was showing waits at 234 hours earlier this week on its online tracker today, when you look it was mostly under an hour. Well, what about voting by mail? I mean, a lot of people have been worried about the post office handling so many ballots are those concerns justified so far. Yeah, I mean, we've seen a lot of administrative errors, reports of administrative errors with the absentee balloting. Just yesterday in Pennsylvania, Allegheny County announced that 28,000 voters got mailed the wrong ballots, but it's also important to realize scale. We're talking about thousands of ballots, but 80 million ballots have been requested nationwide. Here's former deputy Postmaster general Ron Stroman. Despite some of those concerns, things were going at this point I'm reasonably well, Stroman said. It's important to remember that if you're hearing about a mistake at this point in the election, like in Allegheny County, for instance, officials realized their errors early enough to send out new ballots and fix the problems. That is NPR's miles. Parks. Thank you, Miles. Thank you. One company

"As Michael McDonald. E as he gets on this song Did you play this Because of the conversation we had yesterday about our two rock stars You want to see? Make love because if you remember my two or one of them was Michael McDonald, Remember who the other one was to you? You, said Michael McDonald, and I think he was either Bob Seger or someone else who looks like Michael McDonald seeker. I'm thinking Brian Johnson, not from a CDC as Faras, the two lead man that I'd like to see gay with each other on and we don't just come up with those things to talk about on the radio out of thin air. Certainly not that weird. Instead, I saw this article on Twitter yesterday by loud Wire, a medalist magazine on It includes an admission from Judas Priest's Rob Helper. Who I don't know why anybody was surprised when he came out. I mean leather and studs and Judas Priest Don't expect didn't expect then the frontman from a machismo heavy metal band is gonna be gay. Robert Alford had been gay the whole time and then after They have been popular for a long time and then started fade a little bit, You know, getting well. Hey, admitted the loud wire magazine that once on a drunken night of carousing. He tried to make it happen with the frontman from Iron Maiden, Not Bruce Dickinson, who was the later lead singer of Iron Maiden, but another dude. By the name of Paul Deanna, and I guess they were touring together. They weren't really cool with each other. The bands it was like, you know, there's a competition that takes place on DH. In fact, Paul Deano said Iron Maiden would blow Judas Priest off the stage every night. And then Robert Alford said, I'd like to blow you off the stage every night that that last part I made up myself. But the first part really did happen about them having beef. So then I guess, Robert Alford says in his memoir, Maybe I took pianos, comment that he would blow Judas Priest off the stage too literally. Because the one night we got drunk together. I tried to seduce him. I mean, there's drunk, and there's I think it's a good idea to seduce my touring front man. So the Judas priest front man said We.

Weekend: Tarantino's Hollywood of 1969; Michael McDonald's voice; RIP NOLA legends and more

"Michael McDonald's voice is perhaps one of the most recognizable in pop music could be due to his hits with the Doobie brothers could also be related to the hip hop artist who sample his records but frame producer Jonathan Shift let has another theory aimed since the mid nineteen seventies MacDonald has performed background vocals on hundreds of recordings by other artists see if you recognize him in this bit from steely Dan movie talk to you hello. This is Michael McDonald. You know that was a kind of an elite group in L._A.. Area that I really always felt very proud to be a part of I got to single awesome pretty great singers Howard you James Ingram Luther Vandross Michael Jackson and I always kind of felt like that was a real feather in my cap to be able to step up to the Mike with those guys and it was also great way for me to get get in the studio in here stuff before it was actually released. It's Kinda like being a fly on the wall background singer back. That's how I got the job of student Davos up working at casuals with some of the guys who were actually playing rhythm section on records and <hes> and singing backgrounds for those guys selling. Another records that they were doing I did Kinda get used to hearing me sing with myself and I realized that there's something to that when the same singers Zinger sings all the parts. There's a certain psych sibling harmony. You're you're probably tighter with yourself in anyone else on the planet it's going to be you know which is what Donald and Walter did with me for the steely Dan track bad sneakers curse you suddenly realize that's kind of sound that you probably wouldn't get any other way but to use the same person singing all the parts and then doubling all the parts so that was really one of the first times I became keenly aware of that sound which some people bowl think of as the Michael McConnell background sound but then on subsequent records toward people were saying well. How did you get that sound? I could say well you know I I did all the parts of myself and double them go. Let's do that we can talk about all those recordings that you run for a long time but I just wanted to fast forward a little bit to some of the more recent collaborations that you've donald sure sounds like grizzly bear to me yeah very unique band grizzly. Grizzly bear <hes> and I I really came out of the blue they contacted me and I had not heard the van but they sent me a track and it just was so fresh and different end is seemingly abandoned was is really trying to exercise a certain kind of musicality Abner Amanda Schone Swim <hes> just did that record not that long ago seemingly <hes> House and Santa Barbara where they had kind of camped set up camp in Amanda her mom was Donna Summer and I met Amanda which is about ten years old is first time matter and all these years later singing on record twitter as my friend Steve Brunner Aka under a great experience. I have to give credit to Kenny loggins on that. One Kenny's <UNK> SON had heard Steve in an interview kind of mentioned myself and Kenny is a couple of his influences. His son you know was a big fan of thunder cat as was my daughter at the time and so his son contacted Kenny. Kennedy and dad you gotTa call this guy and maybe write something with them. You know so Kenny kind of reached out to Steve Steve got back to us and we all got together studio in Ojai California and listened to a bunch of music together together which was great fun and then we decided to write that tuned together <hes> something Steve had already started and so we added are two cents in <hes> Steve went and mixed in general question. What are you looking for? If anything in these kinds of collaborations I think just a chance to find something that strikes match for army and I I look in every direction for that. You know not just new artists in new collaborations with contemporary artists. I still look to the past for a lot of my inspiration laid on the bus last night my headphones on listening losing two hours of Curtis Mayfield. He's just you know some of those groups are just so infectious and so wonderful in his lyrics of course just so stream of consciousness and so poignant you know much like the guys he's like Steve Brunner Anderson and Kendrick Lamar those guys of today they're just kind of breaking new ground and he was definitely unique voice for Modern Soul Patrick one or two Michael McDonald performs at the Hollywood bowl on July thirty first and that's it for this week. The frame is produced by the mighty team of Oscar Garza Darby Maloney Jonathan Shiffling Julia.
