"The other thing is, despite all the smoke that they were blowing, you know, one other point. Um, I believe that Nagy made the comment earlier in the season, one of those press conferences. That him and pace and the president of football operations met every week to discuss what was going on. So despite this, the comments the past couple of days That he's not involved in football operations and that he is and then he isn't they keep waffling on that because they get caught their own. Life. Yeah, Tony. Thank you Appreciate the phone call. Look, I get what you're trying to say. You're trying to say that this isn't a football family anymore. It was a football family. When It was owned by a Hal is, but as soon as it was inherited by the McCaskey's whether it was, um Michael McCaskey before him. And now, George, they're doing the same stuff. And you don't believe in ownership. And and I'm riding in the sidecar right now In 2021 next year, I I say with the benefit of looking at his entire body of work, Lovey Smith was a good coach for this team right now. Don't take this team to the Super Bowl. They went to the post season three times. What was the team as consistently successful as you want? No, but like had an identity. Yes, he wanted to get off the bus running. Yes, he was. He was going to take the football away. It's here too good. He wanted to beat the Packers. He did. There were a lot of good things about loving love. He was a good coach here. Anyone games? Yeah, I would say the best aspect of the lovey Smith regime was the fact that when they were counted out, they put actually played the best football. So when you thought that the Bears had no chance to win a game boom, the players play for loving and they want a game You didn't expect they played. They loved him, too. That's something that hasn't happened as of late. Yeah. Randy's in Seattle. Hey, Randy, you're on ESPN 1000. Gentlemen, Good afternoon, and you guys been cracking me up last couple of days. So listen, I didn't think things could get worse than they were. After that. There's a press conference yesterday and then George comes on your show and like, wow, He just blew it away that way. So you guys do the greatest thing today? You need to play that. Ares management slave right song at the start of every show until we get past this Because I thought it was the greatest chuckle I've had, and I thought it was the greatest greatest song ever. So I did want comment, Um Last week. You had dander, Can I? I thought he was a tremendous interview for you guys. Yeah, he doesn't. I spend very much before he was great and The last thing I wanted to say, I mean, this is a second rate organization run by a third rate knucklehead and They're three eyes that apply to bears management. Ineptitude, incompetence and incontinence because they keep paying down their legs, even though they don't intend to. But that means that stops writing continents means it stops right. Like you. It doesn't. It's not a pure full stream. Isn't that right? I mean, if you haven't continents and major teammates and destroying right, am I right? Like I should know this. I'm the one turning 54 next month like I gotta twice this morning. I got a bit like three and five to take a whiz. It says a lack of voluntary control over your nation or Number two. Okay, so you can't control Okay? He's right. The benefit of the doubt. All right. There you go. If I could offer by way of analogy, your broadcast partner Tom Waddell. When he got into the profession he's in now. I think it would be the first to tell you he struggled. Oh, George, I think your mom is here. E think I think I don't agree with Randy. I don't think you can. I think you have to say that song for when you're feeling your lowest You can't just like if you're having I had a little bit of a bad afternoon play. You gotta wait for that you have the wings are really in a valley And then you hit that you had to go. But not you guys. It was a complete home run this year. That song Grand Slam Boom! George, I think your mom is here, boys. You can take a right, Ted, Don't forget your course. Oh, yeah. Thanks. I mean, Allison a ride it is. It's fantastic. Listen to it next. Yes, but I'm just saying, like we're just surrender or whatever his name was suggesting that you start to show when you had on the show every day with that, I think then you get tired of it's like a top 40 years. I don't know. I don't know playing the top 40 hits, though, until it's not ahead. And and I think what Chris said in December. It was true. It was very true and very funny. But after that press conference when you saw the four guys who are in the sleigh ride with Virginia, you could visualize all of it with Ted with that stupid Headphone with the game. We got the quarterback situation completely, right? No. Have we won enough games? No. Everything else is there. It looks like he's working in a drive thru and Wendy's Why are you doing this? It's from what I hear that song. Next. We're gonna make our picks and like it, love it, Whether you like it or not, it's all coming up. He was a.

"Like we could all use some cow bell after the first hour of the show. Why, just like Cal Bell Feel like I've been hit with a cow bell? Have you really do feel that I really did I say, really suck that bad early on Really bad chairman said you were back when I was I said to you guys like I was doing radio and television. Well, I was still playing cat carried your ass. Well, that's how bad you are that you don't have to kill you. Do you? Do you know how many times the £2 of disagreement and choke football owner said that you were bad? He should have seen is a player early cut four times. I thought that was a better analogy. Well, I mean, that would have been a that would have been the CEO is a job to cut you. Football guy. And by the way did what did I say? I said Ted was the president of football ops. Yeah, that's what it is. You know, he's the president of the team runs. What's it different? Twice? Not to be president of grocery store ops. When you're president. When you're president, you're president of football operations. Your president, business operations. You're president of everything There's right. So I wasn't wrong as a third party listening to the conversation. Uh, Lot of semantics being argued about there. Yeah, well, that's what that is so very great job trying to find a different way to attack the consent roaring of your questions with semantics, Right? Look, that's a trick. You bought down the the questioner with semantics instead of having to answer or explain. What can I read you a tweet? This is really good this time, buddy, and you My buddy Lewis tweets. He runs one of the bears websites to bleacher nation bears, he said. That's good semantics right there. That's very good. Yes, it went over my head for a second. You didn't really good, really good. George is behind the glass actually giggled a little bit, so they rode up about. You know a lot of the interview, they wrote up a lot about what about the Packers. How he hates losing the Packers, how he needs to get better against the Packers, and he brings up a good point. He wrote this what he tweeted George McCaskey losses to the Packers hurt more than others. George McCaskey. After watching the Packers beat the Bears 76 to 41 this year stand pat change nothing in an organizational structure that has resulted in the Bear's losing nanite of their last 10 in the Syriza's You know what I mean? Like? Do you really want to change it? Are you really upset that things are are this bad? You say you hate losing to them. You say you need to be better. You've lost nine out of 10. You lost by 35 points to them this year, And yet you say, let's stand Pat. This is why the organization that had the meeting at Lambeau after a loss. Remember? Yeah, yeah, of course I get that Virginia was. Yeah, I was angry. Piss s so So the you said earlier. Something about why? Why do you think they remain so loyal to this class? People came to me yesterday and they didn't know the Dave McGinnis story after I tweeted that early in the day, So it's 1998 the Bears Go foreign 12 again back to back for 12 years under one E one he gets fired. Michael McCaskey is running the team. He's been running the team since the mid eighties. Not a lot of fans of Michael McCaskey. Michael McCaskey puts out a coaching search 5 to 6 people. And he ends up deciding on Dave McGinnis. Dave McGinnis was defensive coordinator at that time, and he was a former Bears linebacker coach under Dica, who's a great guy loved this great guy. Great football guy gregarious. Good guy in the front for a Bears coach, and he he announced that they hired him before McGinnis signed the deal begin its was still negotiating. Salaries for his assistance, which Michael McCaskey was trying to short change him on. So McGinnis ends up walking out of the building, not taking the job total embarrassment to the Bears. Virginia's so upset up Michael, who's her blood? Her son. She basically fires him, bumps him up to the chairman position and then goes out of the family for the first time in the history of the team to Ted Phillips, first time anyone's been president of the team. Outside. That's not a house, not a McCaskey, Ted. Hires a general manager, something they did not do since the late eighties. And gets a deal with the city of Chicago to build the stadium. Michael McCaskey was hated by Richard Daley. This like big time. I believe the McCaskey's made a deal with the devil that if If Ted got a stadium built, even though it's not a great stadium that he got a job for life, So they went from not being able to hire a general manager, not wanting to which Ted did. And not being able to build the stadium because the mayor couldn't stand the McCaskey family going in getting the job done in the city limits. I believe that it's been giving Ted this no. There's no kill mentality. He cannot be killed. Ever. He is here forever. Is that Is it business talk? Yes, That's my goodness. Time. Kill pass. Is that what you're saying? Got nine lives. You can't kill him. Okay, You've got a cheat code. I got it. I got it. But like That doesn't mean you can't.

"So you're not gonna win this press conference? But, boy, I don't know how it could have gone. Any further south like I mean, the concept we always talked about. We had this conversation always and always argued with cap about Ryan pace while he drafted with conviction, and I'm fine with a guy that drafts players with conviction, But I always said I'd prefer someone who drafts with competence. And when you talk about collaboration if you're collaborating on bad decisions, how important is collaboration? So it's like all of these catch phrases and all these important words and all of these things? You know the continuity if you're caught if you have continuity. But you're together making collaboratively bad decisions. You're really not making any progress so we could have done we role played yesterday. We've done things like what would they say if we spent four hours on the show yesterday? Hey, guys, let's come up with worst things they could say when they meet the media. What is the worst possible situation that they could do? We could not have topped with the Bears produced today. I said earlier in a tweet. I've covered this team. I grew up a lifelong bears fans. I was inside Halas Hall when the Dave McGinnis fiasco happened If you missed it, it's when they announced they hired him without coming to terms to his contract and not allowing him to hire his assistant coaches. So They announced he was head coach before he agreed to the contract and he walked out, and it eventually led the Michael McCaskey giving up his leadership of the organization to Ted Phillips. It was so bad To me. That's the only thing on par with what I saw. Today. It was tone death. It was incompetent. It was it was actions showing me the George McCaskey. Doesn't care about winning. I want to play you a couple things. If you miss that, George McCaskey today, and this is what I've been highlighting. I've always said okay, we could yellow pace for making the wrong decision a quarterback, but he was allowed to go rogue. If you had good leadership at the top. Your general manager can't go rogue and allow your coach not to know. And everything like that. And to do things secretly, So I've always yelled. It starts at the top. And this I believe, includes Mark Potter ashes. Questions regarding Leadership at the top of the organization and who impacts what in. This was part of the press conference to George McCaskey earlier today, George even with this year's playoff parents, the Bears have been in playoff seven times in 28 years since the end of the decayed era. Do a lot of fans that reflects on you. So how much merit is there to the idea that the Bears need people more rooted in football to make these football decisions than you and Ted? Well, Ryan and Matt are our football guys. I've heard it often that Uh, Had medals and football affairs and that notion is just absurd. Just doesn't happen. He's the president and C E O Bryan reports to Ted. But the idea that the Federer or I meddle in football decisions just isn't true. I know that, but that's not my question. It's not about meddling in the actual football. I got the field. I think the criticism is that you you are judging, uh, the coach and general manager, and I think people feel you that the Bears eat people more rooted in football. Make that decision. Oh, I beg your pardon? Um Well, um That's a valid criticism. My performance is evaluated by ownership and the board. That's how that process works. There you go, and that's my point. George doesn't know the business. And Ted certainly doesn't know the business and he does matter. No one is ever said the Ted medals in football. The problem is is there's no checks and balances and Ryan could go rogue in the most important thing. However, if they had a true football president, there would be more brain power up there on that stuff. The flawed processes that have happened before won't happen. Ted Phillips is a part of the group that makes the decision to hire Ryan pace. Whatever Ryan Pace is responsible. Ultimately, Ted is responsible for as well. Listen, I sat and watched it I took. I was texting back and forth with some other people. None of us could really. Believe some of the stuff we were hearing, but my concern from yesterday was realized today that their acceptance of mediocrity, Reza is the result. Of the fact that they like Ryan and Matt, and they're like of Ryan and Matt supersedes their performances as general manager. And coach and I think that that came across quite a bit today. And to me, it's not allude a unilateral concept. You can like this guy, but he also has to be a good evaluator of talent. You can like this guy, but he also has to be a guy that can That can develop that talent. So if you want to have a likability contest, that is fine, But you also have to have people that are competent at their jobs. And I think that when you listen to what was going on, it was quite evident. That that George and Ted both really like. Matt and Ryan. But can you separate church and state there you can like someone and then look at their performance and said, That's not good enough, right? Like I think you made the point that we're doing business and they don't win. Yeah, give give them some property together. And you guys can all have you know, some vacation homes near one another, and you can all be good friends for the rest of Eternity, But I just don't know how you look. Look, They asked. What did anybody else I wrote this down as well. Did anyone else get the feeling that maybe Ryan Pace had gotten a contract extension and I want to play that for you Next. Did anybody else hear that? Maybe Case hasn't decided to move away from. I mean, there are a lot of things that they're implied, like you always like to say. It's really weird. It's weird, though. It's really weird. The Ryan pace contract situation I want to tell you that coming up next nobody wanted to answer Where, When is your guy wonder? Your guys contracts run out. It's amazing 3323776 Ryan Pace. Ludes. The pass rush when it comes to his future with the Bears. That's next. You're Listeningto Waddle in Sylvia on ESPN 1000, Chicago's home for Sports. Black and.

"To Chicago's afternoon news here on 7 20 W G, and here's something maybe you haven't thought about. I did not until he's brought to my attention, but the pandemic has been big for auctions in one way or another. They've gone virtual. But I guess business is going out of business or things like that. Also, KONG coin auctions have been really big This year. We'll talk to Mike Jones, champion auctioneer International champion auctioneer about that a little bit later in the program. But speaking of international champions, Adam Hold the Bears inside of for us is On a phone line. Adam welcome. Hey, Steve. Yeah. We still have this big game on Sunday that no one seems all that excited about Steelers 7 15. No, that's not it. That's right. Kevin Powell is here is well, All right, so the Bears play Well, first set up the weekend, right because we've got extra more games, and we typically would We do, and that is one thing I'm really excited about. So for those that might not know I'm well. They should know, because the Bears were the benefit of getting this extra playoff first. So both the FDA and NFC now has 1/7 team that gets in the playoffs, and that's created this double. Triple header weekend. So you get three games Saturday and three games Sunday instead of just two like he used to be, and you know, for the most part these air really good matchups, and it starts Saturday at noon with a game. I'm really excited about the Colts. Who went 11 5 the bears of the example of why maybe this wasn't necessary to add another playoff team. But on the seaside, the Colts went 11 and five And they would not have been in if not for this extra playoff spot. So I think it's a good thing not only to make sure teams like that get in, but also because the fans really win by getting all these extra games isn't their team in with a losing record. Well, yes. Um, because now that would have happened even in a normal year, though, because Washington Washington football team got in. I think they finished six and 10 or maybe 799. Yeah. Yes, 79 That's happened before they won their division, so they're in no matter what that would have even happened in past years. It was just a matter of that division being so bad. I go back all the way to when they added the wild card game, And I remember, um Michael McCaskey. Another's worrying that one day that would lead to teams with Losing records, making it into the playoffs. But as you say this doesn't matter here because they won the division. But that doesn't happen very often, right? I mean, there hasn't been a Yeah. The wall. You know what the interesting nugget on that is one of the times it happened. The Carolina Panthers got in and 78 and one and they actually managed to win. They upset forget it, who was that? They beat, But they won that game as the whole wandered off because not only do you get in if you win your division, you also get the host the game, which Washington is doing this week and the host Tom Brady in the box. Who had a better record, But the Carolina Panthers pulled that off, and their head coach Woz Ron Ron Rivera, who is now the head coach of the Caroline Pennell. Actually, I'm remembering who they beat. They beat the Arizona Cardinals and the head coach of that team Woz, Dave McGinnis. There are no Europeans. Now the head coach off camp bag. So this is actually a rematch of that exact game. At least between the two head coaches, of course different teams now. All right. What do you guys Adam? Kevin? What do you make it to the game on Sunday with the Bears and Saints. Adama, Go ahead, Fire away. Well, I think it's um again that Probably gonna be moment like Sunday's game against the Packers, where they're in it. Have chances to make big plays and That'll give him the opportunity to pull off an upset that none of us really see coming. The reason. I'm not going to take that bait and say it happens is because they're just having made those plays this season. It's really been the theme of the season on defense. They haven't been able to generate enough take aways and get those game changing type plays. Um, And once the offense for the most part, the season has gotten in the red zone. Ah, lot of times they settled for field gold. And you saw on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers really good team. That just doesn't cut it. You want to pull off the upset? You can't settle for field goals and you must get the game changing plays on defense, and especially because it looks like me. He's officially questionable. Roque want Smith. What I find hard to believe Real continents will play Sunday, and if the Bears don't have him, he's really been their best defensive player this year. It just seems like a tough task. Kevin, what are you looking for? Yeah, I'm kind of right on the same page with Adam. You just saw what the Bears did against the Packers early on that opening drive and really throughout the game, But as Adam said, they just weren't able to put it in the end zone. And when you're playing a legit NFL offense with legit quarterbacks, you know they can They can explode for big plays at any moment. So for me, it's Zigic Ng to that similar game plan, which is work the clock. I mean, they time of possession was 35 25 bears last game, and they still lost by a wide margin. So that game playing that idea offensively, I think is what you have to put in place here against the Saints. But, as Adam said, and look, the Bears had two, maybe three golden opportunities to interception. Air intercept Aaron Rodgers last week. They didn't do that, and that's kind of in the story. All year. So I would say offensively, stick to kind of what you were doing. Get it in the end zone. And somehow, some way I pray that you get some takeovers from breeze. Hey, Adam, I should ask you. I know you mentioned the injuries for the Bears with Ro Kwan, Jalen Johnson. Darnell movie. Um The Elven Camaro had six rushing touchdowns a couple weeks ago..

"Um Just one of five. The over under is 44 a half the money line as the Bears minus 1 70, So they are favored for the 12 o'clock kick at Soldier Field. Brian Handley, Freddie opener with you. Let's run out onto Indiana and Joe Hey, Joe, what's happening today? The effort. I want Tonto, get your thoughts on by possible new bears Coach, But before I do that, yesterday, I heard you mentioned Bob Nelson. But I was the only guy on the planet who remembered by Bilson. You know the most amazing thing about him and others of his time. He did that He did the broadcast by himself. He didn't have any color analyst right and and he was great. And and before before they even had live broadcasts capabilities. He read it off a ticker tape delayed and you know there's a line drive left center field and made all that stuff up. He was He was a fabulous stewed, you know? Get invited up to his apartment on Lake Shore Drive. Once they spent about an hour and a half with him. He was such a gracious, just knowledgeable, nice older man. That I just really he was He was one of my heroes as a kid. Well, I'm six I'm 63. He was really old when he was doing White Sox games when I was listening to him when I was in grade school, so I know he was an older guy doing White Sox games We had was fun, sticking the transistor radio under the pillow and listening to baseball games, and I would never catch the end. I'd always fall asleep and then here's some other programming. On the station. I'm freaking 80. Okay. Thank you Think you'll ever get there, But I'm hoping, man. I'm hoping you know, over. Actually all these retirement funds. I'm hoping I get the 80. You know, it's not that it's not good. You sound good. So, what do you think about what you want to talk about, Guys? They're going to get her coaches. We're gonna get you pull a couple names out of the hat for bears Coach is what would you What would you think? Boy. It's so tough until we appreciated state. Keep listening. We appreciate you jumping on in. That's always tough, Brian because you know, you look at it and other than John Fox. And then you know Patty Driscoll and George Palace that bears didn't hire have not hired anybody that had previous NFL coaching experience. And you know you always they're always looking for that Next hot guy They're always looking for the next coordinator is going to make the next step forward. They're always looking for But a lot of times. You know, Andy Reid, This isn't his first gig. You know, you look around Bill Belichick. Not his first gig. Um, you know, they've been all the other places and failed and then go on in. Figured out what they did wrong and move to other places. So it's hard to come up with guys. You got Matt rule in Carolina. They bring an entire college coaching staff there. I don't necessarily think that's the way to go one of our poll questions today because there's a story out there that the Bears if they do part ways with that Maggie might make a run at Pat Fitzgerald are questioned. On Twitter at ESPN 1000 is Would you want Pat Fitzgerald as the next Bears head coach? For the most part in my mind? College coaches don't work that well, no lie because they don't in your mind is right because it's usually not a good transition. It's such a different job and even the reverse being true. Lovey Smith gone down the champagne, love. You never wanted to go out and recruit 18 year old kids and try to sell my I'm coming to campus, right? You want to work with men and professionals and motivating grown men is a lot different than motivating young kids who are trying to get to the NFL, right, right. And plus couch coaches make The good ones, the great ones to make even more than the NFL's pain these days, right? So Would Pat Fitzgerald Like the challenge of his hometown team being you being on silent for the Chicago Bears. Or would you like a challenge of going to Ann Arbor? Because that was the rumor for years, and they may still be in play when Jim Harbaugh finally takes lean from the Wolverines. Pat Fitzgerald to me might be too smart to take the Bears job. Who you working for India trust and faith in the ownership. To give you the resource is you need to build the winner. If you think you can motivate grown man, and you think you have all the tools to be a great head coach, will you have the support? And the everything you need from ownership, right? To be successful, and you know, when you look at McCaskey family, it's a family business. It's not like they made their billions in a different industry and then went on bought it a professional football franchise. They inherited that team, So it's a legitimate question. Are there anyone? Is there? Anyone in that family? We've seen Michael McCaskey. We've seen George McCaskey, obviously currently Do they know what they're looking at me? It's a legitimate question. Do they know football? Ted Phillips. He's been there for three decades. He was an accountant by trade. He got the soldier field renovations done and Was rewarded with the title of president. Is there anyone in the hierarchy? I guess you can question Ryan pays two who really knows what they're looking at. You never know. You bring guys in and you've got to have some kind of track record. It seems for you to be a deceased feel safe, And it wasn't a track record with Matt now, either wasn't a track record with Ryan Pace. There were first got first time gigs for both of them Won was. Have they ever hired a GM who was the G M somewhere else. I don't believe it certainly have either. Phil. Phil Emery wasn't the guy, right? I mean, they those Ryan Pace was like fourth in the chain of command down in New Orleans, and she was never what was Angelo. He will not. I don't think so. Okay and Vinny see Yeah, So would any GM worth his salt? Who's done successfully anywhere else, Right? Come to the Chicago Bears. I mean, right now, you look you only see those 32 of those jobs. So, of course you want. You have a list of people who want him. Right? But do you are you gonna be able to go track? A guy who's who's one of Lombardi Trophy or Had sustained success. And you think Epstein had faith and Tom Ricketts that he was going to get it done on the North side, and he only did it once it was the first one to do it over 100 plus years. But it's a different deal if you two to attract guys who Met and succeeded at those challenges prior to this. He also knew that when hell came here also knew that when they wanted to spend money, they would they would do so before Theo got here. The Cubs were nowhere near the third. Has paid team in baseball and is he leaves there right up there, and now they're, but they're going. They're trending their other way. Now, having now they're baseball budget is more constrained. That was when he first got here, right. We've got Tom and Twitter sent me a message..

"You saw like for whatever you we can use The King Hicks his absence as a You know, as as unease, e excuse, but you've got to have an answer for being better than that. Every trip down the field. It was just like a video game Every and I knew that. Look, The Packers are great. If you've watched the Packers it off. You have any other skill guys and you should in fantasy football. You know what they do with the start of football games, no matter who they play. They go down the field and they score. They take their 1st 15 plays and Aaron Rodgers performs and perfectly And they go down the field and score now they're showing right near can. Yeah, they're they're flawed and they don't do that old game. They scored 30 a game, but they haven't been perfect. They haven't been good running the football this year. They got better yesterday. That's for sure. Without Akeem Hicks out there, but But one thing you didn't know is they would probably go down the field and they would score now. How are you going to adjust? And we know this Bears team just doesn't adjust. They don't adjust. You can have a 27 to 3 Bad first half 27 to 10 at the half. I think they went in and then you come out again with that football. You deferred because you want that football so badly to start the third quarter where you've only scored seven points all year. Let's give Aaron Rodgers the football because that's what the analytics say. Because that's what football says. We differ because we want to double dip we wanted in the third quarter, even though we've scored seven points off third quarter and even though the Packers take it every first possession and they marched down the field and they score on every team, but that's okay. We'll take it in the third quarter. We don't want the opening kickoff, and so they're down 27 to 10, and it's time again to go into the The locker room and it's time to adjust and they're the only team in football. Who could be this crappy and the crappy gets crap here. I don't know how they do it. It's a feat. It's amazing. Met. Maggie looks at his coaches. And he says, Guys, we've been so crappy. Let's get crappy that he could do it sounds like a dance song pairs on 3123 pins. Like and again, they get out school where they get out, scored in the third quarter 14 and nothing was 14 enough in and then they hit Cruise control. Look. These air. This is why these these air all major problems that there's no solution for. We've talked at nauseam about the inefficiencies of their offense. Going back to week 11 of the 2000 and 18 sees it's been a disaster. Collectively, it's been a disaster. That's not a bump. That's not a blip. That's not a valley. That's who they've been. And their inability To play well coming off of a buy or an extended period of time. That's not a blip. That's not a bump. That's not a valley that's who they are right and those air really disturbing problems. That don't have a solution, obviously right? They're all a bunch of guys and this is the root of the Bears problem. They're all a bunch of guys who don't have solutions. Now, man, Maggie yesterday in his press conferences talking about soul searching, Dude, you got off two weeks of soul searching at the bye week. Now you're telling us you need to do some soul searching after that game in Green Bay off the bye week. He'ii change coaches. He's changed quarterbacks. He's changed play callers met Maggie. I like you. You're a nice guy. You have no answers. You must go, Ryan Pace, You've got good hair. You have a good story out of eastern Illinois. You've had six years. You've tried it. Quarterback you've tried. I think to build an offense. You have no solutions. You have none. You started with drafting Kevin White instead of building the offensive line. You took Mitch Travis Key over Patrick Mahomes. And to Shawn Watson, who by the ways on a heater that's hotter than what Holmes is dealing right now. It's crazy. They threw for someone like 800 yards and seven touchdowns of the two of them this weekend. You know you You decided to go with cold combat over Chase Claypool. We've given you six years. You've got no answers. Ryan Pace, You can be my neighbor. You're a nice guy with good hair. You can't be my general manager anymore, and Ted Phillips You can go and you can take over for Michael McCaskey. And at one time we celebrated that, because Michael McCaskey was the worst of the worst. He had no clue how to run a football team. And with Ted running it, at least it looked like we had a new set of eyes. We built a new stadium. We had a new general manager after not having a GM for 15 years, But when you go in after you, fire lovey and you hire Phil Emery And you go in you miss on so many different things, and there are no checks and balances in that building anymore. And you're some 500 since being the team president for over two decades and you have three playoff wins under your watches his team president, You have no solutions. So when you're president doesn't have a solution when you're General manager doesn't have a solution. And when your coach doesn't have a solution, you must clean house Houston. We have an issue and and as soon as George figures that out and God bless Virginia McCaskey, she's sitting there wasting a Sunday evening when she should be drinking tea in her beautiful mansion in Lake Forest. If she lives there, she does, and she lives in the same house that all the kids grew up in back in the day like she's a very modest You know, woman, Despite their enormous wealth, she salt of the earth. She's fantastic, and I and I share your feelings. It's hard to watch a wasted eight hours of her day, driving two in from Green Bay City during covert of a 90 some year old person in that suite. She wasted her time. God bless Virginia McCaskey. George, You wanna win? You don't know how figure it out. Get a new team President consult with every sports person, You know. John McDonough.

"Much for joining us much appreciated our numbers. 312591 89 100. We are gonna connect with the guest and talk about the rich history of your Chicago bears. Let's pause here and talk about this brand new book, The men and moments that made the Chicago Bears. It's called The Big 50 and Adam Johns joins us Now. I used to read Adam when he was here. In Chicago. He still here in Chicago. But I used to read him when he covered the bears in the black box to the Chicago Sun Times. And I believe we have chatted in the past animal. Come back to double DS. How are you, sir? Good. Good. How are you tonight? My friends. I'm doing well. I went through the book last night. I read several chapters. As is your habit. It's very, very well written. I laughed out loud, many passengers here. Just looking at some of the chapters. Dick Urlacher. Gale Sayers. Obviously Hester, I get that theeighties five pairs. Of course. Alice, Of course. Singletary, Cutler, Bubka's Ryan. 1963 I get that Walter Payton? Of course. You even have a chapter entitled They are who we thought they were. That's Dennis Green of her not mistaken, right? Yes. Yes, the the infamous game in Arizona. The Brian relax game. Yeah. Devin Hester eventually took over when he returned that by the public, Turner know that kind of somebody move backwards. Come back in the desert. How is the big 50? How does that include, with all due respect to the Grand Dam, But how does that include Virginia McCaskey? Well, I wanted to do something different with this. But this book right like there's been so many Look, Sam paying. There's been books and this Gethers, you know, autobiographies and Margo. You know Jim McMahon. Um Helen has like several of them, Um, when I said that, so I have been covering embarrasses 2012. And I've always been struck by the fact that the reverence paid to Virginia McCaskey because she speaks to the team's travels with the team. She goes to every game. She's in the boot in the owner food. She's everywhere. And there is such a reverence paid to her by the players by the team by coaches that I wanted to include it in some capacity, not only to be different, but just knowing the team knowing the players. I thought it was just imperative that was important to tell her part of the story. Because he's seen so much. I mean, she was a sick game in the bar. You know where they had to cook this tonight before. You know, if you know, you know, I don't know McCaskey's I mean her son's regularly just get ripped to shreds just hammered. On radio and in the papers and in magazines online, obviously, and someone's deserve it. Some was, I thought a little over the top, especially Michael McCaskey. But overall, do you think this family has been a good Steward of this what Some people would say this iconic Chicago Trust for lack of a better descriptor. Yeah, I know what you're saying. I think there's almost two conversations, others. They're like the football conversation. And the answer to that was a no. I mean, they haven't won a title since 1985. Before. That was 1963. So is one of the founding teams you want or championships, right? You wanna be the Patriots? You want to be the Steelers? You wanna have, uh, like the 1913. The eggs should have been a dynasty like there's. There's so many questions about there. Football decision that I know that maybe they hired the wrong guys and what that, but I think in terms of Maybe their relationships that they build with the players, especially knowing George because he pat McCaskey like this important toe a lot of these guys. I mean, they've taken care of guys from from Johnny Knox. Zach Miller. Just guys from recent history. You know, there's a lot of veteran players will captain the loop with a lot of different things. Even guys like Spice Adams, So I guess it's how you do it from a False sense. No, They haven't been what the Patriots have become, or even the Giants Steelers If you want to use Sam, all right? Adam Johnson's here. Adam John's The new book is the men and moments that made the Chicago Bears the big 50. I read last night, the chapter on their ridiculous soup bowl shuffle. I thought that was really funny and very witty. Hey, what do you think is an observer? The NFL and you know you're right now for the athletic Chicago This. The schedule is going to collapse under covert 19. Unless we just all signed the indemnification. You know that Goodell sends over they all sign it and just go out there and play whether you you know whether you have tested positive or not. You know, the horses are out of the barn at this point, right? Um and just let them play and when somebody becomes so symptomatic that they can't play, you know they're sick. Then they have to sit. But other than that, I mean, is there any way to salvage this season? I was just going to collapse. What? You're seeing reshuffling of the deck here right Tuesday night Football. I'm not complaining about that. I love watching football, So I'll take you up on a Tuesday night, but that's different for these guys. And you know they're injury risks involved when there Playing in a Thursday then I get in on Tuesday and the rough, it's different practice questions that come to play like some of these teams like the Titans didn't practice for a long time before they played again. So yeah, there's a lot of up in the air quality about this, I think 18th season is definitely on the table, which would then include pushing back the playoffs. There's too much money. Too much TV money ball. They're not get this season, and that's the way I feel like those shuffle deck is many times that they can, but this season yet Well, they have the players union is gonna have to cut a deal where they indemnify the league. You know, long term for covert 19 related issues of these players now or in the future, And it is, you know. Is play the games and see what happens. We're talking early in the program, but just it would help the handicapping of the games. If you like to bet on NFL football to know how many players are playing this weekend, who are positive? Yeah, right. It's um After the whole funny thing involved in this because gambling such a big part of sport, right? I mean, putting like a book in sort of field. Correct me. If I'm wrong, there's only one going up in the United States, so it's like it's been accepted. And this is it's made for a tricky season Tuesday night Football canceled Thursday night football two games on Monday in his other injury rich that come with it. So if you're a gambler, Yeah, this this is not the season to be throwing around serious change. Make sure some good profits. So Adam Johns. Thank you. Good luck with the book, The big 50 the men and moments that made the Chicago Bears. We appreciate it, and I'm sure we'll talk again. I'm gonna take.

"See everybody loves 77 on Twitter, says carbon. The real question is when you were looping, did you Fluffed alive or let your golfer's did you Turn your head when you're a caddy, you shut your mouth and you turn your head. I mean, I never flunked catting. No, I don't think so. I mean, your kid, you know you getting high on the course. Smoking grass. Never bad catting. Yeah, I don't think I never helped someone with a lie. But we did have I did I see a thing or two course you shut your mouth and you know Go on. You hope to tip is bigger because you kept your mouth shut. So you do Can you know I saw guys throw clubs. I saw guys curse that God I mean, you see it on the golf course right. It's amazing how passionate we get about it. None of us are ever going to make it soar, and one birdie on 18 brings you back the next morning. I think this is the way it's supposed to feel absolutely amazing. Let's go to Andrew and Oakland on ESPN 1000. What's up, Andrew? The guy I just wanna let you know I love your show, and you guys are awesome. So I was part of a mentally at Big one. Of course, Great course in Lamont. Yeah, Love great. It's a great track, but they always didn't keep up there. Fairways so true. So if you were in the fairway We were able to roll your ball. Give yourself a better life. At least get it out of the junk. You put an actual grass. Never touch it in the rough. But in the fairway way came up with the roll that you controlled in the fairway. That's a local rule that applied to each and every Gaul for our group. At least in your group. You're all right, so everybody knew the rules. Yeah, All right. Well, that's fine. And that's OK. That's totally fair, right? I mean, if I had the whole mentally knew that we were doing that. His issue. Well, then, all the sudden, dangerous things have changed a little bit mentally. Well, yeah, that needs to be something that's established by the less not asked the group. That's pretty good angels like guys. What do you think the four of us? Let's just make it the best line we possibly can. There are some bearing spots every once in a while. You know where the grass didn't grow or the water puddled and they killed the grass and the grass hasn't come back yet. And guess what? You got a hit off the hardpan. Did they close? Big run? I think they may have big run was a great old miles is right. They're ruffled feathers down the street. In course, Chicago? Yes. All those that whole collection down there in the minds of great courses and big run was an awesome way out. Last time I played it, and there's been years like, you know, it wasn't really well maintained. Unfortunately, I think I heard that they were closing. That course Tim Looks like it. Still it still open and you closed the metro last week and during my frank talking about Timmy, what's going on your own ESPN 1000 somebody, your karma. Lovely boys. Thank you Volunteer guys forever. I'm a golf junkie. I started playing golf 25 years ago, when there's time to hang up the football and everything else. All you listeners out there that loves sports involved. Campbell above the crack a cold one. And don't like golf. It's only because you can't hit the ball and learn how to hit the golf ball because the greatest games or is period. I mean to go out and gamble with your voice, and I don't play golf camp. I'll play with the kids, and we'll play for nickels play. Haney, I don't care. Yeah, golf, you, Campbell, Right, and you play the falls down. I love that. You're talking this You play the ball not know when the rules follow rules. You know, it's been raining for a week, and it's soaking out there before you take off. We play them down, boys that we roll. As long as everybody knows the rules. That's a calm you'll love this one. We changed the rule of this year. You could only roll it in your own fairway wood blocking my drive in there with nothing and on the first gay man. Sorry, that's like they're off hearing the wrong Claire. When you put it down now, that's pretty good, Tim. I do like that. Only if it's in your fairy. The only rule we always make even when we're playing for money. The one little advantage where everybody is always fine with is two off the first day. Even if we're playing money out. You want a breakfast ball? You had breakfast yet? Yeah, we don't do it just the league play. But like if I'm playing with the Dutch guys, Oliver's and Van Buren and my insurance guy, Jimmy Lau, and I'm out there at Sandy pines or someone with them. They got a group of 60 Now That's the way they work it. Brooks was bald. That's so everybody gets it If you hit a good one. You don't need one exactly at one further down the line exactly. Only on the first if you do not use your breakfast ball, that doesn't mean I want 15 that you get your Headdress ball. You get a breakfast ball on one. That's it. I have never. I have never used the breakfast. I've utilized the breakfast ball when I was allowing honest golf. You play you've never got on the first team shanked one and said I'm gonna hit one more put, but I find that hard to believe. Marc, Listen, I'm an honest guy. Carm. I wouldn't but I loved him. Breakfast balls, not dishonest. I know. I know all that to the family and the kids that way. No. What? But what drives me nuts? Especially wanted to slow round when the group in front of you there putting out and then the guy got annoyed because Mrs Punks grabs the butt and starts putting again When goes back that you're doing that is obnoxious here. I want to play off the freaking green. You want to do a quick trending murder? I want to find work in some friends so he can you go is like a double I've got. I've got just once You're going to double one day. I've played with who golfers I've got. I've got guys I play with, but I just You know, Usually I like this good. The last story. I heard about a guy that played as a singles. Michael McCaskey. Merc places a single all the time. He really does. He tells me Yeah, he goes out by himself all the time. I got no problem with it. America were quick to some trending. What's happened in the world of Social? Okay, there's there's actually a lot alright. "Twenty WGN there's just breaking news of the bears putting out a release that Michael McCaskey has passed away and let me read the release here I was with great sadness the Chicago Bears in the Caskey family mourn the loss of Michael B. McCaskey seventy six years old after a lengthy battle with cancer quote Mike was already successful in every sense of the word when he took over for George Halas after the passing of Papa bear in nineteen eighty three we are grateful to Mike for overseeing arguably the greatest team in NFL history and for his many years of service to the bears and to us the oldest of eleven siblings has many duties thrust upon him not all of them pleasant it might handle them all with grace and patience although much passing was not brought on by the novel coronavirus our family like so many people is not able to gather and grieve together at this time our hopes our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones to cope at nineteen and our focus in the coming days will be to celebrate Mike's life and be whatever source of support we can be to John and Catherine and those that they love so seventy six years old Michael McCaskey unite you know its it's it's a excellent underlining you know part of the family at the time you know during nineteen eighty five is right in the thick of it with the greatest I think race football team of all time and you know he's he's been out of the limelight for along time now as the bears of you know made some adjustments within the organization as far as the team in Michael's been more of them in the background I actually did not know that he was dealing with that with cancer did you can I did not know that's why this is this release popped up in my inbox from the Chicago Bears organization and mediate Lee kind of took took you back a little bit easier to name a cast your vote obviously immediately think bears and Michael the casket was huge party organization co founder of the team's charitable foundation bears care in two thousand five they've done a ton of great work there over twenty million dollars donated since it was founded some yeah and I I I Dan Pompei tweeting I think it's very accurate he leaves behind a complicated legacy but was a good man rest in peace like there's there's been so much you know he was kind of like the the front man for bad team not you know staying together and I've you know many of the players what what it what what how would you describe his legacy with the bears hi he was fans with the players I mean he was never can you know use it was never the popular guy he just wasn't the people looked at him as sort of you know I I I eight it feels like it was maybe about the money in it maybe was just the hard line guy that had him as as the bears are saying in their statement like you had to make a lot of you know difficult decisions that may be made him a less popular but you know here's a guy who obviously had tremendous tremendous love of the Chicago Bears of everything that families been able to accomplish and I guess you know it was was put in a tough spot we're gonna reach out to a Dan Hampton and try to get some of the eighty five guys on here a two let's talk about Michael McCaskey be interesting to hear from those guys but you know it at the time look he was he was right there hold up the trophy in nineteen eighty five right and then there's that team as celebrated as they are there's also the they should have won it again and never did and some people you know pointed a finger at Michael McCaskey for that which you know me perhaps was unfair indeed a ton of great work in the begin just reading through this release did you know he had a role in the broadcasting world carm to director WTTW I did not know that to what is what in the world to the when you it says he was a director of W. T. D. W. the Chicago based public television television station I did not know that serves two years in the Peace Corps volunteering teaching science English and music to junior high students in Ethiopia graduated from Yale in nineteen sixty five yeah a long list here of what Michael McCaskey did throughout his career yep so and that's the other thing to look somebody in the public eye you don't know everything what they're doing and I love that part of his legacy it's was stuff that I wish I had you often have headaches the experience of my life yeah well you know I mean this I don't know when a certain one of tai's death into to what that with the pandemic and things like that within the sports not going on but the far too often people judge sports personalities whether the players are front office over there play or decision making in an executive role when it comes to sports knowing little about who they are as a person right so if if there were critics of them as you said Dan Pompei called a good man this is a long long list of achievements and things he did to help his community and give back yeah and our condolences here at WGN to the McCaskey family you know anything about Virginia I mean it is mom is still alive ninety seven years old Michael was the oldest of eleven he was seventy six which saw them think about that survived by two children John and Catherine and one grandson Jackson I mean it's so I mean that is the one of if not the biggest family right in Chicago I'm in the works is then Cassidy's Reinsdorf's they've been who also supports right in all of sports I mean we're talking about Papa bear here's started the NFL started the NSR franchise the family still running the organization so while so yes condolences to the McCaskey family three one two nine eight one seventy two hundred were effort in some of the bears were supposed talk with Jake Wrobel right now from the last answer we push that back just a second here so I will continue to efforts get some guys on here but you know of course Sporting News executive of the year the first bears general manager to get that honor since is a grandfather George got it nineteen fifties in fifty six and you know he's also the guy that that that that that fired Mike Ditka nineteen ninety two so statement from bears president CEO Ted Phillips reads quote my heart is heavy as I think about Michael McCaskey Campoli if he's no longer with us his fierce love the bears was unmatched as he was intellectual capacity and thirst for knowledge the virus of subjects no quote no yeah I mean that organization to you're talking about has been there for a long long time I mean Ted Phillips is how long is he known Michael McCaskey hire Dave Wannstedt love you know good man Dave I think a a vintage Chicago Bears head coach and obviously you know incredibly intelligent guy here Yale less in nineteen sixty five lettered in football there so any word that see here he retired back in April of twenty ten so think about that it's over a decade that he is you know not been front and center and with the team with George Stepanek earned his doctorate in business from Case Western Reserve University nineteen seventy two he taught organise organizational behavior and management courses at UCLA for three years then became an associate professor at the Harvard Business School that's a resume it's it's it's amazing right well live like that think about you know what people end up doing with their lives just there's a guy who you're born into a family where you really don't have to accomplish a whole lot right you could just sit under behind and you're you're never going to get a nice weekend in the family business you're never gonna star for anything but that was not the case there was no that was not the case you know what they think about things that you know the one out of the franchise do they used to have the astro turf at at Soldier Field made the move to grass we still won't budge on grass I have if what would be I mean I don't know how you want to go back to because it's so bad get a turf in there I mean it's right isn't that the Turkey will remain under field turf as the turf monster yeah no that's true that's it but I was like I was so excited because they used to plan this like just I am hungry when I watched some of those vintage games like that just looks awful was it just a fiddling with her find it it was it it it it really was and it's the but so that was like you know if your are you fell for those guys like hands plan through fifteen these surgeries planned on that turf you know for all for eight home games a year plus through the exhibition games in there too it's all it always felt just wrong but yeah Michael McCaskey seventy six years old stick quick time out seven twenty WGN.

"You're just gonna stick with four guys given the off days, and and where does urban Santana fit and all this. Well, we are gonna stick with four initially. We don't need that fits starter till till April tenth Ervin. Santana's gonna stay back here and continued. To throw. He's fingers fully healed. Now, it's more matter of sort of building up the endurance in the repetition and come that April tenth start swimming, everything holds in that time, we need a starter. Ervin. Very likely take the ball that day. And the last thing for you is there a is there a player there were not given enough attention to maybe a newcomer or something that you that you're really excited about in in how fit into this ballclub the season. You know, it's going to be tough for it too. I think show up in the stat line necessarily, but what James McCann is doing for young pitchers. In terms of not only explaining to them how other teams view them and how would prepare for them at after being in our division for the last several years, but also helping them sort of improve upon their own arsenals and unlock those some of what we've been trying to get through to them. I think James is going to have a really big impact on us from a from a defensive standpoint for low from a pitch calling and game planning and pitcher development standpoint, which again is going to be difficult for it to necessarily show up and be attributed to him, but all of us from Ricky and all the coaches, and when we talk about what James brought it keeps coming up that that impact he's having our on our young pitchers. Overlooking looking forward to Seattle comes together. Recom- we'll see on Thursday in Kansas City. Sounds good. Thanks for having me. All right. Thanks you too. Adam Hogue and also to general manager, Rick Hahn, you know, you hear Adams voice, you think about the bears. He's actually out in Arizona doing double duty doing energy before us is also going to cover the owners meetings. And there was some news coming out of the bears today and Ryan pace daily NFL executive of the year for twenty eighteen it is sponsored by the sporting news. It's voted on by all thirty two NFL team executives pace becomes the third bears executive win the honor and the first since one thousand nine hundred five that's when Michael mccaskey won the honor. After the bears won the Super Bowl. George Papa bear house. Of course, the first to win the award back in nineteen fifty six pace being credited, of course, for his hiring of Matt Nagy. And the fact that the bears went twelve and four and one the NFC north division title their first since two thousand ten got the playoffs, and we'll just leave it at that. Because we all know what happened there. Hopefully, you have better times to come in. In the next season. Congratulations Ryan pace really doing a nice job there for the bears as a little bit of a challenge ahead of them. No, no draft picks in the first two rounds. A bears will be picking until the third round pick number eighty seven overall. And we'll see what Ryan pace does. He's made some cash doing the those late in rounds.
