"Out here. News reporter guy can't keep a job. I don't know you know six one half dozen the other. What gotta do digs. what do you have. Everyone's going to do this now. Does this open up. Jimmy potentially to the patriots or do you think they're set on having cam newton as their starting quarterback. Yeah i don't know what the word means pause to be quite honest with you. I like cama cam newton fan. I mean i would love to be an offensive coordinator with that guy. You know what all the creativity that you can. You can have your game plan But i. I didn't know that that they were gonna resign him. That kind of surprised me. A little bit Because their offense was so different than what they were when they were successful with. Tom just different kind of offense. But the patriots had a heck of an offseason as you know man they. They spent a lot of money and then now surrounded their quarterback. Whoever it might be with cam. I don't know how long he'll be their quarterback they might be in the market to get a guy for the future camps. Getting a little long in the tooth. But i'm glad for him because he's that guy's the energizer bunny he's that guy had worked his butt off and and so the patriots are going to be back in it. Yeah in the jimmy g. To new england conversation has been one. That's been happening for the last month or so fascinating. Because he knows the offense obviously. There's an alleged tiff. Between either bella check and craft and tom jimmy and they said we got to get them out and now toms out if he was to go back this would be you know this. We complete the absolutely insane. Offseason that has been the new england patriots. Speaking of the patriots. Do you know. Michael lombardi former general manager bert with us jobs. Everybody's working okay. Can you put his tweet up on screen. This is fascinating what he said here. Based on how these deals work the jets turned down this offer from the niners that means they must be taking wilson the forty nine or start at the top of the draft with this offer in find some team that says yes now. I'm not sure if he knows that. That's how it works or just how that usually goes. Do you tend to agree with that narrative. If that's the case that they go to jacksonville said hey we want to make some plays to the jets. And then ultimately dolphins are. We'll bite on this thing. Do you think and then very well might be true. And michael barr. He's been around the block. he's he's a good worker and he's You know he's been with belichick can save and and he's been around and he knows how that works with the draft drafting trays. But yeah that makes sense. You start at the top of the draft i. Evidently i didn't. I didn't think that the jags would wanna move onto their this philosophy. I had with the jags about if you just draft trevor lawrence which i think everybody feels they will and they say well tomlin and trade him. Yeah i said at radium to houston. And i get to shawn watson. Who's ready made houdini. All right and and throw in a one to make him do it all right and houston says we got the. Sean really doesn't want to be here. We got a quarterback. We did get a young quarterback at our fans would be happy with and we got another one because we're short ones and so then everybody's happy. It's a win win. little traits. Mary emerge i. Will we have to ask this about the shawn watson because the shawn watson trade rumors have slowed down immensely. Because there's something much more serious happening in the real world with shawn watson right now now you're talking strictly on the field obviously in. We're all hoping whatever is happening off the field if it happened disgusting by the way. Let's get some justice if it didn't. Let's see what that is. But why not russell wilson to your same thought there is that not something you think. Pete carroll may be does with okay because they chicago offered to starters a third in three first round picks in seattle. Say no to it. And then it's alleged that was that was they offered. They offered the seahawks the world and they said no mean. Nobody's gonna offer more than that. What are the freemen ranch. What if it was trevor. Okay you're gonna quarterback that's trevor. You'd have to offer. I guess what two more ones or the dolphins who decided all those in the dolphins now have a lot of picks they can make some moves to if they had to do that thing mooch. There's a lot that can hypothetically happen. And i think ultimately you know this was sixteen years of coverage. Probably nothing going to happen but it does feel like. There's a lot of things that could happen. There's an update from the forty niners. Moods we appreciate you by the way being on here with us as we're going through this whole thing. The forty niners are keeping jimmy garoppolo. According to the team steve white says that john lynch told him yes. We decided to go ahead and do this. Once it was finalized. The first thing we did was called jimmy to let him know. He's still on our plans. That's dove climate. Reporting what steve whites reported. What does that mean moats. What does that mean. i means jimmy. G. is on the team. Today i mean and i g got up to the super bowl you know. And he's he's won. I mean the guy is a great. Winning percentage in east play very well from jimmy's been heard a little bit right and so I mean i can't imagine. I can't imagine jimmy g. was sit around if these healthy and and like being a backup while they develop another quarterback and he certainly in the in. They got all over there to nick. And these Is play well at times. And so i can't imagine that he would be there. I'd appreciate. I appreciate though that steve had to ask john lynch had to ask them there in john. Lynch is like a steve. Listen have given you enough to talk about today. I'd already given you enough now. Now we gotta go into that. Yeah he's still on our plates. Yeah we told okay. Thank you steve. Now i'm going to try to watch the guy of looking at draft but that's number three overall very fascinating this entire business. What do you have connor mooch. Because all signs are pointing to zach wills and dicing the defense today. What do you think the jets are going to do with. Sam darnold would could. They even get four him in return. You know what i i. I'm kind of a sam darnold fan. I want him to be better. Play better win more games in you know if they draft the if they drafted big tackle right there And keep sam darnold. I think they still have a chance to win robert socialize. It's going to be a good coach for them and they've already made some good moves in in have been pretty darn active. You're grabbing corey. Davis and draw davis and they're going to be competitive robert. Solly you know already went to school where. He went to the northern michigan university where i went. Up is that that's where it is. You're you're you know you geography down. We have enough air. Canada rights-based potanin up there north of canada..

"Well hold i will seriously around us around around Daddy huge smell better. Listen everybody talks about gunpowder for the walk. Everybody talks about in wants to talk about andy. Dalton strictly because of his hair keller k. Strictly because he was with the fucking bengals for a long time succeed with them. You're remember andy. Dalton got flattened paved road over as quarterback for dallas cowboys. Nobody helped him up. What did they do got back on. That horse became cowboy again. Gets in the huddle they start. Winning aims at in the middle of the midst of absolute chaos down. There and andy dalton starts winning games cincinnati no indoor practice facility they gave hendrix in sixty million dollars or something like that. Congressional the bangles six thirty million guaranteed or something like that sixty million dollars. I had no idea there was that much money in the bengals organization. Because if they're doing that for a great pass rusher last season for the new orleans saints if they're doing that you got to think they're building indoor facility at some point for these guys training get those extra rep's shot who day. Yeah who day nation. The bengals organization seems to be buying in a little bit if spending sixty million on him you gotta think that they're going to at least build an indoor facility which takes me back to the point. Andy dalton was winning games. The bengals team when the organization didn't even try to win. I would assume that ain't still got some good football after him. Now is aiming dalton to shawn watson which was allegedly gonna be a bear at one point. Is he russell. Wilson which was allegedly gonna be a bear at one point very recently. I would assume that a lot of people are saying no. No no no. But andy dalton would not do what falls in trubisky did last year throwing that bears offense. I would like to say that would be an upgrade. Andy dalton would be an upgrade over metro. Bisky halley played last year. Not his potential mitchell. Trubisky has the potential to be maserati. Mitch mvp mitch again. Yeah nickelodeon valuable player. I think he has the potential to be great. Andy dalton is going to come in there and he's going to do with andy dalton does that's all he does. You have no idea what's coming with. Mitch you have no idea what's coming with falls. You have no clue what's happened. Andy dalton would be quite an upgrade. But he's not what they thought they were getting just day or two ago. That was russell. Fucking wilson constantly. You think you're getting rush. You think you're getting to sean. But hey we still got dalton. Guess what they need a guy to go out and go. Nine and eight next year. Dalton can do that yes he can't go to the county fair and they ran teddy bears the big ones they give you like a fish instead equivalents goldfish. Long by the way those goldfish. You're talking about one just eats not the alpha fish. Well it depends as long as you have them in the right water because those things are real tough around other fish you should see him in water that is imperfect standards in chicago water. Not good for any dawn. I think that beta fish that you're referring to is andy dalton because you're saying he's downgrade from the big stuffy fluffy animal at the carnival. That was russell wilson. I think that's rude. Andy dalton swims in any river. Brigham nick hayes. Yeah land ocean with love. Andy dawn brigham in new england. He'd be a perfect guy for cam. Go into and you could probably get them five six million dollars. That's that's the max right. We don't know what any of these deals are there. Remember michael lombardi put out. That deals worth fourteen million. And it's actually three million dollars. It's a lotta line. What's going on other day when you got to a little bit. You turn out on cam. Yeah you are jersey right now. Eight from day. One of cam. Newton being announced as the patriots quarterback you're out on the patriots quarterback day. One i mean he coming back up startled. Remember that you said day why taped over the brady jersey for cam. Newton in i was in on new in from day. One more in a more complex talking about on the outside talking about you on the outside. I love competition jersey on that doesn't cover out how you feel on the inside of competition on the inside now but on the inside. You're not bought in on cam newton. You're buying jersey. You're by you're right. He's competing with them. Yeah you didn't even think that cam. Newton deserved the number one because pat. The patriot is the elder statesmen on. The team was number one. I wouldn't say you can put all these jerseys on okay. You can do all the lichen on every iconic saga production. What is out there. Okay and you go in the comments section meal. Let's love you. can you can do all that. But inside when moment pops. Out for you to showcase whether or not you're all in on cam newton you're out on him and by the way not the only one. I think a lot of people are saying that you shouldn't feel that bad but we just don't want to hear the full gezi bullshit around the office about you. Love and cam. Newton who gives you bullshit. I love and guess what. We didn't do a whole lot of that last year. You know we can go back to the eight touchdowns ten picks but like lombardi throwing izzo at tight end. Well go get a whole new team. Can't do comes out. And he dice every single defense in the league. We're not a whole new competition. Okay so i just want everybody to know that somehow in this particular studio right now everybody but the patriot fan team. Kim newton. that's interesting with jersey though. But that's what we're saying.

"Got kyle orton and a bunch of draft picks. It really didn't work out for them. But that way so i think you have to be really careful if the right deal comes along but i think teams are a little bit concerned about trading. A boatload picks for one player. When that one player can't get couldn't win games for houston last year. It takes more than one player. My point though i and i hear you i guess last one to push On this subject. Is you know one one team can offer you a twenty three year old quarterback back in tool or sam darnold and i understand. That's not the shawn watson but when they can offer you that as well as a top five pick including in the case of miami your own number one overall pick back at third overall and other first round picks over the next couple years as the jets in the dolphins can also amass their their choices to to send. Isn't that better than this. Holdout alternative for the texans. You can actually get right. You can actually well but the problem is he controls where he wants to go. The rumor is he doesn't wanna play in new york. The rumor is he doesn't wanna play miami. He wants to play in denver and san francisco. So now you're knicks areo and now you're trade options are limited especially when you know. He controls where he says he wants to go. So say he says. I only want to go to san francisco. Only go to san francisco. Well now san francisco is all the leverage in the trade so all the traits scenarios you go through if he doesn't want to go the jets he says i'm not going so it's fool's gold to get that tick. I can't make that deal happen a couple minutes that i have with you. Michael lombardi We are on raider nation. Radio nine twenty. Am and you're working with the great brent musburger visa and things of that nature. What do you think of what the raiders have done. So far and what their future holds in division where justin herbert. It looks like Obviously the chargers have struck gold. There we know the chiefs are the chiefs. What do you think the raiders are doing now. And how quickly can they challenge for this division. Do you think well. They've got to get much better on defense rich mean last year. They felt like you know that they could improve defensively. But they're not anywhere near there. You know doc. Way is an addition to play in the gus bradley system. The here's the issue. That i have you watch the nfl closely. Last year people that ran the pete carroll system of defense gus bradley defense but dan quinn defense. These teams that ran that the down in jacksonville. They've struggled unless you have a dominating defensive front it's hard to run. That san francisco was great running that with robert july when they had when they had both Solomon thomas they had the forest buckner when they had arm step when they lost some of those players. It wasn't the same defense. So for the raiders. I think the concern. I have is can. They play multiple fronts and coverage on defense. And do they have enough talent and are they gonna have enough money to get those players because they spent a lot of money the last few years to try to improve the team and it hasn't gotten to them yet you know. They've got a whole it right tackle. They're probably going to waive the center. Hudson they're gonna make some other moves to try to create some situations for their team but defensively you know they've got to be able to hit. They don't have the coverage people in the back end. Abram has been a disappointing as the first round pick. He misses way. Too many tackles and they don't have the ability to win up front to rush the passer in a way to. Where would you watch them. Play tampa bay. Brady all the throat. And i think that's going to be a real issue for does Dallas had the horses to run that defense since now. Dan quinn is there. You're hearing the cowboys after they signed and the offense is kind of set as they can hopefully get some of their offensive. Linebacker healthy that The addition of quin alone will help Coagulate a little bit more on that defensive side of the ball for dallas. Do you think they've got the horses to run that that day. I love dan quinn. He's an emotional. he's he's one of the best one of the great guys in the league. But you know one thing defense is try to do to make. Quarterbacks uncomfortable is confused them and when you watched atlanta last year when dan was the head coach and and they were running his defense after he left. They got better on defense and they changed what they did. I think dan needs to change a little bit. What he's gonna do and it's gonna be an improvement with the dallas defensive front because if you come out run one front one coverage and the quarterback knows it. You're going to have to have really good players up front to win. So that's gonna be the challenge thousand. I think dallas knows. They've got to get better front. I mean lawrence is good. You know they've gotta get more players like that. Before i let you gimme a good al davis story. What many of them rich you know. He got well well like we were sitting in. He wanted a draft a certain player in the second round. And we fought him for his kidney jordan. Back we ended up picking We ended up picking kirk morrison and the third. It was a big debate whether we were going to pick 'em so when it came time to make our pick the third we had an extra third round pick we said. Why don't we pick back here. He said heck i. i didn't want him in. I wanted them in the second. I don't want him in the third. But what what that means. Don't ask me to explain. I can't but that's sweat. And he didn't say the word heck ditty right light. The flame light the flame Okay so everybody can check out. Your podcast world podcasts. Or gotten the gm shuffle You ought non virk correct and then you're working with visa and brenton athletic congrats all that. And let's let's chat more often. Mike accu rich paul. Anytime appreciate your. That's mike lombardi of the athletic and these in and so much more right here on the rich eisen show could stuff with lombard right there. All right let's Let's take a break to use a phrase that stuart scott once said oh. Tj must be because he's on a roll. He's already said that he's on. The price is right and he's booked a major guests for tomorrow. Show i don't know what he's gonna do for our three is all. I'm going to say abracadabra you and deondraye Chimed in on free agency..

"Campaign. nixon nets at a heck of a game last night. Fun at Freaks me every time. I see julius randle and bernard kings jersey. He got Kinda screwed at the end of the game. Last night is kyrie. Put his hand on. The ball on ball goes up in the air. I mean he goes up in the air. He comes down with a call for traveling and he goes kinda crazy so and then we're we're learning. Anthony davis may be out for another month and The lakers lebron tweeting about free. Ed i guess he's not that concerned tweeting about bill. Bill check spending a bunch of money and free agency which is Everything that's going on in the nba and lebron's world. I guess And in terms of spending like crazy in free agency. Michael lombardi will be on this program. He's known bella check for decades. He tweeted out by the way in the middle of yesterday's free agency frenzy after jonnu smith kicked it all off And then matthew. Japan comes from the ravens he he tweets out. The patriots. are aren't done yet just beginning and then sure enough today hunter. Henry's comes with jonnu smith. She got two tight ends to wide receivers nelson galore and kendrick bourne matute on jalen mills as well. That's just for starters bill You know We're doing the math Bill ballot check spent eleven billion dollars already on free agency. And it's kind of crazy. We were wondering You know how's it gonna look with cam will now. We have a better answer. I mean a lot more weapons at his disposal and this is going to be the story of the twenty twenty one regular season born out of free agency last year. Obviously was tom brady. And what will happen with the Box going and getting. Tom brady As a free agent And how it would all work out. Well kind of worked out now. It's going to be what what's the patriots season. Going to look like after they went absolutely hog wild and free agency. And why did they do that. Albert and albert albert. No our number one from sports illustrated saying well. It's kind of an admission that The drafts the last several years didn't hit because They're filling all these positions that didn't get filled in the draft and they have a bunch of cap space because normally you're spending money to keep your own players if you didn't draft anybody worthy of keeping then you've got the cap space to spend free agency will see if michael lombardi has a different approach to this Let's take this. Let's take this phone call has been waiting all throughout the first hour. We didn't get to him. And it does kinda dovetail in. It's matt tennessee. You're here on the rich eisen show. What's up man. Hey how you doing what's going on. Hey pretty cool man Just kinda got something kind of cross my mind and i started watching your show okay. It was like what was bill. Bill checks mindset. Was he just planning the bill for brady's era then thoughts of retirement no or was he going to build in. It's legit signing that he is done you know. But who's the quarterback you know is going to be mario but from an armchair. Gm standpoint. i. I think that's a real good signing but Is bill content with where he's at and the pets outlook without bill. Check and brady. Where do you think that might go again. It's just the the sense that that You know bill saw this coming you know. The the the scenario last years it was all playing out was that the patriots thought they were in on brady all the way to the end. Then got a call a few days before brady gonna bucks same. We're not there. And that left him kind of flat footed as did the pandemic when you got guys patriot. Way guys like hightower chung saying they're not playing and And then them sticking with the the plan of hoyer and stood them through the draft for at the quarterback spot needing a omaha. Audible it in june. I don't think they saw this coming in a million years but they saw what happened during the season and they saw their cap space and they saw that the cap space was down and they saw that that only improve their chances of having sixty six million if the if the sixty six million dollar figure under the cap was under the cap that everybody thought it was going to be. That makes it less valuable right and it makes it more valuable when the cap is much less than so. Let's strike while the irons hot and again there's none of these five six year deals for thirty year olds. They're all two three four year deals for everybody underneath aged thirty into the second year their contracts to for a lot of these guys. And now it's cam now it's on cam and it's on bill and it's on mcdaniels and we'll see what they do in the draft but now because of what's just played out here a fascinating team in twenty twenty one based out of free agency now then We also talked about russell. Wilson with With albert breer and he said that John schneider who made some news when he appeared at josh allen pro day twenty eighteen. What's he doing there. When ross's their guy Point out trae. Lances pro day in north dakota. Maybe just go on. Maybe we're just going to see mount rushmore. And you just sit now. Just turn north football. See when football's going on around. I don't know i don't know i mean what that means but Russell still a seahawk as it currently stands and in terms of the defensive side of the ball. We all expected that it's.

"There as the cowboys spends a lot every year that they've done a good job of holding back and their cash outlay isn't as high as people think every single year. Well that's fascinating because it does feel like they pay somebody the biggest contract every other year at a different position and now they get the deal done which is a massive question mark around the cowboys future. Even though it's only for four years who knows what mike mccarthy is going to do with that let's pivot out of dallas and let's go to las vegas. I know you have some thoughts. Jon gruden. john. And mike may over there. At the raiders. They are making decisions. Now that tana make previous decisions not look great. They seem to be in trouble with the cap issue. They got all their offensive lineman out there. Now what do you think's going on in las vegas and how do you see this playing out long-term if you had to guess you know i think look i might may aucas really hard situation. Because he's working for a coach that is really not the best personnel guy. He's impatient he wants veterans. He falls in love and out of love quickly. I mean if he was on match dot com he would would be constantly rolling over. Constantly he falls law falls download. It's just gruden's nature. It's like if you literally give players in april by nato hate him by june traded it. How motivates himself. I wrote about it in gridiron genius. John as a coach is a good coach. john is an offensive. Coordinator is a good coach. John running your entire operation. What we're seeing in. Las vegas is the result of a guy that doesn't understand the big picture he can't put all the pieces together. Go back and read is quotes about lamarcus joyner. When he signed in they they made no sense like you signing an undersized five nine guy who's going to cover travis kelsey seriously you're gonna pay them all. This money seriously made no sense because the big picture of how to build a team is way different for coach an executive so much mike mayock though has no out here right because if he says i want to kind of take over that dude. He's being paid much less and gruden was one that got him hired right now. He works for gruden. I mean what we don't want to understand is john lynch. I don't mean to sit any disrespected. John lynch the geology. Is john lynch works for kyle shanahan mic. Mac works for jon gruden. I mean that's the way it is. And i worked for bill belichick and i was happy to do that. I didn't tell belichick wants to do why not right. That's the role you play. But what happens is ballot check. Well listen you could say bill. I don't think this is the right thing. Valid checks more of a big picture once the discount. He's the warren buffett of this. He wants to get cheaper. John wants to guy now. One of my one of my one of my in love with throw william side have non in love with nelson aguilar sign hip like you can't run a team like that. And then when you don't draft pick colin farrell fourth pick overall the draft you pick abrahams in the twenty s. He can't cover anybody at safety. Where are we going with this. Like where is the blueprint. Where's the plan on how we're going to title as where's the plant and right now derek. Cars are quarterback and everybody saying he's going to get an extension or whatever and then as soon as russell wilson's available year. A bunch of raiders. Fans like if we can get russell wilson. Hey let's do that. And i was soon gruden's the same way. Fuck in russell wilson. Let's try to do that. Will place a question mark right now. Yeah i mean he's he's very reactionary. There's no there's no plan look. He's got a ten year contract. He's got mixed ten million a year he walks in there. He really should have walked in with a plan. Here's how we're going to build this team. Here's how we're going to just dramatically build this team inch by by inch but instead he's grasping and pulling things around you'll see next year. They'll all the guys they size a year before. When are you know the linebacker mcaliskey whom our they signed. You know they're going to end up cutting those guys because they're going to be overvalued he has to get it under. He needs a strong personnel guy. That will say john. We can't do that. He needs needs michael lombardi. I would rather have twenty hours of now in one day. Do possible to deal with you. How do you know this. How do you know this. I work with john in philadelphia. I work with john in oakland and john in oakland was al davis was in between john. John couldn't make any decisions on personnel in oakland. Unless signed off on it or unless we all signed off on it you know when we signed jerry rice al. Al was not as with doing that. Because it was going to affect your james jet but we all agreed he would be a better player so acquiesced to us so there is there was. There was a lot of hurdles to go through but look at look at john independently in tampa in his drafts valuation. Look at john and oakland and his the draft evaluations and in las vegas that that says somebody like i need how building his team and what he wants. He wants to just he wanted..
Jimmy Garoppolo Is Reportedly ‘Plan A’ For Patriots At Quarterback
"So much has been made about the potential of a reunion between jimmy g. and bill be in new england. The forty nine. A quarterback is under contract for two more seasons but new england needs a quarterback and they may look to trade for garappolo that is according to a very interesting piece. That are mike. Reese put together over the weekend who covers the patriots for so well and he gets up with us earlier today. Mike for those who did not read. It gives us a sense of your thinking on the possibilities. Here of jimmy g. Coming back to foxborough so good morning green. I would say as a reporter covering the team there so much secrecy around the patriots quarterback plans so i was asking myself the question. What do i know for fact and for fact. What i know is that the patriots bill. Belichick he holds jimmy garoppolo in such high regard. And it's one thing for me to say it. But i could actually show it to you. I mean there was a picture after the forty niners handed the patriots their worst home loss in two decades under bill belichick. We're bill belichick. Steve on the field to talk with jimmy garoppolo and josh mcdaniels. The offensive coordinator was standing nearby for his. Turn to talk to jimmy garoppolo. So the point. Is this screening. If the patriots believe jimmy garoppolo is their plan a and the big gap to plan b. Now is the time for them to at least test. The forty niners commitment to jimmy g. and so then. That begets the obvious next question which is if they do decide to your point that that's what they wanna do. How do they get it done. Well got to give credit to michael lombardi. The longtime nfl front office man who was here with the patriots when the patriots drafted garoppolo in two thousand and fourteen on his podcast. The gm shuffle. He said how about sam darnold going from the jets to the forty niners who in turn with then trade jimmy garoppolo in a situation controlled by garoppolo. 'cause he has a no trade clause and you saw the respect. There was mutual between the patriots and garoppolo. Well you'd think jimmy might like the idea of a homecoming in that scenario greenie. That could work for everyone. The forty niners would pick up a lot of cap space in that exchange. The patriots would get their quarterback through they respect so much in the jets. Your jets would probably take a quarterback at number two which might be their preference anyway.

"John being the general managers problematic. But i think after. They've gone through this unless they got a blockbuster deal for derek carr. I don't think they will trade their car. I think they will end up. Trading mariota or releasing mary because they can't afford to miss a backup therein cap trouble in the sense that they've got to get below the cat plus they gotta get waller. Who makes six year. He's underpaid that got to do something about his contract they got asylum nelson aguilar. They want to sign it back so they've got a lot of issues and look. Let's face it. Can they beat the chiefs you know. Can they beat the chiefs and whatever. The chargers back away for being a really good team if they could ever get the quarterback situation. Now they've been rumored to talking to a lot of teams about quarterbacks. I thought they were gonna make a trade last week for quarterback in one of the teams back down. I don't know quite how that happened. But i think the broncos will be very aggressive. I hope they should about drew. Lock being the guys over. What was that will you just referred to. There was a trade those about to be made last week and then team. I thought there was some action on on denver. Trump was going to trade for a quarterback that i think that whether wentz they say interested in wentz whether it was somebody. I don't know quite who it was but they were getting position. A trade for somebody just didn't go through so i think my point here is san francisco and denver are both secretly active looking for quarterbacks. Well hopefully one of them will. Land carson wentz So you're saying you're saying derek carr starter next year for sure that's how you feel about the whole thing. And how do you think the big the big jump. There's is gruden's got ask himself the question. How do i replace them. And it's not mariota. Who do i get. These looks now. Here's what he has to do that. He's got to extend him. He's got two years left on a deal. he's going to have to extend his contract. He's got him on a really cheap deal right now. And that's important. Well hopefully it all works out for Derek carr and the raiders and everything. I hope they went herbert in that division as well by the way. That's going to be a problem. Patrick mahomes in that division. That's going to be a problem. I mean they beat the chiefs by the way. So they they they. They can obviously compete. Is derek carr. The guy in john gruden's is that is a great question for us to have in if you have you better make sure that you ready. These raiders fans are awesome. You know they are a very loyal bunch but a lot of them are stupid as fuck. Have yeah mike. Allegedly bill belichick brought him brandon coach in two thousand seventeen for jimmy garoppolo offense in two thousand eighteen and then brady obviously won the mvp. Is that something bell check would do or do believe that report and were you there. No i was about. I mean i know what was going on. I think that cook certainly was a first law. Nick cesario loved cooks coming out at oregon state so the organization always like cooks before he even became available so there was always ask and i don't think they were building their offense around that as much as they were trying to get an outside number one receiver to challenge that part of the field that they needed to so it gave them the option when they traded a first round pick to the saints and and and clearly. There were conversations. Stuff be different from brady to jimmy if we change. Jimmy's different than tom. Tom so good on third down underneath. Rose jimmy's gonna need. is jimmy. scott throw vertical down the field so that it needed to be a change of an offense but it wasn't that dramatic that the the the reason for cooks was the organization especially knicks. This area loved cooks okay. So let's talk about that. After watching tom brady and tampa for just like this past season he still has deep ball. He's still was good down. The field is an evaluation issue from bill belichick. That was the overall question as this information was getting released about. Brandin cooks being in there for jimmy offense moving forward and everything like that. The offense always being dinking dump almost the entire thing except for that year with randy. Then he goes on the tampa and the guy has his best year throwing the long ball he's ever had is an evaluation issue and bill belichick. Because you guys didn't know that he had that in them still or what do you think. Well no i think cooks at one of his best years in the nfl patriots. I mean when you go back. i'll look at it right here. When he played for the patriots in his career i mean he was. He played really well for them. That year. For new england You know he started fourteen games. Sixteen point six yards at catch. He had seven touchdowns had sixty five catches. I mean sixty point. Five per catch is pretty damn good. I mean tom through the ball. They needed a my point. Is they needed an outside receiver and you know and was. Tom always precise on throwing the ball outside. Not all the time. But i think what he had a legitimate player on the outside like cooks he was much better. There were often times where they were guys that were playing on the outside that we're not quite good enough they're already tweeting about a perm michael lombardi on the back of asia. The broncos were close to trading for quarterback and already starting upon out there pies on..

"That was agreed intro. Thank you i wish. My mother was around to hear that all right. Let's talk real. Quick ted talk was awesome upgraded in a. I've listened to a few ted talks on flights because that's series was available in the back of seats for a while. i would listen to yours again for sure. A lot of references to walsh in ballot. Check and everything where you've been around going into championship weekend here Mr lombardi michael lombardi you. Whenever you're on a team that's going into this weekend and i was. I was young. But i didn't really pay attention but from a front office standpoint. A higher up simply coaches standpoint. What are you helping you just opening your team at this point. Hey we've already put all the and we just got to hope that our guys show up. What are matchups this. What is the mindset of somebody. That's been in the front office of an nfl team going into this weekend. I think you've gotta get the players to not be nervous imply like it's a game in october. You know wall. She used to dress up as a bellman. One time before the super bowl and in detroit so he wanted to players feel relaxed that he laid in the locker room. We played at stanford when we played the dolphins and it gets about plans fast. He always believed these games. You need it simple game plans. You needed like a clean. Chris game plan execute the things. You do really well and then play really fast and just make sure that every third and short situation. You've got multiple outs to do it. You've got a lot of fourth-down calls at your bag that you can go to and then just let it go and then when you get the lead don't stop. Don't get conservative in the last ten minutes of the game. Mike what do you. What do you think they'd tell the defense san like when affects maybe have a simplified game plan. Obviously they know third down as big house. The defense make adjustments. But i think the defense has to kina defense because the crowd lewis has gone this weekend. So you know you you just gotta rip really urge. They get off on the ball. I mean that's the most important thing because they don't have to worry about here on the snap count. They can see it. They that's snap. Count is the great equalizer in football. Gives the offense the advantage now without ground. Always the defense has it so i think this is a game. Fundamentally for defense we gotta talk really. Well no yards after contact. We've got to go. After the football we got a force turnovers and we got to play fast as hell. And how do we create turnovers when defensive linemen run and chase the ball and tackle somebody from behind. that's what creates fumbles. that's what creates turnovers. We gotta get that from defense and we'll get your official predictions on the game. This weekend on hammered down about an hour from now. Youtube dot com slash. The mcafee show excited to hear those. Let's talk about some nfl news. Let's move away from championship weekend. Real quick motorcity dan. Campbell mc dc. He continued to electrify microphones. Yesterday it was his press conference this morning. It was good morning football. I assume he's on others. How is he not a head coach. Maybe fifteen twenty years ago. How is he not already. Maybe the name of the trophy that the super bowl winners get. How is this guy not the guy in coaching yet. Lombardi and what do you expect. Not a mike you know. I think he's as long as he stays true to what he is. He can't change. It's got to be every day. You know and i think this needs graduation. Time stick works beggaring college where the kids graduate every three or four years. You know pro flyers they it every five years with do contracts so it might work but as long as he stays consistent with it as long as she's able to do that i think a lot depends on defense coordinator office coordinator intellectually how that works. But i see as a head coach. I see him as a leader. And i like that. I think we need more of that in the national football league. I think we need more guys watching the game then looking at the call sheets so i like that and i hope he's successful. This transposes other guys to get head coaching jobs. That are leaders. You know for me. I've said this. Many times. If i were roger goodell i would spend a lot of money setting up leadership academy at call. Jim brown leadership center. I'd do it in some. nfl towel. And i would invite as many minority coaches to come at ten. I would teach leadership year round at that clinic because that's the only way we're going to help. Minority coaches become head coaches in the nfl campbell's an example of what the program could look like if it were successful and there's a lot of people by the way that are going to say they do not want their head coaches to look like that but what you're referring to is as opposed to just a strictly xs knows person like actually being an overall because young coaches that have gotten hired over the last couple years. Just play college now. Do they have experiences leaders. Maybe in their youth sports or something like that but they're strictly known as playcallers you. I want to clarify this. Because i don't want people to think that you're you're saying that more coaches should look like dan campbell. You're not saying that. What you're saying is more coaches should resemble people that are trying to set the tone for the entire building as opposed to just a playcaller right. More like mike. How mike. Tom mike tomlin does it. His way fellowship. Does it his way horrible. Does it his way campbell's going to try this way..

"There's a lot of shit to talk about. We'll do that right now. Since beat bites wine was an absolutely glorious one yesterday week. Sixteen of the nfl basically wrapped up ago. One game tonight but a lot of week sixteen is done and where do we sit. Well in the afc. There's five teams that are currently battling for three spots. Who's gonna get him. Who's not who's in who's out. There's a lot to still be figured out on the nfc side of things. Some teams stink. Who didn't stink before. Some teams are great. That sucked worse than anybody has. In the past there a lot to figure out dissect and today we hope that you will call us at one. Eight eight eight mad dog sick overreactions. Overreactions from the twitter verse is sent out a bird. Call us me hashtag pat. I don't want to overreact. Became the number two trend in the united states. Shots us shot the us shelter. The people shout out to everybody that is going to rock with us today. Including in rappaport in about twenty minutes cow juice. Use check of the san francisco. Forty niners in santa clara and arizona who beat arizona yesterday or two days ago with. George kittle playing great football. We'll talk to the juice a little bit and also michael lombardi will be joining us to talk about. What would he be doing with his team right now. If he could rest or play in the final week of the season for instance. The pittsburgh steelers get a win over the indianapolis colts yesterday. Okay coach kind of collapsed. Recipes handed the steelers victory. Basically the joe. Flacco offense was in full force for ben rothlisberger. Let's go and get a passing pass interference or or a holding call and let's move down the field but the code basically collapsed. Yesterday it was sad scene. Now the steelers lock up the afc. North congrats them winning the afc north. Next week they play the browns. That game was supposed to be for the afc north if they had lost to the coach yesterday but instead they already clinched. They already have a playoff spot. Would you rest your team week. Seventeen if you're the pittsburgh steelers had an early biweekly. Didn't even know it was a buy week in week. Four would you give the boys arrests before trying to go on a run to number seven or would you say hey we just learn how to play football in the second half. Do not need slow that down. I don't care how much these boys need. They just figured out how to play football game. The pencil star on deep ball. Shout to ben rothlisberger looked like he got an immense amount of weight off his shoulders wherever every completed that to johnson. What's that well you know. You gotta assume that at halftime. Maybe they had been workout some kinks in his system. Whatever it takes whatever it takes. Everybody saying that ben beat is blowing at halftime. And that's why they came out in the second half more completely different team. I'm not saying they're saying people on the internet are saying it. But what do you do with that particular situation. How about the bills tonight. Let's say the bills get a win. Then the basically locked in a number two seed. Do they want to play next week against the dolphins who need a win to potentially get in. There's a lot to be deciphered and we'll do that. Today's best as we can couple of cleaning notes here attachment is in massachusetts for the holidays visiting his future in-laws type. We'll make sure bob. We'll miss you have a good time up there. Hope it is fantastic. Zito woke up this morning for some cold like symptoms. So he's not coming in digs our friend last week. Who missed the end of the week this weekend. Actually late last week. He did test positive for covert k which led to our entire office. Getting tested corner got tested. Its negative gummy got tested. It was negative foxy got tested. It was negative. Man surrey got tested. That was negative. Nick tested negative. I got tested. It was negative so somehow diggs got it. We were able to contain it with our protocols. We've been utilizing in the office. Dig had flu like symptoms. He said the last few days today he woke up feeling much better. He will have to now. We got to figure this out because we haven't had this in this office. Do we make you miss. Twenty one days where the big ten james harden seven tests or whatever it is or do we do the five negative like now we have to figure out our roll back in plan and we shit on a lotta people. Okay we should on the commissioners. Then we've gone after people for not having protocols in place now we find ourselves in that exact situation. I think three negative tests out of the digs will be what will get him back into the office. Hopefully he'll be able to do that by the end of this week and we'll get him back next week but just know that our protocols you're in his office worked we contained it and i feel damn proud. I really do feel bad about that. Like whenever days felt sick he went and got tested. We didn't know his results but then there was a real moment there was like he's he said he's puking you said it's like all right. We're going to find out if the way we've been operating in. This office was good or not. We contained it fucking right. I feel so good about unbelievable. I mean look at the studio tour this close and we're still socially set something to really be proud of and this is not overreaction. This is probably the going forward the standard for how you should in office situation if you need us to come talk to your off. We can't just fuck and hand over the keys. We'll get a consulting fee for sure absolutely buckingham. Obviously we hope dig survive. How well of course. We hope to survive. Zito feels better than he comes back tomorrow and he's test comes back negative but everybody else has tested negative we all feel good digs teas and he will be calling us from the cova cave. I do believe today at some point. We'll get some digs because digs went. Eleven betting last days. What yes bowl games and the nfl hits four hundred yesterday. He is hot to hear from him even if he's in a state of potential flu and by the way his wife didn't even test positive interesting a lot of time to go hunting winners tony so he's locked up in a room in his house k. His wife in the lab is somewhere else yet digs just in the covert game is nice. Second things making things happen. We'll talk to him big weekend football at boston. Connor the guy that you tackled that's right..

"He doesn't WanNa let down Tom or whatever, and I think he's trying to come back but there's a lot of people that are like, Hey, the buccaneers seem to be hidden astrid now granted. Chris Godwin's going to be out for at least a week because of a fractured finger something that he got this weekend. But there's a lot of people were like, why are we trying to fix something that maybe is in brokering now that could potentially be a disaster in the locker room. Some people think that I'm not saying we do but there is that thought how do you feel about how do you balance that alongside Al? Adding talent to if you're a general manager or thank you know the cultures got to help. Right. So I think he's probably told them look I got to tell you I was with them for thirteen days. I, got he won't be a problem I promise you. I'll handle him and I think the same thing could happen up in Green Bay arises like I got dude I'll handle it. You know Davante Adams of me we'll take we'll. We'll get this under control because it'll help us now do I want to stay with them for six years probably not that marriage bolt last but for the next ten weeks i. Think, we can make this thing work I. think there's a part of the season where you have to really evaluate your team and say, we really have a legitimate chance to get the super bowl legitimate chance to get their Baltimore has a Kansas City has the Pittsburgh has it. You know Tennessee has they need to strangler defense, but there are some teams that might be playoff teams maybe New England makes it maybe they don't but they're not one player away from really making themselves Super Bowl team they need more than just that. Very interesting speaking in New England Mike Obviously. Everyone's talking about the struggles on offense but the defense didn't force upon against the broncos or the niners till the fourth quarter. So my question for you about the Patriots is, do they just fucking stink or are they going to turn around and this two-game skid? That's a great question. A lot of people are asking that question other people I think they lacked team speed on defensive team speed on offense. I think that they tried to play a lot of nickel against Denver. They try to get faster by plants, smaller people at the cat city and they don't have enough power ducker missile attack was in San Francisco. They did it set the edge I think they need to improve. There's no doubt in their talent level. They're very young on the best and I think that's costing them and I think the other thing is remember when you're Mike linebacker slow. Your Mike Linebacker is slow defenses. In Bentley's a good player, but he's not fast. So their defense is slow and you could attack the edges of their defense because they're slobs and that's one of the biggest issues they've gotta get faster on defense and the way you do that how do you know teams fast on the Goto the stats sheet and look at how many forced fumbles the creates not how many? How many they create because it's the truth theory power and mass equals violence and the ball comes out and the Patriots just don't do that. They don't have enough physicality of speed and defensive front seven degree a problem. What did you think of decay metcalf speed on defense the other night that was outlandish dude that was unbelievable and I get you know his effort was more unbelievable than. Acting. He never gave up on the play and his. Team for. On and we see that for then we watch any and get hit no cowboy players over there to fix them low. Hey, that's that's messaging in lock assess message. Hey, that can't happen by Jerry Jones we have a clip clip Jerry Jones getting interviewed this morning I'd actually want to hear you react to this because you've been a general manager you've been up there at the top where Jerry Jones sits he's getting interview now about the locker room in this was we have this foxy. His response responsible. He basically told the guy that shot up in the middle of it because I think Jerry Jones getting sick of either seeing the headlines about the locker room or whatever he's trying to bury. This is his answer here where do you? Where would you have a leadership? Is An experience Ford? Is it a Thailand board? Is, at, latest trying to be cute here, the answer. The answer is no, I'm asking. There's dot a willing to shut up my. You. Know. When I go into the locker room, there's leadership for in my. Then after that line right there two sets when I go into the locker room national leadership or well, they're never gonna not tell the owner of the managed writing their cheques. If there's a void, they're gonNa tell him what he wants to hear. That's part of leadership. That's what happens to you. When you own the team people I, tell you what you to hear. You GotTa have some contrary views of what's going on in Jerry cans see it. Look Jerry's in a profession where I know is in the hall of fame but he got their first markings heels bill parsoes Once said about Jerry, Jones, he could talk with cat off the top of a fish. He's really good that. He's really good but his footba government is what needs most today. So he's got to decide what's wrong with his team players. Coaches are steep when you give up one, hundred, seventy, three yards, a game Russia, and you can't hold anybody under forty points. You've got problems on all three areas but you get. US, where's the key are the key our team? So, there's leadership void in those areas. As a general manager you don't need to walk in the locker room to know that just watched the tape watch practice what they're teaching and what they're doing on. Sunday. That's the connection practiced execution becomes game reality if you can. Then, you're really best making a mistake and Jerry is showing that he's really more of a fans that he is a truly a football expert because he's asking the question based on what people tell them. It's what he needs to know what he needs to observe the answer, the question why. Oh. Jeez, that was incredible. What an answer right there. So you're saying like your answer in of itself is already showcasing that you are out of touch with your actual team in what's happening now, the interesting thing here though is. Whatever he was running the team right way back in the day he had success. Right? There was excessive assumed that's potentially because a coaching and everything like that. But people always fall back on that response whenever people say that Jerry Jones get his hands out of the football side like. To have a little bit of a dynasty type run with the cowboys back in the day whenever he was running it was that him was that somebody else has just lost Jimmy. Give them all the credit in the world. He deserves the higher. Jimmy Jimmy nobody thought Jimmy was terrified is politics but he are Jimmy, paid a million dollars a year paid a ten million dollars in ten million dollars contract your ten years the National Football League went beserk but Jerry was so smart. He went to Apex, which is no longer a clothier out in business anymore, which would be the equivalent of Nike or Reebok or Adidas, or Puma whatever, and he went to them and said, look you can control my sideline. I'll give you all the cowboy paraphernalia. You pay me ten dollars you pay me ten million dollars for the next ten years they said sure. So there's Jerry there's Jimmy's contract covered right there jerry pace and put all their merchandise on and that started the NFL controlling the sidelines that started the NFL having Carol deals. Before go back to some of those old tapes, you'll see bill check with a starter jacket on. You'll see ourselves tactic it off the guys were selling the sidelines like like it was our own business jerry done great business for the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL Ladies and Gentlemen Michael Lombardi. Thank you. Can't thank you enough for choosing to listen.

"Back to the conversation on the business of Professional Sports with Michael Lombardi so before the break we were talking about one of the stickier issues in at least recent memory with the NFL l. With taking a knee and calling for nick etc there are other issues. I would argue that are pervasive in the NFL. One of them being diversity adversity yes so in the NFL. Seventy percent of players are black up but never have more than twenty five percent of head coaches Ben Black if that were happening an any industry in business I imagine there would be outrage and there should be I think it's really the fault of You know I write this daily coach every every single day. It's the fault of of the. Nfl We the NFL is spent too much time. Trying to teach coaches or potential coaches about the scheme of the game. And we don't spend enough time talking about how to become a leader. How out of how to build a program how to stall a program how to become a leader and I think the diversity issue is really about our lack of training than it is about the color or the content of someone's skin? I think it's really that I think we need to spend more time with ex players and teaching them about what it is about leadership and it's not about yelling and it's not about scheme it's about how do I drive will how do I focus. How do I get this? What's the four pillars of leadership that I must adhere to? How do I build a culture? I think we're missing a completely and I think we get caught up in a scheme as opposed to teaching and I think that's why we see these completely completely imbalanced numbers we have something like The the Rooney rule you have to interview a person of Color a head coaching position correct. That's been around on for almost seventeen years now. Why isn't that working again? It goes back to training. Goes back to the even the rules put in place a rule in you could put a rule in. But if you haven't trained doesn't do you any good if you don't train people how to become really good leaders. How do you become really? How do you organize A? You're talking about hiring somebody to run a five billion dollar operation. That guy has to be trained and it isn't about. We're going to run cover to this play. We're going to run cover three next play. It's about how do I lead. Men How do I handle culture. How do I build this football team team around? How do I do that? You know and if you don't find a way to do that with people like let's take Todd Bowles. The former head coach of the New York jets really outstanding leader. A good coach. I mean he failed as a head coach with the jets but probably for the wrong reasons he failed. Eve fell because he didn't have enough support within the building. But we need more todd bowles in the NFL. Smart coach understands how to lead. We should use that as a model. Because that's really what's what's lacking you could put all the rules in an interview people if they don't interview very well we'll good or having the interview and look there's look everybody knows this. There's not a lot of great leaders out there so you got to train people how to be leaders right and I guess it's maybe just my instinct to think about these things in terms of the business world but grooming a CEO of a company for a five billion dollar company. You are any company you have to find the right person. And that's incredibly difficult but to be able to find someone with all of those leadership skills plus football skills feels right next to impossible but what do they do in the business world. I mean there's you can go to school. There's Harvard business school you'd go to Yale. What school do you go to learn become? NFL head coach. Now there's not the money there's no there's not one out there right it's through it's through hard knocks. The organization needs to help the coach with his intellectual power. Wise there he he should be spending time at at business schools. He should be spending time understanding how Jack Welsh does things or how the greatest companies do things or how how. It's all set up because that's ultimately going to help make him a better leader but we've focused too much on the skill of we should play cover three here. We should run three buzz. We should really get an over fraught underfoot you know. And that's that doesn't work right all right so onto one more of these issues I one of my favorite pieces I've ever written in all of my writing career Had the opportunity to interview Brett Farr for a drug hit invested in To help treat concussions. concussions are an enormous problem in all parts of football from little league. Peewee you know through everything Brett in in our conversation said he didn't want his grandsons to play football. And that's coming from one of you know I would argue the best players in generation. What is the NFL doing thing about this problem because it is a problem? People are getting hurt and there are affects beyond just a concussion. One Way we're one day it's CTE. It's troubled twenty years later. I think certainly I think it's an issue and it's getting at handled. I I am a proponent of I don't think any kid should play football football until Leeson Highschool I think this youth football should be flag football. I think you because what happens with young kids. Is You know if you're a fat kid in fifth fifth grade. If you'RE GONNA play guard well maybe. By the time you get the tenth grade. You're skinny talk it now. You don't WanNA play guard so you've lost interest in football right so I. I don't like contact of young players. I think we have to do a better job of helmet safety. Educating the players where to hit how to hit making making sure that they wear their paths a lot of guys wear some of their pads. Not that they have improved in that that the pads stop concussions but the they don't WanNa get slowed down they wanNA play the game a fast level you know look we MMA. I mean I don't know if there's more violent sport to nat right and they have to deal with their concussion issues to the NFL just on a broader landscape. We've got to deal with a better job and it comes through. Education comes to equipment. I just have to imagine the. NFL is in a position of leadership in terms of education. And I think that you know part of my questioning around this is just that I feel like there's been a lack of of leadership in in terms of making sure everybody but he knows it and you think about telling a player to wear the right pads right now. They don't want to slow down. They WANNA score another touchdown that's their livelihood. That's how they get a better contract. They're up again. So is there a way of ensuring that everybody grabs hands and says hey. We're going to do this all of us together. I just hard right to imagine that you gotta teach it right. So if you don't want to leave with your head you're gonNA teach tackling spent more time on tackling. We got to spend more time teaching tackling the goes back to the fundamentals. I think I think you have to do that. And and I think that the League would be very clear on what they're going to call a penalty and what they're not gonNA call a penalty and how to teach it. There has to be harmony between the club and and the officials and understanding what it is and the college games trying to do that with his helmet the helmet suspending kids for half you know. I think that certainly my husband's merit okay. We talk about someone retiring at like forty two. You know that in any other line of work would be ridiculous right about your on. CNBC but the you know. That's old for a football player is is interesting. Do you think that the fact that there's only twenty good years career in the NFL and you know obviously there are other factors to that Do you think that has any impact on the viability of the League. In the long term that the health south of the players might be an issue you know. I think we're seeing players play longer. You know Tom Brady at forty two. It's not the avocado ice cream. It's really because he's taken better care of his body. The science of a football is way better way better. I mean the medicine is remarkable and the technology and understanding of what they have to do to help themselves in their bodies and prepare is so far different than it was ten years ago. And it's going to be even different ten years from now. So that's that's that's why players are playing long or conversely the negative of that is their way faster than ever been right. There's guys out there that are doing things that just are not humanly possible. It's not not through any supplements through just training and understanding that so that be presents another player safety issue. Because they're just way faster than they were nineteen sixty and they're way more explosive than they were in nineteen sixty and so the concussions that we're getting into the sixties are way different than they are now because the speed of the game is so oh different. I think if you truly watched. NFL game from the sideline standing on the field and watching the violence. Between the offense defense alignment you would understand how big and fast these guys are and that presents. Another problem remarkable. So if you had to think about what the biggest risk to profitability of the. NFL is in the next ten fifteen years. Its sovereign the concussion problem. I think they have to definitely do that. And I think that's going to be the biggest risk but I think you know with that being said this. I think we are today a day in two thousand and twenty. I think with gambling and with betting I think this thing is going to go completely through the roof. Even though these numbers look ridiculously Dick Isley. Unbelievable I think going way for other. I think we saw five percent. Viewership go up. I think it's GonNa go for more and I think because more states get legalized betting. It's it's the perfect sport to bet on. Its once a week. It's for quarters. People think they know what they're talking about they want to do it and you know it's there's a lot of options for. Yeah well I'm excited Awesome so I am going to. Now bring out are notorious wheel here I'm opening it now here. We are spinning the wheel. All right hit the middle button and take it for a spin time to have some fun. All right rapid fire So one rapid fire question. It's the most important question I think I've ever asked on this podcast which. NFL team should just bazo spy. He should by the Seattle team. Do you think he will. Yeah I do think you will because I think Amazon's GonNa be King of all and I think we'll have a jersey with Amazon on it and it'll be a plane plane flies. The teammate says Amazon. I think gets it by Seattle. Only because Paul Allen was the owner and I think that's one of the teams you can buy cool. Okay take another spin on the wheel and in or out so are you in or out bullish. Bearish on live tweeting. The Super Bowl I'm in on it. I think I think because of the way twitter works. It's almost taking the sideline reporter out of the game because you don't need to go to her or him to get. WHO's injured twitter? We know it right away so it's got to be all right and one more spin to close out the episode so it is the one thing. So what is one Read a conversation movie or quote anything that has had the most outsized impact on your life. I it's not. It's attributed to Marcus Aurelius. But it's really not a Marcus Aurelius quote And I would say the secret. Victory lies in the organization on a non obvious I think those who can figure out the non obvious in business sports are the ones that succeed. And that's what I hope the right. My new book about awesome. Well I can't think of a better place to finish the conversation then waiting for your new book. Thank you So thank you so much Michael Coming on business casual. It was the blast to talk with. You thank thank you so much I appreciate you having me..

"So you know we try to keep the business here and business casual casual and talk about the financials and the economy et Cetera. The NFL doesn't release. Its full financials which is frustrating. But one team does the packers of Green Bay Bill. They are fan owned so they recently said that in the 2017 fiscal year revenue was four hundred and fifty. Four point nine million They had add two hundred and fifty five point nine million in national revenue including TV rights from The NFL itself so the NFL and make sure have this right the NFL Dole's how how a certain amount of money that it gets from from selling rights to games to the networks. Yes that's right okay. So that that was about a billion dollar two teams last year assuming that all thirty two teams in the League got the same amount they all do get the same amount and I think the League office takes a slice of that too okay and what the owners also do. is they a a it. Used to be that they would just deal with the league's on negotiations but now the owners deal with Madison Avenue. So they kind of know what Madison Servant Willing To pay for ADS before they even go to the networks. So there's nobody getting undercut here okay. Nobody getting undercut feels a little too good to be Taylor. I mean the viable model You know it keeps working. I think the you can't measure. I think what you can't measure in this is what Larry Tisch could measure was the viability of what it does for the programming at that network. Okay so how does it help other shows grow. How does it help sixty minutes audience? which after you know? New England plays Kansas City at four twenty five and at seven o'clock the Games over and this enormous audience gets dumped into sixty minutes and watches it like. You can't really measure that. I think that's a big part of this is to. There's there's some and I think that's where Larry Tisch probably said you know what I don't really I don't really care. I think we could do it ourselves and I think it costs them. Okay so we think about this a lot in terms of viewership ads when we think about sheer numbers. The financials here the packers were using it. As example example They are you know one of the small market teams I believe if not the smallest market and the NFL. Why do you think that the NFL doesn't share? More of its financials. In that way this is this is all all you can fight club. Is it exclusive club to get into and I think that I think that they they. Obviously you know we. We sweet talk about small markets. There really is no small markets. But you know the market value is really related to ever since everybody shares the revenues even in the preseason games they all share in the revenue so it the small. Marcus don't matter. It's really what you're can get for your your luxury the seats and all that stuff and I think some of that becomes very private information. Yeah I would imagine unfortunately for enquiring minds like mine So you have done a lot of work doc on kind of dissecting leadership within the NFL if you had to say in a sentence what the impact of NFL leadership is on profitability orgy. Say I think it makes all the difference in the world. I think that is. I talked about earlier. The value of the franchise has gone up based on the leadership of the team. Who would you say are the best leaders in the League right now or you know it's funny In one thousand nine hundred four when I first got started in the League Bill Walsh then the head coach of the forty niners honors told me he said Michael. You know we're only competing against eight teams here and I thought it was just and that was when we had twenty eight teams in the League and And I thought it was was the quarterbacks and what he was telling me was there's really only eight owners that allow their culture to really key to excel on a consistent basis right so there's really only only eight teams with a culture that can have sustainable success. And I think that's pretty much been the case you know whether it's New England Pittsburgh Kansas City you know people would say Dallas Dallas Never has sustainable success Dallas in this deck in the century since two thousand eleven games over five hundred. That's not sustainable success. That's they've won those super bowls in those nineteen years. That's not sustainable. Success because their culture is not really good now. The value of the franchise has gone through the roof right. It's gone through the roof. People title realizes with Jerry Jones bought the cowboys and he moved into the facility. He leveraged himself so far that he could heat half the building that he moved people's offices from one side of the building into the other side so he could close down and cut his. How and now? He's got this enormous you know. He's got an airplane. He's got all the stuff so you know. Is that what it takes. I think what it takes is is Jerry marketed. The team I mean Jerry Market a League I think Jerry's probably one of the greatest marketers of all time time. That's the value of French. That's why he's been able to do it but I do think the leadership is been the owners determined leadership and when the owners decide to run their NFL Ville teams like they run their businesses where they've made all their great wealth are they. That's why you have only eight teams competing interesting so there. There's a difference between a sustainable successful culture. And the sort of franchise notoriety correct. Yeah and and because we are in the entertainment industry so you you have to understand that we are in the entertainment industry. People say all the time. How does Tom Brady you know? Or how does Jared Goff make thirty five million dollars year. He's not worth it. Well you know. They don't know what Bruce springsteen makes either but nobody complains about what he makes because none of us. I think we can play the guitar. But everything's throw a football right. Like how could I make that right. Everybody's everybody's played football. He how could he make that right. He's not a football players entertainer and the value that he's getting paid tribute to what the audience was. The people are willing to pay to be entertained. And I think that since we're in the entertainment business business just like on this podcast. The number one cancer in business is the number one cancer in report is Ego would egos get involved and who gets credit for things. Destroys franchises destroys businesses. So it Kinda brings to mind this. Yes I D of players and even coaches in some instances as celebrities You know they they are entertainers. They are hired as more than just football players. I imagine ego kind of goes hand in hand with that. So is is that the expectation or you know break that experts Bella check you. Don't see them doing one. Commercial Shaw. He's got the stick you know everybody knows what the sleeves and the course attitude you say stick. I think it's who he is but I also I also think it's part of what he's preaching right. You know one of the greatest soccer coaches Over in Europe klopp Juergen Klopp of one of the things he talks about is is being authentic to what you really are. I think leaders that. Listen to this podcast. If you don't have authenticity to who you are I tell a story all the time. When you you know when Sinatra in the seventies because he had lost touch with a generation of music he started wearing Eliezer shoot like Sinatra? Leisure suit doesn't go Sinatra's. She's a Tuxedo. Coupling Guy Right so he tried to be something he wasn't and then people don't pay attention to them in the retired and came back to the garden and all of a sudden he you know and so you have to be authentic and who you are and I think that because if you let your ego becomes something different than you are people see right through that they stopped listening to and then your culture gets bad so if authenticity is is is such an important part of being a good entertainer doing your job in creating a culture of success. How come we see examples like someone like Colin Kaepernick? Who you from from at least are where we're sitting? Today was authentic to his beliefs. Stuck to what he thought he needed to do and was punished for it and look crawling. Company has every right eight to wonder why he's because there's some really bad quarterbacks played in the League Luke Falk for the jets for three games. I mean the complete argument but I think captured EXP- path that he chose to go down and I think that Capra Nick's playing play on the field. If you really do an analysis of play on the field from the time he almost threw a touchdown pass ask up in Seattle to get the forty niners to the Super Bowl. Or when he didn't win the Super Bowl to where he ended up with Chip Kelly and his last game plan against San Francisco it it was really a different player and he stopped running the ball as much as he did in the past. So there's the the football player and the social activist and I think what happens to what I'm not saying and this is fair or not but I think what happens is there's risk reward right if I take a risk with Colin and what's my reward. If he's a great player I'll take the risk if he's just an okay player why would i. I think that's really where the conversation is the optics. Don't look great. There's no doubt there's no doubt they don't look good because when you watch some really bad quarterbacks play you know you say why is it. He planned right and I think that it's all about. I could manage this this bad guy. I can't manage this now. Only do I get a bad quarterback. Also get a bunch of a bunch of satellite trucks parked in front of my building. You know and I'm on CNN every single single day and you know whatever he says is going to go viral and we're about a t remember. The name on the front in any industry is more important than the name on the back. And when you bring somebody in whose whose name on the back is going to generate a lot of interest you better make sure that's really what you want. "You won't hear anywhere else. You're about to hear a preview of elite lead that looks at what really went down after the blown call in two thousand eight. NFL playoff game between the rams and the saints while you're listening go subscribe to delete on Apple podcasts cast or wherever you're listening right now there's also a lincoln episodes notes. That will take you there in last season's. NFL Playoffs as every football fan remembers the New Orleans Saints were on the verge of a trip to the super bowl breeze that that played for one of the worst. I calls in sports history going crazy as there's no right on the same sideline but it was all anyone could talk about for days the bad call you had saints fans screaming last night glaring case of pass interference one of the most obvious case you'll ever see and it wasn't penalized and it led to an unprecedented response from saints fans billboards boycotts federal lawsuits against the NFL including report of a possible class action lawsuit against the NFL filed by people who lost big money betting on the same the issue even ended up on the floor of the US Senate. The state of Louisiana is outraged because of what happened in the Superdome last Sunday today. We're GONNA talk with the Athletics Larry Holder a football columnist who lives in New Orleans about why saints fans have taken their quest for justice to new extremes and we'll hear why neither the rule change that came from all of this nor yesterday's rematch between the two teams has changed how saints fans feel from wondering on the athletic. I'm Cathy Davidson and I'm unders Kelco. It's Monday September sixteenth and this is the lead it felt like something was there is something of emotion and passed because you Cassini. This isn't a story here the athlete it stays with you. AK- what's at bonders well before we get started. This is the very first episode of the lead and and since you and I are the hosts I thought maybe we should just quickly explain what the show is so. The lead is the show. I always wish existed an I. I always wished I could have listened to you. I'm a sports writer obviously but I was a sports fan. I it's really all about great stories great stories from great sports reporters who you are all over the country and on the ground I mean these are journalists who live in these cities and no these teams and no these players but you don't have to be a fan of those those teams or those players to care about these stories for example in this first episode you talk to Larry Holder who has covered the New Orleans saints for Almost fifteen years. There's about why this terrible call provoked such an unprecedented reaction and talking to Larry. Really helped me understand Dan. Weiss aints fans did what they did. It's really something anyone could identify with so. Should we get to the story. Let's go for it so Larry. Let's start with a very basic question. How important is football is the game of football to the city of New Orleans. I'll just put it to you this way. When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans August two thousand and five and of course everyone one is recovering from the storm people. Are Literally taking their FEMA checks to by saint season tickets. That's how important the saints are to this community and I'd say without the saints returning to the city at that point. I don't think the city would have ever actually rebounded so I would say on like many if any NFL fan base within the League all right so. Let's go back to this incredible no call its last year's. NFC Championship game the saints in the Rams are tied in the fourth quarter and the saints look like they're about to score and book a trip to the Super Bowl convert. It's a good chance to saints are GonNA. Come Away with more points on this possession raucous three what happens next Tommy Lee Lewis who was really kind of an unknown receiver within the saints receiving core or he's not one of their top targets. He's basically running free down the sideline quick snap breeze and then nickell Robey Coleman in absolute absolute desperation flies basically headfirst into Tommy. Lee Lewis as drew brees has a perfect pass completed. We've no flag Tommy Lee Lewis to officials are looking at each other. One looks like he's about to take the flag out and throw it a second one basically weekly says no no no and it's not pass interference or a helmet to helmet call which is also of course illegal in the NFL and the play just goes on so you're you're in the stadium when this happens. How does the crowd react. It was utter aghast crowd's going crazy as there's no flag right on the saint sideline and then the course the replay they put it up in the on the big screens in the superdome and everyone loses their minds beautiful he was doing was was staring down. Lewis and just blame the man and you add it all together and it became aim a complete and utter debacle the rams get the ball back. The Saints Defense is probably a little bit in Shell Shock. The rams drive down the field. They kick a field goals. Send it to overtime to cease. Get the ball. First in overtime. Drew brees is hit throws an interception which means when the rams get the ball back. All they've got to do is kick a field goal and that was a preview of the the first episode of the lead to hear the rest of the episode. "I think Jimmy House domesticated John Dorsey look. This is the kind of team I want. This is what I really believe in. This is who I am you know I've started pilot flying j when and it was nothing and when it was just pilot and I bought flying J which allowed me to buy the browns. This is who I WANNA be before. I got fired two weeks before I got fired. Jimmy House amass me to write a manifesto on what I thought it would take to build a successful organization within the for Cleveland. I spent two weeks on the manifesto. I got fired three days after I gave it to him. I guess she didn't appreciate it. So the reality here is you have to it has to be built from within. It's gotta be come from him. If you WANNA take certain kind of players just tell us who do you. You want to be and then step aside. Watch it and build it and then we'll let it grow and give the people that run this organization teeth to be able to put a culture in place. I mean I write this for the day I write a daily coach column every Single Day with George Raveling one of the greatest human beings of all time and we talk a lot about culture on this daily email at the daily coach and and we talk about why culture matters why it's important that you have people that are behaving in the same way pointing in the same direction and until. Oh you get there you know look the US hockey team. People don't realize that US hockey team played the Russians two weeks before Madison Square Garden. It was sold out event the score it was ten to three. We got killed by the Soviet Union two weeks later in Lake placid with Al Michaels on the Mike. Do you believe in miracles. We won four three so you know it came together as a team and that culture can be created but it starts really it starts with the owner. What would you tell them to to Baker Mike in terms terms of his leadership role and harnessing some of that swagger that makes them great but also we see it. got a line. Sometimes I guess so. Dell's the same same or you just yeah. It's all out a line. I mean look you know he's one year in the league and he's doing commercials right now like like like like like look. CJ E. You know you make enough money on a you. Don't need the commercial you know. You don't need. Lowe's home improvement check you. You need it. We need to win. I then do all the commercials you WanNa do. I think I would tell them. Look focus focus on getting everybody better. We gotta stay in the moment. We gotta stay in the moment because you know why we are the hunted ones. I call the browns this year the Virgil Solazzo of the NFL don't Virgil Solazzo was a character in the godfather that made a move on the godfather he wanted to be a partner with them and the God father said no no no and then he tried to kill the godfather and now he went from from being the guy who wanted to be a party to be hunted one being the hunted ones a lot different. You can't sneak up on anybody and nobody's going to take you lightly. You know when it used to be years ago a couple of years ago the browns. Everybody took lightly. We're playing the browns this week. No big deal now. Everybody wants a piece of the browns now. Everybody wants a shot at the browns. Everybody wants to validate the date themselves. The browns are on national. TV not the rams they went to the Super Bowl. There's always a different narrative and I would tell Baker that we have to focus. It's going to be really hard because because the last eight minutes of every single game we play from now until the end of the year are going to be the hardest eight minutes of our life and if we're not ready to battle in those eight minutes. We're not GONNA win. You have a great point in that's something I fought as a young player in the league. I wanted to establish a career in journalism. That's something I made a vocal point early on being a journalism Major League Ah University I told my agency that I wanted to kind of build my portfolio so that when I retired already had a body of work in place but then I fractured my foot on the last asti a training camp so I'm not playing and I have a radio show with series X. radio during a rookie Dario my season so it was conflicting for me because I was trying to work on in my self as a as a person you know trying to build my build my resume for when I retired is twenty four hours in Dallas figuring out how to balance it but then I started turning stuff down the side because I didn't like the perception option of a guy who's hurt as a rookie player with a lot of stuff going off the court so I ended up turn down podcast offers seven years ago. I was offered to do a podcast six years ago. I turned it down because had established myself in the league and I thought it would be frowned upon if I was talking about sports talking about things I enjoy daily and not being being considered one of the best five ten twenty players at my position let alone players in the NBA you fast forward three years later. The podcast deal comes to me again. I just won most improved player year. I was establishing stylish myself as a guy who could hold his own consistently starting this league now decided to do the podcast ask but I think that's it's a hard balance for young players in this league and not just the NBA but all leagues because you want to build a brand for yourself you wanNA. Take advantage of your likeness. You WanNa make much money money as possible because you never know when it's going to end but at the same time it does become time consuming. There are production days. There are things that kind of distracts you from the ultimate goal and a good friend undermine coach David Vendor pulls no longer apart organization is now with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He used to always tell me if you're not making shots. If you're not good at your job no one's going to want to listen to you on the radio media so perfect this first and then it doesn't matter how good you are. People are going to want to listen because they like you as a player that what you're saying is right. Baker is going to be a great players. League for a long time. It's GonNa make a lot of money. quarterbacks are getting paid almost eighty ninety percent almost one hundred percent guaranteed dollars so if he becomes as good as possible for the Cleveland Brown and takes us to the promised land. It's ten wins gets division a chance at a division title. He'll be on every commercial. There is under the Sun. He won't have to worry about doing the lowe's improvement commercials and no three. "To get the podcast episodes and blog posts, push to your inbox. Please joy my conversation with Michael Lombardi. Michael, thanks so much for joining me. It's great to be here. Ted. It's really awesome looking forward to this for a while. I guess let's just start with. How did you first? Get interested in football. All that's easy. I grew up in a small beach town in south jersey called ocean city, and I turned on the television in the mid sixty seventies. I was maybe ten years old. And I saw this guy who looked exactly like he belonged at my family dinners on Sunday is name was Vince Lombardi. And I thought that's kind of what I wanna do. And so there's no relationship between me and Vince other than the last name, which is a common Italian aim. And so I just really at the age of ten I plotted a course to try to get to the NFL, and then I played strategy baseball with my two buddies Michelson e-e-e-e-no, Danny Reynolds in this whole idea of strata Matic team building became so powerful for me that that's where I went from being thinking, I was going to be the next Vince Lombardi coach to where. No, no, I wanna be a GM I wanna build something. I don't wanna just coach something. And that's kind of how it started from that point everything I did from that point. And what the Valley Forge military academy. It was because I wanted to get into football. I went to Hofstra university because I wanted to get into football. And it started that way, I remember strata Matic. But what was it about strategy? We were twelve years old thirteen years old. My father was is still a barber ninety one years old cuts hair every day, and we had this house half a block from the beach and ocean city. It's the summertime we're all playing baseball together the three of us. And so we found this game. It's a card game you roll dice and you play and the three of us just bonded over it. And we built our own team. So you have the twenty eight baseball teams and Reynolds like the Red Sox. I like the Braves sin like the White Sox. He was a dick Allen fan. I was a Hank Aaron fan. So he started that way. And then we decided to take all the players and just hold drafts, and we would just do dress. And then we made rules up as we went along. So we're making rules up. And we said anybody who's in your farm system, and he has a card you have the rights. Tool so Sonoko, fines Dom McMahon and Dom McMahon's card for people that don't try to make baseball the pitcher has four five and six columns. The hitter has one two and three one dice rolls to what column you go to the other dice, you add them up to figure the number well McMahon's card only had three hits on it. So whenever he put him in the game. He was getting everybody out. So we had to make a rule for McMahon and just as life is so unique. So thirty years later, I'm on the practice field of the raiders now Davis is standing there, and he's got three people around them. And I'll never wanted anybody around them. So these people must have been somebody. He knew where like because it was rare. So I walk up to him and one of the people that are there is John McMahon. And I'm like, I hate you. Dominic man. He killed my life. I couldn't win a game. And he was from Rasmus high school, and that's how new him. So it's kind of funny. How does for you have this passion for football from early on? What was your big break in getting in? There's a saying that the world gets L away for people that know where they wanna go. I knew where I wanted to go. So when I was at Hofstra. Every January February I would get in my loyal Toyota Tercel, and I would drive to coaching clinics throughout the northeast, and I would try to meet coaches, I would try to learn football. I would pay for the hotel room. I'd sleep in my car, whatever I had to do. I would do it and one of these trips I met a guy named Harvey Hyde who was the head coach Pasadena City College, and he took me to lunch. He kept in touch with me. And then one day, I was on the campus of Hofstra..
