I'm mike pherson sitting in for mike adams today there. A lot of news happening in agriculture one of the stories that the cattle industry has been following for some time are the antitrust claims against the four largest meatpackers. In this country we have seen both ranchers and cattle feeders. Get more active politically trying to see. If there's some way that those massive packers can be perhaps persuade it to pay a little bit more for cattle out in the countryside. Well those hopes have been taken to the courts and this is an ongoing battle. And i figured it was time for an update since we did have some movement on these court cases earlier this week to help us walk us through all of the changes that are happening mike leonard a reporter with bloomberg law. Who has been following. These cases is here to join us this morning. Mike thanks for taking the time to talk to us. I'm mike thanks for having me on. You bet there is always something going on earlier this week mike. You reported that a judge in minneapolis is allowing j. b. s. tyson foods cargill and national beef to face antitrust litigation. Over there you know basically industry-wide scheme to widen the margin for meat. Can you give us a few more details on. What exactly happened in that court. Minneapolis on tuesday. Sure i can give you a few details But the ruling was under seal Basically this federal judge in minneapolis Said the case is going to move forward toward evidence taking which is called discovery He basically found that the as a preliminary matter without any any proof yet but the allegations of the case As he tells them the lawsuit do show antitrust violations so now the question is are the allegations true because the ruling was under seal We don't have the judge's reasoning and antitrust claims can be pretty technical So we're we're still eagerly awaiting fat that the key opinion will probably be unsealed in a few weeks But the case is moving forward and the same judge previously Put the brakes on the case. So i guess In the in the interim he saw he saw something all right. So this case will move forward as you mentioned. We'll have a few more details in the coming weeks mike. But this isn't the first case alleging antitrust violations to move against either meatpackers or just participants in the protein industry. This has really been happening for some time. Can you tell us a little bit more about the lay of the land of the current legal standings in the current cases..

"Has said that Agriculture always go to at the table And you know. And we're so. I'm i'm encouraged that. We haven't seen at the table and that we could try to help make a difference in that doesn't mean it's going to be e just means we have a seat at the table and we're going to be pushing farm boys in their policy forward and finally zippy Would so much talk about carbon sequestration carbon banking income opportunities for farmers What are you telling your members and what are you Watching out for to make sure. This is indeed a positive for agriculture. Well first of all. We got a really good economic staff of economists and we have one. That's done a lot of work in that ear and traveling. The country going farm bureau that were to give our farmers some inside as to what all the the these markets are offering them trying to keep the Give them the word and so they don't make any mistake. I think will vary early in the process. I think the growing climate solution act was a good move that was passed in the senate It it will help bring. Usda into a third party and bring additional bomber voices two to that market But they're so far too so much the determined I would tell farmers to be very careful right now. Because of this market is just being develop is going to see a lot of changes at one of the things that we're concerned about is as being able to protect farmers data And also we want to make sure that farmers that have been working hard on a conservation programs which are climate change or climate Smart practices We wanna make sure that they get recognized for the decades of work that they've doing out there and the those those are two important very important thing. Is you know we don't want to do this a doing it. We need to make sure that the farmers are reaping the benefits Out of the carbon market. Because they're the ones doing the work and actually making it happen. And and if we let in the aggregate is make all the money that is not something that we're interested in delivering to the bomb. It needs to be cover the cost and needs to have farmers put these practices on the ground and do the right Continue to do the right thing. as we move forward on climate policy. Zippy always good to talk with you. Thanks for joining us appreciate it. Mike always enjoy being with your hope. You'll have a great day. And god bless you thank you very much. All right back here at husker harvest days data number two where you are at the syngenta tent. Good crowd turning out today for this middle day of the show a lot of focus so a lot of attention. What's going on back in washington when it comes to taxes there was an event held yesterday here the nebraska farm bureau building with the egg leaders and legislative leaders talking about Proposed tax changes the concerns that many in agriculture have about these Proposals that are out. There we'll talk more about those tomorrow. We'll talk with the nebraska farm bureau president and we'll talk with zippy divall president of the american farm bureau federation. That's coming up on tomorrow's program something else. We're watching right now this Promise or the idea that going to renewable aviation fuel will be a boost to our biofuels industry. Well even that is in question because of some of the things that are being proposed right now worked on in washington d. c. So let's talk about that with jeff. Cooper president and ceo of the renewable fuels association. Jeff good to talk with you this. This is supposedly good news right there. Were going to this renewable aviation fuel. That could mean as you've tortoise before could be good news for ethanol but what puts that now at risk. Well thanks for having me this morning. Mike and it is potentially good news that we are seeing so much. Focus and attention on introducing liquid biofuels into the aviation sector We know that the aviation sector is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. So there is a lot of focus right now on. How do we reduce emissions from commercial airlines and other Air travel And really the most logical and the most economical way of doing that is going to be blend. Liquid biofuels with jet fuel conventional jet fuel to reduce emissions and there are some ethanol to jet fuel technologies that are rapidly emerging and. We're seeing better economics with those processes and it could be a huge opportunity for the ethanol industry. That's a thirty billion gallon market just here in the us when we talk about jet fuel But you know along with all the other things that we're watching in bed. The budget reconciliation. There is a tax credit That the house ways and means committee is developing around sustainable aviation fuels. That would pay anything from a dollar twenty five to a dollar seventy five per gallon for sustainable aviation feels that achieve a fifty percent greenhouse gas emissions reduction or better comp- compared to conventional jet fuel so We are very keen on making sure that corn ethanol qualifies as a feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel and qualified for that tax credits and unfortunately the language that's currently there would cut corners and all and in fact it would also cut out Soybean based Biodiesel or diesel From qualifying for that sustainable eda shin fuel tax credits. So we're working very hard with the committee to try and write that shift and make sure that The fuels that are actually available in the marketplace today to help with saf. We're actually qualify for this tax credits and this is huge. I mean secretary villes accidents touting this as a big boon to agriculture right Renewable aviation fuels. But you could get left out if this isn't fixed. Well that's right and we have heard lots of talk from this administration about The role for biofuels outside of light do transportation outside of the motor vehicle market. You know they talked about aviation and they talk about marine fuel applications and that all sounds great and and we absolutely agree that our producers and and the existing fleet of bio refineries can serve those markets But it's gonna take the right policy and the right signals to to get us there and we are somehow cut out of qualifying for this tax credit. i think this is gonna be another one of those tax credits. That really doesn't do anything to drive the sort of behavior that That is intended to the administration just last week. Mike had a big event at the white house. We were part of that Where they announced the goal of reaching three billion gallons of sustainable aviation fuel by twenty thirty. They're not gonna get there without Allowing ethanol and and crop based biofuels.

Ao marches on. i'm mike pearson sitting in the big seat here. Mike adams it's time to mok markets. We've got movement in the markets today spurred in no small part by friday's release of the supply and demand estimates coming out of usda. We're going to dive into those in a little greater detail. Joining us now is good friend. Naomi bloom from total farm marketing. Naomi so good to talk to you today. Hey it's all good to talk to you too. Thanks for having me on mike. You bet naomi. I wanna talk was do. We've got a dive into those numbers but before we do we've got a report of this fire it the j. b. s. plant in grand island in the past when we've seen reports of these fires at beef packing plants we've seen the cattle market absolutely fall apart. We're not seeing that today. What's the trades read on. What's going on down there in nebraska. Yeah great great story that has Affected the markets from the scam. Plant of you hit the nail on the head. The fire prices opened substantially lower. We were trading. Almost two dollars down a right at the start of trade today but right now cattle only down about thirty points. I think two things are happening. Here fire happening is now a known for the industry from the standpoint of we've been through these before so we kind of know what to expect the market kind of knows how to deal with it. It's not of course friendly by any means. But i think because the cattle market had sold off so much over the past two weeks that the news in a way For some people with maybe a buying opportunity because they were looking for value on an oversold market. The thing with cattle that people need to really remember is how strong the demand is domestically and abroad. And i know that the people in the marketplace that are like oh labor demand is done and summer demand has done but if you watched college football. Nfl football this weekend people are out and tailgating is So the demand for beef. I think is gonna stay strong and exports so's strong right now cumulative export sales for twenty twenty one or at eight hundred thirty three thousand tonnes up from six hundred ninety thousand tons a year ago. This is highest on record and china been buying us beef like crazy and Twenty twenty field right like twenty four thousand tonnes so even much stronger this year So i think that it's a demand market the fire not a great thing by any means 'cause it just means that some that cattle can be backed up in that part of the of the state but Market.

Through friday for the latest farm and agriculture news from around the world information america's farmers and ranchers needs to know on a now back to mike adams and welcome back as we talk it over with purdue aggie economists michael lang meyer with the latest numbers from the purdue. Cme group aggie economy-barometer. Michael thank you for joining us and been a while since we've been able to say this but we actually saw. The numbers improved slightly this month. Increase from from the previous month but it the index has been relatively flat on the last three months. And so we were at one hundred. Thirty eight in august That that compares to one hundred thirty four in july and a hundred and thirty seven june so relatively flat when you look at the two sub-indices however there was a there was some improvement in the in the index of current conditions. And and i. And i think that's can be explained and a couple of different ways first of all You know crop prices at held fairly steady in terms of the prospects for this this fall but as we get closer to harvest. If if it's look at it's look it looks like there's going to be fairly good harvest People get a little bit more optimistic and so we may see some in depending on on on yield projections. We may see some improvement as we move into the fall Based based on a potential crop yields so up just slightly from a month ago. How do the august numbers this year compared to the august numbers last year. Well the this year are are better quite a bit better What they were last year particularly the index our current conditions and But also the index of future expectations. is is is down is it's actually down slightly and so and so it's kind of a mixed bag. The current conditions index is rather substantially. But that's not surprising. Price started climbing Last fall Last fall and they've really stayed relatively high compared to what they were last august The terms index future expectations are higher than we were last We we are a little bit lower the mobile where last summer. and that's a little bit Little bit confusing. But i think what's happening. There is when you look at the index and future expectations for the current month They're seeing the prices are going to be a little bit lower than what they were in in fall. Twenty twenty one. And i think that's keeping that index of teacher expectations a little bit lower than what it has been Has been earlier this year and also in the fall of last year and we see a growing concern about rising input costs. Don't we that's definitely the case and we asked a couple questions related to that one of the questions related to just general inflation and and they're expecting some some pretty strong inflation in the economy The the ten year average is less than two percent when you looking inflation but Very large percentage of the people surveyed indicated. They think they think Inflation's gonna be above eight percent We also asked a question related to Index of prices paid Your prices paid. Usda prices paid index which is directly related to agricultural course and they're even more pessimistic there. there's a rather substantial group that think input prices are going to be up eight percent or more and And if you take a look at the prices paid index so far this year it's been up over five percent And so i think those are the people recognizing that there's definitely higher Input prices particularly fertilizer. That's a lot of people talk about. But there are several other input. Prices look like they're gonna be stronger. seed fuel And and some other Input prices to certainly feed have livestock producers In the in the survey and so few prices are are relatively high. And so i think that's just reflecting the fact that that Twenty twenty twenty one. Twenty twenty two. It's just going to see higher inflation than what we've seen for quite some time. Supply change supply. Chain challenges are also impacting Purchase plans like for machinery. That got to be part of it. And i think the supply chain. It's deeper than machinery. I think it's also impacting. The buildings green bans on the shimmery. But i think even to some extent You know some of the variable inputs are being impacted by supply supply chain issues and so these supply chain issues. You're running pretty deep right now That certainly Certainly part Part of the. You know the input price pressure. But i think also when you see feel prices increase that that has a direct impact on fertilizer costs and and and You know. I remember when we had really high inflation. The late seventies early eighties. Sometimes people anticipate inflation. That's that's the inflation starts getting built into prices. And so and so. I think just in general in inflation affected inflation. Expectations are relatively high Is is a problematic even if we get all the supply chain issues resolved In in the next few months probably wall. I think we're still going to see some upward pressure on input prices or talking to the purdue economists michael lang meyer latest produce. Cme group aggie economy barometer. All right what are farmers saying about. Land prices and cash rents yes. Let me start with cash rent. And then i'm moving to land values. It's been very consistent. The last three months in terms of what they're thinking about cash rent about one half Think the cash wrench can be higher and then almost the remainder of the group into cash. Rents are going to be flat. Almost nobody thinks cash. Rents are going to be down this year again. That's because of the stronger You know corn soybean prices When you look at those Cash rent prices are going to be higher A third of those people Think that they're going to be a higher by more than ten percent So that would be a pretty large changes You just for example in indiana since two thousand seven we have had three years Were cash rents were were. Were up ten percent from a year to year basis But we haven't seen that since two thousand twelve More people think that we're gonna see a cash rents in preaching in the five to ten percent range so that seems to be kind of a magic spot for those i think they're going to increase When you're talking land values. These results are also very consistent over the last three months Fifty three percents. That land is gonna be higher in the next twelve months. Of course we've seen some of that You seem that across the corn belt states in particular higher land values. You look at some of the surveys and then two thirds of the group think that land values gonna hire in the next five years. That's been very very steady for the last several months it's been longer than three months. To thirty of the people think lands is gonna be higher In in the next In the next five years and so the bottom line on cash rents cash rent higher cash ransoms contributing to the higher breaking prices. That we're seeing For crops that may be planted. Twenty twenty two when we talk. Cash rents You know i think. A lot of farmers Kind of expect those to be higher y- because a lot of times Landowner looks at Hey higher commodity prices. They don't always take into consideration the higher input costs and narran becomes that rub you wind up then with the higher input costs as well as higher cash. Rents yes it does happen. Sometimes you overshoot. That's what that's the way. I would put it. Sometimes we increased cash rents too much And exactly right. We always take into account the fact that input prices are increasing. And and when you look at the respondent and their expectations of the increase in prices paid index. Also look at facts that you you look at cornyn soothing to particular which i pay a little closer detention Than some of the other enterprise. We're looking at break. Even prices that are ten percent higher. I in twenty twenty two compared to twenty twenty one and so it is very important When you're thinking about increasing cash rent is is is yes. There probably is need for some changes in cash ranch. But we're going to be a little careful there because we are seeing rather large changes in break. Even prices for the operators also been asking about cover crops. What did you learn. Yeah we haven't asked us for a while. We answered the a a a while back and then we decided to ask questions about couple crops again and so I said we have. Have you ever planted a cover on your operation. And almost two-thirds said yes and so large percentage of the responded at least try to cover crop at some time. Forty percent of those surveyed said that they're currently using cover crops. And there's there's no real surprise you know about the reasons for using cover crops of course A soil health Is is is a very important reason for using cover crowds You know as well as other soil benefits You know Some people say that it it. It's not hurting yield and actually be helping meals and so there was a lot of reasons why people are people are using cover crops when we also ask people that are not using cover crops. Why they were not using cover crops and that that's about a third of the sample was not using cover crops and and the two big things that came out there is is those that were not using them to not think they're profitable on the also thought that they lack the resources the expertise to use those and so So that was the main reasons why they were not using cover crops. One of the questions. We ask that i thought was very interesting. You don't see very many information about this. And so i wanna make sure i mentioned this We talked about how many people that were currently using crop. Come across we have. How many years have you been plan. Cover crops and the average for that group was twelve. Used which. I'm surprised it was that high and about half hour using them five years or last but there was a group About twenty percent Using cover crops for more than fifteen years and so and so you've gotta you've got your true believers you've got the people that have tried cover crops and still experimenting with cover crops and you've got that group That that are not using cover crops and so you really have three. Different groups There in in terms of the respondents. All right michael. So as you mentioned a next month when the numbers come in i think Harvest yields will greatly impact probably of the sentiment of the farmers. Good yields will probably They'll be more optimistic and if you're in the areas where you've had a tough year yields are not there that you won't be quite as optimistic. Yeah we'll be looking at the overall index related to yells. Also we have that specific question related to foreign financial performance your performance this year better than last year and we actually saw that.

And i think that's keeping that index of teacher expectations a little bit lower than what it has been Has been earlier this year and also.

"It still dry in south america. It's not actually the last last week We saw some showers across argentina and the southern parts of brazil gonna continue with another couple of systems in the next week You know central brazil areas have the distinct wet and dry season and that typically starts at the end of september. Now the line nino pattern we've had you typically means a later start to bet what season across the higher production states of central brazil But model they're actually thinking. It might come right on time this year. So that's That would be something very unusual. Something we'll watch and But it's possible that They may lock out this year where they did last year last year Wet season started about three or four weeks late and if bottles are right then They'll come on time this year. We just had hurricane ida. It's and seems like this has become a very active storm season. Yeah the in the tropics that has been so we've already gone through. I Here across the united states. We had j k and l a after that as well so we got larry cooking up in the in the central atlantic. Good thing is that it won't be hitting any land at least here in north america. So that's good news but we do still have another couple of features. We're watching here. You know we're right at the the pico hurricane season in the atlantic right now so the next couple of weeks here. We're going to be continuing to watch some disturbances move off of off of africa. Move up through the gulf of mexico and see whether or not we can develop them systems. This year's been pretty good. We've had some really good Temperatures across the golf mexico across the western atlantic really fuel those storms so whatever we can get them up and running they they. They tend to take off our i john again. It was good to see you last week at farm progress. Thanks for joining us right. Thanks mike thanks for having you bet take care. We asked a very general question about whether they expected The prices paid index would include all the inputs used in production agriculture both for crop and livestock producers and finish shortly that averages only in priest about two percent for the last ten years bowling twenty percent of those survey. Think that in the next year it's going to be less than two percents that means eighty percent of the producers think that we're gonna see considerable input price inflation compared what we've seen in the last ten years and and it's not just cash rent fertilizer in particular but there's other input prices also that they're very concerned about and so i i think the combination of those two things it's creating a situation where the index is than certainly what it was in the spring of this year for the information important to rule america. Mike adams you can rely on us for the latest farm and ranch news from around the world information america's farmers and ranchers need to know on a now back to mike adams and welcome back. Just i just find this very frustrating that the administration has not been more supportive of the biofuels industry. I mean they've said they are but we haven't seen the push For higher levels and under the r f s We've not seen what they're gonna do handling The requests for waivers from the are f s. Are they gonna push for a fifteen year round sales. These are things that could be done now to a improve our air quality. Which is what we're trying to do with climate goals right. That's what they say they want to do. And to use what we have right now to help lower gas prices. Ethanol is a lower cost fuel we could. We could have it if you look at your pumps out there where you find ethanol blends they are lower price than non ethanol fuels. And so we have this available now but after all this time of basically discouraging domestic energy production oil production now the administration as opec to step up their production. I mean why. I mean we have it right here we could be doing more domestically and yet they continued now they turn to opec and at the same time push all. He talked about electric vehicles electric vehicles. That's down the road. Yeah there some now but we can't just flip a switch all of a sudden turn everything over to electric vehicles. We don't have the infrastructure. We don't have the capability. Why would you get us into this position now. Where here we have higher prices at the pump and asking other countries. We spend all this time. We've spent years working for energy independence due to not depend on opec for our energy and biofuels helped get us to that point where we weened ourselves off of that we were able to Use our own production and improve the environment at the same time by using biofuel so we have this right here but all this administration wants to talk about is electric vehicles electric vehicles electric vehicles. And while we're getting there we're paying higher gas prices and now looking to other countries to provide us with fuel. That does not seem to be a good sound energy policy to me. So we'll see what happens there but it is frustrating. I think To to have the administration just basically ignore an answer. That's right here in front of them to deal with higher prices to deal with climate and to deal with availability of of energy we have it here. We have the capability here so why not use it instead. We ask opec to increase their production. Doesn't sound like a good sound energy policy to me all right and i. I mentioned this earlier in the week. I do have concerns about This infrastructure package i. i'm. I'm happy if we can get money to improve infrastructure. Our roads our bridges our locks our dams our broadband. We need it. No denying that. But what cost if if to get that. We have this huge three and a half trillion dollar package on these other things. More of a social agenda they call it human infrastructure. But let's face it. There's not the support for that that there is for the roads bridges and the physical things that Got the infrastructure. Package passed and the cost of this is is huge and look stiff. Still be growing and somehow that has to be paid for. I understand when they talk about investments. I understand how often though do you hear politicians talk about well. We're going to invest this and it's gonna pay off down the road you get down the road and all you hear what didn't get done and we're gonna have to have another investment to get us better off down the road again. And that's we just keep kicking. That can down the road yes. We need investments and infrastructure. But i even have concerns if this passes. How does how quickly if at all does the money actually get to work needs to get. We've congress's past trillions of dollars of of of different spending plan since the pandemic started and while they keep talking about we need to spend more. We also hear the. We haven't spent what's been appropriated so far a lot of it is still sitting somewhere and not getting to where it was supposed to to go and this has been months since it's been passed so if they pass the infrastructure package and again i'm not against it i want. I want our roads and bridges and locks and dams and broadband to be improved. It we need to but how do we. What are the guarantees at money gets towards supposed to go and that it actually helps these areas that need it and who really decides where it goes and who's the top priority and how that money is going to be spent and how it's funneled through whatever agency it may be or or how they divvy that out. I mean to me. There are a lot of questions there that i hope we get some answers to as they continue the debate on this infrastructure package as well as this Budget resolution issue. I mean we're talking huge money here. And i mentioned this earlier in the week. Whatever happened to the days when we talked about offsets. If you're going to increase spending you cut something else or just make better use make better decisions on how the money we already send in to the federal government on how that is used and i realized that that gets controversial. Because nobody wants budget's cut and everyone thinks their area is a priority and it's more important than somebody else's i understand. Those are huge issues but still at some point. Don't most of us feel were spent were sending in and plenty of money to washington. Dc right now and wondering. What are we getting for that. I'm not against foreign development either but it seems like it's easier for us in this country to fund building a bridge or road in another country than it is to do it in our own country to do it in our own country. We have to come up with some new spending plan but yet there always seems to be money available to go do the same things for infrastructure in another country. I find that frustrating. We're sending that money in. And then every time we need something like roads bridges locks and dams. We here where we're going to have new spending for that. We're gonna have two new income for that will why. Where's the money. Were sending in now going to. I think maybe that needs to be looked at a lot more closely. So these are huge issues. Whose questions for our country moving forward we know that there are needs there but how we address those needs. I think these decisions that are going to be made here in the next few weeks going into the fall i think we'll have a long range ramifications huge impact on our country moving forward so not sure were. This is gonna all settle. I think we all need to look closely at talk. With our members of congress get their views on and share our views with them because These are huge issues. I just worry because we were. We need those infrastructure improvements so much. Those are investments because other countries are infrastructure is improving our competitors. But what would the cost be and some would say well. What's the cost if you don't that's true but what's better. Use the money that we have more pinpoint make sure it goes to where it needs to go to and not be spending it on a lot of other things. That really won't address. Those particular needs and issues. Everybody talks about well. There's consensus we need infrastructure improvement. That's right but then what happens now. We have a political system. Set up here now that to get that infrastructure money that is needed and has a by. Has bipartisan support to get that. They're setting up a system where you have to Go along with the three and a half trillion extra to get the the one trillion dollars for the infrastructure. That's a pretty hefty price tag to get your one trillion dollars for infrastructure improvements. You have to agree to another three and a half trillion on on other things and that's kind of the way it is setting up and i find that very very frustrating again. Why not focus on. The things that need to be done can be done. Has bipartisan support. And go from there. But instead it's the christmas tree approach add on a bunch of other things we and we seem both parties over the years. Do this regardless of which parties in power happens to be the democrats now but we've seen it on both sides all along Just load up things. This is your chance. Because there's there's Their support to get one thing done so to get that which is loaded up with a lot of other things and then we'll get all those things and the trouble is after you.

Mike adams you can rely on us for the latest farm and ranch news from around the world information. America's farmers and ranchers need to know on a now back to mike antics. Good morning here. From industry convention in nashville jesse allen here for mike adams. Welcome back to a. Oh a happy to have you part of our day here today and happy to be here in nashville for the cattle industry convention. We got a lot of exciting things going on here over the next couple of days going to talking to a lot of industry leaders here answer the catalytic convention and i up Joining me here today. We have the president of certified angus beef. John stick john. Great to have you here. How are you jesse's pleasure to be here. I'm doing well scrappy and person. Yeah it is great to be in person it's It's definitely something. I think we've all been missing for sure for sure. Let's talk about Certified angus beef. And i think just a general star john. Let's talk about beef demand you know. We're hearing more and more about this demand for beef coming out of the pandemic. You're trying to get out of the pandemic talk a little bit about what you're seeing or for that beef demand right now. Just you mentioned perhaps. What is the the most exciting thing coming out of the pandemic. That is strength. Beef demand. I think you know right now where. There's a lot of dynamics that the industry is reeling with But demand solves a lot of problems when consumers want your product. It makes solving some of the other issues that we have throughout the supply chain much easier. And what we're seeing as a brand is just a record. Demand for our product consumers have come to the meat case at our grocery stores and and bought the product on the menu Looking for quality. And i think it sends a very clear signal to the production sector that Beef is king right now and consumers are willing to pay the price for quality. Would definitely i think about this as well. You know during the pandemic a lot of folks got used to eating at home and cooking at home. And i think that maybe you speak to that as well. That seemed to help drive a lot of demand for for beef as well. You bring up a very good point. Obviously when when we were In quarantine and so forth consumers really did probably learn how to cook more than ever before and and Dining in at home was definitely something that was required. But also something that i think consumers actually began to enjoy But what's interesting is we continue to see retail demand extremely strong even as we see the restaurant. Industry began to pick up in terms of sales and demand as so. What makes us so bullish about what we're seeing. Currently as we believe there's some some pent-up organic demand growth that we're experiencing because we don't see food service succeeding at the expense of retail talk about how cattleman can respond to this demand and we know there's a lot of issues Right now with with cattle country and things and and worries but not only drought policy issues and as a totally different story but talk about just the demand sign. How could cattleman respond to this right now. You know in here coming out of the pandemic what we what we see is that it's important. Focus on blocking and tackling. And what i mean by that is is taste and quality was important before the pandemic and i would say that economic signal is loud and clear now as it's ever been and so as a producer i just think it's extremely important that as you. You monitor the economic drivers on your own operation that you make those genetic and management decisions that ultimately align your cattle in your product with what consumers are wanting in that is quality so that's marveling and so forth that is extremely important to taste what we're also seeing is that consumer demands are broadening. And so they want to know more about how this product was raised and was produced. And i think as we here at this convention we talk a lot about sustainability and so forth and those are things that producers need to keep in mind as well but again they're not trumping quality but they're going to be demand drivers moving forward as well talk about being here at the convention as well and you mentioned some of things that you talk about here. During the catalina strict convention sustainability being one of them were some of the things that certified angus beef. You guys are really going to be talking about with with cattle ranchers and industry folks here this week. Well what we're going to talk about really comes back to that relationship with consumers and it may not be direct like you know your neighbor. But it's an indirect relationship that in all honesty has got to be based on trust ultimately think that's what growing beef demand is based on consumers have to trust our product. And what we're going to be talking about Here at the convention with producers is first and foremost let's not be the the quality trust that consumers have in our product so let's focus on marveling let's us registered angus bulls that have the predictability to deliver that product. But then let's also talk about that whole topic of sustainability..

Shortly that average has only increased about two percent with ten years bowling twenty percent of those survey things fit in the next year. It's going to be less than two percents that means eighty percent of the producers. Think that we're gonna see considerable input price inflation compared to what we've seen in the last ten years and it's not just cash rent fertilizer in particular but there's other input prices also that they're very concerned about and so i i think the combination of those two things is creating a situation where the index is lower than certainly what it was in the spring of this year for the information. "August We probably will continue at similar questions. We've done and june july and one of the things that we we set of questions that we've been asking the last couple of months way the solar panel because they're really not that much information out there about how common it is for people to be approached related to solar solar panel projects and When we asked that question this month A third were aware of opportunities In doing their area related solar panel. I with a much smaller group six percent of all Survey respondents said that actually engaged in discussions of solar panel. And so we we're gonna we're gonna we're gonna continue to ask that question and we probably will ask a question to Related to biden's executive Executive orders but also You know related to competition So we'll probably ask a question related to that and we we may ask a question related to infrastructure Certainly the the the infrastructure bill and is going through going through congress. It had some positive aspects per for rural america tons. We may ask a question related to infrastructure back earlier in the year We saw some indications then that farmers had concerns even with higher market prices. I had concerns about some of these issues early on and we're seeing that Kind of Come the front now. Yes and and certainly several questions earlier in earlier in the year and we may we may repeat. I see a couple of questions here Later in the year but we have some questions. Related to state tax policies in particular and and producers are very concerned about some changes that may be occurring there in fact when we asked that fairly recently seventy five percent We're very concerned about developed possible developments in the state tax T t estate taxes. That would that would a impacted operation so that percentage is very high. Another thing that that As as we get more information related to this issue this is what's hot button issue a few years ago and it could be a hot button. Issue again is votes The the waters of the us and so. If if we see some see some policy discussions really into that issue will also discuss. Well also answer questions related to that. But you're right. Tax policy and regulations in general are also You know a concern to producers right now and it just adds to the uncertainty related to what the environment might look like in the next five years. Mike adams you can rely on us for the latest farm and ranch news from around the world information. America's farmers and ranchers need to know on a now back to mike antics. Well we're joined now by michael lang. Meyer do aggie. Communists wanna get the latest numbers from the produce. Cme group egg economy barometer. All right michael. Last time we talked last month The headline was the numbers The barometer had really dropped. Looks like this year closer to steady. Oh kind of give us an overview. Yes it was very. It was very similar in july compared to to june And and the both. The index of current conditions in the index of a future expectations slipped a little bit With more slippage in the index of current conditions. And and. i think there's at least a couple of things going on with the index of current conditions. And this is going to be important as we look forward into what the index might look like later in the year. But i think one of those is. We still saw some deterioration In corn prices of june july survey. And so i think that contributed to steady soybeans are up a little bit but corn was down But also we. We did ask some questions to this. In the survey Producers obviously very concerned about input prices. We asked a very general question about You whether they expected The prices paid index would include the All the inputs used in production agriculture both crops and livestock producers and historically that averages only increased about Two percent over the last ten years rolling twenty percent of those survey think that in the next year it's going to be less than two percents that means eighty percent of the producers. Think that we're gonna see a considerable input price place compared to what we've seen in the last ten years and it's not just cash rent It's other inputs to fertilizer particular. But but there's other input prices Also that they're very concerned about and so i. I think the combination of those two things. I is creating a situation where the index is lower than than certainly than certainly what. It was In this in the spring of this year and michael. I would think that it you talk with a farmer about how they feel about conditions and and what's ahead a lot would depend on if you're in an area where crops are looking good or your or you're dealing with drought and a severely reduced crop. Oh precisely i mean. The the size of the crop is going to be very important to to corn prices. But if you don't have if you don't have a very big crop to sell your sediment still not going to be very good and so and so yes there's gonna be some regional differences in responses This fall we really don't have a big enough survey really capture. Those regional differences. But we know that's going to impact that's going to impact the the the the indices. So what are they saying about How they feel about making purchases whether it's equipment or bins or buildings or whatever it may be i. I'm a little surprised that there. There's not very many producers. I think that they're going to increase purchases Whether that'd be buildings Green bins or machinery This year The percent that are going to increase as only ten percent with a heavy percents saying they're gonna remain the same compared to a year ago but only about ten percent I think he's going to increase Purchases i'm not. I'm not surprised with respect to building green ben. We all know that. There's been some issues going on there with lumber prices and steel prices and other things like that. I'm a little surprised. What was the machinery But there's certainly in some situations out there were were if if you can if you can find Machine new machinery on the lot. You don't know for sure when you're gonna get it So there is some lags there between the purchases and when you actually might get the machinery And we've seen quite a bit of inflation and used machinery prices And so maybe maybe it's the increase in prices maybe wackle availability and making people scaled back Those machinery purchases later this year. And the reason why. I think that's why i think they could be. Relatively strong is again. this is regional But certainly in the eastern corn belt. Here we're going to look. We're looking at some very strong profits for properties or some typically. When you see that you see an increase in machinery purchases and so and so. That's kind of a kind of an interesting set of questions right now and we'll see how fans out here on the next few months. You know it is very interesting. I was just thinking about that. If you just step back and had a you know a a big picture view from afar you would say. Now wait a minute were. We have grain prices higher than they've been in some time you would think that would automatically means that the The index would be much higher. So why why are the numbers lower during this time of higher prices. And it's because of all these different factors we've been talking about. Yes it's uncertainty certainly. We've talked about that before. But but i think it's i think it's related as input prices. I think this is a this is a big deal for agriculture. And i think people i think producers are sensing that when i go out and talk to producers this is on their mind and it's not like i said it's not just cash rent We we we we. We've seen some upward pressure and cash rent. We recently did a a survey here in. Indiana looking at cash ransom. Land that using chance rents. We're up about five percent in twenty one in land values. We're up about twelve to fourteen percent and and And so obviously the cost of land is going up but it's other inputs also and so you don't even though you have these relatively strong prices for example if you looked at december futures and adjusted for age is on eastern corner. You're still looking at current prices over five dollars and so even though the prices are relatively strong. There's all this uncertainty related to. Y'all gonna stay strong. They they appear like strong right now but it is. How big is the crop going to be. You've got you've got that weighing weighing in their mind but also The input price Increases are also on their minds and so the margins are very uncertain because of those those two factors it is a reminder and we have seen this before in times of higher prices that higher prices alone. Don't solve all problems right now. That's certainly the case. Let me talk specifically about cash. Rents i mean this is not just eastern. I talked about eastern corner. This is this is where the survey You know We asked the question of of producers that plant corn and soybeans and that was two thirds of the survey plan either corn or and were soybeans and half of those things that cash rents are going to be high or And of that half a third thing that cash rents gonna be greater than ten percent so again. It goes back to that that that input price inflation we haven't seen a cash rents increase ten percents. It's about two thousand ten And and so you're looking at substantially higher break evens For for twenty one but also for twenty two. What are you looking at You're gonna ask any new questions In.

What's your take away from this. Inbev current conditions and the addicts of future expectations fell but the index of current conditions. Felt much more steeply and we think one of the reasons why the index fell so hard is if if you look when we survey people in mid may and then the week of june twenty first or twenty fifth both corn and soybean futures price fell dramatically if you looking at the the soybean futures we saw drop about two dollars and fifty cents very large drop from midnight mid june through the nearby corn futures dropped about eighty cents and so even though. The prices are still relatively strong. Certainly those prices are weaker for the information. Important.
