We're remembering the life and work of the actor. Michael k williams who died earlier this month at fifty four. I interviewed him in two thousand sixteen. Let's hear the rest of our conversation. I wanna play a clip from happened. Leonard which is my guest. Michael k williams new show on sundance. It's about these two best friends who are like not exactly detectives but just kind of stuff happens around them. Michael plays a guy named leonard. His best friend is named pat. He's played by. James pure foy and they kind of get involved in this scheme of run by half ex wife who's played by christina hendricks and she comes and sort as seduces hap. And convinces them. They should go try and find this underwater car that maybe has a million dollars in it. That's by an old bridge and leonard doesn't trust her and he's just a bit iffy about the whole thing and in. This scene is agreed to do it in their loading up their car or the truck actually to head out there. So let's take a lesson to bill. We don't notice how nothing he'd be. Ideally is he's going to take them money for the being big bank and you could do a good cause we'll call. The seals does unmask. I get any money out of it is the only calls give it to me seals and got no bills to be. How is this how it intruded anyway. I don't care. I don't just given lead you keep telling yourself that. How did you tell me these. Things room has something to do with my burt on. See that the noise. Truly you've been alive annoys. Two of you are so wonderful together and you know. It's sort of the premise of the whole show in a way it's like a in a way. It's like a sitcom not in that. It's full of jokes although it does have some jokes in it in that it is just super driven by this character relationship. Yeah yeah you know that that. That was very it feels so real because it is you know as you may or may not know james period for nine have known each other since what two thousand eight we were together working on the project in cape town south africa back then. F- like seven eight months so You know we developed a friendship kept in contact over the years. We talk like that made him and his wife and we'll get together with just like anything. Goes you know what i mean and know we just like family so there was no there was not a better fit for for the role of In with me. As leonard than james i. I can't think of another person. We're just about out of time. Michael but i wanna ask you about one Slightly frivolous thing so you in a couple of your co stars from the wire are in One of my favorite music videos for one of my favorite songs ever. Which is what we do by freeway. You know deal you of you are. You've got your shocking me. Today he just keep coming with these little. Who are you do you all over the place. I got a lot of respect for you man. That's that's dope. Well mike. You're the you're the one who just like who is just like. Yeah you know when. I when i decided to get serious about show business. I was just in my apartment. Drinking beer Little weed playing. Dominoes with sean price. Friday that in their fight to drive him to his gigs back in the day. We yeah gigs. New york. I would take him to shows man Do special but Yeah even though what we do is wrong. You know not to be an intern asylum. No but on that day if you notice in that video i'm only in the last couple of shots towards the staircase into what the end and that was because That went straight from the the the burial ground berry on my mother's sister who was like a grandmother to me I buried her that day. And that's why you'll see me early. Applaud that video. So i went straight from the graveyard. I changed my clothes ran. I want this kind of switch up the scene for that day. And i went to the set matt suns at me man and we went out there. Do's went to whether i was so proud of them. They they they should everybody down jay z. Everybody freeway beanie as a get kid. 'em fuss came out of the channel like like fifty dollars a piece. When that song came out. I i was a fan of the wire in Seeing that video you know on on one six park or something like that. It was like oh man other people watch the wire this whole time. I thought it was just me. But it turns me and baby. Jay z and freeway. And beanie siegel. Yeah forget the first time on. I realized that someone else was people. Were actually watching the show. I was going the city to meet a friend of mine. And i had the radio on ninety seven and a meal Friday mix no hip hop of Was on deuce from the g unit camp. I think it was a yoyo tony yego. He was spitting. "You know finding and selecting roles that you know really illuminate that just what he's talking about in that clip the real struggles that people in this country who are often marginalized face and you kind of get to the motivation. You know it's easy to kind of take the view of just looking at stats about you. Know things that are looked at as sort of you know social ills whether to be something like homelessness or drug use or crime or you know see kind of sensationalized headlines but then you watch performance from an actor like michael k williams and you develop real empathy. Not just for the characters but for the communities that sometimes those characters represent and you realize You know people that are in pain are are in desperate situations because of circumstances outside of their control you know i. It's it's easy to pass judgment on different actions but once you kind of are dropped into these different worlds whether it's the wire whether it's the night of whether you know any number of projects he's been involved with you realize you know the real struggles that a lot of people in this country are isolated from and you know having the sort of not just insights into the problem because obviously you know david chase with the wire was a former crime reporter so there is some genuine insights into that world but also the humanity that act michael k williams could bring. I feel like that's that's the kind of thing that causes actual social change. Not just like. Hey we gotta these problems in the world. It's like no these are real people man and performances that he kind of was able to produce throughout his career really demonstrate the humanity behind some of these problems his tied some of the social issues. Yeah that's what i said. Beauty of a lot of the roles that he played And if you've ever never seen him have a conversation with himself about being typecast it is the most. It's the most phenomenal video that i've ever seen. Just i is far especially being a black person. Like i really identify what that video ally.

"I let go. I just released when he closes his eyes and says you know nothing real anyway. It you know. I wouldn't somewhere personally. It was the release. I left boardwalk feeling lighter as i should filling in myself in my mind and my skin feeling like i had left some things there you know and i felt that my ancestors were proud of me. I walked off my chest held. Because i gave it my best shot. I did the best i could and i was around the best some of the best talent. This business has to offer but you know so those what those two deaths felt my from. They will complete polar opposites for what i got from. You know now having said you mentioned who they got shot by young black teen on the streets of baltimore chucky white guy shot by five or squad. Ironically of all black men in harlem and it speaks to. What's happening today. You know in in our society in so those images that you see on the wire and chalky had an import work empire in particularly with my character's demise. I don't take that lightly. You know anybody. That was on the set. That day when idris elba and i had to shoot the scene where stringer bell dies our shaking like a leaf and crying. You know because. I did not want to do that. Just didn't feel right like. How do you come to these two. Dark skin strong-minded blackman. Strong-willed black men. As we say in the hood these two kings house it always gotta komo and as the face off one of gotta die. I don't wanna be a part of that. I didn't know that point i questioned. What am i doing. Am i telling the truth or my perpetuating the problem i suffer with that on the wire you know and and weighed on me. And even though it's fake. Where i go in my in my psyche. It trust me. He is very real and it comes equipped with all those emotions that comes from having killed so one that looks like you you know how do you how do you deal with that. Would you go with that that. That's why i take it. It's been great to talk with you. Thank you so much and thank you for all the great work. you've done. Thank you terry. Thanks for your time. "They've been saying this and we're still almost twenty percent away of being a couple of weeks ago that seventy percent of the population was vaccinated. But it was only like the only guy like one shot or something like that. Not that was a certain stance. I think that was almost new jersey or something like that was just biden. Said that that was on the only a certain state. I could've been real. Well the thing is that a lot of a lot of our population is even eligible to get vaccinated. Because if you're under twelve you can't so i don't see how that's going to be possible until that's available for everyone right. Virginia is also set to remove richmond lease statue. And that is supposed to be happening tomorrow more than one hundred and thirty years after it was built as a tribute to a civil war hero. He is widely seen as a symbol of racial injustice and according to state officials. That is gonna come down this week. There governor said this is an important step and showing who we are and what we value as a commonwealth so that is on top of a granite pedestal. Nearly two Which is in the mind on monument avenue so if announced plans to take the statue down since last year in june and they announced that ten days after george floyd died under the knee of a minneapolis. Police officer the plans for more than a year by two lawsuits that were filed by residents. Who are opposed to the removal but rulings last week by the supreme court of virginia cleared the way for that statute to be taken down. So tomorrow is the day definitely right. Got to go right. And that is what we were talking about. The cdc showed that seventy us adults have had at least one shot of a kobe. Nineteen vaccine right so for fully vaccinated. It's only fifty three percent. But they said i think is sixty two percent of the population who is eligible to get have gotten it but fifty. Three percent of the population in general are fully vaccinated. Right at. is your front page news. All right now where we come back rest. In peace to michael k williams. He passed away yesterday. He was he was found so he came a couple of years ago. I had to go somewhere and make myself believe what what could make me believe that. Wanna kill somebody. And i had to find that within myself own. Was that when acting in a. I gotta go somewhere and it's dark. I locked him with omar because he was sensitive he was vulnerable. I didn't play as alpha male. I'll play. I'm like you know like in a with made him. Connect anybody connected. If you push anybody in the corner they are going to retaliate. They're going to attack. It's just it's the nature of life and omar kind of played them from that the sensitive dude. Like you can't hurt his feelings so you can see over man but not killing somewhat. I could see myself in. love bro. See myself in love you know. I don't really. I didn't really get onto the whole. You know the male female thing it will. I looked at it was love. You know. I mean and i didn't have to walk in high heel shoes. These not for that one shall catholic. Triple nine have no problem playing any role man. You know. i've played a few gay characters. I call my agent is going to start coming up in a minute. you know. Happy land at omar this joint coming on. Abc called When we ride which is based on a true story hiv positive man. You know had to lose weight. Loss like forty pounds of that role Shutout till two. Ken jones san francisco. The people castro. How do you get that energy out of you and i mean what all the roles. You play oman. The uae play chalky on bogin pie. Gangsters you play a lot of gay roles. How do you get all that energy. Mashallah ma'am so glad you said because it you know. I had to learn how to wash my my psyche. This kid is my little brother. Man atlanta twenty one years old. We was chilling atlanta's on a set of bessie. The kid was. he's it may look stressed out. Do you meditate they They may need to watch the brain bro. I know you you take these characters. And i was like this kid told me that that was like hey you got got a wash your brain. You know so so prayer. I had to get back into bible man. Just get my knees just like wash. I we connect with my family. People who matter me be fifty november so i reconnect with reconnected. Marquette and my oldest son he you know he got some issues. As i had. No family came. Power Returns for Many Texans, but Low Pressure Water Crisis Escalates

"Focus on the ongoing effects from that deadly winter storm that hit several states a few days ago. Earlier today, President Biden approved a major disaster declaration for Texas, which was hit especially hard. The move frees up federal funding to help rebuild and recover from the storm. Throughout the state. Freezing temperatures and extreme weather had a devastating effect on infrastructure, especially the water supply affecting millions of people. Here's Florian Martin of Houston public media with the latest on that volunteers handed out thousands of bottles of water at a distribution side in San Antonio. It's has been challenging because we have five people. Michael Williams came here from the small town of Bernie just outside San Antonio. He says he and his family have been without running water. Since Monday. Our community has in Bernie has really banded together so Challenging, but we can get through it. After days without electricity. The vast majority of Texans have had their power of historic, according to the state's grid manager. Temperatures air back to above freezing in most of the state, But clean water could remain an issue through the rest of the weekend and beyond. The problem is low water pressure. We've seen a task aid of effects. Harris County Judge Lena Hidalgo is the chief executive for the county that includes Houston. The power outages affected the generator. Is that keep the pressure going, and the pipes that have birth have also been a problem for the leading to the loss of water pressure When the pressure sinks below a certain level, Texas cities are required to issue boiled water notices because the water could become contaminated. Notices are in effect in large cities like Houston, Austin and San Antonio. This week, many people ran their faucets and a constant trickle something plumber's advice to keep pipes from freezing. Well, it's a catch. 22 John Ingram is a plumber in Houston. Yes, it does take away water, and we are in a crisis as far as water pressure and keeping Pressure up across the tent city. However, at the same time, that's really the only option you have and maintaining water in your home. Thanks to all those burst pipes. Demand for plumbers now far exceeds supply. One Houston church has reached out to partners across the country to get volunteer plumbers to Texas. Chris See is the pastor at a classy, a Houston He says they usually try to organize emergency help like this for home repairs after tropical storms and hurricanes this time, we need a little bit more skilled labor mucking houses a lot easier than plumbing repairs on burst pipes, but Just following in that vein. We know that's what we need. C says the response has been slow as other states have also had issues with the weather and people are has attend to travel during the pandemic. He's confident they'll get a team of volunteers together for the community's most in need. The church is paying for travel, food and accommodation. For most Texans. The nightmare will probably be over next week. But many others will have to deal with the storm's aftermath. For awhile longer. We went outside in our neighbors have kind of been checking on each other, and it was the same for everyone. Rachel thinking lives in Austin, where large areas they're still without water. We're just trying to do that their minimum right now, basically January in Flushing toilets, we can't really do much beyond them. "Hello Hi everyone welcome to recovery. Happy Hour where we talk about life beyond the bottle and what happens after we stop drinking I'm your host. TRICIA and it's been over thirteen hundred days since my last drink, which has saved me almost twenty grand. Thank you for joining me. Today's episode is a bonus episode yet to celebrate the second birthday of the podcast I decided to release a second episode today so Happy Birthday. What's special about today's to birthday interviews as that they're total opposites. We just had an episode with someone who wouldn't have looked like. They had a drinking problem on paper. And now we've got someone who is drinking and using so heavily in their formative years that they got sober while incarcerated at age sixteen, and now have almost nineteen years of sobriety at age thirty five. Five a common theme with episodes that include long term sobriety is that quitting drinking doesn't just automatically fix her life. There's usually something underneath the drinking that needs to be addressed and I've heard now in a few of my interviews, specifically with men about the efficacy of Inner Child Healing Ryan talks a little bit about that today, and it's something I wholeheartedly believe in myself. Inner child healing in its simplest terms is healing the things that have happened to you and your formative years that have left semi-permanent marks on your psyche. These are experiences that create habits in your brain learned reactions that can repeat themselves in adulthood, if not fully healed. Perhaps you had an emotionally unavailable caregiver or apparent growing up, and you find yourself as an adult sabotaging your relationships by choosing emotionally unavailable partners, or maybe you spoke in front of your school classroom as a child accidentally peed your pants and had someone laugh at you, and now you have full blown panic attacks at the thought of public speaking these are experiences that are stored in the more emotional, less logical right, hemisphere of your brain, and often while you're left. Hemisphere of the brain is setting goals for yourself and being ambitious. The right side has a hard time staying in integrity with those plans. If they're old stored traumas that have never been allowed to heal. These habits can feel impulsive uncontrollable pop up at incredibly inconvenient times they might be triggered by certain people or even the person who is responsible for creating the experience. Most of us have at least one experience like this, even if it doesn't feel like textbook traumatic, but they're stored so deep in our subconscious that sometimes the bad habits that they create are hard to even identify because they feel like they're part of us. Sometimes these bad habits put us in bad positions where we sabotage something consistently your create uncomfortable emotions that make us want drink to cover up the feelings. So when you do the inner child healing, you start to dissolve, the subconscious triggers that make you reach for alcohol? It's like pulling a weed out by its route. Inner Child Healing can be done on your own or with a therapist. A ton by listening to the PODCAST Dharma. PUNKS NYC with Josh Korda huge fan of his. He's been on the show, and it was a really big game changer for me. He focuses a lot on inner child healing, an attachment theory I've also done exercises with my therapist guided meditations on insight timer, specific for inner child healing, or even used an APP for chronic pain, called curable that had writing exercises specific to inner child work. I'm going to list a handful of links and the show notes that you can click on to learn more, and if you're not already using the insight timer APP on your phone for meditation, please download it because one I have used it regularly for almost four years, and it's incredible and to I'm going to include a link to a meditation on the insight timer APP by Justin Michael, Williams I've specifically done this one meditation for the past few weeks, and it's been so powerful for me. My therapist is recommending it to Oliver other clients. The work in recovery never ends. We don't arrive at a finish line once we quit drinking. We just start to uncover the things that are deeply rooted that need a little bit of work. Inner child healing can be one of those things to add to your list to look at when you're ready before we get started. I want to tell you about a company that I love called better help if you're needing some extra help with your recovery or struggling with something that's preventing you from living a happier life that are helped will assess your needs and match you with your own licensed professional therapist. Memphis Police Union Head On Calls For Reform

"Simon Congress many cities states and countries say that they want to reform police practices but any reforms we need to go through police unions Michael Williams heads the Memphis police union and joins us now thanks very much for being with us Mr Williams good morning how are you fine thank you Sir I want to ask you about the commercial appeal newspaper there points out that the the twenty nineteen city budget called for two hundred sixty million dollars in police services but just a little over four million to housing and they suggested that maybe giving more people shelter it might be a wiser way to spend tax dollars and even bring down the crime rate how do you spell that it is it is hardly wholeheartedly I don't necessarily agree with the funding police but you know this is something I've been working on not just as a union president but as a citizen and as a native Mississippian we have started to spend too much money and economic development we've diverted too much money of course tax dollars into pilot when you live in the second most violent city in the nation which is massive aside from what happened to Mr Floyd which was working near active and there is money it's just a matter of prioritization we are not a bank we are a D. that the citizens pay their hard earned tax dollars which I am one of and we deserve to have a better amenities better core services and not necessarily spend all our money to make the rich richer well let me ask you something that might be a little tougher than than just money if I might put it as that well Kerr twenty eighteen there were reports that maybe the Tennessee bureau of investigation should be the responsible party for investigating officer related shootings officer involved shootings in Shelby County which is in Memphis would you advise your members not to submit to interviews in and give statements to the union right what a good deal everybody thinks that because you're a police officer you want to separate me from being a Christian everybody's entitled to their Fifth Amendment rights just because I'm a police officer don't necessarily mean that I give up my constitutional right and we encourage officers to give statement but if you're going to compare all day on the guild's statement and they should be covered by what we call god I can't even think of the name now well was that after I did give me a chance to follow up anyway recognizing that their citizens in every US citizen is entitled to right right not even close off incriminate yes exactly but what about the idea that of course police officers are also public servants who by the way are entrusted with sometimes lethal force and and that they ought to submit themselves for interviews the responsible parties as soon as possible in the public interest sure well that's not a problem but also you know just as any one of this country I love this country and what this country is built on no one everybody's innocent until proven guilty number two everybody is entitled to representation you know you try to paint not necessarily you but they're individuals I try to paint unions this organization we don't set policy so when they talk about reform and all that well we don't the city of Memphis state Tennessee legislator legislation base that policy we don't we just abide by the policies that they sent for now only just like any other organization that has the ability to say that we like this or don't like that but that still doesn't determine what policies are going to be set so you know I think that there's a bigger agenda at play when it comes to unions across this country everybody's represented yeah let me ask and we just got half an hour left we went about the forty eight hour waiting period before an officer accused of misconduct can be interviewed about it would you be willing to give that up in collective bargaining no because just like with anything everybody's traumatized when they go through a dramatic situation I'm a combat veteran and I definitely understand post about express disorder also understand so therefore when you start coming at an individual right after something happens you know it's just like a citizen our system has the ability to either talk or not talk and that's something that everyone continues to try to take away from of police officers that I don't think that that's right Michael Williams of the Memphis police unit thanks so much for being with us you're welcome

It's breaking down the games. It's awesome. It's big show. All right, Gregg. It is finally here real football, regular season. Football will have you every week here on Thursdays breaking down, not only the Thursday night football game, but the biggest games of the weekend because you're already doing that in prepping for that for the unbelievable show. You have the NFL matchup show on ESPN and of course the great work you do for NFL films as well. Let's start with the Thursday night or Greg eagles falcons. What are you most intrigued about in this matchup. Oh, that I'm actually intrigued with how the falcons choose to play offense with their personnel. For this reason, Nigel Brad will not play in this game, and it would seem to me that the falcons would wanna stay with base personnel quite a bit which they do. They do often play with two tight. They do play with a fullback, but I think they would want the eagles linebackers assuming the eagles play with three linebackers. They may decide to go big nickel and play Graham, the safety almost as a linebacker or Jenkins can do that as well. But I think you wanna put the eagles in that situation Ross and then line up with a lot of base personnel. Obviously, they won't do that on third nine, but I think you wanna see how the eagles are going to handle that with nine zero, Brad out of the game because the only real starting linebacker they will have out there is Jordan Hicks, their middle linebacker, and he's coming off. I believe in Killys injury. Yeah, I was gonna ask you out of the guys other than once al-shabaab Jeffrey and TIMMY Jernigan as well as Nigel, Brad, which guy hurts him the most. And it sounds like you you think it might be Brad them? I think it could be yes. The other intriguing element to this game is just what you mentioned with the eagles missing Jeffrey and MAC Hollins who will be out as well. I think that you'll see a lot of two tight end sets, and I think the rookie Dallas guttered we'll get significant snaps in this game. So that's the on that side of the ball. That's the the other element that intrigues me in this game. Totally agree. You know, Greg eagles fans are very nervous about Nick foles and the fact that he's not played well in the preseason. Do you have a read on that? I mean, he has had a history in his career of being up and down guy, a major history. There's a very wide variance in his play. I think he needs to be schemed. I think the eagles did such a good job with that and in the playoffs last year. And I think you'll see a lot of that. They'll be a major chess match. Going on here, don't forget. Teams of now had an off season all teams, but certainly the falcons have had an off season to figure out how better to defend run, pass option concepts. And I know the eagles are trying to expand those concepts as well. So I think that that's a critical dimension to this game.
