"Time for the Friday holder just stopped that we've accumulated that we can't get in during the week, and it's all brought to you by the wonderful people. And after a Be teeth at dot com's Their website after electronic in Glenview is the best, Danny Gentlemen. Michael Jordan will be a presenter for Kobe Bryant in his Holland fame induction. I think that's very cool. However, here's what I need from the MBA or basketball. Stop putting the Hall of Fame ceremony on a random Friday night in September. Stop doing that. It should be a prime time event on a weekend in a bigger place in Springfield, Massachusetts, I would say also Then, if you pre covert, you can get 10,000 people there to see the Hall of Fame ceremony. No doubt it's always small. It's always buried in the September Michael Jordan, of all people that get into the Hall of Fame should have been able to be on main events Sunday night where everyone could see it in prime time. They always kind of put it over on a Friday This is also big event. Do right by Kobe. Do it right. Michael was ticked off. I had run into him. It was just before he was going in the horse and he could I get a sit down with you. He's like Nope. I'm not doing any media around this. Nothing personal, although than the press conference I have to do at the Hall of Fame. Said. Why, he said, because they double the price all of a sudden, just for this year, and Michael had to buy a bazillion tickets to get everyone there, he said. I just feel like Why didn't you do charge that last year? Why are you treating it different Because it's my year. He was not happy with the leak. So it's cool that he's coming back. I agree. So, Danny Gentlemen the NFL is going to partner with, but bookmakers Caesars Entertainment, Draftkings and Fanduel. Oh, no, not gambling around the NFL. No, no, no. Can't have that cap. We came and bring it up in the broadcast. Can't we know that? You know, they've always been people have said to them if you didn't have fantasy football and pools and now legalize sports game, your ratings would never be what they are. Oh, no people are watching just to watch the games. No, and now they're gonna partner with how many Danny Fanduel, Draftkings and Caesars Entertainment. Three different bites at the apple and they get in 10 grand there getting millions Funny how that happens when there's when there's money on the line cap. When there's money to be made years, the NFL taboo couldn't talk about it. Brent Mussburger and Al Michaels had to talk around it. Now they could talk right out. I'm sure they'll be lines on the bottom of the screen as we watch the NFL Games. Sure it will be no question about it. We have to do that on TV. Now we do our, you know. Hey, Here's the points back, blah, blah, blah, and it's a partnership, but I get it. Al Michaels is.

I've ever heard and i think all of us heard at kobe's kobe celebration of life. He also gave an a one of the more notable speeches on his own inducted into the basketball hall or seen anything like it. He just basically killed out everyone who he's still bitter about. Have you seen alan. Iverson's it's great. It's no he didn't call producer so green. he was so pure and just unrehearsed.

"I don't know the last time y'all went to space jam dot com but it's been around since nineteen ninety-six. Yes it is. It is an old school. Url twenty-five years later the sequel film called space jam. A new legacy and starring. Lebron james has replaced the url space jam dot com to showcase. The new movie's first trailer. But if you say wall hawes really liked that old website. It's been around since nineteen ninety-six. The original website has a new year l. at space jam dot com slash. One thousand nine hundred ninety six. Yeah several years ago lou. Act that space. Jam had not been updated since nineteen ninety-six Became an internet meme and it kind of percolates backup every so often with people talking about how amazing it is that that's still there. It's still online. The service is still there. It's up there with a few other long-lasting websites and so. Yeah the idea that. There's now a new space jam movie. And they they need space. Jam dot com to make way for lebron and the modern space jam almost lost us a piece of internet history right there with l g phones and yahoo has thing space jam in nineteen ninety-six six people. It does warm my heart that i can still go online and get an extremely low resolution. F f audio file of michael jordan. Sang a line from that movie like it. Just as someone who customized all of the notification sounds on my windows ninety five machines with clips that i would pull from stuff like that like it. "On three. Now in a week is just taking it like, you know, like 35 bombs is a pinch here this year for the Braves. Good for Pablo. Man. Let him go Make another postseason run. Good morning to you Happy Friday to you, Adam, Coupled with you in the leadoff spot is where every weekday 5 to 6 a.m.. How about those warriors? Huh? Four straight first time this season. They've won four in a row. They're back at 500. You heard Bob Fitzgerald. They're on the show opened. Give me give me the whole thing, Dave. It's a great time out, man. And it's gonna be a great time now because we're about a week away from it's a great time, man Shades like standing in my kitchen, getting ready for school with my dad in like 2000 and two listening to that thing, then get ready for Antoine Jamison. And you're Golden State Warriors take on Kobe and Shaq in the L. A Lakers at the Arena in Oakland, anyway, our fans returning next week. The Oracle Arena Oracle Arena to Chase Center. We go mixing it up there. It's been so long since we've had a chance to get out. Um This could be a important nine game run with fans in the building at the end of the season here, right, You can get that nine game I saw. There's like a nine game package for the playoff run here, but this is important Warriors with a victory yesterday. First time they're back in 500. Almost a month, I think was March. 22nd 23rd was the last time they were in 500 or better so first time. They've won four in a row, and it's a good time for it. They'll be put to the test against the Boston Celtics, who blew out the Lakers yesterday. Jalen Brown just absolutely shredded Los Angeles. So where's will have a chance to To sort of see where they stand. And Steph Curry said as much after the game like he's happy about the four game win streak, and they're excited about how well they've been playing the contributions they've been getting from around the roster, considering the plane, a lot of small ball, and I really do think the small ball style of play. I was talking with Murphy back about it yesterday. Did we forget to the death line up was all was all small, Paul style of play, Right dream out in there at the five. And while 12 Scotto Anderson is not quite shod, living Stiner Andre Iguodala that type of performance last night from the bench, really from him from Damian Lee, and from Jordan Pool, these three guys together really kind of bullied this team because Steph started oh, of seven from three point land. I think it was over seven at the half ends up four of 13. So hurry Drops in the three. Thank you Take four of six in the second half from three, which is pretty good 12 of 25 sweet shot, like 50% from the field and 33 points for staff. He's still on track now. Well, I guess that's his ninth consecutive game of 30 or more points, and they were talking on the broadcast last night. About guys to average 30 or more in their 11th season or later, the only guys to do it and their 11th NBA season or later. Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, James Harden, and if Steph Curry does it, he will be the only player in NBA history to average 30, a game arm or in his 12th NBA season..

Does Lebron James Deserve More MVP Awards?

"Let me tell you what. Lebron james is notorious for a other than skipping town. Go to another team other than that you know what. He's famous for taking his foot off the gas to a regular seasons when he went back to cleveland. You remember that he was like i don't mean to have the number one seed. I don't need to kill myself during the regular season. that's why he didn't win. Mvp's he undersea deserve to have more last year. Janas was the mvp unwanted convincingly and overwhelmingly. Why bernie 'cause the year before. John is wanted and lashio. Jonah's had better numbers than the year before. And the milwaukee bucks had the best record in the nba. Lebron james was really shocked because he had some false narrative going on that he was the mvp. Come on bernie has some humility. You don't have to do that. Politics will knock it you an. Mvp saying goes true. Greatness needs no self promotion. And we've talked about this probably at least once in every show we've done robin that is lebron is incredibly insecure about his legacy. If he's really the king what is he. Allow these things to get under his skin. He did it last. September when he lost out on the mvp then he says well. What really pisses me off. Allie got sixteen votes out of. That's what really pisses me up. Look if you want to continue to die in this hill lebron. You're going to continue to be seen as petty and al kuzina says the mvp's very political award. Yeah so is the mvp and major league baseball in the nfl. Probably the nhl and the heisman trophy right on down the line. Linda brown goes on to say. I don't sit around thinking about it or crying about it. That's what he just said that's all. He does time even when they won the championship last year and i gave him top credit. Lebron fan never will be better given top credit. Because the lakers are a franchise of eras you had to wilt air the jabbar air the magic the kobe and shaq era negative lebron air to win a championship and when he did the first thing he does say i want my damn respect do what he. What are you constantly begging for. What exactly is it. What happened in because you know why bernie it tells you all you need to know. He knows deep down. He's not the best player all time he knows his michael jordan. That's why it's always looking for these other things to add to his resume. That's why he he wants an mvp and you know what he sees now. He seems j. He sees james harden in brooklyn without a kevin durant and they've won fourteen out of fifteen or whatever the number is bernie and and he's looking going and when a went out to lakers stumbled he's not going to win the

Strong, Black, and Hot Enough To Give You Second Degree Burns

"Lack women oprah beyond saying and all your favorite reaction means. I've heard people say they like their women like they like their coffee. Strong black hot enough to give you second degree burns. Careful what you wish for darius but the thing is not all black women are strong and even the ones that are strong aren't just that we doors open for us to especially with someone with biceps like michael jordan. Ads like michael jordan. Hare like michael b jordan but unfortunately a strong black woman stereotype is rained in american culture. It has a long history. About as old as morgan freeman and batty white combined now you may be wondering what is a strong black woman is the idea that black women are emotionally resilient naturally selfless to browns ask for help and can succeed with no resources so basically every care to play by viola davis. The irony is the strong black woman. Stereotype was started by black women to combat all the negative ones the in the aftermath of slavery there were really only to stereotypes of black women. You were either from sex temperatures jacksonville or a man who was just there to smother people in booze in response black suffragette mary. Church terrell point strong black woman motto listing as we climb and i get what she was going for butt lift as we climb even bodybuilders. Don't do both at the same time. You expect a black woman to do more than swertz nigger in his prime but overtime society shrank of black woman down to just her strikes and the popular conception now is that black women can bear and overcome any birth. We see all over our culture in movies like the color purple who my life. And how can we forget ghost. We're whoopi goldberg literally has to let a white man. U's her body to rub foreheads with his fiancee. Even when black women only have one line strong as hell move you will be moved. Damn at least let her say hello. Let's all say what's wrong with being perceived as strong. Isn't it a good thing. No not if black women destroy their mental and physical health trying to live up to it and not people think black women are so strong they make them do all the work on their own. Look stacey abrams. She helped democrats win georgia and before you knew it. Using active vaccine distribution the new york. Subway and kim and guy is marriage. The stereotype even reaches the doctor's office. Black women are less likely to be properly diagnosed. They have a much higher maternal mortality rate. And they're less likely to be believed about their symptoms and pay so a black woman basically has to be a doctor to know everything that's going on with her body and then convinced another doctor that that's what's happening. I was in. a car. Accident lacerations and internal bleeding a morphine drip and prep surgery stack. We'll get you a couple of bandaids. you'll be fine. What's so the next time you see a black woman struggling at work or trying to lift the box help her. Don't just stand there like you're about to see wonder woman in action in fact if you're in the new york area moving this week and i could use some help moving my couch because i'll be damned if i'm going to back lifting my own couch.

Kim Jones on the Making of Air Dior

"It's been a crazy. Eight months herself is being crazy as being busy. Yeah and i've appreciated time at home and being able to have time to myself. Reflect more of john when you were say a lot of time to research the excited about a very eventful few months but today we're here to talk about sneakers. what makes an amazing sneaker. And what makes an amazing sneaker launch air. Dior or shoe which we have right here. It's like the most sought after sneaker in the world right now. yeah. I've been scouring the internet to kind of see what people are saying and how much they cost and you know it's crazy how quickly they've accelerated price. I wanted to start with your own relationship with sneakers because it goes back a long time. This is not a trend. You just jumped on. I mean most people who know me know that i started out working at a company called gimme five whereas college but before that when a student also at school nyc for me was the absolute must have an odd save off and dish. Dishwasher governed by pair of sneakers and people have michael jordan with the heroes and just everyone was wearing sneakers. Me and my friends would chip into bypass to share them and share parents of have jordan. Fives that were on. Discount in place in brighton that we bought a we went and three as on them now. Forty five pounds and we chipped by them and then we take them in terms of obviously make sure no one stood on them and sick have never allowed to go out anywhere teaching them and it was just you. Nuts is the design. It was just like it was a cult thing. It became colton. You know we both got these which the first one of the first has jordan's in the white and gray which is the basis for the ed your and the ideal thing was really dickel t and i've had a contract with nike for quite few years. And then they taught me about being jordan. And as i really love to do with your because they've never done and luxury house with georgian collaborations. I would take italian at you know jordan with the dior factories and really make something special and exciting. And it's really you know it was solid. Where do you want jordan's that was really how it started as bit selfish so before we get into the actual kind of design of the shoe. Because i think there's a lot of thought that goes into that. Of course the jordan one for the uninitiated amongst us. I think sneaker has called it the aj one. Why is that such an important shoe. Silhouette i think is just such design. Classic infamy you does periods in history. Whether it's been shoes. Come out like this on the air. Max ninety five that just speak to people and they speak to a generation of people for me. I didn't have the original pair of these because they a bit too young for them and they really out of my price range and they weren't so easy to get the uk. And then as i started going to japan as i graduated i started collecting fares what i think the first bought seven bucks in a flea market and then to visit a friend where does student and that was kind of to shake shaking. You just they just become infectious shots at me. Now you just love to design it so joining a club. I guess so. When you're thinking about designing a shoe that has to balance effectively three different brands right. Young jordan has its own brand completely new operated separately with its own team. Then there's night key which obviously is like gave birth to the jordan. There's there's three iconic brands so when you're when you're when you're designing a shoe and you have to balance the dna. Three brees was really like we need to netflix. Because that's one of the criterias of deal is significant advance. We knew the letter had to be sourced. We knew we wanted to have the finishings. Made like bag would be made. So you have the edge painting. You have the way that things are hand finished in the sewing. The oblique here is made specific size just the jordan and it scaled per size of georgian. And you have again. You have on the tongue which is a new technique that we developed an inside the leather so units inside which they did have the normal jordan and inside. I have the numbers or these are the ones from the miami share. Whichever forty has them and really making them for people that would appreciate something and understand the croft now in consumption when you talked about fashion. I'm very aware of numbers and craft being important people. I think young people are learning by nets and they won't buy things last longer for me. Doing things like this was something being a limited number of things but it's creates excitement. There were only thirteen. Thousand pairs of shoes made but there's also a whole bunch of other skews in the collection which may be the as much. Yeah i mean. We've mentioned what we michael jordan's wore jay. But he was because he was the coolest guy and it was like he will seats all the time and we were looking at we made of his clothes and then we had to call them present it all to him which was kind of because he sees everything can approves everything jordan. What was that like. I mean he was super lovely. And i get in chicago. We went to do the don't it was like. I was really impressed that he was to be honest. That's the cage stream isn't it. I guess it was. He was just radiant. He's and you want to keep them the stuff so we can keep it and travis was there and he was reading into it so you know promise travis he'd be one of the people have it and it was just it was. It was an appreciation for each other. That was the thing that was nice about. What did you have to see to the powers that via d. or to get them. I mean they've never done nothing like that. I had to piatra use my ceo and we have extremely good relationship. And i was like. I really want to do this. What you think it nina. "The with kevin mason mentioned last week. I was a little disappointed to hear that super bowl ads. This year won't include coca cola pepsi. Budweiser still a lot of advertisers. It took them a while to sell the advertising but they got it done but from everything. I've read this year. More companies are going to be using celebrities than ever before make sense. Celebrities are pretty easy. You got to pay a little bit more. I guess to get the bang for the buck. But everybody's gonna talk about the ads with celebrities in them now. I haven't seen any ads so far. That just heard about some of the ads. I know we'll farrell is going to be one. I've seen a teaser from gm. Mike myers and dana. Carvey look back to wayne's world and guess parody commercial ashton kutcher and his wife mila kunis are in a commercial for cheetos. I think we've shaggy the singer. Michael jordan matthew mcconaughey. They're gonna be in commercials to as are of course sports stars terry bradshaw peyton manning ally manning marshawn lynch all going to be in commercials together. So obviously we're gonna see a lot of celebrities this year. A lot of big stars in the long run because of this pandemic. You wanna make sure you're talked about and that isn't always so easy.

Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol: Black Mamba and White Swan

"How is kobe's family ramona. Do you know anything about how they're marking this anniversary. Yeah they really. Don't want this to be kobe. There's actually this is the best. There's actually two kobe days already. What's the other kobe. Kobe in los angeles is eight. Twenty four august twenty fourth. I was there at city hall a couple of years ago when they declared august. Twenty fourth coby bryan day. It'd be happy to see you and his birthday is august. Twenty third so true. Kobe fashion he gets two days. Okay vanessa bryant the other day. She put out a instagram post. Essentially saying please have some respect for our family. We don't wanna see images at the crash all day long and it was an awful day. We should remember him. We should talk about it. But that's just the day he died. I think she really wants to remember how he lived. And the legacy. He left us. So you sat down ramona for a long indepth interview in december with pow gosol clopping. Who is kobe teammate. On the lakers his friend. And that was your chosen way of getting into the story as a reporter. Why did you wanna talk to pow in specific. And why did you want to reflect on this past year without kobe with him. I don't think i realize how close they were. I think the appreciation and the closeness developed over time By just going through everything that we went through but also taking time and wanting to spend time off the court connecting deeper level. I covered them up close to it talked to coby all the time. All the time was right there. I don't have time for friends. I'm not a good friend. Used to say that gets seem so focused on basketball. And then he was so focused on his off the court stuff and and i think with kkob. It's it's sort of revealed itself really sense. His passing of just how close they were. And i had the same feeling a little bit. When when michael jordan spoke at his at his memorial and you know he he was crying and he opened up about how close a relationship was maybe surprise people that kobe in our very close friends but we were very close friends like a little brother. He wanted to be the best basketball player that he could be. And as i got to know him. I want it to be the best big that i could be. So where did you start things with pow. Gusau ramona what did you what. What did you ask him. I i think he just said. Tell me about your relationship. I when i when. I got to the team and we've got to play together. We got nose runs In winning championships. It was all really about business. But then india relationship really took off and really translated into something much more than that some Much deeper than

Thirteen Awards Movies to Watch Out for, Oscar Do-Overs, and More From the Mailbag

"Before we get into the mail couple things over the weekend hit in the world of movies. First thing i want to talk to you about is the thing. I spoke to the directors of this documentary series about which is tiger tiger woods. Now you know as a friend of mine and podcast partner that. I am an avid golfer. And a fan of the sport gulf you are not a fan of the sport golf though your partner is and so golf is in your life but not truly of your life. What do you know about tiger woods. And what were you expecting heading into this documentary. Well in addition to being one of the greatest golfers in history isn't in history and certainly one of the best athletes of the twenty first century. That the correct century yes which i do know about because athletes at that level become pop cultural figures and i am interested in pop culture. Even if i'm not interested in my husband lecturing me about what type of iron tiger woods is using which is like a personal hell that i live in on a daily basis so i know a lot about him as a pop culture athlete and then obviously he has a pop cultural significance all of his own because of the events that he went through in the public eye at the end of the last decade and really honest life for the last decade. Yeah and so. I think that this series is an interesting gambit on. Hbo part it's clearly inspired slash based on a book that came out in two thousand eighteen by jeff benedict and armond katayan. And it's an attempt to make sense in real time of probably the most significant american athlete barring lebron james and michael jordan i would say of the last twenty. Five years maybe serena williams in that conversation. I think it's a very short list of people that do for. The tiger is kind of hanging with in the last quarter century and the film is tricky. Because they only aired part one thus far part two is next sunday and so i don't think you can necessarily spoiler film like this but it depends on. What kind of your you are if you're very engaged in the tiger woods story and his life. I don't think that this film necessarily will teach you a lot about the events of his life. There are not a lot of revelations. I think there are some emotional revelations there are some there's some I guess the matic framing that. Maybe you wouldn't necessarily put together if you weren't deeply entrenched in his story the movie especially the first half of the movie takes great pains to portray this father and son story and to show earl woods. Father as the kind of dr frankenstein at and making tiger woods into this kind of frankenstein monster for better and for worse in that he's incredibly powerful but there's like all kinds of emotional danger in his life I one thing that struck me as i re watched part one last night and i watched it with eileen. It's there's a lot of golf highlights in the first half. And there's there's there's not. There's not a lot of scandal there's not a lot of there is some psychology and there is a lot of sort of personal background about how tiger grew up and who he became. But because he has this sort of monochromatic mono-syllabic experience in the world where we just. He very rarely showed himself to us. Basically what you get is like ninety minutes of an extraordinary highlight reel dovetailing with the story of a father and a son and what they mean to each other. And i think if you're a casual observer my my instinct was. Is this going to work for people now. The second half is different. Can of worms. And i don't wanna spoil it for people but did in the first half. Did you find yourself having a hard time entering the story. I did also watch this with my husband. The aforementioned gulf maniac and the soundtrack to watching this was every time golf shot would be show. Its accuracy like you know it was like a little gallery of one. And he was doing it under his breath and then i was kinda. Are you aware that this is happening. And he was like sorry and then he just kept doing it at a lower volume. I have to say when you show golf. As just a highlight reel. Tiger woods is most incredible shots way. More interesting to me personally than the stuff that you guys have on the tv on sunday afternoon which is so boric. My guys pretty. Good a golf so i enjoyed it in that sense i agree with you that maybe it's not that i had a hard time. It and another interesting thing is that i. I do think if you know even a little bit about tiger woods you kind of know about the earl woods character and that is a pretty established part of his pop culture story. It's a big dad. Big character looming. Dad figure familiar sports figure in show bizz figure for sure and Greatness and then the fall. That's kind of what you know. And as as you mentioned there's a fall there there is a part to we won't spoil all of it but if you are watching this documentary you probably have some idea of what's going to happen in part to and the even najah it at the very end of part one which is the very last shot is a very famous woman. Just sidling up to the camera. I that's that's great filmmaking. And i think when the documentary is leaning in to that winning in that side of the story because it it leans into all the aspects of the story but when it goes for that bit of flair and narrative tension is is when it succeeds

"Greatest team ever assembled the nineteen ninety two us, Olympic men's basketball dream, team, never before heard audio of Michael Jordan, saying that he and this is the part Robin I disagree at least impart play a role in keeping Isaiah Thomas off and even the part. We play Jack from your interviews in from your podcast. The Dream Team tapes. It seems like even then Michael Jordan is saying listen. I didn't like the guy, but I wasn't the only one. If you're placing if there was a blame pie, what percentage goes to Michael? Jordan because it feels like Charles. Barkley Larry Bird Magic Johnson. Others didn't want this guy on the team either. "With hope. Said it always starts with hope right? B J Armstrong told us told Michael Lee. We did this piece in Jordan coming back. The twenty fifth anniversary of from coming back that Jordan always said the score zero zero. No matter what the score is he always thought it was zero zero so he thought he had a chance to win the game and so I'm not surprised at all that Michael may be believe somewhere in his psyche that if they could bring Phil back and convince Scotty Day that they could take one more run it. I'm sure he believed it. You know they all are delusional. In that way you obviously saw this story up close in real time as it was unfolding. Did watching the series. Leave you thinking any differently about Jordan's legacy than you had thought before me. No because you know you kind of know who the guy is. I like to think you know who the guy is. And you know what I've always said about Michael. His physical gifts were superlative and among the best ever but it was his will that separated him for everybody else. I mean lots of them have well but nobody to me to me has as much will as Michael Jordan. When I think about Jordan I was thinking about what Angelo Dundee said about Ali about the thrilla in Manila with Joe Frazier and he said through twelve thirteen rounds. They had both emptied their tanks except my guy had extra tank. That's what I think I want to think about. George could exhaust you to the point where you are exhausted. And then he found button to push the to will himself to another four or five minutes. And that's what he had. Nobody else had thanks so much David. What's my pleasure? Appreciate you having me on. "So David the backdrop for this whole series. This whole nine hundred ninety seven ninety eight season. Is this rare situation right. The Bulls have a dynasty and they know that winter lose. This is the end. Ninety Ninety eight cross already said the beginning season and he was never going to be the coach so when it was the last dance it was the last dance. We knew they weren't going to keep your team now from the outside looking in you go well. Look I mean. Look like they could still win another one. So why on Earth wouldn't you at least try? I mean even if you don't get there right I mean so in that sense. Ninety eight was very odd because you looked at this team and you thought it was still vital enough that if they tinkered with a little bit and added some pieces the following year they should still be able to compete. I mean they've got Jordan Pippen. They got Phil Jackson. What else do they really need? You know so that whole year while you knew kind of academically that it was going this was going to be it. You Still Kinda thought emotionally but is it. Somebody's GONNA stand up and go. You know what? Let's try it one more time. Let's just see somebody's going to overrule Jerry? Krause right and as it turns out there was only one guy that could do that. It was Jerry Reinsdorf. And he didn't do it for whatever reason and. I know he's one around telling people that he offered fill the job back after the six championship. I offered them the opportunity to come back. Earned the chance the opportunity to come back regardless of was said before now. But that's nonsense. I mean you're the owner of the team. If you want Michael Jordan back you say Michael Jordan's coming back and you know the circumstance that's going to bring Michael Jordan back in. That's bringing Phil Jackson back. So you go to the gym and say Phil's coming back next year figure it out. Hold a press conference to say. I Know My. Gm said that this is going to be fills last year of overruled him. I won't do that publicly so that everybody knows you're doing you don't do it. Fifteen years after the fact you know so they wanted it over. And that's what happened. Jerry Krause the Bulls. Gm definitely comes across as the villain the villain of the. But do you think that Jerry? Reinsdorf the Bulls owner got off a little easy absolutely absolutely got off. Easy owners can do whatever they want with the team. It's their team. They paid the money. These teams are incredibly expensive and they can do whatever they want. They can fire a coach every year and bring a new coach in or they can hire one coach and came for twenty years. It's their team so own that right literally and figuratively owned that if your GM is being recalcitrant and you WanNa bring the team back get a new GM. You know what I mean like. This isn't hard. Come on big boy sports. You know what I mean. So that's why think reinsdorf gets a pass and I said that while Kraus was alive. I've said since he passed I've written about it before he died have written about it since he died that his job was to take shit for Jerry Reinsdorf. That was his job. You often hear the idea that athletes want to leave the game. When they're at the absolute top and Jordan said something different than that in the final episode of the series then satisfying to leave at your peak. No or is it madden to leaving your is maddening because I felt like could winter a really believe that like all? Great Competitors Season Denial. He convinces himself that he could figure out a way to keep winning. You know it's the same thing that drove Mohammed Ali to fight Larry Holmes when everybody said what are you doing? You're nuts. You can't be Larry Holmes in you figure it out. I'll figure it out in the ring you know and so the great ones always think they can figure it out you know and I'm sure there's a part of him that really believes it you know. He said something very telling near the end. My Passion on the Basketball Court should have been in fiction. Because that's how tried to play. I play for them with hope. Start.

I want you to know now that the last dance has taken. Its final. Bow One pressing question still lingers could Michael Jordan and the Bulls have done it again and won another championship in nineteen ninety nine. Espn senior writer. Kevin Pelton attempted to answer this off debated hypothetical using advanced asked so I asked him to come on and tell us about his findings so Kevin you decided to not only imagine what would happen if Jordan had never left but try to quantify it. How did you go about figuring that out? I think it's a fascinating question. So you know went about this. Two different ways number one kind of look at coming off of that last and season what would we have projected for the players on the Bulls going into the what was eventually the Post Lockout? Ninety eight ninety nine season based on kind of our advanced projections We got the the oldest version of real plus minus that. Espn analytics has ever put together. So that was very cool and then also for everybody but Jordan. You have what they actually did on other teams during that ninety eight ninety nine season since of course he was the only one who wasn't claimed so you know combined those two things because you know they were in slightly different roles playing elsewhere since Jordan didn't actually play. How did you go about projecting what his stats would have been that season? That's something that we do now to try to project what's GonNa Happen in the upcoming season. We put together projections using that real plus minus that generally tend to beat Las Vegas pretty comfortably in terms of the preseason. Oh for over under so you know. Have some confidence in those in. And they actually you know the player projection model that. I do which is a little different than that called. Cheney says the Jordan would have been about the same in ninety eight ninety nine. Because you know you actually draw dropped off a little bit more that last season than you would have expected. Why is it called? Shaney after Sonic Legend Rush Shaney Khun Credible so. You're projecting all these players. Is there anything else that you factored into the analysis any statistics you could glean from the season? Well I mean I think one of the big wildcards here is Jordan's health because when he announced his retirement right after the lockout ended a thought about sands two words. I'm gone but I figured out all the fans and certainly media a little bit more than that so I was one of my reasons for being here. He had this finger injury that ultimately required surgery. He had cut the tendon in the ring finger on his shooting. Hand in a Cigar. Cutting accident while on vacation. So you know that would have been a question mark but what kind of pause it? Because it's more fun as a hypothetical. This way is Jordan said at that press conference. He had already made the decision to retire if he was still planning to play. There's no way he would have been on on vacation the week before the lockout might have ended. He would have been training to get ready. All Right Kevin so considering everything all the data how the players perform how they would have performed the competition. The hypotheticals all of it. Do you think the Bulls would have won again? If they had stayed together for sure would have made the NBA finals. Because one of the things that you know doesn't get discussed during this hypothetical is the east really fell off that lockout shortened season. That was the year that the Knicks ended up making. The finals is the eight seed after dealing with Patrick Unions. Injury during the regular season and Indiana which had given them such a tough line in the ninety eight conference. Finals wasn't really the same team in ninety nine before bouncing back in and get into the finals in two thousand so now San Antonio than would have presented a really difficult test they rate better in terms of their regular season point differential than any of the teams the Bulls faced in the sixth finals. They actually did make so you know if you assume that the bulls were kind of running on fumes by the end of ninety eight and might have been a little bit more by ninety nine. It would have been by far their their toughest obstacle their toughest challenge yet at the same time Is anyone going to bet against Michael Jordan the Bulls in the finals? Not after watching the series. Now and I'm also never gonNA say anything negative about him again. You don't want confi exactly. Thanks so much Kevin the traveling.

"More like Mo does deliver rods. Sundays actually Scotties that you and Carl Malone respond with one of the all time greatest biggest choke jobs in the history of sports and I think that's why we were so interested in exploring this line of trash talk because it really has to be the greatest line of trash talk ever delivered because it so affected this game Karl Malone Michael Jordan's legacy the last dance this podcast. The world has changed by the single line. The six greatest words ever uttered in trash-talk history. So for your story. You looked at the context around. This person. Foremost DID SCOTTY OUT. A history of trash talking. The greatest thing about this trash talking is it was delivered by. Guy Who never talk trash and people thought maybe that Jordan had fed him the line because Jordan was a relentless trash talker. Another thing that makes it so great and unique. Is that in this moment Scottie. Pippen who never says anything delivers this line. That just drill down into Karl Malone sub-conscious and just destroyed him as a free throw shooter and it's the psychology of it is really fascinating because according to a doctor who has studied trash talk at the. University of Connecticut Scottie. Pippen sort of accidentally tapped into Carl Malone's deepest darkest insecurities a he also bailed out my Jordan. Yes and I think Jordan. Ah Probably Reluctantly. Sort of credited Scottie. Pippen with with with saving his ass right there because if Malone makes even one of those free throws and the Bulls lose that game all of a sudden it's Oh Michael Jordan the greatest NBA player. That ever lived actually bricked a free throw. That could've won him a game in the NBA finals..

"Over the last few weeks we've been highlighting some of our colleagues pieces on Michael Jordan and I wanted to bring on. Espn daily recurring guest star. Dave Fleming. Who wrote about one of the most famous quotes from the second bowls three Pete so everyone who's listening and has no idea what happens in the finals between the Bulls and the jazz which you will learn about the Sunday on last dance. Maybe not listening. Now Dave you decided to take us deep inside a potentially conic moment from that series game one thirty five point. Eight seconds left on the clock. Michael Jordan has just hit a free throw to tie the game at eighty two then. The unthinkable happens Jordan Michigan tap. What happens next he is really? What is he Thirty seconds away from being lower case goat Michael Jordan. The jazz bring the ball down the court they try and set up a high pick and roll it results in a bad three point. Shot by John Stockton Karl Malone gets the rebound and is fouled by Dennis Rodman. So he goes to the free throw line with nine seconds left and a chance to basically win game one of the nine hundred ninety seven. Nba Finals again. If you don't know what happens don't keep listening what I got. This is what you're saying is I've essentially ruined the entire advance. Thank you very much. So he he steps up and what happens next day Scottie? Pippen of all people a guy who has normally kind of shrunk from the spotlight especially late in games in the and a guy not really known four. Quick off the cuff quips. He sort of silos up to Karl Malone and says.

They have a flexible return policy. So you can shop eighties. You can visit. Att Dot Com to learn how to shop online from the safety of your home. Twenty four seven seven contained restrictions apply. So jalen you go. Home after the heartbreaking loss in game seven of the Eastern Conference finals and you watch Jordan. Take on the jazz the finals. What is your strongest memory from watching the final? Set your well. My high school teammate. Who was in his wedding? Howard Eisley play for the Utah Jazz and I definitely was talking to him and we know this is what you do against. Mj I remember those phone calls. Yeah they do this. They're going to do that. Y'All y'all got this and so I was rooting against him. Because I want to Utah to win and I wanted to see our way and so to watch him. Play that final game. The way he did in the way it ended I he'd go. He should never play again. The crossover at the top the push off free throw line followed through. Make the jump. Shot Down Will Superman go into your head when you wash Jordan hit. That shot over Brian. Russell I couldn't believe it because if you think about how to how they got the ball when Utah possession. Ike Day was about to win the game. Stealing seventeen seconds. Light was setup for history to look at mailmen and John Stockton. A differ Te. They don't get the love that they deserve by people because we green count in. They never one one. If they WANNA Elise beat Mike. One time when we look at these scoreless or we see Karl Malone in the top three. Oh Man Carl long get more love on these top ten list or John Stockton and so for him to steal the ball coming baseline the way he did the team. They call time up the goal. WanNa WanNa make the game winning shot. Walk off at drop the mine. He should never have play basketball again. Zinke pushed off. No I don't that ain't a push off. Hey used to be a part of the ball on a a slot down or a block. He uses momentum against them. And he saying adopt. He was always on his toes. Byron Russell and that wasn't the first time he made a shot over him. They faced Utah back to back seasons in the previous season on the left wing. He made a game. Winning shot over Byron. Russell is well so it wasn't a push off a he uses momentum he just gave him a love tap. But you still got a knock it down and he did Jalen. Let's talk about the documentary as a whole for a moment. One of the themes of the documentary is sort of the cost of competitiveness. Right the cost of being a champion. Does it come at the expense of being a quote Unquote Nice Sky as we've seen in the documentary Jordan could be really hard on his teammates and he's aware of that and he's aware of his reputation. He got a little bit emotional about it. Now I think watching that at home. Everyone's like yeah. That's what it takes but most people aren't Michael Jordan as well. How do you regard his competitiveness? How he treated others and I guess whether other athletes can do the same thing many powerful people even if don't realize that they're doing it minimized dismiss and take for granted in a lot of cases the people that work with them and or against him that just that just a human nature that for some reason sometimes when you get an ego and makes you feel like that you're like above better than someone else when you're really not so when you are as powerful as Mj and then you had to go through the Celtics who are as skilled as any team ever the Lakers who were as flamboyant as any team ever and the Pistons are toughest any team ever the only way you can beat. Those guys is to do what they were doing. That's the only way in your call for an organization that hadn't worn it. The elevated greatness of magic in bird is appreciated because they went to teams that won championships before them and after them but yet they still raise the bar in was excellent but for players like MJ. And Tim Duncan their win places in one championships with a new coach. Phil in Pop. What ends up happening. Is You have to be multiple voices. You have to be the voice for the front office because players know you involved directly or indirectly who gonNa build around you for the coach because he's not establish and then for the other fourteen guys because you the best player if somebody plays for Pat Riley. Nick Sabin the bag all at time or a coach K. because those guys leaders in so if you're Mj net cage you have to play all of those roles in that situation and based on that you've got to know who deserves a pattern of back in a kick in the butt. And I appreciate though. Some accused him in my brother. Charles Barkley has one of selectively bullying. Scott Burrell is Steve Kerr. He was going to do that to anybody. And based on those dynamics that's why you sacrifice friendships in being light in order to achieve your ultimate goal and. I'm pretty sure based on what he's accomplished that he wouldn't change anything about the journ book so Jalen now that we are coming to the end of the last dance. Do you think the series will change your reshape public opinion in Anyway? I A public service announcement on your platform either terrific job on multiple shows. I see you on by five different shows one day. I just have to say this if you think Michael Jordan has an accomplished more in hasn't achieved more than Lebron James. Hopefully you don't know greatness is you don't know what the term actually means. We're not hating on your generation. Meena I know your time line. I know I know Nogales I know you gotTa know you tick talking. No you are pass. Oh tied reach pockets. I Know Lebron James Aim Belen in that black cat with them hoop earrings in those big pants. I'll I'll just be on talk of course but what will you be doing Jalen? I will be bored out of my mind and still having the same debate because we find ways to entertain. His his father of course passed away. His mother has been interviewed for the documentary but wondering in your reporting not just asking them about Jordan but enquiring into who they were. When did you find? I found that they were sounds like a cliche but I mean they were a family with a very strong religious background. They were a family with a very fierce independence streak. I talked to Roy Williams the basketball coach at the mercy of North Carolina and he started his career. He was one of the people who recruited Michael Jordan her Mike Jordan as he was known then and he was driving from Chapel Hill to Wilmington to play golf and just decides are Hill. I'M GONNA go over to Gordon Road. And he went over to that house and just remembered and let those memories wash over him and one of the images and his head was of James Jordan out there working on something in the driveway. I mean James Jordan. Put a car up on blocks. James Jordan could build a wooden stove is Michael told me. If he didn't know how to do it he'd read a book when Michael was with the Bulls. His pipes froze. I think in burst in his Condo and his dad was. Don't pay somebody to fix that. I could fix and James Jordan just goes up to Chicago and fixes his pipes. This is the thing they grew up with right. Michael's mother wrote children's books after he got famous in one of them. Her parenting philosophy was laid bare. Saying you want something is fine and will a good start doing something about it is what really counts at the end of that book when the mother puts her son to bed after his first successful basketball game she tells him with pride. I guess you aren't just a dreamer but a doer. Michael and I think what James and Dolores clearly talk was to dream to do and that one without the other is nothing at all all of the Jordan kids. They're five of them. You could tell that James endorsed Jordan did a hell of a job because I mean all those kids or something not just the famous one. It sounds like the sense. You got wasn't just that he held onto North Carolina's parents but that they informed everything he did. I mean the good and the bad and and understanding that they are both and And that it would shake the shaped you. I mean you know Imani. Perry is a professor at Princeton. Has just one of the smartest Americans there is and you know one of the things she said to me. I just pulled it up. Was You know talking about Michael's unrelenting work ethic? She says it is political. There is a transcendence of the expectations of what space you're going to occupy and you know. Republicans buy sneakers but who sneakers? Are they buying? Who is the person who all of these kids want to be like? You don't WanNa be like Mike. I mean Amani. Here's what you said about that. This is so interesting that was a significant transformation to have the entire nation. Say they want to be like a black man?.

"There's this myth. Michael Jordan is post racial and I just don't think that stands up to scrutiny. There's a bit in the story where you know. He and his friend when they were probably twelve years old when over to a neighbor's house to swim and were splashing around the pool. Like kids do and his friends parents get home and UH cities kids in the poll and see Michael Jordan in the pool and tell everybody to get out of the pool no more swimming and so Michael and his friend leave to walk away and they're outside and they hear all the other white kids jumped back in the pool. Those the things that he doesn't really talk about much but they stick with him. Did you get a sense through your reporting talking to people that those experiences the experiences of his family or the ones as you just described he grew up with impacted him back then when he was young. I absolutely I mean he has talked about how when he was in ninth grade roots came out and he was. He was really upset during that time. I was very very angry because learning about the history of what happened to us. And what routes did to me and I started to retaliate in school and took my mother to to come to me until me. It's the history of something that you should never forget but chipper rise above it and make an impact and make a change and make people aware Some of the pain we've endured in the next year is the year he supposedly got well. I mean technically I guess got cut from his high school basketball team. And that is where Michael Jordan was born. Kelso you mean when you say. He supposedly got cut. There's a fabulous illustrates story that everyone should read by Thomas like that did the first and invest in most comprehensive work on the subject and basically the wasn't like the coach just didn't think Michael was talented. He thought Michael was too talented to ride the bench. So basically what he did was he put him on the. Jv team where he could get a ton of minutes because he just thought this is a really great player who could be really great and he needs to be somewhere where he's having reps so the idea that he was sort of shunned in. I'm certain Michael believes it but when you start actually scratching little more complicated complicated than that way. Certain he believes it you hear talk about. And then there's Louis Smith. He started the whole process with me because when he made the team and I didn't I wanted to prove not just to Leeward Smith. Not just to myself but to the coach. Who actually picked lear over me on and make sure you understood. You made a mistake nude. Who's lying that someone who has carefully over many many years built a universe that allows him to be Michael Jordan and that requires certain laws of physics and the main one is thou shalt prove doubters. Wrong what was it like for him when he showed up in Chicago which was by far the biggest city our Linden September twenty eighth nineteen eighty four. I think I mean he was wide eyed and scared to death or what. His friends told me. You know it's funny it. You've seen him on the dock. George George Koehler. George Michael's for you know he's like turtle he's just always there. He's Michael's driver. He's one of his best friends. He's Assistant George. Does everything and so George Trove Alemao and Michael shows up and the Bulls evidently forgot to send someone to pick him up and so he's just standing out there just as George said scared to death and no one is there to get him in Georgia roles and one two down like you need a ride or you Michael Jordan and Michael was like I do need a ride and that was. I don't know my God. That was thirty six years ago and Georgia's still there well. When he showed up in the documentary I was wondering. Where did he come from? That's where he came from. I mean the no one. He was the first person Michael Ever met in Chicago. And he's still there. I mean Michael's loyalty is something that gets discussed. But I don't think people realize the degree to which like if you're in his tribe you're in his triumph.

Then went back to Indiana guys held core but then game four. There was an incident that led to being suspended for game. Five Hawker Reggie Miller. This has been brewing since game. What's left of your screen right there? Somebody should've been Jalen rose right. That's Jalen rose. Suspended for game five believing off the bench. That's just bad institution of rule. A little bit ordered a lot of lobster not just sat there one of the like of big time watching a game and then we got Blowout Day game and Blue Route Day game. Feel back because I was like man. Maybe I let down my tea but then I was more upset at the league like I should have got suspended. I'm sure it'll be a major plot point in the last dance episode by episode eleven through twenty. Hear them Jason Erna direct episode. You Jalen rose so the Pacers lost game five probably because you weren't there Wa wa you as one game six and forced to game seven in Chicago which was the first time an MJ led bulls team had played the game seven since. Zuma through traffic on ninety four freeway yes happening. We bought the NUDIST. We bought the dude that nothingness. All I recall thinking is that we're we're about to do something special and being a young player. Look this look at the talent that they had. They have Phil Jackson. One of the greatest coaches of all time Michael Jordan Scottie. Pippen players all time Steve. Kerr made a huge jump. Relate net game heartbreaking jumper all minutes the first time all this just reminded me of like like a concussion just came back to me so lane game. We had a jump ball goes Michael Jordan who six six rick. Smits who seven foot three jump ball right you get this job. Get a chance to go up five. Six thirty Michael can really jump. With Spitzer's seven four spits. Check that the right. The Pippen Smits. I think the tap the Scottie Pippen stills it any kicks the Steve currently hit a huge three night game so we weren't his name when we talk minorities her but yeah they had those guys that we have Reggie Miller Mark Jackson. Chris Mullin Larry Bird on asylum carlaw. Who went on to be a championship level code so there was some star power in the building. It was a marquee staging. It just really hurts. Think back at We were so close yet so far away from a into finals. That you you were as you said a young pup at the time. How did you feel after losing to a guy you had idolized was a I in the fourth quarter made to jump shots in the role cats plus one Lewis on rose around the Tonio Davis screen to the jump shots at sixty nine? They call town so I get a chance to jump and be like Hail Yam students. Michael Jordan Scottie. Pippen walked to the bench with their heads done and it was like six seven minutes to go on a game. "Was. Bj Armstrong is fast one time and then obviously we had to. We had to the Hornets. There was George Karl. Didn't say hi to me at dinner. I was motivated to beat the The Sonics and the ninety sixth finals. It seems like he believes this stuff would have been. I think better. If the filmmakers pointed out how ridiculous this stuff was but is quite drexler. I'm like increasingly surprised. In retrospect that he actually said that Clyde Drexler was a threat before going on to You know destroy him in game one of that final series because other than that he disliked talks and such kind of you know belittling terms about everyone from Dr Armstrong to Gary Payton. He's so disparaging of Gary Payton and we have data like he said the glove glove. I didn't have any problems with the glove. Michael you shot thirty seven percent in the three games Gary Payton guarded you in the final final. Three Games of the one thousand nine hundred finals like geared paid. Did give you some trouble but it would have been nice to before Gary Payton in that moment of had the last word over somebody to correct the record there but they Michael Jordan just say. I had no problem with the defensive player of the year. Five laughing an IPAD just laughing it's laughing and mocking Gary Payton and saying I had no problem with the glove. It's what he said after that. I had a of other things on my mind. And then we cut to with the insinuation that he lost those games on purpose so he could win the championship on Father's Day. I didn't take that but the insinuation to me was that he was so thinking about playing on father's Day a week later that he just you know the most competitive fucking athlete on the planet as we've heard Ad Infinitum in this documentary just couldn't focus because he was thinking about his late father and having to play on father's Day and that was the motivation. Really come on Man. I mean to me. This is like the portrayal. This goes back to what we talked about last week. About how the in the inclusion of the gambling allegations and Jordan's gambling history is in there so the Jordan can have the last word and clearly as we've also discussed everyone is discussed. This is a Michael Jordan production in some way. He had the ability to not talk about certain things. There are clearly things in there that are not discussed including his family. And yet all of this is in there and all you can take away is that this is like the most uncharitable miserable grievance filled unfriendly dude and twenty years later twenty. Five years later feels empty to me. It feels like he didn't enjoy any of it except in the moment and he certainly doesn't enjoy it now. So what are we left with a bunch of people who either suck up to Michael Jordan or roll their eyes about Michael Jordan but ultimately it doesn't feel like Michael Jordan has actual friends who liked being around him and sharing those moments beyond? What happened on the court? Are you trying to say that real championships or the friends we made along and currently I? I take that back because his best friend in the Chiron was. His driver has paid employees. Yes Yeah Jolan interesting. Kind of contrast and these episodes was the way in which the film but also the balls players talked about Scottie. Pippen and refusing to go into the game in nineteen ninety the year. The Jordan wasn't on the team. Pippen was mad that Phil Jackson drop a play for Toni. Kukoc play their worked. Incidentally and was insubordinate and just sat on. The Bench. Refused to go in after we you know. We hear that after the game bill car rate. I'm set in tears in the locker room. That Scotty let everyone down. Scotty is like strangely defiance Here saying you know I screwed up but I would do it the same way again. Which is which was weird but the way that all of that is portrayed as if you know obviously it's not a great thing to do for your team or for yourself but the way that it's portrayed as this kind of unforgivable sin in sports and everything that Jordan does is forgivable because of winning like that that was telling to me jaw. I think that's what Jordan thought and you can see that carried out in the way that they presented that right it. It's funny because it happens in the midst of a montage where we see that. It's not necessary to be an asshole to be great. You know were Michael. Jordan has stepped away to play baseball. The Bulls are still very good in Michael Jordan's absence. They went fifty five games and finished in third place in the Eastern Conference and advanced to the Eastern Conference. Semi-finals Scottie Pippen showed in modeled another way of leadership and even says he's like hey. I think the guys are happy because nobody was yelling into them. The whole time but Scotty makes his one mistake in his career. Which is I mean. I guess we can quibble about whether or not it's understandable and not but given the history had Toni Kukoc Coach and management and filling like he was being overlooked in a moment. That normally would have gone to Michael. It sort of makes sense right but it felt like that was a way from Michael Jordan. It'd be like Hey Scotty is not who you think he was. I was the real leader on this team. I'm the guy that got them over the hump. This is how you have to be a champion I. We've never quit on you in quite that way. Even though Michael Jordan quit on his team but what by retiring now? And that's that's exactly how this was framed. I mean look it's not defensible. What Scottie Pippen did? He made a mistake and it's a huge mistake. It was more than a huge mistake. It is not something you would expect a leader of any professional sports team. He threw a fucking hissy fit and stop playing in the critical moment of a playoff game against heated rival of the time that a huge mistake. I love.

It's ten to six going into Sunday. Of course the next day the Europeans come back. They win in epic fashion. So in some way you can say that. Mj As an assistant. Captain kind of screw the American team. Yeah I mean I guess you can't. You can't really underestimate the insanity of Ian Poulter so if you think he's GonNa be intimidated by Michael Jordan. Being there earned suited by anything really. It's probably just going to spur them on. Yeah especially the Ryder Cup. In two thousand fourteen. Mj's at Gleneagles. There's this epic shot. this is. There's this epic photo of him conscious. Posted up behind the first tee. He's all by himself as a big blue background. It's just MJ. That's shot has been used all over the place on the Internet in two thousand sixteen. Mj's at Hazeltine. I was there. I remember seeing him on the. I T kinda dappling ever just tapping up all the players. And then you and I were both at the twenty eighteen Ryder Cup and France. For some reason I don't remember seeing him there. But he was there in phrase. How could he miss it he was? He's staying chummy with the United States team On Wednesday night. He gave another speech to the team. He's talking he tells a story about how in one thousand nine hundred three the NBA Finals. Going for their three peat. They are up three to heading to Phoenix for game. Six and seven and M J. He pumps up his teammates by saying. I'm bringing one suit one bag. One change of clothes were only going there for one game. That is what we're using to inspire golfer to hit the fairways and France. I think we can Soundly expect MJ. To be there at at whistling straights in September. I'm Kinda worried that. Mj has not been particularly successful. You know as a Ryder Cup presence in. Us is success over these years. Not really lined up to Basically just bow down to his celebrity. And we're like. Hey you know what Michael wants to be involved. He can be involved. Yeah that's the problem with that. One suit story to is like what event has more unnecessary uniforms in the Ryder Cup. So I don't know they brought like twelve outfits for four days but a away from the US teams you know. Jordan was getting tight in playing much more often to or stars at home so he knows these guys that are on these teams because they play together all the time. He'd played the bears club or at the Floridian in south Florida with this early Jupiter crew. You Know Luke Donald was there Keegan. Bradley Rickie Fowler Ricky had a great quote. When asked about you know what are you guys play for? What are what are the stakes? These matches he told Jason Sobel help play you for whatever you want. Whatever makes you scared that makes me scared. I know our our makes me wonder what amount would monetary amount would. Make me scared like if I'm playing with. Mj And he says Sean were planned for whatever makes you scared. What is that number so granted Jordan is Jupiter Golf Legend by now he's Kinda Godfather and Keegan? Bradley is one of the guys got close to him. Signed a shoe deal with him. Who knows if that had anything to do with their matches are not well? That's that's the beautiful part about it and that's why I love playing with them and I called my human ATM. I can just go out there if I need some cash. Call but he. He really is a good player. I mean but in the fun part of a plane with him is he's always in your ear. Nj at the end of the day was great friends to him. He knew unto. Draw the line between you know. This is fun on the course and this is all right. My Guy needs some support But it's hard to be to golf mythmakers Anthony Kim and Michael Jordan being one story so anthony. Kim told the Brian Wacker about a decade ago. Actually he echoed. What Keegan said about Jordan being an easy mark on the course said this about? Mj Have you heard that expression about taking candy from a baby. Yeah Jane I played but I could never take any money from that man. It's not like anything that MJ plays against them for is really going to hurt him. Too much. And my favorite story about that is a couple of years ago. Mj had taken over the Charlotte Hornets twitter account and was doing a back and forth with questions from fans and you tweet the Hornets and the MJ would respond from the Hornets and Keegan tweeted at the Hornets. Basically saying like ask. Mj about our golf matches and MJ responded from the Hornets Twitter Account. Saying you don't see me playing golf in Air Keegan's do you. I've seen that swing. He's got this dip in it. That's just getting more and more pronounced. I Dunno not trending in the right direction. It's not it's not quite Barclay. Ask but I don't know what it is about these guys that just have that hitch. I mean I'd love to play him as a four handicap. I think actually might get terrified once I was there in real life. Do you think that you could actually make swing in front of Michael Jordan? I don't know but One thing that's clear about Jordan is how much he values control of the course when he's playing because look he belonged to some of the most private exclusive clubs in South Florida like the bears club in the Floridian but that wasn't enough He likes to be able to play in five or six He likes to be able to play it as fast as he wants. You know under three hours for eighteen so eventually this stuff wasn't enough And so he decided to build his own golf club in this place. Grove. Twenty-three is in. Its in Hobe sound ricky plays. They're quite a bit justin. Thomas plays. They're quite a bit. I know tiger at least got out there one or two times. No they're not hurting. The founding membership is million dollars founding investors they had like seventy five guys. They were all putting up at least a million dollars. I mean it's Michael Jordan. You gotta you gotta put up to show up here but the interesting thing about the routing grove. Twenty-three is that it's designed by this Guy Bobby Weed. And he made it in this Double Helix type routing so it can be played in a bunch of different nine hole combinations or in shorter three hole leaps or six whole loops. There's all this flexibility where you can jump around from whole the whole which Jordan loves and basically what it all comes down to is like you never really have to stop playing right and that's part of MJ's identity is like just keep playing golf. I don't know so there's all these opportunities for emergency holes or you can settle a bet or you know basically just keep on going if the action is flowing so yeah it's great for someone who loves double or nothing. There's always another hole that you can play it kind of sounds like a Gulf maze. I know that's Kinda the impression I have. Hopefully we'll get out there at some point but I don't know maybe not after this podcast. I'm but I so. What do we make of this Sean? At the end of the day is is Michael Jordan. Just nuts oh man. I don't think he's not. I think he's just got the Gulf Bug and he's incredibly competitive person and I've all. I've often said that some of the most incredible athletes Jerry Rice steph curry who are addicted to competition. It's not shocking. When they find Gulf that they become addicted to that as well like it is not something that comes easy or natural to just about anyone unless your father is teaching you play from two years old on like Tiger Woods. It's just kind of it's a tricky damn game. I have a hard time where I play it and we just kind of beat our heads against the wall and I feel like that's kind of what Jordan has has relished about it as you can continue to beat your head against the wall. Have Fun doing with doing that. Gamble a little bit. Get BETTER AT THE GAME. Get worse at the game but have something to do every day especially when basketball is over with. Yeah and I I mean I think one of the reasons that people always admired tiger woods is because he is that this like unattainable level of greatness. There's nothing really relatable about. The Way Tiger approached the game off but I think the way that MJ approached the game actually was kind of relatable for some people This crazy just given everything we've just said but the way he plays golf is some version of like golfers dreams. He lives in this world where it's okay to play thirty six holes every day where he can build his own private course from scratch and play with the best to replace in the world and you know bet whatever. He wants to baton. Obviously the reality is a little more complex but on some basic level. Michael Jordan is a guy who loves golf a lot and he just gets to play it one hundred percent on his terms. That's GonNa do it for this week's episode of the drop zone which was expertly produced by Lee Finer. Thanks LE- next week one woman. Buick off of Tiger Woods. We'll tell you the bizarre story of how she did it. Just what happened next? Thanks for listening..

"Who are the most famous golfers in the world? Is there extra pressure being returning champ a little bit but I mean that's fun? Yeah I WANNA be the guy that everybody's in for Brooks cupcake isn't on that list. Neither Jon Rahm. Tiger Woods is still number one the whip tired and glory but then it's Donald trump but I always enjoy golf and I've had a lot of fun with partner. We're GONNA like that partner. Barack Obama President Obama talked trash all day. Five and a half hour number. Trash-talk took all these great golfer may doesn't hit the ball on the team but he's straight as an Arrow man in the next on. The list is probably Michael Jordan. There's no doubt that Michael the Better Golfer I am of course of. I was playing twice a day for the last fifteen years. Then that might not be the case. So how'd the greatest basketball player of all time become one of the world's most legendary golfers? I'm Sean Czar. And this is the drop zone. He is the brightest star in the NBA Galaxy the leading scorer in the league. A man who always has the right stuff on the court or on the course. I'm here with my co host Dylan to chair. How's it going? You're a pretty big basketball fan. I know you watched the Sunday night. Espn at least the first episodes of the ESPN documentary. Yeah and I mean to me. The crazy thing about this documentaries. It's not just about Jordan. It's become this cultural event. I feel like everyone everywhere. They're not up to much so everyone was ready to post up for this event. I did I did with my parents. My mom was the one who made employment viewing for the entire family back at home. So that's when you know it's a big deal for our purposes major is somewhat a big deal because he's a golf addict. I think there's probably a simpler way of putting it. The guy picked up the game in the eighty S. He fell in love with it continued throughout the nineties throat. His playing career in now. He's made it a massive part of his life. Ever since we're going to dive into just what golf means to Jordan with Jordan means to golf in this episode of the drop zone Jordan has become this silent figurehead in the game. He tends every single Ryder Cup basically. He's befriended number of players down in Florida players on the PGA tour. He plays constantly the stories that you hear about his game have become kind of legend. You know he plays. In these private courses and Keegan Bradley and Luke Donald and Rickie Fowler kind of talk about what it's like to play with 'EM J it's kind of ferocious having these five and six seven figure wagers on their little matches. It's Kinda crazy but most recently even founded his own golf club so he can play whenever he wants how he wants with whomever he wants. Michael's Kinda got figured out. It seems like anytime. I'm a diverse club. You're out you're really around in your golf cart with a cigar in your mouth off smoke six ago today. Do you play golf almost every day. Almost over there and sometimes thirty six sls always thirty six and what you handicap these days four. And it's bad for so don't yeah. I don't think that you know I heard it was a two so four Helen. Ross from the PGA tour. She wrote a story Three years ago detailing how Jordan was introduced the game by Davis love of all people. What's your favorite Michael Jordan story? When we first got him playing golf. I had an old wooden driver back in the day and He wanted to hit a driver off the tee so he hit mine and it broke and he thought I set him up. He hit so hard that he that he broke my wooden driver. Probably because he didn't hit it in the middle of the club face but We created a monster with him. Davis Love was able to scrap up a a full bag and some golf balls at Jordan could use whenever he wanted to play. Everyone needs their own set of clubs. So I'm Jay very quickly. Got The Gulf Bug as one does as you did. As I've done Dylan. He ends up getting really good at it. Tell me about this kemper. Lakes beat the pro event. Yeah I mean Lord. First of all. This is nineteen eighty-seven MJ's the newly minted scoring champ. So He's scoring thirty seven points every night first team all NBA. Obviously but he's also getting really good at golf. Hi I'm water. Softeners and welcome to channel five beat the pro contests It's hosted by this local. Tv Station where basically they bring in celebrity guests and he gets one shot at one hundred fifty yard par three to start off the day and then everyone else just has to match. You Gotta get your ball closer to the whole than that of our celebrity pro that will qualify you to play in the beat the pro tournament. They've got golfers golfers and golfers. Everyone wants to challenge. Mj I WANNA know Michael. Are you ready for this one Arabia? I've been practicing so I was wondering if he would chunk it or scarlet or do anything that any of US might do in a high pressure situation. Yeah I would not handle this all I is GonNa be Owning Press Office fun game pressure game. You know it's one hundred fifty yards in its Michael Jordan so for him that's just a pitching wedge. There's a little drizzle and he grabs pitching wedge. The cameras right on him. Pures it an not bad. I don't think they can beat that. Eight feet one and a half inches directly over the flagstick. It almost hits the flagstick on the way by lands. You know four or five feet past ends up eight feet one inch away and nobody beat him all day not a single golfer. All right my turn again. Jordan's basketball dominance ascended at this point it becomes MVP. He went to couple titles but his Gulf also ascends becomes a mid single digit handicap by the mid nineties. He skipped the Bulls first visit to the White House after their nineteen ninety one championship. Play Golf. Yeah more on that. Later to Davis Love in one thousand nine hundred one was quoted by the Chicago Tribune saying that every single summer Jordan goes down to Pinehurst. He's from Carolina. He blocks out a full hours worth of Ti- times so just so he can enjoy the peace and quiet play at his own pace. I think that's one hell of a flex but this brings me to one of my favorite Jordan Gulf `ISMs during the ninety two Olympics. I I think it's one thing to be obsessed with the game. But if you look at what he did in that summer Jordan makes it seem like he loves golf even more than he loves basketball especially at the Olympics. Davis love actually told reporters around this time that he thought Jordan would pursue a career as a pro golfer after basketball. Do you play golf. You Lofton said you'd like to loved her competitor. I know when basketball. This is not a part of me anymore. He will play a Nissan talk about that time in golf. Does infamy and being just gonNA play the game. I don't learn. Just play the game on competed that game and if I ever get good enough. I'm going to try but if I'm not if I have a not good enough. I'm certainly not gonNA embarrassments. At this time. They were finally opening up for professionals to compete on the basketball stage. It wasn't just an amateur competition which meant that. We had to get Michael Jordan. We got Larry Bird. We got magic. Johnson we need to get Michael Jordan involved. The thought back then was Michael Jordan place thirty six holes of golf ninety days during summer. What the Hell is he going to be doing? Playing Basketball Daily head coach in order to get Jordan to commit to the Olympic team. He had to promise Jordan that he can play golf wherever they went. Whether it was qualifying or over in Spain in Barcelona in Monte Carlo Jordan had to be able to play golf during the day prior to games at night. That was the promise Ken Rosenthal. The famous baseball reporter was working early in his career at the Baltimore Sun. And this is a quote that he has an historian. George says in one thousand nine hundred four we practice twice a day and if it was going to be like that no way I would be here but Chuck. Daly reassured me he said. Bring Your Golf Clubs Play Basketball night. That's what I've been doing. It's insane to think that MTA wouldn't have been on the Dream Team if they hadn't made concessions for him to play golf. The Dream Team doesn't exist without Jordan's promise that he can play golf every day. I mean that quote from Ken. Rosenthal came after he played thirty six holes in the morning. Shot Seventy Five. And then he shot eighty six and then. He Shot hoops at night. They beat Panama in a qualifying game. One hundred twelve to fifty two. Which means you know. The Dream Team probably doesn't need Jordan but they wouldn't be as legendary squad without him. Obviously it's not the Dream Team of Jordan and Jordan is not there without golf so weird golf gave you the Dream Team. So he brings his golf clubs over to Spain. They played Monte Carlo Golf Club constantly at least eighteen holes each day for Jordan sometimes thirty six. Obviously it doesn't hurt when your head. Coach also plays Golf Rick. Reilly later report that Chuck Daly Be Jordan one morning during the Summer Games. He beat him by one stroke and daily. I think he might have been joking but he kind of implied that he was not going to play with Jordan again. He had beaten him once. That's enough for him. And according to Riley story quote the next morning at the crack of dawn Jordan rang dailies room. He got no response. Went directly to dailies room and knocked then he pounded. He will not go away until he got his rematch. He got it and he won by a shot. The ruthless competitor is unable to accept when he loses my brother. Whenever I used to be my brother in anything we always had to do. Double or nothing. Like that's what Jordan was all about anyway Seventeen years later two thousand nine Jordan would end up auctioning off his Gulf goods from like the ninety two summer for charity. It's big old Wilson Gulf Bag. I think you're kind of a big deal. If you know sporting goods from just your hobby that you play on the side if you can actually auction that stuff off. How much did that go for? Honestly it didn't go for that much. The Gulf bag probably went for like eighteen hundred dollars some other things like a golf hat. Just didn't sell as much as they wanted to. But all the proceeds went to charity. So is it was all good. I would shell out for a Jordan game. Us Golf gambling hat. Yeah Sam That Chuck Daly Story though I think is probably the best transition for George Gambling Issues Gulf gambling. I think you found out a bunch of epic stuff that happened. Yeah I mean it's interesting that you mentioned your brother always wanting to play double or nothing because that definitely seemed to be Jordan's emo also I mean as golf legend grew. There were these stories that began to leak out of just what it was like to play with the guy. Why are there? Rumors unsubstantiated quite unsubstantiated that still exist there that relate your departure to gambling. He would play cards on team planes. There's a legendary story about He would bet his teammates. Whose LUGGAGE WAS GONNA come out first. Then they figured out that he had paid off airline.

"Only player That the the age forty plus that scored over forty in a game. This is what Michael Jordan did. This was the I understand both of your points given the information at the time. There are reasons that he did what he did and also basketball is not boxing or anime or football where you stick around too long. You're paying a different kind of price with your health. So make rip the uniform off. You have no regrets. J. In terms of making sure that you've got to squeeze every ounce of whatever was there. Because the second to last season he was still an all star caliber player just the last season that he really wasn't anymore but when we say should he have any regrets? I take that to mean in hindsight. In retrospect knowing what we know now Stephen They may have done more business. I mean the the place was packed but you could hear a pin drop. Even when they were winning there was no energy in the building back then and it was just. I always felt you know because at the time I was supportive of it Jordan. Still going to be great but especially that last season knowing what we know now. I'll bet he liked that one back. Why Jordan go out like that particularly when you contrast it Jay with what how it could have ended in Chicago. I take your take on. Espn RADIO AND ESPN news. When you've accomplished what Michael Jordan has accomplished. It's hard to see that he would have any regrets for many of it but we'll get a better sense of it over the course of the weekend as we finally get the last dance arriving Sunday night. Wait FOR IT. Gives us a real peek behind the curtain? I'M GONNA keep taking your take on who you think could beaten Michael Jordan and the Bulls in their prime jubilee say Espn Eight.
