Chad Johnson: I was never covered
Hey, y'all look for the parties fisa Maryland podcast is seven thirty. We have an awesome show for you guys today with Chad Johnson Ocho Cinco the former NFL wide receiver who was six times a pro bowler three times a first team, all pro and a second team. All pro in two thousand three. He led the NFL in receiving in two thousand six, seven hundred sixty six career receptions and more than eleven thousand yards. He had a tremendous NFL career in his path to getting to the NFL is unorthodox best, and I really dive into that with him. How did you get there from Miami Florida to Santa Monica, California, to Beaverton Oregon to Cincinnati, Ohio. How's it? God do that and to me, oh, Joe Cinco is one of those guys that really redefined the wide receiver. Vision. I think he's one of those guys that made it a marquee must pay max deal kind of position and never had any qualms voicing his opinion. In fact, he still has no qualms voicing his opinion. He was one of those guys that was flamboyant and who had a personality that transcended the game. People who did not really follow football. New Cinco was know who he is and followed his career because of just how flamboyant and outspoken he was and continues to be. So it was a pleasure to get the opportunity to chat with Chad about ball in life and and growing up in Miami and what he saw and how that impacted him and developed him and molded him into the man. He is and how now at forty years old, how he's volved as a person. So appreciated his time so much. And I think you guys will be. Really interested in seeing what CHAD'S doing right now. He's a part of a brand new six part series from ward winning filmmaker, Evan Rosenfield hip hop, pioneer uncle Luke Campbell, and it's fascinating. It's called the warriors of liberty city, and it's a really keen in depth. Look at the impact of football on that neighborhood in Miami Florida. The talent that comes out of that neighborhood is absolutely jaw-dropping, whether it's devante Freeman, Antonio, Brown, Duke Johnson teddy Bridgewater, dalvin, cook, Chad, Johnson, all these guys came from that neighborhood. And I actually went there recently with Antonio Brown, and I saw his impact on those young men seeing what they can be teddy Bridgewater was with Antonio. Dalvin cook was with Antonio that day. Watching those young men interact with dalvin Antonio and teddy knowing they can tangibly see and feel these guys are me and they did this, and that means I can do this football is the vehicle you hear Chad discussed that as well. Fascinating conversation with a fascinating human being and it was a great pleasure in my life to have the opportunity to spend just a few minutes with him, maybe twenty minutes or so. But it was a really fascinating twenty minutes. So I look forward to your feedback on it. Hit me up on Twitter. I want to hear more from you guys about this podcast. I want to hear your thoughts. I want to hear your reaction to what what you're hearing from these individuals and are per. She ate so much, whether I'm in the airport, I'm in the grocery store. It makes me so proud when you guys mentioned Marty's Miss America podcast to me. And this is a good one. But before we get to Joe Cinco, we haven't very important matter to discuss bacon. Let's have a chat with Chad Johnson are man, Ocho Cinco hope y'all enjoy. I'd like to start with the warriors of liberty city, the scribe, what it's like to grow up in that area. Really words really can't put it. Description, you know with that atmosphere is like, you know, once night falls, you know, this is war zone, especially back then. I mean, it's bad now. So you gotta think back when I was growing up, it was, you know, ten times worse. I had to be inside before the before. The porch lights came on, the street lights came on and it was dangerous. No, you didn't know what was going to happen where it was going to happen at at at what time? It was crazy. It was crazy at that time back then. And obviously it hasn't changed much what it's not as bad, but still bag. You know, the killing still happening. How does that shape you as a young person when that is your normal? What is that like for me when you come come from a background like that, those type of round type atmosphere. It it mentally toughens you in social way where things really don't bother you? I don't wanna use the word type of character, but it build a certain certain role and in ability to deal with. You know things in life that you're gonna have to deal with, and they really don't body was much because of upbringing because of the atmosphere that you dealt with. You know it just it just ties you up a little bit. I actually just went there. Chad. I was, I went down to trash pile stadium and liberty. That's your spotted and. Oh, yeah. With Antonio Brown and story with him. And you know, he is from there as well. Do Johnson is from their teddy Bridgewater and Dalvand cook were all also with Antonio in me down there and they were painting a very similar picture to that, which you painting and discussing the value of football. What is the value of football in that in that area? That is your out bet is you're out, you're you're, he knows sports. You're out in football in the fact that Luther Campbell created this program twenty nine thirty years ago. He gave these young kids out. We're with you gotta. Think about it. We don't have the resources. We don't have outlets, you know, only speak of myself. I deputy wanted to be an academic scholar. And did you know an academic scholarship and go that route? So what would my only outlet football that was it? What do you think happens to you if you don't, if you didn't have football, did. Jio easily easily. No hesitation. So growing up there, I wanna just want you to take me down your path. How does a guy that grows up in Miami end up in Santa Monica alongside Steve Smith? I just want to walk for people that don't know your pay. A lot of people know your flamboyant personality. They know your NFL career. They don't know how you got there. Take me there. So raise by my grandmother, she kept a tight close knit on me. You know, I had trouble child as we all do more school related. You know, refuse to give me at all at all. So throughout three who high, she kept me close to her as possible being she was a teacher and counter on Miami Beach on everybody who considers beat. So I went to kindergarten elementary school junior high on Miami Beach, even though we lived in liberty city and the fact that I was able to. With it is because she was a teacher and account at the time over on the when it was time for high school. Obviously, I wanted to go to the inner city schools where teddy Bridgewater and in and Tonia win. I was thinking of going, maybe I was one of my meals western or Jackson, I again, my mom wanted to keep an eye on me to give me outside outside liberty area, and I went to school there, maybe senior high on my beach. I thought it was a bad idea. Of course. I didn't understand it until long after the fact it was better to play against the competition, then play with him actually to gauge yourself. So at that point it was time to graduate. She is fade up. I graduate late, you know, I do, but I Gregory late. I, I go to any. I in a school called Lincoln university as a Ritz or freshman, and I get in trouble fighting and they send me back home and expelled. And that is how I ended up in LA. My grandmother said, I've done all I can. I wash my hands. It's time that you go live with your mom and let her take over. And that's how I ended up at Santa Monica college with Steve Smith, went live my mom and LA and we know how it was third goal Samir from Santa Monica to Oregon state for one year and and NFL career. So amazing. I mean, it really is. It's kind of amazing when you consider that pads, just an unorthodox path and very bad path. I guess a lot of us take on orthodox pass. You're talking about not understanding your grandmother's philosophy of sending you to Miami senior high school. Once in like when you see the wealth and splendour around you every day on south beach, and then you joke, suppose that with what you experienced liberty city. I didn't. I didn't really, you know it was. It was it was a joy to look at, you know, going to school in the Ferraris Lamberty. I mean, it's it was unbelievable back. Now you have to think this is the eighties along with the eighties was when my was really hate used the word that was when all the the big time, you know what was out back then all the kingpins and in early late late, late eighties, early nineties. So I was I was able to see all that and then going back home and having dreams of, you know, owning, you know those those cars on the jury, like it was. It was fascinating to me, but still my focus was always football and always had those aspiration of dreams of living that look serious lifestyle one day. And when did you know you in great. Oh, I understand understand it too late. Probably in my second year second league when I understood my understood my body understood my skill set. It under still what I could and couldn't do and made my my weaknesses, my strength as receiver. That's when I knew. Okay, I got it. I got it. Now you've had so many unique in various random exploits, whether it was dancing with the stars WWE Major League Soccer, you wrote a bull, man, you wrote a giant blue in the PB. Oh, what did I learn when you jump on a bowl that they're truly powerful, they are extremely powerful despite what it looks like from watching from afar and I do it again that was enjoyable. That was a very enjoyable humbling experience. Those are really good athlete. You've always had this great interest in soccer, right? Yeah, my love. How was that born? You know, I gravitated to the game of soccer as young kid growing up city. You know, I p when you go to p. they just pull all. Different balls out soccer ball, tennis ball, football, basketball, and I gravitated to this ball for some reason as a little kid with really no experience. No, no upbringing around and I just, I just enjoyed it. And then started playing back then. Did you ever have the opportunity to meet Rinaldo? Yeah, course. Many, many times very friend of mine was he like he's put in the words. He would be like a. Maybe like a a Brady he'd be like a Brady if I'd have to use a comparison, not like his his, his urge to wanna be better or to curiosity on our training, how we train football, eating habits, she health then during? Yeah, we've been friends the past decade. I go watch them play every year. And matter of fact, I'm going to watch him. I'm going to see him September, thirtieth and you've into the opportunity to go to China with him last summer, and I got to kind of see the, it's he's famous Chad. I mean, there's a famous over here in states that dude is famous now that's that's a different different type of famous is a different type of famous who went when you're around him, and you see that describe for us what that's like. It would be similar to through what it would be like Michael Jackson was here you've ever seen my Jackson walkout somewhere. It got to the where. In Cuneo out anywhere. Exactly. That's exactly how it is, would him. And obviously the settings that we meet in the we meet in or always either he's at practice or I see him after game. So we're never in that setting where it's I happen to deal with the crowd is so, but I I know how it is. It's interesting that you have to be someone who has his personal relationships with these transcendent people. You mentioned Brady play against him a lot. You mentioned what we discussed Rinaldo when you have that opportunity to have a more intimate type of relationship, what do you what things have you gleaned personally, from Renaldo or for Brady, I painted as late this month, normal, normal friend and all like, really, I don't really think about it like that. The we the way you pose the question it just to me just regular guy that I've known for almost. Decade now you know, and that's it. And then when we when we do converse, when we talk is not even about its ninety minute about soccer, you know, hey, how's everything going? Everything. Good, you healthy? Yeah. Cool. All right. Well, listen, I need to take it. I'm coming to the game. So Tim, thirtieth good luck. They healthy full Mets it and it. It's. It's just that continuous checkup and seeing how one is doing just over the years. What I saw that you had given some consideration to coaching, what thoughts have you given to that recently on? I can't. I don't wanna be busy and I don't wanna be busy crossing different ballgame coating, the different ballgame, and it takes up. It consumes up too much of your time. You know, it takes away from that time of me actually being being a father. So what is on the current goal sheet? Really mostly your teeth, the mall just to make sure the kids that evolve there, and that's, that's my current one, make sure each of my kids achieve greatness and respective craft. How closely do you pay attention to the NFL right now? Pretty close. I mean, when when I do watch Marty now I don't watch. I, you know, I'm a dolphin fan. I'm from Miami, and I also support the mangled until you know, I'm I'm no longer here, but I watch games based on wide receiver in d. matchups only that's it. So as we one coming up, I'm excited to watch Mike Evans and Lattimore because the saints are playing Tampa Bay. And obviously, I mean, the old Dale and in Jada Ramsey matchup is gonna be phenomenal, phenomenal. That's how I watched week to week. That's so interesting. What is your dream DB wide receiver matchup as of right now with probably going to go in that. Oh, b. j. Jalen one is legit. Yeah, that's a good one. I maybe AB pets Peterson or Dale and Patrick Peterson, you know, I, I'm picking a corner that extremely agile and extremely fluid in his movement to me, that would be that would be. Similar to what Dion fan was. So I would pick Patrick Peterson, you know, against any of those top three, you know your Julio your your daily API. I mean, there are other great DV's out there. Yes, I just I like pets Peterson spousal play. Everybody has a different style, but PP is is my favorite. So anybody against him. You noted aby Hobie Jay and Julio separates any league wide receiver from good one. Oh, skill set. That's easy. It might. It's what three or four receivers on every team is detained. Right? And every team has a number one. What separates number one from the two and the number two from the three? Yes, gifts it we. All right. I was that developed that. Is that Kevin? That's DNA. He can't control the, hey, you know, I, that's all DNA. Then you were when you craft you hone your craft and understanding what you what you could what your good at and what you're not good at. You find one niche, whatever they need is you become great at it. That greatness that niche is was separate from everybody else. You gotta think about Floyd Mayweather it's a million bucks in the world what makes for so great. His defense, the best defense, if that hate you when he wants to, you know there's something about his game and makes them better than everybody else. That's DNA. There's some things just can't. Coach can't teach you born with it. Obviously, having. Put in the work as well. Would you think of Jalen Ramsey roasts in the holy? I love it. I love it. We need that. We as fans, we as media, we need it because I'm sure meeting you guys have to be tired of all the politically correct answers. You have to be tired of that. It's it's good to have bulletin board material for chains. It's good to have a villain for change and not everybody in a political robot. Give you know material to us is good to have somebody not saying all the right all the time. That's a boring even for media. It's good to have somebody shake the table every now and then it's okay. It is okay. And then they really didn't. That individual has to do is go out and back it up is still the game of football, come hell or high water, steal the game of Abol. All yes, doing just go out there and play. You were so good at shaking it up. You were so good at being an anti thority antagonistic Royce when you felt it was necessary. Why was that important for you to do that? Personally, I need the. Printer. I need the added crystal perform. We can. We got, you know, who writes, who makes a checklist with all the db names in that locker ahead of time. It's already hard enough to score. It's already hard enough to execute off. It's already hard enough to get open already hard enough to the capital. I need that extra Inada pressure to perform why? I don't know. I don't know. I, I liked it. I wanted to end. Yeah, yeah, I need it and I come no matter what you try to stop it. I was still going to get open who covered you better than anybody else. Nobody. Nobody. Might been passes. There might have been passed that we're incomplete, but I was never ever covered, never am. You can. You can go back and look at it decade or eleven years worth of film. I was never covered as might not have been the pleaded. The stat line might not have been would've should've, but I was never actually covered my when allow that they wouldn't allow my feet. No, they wouldn't allow this today. Disallow it my my feet. What the best ever explained to someone who doesn't know what that means, what that means route running my my my, my son is my quickness. My busy beat bumping run. My belief beat, double covers my belief there beat two men or in regards to what you put out there. I mean fan, you would have to go to YouTube and watch training view the understand the big graciousness and sweetness of the footwork to to get a gist. One of the things that is going to be a story in the NFL until it's. I mean for years it will be is cabinet. Uh-huh. Right. Yeah. Where where do you stay in on whether or not Colin? Kaepernick should be an NFL quarterback right now. I think I think should be, I think you should be. I love the message that he's trying to get across assuming that the owners don't want him using their platform because it misses across from a owner standpoint. I could probably see that, but I also understand why he's doing it. You know the reasons behind it. I think the message is self has his his got lost a little bit and the people forgetting why he's kneeling, isn't that nothing to do with the flag and just more so the social injustices, the police brutality, the killings going on and citing it is it's a, it's a touchy subject and and. It's just got into what has got to now. And I think I have a feeling I think cabinet, you're going to win his case with the collusion against the owners and the team because he should be on NFL Rosser period while you feel like he'll win, why my winning and I hate, I hate comparing player. They hate comparing people in and you know, I hate comparing stats and quarterbacks, you know, I mean, for what he's done, you know, previous is resume, you know, before nine of the Super Bowl, why wouldn't it be know experience a loan, and then being able to win games being able to contribute in general, you had this amazing way of playing with so much joy just described that joy because in my estimation, the world needs a little bit more kindness. Enjoy. Was it important for you? When I was little when I was a little kid growing up into the city, we went out there and played my outlet, my peace of mind away from all the killings way from all the drugs and everything going all the surrounding my outlet and peace and fun was out there in between the line on the green grass, and that that is when I was at my happiest back then. So all I did is once I made in NFL I took that same joy that same happiness without regardless if the rules because mice around regardless of how much I was making an play, the game, the exact same way without changing or conforming to how they felt I should've been, and that's all it was playing the game like a little kid, not business that it actually is. How does the business impact the joy you think about the business too much, then there's no joy in it, the game of football at all. 'cause that's all. It is. It's a business, whereas Levy on bail right now, that's business. You know, the joy is on the field, but then there's the business aspect of it that messes everything up. Hope not playing well, you gotta go your cut. Oh, we got injured, you know what? You can't use the more you're going. That's the business side. I didn't care about the in the side. I just wanted to get on the field and I'm gonna have some fun period. That's my joy. What do you make of some of these contracts? Aaron Rodgers got paid, Aaron, Donald gut, paid Khalil, max, getting paid. You know these, it's it's real money and it's real guaranteed money. What kind of does it signal in the league? Chad. Not just the market goes. It contains the goes up. I understand that money was real. I didn't spend it. I was cheapest Heo. Yeah. I mean it, it's cool, you know, and one thing, one thing about baseball, football, basketball, that will never deteriorate, that money will always continue to to go up and go up and go up. My son will be there one day and he's gonna have one of those crazy deals. You know, it's cool. I like it. What was the void for you when the game was gone? I didn't. I didn't have or need avoid because I was content once my time was up because I played the game or extremely long time my way I did it my way like just like Frank Sinatra saying when it wouldn't it did in. I was contending. I was at peace because I did as much as I think I could have, and I did it my way in tire time without changing without losing my sense of self. You sure. Did brother man look pre sheet your time so much taken too much of it, and thank you for your perspective, having amazing day and be blessed. Appreciates your boss. YouTube every thank you. Told you guys. It was fascinating. I could talk to that guy for an entire day. He has done so much. We didn't even get to touch on dancing with the stars lane. He's going to be mad at me. That's one thing she cares about. But what really stood out to me is without football on dead while it is a vehicle, it is a beacon. It is a path and an avenue to a better life, and it was so interesting to me to listen to Chad discuss that avenue. And again, as I said to you guys in the open, I had a very similar conversation with Antonio Brown with teddy Bridgewater with dalvin cook when I was down in liberty city at trash pal stadium, the stadium in which all of those young men played high school football and on which some of the greatest talent in the NFL plays. It plays host to four different high schools. And at any given moment, there are ten, twelve, fifteen, three, four, five star players on that feels the same time. And I appreciate Chad being so honest and so vulnerable to discuss it that way and same with Antonio teddy and valve and appreciate all those guys because it's a lie, look, it's an area. It's a life. It's an experience that guys like me just I can. I respect it so much, but I didn't live it and so to sit here and pretend like, oh yeah, no, we don't know. We all know what those guys went through. We don't know what those guys saw. We didn't live and so for them to have the vulnerability to share with us, what that challenge is like is appreciated. And again, it's it's a beacon in itself for young men going through that right now, those guys showing up and being visible, lays that road out for these young men who were trying to get out who were trying to build a better life for themselves and who want to use football as that vehicle. So thank you to Chad for. Or that Volna r- ability. It's appreciated. And another thing you heard Chad discussing, right? There's the imports of fatherhood and kind of wear. He is right now. Fatherhood can be interesting. Parenthood can be interesting. It can be the most wonderful thing in the world. I say to my friends who are new parents for the first time all the time, it is the most fulfilling most impossible job on the planet. Ladies and gentlemen. There's a cane example there of in this week's hillbilly hotline Rollet Travis words sames were just a way of life Roman candles. That's a redneck mortar launch. These is he'll billions. Jake crum Oman Brassica. I just been just listened thing to all your podcast, and I think they're actually Larry's. I do have a story to tell you it's not really redneck, but it'll probably make laugh. Couple of weekends ago, we were visiting my brother-in-law in Kansas City and my son, he's now free supposed to be taking nap and he called out for me said he had to go to use the restroom, Indies rescue. And so I told him, go in business comes out about five minutes later. He said he was done. I said, did you wash your hands? And you said, Yep, I said, did you your bottom? Yes, sir. Go back to bed couple minutes. Larry call that again. So I went in and see what he was doing. He said daddy, I saw pooping my bottom. I said, no, you don't. You're fine. Supposedly and proceeded to say y'all, wanna see, and he sticks his hand down his pants. He comes out of the finger full of who. So it's not such anything that's such things goes bathroom. I haven't up. So we walk into the bathroom. I look down and I say, what is that? He looks at me like, I'm an idiot and he says, it's poopie daddy. Key rolled unroll the toilet favor wife is bottom and then roll the backup. That's rednecks, but I think it's extremely frugal, which must be something that gets from his mother. Opio act over good story. Bathroom stuff. Bathroom stuff is always classic. That's good one. That's a good one. Seaman you gotta be careful. Here's the thing Laney always says, you gotta inspect man. You cannot assume you cannot sit there and think as a parent, you know what? Okay, I trust you on this, but I totally understand where he is because when you want them to nap when you want them to be asleep, you don't care about anything else but then being asleep. Oh, you got in your buns, fine. I don't care go to bed. Well, then it became a major hazard when when little man had poof fling and all over the room, Travis someday you're going to experience this son someday. Trust me, you're going to understand the humor in this rolling up poop and just just stashing it for later. Yeah. Luckily as an uncle, I haven't had to deal with this though. I once had a nephew. Tell me that he didn't know how to wipe. My brother gets home. I tell him something he goes. Yeah, he does. He's just messing with you. See they're smart to not only are they devious little creatures. They're smart to good call. I love it. Make sure you guys call. I want to hear your. I want to hear your thoughts. See they don't have to be redneck every I don't care where you're from. You know that story if you're a parent because every one of us dealt with at some point when when my youngest was maybe two, I don't know one and a half or two, something like that. I walked upstairs into the playroom in our old home and she was playing nothing but a diaper. And I looked down and there is a full blown mushroom cloud of PLO sticking out the back of this diaper and she just turned around and green that me and you are aghast in the moment, but somehow somehow and I don't know how later on in life that is cute. I don't don't ask how I don't know. Is there anything worse than blown out diver? It's pretty bad, man. I mean, it's pretty bad and you learn to deal with it and absolutely heinous and all of your inhibitions as a human being. When you are parent of a young child, they just don't exist. You don't care what you look like because you're never sleeping you don't. I mean, you act in ways. You cannot even imagine before you're a parent, you cannot even fathom it. And then as time progresses, you turn into your parents and that is a real problem. Suddenly something will come out of your mouth in an instructional way in a parental tone and you go my Lord dad, and it is a moment where you go, okay, do not become everything that you roll your eyes at, but you're on the precipice of that. And it's actually, I think, inevitable. If your parents did a halfway decent job, you turn into them, call us. Let us know your thoughts. Tell us your hilarious stories. I don't care what it's about. If it makes me laugh. I'm gain eight, six zero five one, six, thirteen fifteen. Travis on learning the number. You should be proud of me eight six zero five one, six one, three, one, five. One other thing that can make parenthood easier on all of you is bacon as a state at earlier in the show Smithfield is offering bacon for life with every pack of Smithfield bacon. A football Friday, Thursday last night, my goodness foot, my Thursday, basketball Friday, Magic Johnson coming up. Seven thirty nine thirty chance to sit with magic yesterday key. Yeah, he almost hire me. Yeah. Yes, you do. What oversee Luke Walton like a foreman. Make sure you don't screw it up. That's what he wanted to tell me. I said. Button, somebody didn't screw. It was Baker Mayfield. Good. Well, you may have a serious question kisha. How far did tyrod Taylor set us back? Talk to him and you wanna know what to do in Houston. Was that superintendent? Texas is very excitable. He was already around withdrawals. Yeah, he probably likes Baker duty. Did tyrod Taylor nice knowing ya. You know, he's never going to get back on the field short of injury. Not if you ask you. We'll here for a minute. It's time for publicity. You know, it was look. I wasn't here with you when we were going through the draft. I wasn't part of the show. At that point we were, we were analyzing. We were trying to figure out not only the show, but we are also trying to figure out what this show would look like in the future. Yeah, and we had you pinned down as a quiet pick. I would. I was late round sleeper. Yeah. We didn't want anybody to know. What a gym you could be here. Right, right. So let me ask, was there anybody on this show prior to my arrival that was all over Baker Mayfield. I would probably say Rosh was hyped by Roz more where hidden by where hairband like that boy complain. I told you, I tried to tell you think maybe Elsie I don't remember because Elsie would have lie all line. No, I didn't like him. I mean, I I knew actually I've met him we he worked out at my training facility out and. Okay, so I, I understand. I got it. I actually set in it, talked to him for several hours to prep him for the draft. This is not fake news not made up. This is not something that if you ask Baker Mayfield right now, if I did that, he'd say, yeah, yeah, he wouldn't say, oh, I don't remember. But even with that, I was like, coup, I do Raj. That was it for me when I looked at him play on playing the rose voice on play a lot during the regular season and that that he wasn't a Georgia beat him up. Yeah. And he look, he's a nice player at Oklahoma, but I'm thinking first pick overall. I don't know if you can draft a guy that's that's. Meet meet either, but I'll tell you what he was awesome last night. It wasn't just that they won for the first time since Christmas Eve of twenty six hundred and thirty five, six hundred and thirty five days. It wasn't just that the second stepped on the field. There was energy. The second he stepped on the field that never mind the people in the stands who clearly were energized by his presence, but the people on the field, his teammates were energized by his performance. The everything looked crisper faster, cleaner, everything about him translated to his very first appearance and only extraordinary. You know me I'm Debbie Downer Marino parade through a few balls behind guys, you know, but he didn't like tyrod. He didn't throw all his guy, his nose behind rod, four of fourteen for nineteen yards woops and yesterday in Keyshawn Johnson fashion. I decided to eat somebody's foot. Shove. Mouth. When I went on Stephen, a Smith show shortly after our show went off the air in Stephen and I were talking and he asked me about the Cleveland situation Baker Mayfield time. And I basically say Baker Mayfield it tyrod Taylor is the same quarterback is you know, well. Would've would've minute forty left in the first half. So I apologize may field as well as Stephen. But it just you could sense, like you said, any air something totally different teammates to you could just sense it? Yeah. All of a sudden. Joris Landry became Drovers Landry of the Miami Dolphins before he was just like, Jarvis Landry. That was it. He became the guy that they traded for big plays in a drive, lead a field goal. Tough catches down to the one yard line punch in a touchdown. He just was a different type of player. Baker Mayfield his first career completion to Jarvis. Landry Halloway goes out why the left three receivers here set of the right bakers, got two shots on his left hip tread or will snap it back. I attempt deals Scott Baker back Baker, looking Baker, low t. throws Landry gut it. He's at the forty five. He's at the forty eight yard line that Paul had a lot of mustard on that is exactly it right there. That courtesy of w k an art it had it had smoke on it. It was one of those throws he looked, ooh, okay. Okay. This is this is interesting and all of a sudden one throw news, career key, everybody in that stadium and on that field which just like, let's go this. Is different. This is new and one of the things I really liked about him when he got there and especially saw it on the field last night, it felt like at least from a distance watching from a distance that everyone else specially quarterbacks that had been drafted to Cleveland over the last seemingly ten or fifteen years. It was a damn. I gotta go to Cleveland, whereas with Mayfield he was excited to be there. He's excited something and it it translated ran into the field from the very first throw. I, it really did, and it was interesting as I tech somebody last night after the game. And I said, you were scared and he goes, yeah, with the other guy it. So I knew right then near just watching a game. I could tell that the particular person ticks did have the confidence in the other guy, just watching them run around. And then when Baker went into the game after game, wind of texted him and I'm like, yeah, he was scared. And he was like, yeah, and then our conversation obviously went on, but I won't share with you on air. It was just you could tell the difference. So the next thing we know rush, you know, Baker Mayfield he's one in, oh, he's got a beard. He'll be getting shaving commercial. Next we standing there with the shirt off some jeans rolled up. Demeer shaving. We got the underwear commercials, Baker Mayfield, you know, he's the next coming. He's already got like height. Machine is rolling. Gonna steal your thing a little bit where you're talking about over through some guys. I mean, he was growing overthrew eight. He wasn't as accurate as he's going to be a reason is because it's live bullets in a regular season game next game in the next game. After that, if you watch c. as a receiver, I watch a lot of different stuff when he throw the ball, it was a lot of twisting. Attorney was no run after catch really in. That's because he's new edit in once he gets in rhythm, the balls will be like handoffs opposed to pinpoint in guys having a twist and turn and get tackled at the same time seventeen to twenty three for two hundred in one yards. No touchdowns no interceptions a quarterback rating ninety four point. Nine sounds like how much of it key is just this is what he is and how and I'm not trying to throw cold water on it. But is there a little bit of a sense of lightning in a bottle that he came in and just had a great day and he's still going to go through the. Bumps and bruises, and because we saw Sam darnold last night. He sacked, he got sacked and fumbled. It was a sack fumble his offense. Alignment picked it up and run by that guy way. He got about twenty. Run the Cleveland Browns season. The office alignment. But I think when you look at it, it's not necessarily lightning in a bottle. What's going to happen here is they're gonna go back and watch the tape, and they're going to see some of the things that he did will and some of the things that he didn't do so well in, they're going to scrap the didn't do so wills the things that he did, what are going to try to continue to increase that formation wise, a row wise combination wise. They're going to say that him sales, okay, this is what he does. Well, so let's continue to ride this, but I think he, you know. The clock and his hand when he got sack holding the Baltimore, that's pretty common for young quarterback. It's not even that it's first time, especially, yeah, as time goes on, he probably will get a sense that this dude is chasing me now for the backside get rid of ball. Here's the silliest. In most obvious in you knew this was coming the question about whether or not Baker Mayfield is going to be the star from this point forward. Here's Hugh Jackson, I just I like to watch the tape. Obviously, Baker this great things. I mean, again, we don't play until Sunday. We got some days. Let's not get into those debates tonight in Oslo what he did tonight was outstanding for the football team force teammates and just the way he competed. But again, I have to watch the tape and then we'll go from there. I get Jackson is a head coach, and he's going to sound like one and talk like one, but the debate about tyrod Taylor and Baker, there is no debate on who the quarterback of this team is. Now for for anyone that for imagine running tyrod Taylor back out there. Next coach did. Coach, did they go back and watch the tape and you'll see what he did, what he did, and I never heard that 'cause I was sleep by the time. He. Okay. Key question for you. If tyrod Taylor doesn't get hurt, t t t t doesn't go down. They got pills for that. Does Baker? Yes. Getting on the field last night. One hundred percent LA? Okay. If t t stays the same into the third quarter four fourteen if he stays the same into the third quarter, I promise you, okay, Baker may feel was warming up for four what Assad at halftime to win this Reagan's fired. No, that's what they went. Told Hugh. The coaches staff would win told Hugh and little huddle is he, we gotta go with the guy, man, what's wrong with you wake up and he would say, yeah, you're right, you're right. We're going to go the other friend of the show, Hugh Jackson coach me in high school. So you know, it's what he's like. See an executive Pepsi one date. So when he was recruited me at ASU when I was in juke. Oh, he. So he coached anyone ASU. Right. He's recruiting me. He goes. I would. I was running from him because I didn't wanna talk to a issue 'cause I knew all these coaches. So he comes in the locker Rupe. He's looking for Beagles. I don't know why you're running for me. Let you sit your ass now you're not going to disrespect me old me more than. I was like. Top ten. It was the funniest thing. Really liked that voice. It's hard for me to explain how much I like that voice, Magic Johnson. You got a chance to sit down with the after his press conference, and one of the things in the press he was talking about Lonzo in. He is big on Lonzo coming into this season. We'll get into it next, it's the morning show. Keyshawn l, z and Travis has away feel. Bad me to sleep. Day, how big steak who are, is it him on in his no good for the all feel. It sounds like bar steakhouse somewhere. Right? All Brown with a bat panel. Dark too. Dark dark, yeah. Yeah. Red booths reading booth. Never played us again. I like it. Never. I like why? What's because you look like you're still in the bar baby. What's wrong with this? I won't early in the morning. Never do it again. Thank you. All right. So you went down of Silla yesterday. Got hit with magic places. Amazing. I have. It's amazing if the Lakers championship just based on a facility. I mean, did did you get tour the whole? Did you go through the whole thing that I didn't go through the whole thing, but I saw the see the play, allowing ear in interior portion of the stadium. Yeah, I mean the gym, and then I saw the sweets up top for the executives. What do you call it? The the. What do you call it? The south bay league Lakers. A. g. whatever you g. league? Yeah, I saw that portion. Chris was there had me there for three hours early better. It was fun and got a chance to sit there for three hours to be prepared better to be within late. He wanted to make sure we were not on time on the Travis program has not even the sweet tea. You're on the Travis program getting somewhere in our early. He figured me Elsie would be late. Wanted to get there early along with Amanda, but it was fun. It was good. It was. It was interesting hearing rob hearing magic speak gave you a lot of energy, at least it did for me that the Lakers are certainly looking bright in toward the future. Yeah. No. I mean, the enthusiasm and the energy is a as high of a pitch is it's been in years in USA since really, probably seven or eight years when there were legitimate championship team that LeBron's here, the young players that they have here. And quite honestly, the fact that magic in rob Pelinka the ones that are calling the shots and magic was talking yesterday and among other things that he was talking about was that Lonzo ball, and he said that he's ready for a breakout season after tweaking his shot, and he talked about how you know the Lakers didn't say you need to fix your shot. They said that Lonzo was the one that wanted to get in the gym. Lonzo was the one that wanted to work on and prove the percentages and all these sorts of things. And. Regardless of whose idea was it's, it's a good one, whether it was Lonzo or magic or rob or saying, hey, let's work on this Lonzo needed to address that and that he did and that it looks better than look smoother. It looks a little more orthodox. That's great news and thing is coming away from the press conference. You know, it's not a knock on Mitch Cup check, but it is in nocco, Mitch, Cup check. I don't know that I could set to oppress Kaz for actually Rogers. You know this, this was the first press conference I've ever been to outside of me thought of behind the my being behind the might have a, you have a notepad and a little Clark actually says. Right? I try to hide all six, five of me of six. Four. I was trying to hide. I was trying to hide. I'm like, hey, man, let me go upstairs. So I don't want to be around these people. I was just like, I don't want to just felt like Travis. They just felt like drivers, Sheila shot at a press conference room and you see kisha sitting there. But to note Pat, I saw him on the balcony. Unite. You're not mingling with the people. I did not want to be with handed chemists, Brian Eski. All dues bites your sales that look like. He's happy at a press conference with a no question. That was a not for me right sitting there going. No. Put me up top where have to talk for forty five minutes about nothing. We will hear your conversation with with magic coming up at seven thirty and at nine thirty. So a couple of different chances to get to hear that in Suissa great about that. They'll Travis is listening to magic. Those is said about Mitch Cup check. I just felt like listening to hit press conference in for sitting from the sweets. You just felt good. It was just weird. It was like, you know what I'm saying? Like you just felt good man. You felt like, oh, Lakers they rolling. He sold it to me. I'm buying hook, line and sinker. They got floor seats available while bottom. You know what? It is key. I, it's not dissimilar what we were talking about a minute ago with energy with Baker may. Baker Mayfield comes in and there's energy and there's enthusiasm, and there's maybe more than both of those things. There's belief, there's belief in what's about in with me. I don't know if there's anybody that's able to translate their own enthusiasm, their own energy into the belief and other people the way that Magic Johnson able, if magic is invested in something, if magic saying that something's going to work, people believe it and, and it's from the moment. He got there from the moment. He got there in the middle of the season. Two years ago, there was energy, there was belief and now you're finally starting to see the fruit. The results of all of the work that he's done LeBron is here lonzo's tweaked his shot that magic and sit at that press conference and. Sell it and it's real. No, it is in it. It was it. You know, I just thought that some of the things that he was saying as you say, before I spoke with him, we're gonna play that at seven thirty. And then again at nine thirty of for the listeners to get an opportunity to hear Magic Johnson, basically in a one on one interview with me and just it was it was fun. Being able to sit down and talk to him and talk to him about basketball in understanding how they wanted to build the Lakers what it is that they want it to do to make the Lakers great team. Again, it just it's just one of those things men. When you walk in that building is you just felt championship not maybe this year, but at some point in the near short term, full Siebel future, whatever that means, do you think that Lonzo is ready for a breakout season because to me, listening to what he was saying, reading what he was saying. It felt a little bit sales many in the sense that we. We've talked about everybody the LeBron we've talked about coups we've talked about Ingram, everybody got on Josh heart for a few weeks because he tore up the summer Li. It's been all of these guys. We talked about all the guys that come in Rondo and Stevenson in jail, Mckee and Michael Beasley. We spend all this time talking about everybody and really not Lonzo, and it felt a little bit like, hey, don't forget about the guy that we just pick number two overall. He's still a big deal. He's still a big part of this. It felt like a little bit of a pep rally for Lonzo to, we'll see, not for me in my wants it now with him, it wasn't that way. He, he, I thought he was honest about Lonzo in what he saw in where he believes Lonzo is in terms of moving forward, it didn't feel like that at all really didn't. He did not over praise him. He did not underselling. You think that the breakout is coming. What's break, what's a breakout? That's the quite the breakout set that the breakout is. Does he go to the hoop more? And when does he when he goes, does he finish? Does the free throw percentage get somewhere out of the forties and way north of that? Does the three point percentage get higher than barely above thirty? Does he become something other than a guy that you don't have to guard? He looked the numbers, ten, seven, seven, great numbers you do. You need to guard it? I'm assuming you didn't hear the end of, you know, not to Sam, Houston come in early in here. That is a correct assumption. So we'll get about not gonna. I'm not going to answer that for you. Allow you to sit around seven thirty. Yeah, in listen to Matt. Stuff to do for the next hour. You know, I want you to listen to what Magic Johnson really had to say about Lonzo high understand we said at the press conference. But what he said with me is a little bit different in what he said, which might Wallace on the guy where you like grilling him? No, it's just that you know, just athletes athletes, you kind of have a different conversation is just as what it is. I keep trying to tell you that we speak a different language. You know, what's the language? It's truthful. It is what it is when you have front of oppressor you, you know, you give them a little twenty million guys with their no pets guys. Near waiting, hit a a cold, hot dog, a cold hot dog, and some warm soda. He was depressed pox the cold out of soda. You don't seem like you're that excited about a member of a member of the media. Walked. I walked in yesterday as Chris in Amanda sit there curbside waiting on me and l z. I had no press pass. None zero. Escorted. Probably more than one list. I we'll stick with this. We'll talk about a breakout season for Llandough Alonzo Inwood. Magic also said about Luke Walton and whether or not he needs to get off to a good start that's coming up next. Don't don't. Don't don't. Don't. Don't. Don't. Don't. Don't don't. Don't. Don't don't. So Lonzo may or may not have a breakout season. You will hear your conversation with magic that's coming up at seven thirty cities. Very matter of fact wasn't overselling wasn't under promising. No, just Mary real Magic Johnson telling it like it is. You know when a guy like that sees a player that he's drafted. He knows what it is. He understands. Yeah, I, there's a little bit hesitation me and that because there are a lot of really good players that have turned into executives that Michael Jordan's not very good at it. Michael Jordan player different. How so? Because I think Michael's ego it knowing Michael been around Michael as a young player, New York City in Tampa Bay, and being able to just sit down with Mike at times and joke would even have fun with him. I think it's a different type of executive. I think Michael is more about his eagle in turning off players. His knowledge, basketball obviously is high, but. A lot of players that he's. Going after in terms of the draft, they've been less than him. Everybody's less than him. Yeah, but I mean less, you know, magic, go after a player or two this deficit. They're going like less than him, but not feeling threatened in the process. He's not afraid to. Gotcha. Young superstar. Well, I felt like I feel like MJ is like, man, I know he could play. That's cool, but I'm not trying to get to. Lonzo ball. I'm not trying to get to Foltz Tate. I'm just I'm cool with being where we're at. I, it's weird because Michael Jordan, I think still for most people, I'm on the LeBron side of this equation. But for most people, Michael Jordan is still the greatest player of all time. Yeah, it's interesting because it seems like an an correct me if I'm wrong, but if I'm if I'm hearing you right, it seems like when Michael was picking and Michael's evaluating Michael's deciding what it is he wants to do with his team, like he's almost threatened by by challenges to his greatness where, whereas Magic's completely comfortable in what it is that he's done in mass completely comfortable in his accomplishments in his place in Laker history. Yeah, championships that he won and whether it's drafting Lonzo, Brandon Ingram or anybody, he's not threatened by anybody that's coming in. He just wants everybody to have successes. MJ is not threatened by anybody coming in either because obviously he's one of the top three player that ever fade sure you know every his. World, it played basketball. There's no question about it, but I just think his his thought process is such that it's like. You know, I'm not gonna chase do. Yeah, you know, free agency. You sit there and you go, will free agency comes, you would think a little too cool for school. Thanks, Charlotte. Charlotte is going to be able to attract one of the big free agents. Right? Because it's Michael Jordan? Yeah, but that's a role like town. He's doing why not hustling j. j. made up talk. Your with me, you roll it with me, not. You find MJ magical hustle, magic magic. Let's go. That's what I'm saying. I get that. And the idea of Lonzo having a breakout season and hopefully it is nothing more than his evaluation of what it is and maybe maybe it is we'll find out. I wonder though if there wasn't some sense of Lonzo this off-season in Lonzo having a knee procedure and Lonzo missing as much time as did last year and Lonzo look fairly or unfairly. Lonzo got passed by a bunch of guys in that Laker. Situation in the sense that the guys that we talked about, obviously LeBron goes straight to the top of the list Kouzmouk past Lonzo, Josh Hart, at least close the gap on Lonzo. Brandon Ingram probably jumped back ahead of Lonzo again. And I wonder if this idea of him having a breakout season isn't something like, hey, let's not forget about Lonzo. He's an important piece of this. There's a little bit of ego stroke that goes in this. I think when when breakout season. Could be a lot of different things. Breakout season can be. He's improved his shooting, percentage, breakout, breakout, seizing may be. He's playing better. Defense, breakout season can be. He is. Take in the passing game any Volva to a whole 'nother level. It just depends on what he defines. His breakout season breakout season doesn't mean twenty and ten, twelve sure all the time. I think we'll break breakout season means especially coming from someone like magic is you are playing the number two pick. Yes, in our numbers as just like the impact is like a breakout season, you could say Tatum already had his Celtics. Yes. If you listen to my interview at seven thirty here in said about Lonzo tell you another piece of it could be he could break out season for him is he could be on the floor, important minutes, important games xactly that that could be breakouts. Absolutely. Because it feels like Rondos going to be that guy at today's. We sit here what today? September twenty. First. If you had to close your eyes and visualize the five guys on the court at the end of a close game, I don't think lonzo's out there, but maybe by the time we get into September November December, he's worked his way back. Talked to Irvin Magic Johnson in my exclusive interview right here on ESPN seventeen in the morning show. No. He talked about Rondo in one of the things that he did say about Rondo you here at seven thirty which is again a nine thirty in again at nine thirty. Which is interesting because he brought Rondo up. I didn't mention Rondo. He brought Rondo upside. I sit there and I was like, okay, and I just let him go, let him be magic. And it was interesting to hear what he had to say about building a roster, building the team in how they arrive to the point of building this roster and building the team of all the guys. They went out and got this off season. Hey, gopher other than LeBron obviously Rhonda was the best pick on is going to be an important part of what they did this year God. Yeah. I mean, magical, explain it to you at seven thirty and nine thirty. Magic also said yesterday, talking about Luke Walton because one of the questions that we've all been talking about is how quickly does it start? We saw when the Bronwyn to Miami got off to a slow start. I think there are eight nine to the first seventeen games when LeBron came back to Cleveland, it took a minute for that to come together. And of course, in all both of these situations, they ended up going to the finals in both of those years, but he doesn't have those sorts of players here at least we don't think so yet in the question about whether or not the Lakers get off to a slow start, what happens with Luke Walton because we remember LeBron and Erik Spoelstra at the beginning, we're not on the same page. The story goes, it LeBron went to Pat Ryan said, hey, I'm not feeling this and Riley, get back down there. He's the guy. Well, I sensed in just having a a. Conversation with the great one that Luke Walton is. Okay. I since that that he'll be okay because one, he played anyone in that respect level. Even though he was a a contributor voice, Larry start woke row. I I like to use contributor because role player just sounds weak. I certainly didn't mean it like that. No, I know. I'm just saying I contributed contributor. Yeah. Certainly contributor mad it talking to magic. It just felt like LeBron was okay with him as a coach because he respected him as a contributor on championship teams. So that's kind of, you know, the way I felt, you know what key, I don't know what's going on, but the more and more that you think about what's going on with Luke Walton. I just I'm I'm excited about it and I'm excited that magic said what he said about how he doesn't necessarily have to get off to a good start that he's going to be fine one way or the other. Because as I was talking to Luke, we said, don't worry if we get off to a bad start. That's what magic said. We have seen that with LeBron go to Miami. We've seen that when he came back to Cleveland, he's going to struggle because they're so many new moving parts, but eventually we're going to get. We're going to be a really, really good team. Trouble in the streets. Man. It's a two car crash blocking the right lane on six. Oh five. That is the thing. Abra freeway. Some you from Los Avezzano north at Rosehill roll back up to severally boulevard, say, you know, little congested effectively probably twenty minutes, twenty minutes Rosemead boulevard over if you wanna get into downtown Eric. Most of our listeners are coming from that side in the downtown LA as you know or they're coming from northern or the I eat member to kilt coming from the i. e. a lot of our listeners travel to six, five, zero five. They go from ten five ninety one. Those are all freeways here. Here. Again, it's a two car crash, blocking the right lane. Thank April freeway, which is six. Oh fun. You gotta know that the job. Touching me. Helicopters getting crowded. Oh, man. No, I together no one's ever been in ice that move rose, meet before road, rose, Hill's roll back up to Everley boulevard. You're right. Yes, that we're burned his head up magic. You mean. Poisoned your brain right. Joel concert where he let himself on fire. Yeah, because it was at the Shrine Auditorium, I remember. Yeah. And we were little kids in. They needed to seat fillers or whatever. So they came into the neighborhoods and stuff like that. And did you think it was part of the show or did you know? I had no idea. Yeah. Just was just there enjoying myself as a kid. Michael's Alfa l. a. little do Ana, figure it out in my forty seven years old call to the fines. Oh, his birthday brought to you by Jaguar, Land Rover, Newport Beach off the seventy three towards the seat caught in Saguenay Hilton funds. That's like a hybrid, whatever may visit Land Rover, Newport, beats banks, Alphonso repairable. I don't wanna see what you're going to do to fill when it's his birthday when it comes around again, check. He did very very, and it was reincarnated as Michael Collins golf. Yeah, yeah, that's not. That's not bad. Got it's trying to figure it out. Key clay Hilton clay Helton has. I would argue the biggest game that he's had to coach in a very long time, biggest game of his coaching career. It very well might be is one into with bad losses to Stanford in Texas, coming off of a season where the other teams that he played Notre Dame, Alabama and so on. So they just Ojo state, just put it on him. And now he's looking at a Friday night. Then Friday night games are weird. They start late your little bit out of your rhythm because it's a Friday and not a Saturdays, college football player, and you got a freshman quarterback who hasn't looked great. So far you've got a running game. That's non existent. You got pressure on your offense coordinator and you've got a team in Washington state coming in three now and played anybody. But Mike Leach is one of those because he's gonna find a way to score points. The interesting thing about Friday night is JT days. Used to plan on Friday. So his body his clock and hope. Mine hopefully will be, oh, it's Friday night. Interesting thing about. This whole episode is going on in I, the Coliseum is if clay Hilton does not win football game, and I just remembered that watch the state beat us last year. We can't lose the Washington state twice. Shouldn't lose to Washington state twice in a decade, much less twice in a row. It just we can't do that that that would be embarrassing. You know, it's embarrassing, but I feel much much felt last week they have to know the sense of urgency as a coaching staff in a football team. The how important it's going to be to win this football game to get off to a fast start to get Stephen to touches that he needs to make sure that the football is being distributed across the board, not to one guy, Ross Perot not to one guy. You have to get it to everybody. You don't have, you know, in, they have to know these things t Martin has to know that he's going to get five. Why? Why does he know now when he didn't know last week or the week before or last season or because you're right. But my question keeps coming back to this beating wash. States should not be a moment is sale at exhale. It is all right, we're, but it. But it shouldn't be. You know, this better than its US USC beating Washington state should never be who, okay, we're, we're, we're okay. We're back on solid ground. This should be. This should be a defacto by for US. That's where we are. Now. That's the scary part. That's where we. We are right now. We can beat our chests. We can play arrogant. We can be foolish if we choose to do so Washington state Cougars now walk into Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, is that what is still called feeling like Washington state from thirty years ago, it's not doesn't work like that anymore. They feel like USC is sorry, and we getting ready to kick him right near rear. That's what they feel. The reason it doesn't work like that anymore. Nothing to do with Washington state has everything to do with USC, and that's why I think the clay Helton t Martin era is so alarming because it's not that Washington look every once in a while, a program that used to be not very good, get organs. Perfect sample Oregon for thirty years was blowzy. They were never a good team. They'd have a good quarterback once in a while, but they want a team that you really sweat. And then all of a sudden they got the program most because Phil Knight started throw crazy money at it. They started to get better players and the program became a team that competed for national championships. And now. Oregon is a football program that's legit. No, it is Washington state that didn't happen there. SE came back to the pack more than anybody went and got him and UC playing Washington state in a must win game. It doesn't even add up in my brain, and it is. You're right one in three how their sale just like you said one and two. It's like, Ooh, I like one in three at one of you still want to the game. I mean, like seriously as a season ticket holder or you still going to used to walking around with show USC sweatshirt. Oh, fight. All. Yeah, you still screaming at because I won't be a promise you want you will for the big games, right? Like no, will be able to do it. MAC. UCLA SE tickets away yesterday, to be honest with you showed the Rose Bowl him away. I'm not going to be update UCLA sorry. And so are we can't. I can't. I can't even. I can't. I can't do that. I'm not even gonna go to the game tonight just because I, I'm not going to be able to do you have to be able to do. You have to ask yourself if you're in ministry at SE. If you're a fan of SE if you're a booster SE what are we right now? What are we USC the way that when when I think of your Trojans, when I think of the Trojans that I kid where they don't want emit heat Carol, they went USC. You saw that uniform come out of the tunnel and you knew you were about him. We're barest and we don't want a minute because we are SE and we're again, and we feel we, you know, we do what we wanna do, how we wanna do it and it's not like that anymore. No, it college football. It was not that long ago in college football USC in in. Beja programs, coaches, Rockstars. Not a guy if you know they just right. Okay, is getting work out? No, no, they're rockstar, yes. The coordinators or Rockstars. They're looking to become head coaches in a year two. That's what that's what the coordinators looking to become head coaches in a year to even he loses a coordinator every year to another type of job. He had an eyelash. The office coordinator common NFL team because he just says, well, Tosh the coordinate Alabama. He'll be a head coach, two years, guaranteed. Kirby smart, same type of we can't how come we couldn't go get Kirby smart, right? That's what you're saying. How come we couldn't come because it was overly cautious that the reason, because the guy at Clemson Brent Venables sangam assistant, the defense, the defense coordinator at Clemson has Brent Venables believe I'm saying his name, right? That's the type of guy that you need to go get. If you're looking to do somewhat head, coach, you need to go get up day, were debt do. They were gun shy because they went from kiffin to Sark and it was just had been bad because he fire kiffin on the runway. And then Sark has his problems that he goes through what he goes through. You got to blow him out because it's embarrassing university. So it's almost one of those look. I can't have another situation. I just need somebody that's not gonna put me in an embarrassing situation. Somebody that can I can put him on TV. I can put them in front of boosters, can put them in front of the kids, and I can put him in front of parents and everybody's gonna feel good about it because he's a good guy, but that has to stop that. I couldn't agree more is whole notion of you. Gotta have a west coast coach coach your team that that's that's a bunch of nothing. Oh, we gotta get a west coast guy. One of our guys coach the team, no man, you go get anybody. Would you not get Lincoln Riley right league around find one of those guys. I'm not saying this rush. Is this the segment for someone to run down gotta, say a baby people awaiting Sean will talk about the NFL. No, no, no keys not going to pull back the pig skin. Maybe he will. It's coming up next.

The Sedano Show [Hr 3]
Yes, sir. Donald show continues on ESPN LA, and my friend. Byron Scott is in the house three time champion for your Los Angeles, Lakers and Byron your former teammate is created storm today. You know, George is always good to be with you in a heard about this storm. And I didn't hear exactly what urban said, right? I did hear Luke's reaction to it. So I'm I'm curious to hear what urban had to say about the whole situation before I can react on him. Okay. No is pretty pretty serious. Okay. Well, luckily, we have whoa. Ges audio. Whoa. Jews on sportscenter. Whoa. Jazz. Brian win horse called him. He's like the thirty first franchise. He knows everything. That's a good name. So here's what the thirty. First franchise said on sportscenter today about this situation. Well, they were coming off the back. The back losses to Minnesota. San Antonio on the road trip the day before the Dallas win and Johnson was very serious in his tone to Luke Walton about what he has seen shortcomings with this team with loops coaching decisions. He's made and it certainly a change in tone from even back in September. Where Magic Johnson management has said we're gonna let this play out. It's going to take time. It always takes time. It's shown LeBron James in a new with a new team lots of young players lots of free agents coming in and the message around that lake organization this week in around that coaching staff is been this coaching staff better win sooner than later. And remember Magic Johnson didn't hire Luke Walton. Jeanie Buss was a big part of. Hiring Luke Walton she is remains a may significant advocate for him. But LeBron James changes expectations, and they expect winning now. So that was just description of the events and Luke was asked. I mean, Bill Oruma the Atlantic props to him he straight up basically asked him, you think keeping your job you feel like management is going to give you the latitude to be patient. Feel like I have a great relationship management. Do you feel like you have job security? I feel like down here too. I don't I don't feel like I'm going into. So they have it buyer. And that's basically catching you up on everything. Yeah. You just did you you cut me up on everything. And you know, the one thing George, you know, and I know, and I know especially well Irvin. Magic Johnson doesn't do idle threats. He is a man that's going to confront you assay. Exactly. What's on his mind? I still think he's gonna give this team and this coaching staff some latitude in this situation. But I think he's also drawn to say to Luke in the coaching staff as well as the players that listen, there has to be a sense of urgency here you have to start winning some basketball games, we are in Western Conference. We're not in Eastern Conference where you can just make it up in a tin game span. But I think he's putting those guys on notice. And that's just Irving Magic Johnson. He's used to winning right? And he used to win on the basketball court. He's used to win in the business office. That's just him. And so I think these guys shouldn't take this lightly. Yeah. First of all that. That's that's being said, you know, what I'm saying that about. Luke and the staff and the players as well, don't take this lightly. This man is serious and he wants them results. And he's putting pretty much everybody on notice. I just think the guys gotta understand listen, we gotta play with a lot more sense of urgency. Not saying that they haven't been playing hard because I've watched these games they've been in everyone. Everyone of that. I think the Lakers are playing hard outland tough. Good basketball. They've been like you said every game. I think the game it probably irked magic. Probably the most was the Minnesota lost. You know, because we all expected them to come out and say, hey, we gotta go at this team right away from the get-go and don't let this be a game early. And then boom all of a sudden it was in Minnesota end up getting win. I think that game probably irked him more than anything you. And I were on the air on Monday. We did the pre-game out and chino and NT was on with us. And and right that was it. We we were saying that that team was real in a little bit, correct? And because of that you need to kinda get on them. And. Yeah that game gotta lot closer and Jimmy Butler you let Jimmy Butler basically take over in that situation. But here's the thing. We've talked about this. We talked about it on Monday about the roster. This is a bit of a not a bit. This is a flawed roster. You have a combination of young guys who don't know what they're made of just yet you see potential and flashes. And then you got a bunch of guys who were on one year deals who, you know, some guys have performed well in the past, and and you know, had some moments other guys are, you know, they're just kind of NBA guys who you can have veteran guys we're on a roster and he got LeBron. So it's not necessarily a perfect combination. As far as the roster construction. You forgot to mention that you know, you don't have the type of threats on the offense event as far as three point shooter concern. So that outside shooting is a flaw. You don't have that defensive stopper, which is kind of a flaw of this team. We talked about that's going to take time as well. So. Yeah. From getting of the season, we knew this team was put together it was gonna take some take some times, and they had some flaws the outside shooting was what everybody was talking about. You know when our author was put. Together and shooting hasn't been as bad action that it's fine. It hasn't been bad at all honest with three point shooting has gone up obviously from game one to now had nowhere to go up after the first first. Nowhere to go. But it's gotten better and brighter. I think the defense is going to be a problem as I've been saying from day one. Yes, it'll be a problem. That's going to be a work in progress. You gotta get these guys plan on the string and that hasn't happened. But it's gotten a little bit better. And that's gonna take some time. So we knew from the beginning of the season that this was good flaw roster. And it was gonna take these guys some time on the defensive to get it together. Offense is always a lot quicker. You had a bunch of guys on one year deal. So you would expect those guys on when you deal to come out and play like gangbusters because they're looking for another deal next year either here or somewhere else? So it's just a lot of questions. But again, I think for the first eight games these guys have played heart. They've been in every game. They've had a chance to win two or three of those games. But I thought the Minnesota loss was a bad loss. Yeah. It look everyone who's been around magic. Clearly today. People have said it Ramona was on when Mason I alert or talking about he can be impulsive. And you know, and I know that you played with the man. You know? So I think that that's it. The Minnesota game might have set him off. And he just that's it. And he's just gonna go at it. And he's going to have the conversation is going to be a stern fashion that conversation. But man, I mean, he was just breaching basis just a couple of weeks ago by you can't let that get to you like that. No again, like you said, you know, that game probably was the game that just kind of set him off. And I and I think after he has a chance to just kinda sit back and understand. And maybe he's already done this where you can just sit back and say, you know, what? I made some some statements in says some things to Luke about the coaching staff as well. As the players we have to start winning. Didn't mean it maybe in that tone. I still believe that we have the right ingredients to be a very good team this year, it'd be a playoff team be you know, I said from day one that I thought from forty eight to fifty two fifty three wins is is very doable this team and still to this still very doable. Like you said. So I don't think there's time right now where we should be hitting the panic button and has not only fans, but you know, management and players and everybody else right now Ryan is in LA Ryan, what do you got for us? Hey, I got three points. If there enough time for me to talk about three palmar number one point would be the front office. They're not gonna admit it. But I believe that they're seriously in the work of not paying that. They're gonna make lukewarm the scapegoat. But basically, they're not. Going to some of the moves that they made besides the avail McGee. And last Iverson acquisitions, I feel as Michael Beasley, which doesn't get any minute. Or the way Arado is basically a watch between him alive though. They're basically thank player, but Lonzo flight me better. And we'll be better overall over time that second point I wanna make a lack of a backup center. Basically I watched every Laker game problem fan for for years now. And especially if they got the broad I watch it every single game. And I noticed that whenever you're veil mcgee's comes out the game. They're saner are eaten up because we have no backup the game with Hannah Tonio first time they played. Twenty oh, rain fame plate with Audrey where they got him the ball. He post up. I didn't even know. Listen Aldridge before you get to your third point Aldridge was sad to see go away. He picked up five thousand four minutes of play. And all like, no, don't go. Game. Yeah. What's your point? Third point would be. Why are you are myth? Why not get him? I feel like you mentioned. There are. No if you mentioned it yesterday. Yeah. Okay. Pope where did he know right now nothing is -actly day off me of what happened to damage. I don't know if that's the right name that play with him in Miami. When Lamar Miami following Cleveland make they are, you know, James James Jones. He's actually the GM in Phoenix now. So he's not he's not going to be available. But no look to your point the problem with JR Smith is this Byron in theory. It makes sense, right? Because even the salaries are close enough you can make that a one for one deal if you really wanted to. But the problem with JR's deal is that the second year, which has a guarantee of three point eight million dollars, even if you waive him and that cuts into their salary cap space. So that's not something they want they want to preserve that. So that's the other part of the equation. We can kinda touch on that on the other side. And we'll take more your calls, folks. If you'd like it was sprinkle the minute. Eight seven seven seven ten ESPN that part of the equation makes this more difficult because. Because even if you wanna make changes, right? You have limited the options for yourself to guys who don't have money on the books next year. Which makes again the lot of guys you can pick from a lot smaller. Eight seven seven seven ten ESPN. Byron is in the house. We're gonna hang out you tweet us as well at Sodano ESPN follow Byron on Twitter as well. Fischel B Scott is where you find look we got some stuff standing Gundy had some great comments yesterday. Stephen had some comments about this whole, Luke Walton thing even always got listened. It was on fire Boito, but he always got comedy. He was on fire. You don't wanna hear what Stephen said and give you a preview stuff. That's what Stephen Byron Scott hanging out with us here on the show on ESPN LA by we were just talking about. You know, the gentleman who called earlier it's kind of breaking it down. And you thought he made to good points. Absolutely. I thought that what are you talking about with the the roster and everything management? The one thing managed to manage could do obviously would would be is at anytime. They can let him go. Right. But you made a great point as far as he has to understand. They want to keep all the flexibility that they have in the salary cap for next year. They wanna be able to have enough money to sign another big time player. So magic in rob have done a great job of getting all these aspiring contracts for next year. So they have all this money under the cap again about thirty eight thirty nine million, right? So yes, understand that. And number two. He he's right. When Djamil McGee goes out the game, they are very small basketball team. And you know, it is just is great as LeBron James as we all know, he can probably play all five positions. But it's probably not in your best interest that he's playing on five position. Right. Every single night. He shouldn't be playing backup center. Yeah. Kouzmin is just to light and to to inexperience at that position to play the backup center. So when javale goes out there, they're getting hammered. You're right now. So the only way you can solve that situations by bringing in another backups. Center, but I agree with you may two very good points. But again, you gotta understand management. You know, this is this is actually what they want right now did exactly what they wanted to do over the summer. They kept I flip flexibility, you know, for next year, which is very important because we know there are some free agents next year too big time named that could possibly LAN here in LA along with LeBron James that can take us to a different level for the next year. You know, so keeping that flexibility is important for magic and rob. And they know that and I think we all know that as well because we know that this is a process this is a two or three year process. And you got the first year under your belt when you got LeBron James now, you just play it out. And then boom you start getting that second year under your belt. So one of the callers before you came in was talking about a lot of people have been tweeting me this too about Nick vuckovich who plays for Landau. And he's an expiring thirteen million whatever. Yes, he's not the type of player you want on this team. Not the way they wanna play basketball. He's a he can shoot a little bit. But he's back to the basket in the. Post area like good offensive player bad player that you play the kid from Michigan Viner right now. He like you said if you're talking about an offense being he's pretty good in the post like you say can shoot it from about seventeen feet, expiring contracts, all those positives. But on the defensive in and the way that they've been playing up and down. He's not going to run up and down like that. No, no. That's not his style. He's a he's a half court type center. So I agree with you. I at the end of the day. I would just get a rook some some plan time at that position. And if you're going to bring in a guy to play the backup center, the guy that you should be targeting is the guy in Chicago, Robin. Lopez now, Robin Lopez is a defensive minded he's the opposite of his brother. Basically, don't you know, Brooke is decent defender. He's not terrible. You know what I mean? Like the body in the way, a good word now hardnosed defender. Yes. He he doesn't have the offensive skills that Brooke has he's a good screen setter. He's going to defend the rim. He's going to rebound. He's gonna take charges. All. All that stuff. Like, he's gonna do the dirty work. Right. And he would fit in perfect expiring guy to buy contract as well. But with the offense of team that we have out there. I mean, we're second and third and league in scoring. We don't need another score. Right. We're one of the worst teams in league is as far as giving up points. So you need somebody can come in. It can do some of the things that debate does on defense van which is protect the room. Block shots Robin doesn't necessarily block a ton of shots. But he takes charges. Yeah. You know? So again, you get more possession. So he would be a guy in a perfect world. He would be a good good to have perfect backup center. I think you can interchange him in jail. They do a little different things. Exactly. But it's good varying varying the the attack they're potentially with those two guys and things that they do are like you said, they're not similar, but they're both affective. So we had David minimum in on who broke the story earlier. And I asked him straight up like look man are they gonna make a move after December fifteenth because that's when you can for those that don't know that's the date where you can trade guys that you sign right? So. He said look I've asked that question. I haven't got a real answer on that question. Not yet at least he's like, but I sure as hell would and I'm with him buyer. You have to look at a Robin Lopez. And if that means contagious call well, pope's gotta go. Well, he's got to go. You know, because you've got a guy Josh Hart who's out playing him. Anyway, listen, Josh thought this summer was big for him. You know, how to great summer league? Preseason was playing well, and I I was telling one of my buddies who's a big time Laker fan. Who's was like this? Josh Harnett was like listen at the end of the day that kids want to be on the floor. We're going to give more time and call. We knows a veteran who's been around this leave right now like you said Josh out planning and Josh does a little bit more. Right. He gives it up on the defensive, and it's tough plays hard on it into floor can put the ball on the floor get to the basket along with being able to knock down three point or so I like the way Josh is playing in the ways developed Byron before we get to the calls as a copy will want to chime in into the conversation. I mentioned Stephen was on earlier on his radio show. Now two days ago. We played some audio where he was kind of looting to like, hey, man. You know, things are stunned slowing LA and he's like, I'm not advocating for them. You know, fire Luke or anything like that. But you know, they got to turn it around. They gotta get better. And look man, we all know Stephen as plugged in. Yes. We know Steven A magic or cool. I mean, so my guess is they've had conversations before. So I played the audio yesterday. And I told the audience I'm like, look if he's saying this something's up, and then boom this morning, the story breaks, and here we go. So Stephen our buddy was having a little bit of a victory lap today on the radio show. Tell y'all right now, this is what it is. You can slice. It any damn way. You want to I'm telling you what I know Luke Walton I'll get this turned around. He gonna be without a job. I'm not telling you I want that to happen for I wanted to work for him and LeBron James has been publicly and privately supportive of them because abroad James knows he's just gotten their number to work with younger players number three. Dave got to come along. But this go less. I'm tell you right now. Look does nocco last season at the rate is going. I'm tell you right now, you already have I I'm not playing. Way to get to a point where you figure out notice. Dan, stop you want to have an accident. I came on on air two days ago jar did I not do that two days ago? Talking about Luke Walton. How you doing lounging on my couch? Well, let me think of all the people in the league I can talk about let me go on talk about Luke Walton. He crazy, man. That's my man my man. But look he's not right. If this thing goes sideways, Luke may be in real trouble. It doesn't mean. He's in trouble vis second. Right. Right. Right. He's been put on notice, George, but you know, what every coach in this league for sure I mean, if if it doesn't turn around if your expectations are high in you don't get off to a good start you all of a sudden on the hot seat. And if it stays that way for the next ten fifteen games, you lose your job is simple in NBA. This is a what what have you done for me lately? Type league. Stephen Stephen, a Smith said today is is not news. I really think we all understand that. I think Luke understands we all day today. We all day today. In hindsight of everything that he said, I think that we all love, Luke. We all know, he's a great guy. Very young coach. I think is a very good coach. I think this thing will turn around for him. And I think these guys will all get on the same page. But again, I it's okay to put it out there that if you don't get it turned around you. You will no longer have a job because that's that's the pressure being coaching the NBA and especially being special code Angeles in Los Angeles and the coach of LeBron James, right? That's that's correct. Or is in Glendale. What's up? On behalf of Laker nation. I gotta say, please. Making excuses for LeBron James we have to start making excuses for this guy who's making excuses. He lost was making his. Here's the media's making excuses right from the gecko by pointing the fingers Luke Walton it's not fair to. But I don't think the media's necessarily pointing the finger Liuhua magically pointing the finger at Luke Walton right now. I think the president of basketball operations magic wants to know what's going on Luke. And I'm pretty sure it was taken out of context. One reported by. Whoa. I mean, why would you say that he's the best in the business that reporting? The best in the business. Reporting for mad. I don't know any listen shambles this early this this early listen won't you don't get a whole lot of stuff wrong. Yeah. Believe me. I think maybe he hits like he's like ninety nine point eight percent. His percentage of any anybody in the NBA. So he doesn't get along lot of things wrong. And I understand what you come from as well. You know, being being a coach ex coach the coach is always the one to get the blame. I. Oh, yeah. You know? That's that's just that's just that's just how it is honest with standing here yesterday. He said the same thing. So that warranted. Most of the time. Again, the coaches doesn't coaches don't play the game. Right. All you can do is get your guys out there prepared the one thing that that. I miss about playing is that you have control. Yeah. As a player, that's what I really missed one thing about coaching that I hate it is that I didn't have control because I can't go out there and play. So you're right. As far as don't don't point the finger at Luke because it's not. Luke spot or or not all loose fault. Whatever you wanna say because everybody's talking about rotations. And all this stuff. He's still trying to figure it out as well. You know, and there's some games where yet a players if they would have made a couple of plays here, and there they wouldn't be three and five probably be five and three. So it all kind of goes into circle to me. And I think at the end of the day, you know, in twenty games from now, we'll be talking about how great the turnaround was. And I think that's exactly what's going to happen. I it. It is interesting, and I wanna get into that aspect of it on the other side. But let me grab Adam real quick. And on -tario what's up, Adam? It was only criticism. I could actually see of Luke Walton is is he able to say no to LeBron James. And example is when he put LeBron James and the second quarter under two minutes. By ten. Lebron almost gets hurt whose decision was it to make the Braun come in at that time wasn't necessary could be totally wrong. But I think he should say no instead on the bench going to half time to the third quarter. I don't know. That's look. I mean, everybody coaching superstar isn't always easy right because buying you coached them before I have and these guys can talk about wanting to preserve their bodies and play X amount of minutes. But then there are times they're going to be like I wanna play and I'm going in. Right. I mean, that's happened to you. It is. I mean, you you again, you know, you can sit on with a guy at the beginning of season. Like, LeBron James and said, this is what I have planned for you, minute wise. And then you get in the heat of the moment in LeBron's out there. And he might have like you said got hurt a little bit. And he went to the bitch as a coach all of always asked my guys. How do you feel you know? And if they tell me that they feel great and all this stuff. I'm really looking at them in in trying to figure out if they're telling me the truth or not. But you gotta go by what they say. You know? So if he tells me. Me I can play then boom. All right. I'm gonna put you back in the game. It's a catch twenty two when you're dealing with superstars because again, you they didn't get that way. You know, they got that way for reason because they're so competitive and they wanna play they wanna play against the best. They wanna prove points and LeBron is no different than any other superstar. I've ever been around. You know, when you put in that type of situation two things on the other side more with Byron obviously will continue to chat with you guys. I do wanna get into how they can turn this thing around and look a weaken discuss LeBron's potential impact on this whole situation too. Because I think there's something to be said about that. We'll tell you what specifically next Sudan show continues here. Byron Scott hanging out with us here till seven o'clock show Byron we were talking about how things can turn around for the Lakers, and we do want to talk about LeBron potential involvement how to fix or not fix any of this stuff. That's transpired today between magic and Luke. But you mentioned when this thing turns around, I actually think there is a quote unquote lull in the schedule that I think we'll see after these next couple of games look tough game at Portland as we've talked about this always a house of horrors right for the Lakers in a lot of cases. Yeah. Yeah. The raptors quiet company playing pretty good pretty good. And then look you got Minnesota again. I think that's a winnable game absolutely right at Sacramento the plane well now, but there's still the kings still a winnable game. They're not they're six and three. But I don't they're catching teams by surprise right now. That's not gonna last Lanta. Come right? And then they got the hawks. Right. And I don't think losing every game to Portland, they got home. They got land. Then they go on the road Orlando Miami. That's weird back to back. But or Landau is definitely winnable. Miami's winnable but the back toback is always weird. Yes. And then at Cleveland, that's a winnable game for sure because they stink. Terrible. So there can be some wins in there that all of a sudden after that road trip and thanksgiving rolls around you could be five hundred. Yeah. I mean, again, you gotta take him consideration to schedule. That that this? Laker team is face early. Partisans got San Antonio, which was a game. They could have one wheel Portland in Portland is just a moss or for some reason. It's just tough to win and Portland. Yeah. Tool. Those the first one. Yeah. You got two of them in the first month. Denver, you know, you beat Denver near very good basketball. You see that you see their record right now. So the schedule hasn't been the most favorable schedule for team has just been put together. Yes. You know? So again, I think we're all a little too excited about where we are right now are over anxious about my God, you know, we're not gonna make everybody just has to relax a little like Georgia has said pump the brakes pump the brakes. Patience is a virtue. We all know that this will turn around the schedule. We'll lighten up and this team will get rolling. Just have that faith. Don't be Michael Thompson. Don't please don't be Michael Thomas Thomson is just he's on Michael Thompson, Matt to do you like I did Michael Thompson knock you you know, what out. For those that does. So, you know, now that makes me do that story has been told here on the radio, and it hasn't really been told by coach Scott here now Byron he says Michael says that you guys were play fighting. Okay. And that you smacked him up. But that you know, it was just messing around. No. That's not true true. The truth to the story is this George Michael web been talking for so long about nobody could beat him in boxing or anything because he's the greatest boxer in the world. He's the greatest Shammar HAMAs. Ali he's Bahamas Aliya. And I challenged him to a fight and Corinne brought gloves in Michael wouldn't put the gloves on. So he kept talking about a week later. I walked up to him while he was sitting on the beach. I said if you stand up on knock, yo you know, what out and I said we just gonna slap box. I'm not we not fighting. I said, but we're gonna slap box. He stood up. So. Okay. But if you know put you do get ready now, are you ready? He's like, yeah. I'm right. I said, you sure he said, yeah. Slapped him. And I missed a slap at him about eight times, and Gary Beaty got his witness was standing there before we even started and said, Michael don't do. It seem be fight. Yeah. He's going to hurt. You know, he will in the in the in the Michael Thompson way of saying, oh, he can't hurt me. Even hit me hurt me that was Michael tone. I commenced hit him about ten times. And he finally said, I quit, and he was swinging and never touch me is nose was busted. Oh, his his his lip was busted, my whole handprint was on the right side of his face slapped him, the you know, what out of and I talk the whole time is laughing so just to keep the record straight. Yeah. What Michael Thompson just saying that? So fans don't make me have to Michael Thompson. You calm down. Relax is going to be okay. There we go. Now, we got the record straight around. Yeah. Yeah. Now, we know that sounds allies that and it's all in the form or is this practice facility form after four in the locker room. Okay. Jim hill. Here's a witnesses will came in afterwards and said, Michael what happened to your face and Mike was like goes, nothing nothing. Jim asked me what happened. I said I to that simple as that. And that's it. I told him you from the Bahamas from Inglewood, y'all. Don't fight. No. And a and all that we fight me. So I had to let go you did clearly the case. All right. So before we move onto the folks on on hole, then and people tweet NAT us. We mentioned about LeBron and his impact on this situation with the story about magic, and Luke and magic, you know, admonishing that was the word that was used admonishing, Luke. Now a couple of days ago. The bron- was asked about patients. Right. Everybody's talking patients. Lebron was asked first by Trudell and Trudell ask them the question. And he he said all the right things. Right. And then one of the follow up questions was from another reporter who I don't know. I don't recognize the voice and he asked well when you lose that patience. You know, what is that look like, and here's how that exchange went patients out. And what do you look like as a leader when your patients? You probably don't wanna be around with my run. So that was also this week, right? When all these things were happening now, I'm not saying that LeBron directly impacted the conversation between magic and Luke. But I'm sure magic heard that too. And I've been around LeBron enough Byron even though I'm not saying, I know him or I'm tight with him or any of that stuff. I know when he says stuff he understands the weight of his word. Absolutely. So do you believe that potentially could have at least slightly impacted these conversations could have slightly. But again the way it was put to him as when your patient runs out. What is look like it's not saying it has run. It has ran out. Correct. Right. So I mean, again, we got we got to listen to the questions that was asked to LeBron. And he's not saying my patience is running. You just saying you don't wanna be around me when it does. Right. So right now again, I think he's he's very aware of the situation. He understands exactly what the type of position he has put himself in. He understands the position at this team is in and he knows a lot of this is going to fall on his shoulders, and we know that he has brought an of shoulders to handle it. So again, I took that for what it was worth. You know, which is you know, what my patience has run out. But you don't wanna be around me when it does. Right. And we're going to keep, you know, keep what we're doing as far as you know, trying to plug alone and win these games and figure it out the team. But if it doesn't work in my patients do run out y'all wanna be around me. Right. It's going to be like, yeah. Anybody get Michael Thompson in that way. Done in the city of industry. What's up done? I'm just cracking. I league. Yep. Into valerian. Had to do SA just had to do what I had to do. Good fan from away back you and Michael Cooper, man. You were like that too much. Anyway, you know, I think there's gonna be a big test of how strong the front offices. You know, because you know, when LeBron went to Miami, he wasn't real respectful towards spoil stroke, but Pat Riley lay down the laws at no, we're not changing coaches coming down to coach route getting this is our coach, you know, you're on the contract. Go play, you know. So I'm very interested to see if magic how strong the leadership is there. It's gonna be all. Bring in Tyron Lou. Available. I don't want to hear that. You know? It's like I wanna match to step up and say, everybody's got to step up players coaches. Everybody front office, you know. And but you know, I I don't I don't I don't wanna see this week this. You know, I wanna you know. 'cause like, hey, man, you know, 'cause Pat Riley was coaching that team supposed or was the coach, but you're getting coached by Pat Riley. So you know, I just wanna see I just wanna see a little strength out of the front office. I don't wanna say the Lakers being a puppet Pulo Brom. Let's get your thoughts on the gotta take a quick because I want to get your thoughts on that. And I do think that LeBron done bridge of an interesting point. But I do think that there is something to keep an eye on here with LeBron here especially over the next day or so we'll tell you what that is as well. And just a second. But I I gotta tell you about our friends at a Reilly auto parts when it comes to safety. So down show continues here on ESPN LA taking you up to seven o'clock tonight. Byron Scott is in the house talking Lakers and all the drama surrounding Magic Johnson, quote, unquote. Admonishing Luke Walton done who was our last caller brought up a great point. I wanted you to answer. I don't want to wanna disembowel wanna make sure we get his response here or your response to his question. He asked about the front office being strong, basically, not Kow towing Brian. And look when you have a superstar super duper duper star. Lebron there are some concessions, right? You even the great, Pat Riley. I can tell you because I was there made some concessions now there were certain things he wouldn't bend on. I remember when LeBron wanted maverick Carter and those guys on the team plane at first it wasn't okay. Eventually, Pat bended. A little bit on some of that stuff. I remember one specific incident. I think it was New Orleans and LeBron wanted to stay over one night. And the team was like, I don't know, and they called patent something along the lines of now, you're not staying there. And it was it was a shock to the system because it wasn't what he was used to. But there were some things they bent on for sure. So you're always gonna have that which star players, but how do the Lakers tread in that scenario? Do they tread lightly there with him because he kinda does all the cards? I mean, the Lakers have had a bad five years. Right. Like, how do you deal with that scenario of your magic and company? Well, first of all done, you don't know magic very well. If you think he's going cower Bron James magic is about as strong as a personality as you've ever gonna get and being able to confront LeBron on his level because again, magic Zada different level, even even at a different level than LeBron James is right now Magic Johnson's one of all time greats. Lebron is as well magic has five championship rings. That's enough right there to say, you know, what LBJ now we're not doing that. You know? So I'm gonna tell you right now. That's not Magic Johnson. Now, he will probably been certain things like you said 'cause certain things ain't worth fighting. Right. You know what I mean? Certain things ain't we're fighting over right now. So I'm sure he'll been on the phone a few things that he thinks. Is relevant to the tonight whole situation veal, but things that are big time that he knows he has to stay in ground. He will not have a problem doing that. And I think LeBron will respect that. And he already respects the greatest of all time. So I don't think that'd be a problem. I happen to think buyer, my theory, and all of this has been that. I think his relationship with magic is going to be probably the best of any that he's had because of that. Because he looks at magic as a peer on top of the fact that he's he knows magic knows what it's like to be. Lebron absolute walk in the shoes of the best player on the planet. Absolutely. Amongst many things, you know, the business accurate, and they have that in common. You know, the philanthropy all that stuff social awareness. All that stuff have in common and magic as you said, it's strong. But he's not the coach you played for. Little bit of a dictator at times is that fair to say that's more than fair to say. Yeah. Is his way more times than not or the highway that was that was riles? I think that magic is a little a little more amenable because he understands what it's like to be in the brunt shoes. So I think that relationship will be okay. The fascinating thing to me. I think we'll be to watch out for. And Scottie Pippen talked about this today on the jump which is will LeBron take up for Luke now that the story's out there. Now doesn't look like the players. Mike spoke today. Right. I don't see any culture many players, right. It was just Luke today. Now haven't seen anything yet show, and they're they've already flown out to Portland, right? But Scotty said this on the jump today Byron. And I thought it was interesting. And it makes a ton of sense is about really how much is LeBron James going to stand up for Luke Walton now, and that's really what it comes down to the Brian James willing to speak up for the water. Do he have that confidence that can get into the championship or in the playoff? He's gonna get asked him Portland about all this stuff for. Sure. Absolutely. And you know, what I think it's unfair question. He doesn't know nuke. Will yet? You know what? I mean, he's been with Luke what three months, not even not even that, you know, so training camp preseason. And now the first eight games of the season. So I think it's unfair question to him to get a real real true answer from now, I think he'll be politically, correct. And saying look as our guy, you know, we know he can get the job done but deep down in his heart. He doesn't know that yet. Right. You know? I mean to be honest. I don't think he really knows that yet. He's trying to get to know Luke, just like Lucas trying to get to know him. And again, this is everybody involved. But obviously because you the best player in the world, you know, that that fish fishbowl. Everybody's looking down at you. You know? But I think it is a question that you you're right. George is going to be asked tomorrow to to LeBron James about Luke Walton and might be asked as few other players as well. But at this stage of their relationship, I think is unfair question for him to have to answer. Yeah. Scotty, I agree with that wholeheartedly. It's not because he doesn't have a real religion barely knows. But right. He can only attest to whatever religion. They have right at this point. Right. But it will be fascinating. Because if he doesn't say. Anything if he just kinda like blows the question off. That's not good either. No, no. It's not good. I mean, whatever way he answered but besides the way saying look guy, right? And I believe going to be going be. No matter what. So he he's almost in a no win situation unless he just comes on say, I have all the faith in world, Luke Walton he can get us to the championship and win a championship with him coach. Right. Welcome to LeBron land folks is a little different a lot. I was trying to tell you all this is not your regular garden variety superstar. Okay. It is not everything is a big deal. I noticed up. Hi, steven. So by the way, before I move onto the calls, and you can call in at eight seven seven seven ten ESPN eight seven seven seven three seven seven six. He did gain a little wild today, though, the job talking about magic, which I thought was funny. But I thought because you were coming in. I wanted to make sure you had this particular cut ready for you to listen to. Here's what Scott he said about magic and the cloth that he's cut from the court. If you watch every game he got his shoes on so he's a guy that he's going to be hands in and he's gonna let Luke Walton know that you're not going to be comfortable here. We all know that Matt Roddy of magic. Rally era. So he will come out of that office and go get on that band. So it's really about trying to make sure that they're pushing forward. Now, I don't think he literally meant that the actual coaching bench but years sitting right there he is sitting right there. But first of all you got understand Magic's fan. Yeah. He's a basketball junkie. He's a fan. He loves the game. Go sit courtside every single game. He's gonna shoot his team on and he's gonna wear his emotions on his sleeve just Irvin. Magic Johnson right now. As far as wanting to come on court. He don't wanna play but grown don't wanna play basketball coaching or coach it he been there done that yet he understands that time has gone I'm gonna let these young guys handle it. But he is going to be hands on doubt about that. He has been hands on from the day. He picked up a basketball from high school to college to the pros in business. He's been hands on that's his nature. So so guys you can't look over there and said, oh my God. You know, magic is sitting there with my job's in jeopardy. No. You gotta. Do your job because he's going to be sitting there whether you they're not. Yeah. Let's go to will. And torrance. What's up? Well, hey, what's going on George? Oh, yeah. I think the main thing man is is we were the chicken chicken little syndrome right now, the sky is in fall, and we just gotta relax. We can easily be six into right now. And we wouldn't be having this conversation. But I think that thing we need to look at really is is pace and defense. If you look at the pace, I think the Lakers lead the NBA Phil Phil is attempted per game. They're in the top five and assist offensively. We we're doing things I just think but pace I think is leading to the detriment on the defensive side because at the end of the day, if you're taking you know, ninety two one hundred shots a game your opponents, obviously take just as many, and if you're not an paces is going to affect defense. We're not going to be winning any tacos every night. We're not holding guys hundred points that era is done. I just think we really need to look at the pace down a little bit. The pace is good. But it's affecting our defense. And I really think the Lakers need to look into slowing it down getting it more to broaden oppose. Doing things and the other thing I do think we are suffering a little bit on sizes. We saw you guys brought up the Marcus Aldridge situation. The other night that was that was pretty pretty bad because he was feasting. But again, I think it's ticking little girl right now sky is not follow. We could easily be six into. But I really think this this weekend is is I don't know who made the schedule. How do you play back to back from Portland to Toronto? I definitely know. They're not going to run. They're coming back to LA. All right. So so so I read, but I was about to say that that's ridiculous. But I do feel we're running into a buzzsaw against Toronto. I'm thinking after sixteen games you guys to be Scott. You said that you did to George. I think eight after sixteen because we just have a really tough schedule is an acceptable. I I'm taking eight through twenty percent of the season. I'll be happy with that create a guys. Thank you will is the pace too fast for LeBron right now. He by maybe it's just my what I'm seeing. And but he looks a little gas the game. I think you know, the pace has been great. And I think for the first three quarters paces great. But I think you had to pick and choose their fourth quarter when you run and when you don't right. Lebron James is not back to the basket. Type. You know basketball player. I know you talked about, you know, posting him up excuse me. Posting them up more. That's not his game. No. It hasn't been for year. No, nobody wants to face up. Because now he could see everything on defense when he can see if you're gonna double team, and then he wants to back you down. But I do agree with. Far as pace is concerned. I think there's times to run and there's I mean look at us back in the day. We ran and ran and Renton fourth quarter KOMO cap. You know, we're gonna throw that ball down the post we gonna slow it up a little bit. We'll run on some steals or turnovers and things of that nature. But I think you had Luke has to pick and choose in that fourth quarter window Winslow to pace down and win to try to take advantage of the athleticism of this team. Coming up next. There is a story out there in the LA times about some of the specifics of what magic was not happy with in regards to his conversation with Luke we'll get to that here in just a second.
