"And I will be completely candid. I think my vote is defensible, I think that Michael Harris the second is a worthy rookie of the year. But if I had gone back and forth on it one more time, I might have talked myself into voting for sponsorship. Either what is this obviously worthy? Yeah. In many years, yeah. And a couple of things I think that recommend Michael Harris also recommend Spencer strider in that Michael Harris, so first of all, we should remark on the fact that Michael Harris is as of this moment 21 years old and 8 months. He was doing what he was doing in the big leagues at the age that a lot of college draftees are still playing college ball, right? So there's that piece of it. There's the fact that he had a very limited time in the minor leagues, you know, he lost the 2020 season entirely as everyone did. And he just didn't have a lot of minor league Ron, and then he comes up to the big leagues, I think that we kind of knew where some of Harris's vulnerabilities stood in terms of his profile, and we saw, you know, the overcoming some of those vulnerabilities and still being very good version of him and his rookie campaign, right? He doesn't walk a lot, tends to strike out a lot. There's chase in the profile, right? And you worry about him getting sort of figured out. And if you watched him in the early going, he underwent a swing change early in his big league tenure in front of everybody and it worked. And that's incredible, especially for a guy where the swing and miss was like the thing we were kind of worried about with him. So I found that in conjunction with just the variety of places that he was able to bring really profound value to his team to be sort of the thing for me, right? In addition to posting a one 36 WRC plus, he stole 30 basis he played really great defense in center field. So he just had a variety of ways that he could bring a lot of value to the club. And you know, when you're, I hope that no one is looking at rookie of the year or any vote and just saying, well, here, let's rank the wars, but he and he and strider, I think, had .1 win of difference between them by our version of war, the gaps were wider for other outlets that have a war. So there's that. But the way that I was thinking about it is these guys really brought the same amount of value to the braves. They brought it in different ways, but they brought a tremendous amount of value. Now stridor, you know, he went from being a bullpen guy to being what he was as a starter. So he also had to undergo a transformation at the big league level and did it with a plum. So again, I went back and forth and back and forth and back and forth, but to me sort of just the completeness of Harris's campaign, the variety of ways that he brought value to the team, ended up being the thing, but again, if I had had one more turn, maybe I would have been like, yeah, but like, look at her. And I will say, it would not surprise me if Harris, you know, has a lot of seasons in his big league career where he accumulates less war than this, right? I still think that there is vulnerability in his profile at the plate. And so if I had to take a sort of bet on who is going to have the more productive big league career, I don't know how I would answer that. I still think that Harris is vulnerable. Stridor is a pitcher, so they're always just prone to breaking. And we saw the injury stuff for him a little bit this year, but for me, and I think this is true for everyone. Like The Rookie of the year vote is in a is in a forward looking vote. That's not its purpose. We're not casting a preemptive Hall of Fame vote. We're saying who had the best rookie season. And so I ended up going with Harris. I think he's a tremendous player. I mostly think that this vote just illustrates the incredible position that Atlanta finds itself in when it comes to the young contributors on their roster. And we've talked about that as every single one of them except for dance movies once signed an extension. So we don't have to believe her at that point, but they really are just in a very enviable spot from a core perspective. We might look at each of the individual extensions that their young players have signed and hoped that maybe in some cases they had signed for more money in some cases a lot more money, but it's a really, really good group. And I'm excited to see what they do. But that doesn't matter for The Rookie of the year vote among that really, really good group is Michael Harris the second and my vote. Yeah, that's a perfectly understandable to me. I'm so stressed about it, though, Ben. Which is stupid, because it's not about me at all. And it's a defensible vote. So it's not like I'm going to. Totally. But I had a really hard time. I really struggled going back and forth between them because strider had such an exemplary year. And, you know, if this is one of those years where they ended up tied, they won't put like if they did, I'd be like, cool, everybody gets what they want and hopefully Atlanta fans look at this and appreciate the Lake difficulty that we all had in ranking them. I imagine strider's going to get a fair share of first place votes. And I wouldn't be remotely surprised if you won. I don't think I will be in Dan's case position from last year where he was a voice in the wilderness. So that's nice because I am at my core anxious and praise seeking. So being alone on an island would feel bad, but I think that given how great Michael Harris season was, I'm not likely to be in that position. Yeah, he voted for Trevor Rogers, right? He was the only one who gave Trevor Rogers a first place vote. Correct, I believe that that's right. Yeah. Yeah, I don't think anyone will give you grief for voting for Harris. I don't think anyone would have if you'd voted for strider. I have not analyzed this in anything like the depth you did because I did not have a word for it, so I don't know what I would have decided.

"Of baseball. Yeah, and I mean, first of all, any opportunity we have to use the phrase press the flushes when we should climb criticizing your use of it. I'm just saying. It really depends on what flesh you're pressing specifically. I don't know. I mean, I get when you look at, you know, we have examples of this even within baseball, like there were a bunch of events around LA, for instance, when I was there for the All-Star Game in the draft this year. And it did have an energy to it, but I don't see how that energy outside of the game wouldn't necessarily outweigh the experience you'd have watching it on TV or even being there in person when you just have like home fans who can go. So I don't like that one. I like a lot of Scots ideas, but I'm gonna pass on that one, I think. Yep, me too. We like his big picture ideas, but perhaps not as they pretend to the postseason. At least in these two cases. All right, so we're gonna do a double draft today. This is something that has been done on effectively wowed in the past. We've had this double draft this start of the off season. And it is one, the free agent contracts over under draft. I believe this is the 8th annual instance of that draft, and then we're also going to do the World Series odds movers draft, which has been done several times, but I think it's been a few years since the last one of those. So we're bringing it back and we'll be combining both of those in this episode. Just before we get to that, now that the midterms are over or mostly over, I guess we turn our attention you're saying this to a person who lives in Arizona. Yeah. Moreover in some places than others. But we will turn our attention to baseball voting and elections and results. Not just Hall of Fame, but this is a words week. Yeah. And we don't make that huge a deal for words week. I think we're less awards forwards than some. I've kind of moved on from awards and adapted the general stance that what happened happened and I can come to my own conclusions and who wins the awards doesn't sway me all that much, but it's still something to talk about and something people pay attention to. And you had a vote. We teased this a while back and you haven't been able to divulge it, but we are recording just a few hours before the announcement of the reggae of the year votes. Yeah. And so by the time this episode is posted, those will be out there and your vote will be too and thus we can dissect it now and I don't know who you voted for. So this will be a surprise to me too. And again, we don't know who won as we speak now. And there's not that much suspense for me even those these are extremely close races in both leagues. I guess for me, it's just whoever wins is fine. Basically, there were so many good choices that it fits one of the Atlanta Braves candidates in the NL or if it's rich men in the AL or if it's Julio in the AL, like these are all good players who will probably go on to good careers and so I guess the only thing that would really surprise me if it was very lopsided one way or the other it seems like it probably should be pretty close, but you had an NL vote. So I did. I had an NL rookie of the year vote and I voted for Brendan Ottoman no. In 30 years. So I ended up casting my vote for Michael Harris the second. And I want to preface what I'm about to say with a couple of things. I want to reiterate just because I think that it is something that is, it is useful for people who consume the results of these votes to be aware of how the electorate might engage with some of the issues that are sort of tangential to the vote. So it luckily did not end up being an issue in this case because Michael here's the second signed an extension. Spencer Schrader signed an extension of both of them were likely to be top two voters regardless, but I just want to say again that when I found out that I had a rookie of the year vote it was prior to both of those things being true. In terms of the extensions. And again, it seemed likely that they were both going to end up in the top spot and stridor was up, you know, from the get go this year. So like his him attaining a year of service time wasn't really on the table, but it did make me very, very uncomfortable that I was potentially going to help set the timeline for when Michael Harris reached free agency or not. And, you know, in talking with my fellow BBW a members who had votes that seemed to be a recurring theme for them as well. And it ended up not mattering. It doesn't matter in the AL race either because, you know, Julio signed his big deal. It seems likely that if Julio wins that rushman will be in the second spot and so he'll just get a year of service time, right? But I want folks to know that we think about that part and it is a weird position to be put in. It doesn't seem like the purpose that we originally envisioned as an association for these votes. So like that made me nervous and then relieved. So there's that. I also want to say that I went back and forth on this pen, oh my God. I went back and forth and back and forth back and forth.

"The brave score two runs in the top of the 11th inning for an 8 7 win over the Phillies Atlanta took the way for good when an RBI single by Ronald Acuna junior they got an insurance run on a single by Michael Harris the second that enabled the braves to stay one and a half games behind the first place mets in the national league east We just want to go out there and win every night regardless if the mets win or lose As long as we win we can't control what they do So we just try to do what we can do and go out there and win every night Kyle schwarber hit a pair of solo home runs for the fills who saw their magic number to clinch a playoff birth go down to 8 Michael luongo Philadelphia

"Little bit about the AL Cy Young race, I suppose we haven't talked much about the NLC English because it sort of has seemed like a contra has had that sewn up for a while, although depending on which were you look at, which pitching stats you look at, not necessarily. But just because he has the innings lead in the lower array. It seems like he's been the presumptive FrontRunner for a while, but again, like there's time to talk about those things, but what we have maybe overlooked a little is The Rookie of the year race in both leagues and I know you have a vote in the NFL. I'm kind of strong handcuffed. Yeah. I've been shoved into a locker. Are you not allowed to discuss it at all? No. It's not allowed to discuss who you're voting for, which you may not even know at this point. I don't know who I'm voting for. Okay. I don't think you're allowed to talk about who you're voting for in advance. I think that we can talk about their relative merits, but I'm going to tread very carefully because I don't want to get a meaning email. I want to be stripped of my voting rights. I don't want to be boosted out of the BBW AA. I got trouble to cause. I don't want to get you in trouble. I have proposals, but I have some proposals. Sorry, you know, I gotta make those. Okay, yeah, keep your powder dry for that. But the point is that both of those races regardless of who ultimately wins really close, like just as close as the other awards races we were talking about. At least going by fangraphs were, it's neck and neck in both leagues. And they're both fun races and again, like we can just say, they're all great. Yeah. Matt Kemp's old tweet that Sam loves so much about the Hall of Fame where he just said, put them all in. They should all be put them on. In the AL, you have Julio and you have adley Richmond. Yeah. Who are almost indistinguishable, according to fan graphs were. And then in the NL, you have a couple of Atlanta rookies. You got a couple of guys hanging out in Atlanta. Hitter and pitcher take your picks. And Michael Harris the second. And again, very little daylight between them and fangraphs were. Maybe a tad more in baseball reference were. So Rodriguez and Richmond Harris and strider, strider who is memorably listed on the a's broadcast this week as a way pitcher dot short name in brackets. Those are just fun players on fun teams and also players who I think for the most part are very promising, so they're not in the genre of rookie who's having a good season, but you don't know whether they're actually a good player and it's like, well, we could still vote for them for rookie of the year, but it might look a little weird decades down the road when their careers didn't pan out. People don't have a lot of concerns about Julio and Richmond long term. And obviously the braves don't have concerns about Michael Harris the second because they just locked him up for a long time and Spencer strider really good as well. So hopefully we will be watching and enjoying these plays for a long time. But just fun races on fun teams and players who have helped revitalize those teams. Like strider and Harris have been so big for the braves this year, ruchman really turned around the Orioles season. I don't want to say single handedly, but Baltimore before and after. He definitely played a big role. Yeah. And then you have another guy who hits team just made a big long-term bet on. So love them all. I have to vote. I don't have a vote. So I don't have to make any difficult decisions, but it's just kind of fun to contemplate. So like pretty much all of the major awards this year. I don't know that there's like an obvious shoe in most of them and there's some really intriguing debates and discussions. If you're someone who likes to have those. So here's a here's a little question for you, Ben. I want to make sure that my understanding of the rules around this stuff are accurate. So I am given to us I'm given to understand that per the new collective bargaining agreement. If Richmond places in the top two he will receive a year of service time, right? He'll be credited for a full year of service time. Despite not being up in time for that. But because he was not up on opening day, the Orioles are not eligible to receive a draft pick to reward them for his immediate promotion. Is that understanding correct? Okay, so quoting from a piece from our pal Evan relic, teams who promote players in time to receive a full year of service, which is a 172 days so opening day or very shortly thereafter have a chance at additional picks in the amateur draft so the Orioles didn't do that and perhaps couldn't do that because Richmond was hurt at the start of the season, right? Right, but then he was down in triple-A for a while after he returned from injury. Some of which I imagine was him rehabbing in some of which was probably not. However, a player who has rookie eligibility opens the season with 60 days or fewer in service time and who is included on two of the top prospect lists gets credited with a full year of service, even if they were promoted too late on the calendar to otherwise have received it if they finish in the top two in rookie of the year voting in their week. So yes, I think that's right and Richmond seems like a cinch to be top two. Right, and he would have been, I mean, he was obviously even if he wasn't the number one prospect for every publication was a top prospect in the publications that they're looking to, which I think is BA, ESPN, and maybe something else. Yeah. Yeah. Dot com, probably. I would imagine. Oh, sure, yeah, yeah. So, you know, interesting that dynamic is sort of interesting in that race. Again, I think you are right to say that this is like a two person race and the service time stuff doesn't matter when it comes to Julio because he has this massive contract. So he's sorted and so that you have that wrinkle around Richmond. And then in the NL race, much to my relief. Because of when strider was promoted, which was quite early, he was probably, I imagine he was on the opening day roster for Atlanta even. Yeah. And then Michael Harris's second extension, like that dynamic doesn't really matter there as much, which made me very nervous and then was alleviated. So thanks, everybody. But yeah, it's just like a lot of, it's a lot of good young players. I really fell off, didn't he? Yes, very much so. Yeah. It's been batting a lot lately. He started so well. He looked so good. Yeah, it looked like this is a case of the league adjusting. I have not looked into the specifics, but yeah. Yeah, it might be time for someone to fantastic dot com to take a peek under the hood at Jeremy Pena. And be like, what happened to you, Jeremy, Pena. And then, of course. It's better than Jeremy Pena, at least right now. I wish right now, you know, long careers and what have you, but at least right now, and we would be remiss or at least that I would be if we did not point out that just like, man, Steve and Kwan, what a cool thing. What a cool thing for Stephen Cohen. What a year. What a year. Anyway, that's me. I appreciate Stephen Quan. I'm surprised he has even three home runs. Don't remember a single one of those, but my website tells me that he has hit the so good for him. Yeah, I will be, I will be really curious to see how people try to sort of define the Julio versus adley thing and sort that out because there is a contingent of voters who do care quite a bit about sort of how long you've done the thing. But you know, you're right to say, we have two points of WRC plus difference between them. I'm surprised that Richmond does as well as he does both baseball reference war because they don't include framing. So yeah, look at that. I mean, he is, he is very good defensively, you know.

"Been going crazy late because you're seeing the two New York teams see their first place leads shrivel dramatically, but to me it's a very different conversation for the two New York teams. To me, if the Yankees wind up not winning the American League east, we can rightfully say they completely blew it. And if the mets don't wind up winning the national yeast, I would say that braves took it from them because I was looking at it yesterday Sarah before I went on SportsCenter, the mets are playing at a 100 win pace since June 1st and that the braves have run them down. Is that fair? Is that a fair assessment in your mind? A 100%. Even as you're setting up the question, I was going to say this feels like the Yankees lawsuit versus the braves won and if those were to happen. And this no disrespect to the race, but they haven't been as overwhelmingly good as the braves have been. I mean, we had that crazy straight between the all star break and a couple of days ago where the mets embrace didn't lose on the same day for like think it was 14 straight times. I mean, if you look at the braves, since Michael Harris the second debut on May 28th, they are, I believe the second best team in baseball behind the doctors. I mean, they have been really good. They called up the right guys with him in von Grissom. They have two rookie of the year candidates and here are some spends or stride or I mean, they are a drug or not. And again, no disrespect to the rays, but the reason the ink is laid out is much more about them losing games. As you said, the master soul playing at a great pace, they're just losing ground because if they lose one game, the braves win that day. Yeah, well, I feel a lot better about the assessment that I gave then about this raid because I think it's apples and oranges when we talk about the New York teams losing leads in their respective divisions. All right, Sarah, great to talk with you. Thanks so much for having me. On Monday, Marley Rivera spoke

"Of the ringer joined by Meg rally of fangraphs hello neck. Hello. Julio. Julio. Forever Mariner. Forever Mariner, maybe it certainly seems like, boy, this extension, I'm still processing the terms here. Oh yeah. We all are. We're gonna have to just read some tweets, I think, Ben. Yeah. I think our only option is to read some pass and tweets here. Right, yes. Jeff has a whole threat here. Red. So let's just read the threat. Should I do you want to go like every other? Should I should I read all of them? How do you want to do this? Okay, I'll lead off. You could trade off. Every other tweet. Okay. There's a lot to digest Julio Rodriguez extension with Seattle per ESPN sources. The deal could be for 8 13 16 or 18 years. It guarantees Rodriguez $210 million if it maxes out, it will be the largest ever $470 million, the details are important. Here they are. The base of the deal is for 8 years and a 120 million. It includes this season and runs through 2029. After 2028, the Mariners must decide whether to pick up a club option, the size and length of that depends on Rodriguez's performance in MVP voting. The option is for 8 or ten years on top of the original deal depending on how Rodriguez fares in MVP voting wins and finishes it can range anywhere from 200 million to 350 million if the Mariners pick up the option Rodriguez's guarantee in the deal is at least 320 million. Now, if the Mariners don't pick up the option after year 7, Rodriguez has a player option after year 8 for 5 years and 90 million, thus the 13 year structure and $210 million floor. He could turn it down and hit free agency right before his 30th birthday, too. Here I will editorialize and remind everyone Julio Rodriguez, just 21. Yeah. Less tweet, the likeliest outcome who you're a Rodriguez is a Seattle Mariner through 2037. That's not a really year. Is that a really year 2037? I am a column of dust. Is that what we get the flying cars finally? And makes at least 320 million, probably much more, and if he turns into the monster that he has shown he is in his rookie season, it could be the most financially lucrative deal in American sports history, although who knows what inflation will have wrought by 2000. Be living on the moon by then. So this is obviously super exciting for Mariners fans and probably pretty exciting for Julio. Yeah. It's hard for me to even analyze the terms here in the way that we often do to try to gauge team friendliness or player friendliness, like, I don't know. There's just so many moving parts and options and vesting thingies and incentives. It is a lot of money regardless, and I guess it's the most guaranteed money that a player with his service time has gotten or at least his level of major league experience, I guess, surpassing wander Franco's extension and he, unlike wander, has a full year of service time, or is just about to because he came up on opening day this year, so I guess maybe he's more of like a one to two service time year player, but even for that, it's a record deal. So it's a record. I think we could say that. And how favorable it is to one party or another is sort of tough to assess, I suppose. I mean, we're still assessing Julio is as a player. Right. And who knows what this deal actually ends up looking like and how much he makes when it's all said and done. Okay, can I do, I'm going to do, I'm going to do a tiny, annoyed reaction. It's going to be tiny. We're going to get it out of the way. 'cause it's not the headline here, because you're right. The headline here is Julio Rodriguez effectively in all likelihood forever Mariner. I guess as an editor, I would just cut that down to Julio Rodriguez forever Mariner for the sake of brevity. That's what a sub head is for Ben. And he is just the face of the franchise that was effectively true and now it is formally true and what a delightful turn of events, this young guy who is just effervescent and so exciting and so talented and now he's a forever Mariner. So we're going to be excited about that part and we're going to be happy for him that he is guaranteed $210 million, but I'm going to pick I'm going to pick a knit. I'm going to pick a potentially $150 million knit Ben. Okay. I really don't think it is great for voting members of the BBW AAA to have this much influence over how much money you want. And I will sign an example closer to home. I shared on our last episode that I have an NL rookie of the year vote. I'm not decided on how I'm voting in that race and I am not revealing my vote on this podcast because you get yelled at when you do that. You get some, you get some feedback about doing that before the award is announced. But I think that when I learned I was going to have a vote in that race. Michael Harris the second had not yet signed his extension with Atlanta and our listeners will remember that Michael Harris the second was Harris was not up on opening day on like Julio, right? And the way that the CBA works. If you're a top two finisher in rookie of the year voting, you accrue a full year service time, regardless of whether of when you were called up, right? This is one of the measures that they put into the new CBA in an effort to combat service time manipulation. And I was very uncomfortable with the amount of influence I was at that time going to potentially have on Harris's service time and his free agency timeline. I thought that that was that. I think at the time that the CPA was enacted, I probably didn't say that because there were so many things for us to talk about and I was just so relieved that we were going to have a season, but it just fundamentally isn't the job of writers to have this kind of influence over the trajectory of a player's monetary future, right? I just don't think that this is what we're here for. It's unprecedented, right? There are all kinds of bonuses built into contracts around MVP or Cy Young finishes, right? There is precedent for this sort of thing to a degree, but not generally to this degree where there might be a $150 million swing in Julio Rodriguez's career earnings depending on how the MVP voting shakes out. And I think that directionally the stuff is aligned in the right way, right? "So, I mean, that kind of money is getting spent left and right, especially for big time organizations like the Atlanta Braves. So I love this. It's just an example of Alex on top of, I think, two things in how smart he is to be able to do this, have an understanding of what Michael Harris, the second brings to the organization for the future, we've seen briefly the talent, but also more importantly, the relationship. I mean, to be able to convince him, and of course, you're three months in. You're like, yeah, I'm signing anything to be able to make $5 million this year next year. Like, heck yeah, that's so much more than he would have made otherwise. So yeah, I think it's a huge credit to Alex, but also I think it's helpful for these players mentality to know that I'm good. I don't have to be worried about if something happens or I don't perform. Now I can go out and just be me. And I think that comfort level is really important. And the braves have really set it up such that their young players just don't have to worry about that. As you're saying, they're in such a spot where they can be them. Someone like Austin Riley. It took him a year and a half to really figure it out. At the major league level. And now look them in MVP conversations doing everything and not having to worry about how is this going to look in arbitration? What's going to happen in two or three years? So drilled credit to them Dallas and thoughtful as you said. And I will say on the other side, you know, Jeff, as he tweeted out this list of here's who is under team control through these years. He did quote tweet himself from January 2020 and said, of course, I have plans. So we have seen that. The White Sox had not going to read off the whole list again, but Louis Robert, eloy Jimenez, Tim Anderson, all of these guys under team control and yet we've seen that this team did not get far enough in the playoffs and you know they have not been able to live up to that in quite the way that our front expects when you are able to get all of those players under your control. Yeah, but most of those players were not signed to be able to continue to play. That's just team control because they're young and that's where I think the difference lies, at least for the braise right now is, I mean, we're talking three of those players for the brains are going into the 2030s.

"Players like Ronald Acuna are really the vessel for that into baseball. Well, finally, Justin, bringing this back to the guy who plays right next to Acuna and the outfield, Michael Harris, just three years after the braves drafted him out of high school. He's playing for his hometown team as they try to defend their World Series title. What has he said about what it's like for him being out there in a braves uniform on a contending team? Yeah, it's been crazy for him. And I've asked him this, I feel like a few times. One time he just told me that he was like a fan playing on the team. He goes, you really can't make this up, honestly, and he told me he goes, you can dream it, but he says nothing really compares to it, and just being out there on the field, having the brave Jersey with your name on it, and having the people behind you, cheering for you. And one of the best for you. It feels, it feels amazing. I never thought it would be like this. You can dream, you know, what you wanted to lead. But actually being here on the field with these guys, especially a lot of guys that I grew up watching and rooting for. It's always a good feeling. I even asked him last night what it was like, you know, having been a braves fan. And to now being part of one of the better teams and franchise history in terms of winning streaks, and he just said it's crazy because he remembers being in the stands last year for the NLCS against the Dodgers and those crazy games. And now he's on the field. Now that's him. And he was always the kid who watched braves games growing up, and he would envision himself in a big spot, whether, you know, it was extra innings, bottom of the 9th, you know, in a close game, you would envision himself moving a runner over, getting a key hit, or even hitting a home run, and now to actually be in a position to do those things for the braves. It's set in a little bit for him because he's mature beyond his years, but he hasn't lost the zest for it and hasn't lost the passion and hasn't lost the acknowledgment of how cool this is for somebody like him and how much he's living out a dream, which I think is awesome to see because he with some of these guys. And he's still young, but they play it off. Michael Harris doesn't play it off. He's very chill. He's very humble, but he's still acknowledges that he's living out a dream. And it's been really special to see. Well, thank you so much, Justin for coming on and telling us the story. Even as a mets fan, you can't help but like the guy. I'm looking forward to see how this NLE series goes. It'll be really interesting. Oh yeah, no, hopefully yeah, hold your breath over the next few months. "Popped up right side. Ronald is in an under and the braves have won 14 straight games. Their longest win streak in 9 years. No team in Major League Baseball has been hotter than the Atlanta Braves in the month of June. And one of the many reasons why is the sudden emergence of their top prospect, the youngest player in the majors, center Fielder, Michael Harris. Fly ball headed for the gap in left center at the track at the wall leaping try and gone. There's the first big league home run for Michael Harris and opposite field bullet into the braves Lopez. Enjoy that can you never forget your first. Today, we're joined by Justin toscano, who covers the braise for the Atlanta journal constitution to hear the story of three days that led the braves to fall in love with Harris as a player. When a lot of the industry overlooked him. And so they went back and they talked about him in the meeting room after the workout and they were saying how jaw dropping and they were like kids on Christmas the scouting team because they knew what they had. Plus the latest on what's shaping up to be a hard fought race between the braves and the mets and the NL east. From wondering, I'm Tiffany osinski. It's Friday, June 17th, and this is the lead. Man, he just continues to get it done guys. He's not intimidated at all. Justin toscana welcome to the lead, thank you for joining us. Thanks for having me. I'm a big fan of your podcast. So it was really cool if you guys to reach out and I appreciate you taking interest in the story. And yeah, no, I'm really excited to be on. I'm excited to have you on as well. So the braves have not yet lost in June. They've won 14 in a row, the longest streak of any team in the major leagues this season. So where does this rank for you in terms of longest win streak you've covered? Are we approaching your personal record yet? No, they've surpassed it actually. I think this has got to be a record because I cover the mets for three seasons before this. And I think in 2019, gosh, I think it was 7 or 8 wins in a row, so this is, yeah, this is about it for me. Like I have never covered in anytime I've ever covered a winning streak that's gone on like this and certainly not one that includes the statistical anomalies and the nightly occurrences like this one has. Just looking at this win streak on the whole, what's been going right for this team? You mentioned some statistical anomalies a second ago. So what's really stands out in terms of what's driving the streak. So to me, it's the situational hitting has become a lot better. Two out runs, two out RBIs, two out hits. Hot shot, that's through for a base hit. One run scores Contreras streaking around third, lane Thomas's throw to the plate. Not cut off. The kid comes through the braves with three two out RBIs in the game. As we speak, the braves of Homer ten times in the last two games, 5 each night. Swing and a fly ball belt at first pitch. That one's gonna go. What a night for Riley. The babes are getting another and bad in this game and they've got a shot to 5 home runs again. They've hit three homers in the last inning and two thirds and so there's a lot going right. And earlier in the season, it almost felt like the braves were sleepwalking. Whether you want to call that the championship hangover due to the walkout or a shortened spring training or something else, who knows, but now it seems like the pieces are clicking. They've always had the talent. They've always said the pieces. They always seem to have the depth in the lineup and the bullpens look good. The rotations look good. And now they've got 5, 6, 7 hitters that are all going at the same time and you're seeing how scary that can be. Well, the guy we're here to talk about today, The Rookie center Fielder Michael Harris, has also been a big part of this since he joined the team in late May. Can you just describe him as a player and tell us a little bit about his impact so far? Yeah, I think the best way to describe him is he's a 5 tool phenom that also has an impressive mix of humility personality and a growth mindset. I feel like I got a lot better in 2020 actually without a season. Going to the alternate site and going that just face another big league talent there and actually building a routine, getting to see how they have routines that work for them and make them successful. I think a lot of times some players, especially ones who are that good, think they have it all figured out. Michael certainly does not. And you can tell that he's the most humble guy you ever speak to. Nothing can really match the moment actually being here. You can always dream about it, but actually being here, I don't think anything top shit at all. His impact is really, he's done so much for the braves. Not only is he lengthened their lineup with a really talented hitter at the bottom batting 9th, but he's single handedly improved their outfield defense. Harris with a great diving catch. Wow. That's twice. We've seen that in the last week, Michael house shoring up that center field defense. What a read. Sinking line drive. That's the toughest playing baseball right there, beach. Because he is a terrific defender in center field. That's allowed Adam Duvall to shift over to left field and Ronald lacuna to stay in right, which is taking the pressure off of Ronald the Cunha and Adam Duvall's legs for one, and two it's given them one of probably the game right now at the game's best center fielders there. Rifle toward right center field. Harris on the run. Lays out a great catch. I can't wait to see us do the statcast metrics on how far and how fast Michael went to get that bonus. And so it's completely changed the makeup of this team because you have a 5 tool guy who can not only hit, he can defend, he makes incredible plays in center field, takes the pressure off of those around him and super fast so he can affect games on the basis too, but the best way I would describe him is yet he's a 5 tool talent with pretty incredible humility and makeup by all accounts. Well, Justin, you recently wrote a great in depth story breaking down three days that led to the braves to really be sold on Harris as a prospect. At the time when, as you put it, he, quote, never jumped out as one of the country's top high school draft prospects. So let's go back to day number one at the prospect World Series in September of 2018. This is where a couple of key characters enter our story. So can you introduce us to them and tell us what happened that day? Yeah, so the key character there is Chris Lyon Eddie. Because he was the one who brought Michael to the prospect World Series. The three day event that the Yankees and the braves used to hold down in Atlanta. The Yankees would bring prospects, you know, high school draft prospects from the northeast and the braves would collect high school draft prospects from the southeast, and they would play. And so at a time when nobody knew about Michael Harris, the braves got to see him up close. And Chris Lyon Eddie had a feeling about him at this point, but Michael Harris was viewed in the industry as a pitcher. 90 to 93 decent breaking ball in high school as a senior, but when Chris tried to invite Michael to the prospect World Series, Michael wouldn't come. He goes, well, I'm not coming unless I get it bats. He goes, mister lionetti, I know you think I'm a pitcher. I believe in myself. I believe I'm a hitter. My favorite anecdote from there is just that during that event, it was in September, so it was during high school homecoming weekend around Atlanta. And so a lot of these kids were asking to bail out of the event. And they were saying, hey, can we play the first game and not the second game? Yada yada yada, my girlfriend will be pissed if I can't make it to homecoming. But meanwhile, Michael Harris was fighting them for more playing time. He wanted more at bats, he wanted to show himself off, and that's really what spoke to them. There's an adage in the scouting industry that goes these players are trying to tell us who we are. It's on us if we want to listen and Michael Harris that we.

So she is a producer she She was associate producer on show called american beauty star but she's also on handsome devils Deadly lessons was one of her first movies and she'd web of lies perfect obsession. She played molly. I think that movie Groupies working moms american gods. I mean we gotta get her even more out here. She has a couple completed. But we gotta get our queen and production and i love working mom so anyone who's been on that show. I automatically like yeah. I mean this. This girl's great. I'm absolutely going to follow this up with a a follow on twitter but not completed. I'm just gonna follow her. Yeah she's going to be booked and busy though we're gonna we're gonna prayer. I loved to get in early on these girls. I feel like i got in early. On sydney sweeney on here really. I feel like she did a lifetime. Movie and i was like. Who's this girl. She's gonna be famous. And then i look loaded. Imdb and she could just recently become famous. This is where you get you get some good you get some some of the good girls and boys coming out of here that like gone to great things. I'm very happy for everyone. especially you. Barber tiffany fucking killing it. So we cut back to lisa in michael's new house and the neighbor sees a girl. Beverly sees lisa and she makes her way across the lawn. She's wearing this cobalt blue sweater. It's like tank top but it feels like a sweater because it has he's tassels on it and it's a very aggressive shirt but she's coming at you and it just feels like that's like I don't know the texture was working for me in this movie. Normally i would hate on some sort of task shirt. But beverly sold me. So she's like. Hey listen this fella you're trash can this morning. It's a bottle nosy. But it's like michael's medication. He left in the middle of the road. She's like how are you doing this morning after your argument yesterday. At least it's like. I'm fine just was like a fight. We haven't been married for very long. Still finding out new things about him and blend is like all men have secrets. Okay i could tell you. A few stories michael's older than you. He's bound to have more history. And if you love each other you can get through anything speaking from experience. So at this point i started to wonder there was a few points. I felt like beverly was a red herring absolutely. I'm with you. The line about all men have history type of thing. She was just kind of being such an apologist for them. That was confusing especially because of her behavior barbecue where she didn't like that. He was acting weird toward her and that he wasn't even there in the beginning it was the scene was particularly confusing while truthfully like where it really like. Added up for me as like okay. This is sort of like culminating right At the very end when the door was open. Alice yes i was like two. She doing this on purpose. Like she's taking a little to launch call. The police come on girls. speed it up so we. This was the perspective lisa felt. She needed she just needed to be gas. Let into not telling her gut instinct and they hug and she's like my door's always open. Okay so once she's alone her cell rings and she takes a deep breath before answering it. Forty three forty eight to forty four forty six. Hello he left so suddenly. I wanted to let you know. I'm sorry really really sorry. You're sorry. Tiffany michael losses job. We we had to leave because of you. I know you lied to me too. Okay whatever are you serious right now lease the. There's some things have michael that you don't know that you really need to know. Oh god have you not done enough as your best friend. I need to warn you been married before. Yeah i know. I know about wendy. I guess we talk okay. You know i have to go straight. I gotta ask you about this. 'cause like it's it just haunts me in these lifetime movies and i'm always looking for a fresh take on me. I feel like sometimes in. This happens a lot in lifetime movies. It's like there is a such a lack of development that characters interest in one. Another can only be seen sexually driven unless the person as you know to me like. I thought patrick was neutered to me as far as any sort of lake. I'm thinking he's a romantic interest for lisa. But okay like what this character is doing is like. This is absolutely not like one of those. Were really like intense female friendships. Where tiffany's probably secretly in love with lisa. I don't think this is like that. But it's like there's not enough context given where the only thing you can kind of assume as like as an adult anyway as like. She is romantically interested in her with her. I hear what you're saying for me. Though when i was watching this i saw how passionately tiffany reacted to the whole situation. I thought she was just fully grossed out by the male authority taking advantage of his subordinate. I agree the number one thing they did for that was when she said like.

"But you know. I think he's going to start putting some fear in people's hearts and this is already his fifth five five cao's this fight right here so quick and his in his career. This is going to tell us something about him. You know jaded jaden booth. We do we know his his his record in the ring. How many how. Many to all three of his wins by knockout karis. All of his windsor might knock guys tale in without knocking their opponent. And that's the kind of main event that you can expect you know tomorrow night this car. I'd you know. I think. I like the friday card a little bit. Better you got the michaels. on their harris. He last fought on top rank. He's four and no and he's going to be going now to five with this fight. Because i'm picking them. I mean i'm sorry. I know i'm commentating but like the opponent is under is very probably going to be outmatched against this red hot prospect. We've been hearing about the michael since he was owen. No but are you worried that. He's coming off a very quick turnaround. No i mean. I'm sorry listen. This is a sport of what have you done for me lately and judge a book by its cover judge in the opponent. The opponent wins harris. These look in the mirror. Yeah yeah you specifically told me that. This was for the atlantic crowd. He's out to get a knockout and it's specific he better it's there. It's his gift to them. What okay okay. He's he better and listen. Did you see his his way in picture he did. Yeah yeah you bet you bet. I mean look making short jokes. You'd better take out the short man. Yeah him and his trainer. Pete crumbly to michael straighter had their fun. Poking their heads they took a picture with a drink. I didn't even know what it was. I didn't know he sparred forty rounds with chicago stevenson. Can you the michaels michael yadda forty rounds with someone at that. Caliber sport forty rounds in the last seven years. A fighter like the michael harris spar. A guy like four forty rounds and not take something away. I mean is it like a guarantee i mean does it basically equivalency to go into those rounds though mario the recent the recent for this camp or are they spread out through his four fight career. So if you wanna put it in those terms technically no. It wasn't for the exactly two for this. But that's because this lead up was very quick He had been in camps since april third and he was getting time. We should core before that and after so that time is very recent taken away taking away from those type requirements absolutely. Yeah you gotta you gotta be able to come out of that if you're not a session with something and and it's questionable. Obviously because some some fighters are not cerebral. But that's what you do you know if you're in this game the win if you're if you're sparring because you want you want they want to get better wanna get better. I mean we seen today. The chicago was sparring. Jared anderson with no headgear. Yeah mr knockouts. Marin partners allegedly. That's the rumor. That's jared jared jared. How heavyweight You know another fighter. We had talked about the friday card. We talked about the friday card. Being a one that's highlighted with a lot of really great talent. Here's one of quad. "Are also tied. And doing all they can do to go. After abusers you know my experience with prosecutors in there some notable exceptions is that they won't charge these cases unless it's an absolute lock and that's very different from other crimes Most of the time in la they won't prosecute unless you have the equivalent of a confession. That's unfortunate. i think that you know we try these cases a lot now. Our standard of proof is lower but juries will believe victims. They do especially somebody. That's credible if you really want to stop this in. It seems like we read about a teacher or somebody in a position of trust every day. That does this. You've got the charge people. This is the first time you've seen a case in which people convicted of sexual assault were freed by court decision in two thousand and three the. Us supreme court overturned a california law that allowed for the prosecution of accused sex abusers as long as charges against them were brought up within a year authorities being notified by survivors. I mean you mentioned earlier. Father michael harris who admitted to molesting dozens of boys you were representing some of those victims after that decision happened. What did you tell your clients. I told my clients that that they're only they're only way to justice was the civil system and and you know very frequently That's where we end up. The vast majority of cases we try and settle. There are no criminal convictions A good example. It would be george neville rocker. Who was appraised in the archdiocese of la who molested dozens of girls. Over forty years had criminal charges. Pending were dismissed. Father michael kelly in the diocese of stockton in a we try to case against him for ten weeks and there was a finding of liability and he fled on a plane to ireland. No one would charge him I don't understand why prosecutors don't file these cases and going back to the nassar case to give you the flip side is that the local. Da in lansing michigan would not charge. Larry nassar who by the way was gretchen. Whitmer believe it or not before. She was governor at michigan. The attorney general. A woman named angela politis incredible prosecutor prosecuted him when the feds and no one else would and was able to obtain a conviction able to find the child pornography and her job. I'm that's if it weren't for her and Police sergeant the michigan state police name andrea mumford. That would never have happened. He'd still be molesting olympians today. In your position you have clients who reach justice of sorts. With a civil settlement as you said for their abuse and also see their abusers jailed although rarely but most of the times it's only a settlement and sometimes nothing happened so when survivor doesn't get the justice that they seek. What advice do you give them to be able to cope. Well i tell you the greatest healing for survivors to see their perpetrator coughed up and taken into custody after a criminal verdict. There's nothing more healing. It's an outward sign that they are the victim that their perpetrator is the person who did the crime and that they don't have anything to be ashamed of my advice to anybody who suffered a sexual trauma is to find a way to your therapy and in your own life. Some people use spiritual guidance to do it but is to find a way to give meaning to your suffering and make no mistake. I say suffering. I choose that were carefully as it is The people who find a way to give meaning to what happened to them do the best so my advice would be to anybody who suffered a sexual assault as number one. Call the police even if it happened many years ago make a police report. And if they say they can't do it make them do it. You have a right to make a police report. Believe me if they're alive they're still doing it. Second is to.
