So Beyoncé did credit kelis, who was 24 when the song debuted nearly two decades ago as the performer and Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo as the songwriters. What does an artist who wants to use someone else's work in their song have to do? What kind of permissions do they have to get? What kind of royalties do they have to pay? Typically the way that works is and there's really two different kinds of copyrights involved here. There's the copyright in the song and then there's the copyright in the recording of the song. And those are two different things. Sometimes they're owned by the same person. Sometimes they're not. Frequently, they're not. The record label will often own the copyright in the sound recording and the songwriter will own the copyright in the song. My understanding in the case of the energy track is that it was not a sample of the sound recording. It was Beyoncé actually singing the melody. It wasn't a recording of kelis voice singing it. So if that's the case, then it would only be the songwriter that would have to be approached about that. And typically in a situation like that, where a small piece of a song is used called an interpolation is the term that's often used in the industry now. There will be some kind of a fractional percentage paid from the revenues of that song the person who owns the piece that was interpolated will get some small percentage of the royalties. Generated by the song. But it's a negotiated thing. It's not like standard price. It's all how popular was the first record, how big is the second record? What kind of bargaining power does everybody have? It doesn't seem like Beyoncé did anything wrong here. I mean, I can certainly imagine that if song on the police record was credited to Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo and they'd say to Beyoncé, sure, you can use it if I were on Beyoncé's team, I would say, okay, we've got the writers permission here. We're fine, and they would put the credit on the record accordingly. I mean, if there is some kind of backstory that the credits on the police track were not accurate, how is Bianca going to know that? I mean, Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo presumably would know that if that were the case. But Beyoncé wouldn't know that necessarily. So I'm not sure that Beyoncé did anything. Wrong here other than taking somebody's word for something and to the extent that someone on her team had looked up the credits on the police record, they would have seen those two names on it and they would have had no reason to think there was a red flag there about anything. Kelis said she took part in the writing, it was supposed to be 33, 33, 33. Do young artists have to get a lawyer to make sure their rights are protected when they're involved in projects like this? They need to have someone with some industry experience, whether it's a manager or a lawyer, the actual title doesn't much matter, but it has to be somebody with some industry experience who can know sort of what the pitfalls are. And that's often not the case, particularly when artists are first starting out. I'm not familiar with police's career. I don't know how many records she had made previously. Maybe she had a lot of experience in the industry, but it seems in that case that if she did participate in the writing of the song and it was her understanding that it would be one third splits all around, there should have been a piece of paper somewhere and someone representing her should have made sure that there was a piece of paper somewhere that set that out that that's what the splits would be. It's been a very hot summer, and as a result, a lot of river levels are extremely low. Probably the most important of them is a river called the Rhine. That's about 800 miles long. It starts in the Swiss Alps. It goes all the way down through Europe to the North Sea and that is used to ship a lot of really important commodities through the continent. So I'm talking energy, coal, gas oil diesel, gasoline, but also stuff like gravel, cement, iron ore, when the water level on the Ryan gets really low, the barges that are used to transport all this stuff, they can't take on enough that can't take on their full loads of these commodities. Because the more you load, the lower you get in the water and then when the river is really shallow, so they'll hit the bottom. It's the low water really choking off the supply of energy and commodities in Europe, just as there's a war in Ukraine and we've got problems with Russian gas supply. So it's a little bit of a perfect storm at the moment. You know, check this strikes me as a very difficult problem to solve. You know, save doing a rain dance or something. I don't know how you fix this. So I'm wondering is there any hope that this problem could be solved or is it more a matter of shipping stuff via truck and rail instead? But first here's david bell reds manager talking about the decision to call on michael lorenzen and then michael gibbons in the absence of ever bringing in a guy who throws left-handed just wanting to go to look lead right there with the brewers threatening michael's ability to go back out but really mainly just shutting down that any right there and given our offense a chance to to add on Same reason went to michael gibbons later you know just doing everything we can stay in the lead people leading really changes the whole the whole game really when you can keep a lead so they were prepared to do it and i really just trying to stay out front in the most important spot of the game tucker wondered if the longish top of the six may of ice lorenzen a little bit. Where are you concerned about that. As well i went into that any i thought the same thing. What's once the inning for the end of the inning. It was doing everything he could to st louis. So he needs to figure out what haas or hosmer was doing last season when he raises launch angle for a little bit. Put that into effect because until he does that. It's gonna be really hard for him to kind of tap into that power. And i think he's got a better tool than what he showed this year. And you know not quite what he showed in twenty twenty. Unfortunately he's only he's not going to retain first base ability next year.
